Community Champions needed to help reduce risk of local lockdown Community minded people are being invited to sign-up as Community Champions to help reduce the risk of a local outbreak of COVID-19. The Community Champions will help reach out to less well networked communities and individuals to ensure they receive and understand the information they need to keep safe and well. To become a Champion, you do not need specific experience or to give up a lot of your time. The only thing that is essential is a willingness to support people in your local community. The Council and its partners will work with the Community Champions to help keep people safe, reassured and supported. They will be asked to share important public health messages and information on support available for the vulnerable. They can also help by giving feedback to ensure these communications are effective and reach as many people as possible. If you are interested in helping with this vital work, please sign-up online or send an email, via the website. Councillor Teresa O’Neill OBE, chairman of the Bexley Health & Wellbeing Board, which is overseeing the project, said. “The contribution that community and faith groups, volunteers and mutual aid groups have made over recent months has been invaluable. Now we face a different challenge: reducing the risk of another lockdown of the kind we have seen in other parts of the country and the world. “Please get in touch if you can help us keep people safe over the weeks and months ahead - especially those who are most at risk. The pandemic has not affected everyone equally and we need help to make sure we reach people who are vulnerable and isolated.” The Council will stay connected with people who volunteer to become Community Champions by phone, email and using closed social media groups. If you would like to know more about our Community Champions network, please email via the website or write to:Communities Engagement Team, Civic Offices, Bexleyheath DA6 7AT. www.bexley.gov.uk

Virtual 2020 graduation for Bexley Uni students

12

Despite having a school year like no other, 145 Bexley Children’s University students were able to graduate from this year’s programme, joining in either a Covid-safe in-school graduation or special virtual ceremony last month.

Children’s University is a national charitable federation and encourages children to try new experiences and acquire new skills through extra-curricular activities. Children taking part in the University programme receive a ‘passport’ and get a stamp for every hour of activity they complete at a validated ‘Learning Destination’. These are places where children can 'travel' with their passport. With things being very different this year because of the pandemic, new ways had to be found for pupils to earn stamps for their Children’s University passports. Pupils attended virtual and Covid-safe Learning Destinations and took on Bexley CU Challenges throughout lockdown and the summer holiday via Google Classrooms and social media. Challenges included creating an online dance party using their computer coding skills, cooking up treats in a Masterchef-style challenge, plus creating fitness videos and poems to help reflect on their feelings and emotions over the past few months. By completing the challenges, pupils taking part earned an extra 289 hours of extra-curricular learning. Added to the hours earned by attending school clubs and Learning Destinations, this resulted in 11,465 hours of extra-curricular learning during this past year. Added to last year’s total, this has resulted in 27,310 hours of extra-curricular learning for Children’s University pupils since the scheme started in October 2018. The in-school and virtual graduations saw the graduates being presented with their certificates and gifts and CU organisers shared messages of congratulations and poems from celebrities such as David Walliams and Adam Hill, as well as Bexley’s Children’s University Officer, Louise Chalkley. Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr John Fuller said: It has been a busy year for the pupils taking part in Children’s University and it had been great to see that even a lockdown could not stop these fantastic pupils from learning! We are looking forward to another fantastic year and are already planning celebrations for all the graduates of 2021. “The CU will also be embarking on a research project with the Education Endowment Foundation looking at the impact that Children’s Universities have on pupils’ attainment and wellbeing. I’m delighted that Bexley has been chosen to take part.” To find out more about the Children’s Universitiy in Bexley, or if you are interested in becoming a part of Children’s University, either as a school, a family or a Learning Destination, or in the research project, email Bexley.CU@bexley.gov.uk www.bexley.gov.uk

A wonderful theatre experience, even with social distancing... by James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre.

