Let me be the first to offer support to the 2010-2011 Dallas Mavericks as they pursue the Guinness Record for World’s Longest Victory Lap due to the most recent financial struggle between the players and the owners. It’s hard to decide which cross section of the 1% to support. It’s understood that the recession and high salaries are stressing each franchise’s wallets, but honestly – do you care? Every night on the news we see troubling reports about the unemployed, tumbling stock prices, and the sporadic return of the McRib. We have enough to worry about without losing an entire season of basketball. We all have seen this perennial staring contest between the owners and players going on for decades, and a major difference this time around seems to be the increasing seriousness of the decertification talks. Back in early October, seven agents sent their clientele a “warning” letter that helped sow the seeds of the recent union busting sentiments. Pair this letter with the 50-50 profit split proposal and our basketball heroes are loading up on Clif Bars and organizing drum circles. After the November 6 meeting, Commissioner Stern basically told the union to either accept up to a 51% revenue share by Wednesday or else. This move will either unite the players under the umbrella of the union, or be the beginning of the end. Again, I had to ask myself...do I care? The viral videos of players panhandling and getting regular jobs have been very entertaining. Watching Kris Humpries turn into a mail-order groom before our eyes has been a poignant commentary on marriage and celebrity. While I want to sympathize with one side or the other, the amount of money being fought over is in the hundreds of millions. And it all just reminds me that I can’t afford to fix that weird noise my car makes. I know, deep down, that the real victims

of this lockout are actually a grab bag of the 99%; the stadium workers and staff; the local business and restaurant owners that depend on those NBA games for revenues are the real casualties. Certainly, the big winners in all of this is the NCAA. Students that may have opted to join the NBA will be staying in the college dorms and locker rooms again this year. Also, their ratings and revenues will see a bump from fans that cannot deny their love of game until their beloved stars return. Even after realizing what could have been this season, I have no shame in confessing my guilty pleasure of ESPN’s back up programming. If you haven’t seen that early evening line-up of lumberjack and Crossfit competition shows you’re missing out. Although I have mostly soured to this entire process, I am curious to see how this pans out. This spring, after the NFL player’s union decertified and the anti-trust suits were settled, the majority of players signed back with the union to do their collective bargaining for the future. Wednesday is the next big meeting and I refuse to neglect or dash the hopes for those of you that desperately want to see a NBA season play out. Keeping that in mind: NBA 2K12 is currently available in stores and online for the PC, XBox and Playstation systems.

Two high scoring offenses will showcase their talents on Saturday night. Heisman trophy candidates LaMichael James and Andrew Luck will try to lead their respective teams to victory. Essentially this is the Pac-12 title game. Whichever team wins this game has the inside track to winning the North Division. Stanford is undefeated and Oregon’s lone loss was the season opener at Jerry World to LSU.

When these two teams faceoff, there will be nothing left in the tank when all is said and done. Simply put, they really don’t like each other. From Rex Ryan’s inflammatory remarks to Wes Welker’s sly comments on “Footgate” who knows what this week’s fodder will be. There’s a three way tie in the AFC East so this game has added importance. Dana White on UFC’s Maiden Voyage on FOX

By Mike Calimbas www.txmma.com UFC President Dana White, heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez, and challenger Junior dos Santos spoke on the latest media conference call in advance of the highly anticipated title fight and network debut event, UFC on FOX. While much of the talk centered on the title fight itself, focus was also on the back-end aspects of the upcoming show. After all, this will be the promotion’s first foray into producing an event in concert with their new global partner. While the UFC does retain control over most aspects of the upcoming show, as they’ve intended all along, there will also be some changes as the UFC moves into a new era in front of a much larger mainstream audience. “This is going to be a different format than we’ve ever done before,” said Dana White. ”Obviously this is a show featuring one fight so we’re doing a lot of things differently. We are going to be rehearsing for this from Thursday [as opposed to the day of the event]. There’s going to be a lot of pressure here to pull this off and make this thing great. There’s going to be a lot of backstage features, we are going to be talking to both guys backstage before they fight which isn’t something we’ve done for a very long time.” By using the UFC’s tried-and-true model as far as shooting and producing the fights while integrating FOX’s model for how they cover sports, White and the rest of the UFC brass are hoping to hit a grand slam with a broadcast audience that will undoubtedly be larger than any they’ve ever been able to reach before. “We’ve working hard and we’re going to nail this thing,” Dana said. “The fight is the least of my worries. I’m confident in Junior and Cain. We made this fight the first fight on free TV for a reason.” CAIN VELASQUEZ 9-0-0 6’1” 240

Moving on, the UFC front man also spoke about his own personal satisfaction in finally being able to put together an event of this magnitude, fulfilling a longtime dream to bring the UFC to audiences in the way boxing (his first love) was brought to him through ABC’s Wide World of Sports. “This is a throw-back to the old days of boxing; we are putting a big fight – a huge fight – on free TV to expose this thing to a new audience. Our goal has always been to bring big fights back to network television; we are thinking long-term for the future of this sport. It is an investment in the future of the UFC. Fans that have never seen the UFC before will see this show and that’s why we decided to put Cain and Junior in this position. This is going to be an awesome fight; a great fight.”

STARS Stars Lack Fan Support

Loui Eriksson’s pinball goal at 3:55 of overtime lifted the Dallas Stars to a wild 7-6 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night. Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen played his worst game in nearly two years, asking the Stars to step up and cover for some poor play in net for the first time this season. “Today is I think the first night that I think Kari’s been average,” Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. “Some huge saves and some things I think he’d like to have back. But you

look at the great goalies, they all have an off night, but it’s like once every eight games. I’ll take that any day of the week, and I think Kari is trending towards being one of those elite goalies. Yeah, tonight wasn’t his best night, but I’ll take the eight that he’s already saved us this year.” The announced attendance at the Colorado game was 11,981, but the actual rear ends in seats count was much less. A quick glance at the NHL attendance stats tells a disturbing story. The Stars average attendance through 7 home games this season is 10,001. That ranks dead last in the league, an embarrassment for DFW sports fans. Sure, there are plenty of excuses with the recent World Series drama in Arlington and the resulting hangover that can bring. If you look close there are plenty of comparisons between the current Stars organization and where the Rangers were just a few seasons ago. The Stars are going through an ownership change, they have at least seven new faces on the roster bringing renewed energy

to a team which has not made the playoffs in 3 years, and GM Joe Nieuwendyk just hired an exciting new coach in the off season. Does that sound like a familiar scenario? This hockey team could very well be on the cusp of doing something just as special as the Rangers have done the past 2 years.

