By jus chris patterson - cpatterson@blitzweekly.com hange appears to be the only constant in life. Our lives are relentlessly evolving on a moment-to-moment basis – think about it for a minute. Not too long ago the words Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest were nonsensical and most importantly nonexistent. 3G was fast enough and you probably weren’t the only person in your neighborhood with a home phone. The good old days; back when you went outside found a girl you liked hit her over the head with an oddly shaped, over-sized stick and dragged her back to the cave (now I suppose you have to text her first). Resisting change – like the impending robot apocalypse – is futile. So when our mechanical overlords here at the offices instructed us to dismantle the Blitz Weekly that you know and love and rebuild a bigger, better, and more badass monthly publication of course we revolted. Many were lost in the Revolution of Fall/Winter 2012 and when the smoke cleared the robots had laid waste to most of us and the few that remained would now be forced to put together a magazine with groundbreaking sports analysis, pages and pages of extremely gorgeous women (now we’ve got binders full of ‘em...thanks Mitt), insiders’ guides to the movies, VIP access to the best restaurants, and exclusive interviews with the brightest stars – truly loathsome work. Secretly when our digital dictators are preoccupied watching re-runs of The Big Bang Theory (their affinity for Sheldon is positively intriguing) we are building an Iron Man suit to escape, but until it’s complete I suppose we have to keep making their cooler and slightly more entertaining BLITZ. And when we don’t work fast enough one of our captors that looks

a lot like a certain Sith lord does the “Vaderchoke” on us. Poor Fred in accounting will never be the same again. More hot girls! They yell at us. More football, more Mavs, more gadgets! Sometimes they even sing our orders to us like an electronically evil Les Miserables. We have become like a sweatshop of men’s magazine greatness. Sure, it’s not like you guys care. You get your innovative and future award-winning magazine. We get the gruel that they fed Oliver Twist and berated by Prius-sized toasters with poor dispositions. My team and I expect you to turn a blind eye to our plight as you’re checking out Emma Stones legs, daydreaming of watching Rambo with Katrina Hill and trying to decide which Harbaugh brother you want to win the Super Bowl. We know that you will be too busy reading about how to actually get laid on Valentine’s night or how to pin someone into submission like UFC Champ José Aldo (hopefully not on Valentine’s night) to remember your old pals at publication formally known as the Blitz Weekly. You selfish bastards. Just remember this when you are thumbing through the new issue, reading the incrediblyinteresting articles, ogling the unbelievably sexy women, and drooling over every friggin’ awesome page, somewhere in a basement in Plano there are seven guys and three girls being tasered by some really mean douchebag robots to make it happen. But in the grand scheme of things I guess it’s not so bad…they let us check our Facebook page.

faking it for fame By Keysha Hogan - @TheKeysha

ommit this to memory: It’s not the crime, it’s the cover up. People have the capacity to forgive, ridicule and forget if given the chance. We’ve all made mistakes both big and small, so it’s easy for us to find the humanity in others when they fail on a public stage. But, when an individual has the chance to course correct and instead chooses to continue with lies and deception, the public can turn callus and unsympathetic in no time at all. For example, take our recent poster boys: Lance Armstrong and Manti Te’o. After decades of denials, Armstrong finally admitted what we all suspected. He used various methods to cheat his way to the top. During the interview with Oprah, it was easy to see how a young athlete could get pulled into an international sport with a long and tainted

actions, poor Manti Te’o just seemed like poor Marsha Brady explaining how George Glass was her neato new boyfriend. When all of this started Te’o was 19 years old, and at that age entire relationships can play out over social media without anyone batting an eye. Honestly, in the early days of AOL discs how many of us were lulled into bogus feelings because some creepy guy knew how to pull at our teenage heart strings? Te’o bravely played all season, in spite of his grief over the death of his faux-girlfriend (whose funeral he didn’t attend!). But when his soulmate placed a phone call to him from beyond the grave, he said he was angry and confused but continued forward with the relationship. Somewhere in his mind the words ‘hoax,’ or ‘scam’ must have surfaced. Once he learned the truth or at least a version of the events that made

history. However, any mercy you felt quickly evaporated after the great and powerful Oprah started reading off the ways in which Armstrong bullied and sued his former teammates and friends. He responded by justifying his behavior: “I was just on the attack, Oprah. Territory being threatened, team being threatened, reputation being threatened. I’m going to attack.” That’s right the awful, terrible threat that Armstrong had to defend himself against was the truth. So instead of coming clean and allowing the truth to put him into a submission hold, Armstrong launched legal warfare on his colleagues. While Armstrong was obviously malicious in his

more sense, he should have stopped speaking publically about the entire situation. No one blames a young kid for getting sucked into a scam, but they will blame him for repeating it again and again and earning sympathy as his national profile rose. And people can find forgiveness when someone gets lost in the world of cheating and drugs but turns their profits into charitable dollars. But when you enter into the business of destroying the lives of people you once worked with, or when you turn from the victim to into a perpetrator in your own hoax, expect an apathetic public to judge harshly.

Thank you jerry! By jan hubbard - comments@blitzweekly.com

A few years ago, I was at a retirement party for a local sports columnist, who had spent more than a fair amount of time ripping Jerry Jones. Obviously there were columns of praise, too, but there were times the writer had been tough on Jerry. Despite that, Jones – who has one of the thickest skins of any sports figure I have covered – attended the event. That’s Jerry. Say what you want about him, be nasty, be unfair and he’ll still smile at you and act like nothing ever happened. Another veteran columnist, who had also spent time bashing Jones, stood up to pay tribute to the retiring writer and said of Jones: “We’d like to personally thank Jerry for making our careers the last 20 years.” Along with everyone else, Jerry laughed.

