Now the fastest way to black color on a burger – for almost all find out is to ask around, and every city cooked beef – is important. Cooking has its favorite. HAMBURGER RECIPE Ingredients Quantity Hamburger meat

1 lb

Granulated garlic

1 tbsp

Worchester sauce

¼ cup

Liquid smoke

2 tbsp

Kosher salt

1 tbsp

Seasoning salt

1 tbsp

Black pepper

1 ½ tbsp

Method of preparation 1) Mix all ingredients – seasonings and sauces – together. 2) Add the mixed ingredients to the hamburger meat and mix well, make sure the mix is well evenly incorporated into the hamburger 3) Take a small bit of hamburger and press it into a small patty (1 ounce or less). Cook and taste. 4) After tasting sample, adjust seasoning if desired (add seasonings to your desired taste). 5) Divide evenly into 3-4 portions, and make them into patties.

Chef notes: 1) 20/80 ground beef makes a juicier burger, with more flavor. 2) Patties can be frozen up to two months if wrapped tight. 3) Keep in mind, the thinner the patties are, the quicker they will cook. 4) The longer the hamburger sits, before cooking, the more the ingredients will penetrate the meat (up to 24 hours). page 18

UNDERWOOD GREENS UP FOR SUMMER Michele Wiernicki

Family and MWR Marketing

Photos by Chris Bohn/FMWR Marketing

From top to bottom: Lake Bunker Mountains, golf well and lake.

It was a rough 2017 for Underwood Golf Course as they pursued the long, lengthy, expensive process of acquiring a new well. The greens turned brown and the course was left, less than, desirable for all of Underwood’s loyal golfers. The inside of the well had basically deteriorated to the point of collapsing. From requisition request to project completion, it took more than 18 months to finish. This $1.1M project was long coming for Underwood Golf Complex. Thankfully the work was all worth it as the new well began pumping its first water onto the dry course early this spring, just in time for the warm weather to arrive. Now the course is green and ready for summertime golf here in beautiful El Paso! Whereas many other golf courses around the United States have their seasons significantly shortened due to weather, Underwood stays quite busy for 10 months or more each year depending on the desert temperatures. If you love to golf or are looking to take up this sport, Underwood Golf Complex is ready to make you a regular. The two beautiful courses will accommodate all varying levels of golf play. Golf with a friend or join one of the many fun tournaments happening this summer. Underwood is ready to take El Paso golfing to the next level.

Interesting factoid about Underwood: There is a small lake on the Sunrise course. The well pumps water into

the lake which in turn provides the water that irrigates the greens. Earlier this year the pumps began getting clogged and it was discovered that Asian clams were growing in the lake and they were getting sucked up into the irrigation pipes. These clams are apparently native to the Western parts of the United States and have migrated here to El Paso. With the help of the Environmental Department and a little ingenuity on the part of the golf maintenance crew, new filters were added to help stop the clam obstruction. page 20

MILO

Hi everyone, it’s me Milo, your favorite four-legged friend! Summer is a great time of year for my friends and me to play outside and spend time with family. When the sun is out and it starts to get hotter outside, there are some considerations to keep all of us happy and healthy, while we have fun in the sun. I love to go on walks, but the pavement can be too hot for my paws, ouch! Grassy areas are soft and cool during the day to play in, but if you have to walk us on pavement, the best times are in the morning or evening to avoid burns. Remember, if it is too hot for your bare feet, then it is too hot for mine. Playing outside can be very exhausting, especially out in the sun! I always look for shade and a cool drink of water to help me cool down, and what better way than to go to the pool! My friends at Family and MWR are having their annual Doggy Swim Day Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Pool! How great is that, my friends and I get the whole pool to ourselves! The cost is $2 per dog, but our humans get in for free. All well-behaved, vaccinated, furry friends are welcome to attend! But remember, only doggies and their parents are allowed in the pool. Children have the whole summer in the pool; this is our day to play and stay cool. I love to see all the different costumes, best tricks and look-a-like contests that happen during the event. If you plan to join this paw-some event, make sure @blissmwr @blissmwr

