Bexley backs STARS schools programme
Local schools that sign up for the STARS Community Programme can access free resources, ideas and information to help families commit to more active, safe and sustainable travel.
Each activity the school completes is a step towards earning their STARS Bronze, Silver, or Gold accreditation. Matthew Norwell, Bexley’s Director of Place, said: “The average journey to school is less than one kilometre, that’s around a 10-minute walk. By swapping car journeys for walking, cycling or scooting, STARS schools can make a real difference to our borough. It also helps keep pupils fit and healthy, as well as reducing congestion around the school gates. There are over 100 inspiring activities to choose from to help schools earn their accreditation, many of which they do already.” There are around 1,500 London schools, nurseries and colleges already taking part. Each year STARS schools in London replace 13 million miles’ worth of car journeys with walking, cycling, and scooting. Joanne Tyler, teacher at Days Lane Primary School, Bexley, commented: “We have been part of the STARS programme for a number of years. During this time, we have seen a reduction in car usage and have encouraged children and their families to be more active and enjoy the benefits of walking. The Council’s Walk ‘n’ Wheel competition was particularly effective in encouraging children and their families to choose a more environmentally mode of transport to school.” STARS is a Transport for London accreditation scheme for schools, nurseries and colleges, designed toLinspire young Londoners to travel sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely. Schools can sign up by emailing yvonne.de-loureiro@bexley.gov.uk or by visiting www.STARS.tfl.gov.uk

Has the past year given you time to think about a career in fostering? In 1997, Chrysalis Care was founded by former foster carers, Lynda and Lou Boden, who had a vision to transform the lives of children and young people, by providing foster care of the highest quality. Having fostered themselves for fifteen years, they understood that the decision to foster is not done in haste and that a supportive hand is needed every step of the way, on the fostering journey. After almost 24 years and 100’s of transformed lives later, this essential ingredient still remains. Chrysalis Care have developed a family culture, maintaining an intimacy that spans the whole organisation, with two of the Boden daughters directing the company, drawing on their own experience of growing up in a fostering family and on their professions as a social worker and teacher/play therapist. Many of the foster carers who were approved in those early days, still actively foster with Chrysalis Care, sharing the challenges faced over the past year or so, in providing safe and nurturing foster homes for children and young people across London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Over the years, they have added to the foster carer family enabling the company to care for more children in need. In fact, Chrysalis welcomed some new foster carers in 2020, as people re-evaluated what they wanted to do with their lives and reconsidered their vocational options. Children and young people need to be fostered for all sorts of reasons and come from a range of backgrounds, so a diverse group of foster carers is essential, which is why the quest for the best foster carers is never ending. Each fostering situation is unique, from children with disabilities, to parent and child placements, to teenagers and on both long and shortterm basis. Some fostering situations are so long term that they lead to foster carers seeing a child grow up, get married and become parents themselves! Others enable a child to be cared for whilst their parent is unable to, for instance if they require a hospital stay. You don’t need to be married or even co-habiting and in fact, some children are better placed with a single foster carer and others will thrive in a two-parent household. Foster carers are all ages, as there is no upper age limit; as long as you are fit and healthy and ready to meet the needs of the child or young person, Chrysalis Care welcome your fostering enquiry. It may be that you have a ‘colourful’ past of your own and in most instances, they can explore that with you and recognise the value in bringing rich experiences that may help you to understand some of the challenges faced by children, young people and families. You will be thoroughly assessed by a qualified assessor and although this is in-depth, it will provide you with some useful insights about yourself and prepare you for the fostering journey ahead. Perhaps you are already fostering, are thinking of fostering, are considering a change in vocation, are retired or have been made redundant and like to learn more about becoming a foster carer and if so, Chrysalis Care want to hear from you. Contact the team today or come along to one of the many forthcoming information sessions, where Chrysalis Care staff are ready to answer your fostering questions. After nearly 24 years, they have so much expertise to share, that there isn’t a question they cannot answer or assurance they cannot give. As a Chrysalis Care foster carer, you receive 365/24 hour support, monthly supervision with a qualified social worker and access to on/offline training and support from the Chrysalis Care children's’ services department. You will become part of a valuable team, empowered to develop the skills, knowledge and resilience to become outstanding foster carers for children and young people aged 0-18 years, from a range of backgrounds and circumstances. Chrysalis Care foster carers often tell them that the choice to foster was one of the best of their lives! Contact Chrysalis Care on 0208 2982800, email info@chrysaliscare.org or via website ‘Contact Us Chrysalis Care Fostering’. Chrysalis Care look forward to guiding you through your new adventure. www.chrysaliscarefostering.org

A busy season at The Bob Hope Theatre Following on from our two critically acclaimed post-lockdown productions (The Revlon Girl and Teechers), the Bob Hope Theatre, Eltham is looking forward to welcoming you to the rest of this packed season. by John Goodwin
We, of course, have our ever-popular pantomime Dick Whittington which will run through weekends throughout January 2022. This all-singing, all-dancing, toe-tapping treat of a show promises to be a remedy for those Winter blues for all the family. Next, in March (2nd - 5th) the BHT is proud to present Calendar Girls - The Musical. The true story of the Calendar Girls launched a global phenomenon, a million copycat calendars, a record-breaking movie, stage play and now the musical written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow which coined the term ‘craughing’ - the act of crying and laughing at the same time. With unforgettable songs, every performance continues to add to the millions already raised for charity and also prove that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman. After this, in May (18th - 21st) we present Vincent in Brixton - The 2003 award-winning play by Nicholas Wright. The play premiered at London’s National Theatre with Jochum ten Haaf in the title role. It transferred to the Playhouse Theatre and later to Broadway. It focuses on Vincent van Gogh’s time, as a young man living in Brixton, London, in 1873 before he became an artist. In the play, which is largely fictional, he falls in love with an English widow. The play was revived by The Original Theatre Company in 2009. In June (15th - 18th) Allan Osborne will be directing Mike Bartlett’s play King Charles III. The play centres on the accession and reign of King Charles III of the United Kingdom, the possible regnal name of Charles, Prince of Wales, With our youth-group, the New Stagers presenting a concert in July (8th and 9th) and many guest productions including Swing Commanders (Feb 6th), KT Bush Band (March 19th), Kipps (Eldorado Musical Productions, 30th March - 2nd April), Shrek (Bromley Players, April) Matilda Jnr (British Theatre Academy, April), Wind in the Willows (Sidcup Musical Productions, April 28th - 30th), The Pirates of Penzance (Ferrier Operatic Society, May 26th - 28th) and a Roan Theatre Company production, (July 13th - 16th) we hope that our season provides something for everyone. Finally, we will be holding our Christmas Craft Fair and Coffee Morning on Saturday 4th December 2021. Come for crafts, coffee, cake and a chat from 10.30am til 1pm in the BHT Bar. Free Admission.

It’s Panto time! by James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre.
When you routinely present a pantomime that has been hailed as “one of the best in the country” by the British Theatre Guide, and when you picked up the Off-West End award for Best Pantomime in 2019, what do you offer to audiences after being forced to take a year off?
Until last Christmas, Greenwich Theatre hadn’t missed a pantomime season for 20 years, and writer/dame Andrew Pollard has been with us for most of those, so we have built a loyal audience who know what to expect from a festive show here in Greenwich - but how do you follow the unprecedented industry closure of COVID? With the pandemic still affecting people around the world, it is important to consider the safety of our cast and crew, and to take measures to ensure a more robust cleaning regime and a bit more space for a team who are routinely working in close quarters for three months of the year. Therefore, this year we have changed our stage configuration, bringing our acclaimed live band up out of the orchestra pit, and we have opened up the stage so instead of using our revolving set we are presenting the show in a new way and in a much larger space. For audiences, it is equally important to keep certain performances to limited seating, to encourage mask wearing, and to make sure people feel safe and comfortable as they return to the theatre. All of that is in place – safety measures and COVID secure operating patterns are necessary and therefore easy to implement – but what show do we present? With Andrew Pollard back as writer we could bring just about anything into a pantomime. Previous years have seen Red Riding taking on a villain determined to chop down her forest and build a shopping complex, Sleeping Beauty wake up in 1969 and head to the moon, Robinson Crusoe end

up in the Wild West… so do we come back with a huge title, Cinderella or Aladdin, one of those shows that everyone knows? For us, with a long time to think it over, we decided that it was more exciting to do something new, so Andrew has taken on the traditional nursery rhyme, The Queen of Hearts, and built the show around that. The knave who stole the tarts is there, there’s a princess, a prince, a fairy and a dastardly villain, and in true Greenwich style there’s a whole host of high energy musical numbers, a story with real heart and a few surprises thrown in. Audiences are already loving the show, and we are playing right through to January, which means we are also planning our Spring season now. With a major line-up including a comedy by one of this country’s most lauded writers, a brand-new musical, one of the world’s best-known gothic thrillers and the return of the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, Greenwich Theatre really is back - and we can’t wait to welcome audiences as we move into what we confidently expect to be our biggest year ever. www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk The Queen of Hearts - 19th November - 2nd January

Festive comedy at Bexley Park Jeff Innocent - Comedian • Writer • Actor Monday 27th December
Jeff has reached legendary status on the circuit and with audiences and quite frankly should be on TV a lot. A must-see act, simply one of the best there is.
Voted Comedians’ Comedian Of The Year 2016 (a bit like Players’ Player at football, this one means the most). Jeff has a unique appeal due to his contrast between his East End ‘Geezer’ appearance and demeanour along with his educated philosophical delivery. A rare act indeed. Jeff has also written for various publications and lectures on Stand-Up Comedy at The London Comedy School as well as having his own comedy academy.

debuts for Brazil
At last, Bexley has its first locally produced full International female player, it ticks the final box.
Daniella Staddon was first selected to play for Brazil under 17s in 2020, by virtue of dual nationality, but Covid caused the cancellation of the competition, since then there have been many false starts for her debut but eventually the long-awaited day came when she was upgraded to the full adult team. Daniella arrived in Brazil during late Sept 2021 to attend the team’s preparations and was presented with her Brazil International Cap. On 18th October 2021 Daniella made her debut for the Brazil adult ladies’ team against USA in Mexico City while competing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifying competition. Originally this was to be hosted in The USA but travel restriction issues saw Mexico step in on short notice and the competition was hosted by the Mexico Cricket Association with all matches being played at the Reforma Athletic Club, the oldest sports club in the country (formed in 1894) but cricket has been played in Mexico since at least 1827. Mexico City is a demanding place to play, high altitude - 2300 metres above sea level - which brings its own challenges to players, the rarity of the air can cause breathing and exhaustion problems. There is discussion on whether this is the highest ground above sea level in the world where international cricket has ever been played. Our warmest congratulations go out to Daniella and all our wishes that she continues on this inpiring path.