when Jones said that may change but that Garrett was OK with it, that was exactly the opposite of what Garrett had said. By the time Jerry was dropping hints that offensive line coach and former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan would call plays, he had already hired a new defensive coordinator. And then during the week, a new special teams coach was added. So thus far, Jerry has made changes on offense, defense and special teams. As always, most of Jerry’s moves were blasted by the media but it is kind of interesting to take an objective view. The one thing I believe Jerry critics are missing is his intense desire to win. I really believe there is no one in the Cowboys organization, no fan, no columnist, no radio talk Jerry is still running the show Darryl Briggs I thought about that show host, no TV recently because when the Cowboys staff went announcer who wants the Cowboys to win more to the Senior Bowl, how many headlines did than Jerry. ice breakers 2012-2013 dallas stars season preview A

fter 119 miserable days, the NHL lockout finally ended allowing your Dallas Stars to take the ice for the first time in 2013. Though it is a shortened season with only 48 games, it is something rather than nothing for hockey fans. The Stars will be looking to make the playoffs for the first time in five years and they will try to accomplish this with a revamped roster. The Stars head into the shortened season with some new faces on the roster after a busy offseason of transactions. They signed two 40-year-old wingers, Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney to improve the scoring on the team. They also signed defensemen Aaron Rome away from the Vancouver Canucks to add toughness on the blue line. They traded fanfavorite Steve Ott and defenseman Adam Pardy to the Buffalo Sabres in return for center Derek Roy to anchor the second line. If there was a silver lining to the lockout, it was that it allowed Roy to completely recover from shoulder surgery he had back in July. If the season had started on time, there was a good chance he would have missed the first few months of the season. The Stars also traded Mike Ribeiro to the Washington Capitals in exchange for center Cody Eakin and a second round pick. With these moves, it was clear the Stars wanted a change of scenery after failing to make the playoffs again. The Stars also want to invest in their farm

system by bringing up some young prospects that they feel are ready to contribute. Prospects like defensemen Brenden Dillon and Jordie Benn, Jamie’s older brother, as well as forwards Reilly Smith and Ryan Garbutt. With enough confidence in the defensive group, the Stars decided to trade Mark Fistric to the Edmonton Oilers for a third round pick. There will be some growing pains, but that is a part of the process when developing young talent. Team captain Brenden Morrow is looking to battle back from some injuries he has had to deal with to his neck, shoulder and back that sidelined him for most of last season. He is hoping with extra time off thanks to the lockout will allow him to be more effective this season. On whether he is completely 100 percent healthy, Morrow does not know for sure until he hits the ice playing. ”Well, the problem is that until you go out there, you don’t know. I think I’m at a good place, and I think the extra time to work on things like spin class and Pilates has to help, but you have to get out there and play,” Morrow said according to dallasnews.com. General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk believes with the recent moves he has made, that the team can significantly improve especially on the top two lines. “I think clearly in our top players. Ray Whitney finished 13th in the league in scoring, and you can already see the type of

aldo vs. edgar

By brian beard – comments@blitzweekly.com Jose “Junior” Aldo (21-1-0) vs. Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (14-3-1): What a great fight this will be! Edgar is making the drop from 155 to 145 and gets an immediate title shot. Considering he is the former 155lb UFC World Champion and has beaten the likes of BJ Penn twice I’d say it is well deserved. Aldo, the champ, is an absolute monster at 145 and this will be no easy task for Edgar. Both have outstanding stand up with Edgar possibly being the better boxer and Aldo the better kick boxer. I give the wresting edge to Edgar and the submissions to Aldo, but don’t look for this fight to go to the ground. We will be watching two guys that are very elusive trying to hunt each other down and it will be very entertaining. I look for the first round to be a feeling out round where the fighters don’t engage too much and try to find their range. The second round should liven up and we will see a very technical game of cat and mouse. I am very interested to see how Edgar does at 145 as I think he would absolutely dominate the division if it weren’t for Aldo. My prediction: I think Aldo will win a very technical decision and both fighters will look like they could go five more rounds.

Alistair “The Reem” Overeem (36-11-1) vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (17-4-0): Will we see the anabolic freak show Overeem for this fight? He was busted for failing a drug test before his last fight in April of ’12 and who knows how much of a difference being clean will make. I am going to guess a lot. Silva is a beast but has shown to have a little bit of a soft spot on the chin. Both guys have great power and will be ready to bang. I think we will see a lesser version of the Reem as he should be drug free for this one. He also hasn’t fought in over a year so ring rust could play a factor as well. Both are pretty well rounded with Overeem holding the striking advantage. I would give the ground game a slight edge for Silva. When you are dealing with guys this big and skilled, anything goes. One shot is all it takes. My prediction: I look for Overeem to win this one but he will not look the same as he did when he fought big Cock Chestner in 2011. Overeem by decision.

Rashad “Suga” Evans (22-2-1) vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (20-5-0): Why does it feel like the game has passed both of these awesome veterans by? They just don’t seem relevant like they used to and I’m not sure why. Especially Rashad Evans. This dude is a BEAST and only has two losses in a 25 fight professional career. Nog on the other hand is a legend that I believe is on his way out. Unfortunately he has become a gate keeper, which happens to all of the greats eventually. I don’t put Evans in that boat just yet. Nog is still extremely dangerous but tends to struggle with good wrestlers as of late. He has awesome Jiu Jistu but Evans has awesome Jiu Jitsu defense and awesome wrestling. Nog is a pretty technical boxer where as Evans is very fast and explosive with his strikes. My prediction: I look for this to be a war but I look for Evans to win definitively. Evans via TKO late in the second round.

Jon Fitch (27-4-1) vs. Demian Maia (174-0): This is a very interesting matchup that will pit an expert wrestler against an expert submission fighter. Maia is one of the best submission fighters in the UFC and the world and has been improving his stand up game with every fight. Fitch is a scrappy wrestler with good enough stand up to push the fight where he wants it, into the cage and onto the ground. I give the striking advantage to Fitch. He also has a great submission game and awesome submission defense. I look for that to be the difference here. The first round will consist of ugly stand up with Maia trying to get the fight to the ground, unsuccessfully. My prediction: The fight will eventually go to the ground where Fitch will fend off submissions from Maia and eventually pound out a decision. For those of you that hate the ground fighting tune out for this fight, but it should be great!