your dog can swim before letting them into a pool. If they are reluctant to get in the water, it might be that they cannot swim or are a weak swimmer. You could put on a life vest and swim with them in the pool. I like wearing my life vest, it helps me stay afloat! I love jumping in the cool water fetching for my toy. I get a great workout and stay cool at the same time. Another tip for staying cool during the summer is to consider cutting our hair shorter or grooming us more often if we have a thick or long coat. I like to get a fresh haircut and get combed, it feels so good! Make sure to not cut our hair too short though. Our fur acts as a nature sunblock for our delicate skin. Also, NEVER EVER leave us alone in the car! Please don’t leave us in the car for a quick run, with the windows down or with the car on and the AC running. There is no good reason to leave any pet in the car alone. On a mildly warm day, the temperature in a car can rise 20°F in 10 minutes and 30°F in just 20 minutes! I get hot just sitting in the open sun, so let’s be careful not to leave us inside a car, that’s a huge no, no. I hope we can all have a fun and safe summer with our families and friends. I can’t wait to see everyone at the various Family and MWR events that will be held this year!

Paws and Kisses,

BEHIND THE SCENES OF FAMILY & MWR Natalie Hinojos Family and MWR Marketing

Walking into the gym there is a sea of weight lifting machines, people finishing up their fitness classes, wiping off their sweat from their forehead and satisfied with their workout for the day. You start to wonder, “How can I go from unmotivated to energized and ready to hit the gym?” Well, it starts with knowing what you want to accomplish, finding places to go to get the results you want and enjoying yourself. Fort Bliss has a lot to offer for your exercising needs, from working out in groups to massage therapy or working out alone. But there’s also Mission Essential Fitness (MEF). This is a diamond in the rough program suitable for Soldiers, DoD civilians, spouses and high school students. Separate from Group Fit, MEF goes into depth and focuses on the proper way of using the weight machines to how to correctly do a lunge. Almost like a personal trainer – but not really – MEF looks at your nutrition, how you exercise and helps you find different ways to exercise your body type. This is all open and available to you! Let’s go behind the scenes of Mission Essential Fitness and find out how this program has sprouted from the desert roots of Fort Bliss to Army wide! MEF is a military mission side program, they help Soldiers in and out of their physical trainings (PTs). The program is designed to help Soldiers improve their Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) scores and it teaches them the nutrition they need. “We train Soldiers to be tactical athletes,” said Dr. Douglas Briggs, director of Human Performance. “To be able to go forward, backward, side to side, up and down, and to make transitions very readily and without injury.” MEF is a well-known program, it has been around for 11 years beginning here at Fort Bliss, and spread Army wide from Fort Sill to Fort Riley and beyond. Dr. Briggs designed the whole program to better assist Soldiers during PT. You can’t get this program going without a proper team of trainers in place. All seven employees hired, are from universities, who have trained with large groups. They

Hitting the pools this summer Angelina Parris-Wheeler & Charles Armendariz Aquatics Managers

Water safety month is here! The hot weather is upon us here in the El Paso desert and cooling off is on everyone’s mind. There are a few things to remember when it comes to water safety. Preventing drowning accidents and being safe around the pool is essential for everyone involved. Take the time to review these tips before heading to the pool this summer!

Make Water Safety Your Priority!

• Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. • Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. Even at a public pool or a lifeguarded beach, use the buddy system! • Make sure everyone in the family learns how to swim. Enroll in age-appropriate Red Cross water orientation and Learn-to-Swim courses. • Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water. • Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone. • Establish rules for your family and enforce them without fail. For example, set limits based on each person’s ability, do not let anyone play around drains and suction fittings, and do not allow swimmers to hyperventilate before swimming under water or have breath-holding contests. • Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous. • If you go boating, wear a life jacket! Most boating fatalities occur from drowning. • Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination; it affects swimming and diving skills; and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm.

Aquatics Training Center (ATC)

Water

• Install and use barriers around your home pool or hot tub. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection. • Ensure that pool barriers enclosing the entire pool area, are at least 4-feet high with gates that are self-closing, selflatching and open outward, and away from the pool. The latch should be high enough to be out of a small child’s reach. • If you have an above-ground or inflatable pool, remove access ladders and secure the safety cover whenever the pool is not in use. • Remove any structures that provide access to the pool, such as outdoor furniture, climbable trees, decorative walls and playground equipment. • Keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.

