Family & MWR Director’s Comments Autumn has arrived, and the desert Southwest is finally cooling down. Don't let the mild temperatures fool you – the fun is just heating up! Halloween is right around the corner, and we have celebrations lined up for kids of all ages. Don't miss Monster Bash, with its two haunted houses and zombie obstacle course. If that's not your style, how about joining the Centennial for ghost stories on the patio? Local author and historian Ken Hudnall has tales that will make your hair stand on end. The Old Fort Bliss Replica will host its annual Haunted Pumpkin Patch, with pumpkin giveaways and a lantern tour, and Desert Strike Lanes will again host a kids' Halloween party on the lanes. Moving into November, we have the first-ever Fort Bliss Air Band Championship, and it should be a blast for the "bands" and spectators alike. Learn about volunteer opportunities available during the holiday season at the Season of Giving Community Service Fair, and give back to the community. Try your luck at High Stakes Bingo; you might win some extra cash just in time for holiday shopping. And, of course, you can't have November without Thanksgiving. At Family and MWR, the Centennial's annual Thanksgiving brunch is a tradition – and it's one we hope you'll share. December brings the yearly holiday festival, and this year it's the Wacky Winter pARTy. Enjoy lots of free fun, then take part in the craft activities and games provided by family readiness groups, with the proceeds going back to their unit funds. Supporting Soldiers and family members is what it's all about. If you're interested in venturing further out, this is the perfect time of year to head into the great outdoors. Our Southwest Adventure outdoor recreation program has trips to the Grand Canyon and Canyonlands National Park lined up, as well as activities closer to home – including climbing and bouldering excursions. Speaking of climbing, you can brush up on your climbing skills at the SSG Roberto Loeza Soldier Activity Center. While you're there, check out the library, Cliffhanger Cafe, BOSS headquarters, outdoor rec program and more. See you out there! Melinda Sorrell

Zombies have invaded Fort Bliss! Celebrate Halloween with ghoulish family fun at Monster Bash, the area’s biggest and best Halloween party. This year, Monster Bash is set for 5-9 p.m. Friday, October 26 at Biggs Park. We’ve got haunted houses in two scare levels – barley scary and pretty scary – and a very scary zombie obstacle course. Can you make it through without becoming zombie chow? Admission to the barely scary house costs $1, and the pretty scary house charges $2 each. Admission to the zombie obstacle course costs $3 per person. Speaking of zombies, come ready for a zombie walk! Where are those ghouls going? We don’t know, but they’re going to shuffle their way around the park ... why don’t you join them? Don’t forget to wear your Halloween costumes – might we recommend you dress as a zombie? While you’re dodging the zombies and getting your scare on, enjoy games and crafts presented by Fort Bliss family readiness groups to raise money for their unit funds. There will be a DJ, dancing and entertainment. Food and beverage vendors will be on hand to tame your beastly hunger. Monster Bash is so much fun, its scary! We’ll see you there ... if you dare. Call (915) 588-8247 to learn more.

“Opening the doors and greeting my parents, and letting them know that their child is well taken care of and in a safe and healthy environment” is the best part of her job, says Patricia Powe. Powe is currently the training technician at Milam Child Development Center, located on Haan Road on East Fort Bliss. Her resume runs very long; she has been a child care provider since the mid 1960s. Powe has done everything from working as a caregiver and lead education technician, to teaching child development at El Paso Community College. She recalls the days when officers’ wives would provide child care for Soldiers, until the United States Department of Army assumed the responsibility in 1980. Powe, born in Augusta, Ga., has been part of the military life for several decades. She was married to the late First Sgt. Henry Powe and has two adult children. Her son Reggie Powe is assigned to 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command. As a mentor, Powe trains caregivers, conducts observations on staff and children, and may be called to step into the shoes of the director or assistant director in their absence. “Pat Powe is a dedicated CYSS employee who is an inspiration to me. She is a former military spouse who enjoys and has a desire to serve other families. She works with staff to inspire them to learn more, do more and become more,” said Pat Smith, chief of Child, Youth and School Services at Fort Bliss. Powe has moved around within CYSS and continues to give 100 percent. “Her dedication to the Soldiers and their families is undeniable and an inspiration to those who work with her,” says Michelle Evans, Milam CDC director. “I love people, I love children; they need me and I need them,” says Powe. It is said by many that Pat Powe lives in the present and chooses every day to be happy and to share her enthusiasm with those around her. If you or your child has ever interacted with Pat, you would agree. Enjoy the spotlight, Mrs. Patricia Powe.