rousey vs. carmouche

By stephen kelley – stephenkelley@me.com

R

ousey vs. Carmouche will be the 157th installment of the Ultimate Fighting Championship shown on February 23, 2013. The fights will be held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey (6-0-0) vs. Liz “ Girlrilla” Carmouche (6-2-0) This fight will be ground breaking for the UFC and for Dana White. Rousey vs. Carmouche will be the first women’s bout in UFC history. This contest has tons of hype following the two ladies. Many say if Rousey does not win the women’s division she will be quickly swept out the door. Rousey is an attractive young face that White is putting his chips behind it seems. Rousey is a former Judo Olympic medalist that currently holds the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship facing Liz Carmouche, UFC’s first openly gay competitor. Liz Carmouche is proficient in Kenpo and BJJ. This fight looks like it’s set for Rousey to rout Carmouche to launch the Women’s division in the UFC but Rousey can’t underestimate Carmouche. Ultimately this fight is like your high school homecoming and your coach never schedules a loss for homecoming and White can’t take a loss here. My prediction: Rousey third round submission. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (18-3-0) vs. Dan “Hendo” Henderson (29-8-0) After both of these competitors tenure in both Pride and UFC, I really can’t believe this is the first time these fighters are meeting. I believe Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida will be the best fight on the card. Henderson is on a hot streak of 4-1 in his last five fights and only one of those wins going to decision, all others were K.O. or T.K.O. by punches. Machida has only won two of his last five bouts, with one with an over-the-hill Randy Couture and Ryan Bader. I believe Machida will come to this fit and ready for action. This fight will be very fast paced, tons of punches thrown and absorbed. This fight will take me back to the old PRIDE days where Henderson stays in the pocket and throws graveyard right hands and Machida will throw huge karate kid combinations. My prediction: Henderson continues his roll, three rounds - unanimous decision. Uriah “The California Kid” Faber (26-60) vs. Ivan “The Pride of El Salvador” Menjivar (25-9-0) Uriah is the WEC “Golden Boy” but his move to the UFC has been less than luster. Uriah has gone back in forth with wins and losses but always choking when the lights are brightest

during interim Championships and the outright Bantamweight championship. This fight against Menjivar I feel will give Uriah the base to which he can rebuild his win column again. Menjivar fighting out of El Salvador has big wins in which he displays his amazing BJJ with ten of his 25 wins ending in submissions. Menjivar fights for the Tristar gym who trains with the likes of Georges St-Pierre, Kenny Florian, and Rory MacDonald so he is in great company. This fight will be quick paced with appendages flaying all over the place as if they threw two chimps in a cage to fight over a bushel of bananas. My Prediction: Uriah Faber unanimous decision. Josh “Kos” Koscheck (19-6-0) vs. Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler (18-9-0) The first bout in the Pay-Per-View should be an exciting one and this has that appeal…in 2009. I feel Robbie Lawler is on his last string and Josh Koscheck is always a bridesmaid never a bride. The knockout power that Lawler used to possess is no longer there. With losses to Lakrin, Kennedy and Souza in Strikeforce, I feel Lawler is on his way out and just giving Koscheck another name to put under the belt. Koscheck has been one of my favorites with his no holds barred trash talk but when you have one of the best pound for pound fighters in your division in St-Pierre you’re just not going to reach the mountain top for a long time. I see Koscheck using his amazing amateur NCAA division one wrestling background to slam Lawler time and time again. My Prediction: Koscheck in the second round T.K.O. Punches.

By Geoff Case - gcase@blitzweekly.com

which players should the mavs target to improve their roster? I’ve composed a list of the top targets the Mavs could be angling for not only before the trade deadline but in the offseason as well. There is going to be a lot of players with ability available and after the latest CBA it’s a whole new ballgame. Rudy Gay – While this might not be the franchise saving move Mavs fans are so desperately craving right now, it does help them get younger with a talented player. Rudy Gay is good but he’s not Top 10 good. He’s not a franchise player but he’s right under that line. With the new CBA penalties coming soon with heavier consequence, contracts like Gay’s ($18 to $20 million per season) are simply poison that few teams can afford to swallow and survive. Verdict: Not likely, the Mavs stance has been to maximize every dollar under the new salary cap. It would make no sense to spend max

Gregg Case

money on a player of Gay’s ability. Dwight Howard – This is the target that will surely get the talking heads on sports shows. If the 2011 team taught us anything, it’s that an athletic defensive center is the perfect complement to Dirk Nowitizki. The Lakers star has not signed an extension with the team and has voiced his frustrations with the management and roster. He has simply not looked like the once in a lifetime talent since he donned the Lakers uniform after back surgery last offseason. He looks stiff and slow and teams get blitzed

are murdering the Lakers on the inside this season. Verdict: Absolutely, if the Mavs have a chance to sign Howard this offseason they will try to do so. Even though he hasn’t looked like the same player since the surgery, the chance that he bounces back and becomes the best center for the next decade is too much to pass up. DeMarcus Cousins – We’ve all seen the news feeds coming out of Sacramento – Cousins’ arguments with coaches, teammates and league officials. Multiple suspensions and inconsistent effort on the court are the only reason he is available. However, this is a 22-year-old center with immense talent still on his rookie-scale contract. This is a very affordable player with the talent to be one of the top couple of players in the entire NBA who is still years from reaching his prime. The Kings would no doubt attach a few horrible contracts to Cousins (i.e. Marcus Thorton) but a team like the Mavs could roll throughout the length of those with an eye on the future. Verdict: Yes, the Mavs and a plethora of other teams would love to take a wavier on Cousins. There is another factor in Cousins’ fate. The Kings are also dealing with a change of ownership process that likely puts all of their dealings on hold, especially as future ownership and key holdings are in some level of doubt. My Top Target before the trade deadline: Eric Bledsoe - Point guard is one of the biggest needs for this Mavs roster. Bledsoe is a very gifted young player who has a cheap rookie contract. In games he’s played at least 25 minutes this season, Bledsoe is averaging: 14.5 points, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals, 1.2 blocks, 46.5 field-goal percentage, 1.3 turnovers and has a PER of 19.2 this season. The problem is that Chris Paul has yet to resign with the Clippers this season and he’s their best back-up plan if Paul walks. Verdict: Yes, the Mavs should explore every option at point guard when it comes to trade, free agency and the draft. They simply do not have a NBA level starting point guard anywhere on the roster. While Bledsoe may be a long shot depending on Paul’s future, the Mavs need help at that position.

How do you feel about that? Vince Carter: I feel pretty good for what it is. You know it’s not enough. I’ve got to help set the tone for the team. Blitz: The Mavericks have been winning most of their games recently, but even in the losses they’ve played close. This team does not quit… VC: That’s what it’s all about. That’s what I am trying to bring to the table. The energy, it’s important. Not just the scoring, even though that’s important; but just going after it. Just continuing to play regardless of the score. Let’s go out and play. Play for pride. Play for what’s on your jersey and see what happens. Instead of always looking at the score when the other team makes a basket because I think in your mind and in particular the young guys you’ll end up trying to do too much. You’ve Got Questions, We’ve Got Answers By bruce cameron - comments@blitzweekly.com Keselowski/Penske to Ford Brad Keslowski marked a huge triumph, beating five-time champion Jimmie Johnson for the Sprint Cup championship last year. Penske Racing will now embark on their next greatest challenges, adjusting to a new car and new personnel. Penske has switched manufacturers, moving from Dodge to Ford. This is Keselowski’s first time ever driving a Ford. The Ford lineup also includes Roush Fenway and Richard Petty Motorsports. Kenseth to Gibbs For the past decade, 2003 champion Matt Kenseth has been a consistent winner and frequent title contender for Roush. Now he will see if he can maintain that excellence with Gibbs replacing the struggling young Joey Logano. Kenseth, who had 24 career victories at Roush, won three races in each of the past two seasons — including last year’s Daytona 500 — and made the Chase the past three years.