Maintain Constant Supervision

• Actively supervise kids whenever around the water—even if lifeguards are present. Do not just drop your kids off at the public pool or leave them at the beach—designate a responsible adult to supervise. • Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions Prevent Unsupervised Access to the when supervising children around water. @blissmwr @blissmwr

Know What to Do in an Emergency

• If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability. • Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number. • If you own a home pool or hot tub, have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit. • Enroll in Red Cross home pool safety, water safety, first aid and CPR/AED courses to learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies. To enroll, visit the American National Red Cross website at http://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-foremergencies/types-of-emergencies/water-safety. Follow these guidelines and take a dip this summer in one of Fort Bliss MWR’s aquatic centers, the Biggs Park splash park and our outdoor pools! Fort Bliss offers two major indoor aquatic centers with recreational swimming programs that are offered all year round. For more information on swimming lessons, pool parties, fitness classes and unit trainings, call 915-568-7431 or 915-741-5901. Fourth Annual Cardboard Regatta

Natalie Hinojos Family and MWR Marketing

“Row, row, row your boat!” Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) is hosting its fourth annual Cardboard Regatta Aug. 25 at the Community Pool! What’s a Cardboard Regatta? Well, it is a boating competition where children and adults sail off in the pool on their innovative cardboard boats! Yes, you and your partner create a cardboard boat from scratch and climb aboard to see if you can make the long voyage home! Here’s what you need to do to participate in this creative event. Visit our website at bliss.armymwr.com, search Cardboard Regatta and register your team! You’ll need your team name and the division you’ll be participating in. The categories are adult and child age 5-9 division, adults ages 18 and older division and children ages 10-17 division. All boats must have two sailors – a captain and a first mate and each must remain in the boat at all times. Once you’re registered, start getting your materials ready to build! The approved construction materials include card-

board, duct tape, spray adhesive and liquid nails. There are a few rules to follow to prevent disqualification and one big one is the use of improper materials, so build wisely! Don’t worry about making oars, Family and MWR will provide life vests and oars. After all the fun of making the boat, it’s time to test the waters! Whoever can set sail from the starting position and make it back again in the shortest time wins the longest voyage. But wait, longest voyage isn’t the only award that will be given. Judges will be watching out for the Most Creative boat and the Biggest Shipwreck during the voyage. So, be inventive and if your ship is going down, make a huge splash! You might be wondering how much the cost is to participate, well it’s FREE! Yes, this is a free event to take part in. FMWR is also teaming up with Fort Bliss Recycling and will have cardboard available starting in early July. So, be on time to set sail at 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Community Pool, located at 253 Club Road. Remember to pre-register because it is required. It can be done online at bliss.armymwr.com, search Cardboard Regatta. Rules and regulations apply and will be provided on the website. For more information, call 915-568-2554.

NEW

OPPORTUNITIES

Rachel Arizaga Family and MWR Fort Bliss Libraries

Looking for something new and exciting to try out this summer? Look no further than the Mickelsen Community Library’s MakerSpace! For those of you who haven’t been by, the MakerSpace is a handson, collaborative learning area that promotes Do it yourself (DIY), arts & crafts and technology. The Makerspace has everything from crayons to digital fabrication tools (and a whole lot more). This summer Fort Bliss Libraries are partnering with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to bring you new and emerging technologies so you can learn 21st century skills!

3D Scanning / 3D Printing

Three-Dimensional (3D) printing is a process in which material is solidified or joined under computer control to create a three-dimensional object. 3D printing is used in rapid prototyping; rapid prototyping is a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using 3D Computer Assisted Design (CAD) data. 3D printing is also used in additive layer manufacturing technology; additive layer manufacturing is a modern fabrication process that can use a wide range of materials to create products.

Objects printed in the 3D printers can be of almost any shape or geometry and typically are produced using a digital model or file (check out Thingiverse, a website dedicated to sharing digital design files, to get an idea of what you can print on a 3D printer!). With 3D printers you can print objects in plastic, wood, wax, glass filled polyamide or even various metals! Although the MakerSpace already had a few 3D printers, 2 Lulzbot Taz 6 3D printers have been added to the space. Additionally, MakerSpace has added 3D scanning capabilities with the Sense 3D

scanner! 3D Scanning technologies allow for the creation of 3-dimensional objects. By using 3D scanning you will be able to capture a digital copy of a physical real world object (like your head!).

Other equipment/materials in the MakerSpace

There are sewing machines, plotter (vinyl cutter), software packages such as Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator, T-shirt and hat press, robotic kits, giant Lego wall, iPads, laptops, professional embroidery machine, hand and power tools, Silhouette Mint Stamp Machine, MaKey MaKey. There are also button makers, pyrography pens, Eggbot Pro, littleBits, Cricut and so much more!

CNC Desktop Router

What is a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) router? It is a computercontrolled cutting machine related to the hand-held router used for cutting various hard materials, like wood, metal, plastic, and foam. CNC routers can’t slice a plywood sheet into cabinet parts, but they can cut small parts — drawer fronts, for example, or door panels — complete with joinery cuts, profiling and decorative carving. They’ll mill a rough board smooth or texture a smooth board to make it rough. Where they really stand out is in making signs and relief carvings. To use a CNC router you need a computer and a CAD program to run it. The CNC router has a version of a CAD software program, so you can draw what you want to cut. Then you switch to a toolpath program, also provided with the machine. There you select the cutter (or cutters) you intend to use. The software calculates the cutting instructions and the calculation yields a file that you can name and save. Next, you secure the material you are using in the machine, install the correct bit, and begin the routing process. CNC routers cut in what are called three axes or directions. Up and down is the Z coordinate or axis. Think of left and right as the Y-axis. Forward and back could be called the X-axis. With a variety of bits and a computer program working in those three directions, the sky’s the limit. However, the overall size of the machine’s bed and cutting range will determine the maximum workpiece size you can manipulate.

Design & Manufacture Competition

Now that you have an idea of what the MakerSpace is and what it has to offer, you should stop by this summer and participate in the 3D Design & Manufacture Competition! That’s right Fort Bliss Libraries are co-hosting a 3D printing competition with the ERDC team from now until Aug. 20. Register a team and get all the in-depth rules and entry forms from the Mickelsen Community Library, located at 2E Sheridan Road. Participants can register at any time, but must have the project completed by Aug. 20. The competition details are as follows: all 3D printed items must fit in a 10”W x 10”D x 9”H area, assembled using only parts manufactured and printed from the available 3D printers. It must perform or function as intended when being demonstrated to the judges. Teams of any number can participate, ages 8 and older are welcome. Team must choose a team name during registration. Judges will grade projects for presentation (10%), visual appearance (20%), utilization/functionality (35%), and innovative/creative (35%). First place winners will receive a $500 gift card, second place winners will receive a $250 gift card and third place winners will receive a $100 gift card. All participants will get a certificate of participation and a t-shirt. The competition wrap-up ceremony will be Aug. 25 from 11 @blissmwr @blissmwr

a.m. to 1 p.m. in the MakerSpace; printed objects will be on display and the winners will be announced. Refreshments will be provided; t-shirts and certificates will also be given out at this time. The Makerspace is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The times will change after Aug. 25. As a reminder, the MakerSpace is all about hands-on learning and fun, but there are also safety rules to follow when operating machinery and equipment that can cut, pinch, heat, tear, clamp, solder, burn, etc. For these reasons, everyone in the space must be 8 years of age or older and wear covered-toe shoes. On that note, happy making! For more information, call 915-568-1902.

different sports offered, registration deadlines, cost per child and the season’s duration. Parents are able to register their children at any CYS facility located on Fort Bliss. All of the sports are recreational meaning they endorse teaching youth the fundamentals of the game(s) as well as ensuring the kids have fun while playing. This will hopefully encourage students to continue to be active and involved with sports as they continue to grow. After each season, the Youth Sports Plex hosts pizza and trophy ceremonies directly following the students’ last game, to celebrate the completion of the sport, and creating new friendships. Volunteers are always welcome to help and coach the teams. To become a coach, a background check needs to filled out and completed with Youth Sports. Volunteers will have to come to the Youth Sports Plex, located at Bldg. 195 Chaffee

Road to fill out and turn in the background check form. The Youth Sports Plex also offers fitness classes for children ages 10-18. The hourly classes include weight training, speed and agility, cardio boxing, balance and more. Summer classes are offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is also open to students who would like to come in and do cardio on their own. They will have access to a stair stepper, bike, elliptical and treadmill. During the summer there are multiple sports and fitness camps for all ages! The summer camp trifold which includes all of the camps offered this summer can be found at any CYS facility or online at www.bliss.armymwr.com, search Youth Sports Plex. Jump Start into Kindergarten Aneta Veedmont