The hard core fan base is fortunately still there for the Stars. You can go around the arena at every home game and point them out. They are there through thick and thin. What this team needs now are the “bandwagon” fans to show up. Winning is contagious and these “happy when winning” fans need to show up in force to add more energy to a sports organization badly in need of fan support. One of the biggest roster surprises on a team full of surprises this season has been defenseman Sheldon Souray. He is 10th among all defensemen in the NHL in scoring so far, and he leads all NHL defensemen with a plus8 rating. More important, Souray has brought physicality to the Stars, a determination in front of the net that is inspiring the rest of the Dallas Stars to follow suit. He is epitomizing what Gulutzan and Nieuwendyk spoke about in the preseason of becoming a team that is “hard to play against”, one that punishes opponents in the defensive zone and in front of the net. Frogs Rush by the Cowboys The TCU Horned Frogs rushed for a season-high 390 yards and four touchdowns in beating the Wyoming Cowboys 31-20 Saturday for their fourth win a row. Waymon James had a careerhigh 181 yards on the ground to lead TCU and Ed Wesley tacked on 120 rushing yards of his own. Matthew Tucker nearly gave TCU the 100yard rushing trifecta, but came up just short with 90 yards and two rushing TDs. Casey Pachall completed 17 of 24 passes for 227 yards and an interception. The Frogs had trouble holding onto the football, coughing it up four times, including two inside the Wyoming’s 10 yard line. “We were lucky,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “You got to protect the football; we didn’t do a good job of that. We won’t be able to win the game next week if we don’t protect the football.”

The Horned Frogs travel to No. 5 Boise State this weekend. TCU gained a season-high 617 yards of total offense, the seventh best single game offensive output in TCU football history. Quarterback Brett Smith led Wyoming with 210 yards and two touchdowns passing and 68 yards rushing before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter after taking a hard hit from TCU’s Tank Carder. “A lot of people said that changed the momentum of the game,” Carder said. “It’s awesome that I was a part of that and able to do that for us so that we can get a win and come out here and go into Boise undefeated in conference.” The game was tied 17-17 at halftime after Wyoming defensive back Blair Burns intercepted a Pachall pass at the goal line with 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter. “You can’t turn the ball over in the red zone; you have to at least get a field goal,” Patterson said. “The one I was really upset with was the interception right before the half. If we don’t throw the ball away, we are up 20-17. There was no reason for that ball to be thrown.” TCU vs. #5 BOISE STATE SAT . NOV. 12 - 2:30pm VERSUS BRONCO STADIUM

THEY’RE GOING BOWLING AGAIN After losing back-to-back conference games for the first time since 2008, the SMU Mustangs looked to rebound against Tulane last Saturday in their 2011 Homecoming Game. SMU now (6-3, 4-2) took a big lead into the half and then held off a second half comeback bid by the Tulane Green Wave to win the game 45-24. J.J. McDermott threw for three touchdowns and Zach Line rushed for three scores to lead the Mustangs. McDermott was 29 of 40 for 322 yards passing for the Mustangs and Line compiled 143 yards on the ground. Tulane trailed 31-0 at halftime, but cut the SMU lead to within 38-24 at the end of the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, the Green Wave marched to the SMU 25 yard line when QB Ray Griffin fumbled, and Chris Banjo recovered for the Mustangs. The win puts the Mustangs in the running for a December trip to Hawaii and a third consecutive bowl game. That seems to have lifted the spirits of a team who has seen its conference title hopes all but go up in smoke in the last three weeks. When asked about the possibility of facing his old team in a bowl game head coach June Jones said “I do know this, if Hawaii is bowl eligible and we’re bowl eligible it’s a sellout and it really helps the state of Hawaii and that’s why I’d like to go.” The Mustangs do have some regular season business to get through before they start packing their sunscreen, however, and it begins this Saturday as the Midshipmen of Navy visit Ford Stadium in the last non-conference game of the season. Navy (3-6) is coming to Dallas fresh off of a beat down they handed Troy 42-14. That win snapped a six game losing streak for the academy. Navy is lead on offense by QB Kriss Proctor and RB Alexander Teich. Proctor has rushed for ten touchdowns while adding seven more through the air. Teich is averaging almost five yards a carry for Navy. The game kicks at 2:30 pm Saturday on FSN. NAVY vs. SMU SAT . NOV. 12 - 2:30pm FSN GERALD FORD STADIUM

I really thought North Texas was ready to step up, after watching a full game of execution against ULM; UNT reverted back to only playing part of the game. This time it was the lack lustrous first half that hurt UNT. It’s hard to recover after falling behind 31-0 at the half to Arkansas State. The Mean Green did have a bye week, and they needed it. QB Derek Thompson went down early with a concussion, and LB Zach Orr is out for the season, this will be a hole in the defense that will need to

BIG XII Game of the Week

Trojan Horse?

Now that it’s official, this week’s match up between Texas and Missouri marks another sad chapter for the Big 12 Conference. Missouri has been a part of the Big 12 Conference since 1907, which initially was the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association before morphing into the Big Eight in 1964 and later on as the Big 12 in 1996. It’s inevitable that these Tigers will be joining their LSU and Auburn brethren eventually, however, Missouri will initially spend time in the SEC East Division. That being said, after this game Missouri only has two Big 12 games remaining this season. Missouri is coming off of a 42-39 loss to Baylor. The game was pretty much over in the fourth quarter when Baylor scored to extend their lead to 42-25. Missouri wasn’t able to overcome the deficit this time. Leading the Tigers is sophomore quarterback James Franklin (Corinth). He possesses a pretty good arm and has some nifty running skills. Franklin’s accuracy all depends

be quickly filled. UNT now will travel to face Troy who is 1-3 in conference play. Troy can put the ball in the air, and will get some points, but that’s about it. Troy will have problems and the opportunities for their opponent to take away the game will be there. UNT will need to take this opportunity to notch another win and pull to 3-3 in conference play. Hopefully after the short rest Thompson will be able to return and get this offense back in tune. It’s there; it’s just a matter of getting everything in motion and not letting up. Dunbar should be able to put up some good numbers against the Trojans, and the Mean Green will need top performance from everyone, starters and second stringers included to be able to finish this season above .500 in conference. Over the course of the season, in conference and out, we’ve seen late let ups, fast starts, slow starts, and full commitment from McCarney’s troops. There has been a bunch of “three and outs” as the Eagles have tried to come together under this new approach. If McCarney and the players took advantage of the break to get focused and tie all the talent this team possesses together, maybe we can see a “three and out” run to finish the season. This is the only way to finish above .500 in conference and would be a huge accomplishment for the development and advancement from where UNT Football was prior to the arrival of McCarney.