Danica runs a full schedule After three agonizing years in the Nationwide Series, Danica Patrick will run her first full Sprint Cup schedule in 2013, driving the No. 10 car for Stewart-Haas. This is a do-over and she has plenty to prove. Time will tell if she’s graduated into the Cup too quickly. After minimal success in the Nationwide Series, Patrick struggled in her first 10 Cup races last year, finishing 28th or worse, seven times, and finishing on the lead lap only once. Patrick will be paired with Gibson and that should be encouraging since she scored her best Cup finishes with the veteran crew chief. Her biggest challenge, though, may be just qualifying for races. Under NASCAR’s new qualifying rules, she may have to make most races on speed, which means she will have to get up to speed quickly — which has been a weakness so far.

Kurt Busch gets yet another fresh start The past two years have been nothing short of failed mental meltdowns for Kurt Busch. After struggling in the Chase in 2010 and 2011 and losing control of his emotions in 2011, he was released by Penske at the end of the season. If that wasn’t bad enough, 2012 was quite the fail. He spent most of the year with the very smallPhoenix Racing Team, where he scored just two top-10 finishes and fell to 26th in points. He also continued to struggle to control his temper. He was placed on probation for an altercation with Newman’s team early in the year and then was suspended for a race for threatening a journalist in June. In 2013 Busch left the Phoenix team and started over with Furniture Row Racing, another single-car team. Good luck with that. Regan Smith gets new opportunity When Furniture Row hired Kurt Busch, it left Regan Smith without a ride and with an uncertain future. Smith filled in admirably for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Hendrick Motorsports, Smith was named to drive for Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports Nationwide team in 2013. Smith got a head start on 2013 when he won the Nationwide season finale at Homestead for JRM. Since losing his ride at Furniture Row Racing to Kurt Busch, Smith has taken the Elliott Sadler route back to the Nationwide Series in order to re-establish himself as worthy of a top Cup ride. Smith, who also will run some Cup races for Phoenix Racing, is expected to perform well for JRM as well as head a star-studded Nationwide field in 2013.

Edwards gets new crew chief In 2012, Edwards went winless and failed to qualify for the Chase. It was the third time that he has gone winless after a big year prior. This time he will try to come back with a new crew chief. Veteran Jimmy Fennig, who has worked with such all-time greats as Bobby Allison and Mark Martin, led Kurt Busch to the 2004 championship and won six races in the past two seasons with Matt Kenseth.

Nationwide champion Stenhouse to Cup Rookie After winning consecutive Nationwide championships, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will get his first shot at Sprint Cup, replacing Kenseth in Roush’s No. 17 car. Stenhouse is considered a future star, with teammate Carl Edwards predicting he will win a Cup championship one day. He is a wellqualified rookie coming in with 8 wins, 52 top 10’s and seven poles in 67 starts. Roush Fenway has a long history of developing NASCAR stars — Martin, Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch and Edwards. Stenhouse could be the next to make his mark.

the 47th meeting between the nfc’s & afc’s best has some of the best storylines ever By jay betsill - @thefamousjay

Jim Harbaugh vs. John Harbaugh aka the “Har Bowl” When the topic of proud parents or a sibling rivalry arises in the NFL chatter, it usually revolves around Peyton and Eli Manning and their proud father, Archie. Now there is a new family to be included in the exclusive conversation because for the first time in the NFL, two brothers will square off in the Super Bowl. The two teams that advanced are being led by Jim and John Harbaugh, head coaches for the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. “I like reading history. I guess it’s pretty neat,” said John Harbaugh, the older of the two brothers. “But is it really going to be written about? It’s not exactly like Churchill and Roosevelt or anything. It’s pretty cool, but that’s as far as it goes.” “It’s a blessing and a curse,” Jim Harbaugh said. “A blessing because that is my brother’s team. And, also personally I played for the Ravens. Great respect for their organization. The curse part would be the talk of two brothers playing in the Super Bowl and that takes away from the players that are in the game.” Jim Harbaugh put the ball in the hands of Colin Kaepernick back in November, when his starter, Alex Smith, suffered a concussion. When he had two guys that he deemed to both have “hot hands,” Harbaugh stuck with Kaepernick even when Smith was cleared to return, a decision that was questioned by many experts and fans alike. After all, Smith fell just three points shy of making last year’s Super Bowl when the 49ers fell in the NFC title game to the eventual champion New York Giants. The Harbaughs have already faced off once, on Thanksgiving 2011 with Baltimore winning an ugly contest, 16-6. After the Ravens beat New England in the AFC Championship game, John was asked about two weeks of brotherly hype. “Let’s just cut that right now, you know what I mean?” he said. “Can we all agree? Let’s just forget about that.” While many fans and even distant followers of the NFL will have heard their fair share of the “Har Bowl” talk by mid-week, I am not real sure John is going to get his wish on that one. Ray Lewis to play final game in Super Bowl Since Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis announced on January 2 his ‘last ride’ in the NFL would coincide with the end of the Ravens’ postseason run, there was the possibility that each game would be his final journey out onto an NFL playing field. After victories on the road in Denver and New England, there is no longer get blitzed

any doubt: Win or lose, Lewis will do battle for the final time in New Orleans. “It’s going to be a great day, period, no matter what happens. And that’s kind of the way I’ve approached it,” the 17-year veteran linebacker said. “I haven’t even said, ‘Oh man, this is your last game, what do you think?’ I really haven’t. Because I just really am keeping my teammates focused on the real prize.” The last time Lewis played on the NFL’s biggest stage, the 13-time Pro Bowl selection earned MVP honors in Baltimore’s 34-7 win over the Kerry Collins-led New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. And, of course, it is impossible when mentioning Lewis and the Super Bowl to omit the incident after Super Bowl XXXV in Atlanta when two men died of stab wounds after a fight with members of Lewis’ entourage outside a nightclub. Lewis and two of his friends, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, were charged with murder. Lewis later agreed to plead guilty to obstruction of justice in exchange for the prosecution dropping murder charges against him. As part of his deal, Lewis testified against Oakley and Sweeting, who were subsequently acquitted of murder charges. Lewis would later pay settlements to victims’ Jacinth Baker’s grandmother and Richard Lollar’s fiancée. As for life after the NFL, Lewis reportedly spoke with multiple TV networks to provide commentary on pro football after his retirement. ESPN has offered Lewis a contract to work on

