New AMC simulation facility will boost safety at sea Sydney is now home to state-of-the-art maritime training simulators following the establishment of a new facility in Darling Harbour by AMC Search, the training and consultancy division of the Australian Maritime College (AMC). Training simulators are as vital for Australia’s mariners as they are for its aviators, providing familiarisation and emergency training that helps keep our tens of thousands of maritime workers - and the billions of dollars of goods they transport- safe at sea. Unique within the State, the new facility is innovatively linked to the National Centre for Maritime Simulation in Tasmania and combines replica ship and vessel communications equipment with highly realistic ocean, coast and port backdrops for immersive maritime training. AMC Principal Michael van Balen said the new Sydney facility would boost safety in the maritime industry by making simulated training accessible to more people. “Familiarisation with equipment and processes as well as the ability to practise emergency situations in a safe but realistic environment are key to keeping people safe at sea,” Mr van Balen said. “Our new Maritime Simulations Unit aims to enhance maritime safety across NSW and the rest of Australia by extending the reach of the pedagogical expertise and simulation software developed over decades at the AMC in Tasmania to organisations in the important maritime hub of Sydney.” The Maritime Simulations Unit includes the latest Kongsberg and Transas simulation solutions for training in vessel navigation, vessel traffic services (like air traffic control) and emergency and distress calls. It also provides access to an extensive library of vessel and port models developed in-house at AMC and previously only available in Tasmania. www.utas.edu.au

UK Port of Dover wins ESPO Award

The Port of Dover on the UK’s South Coast, has been awarded the ESPO Award 2019 in recognition of its successful strategy to reach out to the local community and to directly communicate with the port citizens.

Sustainability a priority for Port of New York Sustainability is a top priority in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s proposed US$3.4bn 2020 operating expense budget. Over US$330m is provided to support sustainability and resiliency efforts that reduce the port’s environmental impact and enhance the resiliency of its facilities. To achieve the port’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals, US$10m in capital spending is provided for electric vehicle charging infrastructure projects across the facilities. Port authority executive director, Rick Cotton, said: “This proposed budget will support rapid, demonstrable progress to achieve our priority objectives.” Another US$11m in operating expense funds are provided to convert the port’s light duty and airport shuttle bus fleet to all-electric, implement an electric cargo handling equipment demonstration project at Port Elizabeth, further efforts with the port’s truck replacement programme and support the Ocean-Going Clean Vessel Incentive programme. To reduce port authority energy consumption, four large energy efficiency projects are underway across all facilities, with nine additional projects under development. Also included in the budget is US$787m to provide world-class safety and security at port authority facilities, to upgrade cybersecurity initiatives and to enhance emergency operations. www.panynj.gov

The Port of Dover was chosen by judges of the awards for its project, ‘Transparen-SEA (Socially Engaged Accountability)’, which aims to create a comprehensive and meaningful programme of consultative and social community engagement events alongside the cultivation of an internal network of port ambassadors whose advocacy ultimately permeates back into the local community where many live. This was all supported with a social media overlay that connects directly with the community and reinforces the aims of the project. Chairman of the Jury, Dimitrios Theologitis, commented: “The Jury was impressed by Port of Dover’s strategy which is centred around campaigns on all media, electronic and others, leaflets, consultations, forums, workshops, sports events. But the most important ingredient of this successful strategy is giving back to the community, be it financial participation in charities and

community groups, making the installations available to the public for events, or foreseeing spaces and buildings open to the public.” “The project has not just been focused on one particular aspect of engagement, it has been a ‘wholesale immersion’ in the community and the community in the port”, said an ESPO spokesperson. It stressed that what is equally important is that the social media has not just been a faceless arm’s length engagement tool, but has been used to create the end result of much more face to face engagement. This has enabled members of the port community and members of the local community to recognise each other, and do so as part of the same overall community, importantly all buying in to the same shared vision and giving everyone a sense of ownership of that process. The ESPO Award 2019 saw four projects from Port of Dover, Dublin Port Company, Ports of Stockholm and Union des Ports de France (UPF) compete for the prize. www.doverport.co.uk

New fire rescue vessels from Metal Shark US Shipbuilder Metal Shark is significantly expanding its presence in the fireboat market with a diverse range of fireboats currently in production for multiple customers. Most notably, the company has announced a custom “70 Defiant” fireboat to be built for Canaveral Fire Rescue in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The new Canaveral fireboat is a 70’ x 22’ welded aluminium monohull pilothouse vessel designed by Metal Shark’s in-house engineering team utilizing a military-proven hull form. The vessel features a specialized layout designed for firefighters and optimized to enhance the Department’s operational readiness across the full spectrum of response scenarios. “The 70 Defiant is the result of the latest thinking in fireboat design and will provide a significant capability boost for Canaveral Fire,” said Dean Jones, Metal Shark’s vice president of sales for law enforcement, fire rescue, and specialty markets. “From the selection and integration of firefighting systems to the layout of the vessel’s fire control center, operator input was vital and significantly influenced the vessel’s configuration. Heavy emphasis was placed on accessibility and overall ease of use, and the result is a purposebuilt fire fighting machine with next-level capabilities and a crew-friendly layout that fire fighters will love.” The vessel’s design incorporates a positive-pressure Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high-yield Explosive (CBRNE) system to provide crew protection during disaster response scenarios. A complete suite of electronics including an M400XR FLIR thermal imaging system with fire fighting software will provide next-level situational awareness. Client-driven firefighting particulars include twin Darley fire pumps rated at 3,000 GPM each feeding two 2,000 GPM remote operated bow monitors, a 5,000 GPM remote operated rooftop monitor, two 1,250 GPM manually operated aft deck monitors, two aft deck risers with dual 2.5” hand line connections, and dual 5” Storz hydrant outlets. The vessel is equipped with a 500-gallon foam tank with gravity fast feed capability and integrated Purple K system. Total expected flow rate is in excess of 8,500 GPM. Metal Shark offers the 70 Defiant with a wide range of propulsion packages enabling the vessel to achieve top speeds of 45+ knots. Canaveral’s vessel will be powered by quad 800-horsepower Man diesel engines mated to quad Hamilton water jets. This configuration will deliver a cruise speed in the 30-knot range and a top speed of 35 knots. The Canaveral order comes amid a significant expansion by Metal Shark into the U.S. fireboat market. In April, Metal Shark announced that it had been selected to build the next generation of fireboats for the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue department, with a multiboat order for 50’ Defiant-class pilothouse fireboats currently in production. The new Miami-Dade fireboats are being built alongside a diverse assortment of custom fireboats for other operators including 27’, 29’, 32’, and 38’ pilothouse vessels as well as 23’ and 26’ center console vessels. In addition to Canaveral and Miami-Dade, notable new and recent Metal Shark fireboat customers include Captiva Fire Department (Florida), City of Punta Gorda Fire Department (Florida), Fairfax County Fire Rescue (Virginia), Grand Isle Volunteer Fire Department (Louisiana), Greater Naples Fire Department (Florida), Harrods Creek Fire Department (Kentucky), Miami Beach Fire Department (Florida), Newport News Fire Department (Virginia), South Bowers Volunteer Fire Department (Delaware), St. Petersburg Beach Fire Department (Florida), and West Manatee Fire and Rescue (Florida). “Metal Shark is winning new fire rescue customers with a broad portfolio of fully custom fireboat platforms that allow firefighters to respond faster and do their jobs more safely,” said Metal Shark’s CEO Chris Allard. “We welcome all fire rescue agencies to see for themselves the many advantages our proven fireboats have to offer.” Metal Shark is a diversified shipbuilder specializing in the design and construction of welded aluminium and steel vessels from 16’ to over 300’ for defence, law enforcement, and commercial operators. SMS Group completes interior refits The SMS Group has completed two pieces of major interior outfit work for Holland America Line in the Caribbean and Canada. SMS has an enviable reputation as specialists in ship repair, marine engineering and major fabrication projects in the Commercial Marine, Defence and Superyachts sectors. The business also operates, in-house, a diving and subsurface marine engineering division. Since 2018 the company has developed a ‘boutique’ interior outfit division focusing on both Cruise and Commercial tonnage. This division, led by industry veteran Dan Lockyer is currently thriving. In respect to the recent wins Dan commented: “The experience and expertise within my team is exceptional. Completing these first two, major projects, on time and on budget is a tremendous credit to both my colleagues and our customer alike. We’re extremely grateful.” He added: “The Noordam refit, undertaken in the Seaspan yard in Victoria, Canada, was a great success. We had over 20 men onsite, with two project managers, and completed works in 742 cabins. “The Volendam was similar, although a slightly smaller project. The works were undertaken in Freeport, Grand Bahamas. It featured 16 men, a project manager, and 196 suites. Both projects enjoyed several work streams.” In conclusion Dan said: “The refits ran like clockwork for two simple seasons, and these reasons are what sets us apart in the market. “One, our ethos is one of ‘ownership’ and ‘responsibility’. We’re a small team and our project managers own the job from start to finish. “And two, we genuinely care. We’re not a big corporate. Unmanned Survey Solutions receive award

Unmanned Survey Solutions, a company that designs, builds and operates Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV’s) for the survey industry, has won the Cornwall Manufacturing Group Innovation/Improvement Project of the Year Award 2019. James Williams, Director at Unmanned Survey Solutions, said: “We are over the moon to win this award with our Inception Class Unmanned Surface Vessel. The team here have worked extremely hard to bring this innovative USV product to international markets. New business flows into Port of Sunderalnd A UK manufacturer is set to invest millions and create scores of new manufacturing and distribution jobs with the opening of a new purpose-built terminal at Port of Sunderland. Brineflow Limited, a leading manufacturer of liquid nitrogen fertilisers, has been granted permission by Sunderland City Council to construct a new base at the port with an initial capacity of handling 50,000 tonnes per year. The hub will see Brineflow import and store liquid fertiliser for the agricultural industry in the North East and the Borders, breathing new commercial life into disused land at Youngs Quay in the port. The Great Yarmouth-headquartered company identified Port of Sunderland as a potential site due to its strategic location on the East Coast with proximity to strategic suppliers in the Baltic States and for larger cargoes trans-shipped in Rotterdam and other European ports. John Fuller OBE, Chairman of Brineflow, said: “The Liquid fertiliser market is growing fast as farms increase in size and become more mechanised. “Liquid fertilisers have many environmental advantages compared with the solid fertilisers traditionally used in the UK partly because they do away with the single-use plastic fertiliser bags. “They are safer to use and store and farmers can apply even in windy conditions which helps them manage their crops in the most timely manner. Another key influencer in Brineflow’s decision to invest in Port of Sunderland was the improved transport links connecting the port to the region’s major road networks, such as the A19 and the A1. The opening of the Northern Spire bridge – coupled with the improvement of surrounding roads - has significantly improved road connectivity to the multi-modal hub and has led to a rise in the number of firms exporting and importing goods via the port over the last 12 months. Fuller added: “Sunderland is ideally located to complement our existing operations in the South and East of the country. Port of Sunderland is able to handle the most common size of tanker ships found in European waters and is best placed to help us develop the rapidly expanding market for liquid nitrogen fertilisers in the North East and the Borders with renewed road infrastructure and a significant number of experienced local hauliers.” The plans were green-lit by Sunderland City Council yesterday [28 Oct] and Brineflow expects construction to start in the winter, with the site being fully operational by summer 2020. Port of Sunderland director, Matthew Hunt, said: “Port of Sunderland is a fantastic location for businesses that are looking for excellent connectivity and handling capabilities, and we’re seeing the market respond to that, with a number of enquiries from businesses looking to establish a base on our estate. “The traction that the port is gathering, and the continued investment being made by the council in both the port estate and the wider city, has provided a major boost to us. Add to that the ongoing work at the £400m International Advanced Manufacturing Park and the redevelopment of the Vaux site, and it’s proving to be a very exciting time for the city and everyone involved with it.” www.portofsunderland.org.uk

Fast delivery of Damen’s first customised Cutter Suction Dredger to Brazil Damen has just shipped a fully customised Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 350, to Brazil. The standard dredger was adapted to meet Brazilian Naval requirements and received additional options as per customer request. Damen has carried out the job very quickly; from contract signature to departure from the Port of Antwerp in just under four months. The CSD350 is the first stationary dredger Damen has delivered to Brazil. Many countries – Brazil not being an exception – have their own regulations for outfitting vessels. Therefore the standard suction dredger from stock has been adapted accordingly. Moreover, the customer, Construtora Vale Verde, ordered a number of options. These include a non-return valve in the discharge pipe line, a wedge piece for shallow water dredging, Damen remote monitoring system as well as a navigation package for maximising safety on the job. The CSD350 has been designed to dredge inland waters at a dredging depth between -1 m and -9 m water depth. It is fitted out with a 55 kW cutter head for breaking up compacted soils, and the in-board dredge pump is powered by a 447 kW diesel engine. For transport purposes, the dredger can be fully dismounted – quite practical considering that its first dredge job will be located some 500 km from its port of arrival, Vitoria. The dredger left Damen Dredging Equipment in Nijkerk, the Netherlands on five trucks – one for the main pontoon, one for both side pontoons and spuds together, one for the suction ladder and one for the separate container shipping, the operating cabin and various smaller items such as the navigation mast. The dredger arrived in Brazil at the end of October, where it will be swiftly assembled by Damen, Vale Verde and local agent Endratech engineers, thus demonstrating clearly the benefits of Damen’s philosophy of standardisation. With products being built in series – often for stock – Damen is able to guarantee the fastest possible delivery times for proven solutions. www.damen.com

Two Metal Shark Pilot Boats now at Port of New Orleans

Metal Shark has delivered two new pilot boats to New Orleans-based operator Belle Chasse Marine Transportation, LLC (BCMT). Designed in-house by Metal Shark and built at the company’s Jeanerette, Louisiana production facility, “Jet 1” and “Jet 2” are 45-foot welded aluminium Defiant-class monohull pilothouse vessels featuring an extensively proven hull design. The vessels feature a unique deck arrangement designed for pilots and customized to meet BCMT’s specific requirements. Both vessels were recently delivered and are now operating on the Mississippi River, providing service to BCMT’s Port of New Orleans clients. Like all of Metal Shark’s Defiant-class pilot boats, the climate-controlled pilothouses of BCMT’s new vessels feature Metal Shark’s signature “Pillarless Glass” for significantly improved visibility, in a reverse-raked arrangement developed specifically for pilot operations. Visibility is further augmented by the vessel’s elevated, centreline helm position, and large overhead skylights that provide upward visibility while approaching and operating alongside moving ships. Fully flush non-skid decks allow for unimpeded access around the vessel, and hand rails have been placed within easy reach of all crew, inside the cabin and outside on deck, at all times. Low-level LED pathway lighting enhances safety during nighttime operation. The vessel’s large, functional swim platform, plus easily accessible Jason’s Cradle, dive ladder, and throwable life rings, are intended to assure quick and safe crew retrieval in the event of a man overboard situation. Designed in close collaboration with the client, the new vessels feature a unique rooftop pilot boarding arrangement with retractable platforms allowing for both port and starboard pilot boardings. Lower forward port and starboard platforms and integrated foredeck stairwell, all with carefully-placed grab rails, allow for safe and secure transfer in the widest possible range of scenarios. Powered by twin Cummins Marine QSM11 diesel engines coupled with Hamilton HJ322 waterjets, Jet 1 and Jet 2 demonstrate pinpoint manoeuvrability while delivering a cruise speed in excess of 30 knots and a top speed in the 40 knot range. A urethane-sheathed, closed-cell foam Wing collar provides durable and resilient fendering. Shock-mitigating seating has been provided for a crew of five, and anti-fatigue floor covering has been provided in the pilothouse and the belowdecks crew spaces. Additional features include a galley, enclosed head compartment, v-berth, and large walk-in mid-cabin storage compartment. “By combining our military-proven hull designs with modern, crew-friendly features, we are delivering smarter and more user-friendly pilot boats that simply work better than the industry’s legacy product offerings,” said Metal Shark’s CEO Chris Allard. “We continue to task ourselves to deliver improved platforms that deliver improved comfort, efficiency, reliability, and safety to our customers.” www.metalsharkboats.com.

Forecasting service to better manage environmental impacts of dredging

Dredging companies are able to better plan their schedules in advance thanks to HR Wallingford’s new service which can provide improved forecasting of sediment plumes caused by dredging. The service enables dredging contractors to improve their ‘adaptive management’ of dredging works thereby helping to ensure that environmental objectives are hit. The response-based forecasting model has already been used successfully at Doha Port in its preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

