Mytime Active to

For all your flooring needs - the best service for your ‘dream flooring’

leave Barnehurst Golf Course

Barnehurst Golf Course operators Mytime Active have asked to be released from their lease with the Council from 31 March 2021. Mytime Active have operated the course since 2009, but like many other service providers, the current pandemic has affected their business. Cabinet Member for Places, Cllr Peter Craske will take the decision this week to allow Mytime Active to withdraw from the site next year. The decision will be subject to the Council’s usual seven day ‘call in’ period. Mytime Active will be contacting all club members and any remaining customers that still have bookings at the course to ensure all outstanding customer queries are concluded satisfactorily. Anyone with concerns or questions should contact contactcentre@mytimeactive.co.uk, call 020 8323 1765 or visit the Mytime Active website: https://www.mytimeactive.co.uk/barnehurst-golf-course-faqs Cllr Craske said: “This year has seen so many businesses affected by this terrible virus. I’ll be very sad to see Mytime Active end their relationship with us. They have operated the course well over the last 11 years and it will be a shame to see them go, but I fully understand the reasoning behind their decision. “I have been assured that they will continue to maintain the course up until 31 March and will be on hand to answer any enquiries until then. We hope to start our search for new course operator in the new year.” The current plan is for the site to be marketed as a golfing facility in order for the clubhouse, driving range and course to reopen as swiftly as possible. There are no plans to use the site for any other purpose. The decision is available to read in full at: https://democracy.bexley.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=2950

New visitor cabins for Avante Care & Support

At the end of last year Avante Care & Support proudly launched their new visitor cabins across all 10 of their care homes across Kent, Bexley and Greenwich, so that residents can meet safely with family members despite the coronavirus outbreak. This has meant families are able to keep in contact with loved ones until actual physical contact is possible once again.

Fitted out with comfortable chairs and decorated with pictures, the cabins will support families to visit loved ones in a safe and welcoming environment. The cabins have separate entrances for the resident and visitor and all furniture and the inside of the structure is thoroughly cleaned after each visit. When the new visitor cabins opened in December families were keen to make use of the new visiting facility and immediately booked visiting times to see their loved ones. The cabins have been warmly welcomed by everyone and staff have been inundated with positive messages and feedback about the new visiting facilities. One family member from Court Regis commented on social media: “This is amazing, well done for keeping the show on the road and the innovation to keep people together”. Other comments included: “What a brilliant idea. Emotional needs are just as important. Your team should be so proud of themselves!” “The compassion your home has shown to the service users is out of this world. To me that’s caring for people above and beyond. We need more places like this. Well done.” Avante is delighted to now be able to offer families the opportunity to visit their loved ones, admittedly we know it’s not the same as physical contact but the cabins now allow families to see their loved one’s face to face through a bespoke screen in a safe, warm and welcoming environment. All of the cabins are heated, and have a fitted sink with hot and cold water for hand washing, as well as hand sanitiser and all necessary PPE available for use. www.avantecare.org.uk

One of Bexley’s best kept secrets G J Wisdom & Co Auctioneers & Valuers are a Bexley based business that was established in 1987 and founded by Garry Wisdom FNAVA. From a bedroom in Burns Avenue, Blackfen, the business has grown and now owns and occupies offices and warehousing in Station Road, Sidcup and is very likely one of Bexley’s best kept secrets! Originally the business specialised in On-Site Auctions, travelling around the UK to all areas North, South, East and West. Sales that have included entire factories of machinery, garages, TV recording studios and many more. Some of these On-Site sales attracted national and worldwide attention, such as the closure of Dormobile in 1993 and XSMG in 2013 where the entire factory contents were sold, which included the world’s fastest production powerboat, the XSR 48 (as seen on Top Gear, series 12). Since then, they have started to operate On-Line Auctions with huge success, including the sale of Vertu Luxury Mobile Phones in 2017, who were manufacturers of some of the most exclusive mobile phones in the world such as the Signature S 18ct gold phones. Additional closures and On-Line sales include F1 Modular Building Fabricators (Wales), Nationwide Body Repair Workshop (Oxford), Luxury Gyms (London), Classic & Prestige Car Collection (Swanley), all of which are complimented by regular On-Line auctions held in Sidcup. Unlike many auction companies, G J Wisdom do not accept private entries, therefore, only offering assets by order High Court Enforcement, Liquidations (Insolvency Practitioners), Finance Companies, Landlord’s and HM Revenue & Customs. The regular On-Line sales offer a large range of commercial goods including catering, vehicles, vans, plant, machinery, computers, laptops, printers IT and mobile phones and retail stock, together with more luxury goods auctions of cars, jewellery, artworks, designer clothing, furniture and more. To put it plainly - if you can imagine it, it’s very likely G J Wisdom & Co have sold it! All of their auctions and sales are available via their website and if you would like to join their mailing list for future updates and notifications, you can also do this on the website. www.GJWisdom.co.uk @bexleylife

Work begins on new cinema and library in Sidcup The brand new library, cinema and residential development in Sidcup will start to take shape from last month. Locally-based contractors Neilcott arrived at the site at 106 High Street recently to start work on the exciting new project. The exciting project on the site of the old Blockbuster store is due to complete in April 2022. Along with a new community cinema, library, nine new apartments designed by award winning architects DRDH will be part of the new construction. Cultural infrastructure developer Really Local Group will fit out and run the independent cinema that when finished will include 3 screens, a café/bar area and flexible event space. During the works the footpath that runs along the Elm Road site will close with footpath diversion signs in place while the hoarding works are carried out. Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Growth, Cllr Louie French commented: “I’m delighted to see this exciting project moving forward to the construction phase. With Neilcott and architectural firm DRDH on board, we can look forward to the addition of another buzzing venue to Sidcup, which will deliver more cultural entertainment and activities for local people to enjoy, new quality homes and a boost to our local economy.” Cabinet Member for Places, Cllr Peter Craske added: “During the ongoing pandemic, so many of us are looking forward to brighter days where we can visit our great local attractions and take part in community activities. This new library and cinema in Sidcup will be welcome news for many and something we can all look forward to in 2022. It will be great to see the old site of Blockbuster put to good use and serve the local community once again. I know our amazing library staff will do a fantastic job of running the library and can’t wait to see the range of services, events and activities it will bring to Sidcup.” Preston Benson, Founder of Really Local Group commented: “After three years of meticulous planning and preparation, we are delighted that the London Borough of Bexley has ‘pressed play’ on the construction of the new cinema and Sidcup library. We look forward to working with the council and library in the coming months to finalise our exciting offer, which will include film, music and other cultural activities for the residents of Sidcup to enjoy for years to come!” www.bexley.gov.uk

C2E consultation on

proposals to improve transport links

The C2E Partnership is consulting on proposals for improved, fast public transport services connecting Ebbsfleet, Dartford, Slade Green, Erith and Belvedere with Abbey Wood. The proposals would provide faster connections into London and to other parts of Kent. They would make journeys by public transport quicker and more attractive and reduce the need for trips by car. Cllr Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council said: “The C2E Partnership are at a stage where they would like to know residents’ views about five potential options. “Three of the options are for extending the Elizabeth Line from its current planned terminus at Abbey Wood towards Dartford and Ebbsfleet. One is to improve existing rail services to connect into the Elizabeth Line at Abbey Wood and one is to provide a new bus rapid transit, building on the Fastrack network in Kent. “By giving their views, residents can influence which options are taken forward for further development. So I encourage everyone to have their say by visiting the consultation link before it closes on 25 February.” Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE, Leader of the London Borough of Bexley and Chairman of the C2E Partnership commented: “This is a really important opportunity for residents and businesses to give their views on how important improved public transport links are to them. While there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment on the future of public transport, we know that better links will be fundamental to our plans to bring forward new high quality homes and jobs which can be accessed in safe, sustainable ways”. “By responding to this consultation, residents and businesses can demonstrate to Government how important new public transport links are to the future of this area”. Full details on the options can be found at: https://abbeywood2ebbsfleet.com/

Greenwich Theatre constantly adapting with the times... by James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre. The history of theatre is, in many ways, a history of innovation. From the courtly masques at the time of Elizabeth I with their elaborate mechanical creations allowing characters to fly and mythical creatures to come to life, to the show-stopping stage magic of contemporary shows like Ghost or Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, theatre is constantly evolving to find new ways to tell stories. The last twelve months have yet again proved theatre’s ability to rise to the challenge of working in new ways. In my last column I wrote about the challenges of making socially distanced theatre, with actors having to stay two metres apart and unable to touch the same props or items of set. Now, with the lockdown continuing and our Christmas show on hold, we are in the midst of a wide ranging online season of shows. One of the many challenges to presenting theatre online is the sheer volume of competition out there. If you are sitting down on your sofa to watch something you might choose a streamed show but you might also choose to watch something on TV, on Netflix, Sky or Disney+, and there’s no way that theatre can match