its NFL programming beginning this summer, according to SI. Randy Moss going for first Super Bowl ring. Again. Still seeking his first Super Bowl ring as he heads into his eighth postseason, Randy Moss has shared his playoff experiences with his 49ers teammates and it’s been particularly beneficial to the young players like Colin Kaepernick and Michael Crabtree. While there has been a lot of conversation on Ray Lewis getting his second ring before his retirement, the veteran who could have the biggest impact on the game is a rejuvenated Moss who returned to the NFL after returning from a short-lived retirement. “Randy’s been great,” running back Frank Gore said of the man who has caught more touchdowns than anyone except Jerry Rice. “He’s been here before, and he’s happy to be back, to get to our goal and that’s to win the Super Bowl.” Moss caught 28 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns during the regular season. He added two receptions for 25 yards in the 49ers’ 4531 victory over the Green Bay Packers

in an NFC divisional playoff game. The future Hall of Fame receiver took on a heightened role when starter Mario Manningham suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Seattle Seahawks on December 23. While Moss isn’t the same force as he was in his last trip to the Super Bowl in 2007 when he had 98 receptions for 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns during New England’s perfect 16-0 regular season, the NFL’s active leader in receiving yards has become an undisputed leader on the NFC champions. With San Francisco having so many weapons on offense including Kaepernick, Gore, Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis, Moss angelmaker could get lost in the Ravens’ defensive game plan and wind up being the difference in whether the 49ers add a sixth Lombardi Trophy to the franchise’s collection.

what to expect while watching the super bowl By jason fleck - comments@blitzweekly Can’t be a Super Bowl without the commercials - Every year even non-football fans tune in just for the commercials. Monday morning everyone will chime in on which company featured the best or funniest Super Bowl ads. Lip-synced halftime show - Beyonce has recently been accused of lip-syncing the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration. Will the same accusations happen for her halftime show performance or will it be a live performance? There might just be another halftime show controversy brewing, but a halftime show sure isn’t a halftime show without controversy. Nobody wants a boring show, this will be far from that. Ray Lewis career montage - There is sure to be a walk down hard-hitting memory lane reminiscing on the bone-breaking hits of Ray’s career. Player trouble story - A Super Bowl in the Big Easy can almost guarantee players getting into trouble. Being a part of one of the biggest sporting events in the world, it is impossible for players not to be noticed. Some players won’t be able to control themselves in these bright lights and we will hear about it. Kaepernicking sightings - Behind Ray Lewis, Colin Kaepernick will be the second most mentioned name in this year’s Super Bowl. After playing only half the season, he now has his team playing for the World Championship. Just

Ravens Old School D vs Niners New School D - The Ravens have had one of the best defenses in the league for years, not though this year it has fallen off a bit. The Niners have recently established themselves as one of the better defensive teams in the league. You can expect this to be a defensive game. Old guys vs. Young studs. Joe Flacco looks to strengthen his case as a postseason QB - Joe Flacco is currently 8-4 in playoff games with 6 of those coming on the road, he has secured his place as a winner in the playoffs. The Ravens have always been known as a defensive team, but have recently come on offensively. Flacco has been a huge part in that resurgence. Everyone knows that quarterbacks are remembered for the rings they win, if you can’t win your team a championship, you will always be known as a loser. Good luck Flacco. Unbeatable 49ers talk - The 49ers have yet to lose a Super Bowl game they have competed in and they are bound to keep that going. The Ravens may have the momentum and/or destiny on their side, but that means absolutely nothing to those stubborn Niners. Jim Harbaugh will look like a genius and the Niners move to 6-0 in Super Bowl games. Now that is amazing.

ebruary is the traditional month for love and Valentine’s Day is just on the horizon. Finding imaginative ways to profess your love without breaking the bank is a special task unto itself, but it can be done, and we have a few suggestions for you and your significant other.

Secret Rendezvous There is a movement in the Dallas culinary scene to take dinner underground; meaning that you book a dinner at an undisclosed location by a real chef who guides you through a special dinner shared with a small group of perhaps 20 to 25 people. These dinners are prepared on the premises at a legal kitchen hidden from the unsuspecting public, and are always a true dining guilty pleasure. On February 14th enjoy a five course meal from Chef Nicole that is served with a complimentary glass of bubbles and a stash of chocolates to take home. Nicole’s dinners are always superb as she uses fine local and all natural ingredients. Nicole is a classically trained chef who happens to be married to the chef at the Anatole’s SER steakhouse. The couple met at culinary school and have been cooking together since. This dinner is BYOB and costs $75 per person. There are limited reservations available for the Valentine’s Day dinner. Contact Nicole at nicole@chefnicoledallas.com for more information.

in Dallas that serves up incredible Santa Fe style cuisine. The restaurant is located in Preston Center facing Preston at Northwest Highway, and will be one of the few restaurants this day not forcing a special upcharged menu for you and your date. Order a la carte from the menu then enjoy specialty cocktails upstairs in the 8 Bar with a live DJ and no cover charge. Wine and drink specials offered all night, and passed appetizers will be complimentary. What a perfect way to spend the evening or drop by for a late night cocktail with your special person. Call (214) 217-0888 for more details.

Valentines Are Cheesy Scardello Cheese located on Oak Lawn near Lemmon in Dallas offers special classes and events, and Valentine’s Day is no different. Unfortunately the big day is sold out, but many will be celebrating all week. On the 13th Scardello offers a Chocolate, Cheese and Bubbles event. The same party will be held on the 15th of February, each for a mere $30 per

person. Enjoy the unique experience by calling in your reservation at 214-219-1300. Cupid, beware! Frankie’s Sports Bar & Grill is not the place for you this Valentine’s Day, as Frankie’s locations in Dallas, Lewisville and Fort Worth get ready to host people who have been burned by Cupid’s arrow. On Thursday, February 14, Frankie’s will throw an AntiValentine’s Day party, complete with free drinks

Chocolate Factory Take a chocolate culinary tour across Dallas on the cheap with Dallasbychocolate.com. This service provides a small busload of chocolate lovers an excursion across Dallas to some of the most noted chocolatiers and hidden gems. The $30 per person price of admission includes wine or bubbly and makes for an excellent day or night of romance. Other tours throughout the month include BBQ, pizza and ethnic food destinations. This service also has an upcoming dive bar tour. Gift certificates are available and make a fantastic gift. Email tardam@aol.com for details. Hidden Gems Found In Dallas Many of the top restaurants will be booked for this special day so look for newer and out of the way gems to ensure your reservation. The NYLO Southside rooftop provides one of the very best views of the city and they will be serving a special over the top Valentine’s dinner for $60 per person, with a $20 wine pairing for each course. His staff roasts fresh Anaheim chiles each day to create these full flavored dishes not too unlike he does at his restaurants in Santa Fe. I made it out to the new restaurant located in Preston Center at Northwest Highway to check out a few of the new menu items up for grabs.