on his patience. Henry Josey has stepped up as the main rushing threat. He’s already rushed for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns this season. With an 8.6-yard average per carry, Josey is a legitimate scoring threat on most plays. Slot specialist T. J. Moe and All-American tight end Michael Egnew have partnered up for most of the receptions this year. An experienced o-line has been a huge benefit to Franklin and Josey. The Tiger defensive line is deep and experienced, so are their linebackers; the secondary, not so much. The Texas Longhorns have won back-to-back games after losing a pair earlier this month to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. They seem to have found strength in the running game. David Ash has emerged as the starting quarterback with Case McCoy serving in reserve. Look for Joe Bergeron to be the primary back with Fozzy Whittaker getting plenty of opportunities. The Longhorns haven’t been too keen on passing the ball much with their running attack operating so smoothly. David Ash did complete two passes to Mike Davis in last Saturday’s game for 72 yards. Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz has managed to take last year’s underachievers and turn them into an aggressive, ball-hawking bunch. If Texas has a weak link on defense it’s their corners. They’re young and make mistakes.

You’re from Georgia and went to Georgia Tech on scholarship, what was the feeling like being drafted by the Falcons? I grew up 40 miles south of Atlanta and played football since the time I was 6-yearsold. I’ve always had a passion for the game of football. I’ve always loved it and had dreams and aspirations from the time I can remember telling my mother and father I wanted to play in the NFL. I had a lot of people that helped paved the way. Playing four years for Georgia Tech and being drafted by my hometown team and playing football from the time I was 6 to 33 years old in a 20-mile radius was a dream come true. Tell us a little about the Keith Brooking Children’s Foundation and what it does? I established the foundation in 2004 when I was playing for the Atlanta Falcons and

brought a chapter here to the DFW area last year, it’s been a little over a year now. It benefits foster children and the program here in the North Texas area awards scholarships to kids who need our help. We give them the funds to create a defining opportunity. My mother helped start the foundation; she always kept foster kids while I was growing up. We established this program to create selfesteem and self-worth for these kids, get them involved in extra-curricular activities, to give them an identity, create work-ethic, set goals, and create opportunity. We all have defining moments in our life; mine was the motivation to start this program. One of these days you are actually going to retire, what’s next for you? [Laughing] What football means to me is hard to put into words, what it’s meant to me to me in my life – not just what it’s giving me playing in the NFL, but the relationships, the coaches that have affected me in a positive way that has made a very big difference in making me the man I am today. You know, I can go on and on about the relationships and the impact they have made on my life. Now it’s about getting the most out of every opportunity when I set in between those lines. But in saying all that, I have set myself up to where the game doesn’t define me, it’s something part of who I am, but it doesn’t make me who I am. When you play long enough in the league and you see the turnover of guys coming in and guys going out due to injury, not maximizing your ability for whatever reason, you realize that it can be taken from you at anytime because you never you – you absolutely do not know – it’s out of your hands and control.

Let’s talk football culture. Texas prides itself on being a big football state. Does Georgia do the same thing? What are the differences between Georgia and Texas football? I think Texas high school football is bigger than Georgia. I went to a 5A school in Georgia and we made playoff runs each and every year, played in the quarterfinals a couple years, but you come out here and you see what Texas high school football is about; how serious it is – the facilities are probably one of the bigger differences – I think talent wise you can argue. You can give the edge to Texas, but the prospects that come out of the state of Georgia, it’s documented, but you would probably give the edge to the state of Texas when it comes to a pure talent standpoint. I think the culture is on a whole other level in the state of Texas. When you look at the support you get from the community, the facilities, indoor facilities for high school is something you don’t hear about in the state of Georgia.

The Dallas Cowboys needed to regroup and win against a team that wasn’t as good as they were. They needed to get to 4-4 and keep pace with the New York Giants. They needed to play sound football and carve out a win against the Seattle Seahawks. And they did all that with a 23-13 win on a day that saw three great Cowboy football players inducted into the exclusive Ring of Honor at Cowboys Stadium. The only real negative from the day is the hamstring injury suffered by Miles Austin early in the game. It’s the leg that was healthy before the

Chris Jones was very productive as a stand-in for McBriar in the punting game. Netting over 43 yards a punt is a very good day. Terence Newman had a good interception as did Gerald Sensabaugh and Anthony Spencer made one of the most dynamic plays of the day as the Seahawks were trying a field goal with the score 13-6 Cowboys right after the half. Spencer leaped between the guard and center with perfect timing and blocked the field goal attempt – excellent athletic ability and a big play by Spencer. It was not an inspiring game played with great passion but it was a professional job done with good efficiency. How important? Teams that are 3-5 have made the playoffs 5% of the time. Teams with a 4-4 record have made the playoffs 36% of the time. I’d say that was significant. Also teams that win at least 3 games in November make the playoffs 90% of the time. Romo is 16-2 in November and with the Giants winning against the New England Patriots the Cowboys stay within striking distance of NY, which is what they need to do before playing them twice late in the season. The Ring of Honor Larry Allen - One of the best offensive linemen ever to play the game. His strength, movement and dominance should make him a first round Hall of Fame inductee. Charles Haley - The man with the shortest tenure as a Cowboy to be in the Ring. But his impact on the three championships was off the chart both on and off the field. Simply said, “We couldn’t spell Super Bowl until we got Charles Haley.”

game that is injured and it looks like more time missed by a vital clog in the Cowboy attack. Austin missing time has hindered the development of Dez Bryant because defenses can pay more attention to Bryant when Austin is out. The good was the efficient game by Romo, over 290 yards passing with two touchdowns and no turnovers. The continued good play of DeMarco Murray as he again had a good day on the ground with over 140 yards rushing and averaging over six yards a carry. Jason Witten and Dez Bryant were active and productive with Witten’s touchdown coming at a time that gave the Cowboys a little breathing room. The offensive line protected Romo with a no sack game and

Drew Pearson - Waited 28 years to be inducted. The original #88 and the playmaker supreme that helped Roger Staubach do many magical things. The “Hail Mary” against Minnesota will always be part of the glorious history of the Cowboys. Congratulations to these inductees. Foresight

For Jerry Jones turning America’s Team into the Cash Cowboys was just a matter of time

Just as Yogi was smarter than the average bear, Jerral Wayne Jones is smarter than the average owner. Sure, anyone with enough money and connections can have a team, but can you turn that franchise into a brand? Now take that brand and extend it beyond regional, then make it go national. Now take that national brand and expand it across the globe making your logo nearly as recognizable as the Golden Arches. That is what separates Jerry Jones from any other Joe or Jane Schmoe with a professional sports team. Jerry sees the big picture and though some think of the Dallas Cowboys as just a football team Jerry knows better, they are the football team. The Cowboys didn’t start off as planet Earth’s second most valuable sports franchise (with a net worth of $1.81 billion according to Forbes trailing only Manchester United), they were built deal by deal, idea by idea, into the juggernaut that Jones has created. After graduation from the University of Arkansas, Jones took the role of executive VP of his father’s company Modern Security Life of Springfield, Missouri. The time soon came to diversify his portfolio and Jerry started Jones Oil and Land, a venture that paid off immensely for him. By 1989 Jones was ready for some football – some Cowboy football. The purchase of the Dallas franchise was sung to the tune of $140 million. Jerry was not one to sit around and watch games, this team was purchased with a purpose in mind…to grow. Grow past the mere label of America’s Team, and build an actual meaning behind that name. For 22 years the hunger to achieve that goal has been insatiable. Transcending the Cowboys past touchdowns, tackles, and scoreboards was not a matter of luck, but a matter of focus and determination, even at times when fans, coaches, analysts and yes, even you thought he was crazy. Bringing home three World Champion-

ships in the 1990s did wonders for Dallas’ financial worth allowing the rivers of endorsements to flow freely. The image of what America’s Team represented was solidified. Even going 13-straight seasons without a playoff win could not tarnished the shine of that royal blue star. Sensing a need for a change of venue Jones embarked the city of Arlington, the state of Texas and the entire National Football League on a journey of stupendous proportions to say the least. With the team’s worth at $420 million (Forbes) Jones set out to build the ‘Crown Jewel’ of the Metroplex, Cowboys Stadium. Upon completion the price tag of the fan dubbed Jerry World or Jones Mahal came in just under $1.25 billion. Thanks to 320 luxury suites and 15,000 club seats bringing in $100 million annually and an army of sponsors from Wing Stop to AT&T, Bank of America to Ford and beverages by Pepsi (and Jerry will gladly serve you up a slice of Papa John’s Pizza) Cowboys Stadium has become not only an architectural but a fiscal success. Consistency is key when building an empire. One cannot sway too far to the right or left and hope to stay on course, and Jerry sails his boat straight and true. Rarely stopping to acknowledge detractors, Jones has always – will always – lead from the front. Your opinion of Jerral Wayne Jones is just that, your opinion. But before you make it, just know that every decision that he has ever made concerning the Dallas Cowboys, came with a tremendous love for the silver and blue that could have easily have taken him to the doorstep of financial ruin for the sake of progression. Jerry’s mantra and mission absolutely personifies the Francis Anne Kemble words of “onward, upward…”

The 2011 version of the Dallas Cowboys have been consistently inconsistent on a weekly basis. Their record through the midway point of the current NFL campaign sits at a mediocre 4-4. Perhaps the biggest problem for Cowboys fans is that it is hard to tell if they are getting any better or any worse or just jogging in place on a preset treadmill. “I think our team is learning,” Jason Garrett said of the team’s record. “We’re a work in progress throughout our team, really like every team in the NFL.” At this point a season ago, the Cowboys were reeling at 1-7 and were in the process of saying goodbye to head coach Wade Phillips. Following this year’s off-season that saw the departures of high-priced veterans Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Leonard Davis, Igor Olshansky, Marc Colombo and Andre Gurode, many assumed that this was the beginning of a rebuilding process that would translate into another long year. It certainly meant there would be no premature talk of going to the Super Bowl as was the prevailing theme prior to last year’s 50th anniversary season that saw the big game played at Cowboys Stadium. Most of the United States watched the Cowboys season opener on the road against the New York Jets on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 and saw the Cowboys throw away a game they certainly should have won. And unlike a year ago, there was not a horrific holding call on OT Alex Barron to gloss over a brutal loss. Then came the victory over San Francisco in which Tony Romo played with a punctured lung while leading the team to a huge comeback win. After beating the Redskins for their home opener on Monday Night Football, fans began to get their hopes up and that the Cowboys had learned from their mistakes against the Jets. Blowing a 27-3 lead at home to the Detroit Lions dropped expectations with a resounding thud. All of the good will over the previous two weeks disappeared. Wins over St. Louis and Seattle mixed in with a loss to the New England Patriots with Tom Brady leading his team the length of the field for victory and a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles has most fans simply scratching their heads in confusion.

The offense has been somewhat of an enigma as quarterback Tony Romo has 158 completions for 1959 yards and 11 touchdowns. However factoring in his seven interceptions and three fumbles summon images of the Detroit Lions epic collapse-game that included a pick-six to former Cowboys bust Bobby Carpenter. He did look a little more like the quarterback we all hope he can be against Seattle, going 19-of-31 for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie running back DeMarco Murray has been the brightest spot on the unit with his breakout game that saw him shatter Emmitt Smith’s single game rushing record for a Cowboys running back and Tony Dorsett’s rookie rushing record for a game with 253 yards against St. Louis. The offensive line has often struggled as they have dealt with injuries and mixing in rookies Tyron Smith and Bill Nagy. The receiving corps has also dealt with injuries as Dez Bryant and Miles Austin have each been banged up during the year.

GRADE: C What the What!?! It’s been a roller coaster season for the Cowboys. Some surprises and some let downs. Here’s a comparison of the offensive weapons to date. Player DeMarco Murray Felix Jones

Attempts Yards Average TDs 80 539 6.7 1 63 253 4.0 1

Player Receptions Yards Jason Witten 44 548 Dez Bryant 26 443 Miles Austin 28 403 Laurent Robinson 24 368

Average TDs 12.5 4 17.0 4 14.4 4 15.3 2

New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan took charge of the unit with a swagger during training camp in San Antonio. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware has 12 sacks -- including four multi-sack efforts in the first seven games -- midway through the season as he continues to make a case as the best defensive player in the NFL. Several bright spots include the play of safety Abe Elam and linebacker Sean Lee. On the other hand, cornerbacks Mike Jenkins, Terence Newman and Orlando Scandrick have struggled to stay healthy and have been largely ineffective when on the field. While the Cowboys did make a serious attempt to upgrade this position by going after prized free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, it is safe to say that at this time Newman remains the team’s best corner. It is also apparent that linebackers Bradie James and Keith Brooking have both lost a step when it comes to pass defense. The defense appeared to be exposed by the offensive attack of the Michael Vick-led Eagles 34-7 destruction of Dallas. The worst part for Ryan’s defense was the inability to stop the run after he proclaimed the Eagles as the “All-Hype Team.” “You jest at scars that never felt a wound. That’s Romeo and Juliet for you guys,” Ryan said. “We’ve all had our moments. That was my moment. I just had a few more people watching. It wasn’t my best, but let’s get it on.”

The highlight of the special teams has been the performance of rookie placekicker Dan Bailey. He has connected on 17-of-18 field goals for an average of 94.4 percent. Bailey even stepped in to punt as Mat McBriar after a nerve condition in his ankle and foot caused him to leave the Philadelphia game. In a stark contrast to a season ago, Joe DeCamillis’ coverage group has not shown the tendency to give up the big play. With the lack of depth at so many spots on the roster, one is left to wonder why kickoff ‘specialist’ David Buehler is still on the roster.

GRADE: C

Many Cowboys fans were giving new head coach Jason Garrett credit in training camp for bringing Rob Ryan and his brash personality aboard to lead the defense. While Garrett can come off as stoic, Ryan tends to lean to the boisterous side. “I just admired how he’s coached and I’ve admired how his defenses have played,” Garrett said of Ryan. “And certainly his personality is a bonus. I think he’s a guy that people respond to. You walk down the hall, you respond to him. You’re in a meeting room, you respond to him. And certainly out on the practice field and in the game situation, you respond to this guy. He works his players hard, but they love to play for him.”

Meanwhile, Garrett is in control of the offense, which has seen Tony Romo’s coslty mistakes in a year that many had hoped and expected him to step into a leadership role. Another big question mark on offense is the young line. Granted, the reason the line is so young was the house cleaning done prior to the start of camp. While Ryan’s defense has been dominant at times, it seems that teams are starting to figure out a few things judging by the running attack put on by the Eagles and the Seahawks.

The Mecca Restaurant A History Lesson for the Taste Buds

By Judy Chamberlain jchamberlain@blitzweekly.com

In 1938, David O. Selznick began filming Gone with the Wind, war was brewing in Europe, Benny Goodman and His Orchestra became the first jazz musicians to headline a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City, oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia and The Mecca Restaurant opened its doors at its original location near Dallas’ Love Field. I’m a vintage girl, a traditionalist who adores old-time values, manners and bespoke craftsmanship. In truth, 1938 was a horrible year. Comfort food then, as now, was an important part of the American way of life. Pies and cakes made from scratch, freshly baked bread, stews, chicken (when there was any) and dumplings, these were the simple pleasures that made life a little more pleasant during very hard times. Such is still the case. How nice, then, to find that Mecca continues to prepare all sorts of homemade, madefrom-scratch food – including its iconic cinnamon rolls with thick icing that are redolent of real butter (and topped with real butter), yeast and plenty of love. The waitresses here are worth the trip even if this kind of food doesn’t appeal to you. Seasoned pros who are more matronly and motherly than sassy, they sit down with you to explain the menu and share the restaurant’s

lore. Evidently, waitressing jobs at The Mecca are coveted prizes. “You practically have to be sitting here when someone drops dead and is wheeled out,” our waitress told us at breakfast recently. “Then you jump up and scream: That’s my job!” Plan on having a big breakfast with heaping portions of grilled ham steak, thick bacon, huge omelets, biscuits and gravy, breakfast tacos, migas (scrambled eggs with corn tortilla chips, onions, spices and tomatoes), French toast, blueberry pancakes, chicken fried steak, rib eye steak, grilled pork chops, eggs Benedict and the like. Breakfast is served all day. Thursday is turkey dinner day; the kitchen roasts several whole turkeys for the occasion, preferring to serve the real deal than going the route of processed deli meats. Turkey here is accompanied by house made cornbread dressing (evidently a lost art; last week at the Southlake Central Market the clerk I asked to

help me find a box of dressing/stuffing mix had no idea what I was talking about) and freshly prepared cranberry sauce. Fried oysters, catfish filets, liver and onions, tuna salad, burgers, sandwiches, chopped sirloin, onion rings and homemade soups round out the lunch menu. There’s even homemade lemon meringue pie. Do you want to eat that for lunch – or for breakfast? I vote for both. Sports fans will love the autographed pictures of Dallas sport stars and other notables. The restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch and serves no vegetables on Sunday, moved to its present location on Harry Hines Boulevard in 1968. HollywoodProfile with Kellan Lutz

Tell us about the film. The story is pretty much the story of Theseus and the journey he goes through. There’s a lost bow that the gods have that can pretty much rule the world. If it’s in the good hands, that’s good, and if it’s in the wrong hands, it can destroy the world or really turn it to evil and have the bad guys rule. Mickey Rourke‘s character ends up getting the bow; so, the gods and myself have to come down and kind of take care of this and step in so the world doesn’t go awry and the Titans end up escap-

ing, and we have to fight the Titans which Zeus enclosed into the cube. So, it’s a great epic battle at the end. And you play Poseidon, god of the sea. Tell us about your character’s role in the film. When you first meet Poseidon, he is kind of like the favorite father to all the other younger gods, and he is Zeus’ brother. So, he kind of goes tit for tat with “yes, Zeus you are the king of the heavens, but I am your second in command in a way, or I am your brother, and you can tell me so much, but when you push it, I’m gonna rebel a little bit.” So you see in the movie that Ares and Athena come to me, and they give me their support if I want to intervene and help out the humans in a little way, and so, I do it, and I have fun doing it. So, what did you most love about making this film? I loved the story. I loved the script. I love everything that the writers did with it. It’s very new and original, and it’s not really coming off a book or a comic book or a story or a movie that’s already been done before. It’s an original script. It’s really great to be a part of something where the

audience has no idea of what’s going to happen because they haven’t seen the movie already or read the book already. And for my character, I love Greek mythology, and I love Poseidon. I grew up doing reports on Poseidon, and it’s just really cool that I’m an actor now, and I can play him. One of your co-stars in the film is Henry Cavill, who is just an amazing actor and star of The Tudors television series. What was it like working with him and the rest of the cast of the film? Henry’s great. It was really cool. I’ve been a big fan of his. I’ve watched The Tudors forever, and he’s the perfect Theseus for this movie. I didn’t really have too many scenes with him, but when I got time to hang out with him off set it was just a big family. I really miss the [cast from the] movie. I loved Montreal. Loved the weather, the cast and crew, directors and producers. This has been my favorite movie to work on, and it’s because of all that.