El Paso Pro-Musica to salute Fort Bliss with concert Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing
El Paso Pro-Musica has joined forces with Family and MWR and the Warrior Transition Battalion to salute Fort Bliss with a night of spectacular music. January 18, “An Evening of Bliss: Classical Bombshells” will bring to the stage two of today’s most dynamic young classical artists, violinist Chee-Yun and pianist Natasha Paremski. The concert will take place at the 1st Armored Division Chapel on East Fort Bliss. The concert, part of the 2013 El Paso Pro-Musica Chamber Music Festival, is a result of EPPM Artistic Director Zuill Bailey’s mission to make music accessible to all. The very special show will honor service members and their families. Hailing from South Korea, Chee-Yun’s first public performance took place at the age of 8, in her native Seoul after winning the grand award at the Korean Times Competition. At age 13, she came to the United States and was invited to perform in a Young People’s Concert with the New Your Philharmonic. In the years since, Chee-Yun has performed regularly with the world’s foremost Orchestras, including the Phildelphia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra. Just 24 years old, Paremski has performed with major U.S. orchestras including the Alabama Symphony, Colorado Symphony and Nashville Symphony. In 2010, she was awarded the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year. Her striking and dynamic performances continue to generate excitement from all corners. Support for the concert is provided by the Association of the United States Army. The event will be free to service members and their families; however, tickets will be required. Ticket information will be released at blissmwr.com as it becomes available.

Shining brightly in the Sponsor Spotlight is a familiar name within the armed forces: USAA. USAA has been a large supporter of Fort Bliss and our Soldiers for many years, and has only increased their presence on post in 2012. With their support, Family and MWR has been able to enhance programs within Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers and Army Community Service, among others. Always set up beneath their customized USAA tent with neatly organized tables, USAA attends every event Family and MWR has to offer, and always provides our patrons with a chance to win AAFES gift cards ranging in value from $25-$100. As a sponsor, USAA has supported events including Pop Goes the Fort, Rock the Fort, Fort Bliss’ Got Talent, the MWR Sports run series and more. At Family and MWR, we believe in working alongside businesses that have our Soldiers’ best interests at heart. USAA has most definitely shown their support and looks forward to their continued contributions to Fort Bliss MWR. “The best thing about being a sponsor with the Fort Bliss Family and MWR program is knowing that together we can make a difference in the lives of those who have served, and continue to serve, by providing programs that benefit the entire Team Bliss family, says Lee Handy of USAA. I invite you to all the amazing events Family and MWR has planned for the fall. While you’re there, stop by the USAA table – Lee Handy would love to see you.