There are some tried and true dishes available, like the fajitas, which can be ordered with the usual choices of beef or chicken, but Ocho has a wonderful fish option that will make your plate sing. he 2013 Oscar nominations are in, and as always, the most deserving films have been snubbed and the art-house dramas have been pushed to the top of the Best Picture list. Up-and-coming actors such as Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who have been capturing the hearts of audiences everywhere, have once again been pushed away from the Academy. At this time of year, it is nice to look back at those who have graced the silver screen and relive the memories of the movies that made us grip the armrests with excitement. Emma Stone is now a household name. After her movie debut in 2007’s Superbad, Ms. Stone has become a rising star, appearing in eleven movies thus far, along with voice acting for games, movies, and TV, as well as appearing on the teen program iCarly. She has become a very reputable actress in Hollywood, with three more movies on the way this year. With her unique voice and uncanny ability to steal the screen, Emma Stone has become the actress to watch. It is with great disdain that, yet again, she has received little credit from the Academy. In 2011, Stone played a leading role in The Help, a film showing the struggles of African-American housemaids during the Civil Rights Movement in the ‘60s. The film would go on to receive Oscar nominations, even winning the award for Best Supporting Actress. Yet, Emma was not even nominated for her fantastic performance. Though, to her credit, she has received other prestigious awards, alongside her amazing cast. At the beginning of each year, after the Oscar nominations are announced, the selected films always show that the Academy is suffering from a huge bias. Aside from the fact that the independent films steal the spotlight and that amazing actors and actresses are not present on the lists, it reveals a cookiecutter formula that is always in place when the movies are awarded. The greatest example of this would be the 2011 Oscars. The King’s Speech won almost every award, besting the likes of Inception, Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending thriller. Though The King’s Speech was a great film, it single-handedly won the show, even snagging the Best Original Screenplay award. Aside

from the fact that it beat a movie that should have undoubtedly won the Screenplay trophy, it reveals the formula-based nomination process and the clear bias when choosing the winners. That is not to say that the films chosen do not deserve any recognition, but it does show that the films that are the most “artistic” or “aesthetic” will, without a doubt, dominate the ceremony. Movies that push the envelope, display controversial ideas and themes, or

even just provide an amazing experience are always pushed aside. Films that have great cinematography, or in many cases, independent ventures that provide a simple narrative are usually the winners. It is time for the Academy to begin recognizing the more thought-provoking movies. It is time for movies with profound narratives to steal the show. And it is time for the most-deserving movies to finally win the awards that they are entitled to receive. www.blitzweekly.com

To be honest, everything that deserves to win will most likely lose. Everyone wants to see Django Unchained destroy the competition, but movies like Amour and Lincoln are the most likely to claim the trophies. Here are the predictions for the 2013 Oscars: • Best Picture – Amour Yep, that’s right. This sad tale of withering love will most likely win the coveted award. It has good acting and cinematography, and just enough emotional appeal to steal the trophy from the other films. • Best Actor – Daniel Day-Lewis Daniel Day-Lewis immerses himself into his roles. He becomes his characters. His portrayal of Abraham Lincoln was superb. • Best Actress – Jessica Chastain Zero Dark Thirty was a critical success thanks to its patriotic themes and top-notch acting. Jessica Chastain gave a great performance, and because this film is a favorite, she will most likely win the award. • Best Supporting Actor – Philip Seymour Hoffman His role in The Master was pivotal to the overall plot, and Hoffman’s performance was chilling.

• Best Supporting Actress – Helen Hunt The Sessions was a very… interesting film. Helen Hunt put her all into the role. • Best Original Screenplay – Django Unchained Optimism never hurt anyone. Cross your fingers now. • Best Animated Film – Brave It’s Pixar, it’s emotional, and it was good. • Best Cinematography – Skyfall The camera angles in this movie made the experience even better. Remember when Bond fought the sniper? We do. • Best Visual Effects – The Avengers The Avengers battled aliens in the middle of Manhattan. That amount of awesome should guarantee the Oscar. • Best Director – Michael Haneke If it is going to win Best Picture, then it is going to win Best Director. Enough said.

Liam Hemsworth has a lot of potential to become an action star. He has got the look and the added bonus of being a good actor! Chloe Grace Moretz and Gina Carano are another pair of potential up-and-comers. Another movie or two and Jeremy Renner will be there, too. I would really like to see more of Jaimie Alexander (Thor, The Last Stand). She did a great job in her action roles and looks the part as well.

BW: You’ve recently started a webseries Geeks and Gamers Anonymous (G.A.G.A.) that is a very ActionFlickChick.com entertaining and funny inside look at the world of geek culture and how gamers relate to each other BW: What are some of your favorite and the world. The Rambo series, Expendables G.A.G.A is a situation comedy about a video 2, Crank, Road House, Taken, Ong-bak, game/geek addiction support group. The The Raid: Redemption, Aliens, Terminator members each have their own reasons for 2, almost anything with Schwarzenegger and going- most of them don’t really feel like their Stallone (they’re my favorite action stars), Ip gaming/geekdom is a problem, they just Man, Bloodsport. My book, Action Movie want to meet others with the same interest, Freak, covers my favorite action films along with so the meetings end up being a little counterthe other best of the best films in the genre. Seeing a public figure be praised for being geeky has made a lot of people more BW: And, finally what’s next for comfortable with who they are. I

hate to break it to you, but it looks as if pop singer, Justin Bieber, is going to be around for a while. It’s a tough thing to say. But no worse than announcing chlamydia is on the rise, or The Space Shuttle just exploded. With this in mind, I started thinking. What if Bieber kept a journal about his trip from annoying pop star to annoying heritage artist? Detailing his attempts to be taken seriously? At least, how to keep people guessing about his next hairstyle. Okay, so he’d probably have to do these entries in pictograms. Regardless, I give you The Journals Of Justin Bieber. May 22nd 2013: I think it’d be cool to do a ‘remix’ of my song, “Boyfriend”. First, I gotta find out what a ‘mix’ is. Then, I’m so gonna do this.