You can check out Immortals this weekend when the film opens nationwide. It is rated R for sequences of strong bloody violence, and a scene of sexuality.

Even Greek gods need a hero sometimes! That’s the premise of the new action drama Immortals starring Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz and Henry Cavill, from the hit Showtime series The Tudors, in the heroic role of Theseus, a mortal man who is chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the ruthless King Hyperion (Rourke). The king is a Titan who is on a rampage across Greece to obtain the Epirus Bow, a weapon that can destroy humanity. Lutz, who skyrocketed to international fame as Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movie series, plays Poseidon, the brother of Zeus. I caught up with the Hollywood heartthrob to talk about playing one of his childhood heroes and feeling the love on the set of this epic film.

Every now and then it’s important to be catapulted back into reality. The Anne Buford documentary ELEVATE did just that. The journey of four young men – Aziz, Dethie, Byago, and Assane – from their homeland of Senegal to the prep academies of the United States. The extreme poverty of the capital city of Dakar was a stark reminder of the isolated and air-conditioned bubble that we live in inside the U.S. Watching the kids of the SEEDS academy (founded by former Dallas Mavericks scout Amadou Gallo Fall), a program that gives Senegalese boys a place to study and train relentlessly with the hope that basketball will create a way out of impoverishment and provide a path to an American education and perhaps even the NBA, work tirelessly to achieve the hope of going to an American school was almost emotionally exhausting. I couldn’t help but think, what about those without a jump shot? Where was their hope? Seeing these young men grow exponentially in this gutwrenching modern epic was a cinematic experience that I may never forget. I found myself completely invested in their success, their struggles. They travel more than half a world away with their dreams carefully packed away and prepared to earn everything that they get. Assance for instance, finds himself in Connecticut at prestigious South Kent, a far cry from his native Dakar – enough to provide anyone with a debilitating bout of culture shock. On top of expectations to excel in the classroom and on the court they also must combat every preconceived stereotype of life in Africa from their American classmates without the help of allies or family. Though they faced some very adult situations and conquered some very grown up odds, I had to remember that these four are just kids; mere children with some very heavy responsibilities on their shoulders. When lesser men would have crumbled these boys stood resolute. As director Anne Buford said, “There is no classic story, no Cinderella story.” You see, Cinderella earned nothing, she achieved by having a fairy godmother drop her dreams into her lap. Not so for this Senegal Four, brothers in basketball who know all to well… opportunity is earned.

sonal in Vegas at the Hard Rock during the Mer de Noms tour and was amazed that I was so inspired by Maynard’s music with APC like I had been for years by TOOL. Pucsifer is MJK’s most recent venture and is best described as a social collective. Keenan describes Puscifer as “simply a playground for the various voices in my head, [...] a space with no clear or discernible goals, [...] where my Id, ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes.” Perferct Maynard. It has been said in Hollywood that if he wanted to act he would win an Oscar and I am not going to argue that. In addition to his music career, he has performed improvisational stand-up comedy and ventured into acting. He is the current owner of Merkin Vineyards and the associated winery, Caduceus Cellars, and has part ownership of Stronghold Vineyards, all located in Arizona, where he lives. Among other business ventures, he is a partner in the Los Angeles restaurant Cobras & Matadors, and owns a produce market and an organic market in Cornville, Arizona, the latter featuring a tasting room for his wines, as well as, a food court. All that said, he will make time for an intimate evening with nuts like me at the Majestic Theater December 3.

By Jesse Whitman jwhitman00@gmail.com

So, I have had my head planted deep within my sports butt lately and have not allowed myself much time for some of my other passions in life. I am going to get that chance however December 3rd at the Majestic Theater as I will be taking in the VIP treatment when Maynard James Keenan’s newest project Puscifer rolls through town. That also gives me a chance to rant a bit about Maynard who is one of my deepest inspirations in anything I try to do creatively. Maynard James Keenan, born James Herbert Keenan April 17th 1964 is an American rock singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, winemaker, and actor. Originally from Ohio, Keenan spent his high school and college years in Michigan. After serving in the Army in the early 1980s, he attended Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1988 to pursue a career in interior design and set construction. He formed the band Tool with Adam Jones shortly thereafter. I first saw TOOL in Austin shortly after the Undertow CD was released and the song “Sober” had become popular on MTV. This was back when they aired videos. Painted head to toe in red body paint and wearing a pair of devil horns, red speedo and a forked tail, Maynard patrolled a small corner of the stage to belt out his dark sometimes-seedy lyrics while contorting his body like it had no spine. This dude was out there and I was hooked. That was 20 years ago and there isn’t enough room in this publication for any type of bio on Maynard and all his work so I am trying to hit the highlights and sprinkle in some obscure wisdom. Of course, Maynard is best known for his work as the frontman for the Heavy Alternative band TOOL which has produced five albums and won two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance in 1998 and 2001. During Tool’s post-Ænima hiatus to deal with their legal issues, Keenan began working with Billy Howerdel, Tool’s guitar tech through the Ænima tour, on a different project. The group they formed, A Perfect Circle, began performing in 1999 and released its first album Mer de Noms in 2000. I had the pleasure of seeing them up close and in per-

By Tommy Smith tsmith@blitzweekly.com

We have been concocting mind-altering substances since the beginning of human civilization. Indeed, there is evidence that cavemen attempted to make a sort of proto-whiskey. Recently unearthed cave paintings illustrate the crude method in which our distant ancestors attempted to ferment and distill mastodon brains. Then, in a ritual thought to increase virility and ensure a good hunt, they would engage in a ceremonial nasal enema, intoxicating each other by blowing the mastodon distillate up their noses. So, as fighting saber-toothed tigers and scavenging for berries was very stressful then, so it is now in the current state of world affairs. In many ways humans are still fighting for survival, only now the threats are not from prowling carnivores, but from marauding malignancies lurking in our own bodies. In the United States, 1 in 3 people are diagnosed with cancer every year, and rates of people with anxiety-related disorders are even higher. In other words, we humans are a mess and need all the help we can get, which is perhaps why today top researchers have been looking into the possible medicinal powers of illegal drugs: Ecstasy Long thought to be merely a remedy for the incessant drone of house music, recent research suggests that MDMA isn’t just for ravers in tutus and glow-inthe-dark glitter, but has the potential to cure cancer. In a 2006 experiment, the drug was shown to kill up to 100 percent of cancer cells in trials. However, the dosage was also lethal to 100 percent of the other cells in the body...essentially fatal to humans. Not willing to be dissuaded from the potential of MDMA, scientists reformulated the discobiscuits and the result was a low dose roll that can completely eradicate cancer cells found in leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Lead researcher Dr. John Gordon from the University of Birmingham says the drug works by being attracted to the fat

in the cancer cells. While the study is promising, Ecstasy for cancer treatment is still at least a decade away, as clinical trials are needed to ensure safety and effectiveness for human use. Marijuana Cannabis a.k.a weed has long been known to have great results in pain management, which has led to the use of medical marijuana in California. It also has been shown to help chemotherapy patients with nausea and loss of appetite. It can also dramatically reduce the complications caused from glaucoma. However, you must be careful with this one because it can confuse you into thinking Moon Pies and late night trips to Waffle House are good ideas, which could lead to other health complications. Psychedelics Recent studies have found that LSD and magic mushrooms can help treat cluster headaches, anorexia, and other destructive behavior caused from a variety of anxietyrelated disorders. In the 1970s, medical research of LSD was banned because of the fear it could cause mental illness. However, many users claim the drug has stopped them from destructive behavior. Joyce Middleton, 35, a university professor, takes LSD twice a year, which she says has prevented her from heavy drinking and smoking. She claims the drug has helped her feel comfortable in her own skin so she doesn’t have to resort to alcohol to ease anxiety. She hasn’t has a drink since 1995. Although LSD is considered highly dangerous and having no medical research value under the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act, some researchers have published studies that challenge such claims. In fact, psychiatrist Dr. John Halpernof of Harvard Medical School found in a recent study that all 53 people who suffered from cluster headaches had significant relief from the use of LSD or magic mushrooms.

2011 Land Rover LR4:

Engine Type 5.0L V eight-cylinder DOHC

Disco Is Not Dead! DNA testing of the new Land Rover LR4 would reveal that there is still a good bit of Big Blue Oval pulsing through its veins. The brand’s latest midsize SUV may receive corporate mail from an Indian postmark but development of the LR4 in current form began back when Dearborn, Michigan was a frequent destination for Land Rover hierarchy. The new LR4, as with its predecessor LR3, is a US-market designation. The platform is known globally (and previously here) as the Discovery Series, or Disco for short. And thanks to Ford, Disco is not dead! (Forgive me, I have been waiting years to work that into an article.) Yes, the new LR4 with its all-new powertrain and interior and chassis refinements is

the most stunning and powerful midsizer for the brand yet. At the heart of the vehicle is another application of the great new 5.0-liter V-8 engine whose siblings are found in the likes of Mustang GT, Ford F-150 and even the new Jaguar XJL we tested recently. For LR4 the five-point-OH cranks out 375hp and 375 lb. ft. of torque, enough to more than get this big box out of its own way. Mated to a slick six-speed automatic gearbox with CommandShift technology the new Rover offers very spirited driving especially in sport mode. No, this ride won’t be turning laps at Laguna Seca but perhaps hold its own a bit south of there at Baja. While offering a most enjoyable and comfortable onroad experience, Land Rover vehicles live for the moment the pavement ends. This

Rover, like its stablemates, features the Terrain Response System where the driver simply points the arrow on a knob in the center console to a symbol that looks like what is under the tires and it’s go time. No matter what harsh elements are being experienced outside the interior of the LR4 bathes its occupants in luxury and comfort along with the latest technology. An awesome audio system complements a most capable navigation unit and the indash display can be set to show the vehicles offroad status at all times. Blind spot issues found in most SUVs are taken care of thanks to rearview camera (with optional 360-degree camera sight around the vehicle available) and rear park distance control. Land Rover styling is truly unique and quite apparent in

While some may find its overly-boxy dimensions a bit polarizing the Discovery (LR) series has found quite a few fans globally. OK, fuel economy is the biggest complaint in this rig as 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway (on good days) as rather appalling for this segment especially given the new powertrain and what it offers

in other applications but pushing a large refrigerator box down the road is not going to win any coefficient-of-drag competitions. Pricing for the new LR4 in HSE trim begins at $47,650 with our tester coming in at just under 53 grand. Driving the new Land Rover LR4 certainly proves that ‘Disco’ is not dead.

A Family Reunion, in Heaven The Chicago Tribune reported October 28, 2011, an auto accident on the Indiana Toll Road near South Bend killed a 21-year-old mother, her two sons, ages 6 and 8, a 52-year-old male relative, his 15-year-old son, a 26-year-old female relative, and her 8-year-old daughter. Where was this family of seven going when they were killed? To a family funeral. Lucky, Lucky, Lucky Lotto Lady From Bishop, Texas, July 13, 2010, the Associated Press reported former college professor Joan Ginthe, age 63, was possibly the luckiest lotto winner in all recorded history. Beginning in 1993, she split an $11 million lotto jackpot. In 2006, a scratch-off won her $2 million. In 2008, another scratch-off won her $3 million and, in June 2010, a $50 scratch-off won her $10 million, for a grand total of $21 million. (Mathematicians say the odds of one person being this lucky are about 1 in 18,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.)

The CLOSER

Badger Porter Brewed by: Sand Creek Brewing Company ABV: 5.00% Badger Porter pours as a slightly cloudy chestnut brown with a light khaki head. Like many porters the aroma is mild. The soft flavor makes it very drinkable. There is a distinct sweetness though blended with a mild roast. Not too heavy on the hops. Overall a pretty decent beer for what it is. Definitely brewed for the everyday drinker.

BLITZ salutes the movers, the shakers, the fearless, and the incredible that DFW has to offer. You may not have heard of them yet - but you will.

Who would round out a taste-testing panel that included Chuck Norris, Troy Aikman, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and Betty White? Gordon Ramsey. He keeps it real. Strangest thing you own? A food truck. Embarrassing song hiding in your iPod? [Bursts into song] I like to move it move it…. What would be your commencement speech to the 2012 graduating class of Harvard? It’s all good and take it easy.

What are some of hurdles involved with the mobile food business? Lack of uniform guidelines from city to city is a continuing struggle and getting into the business initially the problem was resources.

Finish this sentence: If every man had a So Cal taco… The world would be a whole lot more laid back place.

What made you take So Cal Tacos on the road? My wife and I had worked on a brick and mortar store, but ran into some problems related to capital and me getting sick with cancer. After making it through that we saw the food truck thing blowing up and decided to take the So Cal recipe and bring it to the people.

There is only one person I want to see on the presidential ticket right now and it is not any of the current Republican candidates. The person I want to run doesn’t seem to have an actual name. I had to type in such things as “Dos Equis Commercial” on the Internet to find out who this mysterious actor is in much the same way I would find out who the actresses are who play Flo on those Progressive ads or the scolding mother on those AT&T rollover minutes commercials. Of course, it’s not actor Jonathan Goldsmith, who has been seen on those clever humorous Dos Equis ads boasting that heavy beard and deep thick accent who I want to see run for president. The larger-than-life character Goldsmith plays known as “The Most Interesting Man In the World” is whom I want on that short list. I found a website called themostinterestingmanintheworld.net, where you can watch and read all the latest ads and memorable lines which are uttered by frontline actor/narrator Will Lyman.

Visit us online at www.Blitzweekly.com

“I have been an actor for many years and I’ve never had the accolades this wonderful campaign has brought to me so I feel very blessed,” said Goldsmith of his success. “Very lucky. You know I am not 33 anymore.” Kids apparently even want to be “The Most Interesting Man” when they grow up, Goldsmith told the reporter. “I was sitting in a little restaurant the other day and a fellow came over and he said ‘You’re the guy’ and I said ‘yes’ and said he asked his 7-year-old son “what do you want to do when you grow up?” Goldsmith said. “He (the 7-year-old) said ‘I want to be The Most Interesting Man in the World.’ Made me feel good.” Quite frankly, I’d have no problems asking such a person for directions, knowing that I’d never get lost and would arrive five minutes early. As fed up as I am getting with both the Republican and Democratic parties, perhaps “The Most Interesting Man” should run as an independent. I have always believed there now needs to be a third party as the two current ones in power are not doing the country much good. Even “The Most Interesting Man” doesn’t

seem to think much of the two-party system. “The after party is the one you want to attend,” he says. This country seriously needs a president where Americans hang on to his every word -- “Even the prepositions.” Our next president should be a man “who lives vicariously through himself” and whose reputation expands “faster than the universe.” Perhaps “The Most Interesting Man” could make America great again where other countries around the world list him as their emergency contact number. We need a leader other countries will see as “a lover, not a fighter” but also a fighter so our adversaries won’t get any ideas. Given I am on the subject of repeating various Dos Equis one-liners, allow me to come up with one further comment using Will Lyman’s voice. Perhaps this can be used as “The Most Interesting Man’s” presidential campaign slogan. “If asked by reporters why he’s failed to create more jobs as president, you will never hear him say, ‘I blame Bush.’” Stay thirsty, my fellow Americans.

A Time to Reflect as Veterans Day Approaches Albert Caruso is my great uncle – my grandmother’s brother – and one of two brothers who served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was the radio operator and gunner on a B-24 Liberator. On December 3, 1943 his crew completed a solo mission attack on an enemy destroyer convoy. They reported hitting their targets and were returning to base in New Guinea. Radio transmission indicated an arrival time of just after midnight. Following radio transmissions indicated they should have been over the airfield but could not see runway lights. His last radio transmission was at 1:35 am. Their bodies and the plane were never recovered. The 10 man crew was reported MIA and declared deceased in January 1946. My uncle was 25 years old. I was born 29 years to the day of my uncle’s death and carry his name. I always considered him a hero: part of the last crusade, the generation that freed Europe, defeated the Nazi’s and saved American Democracy. I was sad I never knew him, and for the loss his family felt, yet in my mind he died with the romanticism of a war movie. I felt I honored him in this way and took great pride in his heroism. Recently I learned to respect and honor him from a new perspective. In 2000, three Papua New Guineans found a plane while hunting in the jungle. They contacted the US military base, but were unable to locate the site again. It took the US Military four years to locate the wreckage again. They positively identified the aircraft and most of the crewmembers as my uncle’s plane. This information was released to the families in 2006. In August all 10 crewmembers were buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The ceremony was amazing to witness, and the active Army personnel who took park in the ceremony treated all the families with a reverence and empathy only an active soldier serving during the reality of war could display. South Pacific at the same time as his brother was presented with his brother’s flag. My grandmother passed away in 1995. I originally attended the ceremony to pay Uncle Albert my respect and a chance to share the closure and pride with the rest of my family. The ceremony took on a different perspective when the administering Colonel spoke to the families. Divulging the now declassified events of December 3 and 4, 1943. My past image of the flight that had seemed so much like the black and white video footage of South Pacific dogfights were replaced by the reality the crew faced. The plane was off course. Navigation in WWII consisted of calculating airspeed and heading. Considering the distance they were traveling, a slight variation in wind or miscalculation would have them grossly off course. With only the jungle and sea below, their only safe landing was the airfield. Parachuting from this height could land them in the middle of the ocean, and dropping altitude to view the terrain would put the plane at risk to the mountains of New Guinea. This would have been unspoken but apparent to the crew. And for the first time I cried at my uncle’s death. Not for the loss of his life, but for his fear – fear of living, fear of dying. In my tears I could see the crew passing commands and responses in silent calm against the rumble of engines slowly draining their hope. Their anger, frustration and despair going from the jubilation of a successful mission to the realization that their fate would not be determined by skill, or right and wrong but the impartial burn of fuel. In that I gained a new perspective of heroism. Follow blitz weekly on twitter and facebook