Silent auction to benefit Old Fort Bliss Replica Rosalinda Herrera, Family and MWR Marketing
This season, the Old Fort Bliss Replica will host a variety of events to get Fort Bliss in the holiday spirit. The events kick off with the Haunted Pumpkin Patch October 20. From 4-6 p.m., enjoy pumpkin giveaways, holiday crafts and goodies available for purchase. The fun continues with a lantern tour and haunted ghost stories from 6-9 p.m. While warming our bones around the bonfire, storytellers will spook us with tales of haunted places on Fort Bliss and in the El Paso community. Oh wait ... there's more: Cider, mulled wine, hot cocoa and other ghostly delights will be available for purchase. November 17, Old Fort Bliss will host the third annual Star-Spangled Holiday Open House. The open house will welcome visitors from noon-4 p.m. for activities that include an array of holiday goodies, caroling, Christmas crafts, photo stops and other vintage holiday activities. New this year to the Star-Spangled Holiday open house is a silent auction. Bob Snead, the creative genius behind the Buffalo Soldier monument at the Robert E. Lee gate, has generously donated for the auction a print of his work “The Errand of Corporal Ross.” Measuring 18 inches by 42 inches, the print is just the thing for art lovers or anyone interested in the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, Fort Bliss or the Old West. Snead himself is a decorated veteran of 30 years and a retired Army aviator. He has a 16-piece art exhibit of military history of “Blacks in Blue” and “A Hundred Years Ago: The Buffalo Soldier Revisited.” He is an expert on the history of the 9th and 10th U.S. Calvary Regiments and was inducted into the International Hall of Fame for Visual Arts. “Mr. Snead wants to support the Old Fort Bliss Replica,” said Wanda Kienzle, the replica’s education director. “He is happy to contribute his art in the hopes of promoting the history of the Old Fort and the historical displays it has to offer.” In conjunction with the Buffalo Soldier print, there will be other items up for auction, including holiday gift baskets, holiday tablescapes, jewelry and much, much more. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the cultural and educational programs offered through the Old Fort Bliss Replica. Don’t miss a chance to support a great cause while you enjoy the celebration of season.

In the desert Southwest, autumn is the perfect time to head outdoors: The temperatures are mild, the weather is beautiful and the air is clear. When all these factors fall into place, it provides the perfect opportunity to catch some epic views at two of the region’s most scenic parks. From the Grand Canyon in Arizona to Canyonlands National Park in Utah, Southwest Adventure has lined up once-in-a-lifetime adventures this fall. “The trip to the Grand Canyon last year was great,” said John Limon, a recreation specialist with Southwest Adventure. “It was one of those trips where the people who signed up for it had been looking forward to it their whole life. It was a really big deal.” While you can venture off to the Grand Canyon on your own, traveling with Southwest Adventure takes the work and worry out of your preparations, Limon said – there’s no dealing with mail-in permit applications, mapping hiking routes or choosing a campsite. “Applying for a backcountry permit at the Grand Canyon is the biggest headache I have ever had when dealing with a national park,” Limon explained. “It is tough. It’s hard. So we deal with all the permits and the fees. We find the best places to go, the best places to hike and

There’s no need to buy a sleeping bag you won’t use again until next year, because they’ve got you covered. “My wife and I went to the Grand Canyon and, for the two of us, it was a couple hundred dollars,” Limon said. “And that was just for a night and a half. Just Google it, though, then tell me you don’t want to go.”

Southwest Adventure journeyed to the Canyonlands last year. This year, Limon said, the trip will be even bigger and better. The group will spend two nights in the backcountry and one in the frontcountry. “We’re going to see more,” he said. “We’re going to do more.” In addition to the big backpacking and camping trips, there are several climbing trips on Southwest Adventure’s fall schedule. “I’m really excited about climbing season being back,” Limon said, adding that the summer heat makes climbing very difficult in this area. Half-day trips will head to Hueco Tanks State Park for bouldering and Sneed’s Cory in Franklin Mountains State Park for rock climbing. All-day trips will venture out to the Rough and Ready Hills Range for sport climbing. Climbing instruction at the Soldier Activity Center, night laser tag and a movie night just add more fun to the calendar. Sports wraps up year with runs from 2 miles to marathon Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing
If you’re looking to hit the road this fall – as in, pounding the pavement, not heading out on vacation – Team Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics has a schedule that will make you a very happy runner, indeed. From the 2-Mile Training PT Run in October to the Fort Bliss Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k in November, there’s something for every runner at every distance. The 2-Mile Training PT Run is set for 6:30 a.m. October 5 at Soto Gym. Participation in the event grew by leaps and bounds in 2011, a feat that Sports Director Aaron Jones hopes is repeated in 2012. “In 2010 we had 18 runners show up; in 2011, we had 460 runners,” Jones said. The race is applicable for Soldier’s 2-mile PT run, he said, which is a big draw. In November, the sports program will host the first-ever marathon on Fort Bliss. The Fort Bliss Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k Run will step off from Soto Gym at 7:30 a.m. “The marathon is going to be an awesome race,” Jones said. “It’s the first marathon run on Fort Bliss, and it’s going to be a challenging course.” Runners can choose from the 26.2-mile marathon, a 13.1-mile half marathon or a 5k route. Jones and his team decided to include the halfmarathon and 5k to give runners more options. Adding the shorter routes was easy once the marathon route was planned, he noted. The 5k Turkey Trot follows two weeks later, giving runners just long enough to recover from the marathon before lacing up their running shoes again. The run starts at 8 a.m. November 17. This year, runners are competing for bragging rights ... and turkeys. “We’re going to give a turkey to the first-place finisher in each age group,” Jones explained. “Win your age group, get a turkey – it doesn’t get any better than that.” Team Bliss Sports will close out the 2012 schedule with the 8k Holiday Run at 8 a.m. December 8 at Soto Gym. Jones hopes to make the event a family tradition on Fort Bliss. “We’re really trying to gear this one toward the family,” he said. “We want you to come out with the strollers, the dogs – whatever the case may be. Have fun with it. Put your kid on a bike and let him or her ride next to you. “It’s a good length for running with the family, because it’s not so long that you’re kids can’t run it with you, and it’s not so short that it’s over before you’ve even started,” Jones added. In addition to the runs offered this quarter, the sports program will

Whether you're in the mood for yoga or strength and conditioning – and whether it's for early-morning PT or an after-work exercise session – the group fitness program at Family and MWR's Human Performance Department has you covered. "We pride ourselves on offering a variety of classes for patrons of every fitness level," said Tina Lozoya, group fitness director. "We're happy that we're able to offer classes throughout the day, so you have an opportunity to work out regardless of when you have free time." Beginner yoga and indoor cycling classes serve as a great introduction to the more advanced classes. Zumba, gravity, step, pilates, TRX, kettlebell and more are all available. Class schedules change each month to keep it fresh and prevent you from getting bored with your workout. "We try to keep the core classes on the schedule yearround," Lozoya said. "But we like to add new classes on a rotating basis, just to spice it up a little," Lozoya explained. Group fitness classes are available at Soto, Stout and Logan Heights physical fitness centers, as well as the Tennis Club and Fitness Zone. All classes are free and open to valid Family and MWR patrons, including Soldiers, family members, retirees and DoD/DA civilians. SKIESUnlimited lines up open house, winter recitals Darline Goyea, Family and MWR Marketing
Consult with a child about what the best part of fall is, and they will give all sorts of answers. The most consistent response you will hear is the flow of holidays that run from October through December. Here at Fort Bliss Child, Youth and School Services, they listen and try to accommodate parents and children alike. SKIESUnlimited is no exception to the standard. SKIESUnlimited never ceases to provide youth and their families quality programming that stands out and shines. During this holiday season, SKIES would like to set focus on their winter dance recital, scheduled for 6 p.m. December 8. This year’s theme is “Winter around the World.” The recital will showcase students in classes ranging from ballet to tap, as well as a jazz/hip hop routine, hula and folklorico. This is an opportunity for parents to witness the cultures of various dance styles, and to see how well their children build and learn self-discipline, all while having fun – at such a low cost. Performances for the winter recitals are free to the public and will be held at Soldier Hall, located in Bldg. 2 Sheridan Road. SKIESUnlimited presents a winter piano recital, as well. This program unveils the talent of children over the age of 5, and what they have been able to accomplish in the months of consistent lessons. SKIES’ annual open house will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. October 6. All SKIES classes and instructors will be represented. Taking issue, taking action
Make a difference in the Army’s quality of life with AFAP Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing
Did you know you can make a difference in the quality of life experienced Army-wide? It’s true. With the help of the Army Family Action Plan, Soldiers, family members, retirees and DoD civilians have been addressing issues that affect the Army community for 27 years. Each year, AFAP programs at installations across the country hold annual conferences to examine issues that impact quality of life in their area. At Fort Bliss, the 2012 Army Family Action Plan Conference is set for November 5-9 at the Family Resilience Center, Bldg. 250 Club Road. To make the conference a success, AFAP needs two things – issues to address, and volunteers to staff the conference – said Helen Barrientes, AFAP program manger. Across the nation, the program begins with the issues submitted year-round by members of the community. “AFAP is a year-round program, which means that we go out and solicit for ideas and suggestions,” Barrientes said. “Issues come to us throughout the year, and we work on them throughout the year.” Issues that can be addressed locally, Barrientes said, don’t have to wait until the conference for action. That means that the community doesn’t necessarily have to wait a whole year to see the results of their suggestions. “Here locally, we can work the issues year-round. We can start working on them now, before they ever go to the conference,” she explained. “The only issues that we have to go to the conference with are the issues that have to be elevated to the next level – the FORSCOM level – because the process dictates that we must prioritize them.” On case in point, Barrientes said, was the hours of operation for one of the services here on Fort Bliss. “We went ahead and forwarded that on to our command team, and the problem was corrected,” she said. “It didn’t have to go to the conference to be addressed. We fixed it here.” Issues can be submitted online at blissmwr.com/afap, or at various AFAP suggestions boxes throughout the community. The deadline to submit issues for consideration at this year’s conference is November 1. This gives the AFAP staff time to get those issues into the workbooks that will be used at the conference. Without issues, there are no topics to address during the conference ... but without volunteers, there is no conference. “It takes about 75 volunteers to run the conference,” Barrientes said. “And we can’t have the conference without them.” If you’re interested in volunteering, it’s not too late: You can still register as a volunteer at blissmwr.com/afap before the deadline of October 22. AFAP is seeking delegates, facilitators, room managers, transcribers and issue support staff. Delegates identify the issues and recommend the solutions; they’re the”voice for change,” Barrientes noted. There are several delegates in each workgroup, and each workgroup addresses a separate quality-of-life area. Facilitators remain neutral while encouraging members of the group to find their own solutions to the issues being addressed, while room managers assist the group with all logistical needs and assist with administrative support, delivering supplies and with giving directions as needed.
36 • Fall 2012 • ¡blissNOW!
Delegates work through the issues addressed by their workgroup during the 2011 Fort Bliss AFAP Conference. The 2012 conference is scheduled for November 5-9. Transcribers capture the basic ideas of the group and write them in full view of the participants. They record the ideas of the speaker in a way that can be easily understood while remaining neutral to the issue. This person is also responsible for completing the final issue papers and brief out slides. Issue support personnel are the authority on AFAP issues. They provide the group with issue history and ensure they follow issue development standards. Issue support also ensures the issue being worked is not currently at the Department of the Army level. Because volunteering for the AFAP conference requires a fiveday commitment, AFAP does provide free child care for volunteers’ children who are registered with Child, Youth and School Services. Volunteers at the conference are not subject to the 16-hour-per-week limit normally imposed by Army Community Service. The big commitment made by the volunteers can lead to some big changes. “The postal service on East Fort Bliss was one of the issues that came out of the conference last year,” Barrientes said. “The other issue that is DA-wide is an issue that went forward two years ago: the extension of the Priority Placement Program for people within the government service who have a spouse who was killed in action or permanently disabled.” Previously, such an individual would remain on the Priority Placement Program for 24 months. When your life has been turned upside down by the death or injury of a spouse, however, “Two years is a very short time to get it all together and be ready to rejoin the workforce,” Barrientes said. At Fort Bliss, the delegates made a recommendation that the PPP be extended to those spouses for five years; when the issue was elevated to the Department of the Army level, the PPP period was made indefinite. It underscores the point that AFAP really is looking out for everybody, Barrientes said. “We’re looking after them – not only for the active-duty and retirees, but also for the people served by Survivor Outreach Services, those surviving spouses, and we also look at wounded warriors as well. We’re looking for ways to improve quality of life for everyone.” For more information about the AFAP program at Fort Bliss, call (915) 568-2672 or visit blissmwr.com/afap.

Army sponsorship helps make mobile lifestyle a little easier Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing
Relocation can be challenging for service members and their families. As a program assistant with the Relocation Assistance Program, Kimberly Gold sees it every day. Luckily, she also sees Soldiers and civilians who are willing to help. As part of the Total Army Sponsorship Program, these Soldiers and civilians get involved and help newcomers navigate the ins and outs of their new home at Fort Bliss, and Army-wide. “TASP is a vital component of the mobile military lifestyle,” Gold said, noting that the program helps commanders assist Soldiers, civilians and employees relocating into and out of their commands. Incoming Soldiers and civilians benefit from TASP because experienced sponsors can provide them with firsthand knowledge of the unit and installation they have been assigned to. “The benefits to the incoming Soldiers and civilians is truly unlimited,” Gold said. “A sponsor can orient the incoming Soldier or civilian to the gaining installation so they can quickly adapt to their new home and focus on the mission.” Because the Total Army Sponsorship Program does so much to help newcomers adapt and focus, it is vital to the strength of the Army. TASP supports readiness by reducing the stress associated with reassignment, Gold explained. “It also enhances unit cohesion, resiliency, and esprit de corps,”
she continued. “Fort Bliss follows the concept of DAFT-C, which stands for discipline, accountability, fitness, training and community. A strong sponsorship program really exemplifies the community in the DAFT-C that our commanding general prides our installation on.” The newcomers and the installations aren’t the only ones who benefit from TASP; sponsors benefit, as well. TASP relies on outstanding Soldiers and civilian sponsors to be most effective, Gold noted. “Becoming a sponsor gives that individual an opportunity to give back to their Army community,” Gold said. “They become the face of the unit, installation and the surrounding area, and can really make that positive first impression of their gaining installation. “At Fort Bliss, we truly are the premier installation to be assigned to and it is an honor to be an ambassador for this installation to the incoming Soldier or civilian,” she added. Certified sponsors must complete a two-part training annually. The online portion, e Sponsorship Application and Training, may be completed at http://apps/mhf.dod.mil/esat. Classroom trainings may be taken once a month through the Relocation Assistance Program at Army Community Service. Register for the class online at blissmwr.com/relocation. Special unit trainings can be scheduled by calling (915) 569-4227 ext. 6. To learn more, call Relocation Assistance at (915) 569-4ACS.

Debt free, stress free holidays Giving your loved ones the gift of financial security
Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing
... Isn’t it a “ much bigger
It happens every year: The whirlwind of wrapping paper and ribbons has settled, the New Year has been toasted and the holiday season has come to an end. Except that it hasn’t, because the credit card bills have yet to arrive ... and you’re going to be paying off this Christmas until the next one rolls around. The debt of Christmas past – that’s what Zenaida Gutierrez, a personal financial readiness specialist with Fort Bliss Army Community Service calls it. And it’s not a good thing. “If we’ve got credit card debt, then we’re definitely still paying for Christmas past, and every holiday in between,” Gutierrez said. “We’re bombarded – the holidays, the holidays, the holidays – and every time you turn around, you’ve got to get bigger, you’ve got to get better,” she continued. “But you actually get to enjoy the holiday when you’re not worried about how you’re going to pay off the debt later.” The pressure our society places on us to “go big” for the holidays filters down through the family – and so does the financial fallout. “Today, our children are the Joneses,” she said. “And that’s one of the reasons that parents feel obligated to make sure their children are keeping up with the Joneses. You want your children to have the best. “But what is the best?” Gutierrez asked. “The best is having a parent that doesn’t have financial woes and troubles, because a parent with financial worries is an angry parent.” How do you put down the credit card and back away from the cash register? “First, you make a commitment that you won’t go into debt this holiday season,” Gutierrez said. “You make that commitment to yourself and your family, for whom you have to provide the basic living expenses.” Next, you set a financial goal. Make a budget. How much are you going to spend? Be sure to include everything from gifts to decorations to travel expenses. Once you have a figure, divide that number by the number of paydays remaining until Christmas. Now you know how much money you need to reserve from each paycheck. “Here’s some other food for thought: Are you going to put out new lights? Are you going to buy a tree? Are you going to have the

same holiday decor as you did last year? These all need to go into your budget, too,” Gutierrez noted. “If you’re traveling, project that cost and put it in there,” she continued. “It doesn’t have to be exact, but put a number there to get started. Project your mileage, the cost of gasoline, and don’t forget that you’re going to spend money once you get there.” To avoid accumulating debt, it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. But sometimes, we get excited when stores’ flashy holiday displays are calling our names. “We continue to get caught off guard,” Gutierrez said. “How do we deal with the unexpected? We try the best we humanly can. Some of us procrastinate, and we didn’t realize another Christmas was going to roll around until we walk into the store and they’ve put it there. “Here’s the thing: Those decorations are going to be there, and they’re going to be on sale by the time it’s really time for us to use them,” she continued. “So we make that commitment. We sit down, and we forecast how much this is going to cost us this year, and we divide it by those five pay periods to see if it will fit within our monthly budget. If it doesn’t, we make plans for next year.” Once the new year rolls around, you plan again for the next 12 months – and it’s easier to divide by 24 pay periods than it is by five, Gutierrez observed. “Some people base their measure of themselves on material things,” she said. “But isn’t it a much bigger gift to your family when they know that you’ve got the basics covered?” If you fall off the financial wagon, don’t worry – the experts at the Financial Readiness Program are there to get you back on track. When that January credit card statement comes around, head their way. “We’ll make a plan to have your Christmas paid off this year, or to help you avoid accumulating any debt in the coming year,” Gutierrez said. “The plan is to be out of debt and planning for the future at the same time. New Enlisted Spouse Training Series bridges the gap Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing
“A very wise woman mentioned that, as a military spouse, she has no job in the Army – but her Soldier does,” said Leba Hirsch, Army Family Team Building program manager at Fort Bliss Army Community Service. “Even though she has no job in the Army, there are some things that, historically and traditionally, units and Soldiers and the Army as a whole have expected of spouses at her level.” These expectations can come as a surprise to many spouses who find their Soldiers, and themselves, in leadership roles. A new Enlisted Spouse Training Series offered by AFTB looks to take the guesswork out of spouses moving into the role of mentor. The enlisted spouse series includes the First Sergeant Spouse Seminar, the Recruiter Spouse Seminar and the Drill Sergeant Spouse Seminar. Each seminar is designed to address the experience of the Soldiers playing each of these roles and, by extension, the experience the family will have, as well. The series addresses a crucial piece of the training puzzle that had been missing, Hirsch said. The Army provides training for spouses whose Soldiers are becoming command sergeants major and battalion commanders, which helps those spouses understand what the specific role of their Soldiers is, and what roles they will play. “But you can’t just go from the generic, this-is-for-everybody training and now – boom! – you’re at the battalion command level, and this is what people are going to be expecting, these are some of the choices It Works!