the production values of some of those big shows. We can’t have audiences in the same space as performers - historically one of the cornerstones of live theatre - and we can’t compete in production values, but what we can do is enable audience interaction. At the heart of our online season is our own new interactive show for children - Sir Willoughby’s Challenge. Performed by cast members from our full production of The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase, the show is like an escape room challenge for children. One of the characters is trapped in an old house and the young audience members, guided by other characters, have to help her escape by solving a series of clues. They direct the characters around the house, hide from the villain, unpick the riddles - all from the comfort of their own home and all on zoom. We are also presenting a second ‘choose your own adventure’ style show for children to enjoy at home - The Anarchist’s Mobile Library - but this is an audio adventure. Played on any device that can stream - a computer, phone or tablet - the show takes the listener into a whole series of fantastical worlds, which they can choose themselves, and guides them on a range of adventures with regular opportunities for them to stop and change the narrative. At the end of the month we have the online debut of the acclaimed improv troupe Notflix - and in the spirit of innovation we are now working out exactly how an audience will be able to shout out their suggestions to enable the group to improvise a brand new musical show live on stage and streamed to people’s homes. These are just a few of the online events scheduled this season, which also includes our own online premiere of Caryl Churchill’s astonishing satire on the business of charity - The After-Dinner Joke - performed by a cast of over 50 emerging professional actors. Sometime in 2021 theatres will be open again and playing to full houses, but we won’t be going back - we will be moving forwards, taking the lessons we have all learnt during this challenging period and continuing to evolve the ways in which we can reach out and entertain our audiences. London Resort theme park, Swanscombe Peninsula, moves to examination phase The proposed multi-billion pound theme park plan will be examined during a public inquiry after inspectors accepted the latest stage of the application. The London Resort, which is planned for the Swanscombe Peninsula between Gravesend and Dartford, is now set to be examined by the Planning Inspectorate to decide whether planning permission will be granted. Housing and communities secretary Robert Jenrick has accepted the 25,000 page application submitted to the Inspectorate allowing an inquiry to take place on whether to grant a Development Consent Order (DCO). The £2.5bn scheme has already been accepted as being a nationally significant infrastructure project and a DCO is required to allow building to begin. Planning inspectors last night published the confirmation moving the proposals into the next stage of the process, which is expected to take between a year and eighteen months. London Resort Company Holdings chief executive PY Gerbeau said: "It’s taken an enormous effort from everyone involved to get to where we are today. "I want to thank the home team, our investor, our partners and people who supported us for their dedication and incredible commitment. “We have always said our ambition is to build much more than just a theme park. It will be a beacon of world class entertainment and experiences within a world-leading sustainable environment. "We still have a long way to go and we are very much looking forward to working with the Planning Inspectorate over the coming months. "But, from where we were, less than eighteen months ago, today is a game changer and a very special day to celebrate.” It is the first phase in a lengthy planning process which means the plans will be scrutinised by government inspectors at the Planning Inspectorate and is also likely to include public hearings. Kathryn Dunne, the PINS lead for national infrastructure and environment, wrote to London Resort representatives confirming Mr Jenrick's decision. www.londonresort.info

If you’re a young person looking to start their career in 2021, or an employer interested in giving a young person a start in your industry, at look not why apprenticeships? Bexley is hosting an online apprenticeship information event on the evening of Monday 8th February. As well as information on apprenticeships, current opportunities and local apprenticeship training providers the event includes live workshops specially tailored for young people, parents, carers and employers. The workshops explain what an apprenticeship is and its benefits and how to find and apply for apprenticeship opportunities. Those attending can also send in any questions for the presenters. The session tailored for employers covers the benefits apprentices can bring, how to recruit an apprentice and how to find an apprenticeship training provider. You can book onto the live workshops at www.bexley.gov.uk/apprenticeshipevent Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor John Fuller said: “In a recent survey, the average young person in Bexley rated their knowledge of apprenticeships at 5 out of 10. While we are not able to hold our annual apprenticeship event at the Civic Offices as usual due to the ongoing pandemic, we still want to provide an opportunity for young people to find out about the many fantastic opportunities available in Bexley. “This event aims to help people improve their knowledge, so they can confidently search for and apply for an apprenticeship. Bexley has had the highest number of under 19 apprentice starts in London. The 2019/20 academic year saw 410 new apprentices start their chosen career path. We hope this continues, so if you’re thinking of starting an apprenticeship in September or want to see how an apprentice can benefit your business, be sure to book your place.” www.bexley.gov.uk