Family and MWR Marketing

Kindergarten is not only an exciting experience, and a time of learning and exploration, but it is also a key milestone in a young child’s life. At the same time, parents may worry if their child is well prepared and ready to start their journey in the land of Kindergarten. To ensure kindergarten readiness, and school success in the long run, parents can take advantage of the Army’s Strong Beginnings Pre-Kindergarten Program. Available at every Army Garrison, with a standard set of guidance and procedures, this program was created to ensure that regardless of the Army Family’s location, each Army child is prepared to enter kindergarten. Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services (CYS) offers the program in Child Development Centers (CDC) at the following locations: Milam CDC, East Bliss CDC, Logan CDC, Main CDC and Replica CDC. Children, who are 4 years old by page 40

JUL | AUG | SEP

Sept. 1, and will be entering Kindergarten in the following Fall school year 2019-2020, are eligible for the program. The program follows the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) school calendar, and offers a curriculum that focuses on the social, emotional, and physical development of children. Children will benefit from the program, with basic academic and “Kindergarten Classroom Etiquette” skills to improve school readiness. The Strong Beginnings Pre-K program academic structure runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday with “wrap-around” care provided from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 to 6 p.m. There is no added cost for the Strong Beginnings program versus a full-day preschool program; it’s based on the financial category in which the family is placed at the time of registration with CYS. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, the most widely used curriculum for pre-kindergarten programs across

the country, is the only authorized curriculum for Strong Beginnings program. The curriculum is an addition to teaching strategies literacy, social studies, and math publications. It is a scientifically-based, research-tested model, which provides teachers with strategies for meeting children’s individual needs and learning styles. The curriculum and assessment systems are inclusive of all children – those developing typically, children with disabilities and Englishlanguage learners. At the end of each “school year” the Strong Beginnings program conducts a fun, yet meaningful graduation ceremony for the children and their parents. The children, wearing caps and gowns, are recognized for their successes, and wished farewell and best of luck, as they receive a Strong Beginnings diploma to document the conclusion of Pre-K. For more information about the program, visit Parent Central at 1743 Victory Ave, or call 915-568-4374. www.bliss.armymwr.com

Month of the Military Child essay contest winners

Garden Club recognized

Simone Wendlandt-Hendricks

Lucy Daniels, a Child and Youth Services (CYS) program assistant at Bliss School Age Center (SAC), has guided a group of 19 children, who are part of SAC garden club to earn their Junior Master Gardener Certification. According to Army Higher Headquarters, these children are the second group to be recognized and certified in the entire Army. The Junior Master Gardener program is a program that teaches children how to become good gardeners and citizens by making positive contributions to their community, school and family. In order for the children to be certified, the children had to complete 8 gardening projects in the mornings and afternoons. Some of these projects consisted of art projects that allowed children to understand the benefits of plants to people, while other projects included learning about soil particles and soil types. The children have learned how to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and indoor plants, as well as learning to harvest and maintain plants. The children have also learned how to cook using the food they’ve harvested such as purple potato fries. The garden club ended in the beginning of June and will start back up in September. However, the children were celebrated for all their hard work before summer break commenced.

FMWR School Liaison

“Brave Hearts, Resilient Souls” was this year’s essay contest theme hosted by the School Liaison Office. We invited students to help us celebrate achievements and recognize the sacrifices of our Military Students. Many campuses used this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the military connected students in their care. Students had a chance to voice their stories while helping others understand their experience. The winning essays were chosen with the following guidelines in mind, “What does it mean to you to be a military child?” We’d like to thank everyone who participated in this contest. Our team really enjoyed all of the submissions, which were all wonderful and inspiring but that made it challenging to narrow it down to select the winners. Top entries from each age category (elementary, middle, and high school) won a cool prize and are recognized in this edition of Bliss NOW. We are very excited to share the winners with you in their respective age category. The winning essays are available to read online at bliss.armymwr.com/programs/school-support-services.

Work from home with ARMY FCC

Aneta Veedmont

Family and MWR Marketing

Army Family Child Care (FCC) is a wonderful program that allows military spouses to provide child care in their onpost home. FCC homes often serve as a second home to many children. Providers get to know children personally, resulting in a more comfortable “home away from home” experience. “Our program provides full-day, partday, hourly, before and after school, evening, weekend, special needs, and long-term child care in a certified provider’s home. FCC providers offer multiage programs for children ages 4 weeks through 12 years old. This diversity can be a great learning environment for kids of all ages,” said Meloney Cairns, Child and Youth Services (CYS) FCC Director. “This CYS program has advantages which include low child to adult ratios, flexible hours, and family settings to both single and dual military families.” Parents can expect to receive the same quality of care in an Army FCC home as in any Child Development Center (CDC) or School Age Center (SAC). FCC providers receive the same training and support as all CYS facility-based staff. “All our FCC providers have passed extensive background checks, cleared inspections from all safety agencies on post and have successfully passed training courses offered by the Army,” said Meloney Cairns. “They are also First Aid, CPR certified and have completed Food Handler’s training. Our homes are regularly inspected by FCC representatives, CYS supervisors, fire, safety, health and environmental officials.” Choosing an FCC home for child care can often be more flexible in meeting the parent and family needs. FCC homes offer a family atmosphere with a smaller adult/ child ratio which means providers are able to respond effectively to each child’s individual needs. Patrons can interview prospective providers and select the environment they feel will be the most nurpage 42

turing one for their child. To obtain a current provider roster, call the FCC office at 915-568-4198. Becoming a Family Child Care Provider at Fort Bliss may be a great opportunity for military spouses looking for a career. FCC providers create an atmosphere which supports the curriculum through the use of space, materials and opportunities for children to experiment and practice skills both indoors and outdoors. Opening a FCC home offers parents that are also providers the option of staying home with their very young children while caring for other children and earning additional income. Be your own boss! Operating a FCC home is a very portable career, easily transferring to the next installation. Providers set the operating hours for their home based upon a 12 hour day, receive free training and professional resources, and become part of the growing profession of child care. FCC providers do more than set up an environment for children to learn, they create an environment for families to thrive. Prospective providers can call the FCC office at 915-568-4198 or visit the FCC office at 3503A Story Street to pick up an application packet to start their professional journey. You’re getting ready for a military formal, your makeup is on point, and you put on your dress feeling beautiful. As you walk into the venue you notice some of the guests are dressed in elegant gowns or charming suits, you start to feel a little uneasy. As you walk further, you see it … the receiving line. The line of introductions, a sea of people whom you have to meet, and you have no idea how to proceed. You think to yourself, “how hard could this be?” Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way for many aspects of a military formal. Don’t worry though. You are definitely not the first person to be unsure about your first formal. Army Family Team Building (AFTB) is ready to help sooth your fears!

On July 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Army Community Services (ACS), located at 2494 Ricker Road, AFTB will host “A Night of Etiquette and Enchantment.” This event will include everything you can expect from the beginning to the end of a military function. Learn how to properly send an RSVP, the proper dress code, how to introduce or be introduced in the receiving line, and all of the traditions, customs and courtesies that apply at a military function. The event will include a sit-down dinner to help navigate the correct fork to use for a salad all the way through maintaining a well-mannered dinner conversation. There will also be a fashion show given by Operation Deploy your Dress while dinner is served. Spend a few hours a month making the Fort Bliss Community a better place to live and work. Fort Bliss is a special place to serve others and support our Community events and programs. Volunteering does not have to be a grandiose gesture or a large commitment. Many local opportunities are available to help out any amount of time based on your availability. Special events or special project volunteers are needed to support community events and can take up only a few hours a month. Army Volunteers work throughout our installation. They become more active members of the community and as a result they are able to enhance their own skills, reinforce positive work habits and achieve personal fulfilment. They also act as the eyes and ears of our community supporting vital programs and services that augment the work of our military and civilian staff. Volunteering in our community opens up doors to future employment. It can help improve your own technical and interpersonal skills. For those looking for a job, volunteering can be the driving force needed to build a resume and network with people. It may also lead to new job opportunities. Volunteering builds the confidence needed to enable the volunteer to go out into the job market and apply for full time positions either on or off Fort Bliss. Volunteering offers a sense of belonging, an opportunity to meet others or the ability to simply give back to a worthy cause. It can also provide valuable community service for youth applying for college making them a better-rounded applicant. Volunteering is a perfect way to get connected and give back to our Community. 6 RENOVATION TIPS ON HOME

Pamela Thomas

Family and MWR ACS

At some point during home ownership, you may find a need or desire to complete a home renovation project. It could be a project as simple as having a fence installed or elaborate as remodeling your kitchen. As the consumer, it is important to understand the entire process of the renovation project and to know resources to utilize if the project is not being completed correctly.

Step 1: Find the right contractor

https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov for information regarding the contractor. Another way to determine the contractor’s reputation is by asking others of their experience. Sometimes, word of mouth is the best avenue to determine the contractor’s reputation.

Step 3: Compare estimates

Before you decide on a contractor, it is important to obtain estimates for your home project. It is recommended to obtain a minimum of three quotes and make sure you are verifying that each quote states what you are requesting to be completed. Be leery of the lowest quote especially if it is significantly lower than the other two and you may want to disregard it. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, such as: a list of references, do they plan to use subcontractors, will a permit be required, etc. You can also visit https://www.nahb.org to find a list of contractors.

Do you need a general contractor, specialty contractor, architect, designer, or a design/build contractor? Your type of project will determine what type of contractor you will need. For example, if you are replacing kitchen cabinets, you would consider hiring a specialty contractor. If your project requires an addition, you would consider hiring an architect to supply the plans. You would consider using a general contractor if Step 4: Review contract there are multiple aspects to the home Once you have obtained a contract, it renovation project as they are respon- is your responsibility to review it and sible from start to finish. make sure the contract is specific and meets your requests. of the project. Leave approximately 10% as your final payment to verify all work is completed to your satisfaction and any concerns have been resolved.

Step 6: Maintain records

Once you have hired the contractor, your responsibilities will continue. Maintain records by keeping copies of the contract, correspondence, any change orders, journal all phone calls, conversations and activities. It is recommended you take pictures of the renovation progress, in case it is needed later. Upon completion of the work, and before making the final payment, consider using a Sign-Off Checklist which would include: contract has been fulfilled; any written warranties for materials and workmanship; proof that all subcontractors and suppliers have been paid; jobsite is cleared of all materials, tools and equipment; and you have inspected and approved the completed work. Now that you understand the process, how can you avoid being scammed? Listed here are a few indicators of a company you should not engage: going door-to-door soliciting for business and offering a discount if you provide referrals; they stipulate having leftover materials; pressure you into making an immediate decision; payment is in cash only and they want a full payment; and ask you to obtain building permits. Avoid these individuals by becoming a wiser consumer to protect yourself and your assets. Lastly, if you have a problem with your contractor and the renovation project, try to resolve with the contractor first. If you are unable to resolve the issue, call Army Community Service (ACS), Financial Readiness Program at 915568-8376 to file a formal complaint. An ACS Financial Specialist will advocate and mediate for a win-win resolution to your issue. www.bliss.armymwr.com

Biggs Water Park fees are $1 for all participants. Glass, knives, alcohol and pets are strictly prohibited at any of these facilities.

long after finishing the program. In the beginning, participants go through an initial assessment then start a full day of four – 30 minute – exercise sessions with snacks and lunch. Participants will attend lecture sessions on nutrition and how to design strength and conditioning programs. The program is held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12 to 1 p.m. at different facilities on post, mostly at the West and East Ironworks gyms, for six-months. The next class session will start in September. It doesn’t stop there for MEF, they train students who want to improve their athletic goals for sports. Dr. Briggs and his staff train high school students, ages 1318, with the Army Strong Strength and Conditioning program. It costs $150 for six weeks Monday through Friday for 3 hours a day. The staff helps students to meet their goals and become better sport athletes. Spouses, there is something for you as well. It can get pretty busy trying to find time to get in a work out. You can

stop in, during regular operating hours, at both West or East Ironworks gym and work out with MEF, all on your own time! They will take the time to work with you and give strength and conditioning circuits to train in. Let’s not forget the fun event they do every year in November, the Strongman and Strongwoman Competition! This annual event has been going on for four years at Soto Physical Fitness Center (PFC). Men and women compete in log press, tire flip, farmer’s walk and truck pull to see who is the strongest. “I love my job,” said Dr. Briggs. “I’ve been doing it for almost 15 years here. I’ve never worked with such a great group of people over all, it’s our MWR. It is what makes it worth coming to work every day.” To schedule a unit PT session at Ironworks gym or find out more about the program, call 915-744-5200. In the Bliss NOW Fall issue we will be going “Behind the Scenes” with Underwood Golf Complex. JUL | AUG | SEP