you can make,” Hirsch said. “There was a piece that was missing, and that was at the company level.” The Enlisted Spouses Training Series fills in that gap by addressing leadership roles at the mid-level, she added. The training debuted in September with the first First Sergeant Spouse Seminar. In 2013, the first sergeant and recruiter spouse courses will be offered once per quarter, with the drill sergeant course added later on, if interest is high enough. Hirsch said she sees the courses as focusing the general skills taught by AFTB into a more specific “AFTB is designed for everyone to learn from, to gain knowledge from, to pass onto others as well,” she explained. “In AFTB, we’re teaching military skills, life skills and professional skills that we can use wherever we choose to use them. In the enlisted spouse training seminars, we’re teaching how to convert the skills we’ve learned in AFTB and look at then now from a very specific type of leadership role that we’re going to take on.” The seminars offer first sergeant, recruiter and drill sergeant spouses the chance to learn from someone who has been there, or is currently in the roles that they and their Soldier are filling. “I think the key thing to all three of these courses is the addition of the first sergeant presentation, or the drill sergeant presentation, or the recruiter presentation,” Hirsch said. “What is it really like to be in that role? Learning the role that the spouse of that individual might take is very key, and having the opportunity to hear from a panel of those who are either currently in those

positions are recently out of those positions, who can address those concerns, those fears – just answer the simple questions – means so much.” Before the Enlisted Spouse Training Series came around, that didn’t happen, Hirsch noted. “We learned by mistake,” she explained. “We learned by example, both good and bad. I know some spouses who came to their roles with very little experience, and were really hungering for someone to share their experience. There really wasn’t a way for that to happen, unless they happened to find someone who said, ‘Oh, I remember what that was like,’ or ‘It’s really tough when that happens.’” Learning from the experience of others can help spouses new to leadership roles make educated decisions about what roles they’re going to take. “Many of us are really searching to find what our role is,” Hirsch said. “As a spouse, truthfully, I think our role is to mentor others. We’re trying to empower those spouses whose Soldiers are coming up into that level so that they can be good resources and they can be good mentors, so they can be good role models to their spouses. “When you look at it from the mentorship perspective, it’s really about providing these spouses who want to be mentors with the tools that they need, the tools that they will use to mentor successfully,” she added. Giving happiness
Spread holiday cheer through community service Tephanie Hopper, Army Volunteer Corps Manager
It’s so easy to get trapped in the hustle and bustle and forget what the holidays are truly about, and that is giving. The holiday season is full of excitement, lights, carolers and non-stop gatherings. But there are some people right out of your front door who are less fortunate with no families, no homes, and definitely no presents. This holiday season participate in the “Season of Giving.” You can help out and spread some holiday cheer by giving back to your community. No matter how large or small, good things follow those who have a joyous and giving spirit. So why don’t you give happiness today through volunteering in our community? Volunteering during this special time will center your attention on the true meaning of the season. Volunteering provides m a n y benefits
for both the volunteer and the organization that needs volunteers. For the volunteers, they could acquire new skills, meet new people, and get that special warm and fuzzy good feeling from helping others. For the organization, they could be receiving much-needed and valued help at the busiest time of the year. This could also inspire volunteers to share their experiences and help recruit others to volunteer. Before deciding what organization to volunteer for, it is highly recommended that you research different organizations online and gain an understanding on the overall objectives of that organization. You should try to learn what the organization does and then determine if you have a special gift or talent you could use to help that organization. If you make the decision to volunteer, you will benefit a lot more from the volunteering experience if you find something that fits you best. Choosing to volunteer is one of the best decisions you can make. By volunteering, you would exemplify the true spirit of giving. This year, the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps will host its first Season of Giving Community Service Fair from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, November 2 at Freedom Crossing. The intent of the Season of Giving Community Service Fair is to bring awareness of volunteer opportunities throughout the season. The event will also bring awareness to the resources needed by the agencies that do so much for the underprivileged in our community. This year, be a part of something meaningful and fulfilling during this holiday season. Give happiness ... volunteer! Contact the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps to learn more about volunteering during this holiday season. Call (915) 5697733 or visit blissmwr.com/volunteer for more information. You can also find the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps on Facebook: Search for Fort Bliss Volunteers and “like” the page to keep up with volunteer needs in our community.
