Restoring the Carnegie building in Erith as a community hub

The second phase of the restoration work at the Exchange, formerly known as the Carnegie Library, Erith is now entering its final stages and is expected to be complete later this spring.

CAR CHARGING POINTS

@bexleylife

@bexleylife

The works include further repair and renovation of the first and second floor, a new lift to make the space fully accessible and the completion and fit out of new workshop spaces as well as external landscaping and new openings to provide better access to the ground floor. The workshops will provide a space for local people to learn skills in ceramics, textiles, woodwork, print, performance and the creation of garden spaces. Councillor Louie French, Bexley’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Growth said: “Following the uncertain year that we’ve had, it is great that we have still been able to progress our ambitious plans for Erith. The restoration of the old Carnegie Building will improve the town as a place to live and do business and will deliver a boost just when it is needed.” The improvements are funded by the Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and by further fund raising by local company The Exchange who are managing the building. The latest works follow the restoration of the basement of the building which was completed in 2019 when the new Bookstore café and community space opened. Sarah Batten, Director, The Exchange said: “In spite of the challenges presented by the pandemic, the project team have pushed ahead with the building works, creating a beautiful space for local residents to enjoy and Luse for years to come. Never before are community spaces - where we can all come together in the real world - quite so important.” For more information about events and programming and how you can become involved at the Exchange visit www.theexchangerith.com It is hoped that an opening event, that complies with guidelines on social distancing, can be held later in the year for the community, to celebrate the completion of the second phase of works. www.bexley.gov.uk

Hi, I’m Nicola Eden and I’m the owner of Extra Help in Bexley…

Extra Help is a national, home-help and cleaning service that operates throughout the UK and I’m very excited to be bringing these services to our local area. Working within the Bexley community for the past 15 years and being a busy mum, I’ve witnessed, first-hand, the importance of reliable and high-quality home-help. We’re particularly passionate about helping the older community to stay in their own homes and remain independent by assisting with all daily tasks, excluding personal care. We support busy, working professionals, parents and literally anyone who needs a helping hand. This allows our clients to spend more time to spend with friends and family, or just grab a bit of ‘me time’. We also provide companionship and household help for the elderly and companionship for those who are lonely and isolated – we love making a difference to people’s lives! Services offered but not limited to: • Domestic cleaning • Spring cleans / deep cleans • End of tenancy cleans • Meal preparation • Companionship and sitting service • Shopping errands • Transport to supermarket, doctors, hospital appointments, hairdressers • Gardening • House maintenance • Dog walking and basic pet care • Parental help • Babysitting • Assistance during social gatherings and children’s parties Extra Help Bexley is fully insured and all home-helpers are personally interviewed, reference and DBS checked, for added reassurance. Charity Lifelites donates life-changing

technology for children at hospice Demelza

Hospice

The children’s charity Lifelites has donated brand-new life-changing technology worth tens of thousands of pounds for life-limited and disabled children using the services of the children’s hospice Demelza Hospice Care in Eltham. All of the children cared for by Demelza have life-threatening or life-limiting conditions, made all the more difficult by the COVID-19 pandemic. The specialist technology, which Lifelites donated this year, can give them the opportunity to do things they and their parents never thought possible. This technology enables these children to play, to be creative, to control something for themselves and communicate, for as long as possible. Lifelites-donated technology enables children to escape the confines of their conditions, connect with their loved ones and communicate their wishes and fears, which is proving especially vital during this unsettling time. The technology, along with training and technical support services which Lifelites donates, costs around £50,000 over four years. After four years, Lifelites aims to return to replace the equipment with the latest, up-to-date technology that is bespoke and most suitable for the children using Demelza. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Lifelites-donated adaptive iPads have been in high demand. While for many of us this is an everyday object, for life-limited and disabled children it can change their entire world. Often for the first time in their lives, they can control something themselves, engage with the world around them and express their feelings and thoughts. Lifelites is delighted to have received enough funding to donate multiple iPads together with drop-proof cases to make them easily accessible. All iPads include bespoke apps that fit to the children’s needs. Another piece of equipment that Lifelites donated was the POD, a mobile and sensory pop-up tent that offers room for every child, irrespectives of their abilities. It comes in a rucksack so that hospice staff can easily take it to the children wherever they are: in the hospice or even in the children’s own homes. The sensory tent enables life-limited and disabled children - even if they are in a wheelchair - to escape their often stressful lives into a world of their own. They are surrounded by colourful moving images and relaxing music. Simone Enefer-Doy, Chief Executive of Lifelites says, “Lifelites is delighted to be able to donate lots of our magical technology for the children at Demelza in South East London. The wide range of equipment is specially adapted so that it can be used by anyone, regardless of their ability. All of Lifelites-donated technology is mobile so that hospice staff can reach every child, in hospice as well as in children’s own homes. Every moment is precious for these children and their families, this assistive technology gives them the opportunities they deserve to make the most of their time. “We couldn’t have provided this package if it wasn’t for the generosity of our supporters, so for this we are incredibly grateful.” Mirelle Cassidy, Lead Nurse at Demelza Hospice Care for Children, South East London, said: “We are hugely grateful to Lifelites for the generous donation of equipment and the comprehensive training programme they offer, which allows our Care teams to work with the children and maximise the benefits offered by this technology. Many of the children that attend our hospice in Eltham have complex communication needs. The range of equipment helps children communicate, develop new skills and can help develop a degree of independence”. www.lifelites.org