Inside the mind of the Biebs

October 13th 2013: My manager thinks I need to do something shocking. I thought he meant not smiling all the time. He means doing a bleak album. Like Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. Where guys lose their jobs, take drugs and kill people. I don’t think this ever happens, but it’s a totally rad idea. I’ll start by writing a tune where a hot guy decides to cut his hair. Then thinks about buying a gun. But decides against it and goes clubbing instead. May 15th 2014: My album of Standards flops. Why? I picked great players and producers. Was it the string arrangements by Honey Boo Boo? Mom told me she was too avant-garde.

September 5th, 2014: My manager thinks my image is still too squeaky-clean. I have slept with lots of girls. Couldn’t one of them publicly state she’s taking one of those maternity tests? No one goes for it. I tell my manager I’ll get a new hairstyle, like, every day. Then, go to rehab for this. Say that I’m in there for cutting. A wicked long silence follows. December 10th 2014: I don’t want to go to jail, but it would so help my street cred. First, must ask Lindsay how she gets those threemonth sentences and then only serves 45 minutes. Also, ask the guards if they have, like, a jail store, where you can buy those orange jumpsuits. They’re so bitchin’! February 6th 2015: Sales are down, so I meet with T-Bone Burnette. We both decide I should do a ‘roots’ album. Until I tell T-Bone my ‘roots’ are Color Me Badd and New Kids On The Block. Another wicked long silence ensues. June 2nd 2015: To make my stuff darker, I try writing songs with Lou Reed. At one point, I say to Lou, “So, you did ‘Heroin’?” He smacks me in the head. I think there’s some confusion, cause I mean the song. Maybe he smacks me for other reasons entirely. April 6th, 2018: Now hosting The Tonight Show. I duet with Bob Dylan on “Like A Rolling Stone”. It’s pretty good. Afterwards, I tell Bob it would’ve been much better if he’d smiled during it. Then, he smacks me right in the head. He’s such an old mummy, I think some dust comes off. March 20th, 2020: Huge day for me. Going back to my old hairstyle. I’ve tried everything else. And getting 3 million fans back is more wicked hard than I thought. So, I had my stylist do that swirly, Beatles haircut I started out with. The stylist did call it another name, though, which confused me. He called it a “combover.” I don’t know what that is. But I bet it’s super cool.

VOL. 6 - ISSUE 1

spread the love, whether you’re single or double By posie pocket - @blitzweekly

I

t’s almost time for the receiving of sugary hearts and unwanted, oversized teddy bears. Ah yes, the day that is the source of relationship strains, over-thinking and disappointment. Now, I may sound like a single, love-hating pessimist, but I only speak the truth. If you’ve read any of my Pocketful of Peens articles, you know I love love. I am love’s number one advocate, wishing it to be spread near and far. But Valentine’s Day makes us wacky some times. Even when I am attached to a mate, I secretly dread Valentine’s Day. I’m not going to blame it on the rom-coms I’ve been drenched in my whole life. I’m not going to blame it on pisspoor experiences with ill-fated lovers. There’s honestly just too much pressure and hype surrounding this day. Don’t get me started on the excessively expensive dinner plates and scrounging for reservations. My ideal Valentine’s Day would be pizza, candy and an early night in for a roll in the hay. I’m guessing all fellas would raise his glass to that. Especially to a kinky V-day tryst. My favorite Valentine’s Day was my most recent one. I was single on February 14 for the first time in six years. Not blowing my budget on the perfect Valentine’s Day gift, ensemble and lingerie, I was excited to meet up with my girlfriends for dinner and a fun movie. So, if you’re single, don’t throw some pathetic Singles Awareness Day party. I freakin’ hate that shit. Valentine’s Day is not an obligatory festivity that must be recognized each year in a grandiose way. If you are feeling festive, do it elementary style and send Valentine’s to all your dear friends. Having a little treat in the mail will brighten anyone’s day. Better yet, go out to dinner with your friends and enjoy one another’s company. I remember one Valentine’s back in my collegiate years, I was dating the most standup guy. It was our first Valentine’s together and he truly did make an effort. He booked a reservation at one of the fanciest Italian joints in our college town. We showed up and the

bastards were to capacity. We were turned away and I was “bitch gotta eat” hungry. I knew I should have packed my chocolate chip reduced fat granola bars. As we drove around, searching for a place to dine, he suggested Buffalo Wild Wings. I was a high maintenance, hungry bitch and I wanted to eat some where with a table cloth! Not some shit shack where you lick your fingers or wipe ‘em on your game day jersey. I was fuming and made it known Buffalo Wild Wings was not a viable option. Not if he wanted to get lucky that night. Back then it was a Virgin Valentine’s Day so when I say lucky I probably meant a boob touch or dry humping. To make matters worse, the poor lad didn’t know the appropriate flower choice. He walked A-CG into my dorm room and my roommate could tell by my face I was pissed. The flowers looked like a Thanksgiving centerpiece. A pretty dreadful night, blown out of proportion. But in my defense, I had this sparkling hullabaloo of love in my head so of course anything he did was going to fall short. Now, years later, I would love a night of guilt-free dining at Buffalo Wild Wings, followed by some love-making (with the lights off of course after a feast at BWW- yikes). So, after accumulating Valentine dates over the years, my advice to the newcomers is to not have high expectations. It’s just another night. This year, it’s just another week night. I’m most excited for February 15, when all the candy is half off. You can bet I’ll be at the grocery store before work stocking up on my love notes splashed on candy hearts. Not to get all sentimental, but if anything, Valentine’s is a good reminder to extend love to our family and friends. I already have my hand-made Valentine’s assembled and written out. I can’t wait to pop them in the mail and send those glittery notes all over the country. Who knows, with low expectations, Cupid may even snag us with one of his love-drunk arrows.

JOKES

damn cheetos

A guy goes to a doctor and says, “Doc, you’ve got to help me. My penis is orange.” Doctor pauses to think and asks the guy to drop his pants so he can check. Damned if the guy’s penis isn’t orange. Doc tells the guy, “This is very strange. Sometimes things like this are caused by a lot of stress in a person’s life.” Probing as to the causes of possible stress, the doc asks the guy, “How are things going at work?” The guy responds that he was fired about six weeks ago. The doctor tells him that this must be the cause of the stress. Guy responds, “No. The boss was a real asshole, I had to work 20-30 hours of overtime every week and I had no say in anything that was happening. I found a new job a couple of weeks ago where I can set my own hours, I’m getting paid double what I got on the old job and the boss is a really great guy.” So the doc figures this isn’t the reason. He asks the guy, “How’s your home life?” The guy says, “Well, I got divorced about eight months ago.” The doc figures that this has got to be the reason for all of the guy’s stress. Guy says, “No. For years, all I listened to was nag, nag, nag. God, am I glad to be rid of that old bitch.” So the doc takes a few minutes to think a little longer. He inquires, “Do you have any hobbies or a social life?” The guy replies, “No, not really. Most nights I sit at home, watch some porno flicks and munch on Cheetos.”

Pisces February 19 – March 20 This is a great month to start new projects as long as they don’t take more than five days and won’t disparage the EMTs who find your body. Aries March 21 – April 19 You’ll spend Valentine’s Day with your one true love: Manti Te’o’s fake girlfriend and a box of porn.

OVER A MILLION JUST-AWOOFING NBC News tells of two Mansfield, Massachusetts, sisters asking their father, Ryan Cordell, for a puppy, so he made them a deal. If the girls could generate one-million responses on Facebook, he would agree. So, they created a page titled “Twogirlsandapuppy” and, not only did they get one-million “likes” in 6 hours, within a few days that number went to 1.6 million, with more than 140,000 shares and almost 40,000 comments.

Each pastry’s icing was crafted to resemble lesions, boils and warts caused by gonorrhea and other STDs. (Yuck!) ANOTHER NUTTY PROFESSOR British professor Stephen Graham, 47, apparently prefers ‘ole England over modern times. The Associated Press reported early 2013, this learned man had been convicted of damaging luxury cars with “polite graffiti”. Meaning, using a sharp screwdriver, Prof. Graham had scratched such inoffensive words as “very silly,” “really wrong” and “arbitrary” into the paintwork of vehicles including a Mercedes, an Audi, and a Volvo. (He claimed alcohol, antibiotics and prescription drugs had caused his behavior.)

How to survive valentine’s day T his one’s for the fellas. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner- do you have a game plan? I have been the unfortunate recipient of many terrible V-Day gifts, or no gift at all, and have had my fair share of awkward dates on this very special day. I’m here to help make your life easier this year and in return put a smile on your face, and your lady’s. Things you shouldn’t do: y Forget it’s V-Day. y Decide you’re going to protest against it

because it’s a “capitalist holiday”. No matter how you rationalize it, it’s not going away.

y Go handwritten - reference an inside joke and

finish it off with “I’m so glad I met you” or “I Love You”.

y Buy her flowers - Don’t buy her red roses and

baby’s breath. Visit your local florist or pick some up cheap from the grocery store. Have the florist suggest an arrangement or go for tulips, lilies, irises or daises.

Obviously, the date is the most important part of the evening. If this is a blind date or you haven’t been dating that long, don’t go over the top. Choose something that’s fun and unique.

y Express your love through the words of

Hallmark employees.

y Surprise her with an oversized teddy bear

holding a red heart that says “I Love You”.

y Buy her a heart-shaped box of chocolates

from the grocery store.

For the love of God, don’t buy her a blender or a pair of running shoes. One year I swear I got a copy of My Cousin Vinny on DVD…I had never heard of or seen the movie in my life. I guess he was just a really big Joe Pesci fan. Things you should do: y Go handmade - Make your own card. The

more it looks like a third grader made it, the more she’ll love it. Zilber

Take her miniature golfing if it’s during the day or grab some Cajun food at The Free Man. What could be better than cocktails, fried gator tail and free live jazz music? If you’re willing to take a risk and break the ice, challenge Timmy’s 8 year old birthday party to a game of laser tag or hit up the hole-in the-wall karaoke bar and show her what you’re made of (my favorite is The Goat). If you choose a playful date, take her out to dinner (somewhere like Vickery Park or Fireside Pies) and drinks afterwards so you can get to know each other better. Ask her questions about herself. I love to talk about myself, all girls do. Even if we’re rambling about our pet bunny or complaining about how much our feet hurt, just smile and act like you’re listening. If she already has a key to your apartment, then give her an excuse to wear a dress and heels. Impress her with dinner at: The French Room ($80 per person) and Hotel St. Germain ($85 fixed price per person) offer Valentine’s specials for decadent three-course meals. If you’re on a slightly tighter budget, try somewhere tasty and new, like Oak, Sissy’s Southern Kitchen or Samar (more tapas!). Drop a little more cash on your lady if you’ve been together for a while. I went on a date last week to The Wine Therapist and ended up sitting at the bar chatting for hours over a glass of red wine. Okay, maybe I had three glasses. Take her there or somewhere equally cute and intimate afterwards. Now that you know not to show up at her doorstep with a teddy bear the size of a MiniCooper, or surprise her with the best thing you could find at the gas station down the street you’ve set yourself up for a successful evening. Here a few more of my favorite V-Day ideas:

yMilk & Honey (1906 N. Henderson Ave yMovida Boutique (Mockingbird Station)

How to satisfy her sweet tooth: y Chocolate Secrets - Offering 4 desserts,

live jazz, a gift and a bottle of champagne February 14th, 15th and 16th (Call 214-2529801 to make a reservation).

y Dallas by Chocolate - Evening of chocolate

and wine with a private bus chauffer ($40 per person)

y Edible Arrangements - I honestly wish

someone would just buy me one of these! Choose the “Chocolate Indulgence Strawberries Box” for $45 or the “Lovely Berries Box” for $39)

Where to take her after dinner: y Blood, Chainsaw and Valentines - Moxley

Manor’s Valentine’s Day Massacre ($15 per person).

y Galaxy Drive-In Movie Theater ($6 per

feature)

y The XX (soft indie rock) at the Granada

Theater or Sundown next door (offers free live music nightly)

If you’ve been the victim (or the culprit) of a Valentine’s Day disaster, I would love to hear about it! Please tweet me @AmberLaFrance with #MyCousinVinny. I’ll give a shout out to my favorite disaster. If you’re still scratching your head after reading this, reach out to me for more V-Day ideas via Twitter. You’re welcome,

Amber