‘JAMES sets down the note and leaves. MR GRIMSHAW picks it up and swaps it for another envelope - carefully copying the address on the front.’ That’s surely a pretty straight forward stage direction, and it appears near the beginning of Act Two in Russ Tunney’s adaptation of The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase - the Christmas show that I am directing at Greenwich Theatre. At this point in the story, with the help of their faithful servant James, the young cousins Bonnie and Sylvia are trying to get a letter to a contact in the nearby town, so that they can be rescued from their wicked governess Miss Slighcarp. However, Miss Slighcarp‚‘s henchman Mr Grimshaw foils their plan and switches the letter for a blank version. Normally working out a sequence like that in a play would take about as long as it takes to read the line. As long as you have two envelopes and a pen, it’s simple. That is, until you’re directing a play under social distancing rules where no two actors can go within 2 metres of each other or touch @bexleylife

the same props, costumes or pieces of set. My Mr Grimshaw (Serin Ibrahim) cannot pick up the letter set down by James (Akshay Khanna) so how do we do the switch? Making theatre under COVID means working within all of those constraints, but the best shows made now - like the best magic - will be those where the audience doesn’t notice how things are done, where props seem to pass from hand to hand, where characters have thrilling interactions, where actors are constantly on the move. Not the concert performances where each actor stands in a fixed position and doesn’t move in a static retelling of a story, but the shows where careful choreography and sleight of hand make apparently impossible things achievable. Of course that’s not all that I’m putting into this show. It is far more than an exercise in defeating the limitations of social distancing. The adaptation is already a joyous, snow-filled, hilarious retelling of Joan Aiken’s perennial family favourite, and with our regular pantomime villain Anthony Spargo as Miss Slighcarp it promises to be an unforgettable show. We have also commissioned all new music for the show, and with the exceptional young musical director David Haller at the helm the music does so much more than carry the songs. It underscores scenes, drives the excitement of the action, even serves to add extra jokes to the show. This is set to be a very strange Christmas season for theatre and for theatregoers, with audiences also having to spread out and socially distance. Still, for me that’s all the more reason to get out and see a live show this season, to follow the rules but to share an experience with other people - and I can’t wait to share this entirely safe and totally festive production of The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase with our intrepid audiences. www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk

Ideal presents and a great discount from Renard Press Launched in June this year by Will Dady, a local Bexley resident, the new independent book publisher, Renard Press, is delighted to have its first five titles in print - all inexpensive editions with high production values. Bars Fight and Phillis Wheatley were released in celebration of Black History Month – the first known work by an African American author and the first published volume of poetry by an African American author respectively, these two books have caused a stir, since they are landmarks in literature and yet not well known – and this is the only standalone edition of Bars Fight. This was followed by Virginia Woolf’s iconic A Room of One’s Own, resplendent in gold foil, with notes and extra material on the author’s life and works; next came Bram Stoker’s Dracula’s Guest – a short story originally intended to be the opening of Dracula – and Leo Tolstoy’s A Letter to a Hindu, with an introduction by Mahatma Gandhi. Renard is pleased to offer Bexley Life readers a 35% discount on all orders placed via our website this year. www.renardpress.com

Cabinet approves next step in budget planning

The Cabinet approved the latest Medium Term Financial Strategy setting out the next steps in planning the Council’s budget for 2021/22 at its recent meeting. Cabinet Members received an updated plan to balance next year’s budget based on the latest information available to the Council. Further changes may be needed in the new year because of the uncertainty caused by the pandemic and once the government has provided the Council’s funding allocation, which is due this month. “All Councils have the financial challenge to balance their books, just as you will manage your household income and expenditure,” said Councillor Teresa O’Neill OBE, Leader of the Council. “There continues to be uncertainty on the funding of local government and the government reviews we were expecting this year have been delayed for a further year. The Council however must set a balanced budget for the next financial year. We have to plan based on what we know now, including the potential impact of the COVID pandemic, which creates more uncertainty.” The Cabinet considered a report on the consultation on six savings proposals that will affect residents, that took place over the summer. It noted the detailed comments that had been received from the nearly 4,000 people who took part in the consultation. It was agreed that the service delivery model for children centres needs be developed further and an extra consultation will take place on this early next year. A decision on the other options will be made by Cabinet this month. It also agreed to ask the government for a capitalisation order, which will give the Council the option to spread some of the unprecedented financial impact and risk of the pandemic over future years. A recording of the meeting and the agenda papers are available online. The next report on the Council’s financial forecasts and plans will be discussed at the Cabinet’s meeting on 15 December. This will include more details on new savings proposals following an in-depth review of services, establishment costs and staffing levels. www.bexley.gov.uk