Greenwich Theatre reopening, better than ever... by James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre. Theatres across the country are currently working out when, and how, they might consider reopening. Current guidance suggests that from mid-May venues will be able to welcome socially distanced audiences, but the challenge for venue managers is putting together a programme of shows that are financially viable with only a third of the seats available for sale – and allowing for the fact that cast members may still have to remain distanced from one another as well. One particular style of show that lends itself to this model is the ‘evening with’, a chance to get ‘up close and personal’ with a famous or notable personality. However, being theatre, rather than a chance to attend a Q&A by a living person these solo shows can offer the audience the opportunity to spend time with a figure from history. Greenwich Theatre has three such shows lined up for the months ahead, with two performed by Liverpool based writer and actor Tayo Aluko. First up, on Saturday 12 June in Call Mr Robeson, Aluko offers an evening in the company of Showboat star Paul Robeson. Remembered as a world-famous actor and singer, Robeson’s now largely forgotten political activism led many to describe him as the forerunner of the civil rights movement. His sympathies for the Soviet Union and for communism, and his criticism of the United States government and its foreign policies, caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Aluko’s show, which was seen at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2012 and in the West End in 2013, recalls the actor and activist’s remarkable

and eventful life – and of course features a virtuoso rendition of the unforgettable Ol’ Man River. The following evening in Just An Ordinary Lawyer, Aluko turns his attention to Nigerian-born Tunji Sowande, a keen cricketer, an active solo concert performer and the lawyer who quietly broke through one barrier after another in the late 1970s to become Britain’s first black judge. Then, the following week, the hilarious Hurricane Michael offers a comic insight into Michael Fish, the celebrity weatherman who famously denied the approach of the great storm of 1987. Admittedly the show is actually an hour in the presence of Michael Phish (played by the astonishingly talented Russell Layton) and takes an entirely tongue-in-cheek look at the events that led up to that famous on-air denial, but given the reception with which the show has been met (including a rave from Michael Fish himself) this promises to be a uniquely entertaining show. These shows serve to do a number of things. They each tell a powerful or entertaining story. They each offer a glimpse back in time – to a moment of political unrest, of groundbreaking social change or of a great natural phenomenon sweeping the country. Most of all though, they remind us that all of the most memorable moments in our history, whether changing society forever or just leaving us with a talking point that will endure for years to come, were driven by individuals. In driving the civil rights movement and the subsequent diversification of the British legal system, the role played by Robeson and Sowande cannot be overstated, while Michael Fish, with his iconic “don’t worry”, showed us how much credence we give to those on television and just how wrong that can be. As theatres begin to reopen their doors, it is clear that we won’t need large casts or huge stage sets to do what theatre does best – to tell a good story and make us feel something. Some of the smallest shows set to take place on stages across the country this year will inevitably prove to be the shows that stay with us long after the curtain has come down. www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk
