ABOUT THE COVER We are recognizing all of our military children in this Spring issue. We’ve asked our patrons to send photos of their children and include one hashtag word that describes them the best. Each and every one of the photos shows strength, character, love and the happiness of our military children here at Fort Bliss. It was hard but we picked out one photo that we felt best exhibited the sweet innocence of a military kid. Meet Delilah she’s #Sassy! We couldn’t leave out the other amazing submissions, though! Look to see more of our military children on page 38-39. @blissmwr @blissmwr

Balloons floating in the air, music playing from a distance and you see down the road a marching band leading a patriotic parade with captivating floats making its way through Fort Bliss. Did someone say “Paw-ty”? I am turning three and my party is the place you all want to be! Come out and help celebrate my birthday, May 3, with cupcakes, friends and fun. The Fort Bliss Veterinary Services is throwing me a party, and they want all of you to join us for the festivities. There will be inflatables, games and more. The Fort Bliss Veterinary Clinic will also be hosting their annual “Repair a Bear” clinic from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Bring out your stuffed animal that needs some TLC and let the wonderful clinic staff take care of you. They repaired my tail last year and it is as good as new. The party will begin at 4 p.m. and will go until the cows come home or 7 p.m., whichever comes first. This event is pet friendly (obviously), so grab your furry friends, stuffed animals and bring out the whole family! If you are looking for gift ideas for me (wink wink), I like all varieties of dog food, treats, blankets, toys and anything else you think I might enjoy. My birthday gifts will all be donated! Sharing is caring and I, Milo, pledge to share my gifts with our local shelters. To sweeten the deal, I will give a complimentary sno-cone for each gift I receive. See you all May 3, until then… stay PAW-SOME!

What a Par-Tee Fort Bliss MWR and our supporters had! On January 19th we got together with some of our generous sponsors and valued partners to take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a fun-filled evening. Underwood Golf Complex provided great food and exceptional customer service to all our attendees. There were specialty-themed cocktails, a glow scavenger hunt on golf carts, closest to the pin contests, giant hungry hippo and much more. A great time was enjoyed by all. said Eric Hildreth, chief of FMWR Community Recreation. “We are very excited to have been chosen to host this monumental sporting event. This is our opportunity to show the world just how amazing this installation and its people are.” Some of the participating nations this year include the United States, Bahrain, South Korea, Canada and Brazil. Countries in Africa and Europe will also be participating. All of these players are looking to unseat the reigning champions: France. Fort Bliss will benefit as the host of this year’s games in ways beyond the recognition as a first-class world sporting platform. Championship soccer requires a championship field and this is one of the tangible, long lasting benefits the games will bring to Fort Bliss MWR. Stout field will transform this spring in preparation with new LED lighting, a resurfaced track, and an artificial turf upgrade. Athletes will arrive June 20 and the opening ceremony will be June 21 at Noel Parade field. Games commence June 22 and the finals will be July 3 where the 2018 World Champion will be crowned. MUD CHALLENGE @its best RECREATION
Teia Mack
Recreation Specialist
The 2018 Fort Bliss Old Ironsides Mud Challenge is fast approaching. This has been one of the biggest and most wellattended events at Fort Bliss. In previous years, there have been 700 to 1,000 participants and we are expecting the same attendance this year. This event has also had a wide range of ages participate from as young as 5 years old up to 70 years old. There will be more than 18 obstacles to defeat, both challenging and fun! If you are new to this event please don’t be intimidated. You will see a diverse
cross-section of fitness levels and body types ready to tackle them all. Showing up on race day and competing with friends and family is highly encouraged, as you will have a built-in cheering squad for each obstacle. Costumes are also encouraged, but keep in mind that what you wear may be in tatters by the time you finish, including your shoes. The areas of your body that take the most abuse during an obstacle course event are your hands, forearms, elbows, knees, shins and feet. You may want to check out obstacle course gear online for tips on what to wear. Keep in mind that each course features different obstacles, distances, and ter-
rain – even if you have participated in an event similar to this one. Here are some helpful tips: assess the obstacle before engaging; watch other competitors as they tackle an obstacle on their success or failures; commit to conquering each obstacle and help each other out! But mostly, take your time and have fun! The Mud Challenge will be May 12 at the Air Assault Tower, located off Jeb Stuart and Pershing road. There will be three waves for participants to sign up for, 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. This event is open to the public. The cost will be $20 for Active Duty; $25 DoD ID cardholders; $35 for all others. Pre-registration will be from now through May 9. You may register on raceroster.com or

‘READING TAKES YOU EVERYWHERE’ Rachel Arizaga
Mickelsen Community Library
Looking for something to do this summer with your children? Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Mickelsen Community Library! The theme this year is ‘Reading Takes You Everywhere’. This program is free and open to DoD ID cardholders ages 4 and older. The age categories are as follows, Children ages 5-6; School Age students ages 7-9; Tweens ages 10-12; Teens ages 13-17 and Adults ages 18 and older. The benefits of summer reading are clear, according to the national research from Dominican University, students who participate in library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of
the next school year than those who did not participate. To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. The Summer Reading Program reminds children that reading is for fun—as well as for learning. The Summer Reading Program al-
lows participants to read books, collect incentives, and participate in a party at the end of the program. There will be a kick-off party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 2 where staff will be on hand to help with registration. Participants will be able to enjoy pizza, cookies, crafts and games! The program will run from June 4 through July 21. Then, there will be an end of program party July 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be food, crafts, games, extreme water inflatables and much more! There’s so much to see, so much to do at the library! There’s no better place to take your children. The library is a place to learn, read and have fun – a place the whole family can enjoy. Dance RECITAL
CHILD YOUTH SERVICES
Neona Mejia
Family and MWR SKIESUnlimited
Each year, the SKIESUnlimited Dance Program has one formal recital giving the students the opportunity to perform on stage. While the dancers are learning technique and vocabulary in the classroom, they also learn about the theatre, what a performance is, and proper etiquette as a dancer. Opportunities like this, help our youth develop character and confidence, and team building skills, while learning a craft they enjoy! This year, the SKIESUnlimited Dance Program will present the classic story of, “The Wizard of Oz,” for their formal recital in May. The story tells the adventures of young Dorothy as she dreams of a faraway land, where she meets three distinct characters looking for a brain, a heart and courage. The SKIESUnlimited dance instructors, Wendy Behrens, Heather Schaefer and I, are working together to bring a collaborative performance, which will include all registered dance students. While there are no speaking roles, the musical intros and dancers will tell the story of Dorothy and her friends as they venture through the Land of Oz. Students will be cast as munchkins, winged monkeys, and the main characters: Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch of the North.

All Army installations provide services that include health counselling provided by Army Community Health Nurses (CHN), as well as parent education classes and play mornings. These services target Families with children, 0-3 years of age. Participation in any of these activities is strictly voluntary and there are no time limits imposed on duration of service but Families generally stay involved at this level for 4-6 months. Referrals for NPSP services are accepted via self-referral, health professionals, and command. 2494 Ricker Road, 915-568-9129
PARENTING/LIFE SKILLS/ SAFETY/EDUCATION

Their goal is to develop parenting skills and knowledge, reduce stressors that may increase the risk of child abuse or neglect and help Families cope with the adjustments, and changes of military life. 2494 Ricker Road, 915-568-9129