HR Wallingford has developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of a new sediment plume forecasting service to help dredging companies meet environmental requirements. The service predicts sediment dispersion several days in advance, enabling contractors to better plan their dredging schedules. “Our service is unique because of the complexity of the inputs that it can handle, for example the service combines complex hydrodynamic modelling and meteorological forecasts with various details input about the dredging activities,” said Dr Jeremy Spearman, Technical Director at HR Wallingford. By being able to better forecast dredged plumes, the contractor can be more confident that work will not need to be unexpectedly stopped or re-located because of unanticipated risks to the environment. The new service is also capable of providing additional re-assurance to regulators that the best management tools available are being applied to project works. “At DEME we continuously invest in technology to meet and exceed environmental requirements,” said Alberto Mino, DEME Area Manager Middle East Gulf South. “The HR Wallingford Forecast Service has enabled us to minimise the impact of our dredging activities on the environment, and allowed us to demonstrate our commitment to meeting regulations to the Ministry of Environment.” The new service offered by HR Wallingford is a natural extension of its previous extensive work in modelling dredged plumes. The organisation has been using sediment dispersion modelling to assess the likely effects of dredge sediment plumes for over 25 years in support of ports and harbour development planning and design. For example, advice is routinely given for planning purposes on the best season to dredge, or to look at which sort or dredging would be most suitable for a certain area at a certain time of year. The new forecast service uses a calibrated TELEMAC 3D hydrodynamic flow model to forecast the associated currents taking into account predicted tidal and meteorological effects. These are then encapsulated into the SEDPLUME model combined with dredging information to model the dispersion of the sediment plume. HR Wallingford issues a forecast report to the contractor showing the spatial and temporal variation of the multiple plumes generated by different plant dredging and disposing over the forecast period. The forecast is updated every three days. In developing this new offering, HR Wallingford has been able to draw on its experience from its other response based coastal and marine forecasting services. It uses its numerical forecasting models, for example, to predict wave overtopping, coastal erosion, or to forecast vessel motions of ships at berth and the associated mooring forces under certain meteorological conditions. www.hrwallingford.com

Concordia Damen wins Ship of the Year

Inland shipping vessel Sendo Liner, built by Concordia Damen, has won the prestigious KNVTS Ship of the Year 2019 Maritime Award. The award jury highlighted the vessel’s ‘future-proof’ propulsion configuration (diesel-electric supplemented with a battery pack) as a crucial factor in selecting the Sendo Liner as winner. The award was presented at the 2019 Maritime Awards Gala. The Sendo Liner is an inland shipping container ship with dimensions 110 x 11.45 x 3.2 m (LxWxT). It was designed by Concordia Damen in close collaboration with its client, and owner of the vessel, Sendo Shipping. During the design of the ship, Concordia Damen and Sendo Shipping paid extensive attention to making the ship as efficient, economical and clean as possible in its task of container transport on inland waterways. The design brief also included the requirement to make the vessel future-proof. Looking at these characteristics in turn, the Sendo Liner has an optimised layout that has increased its loading capacity by 8% relative to a vessel of similar size. Moreover, the vessel has an innovative ballast system which allows it to increase its air draft when it passes fully loaded under bridges. The vessel’s propulsion set-up deserves attention; it is diesel-electric backed up with a large battery pack that can be recharged via a shore connection. Compared to similar inland shipping vessels, it is this propulsion configuration in addition to the increased cargo volume and reduced hull resistance that represents a major step forward in terms of fuel efficiency. Indeed, these three factors combined mean that the Sendo Liner achieves a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions per container transported. On the subject of ‘future-proofing’, Concordia Damen and Sendo Shipping designed the propulsion system so that it will be possible to switch energy sources in a relatively simple manner in the future and to maximise load capacity. This means that the Sendo Liner will be a leader in low-emission operations throughout its entire lifespan. “We are extremely proud that the Sendo Liner has won the KNVTS Ship of the Year 2019 award. Polar condition davits

Vestdavit recently secured an order to supply three new Norwegian Coast Guard vessels with davits equipped for polar conditions, in a project which also calls for installation of a deck-mounted transfer system for rapid deployment.

The ships are being built by Vard Group within the P6615 project to replace Nordkappclass ships with a new generation of search-and-rescue, surveillance, and oil recovery vessels. The 136m length newbuildings have been developed for worldwide operations including arctic areas and will feature ice-strengthened hulls and ice-class notation on their delivery from Vard Langsten, Norway, one apiece in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The vessels will come complete with one telescopic TBD-10000L davit system plus two PLR-5003KV units, built to Vestdavit standards for minimum availability of 330 days a year up to upper Sea State 5, based on actual North Sea conditions 1958-2018. In line with the areas of operation envisaged, the davits will be winterized for full functionality in temperatures as low as -25%C, as required in the Polar Code. “This contract continues an unbroken run of davit system orders from the Norwegian Coast Guard but the project merits special attention as the customer continues to push forward davit performance requirements,” commented Bjørnar Dahle, Business Development Director, Vestdavit. The Vestdavit TDB -10000L is a hydraulically-operated 10T(SWL) single point telescopic davit suitable for handling auxiliary boats at hoisting and lowering speeds of 40m/min. Project specifications include a dynamic shock absorber system, Vestdavit’s constant tension solution and hydraulic boat-guiding arms. The Norwegian Coast Guard has also opted for a wagon-based boat transfer system operating on deck-mounted rails. This features a pair of wagons, or cradles, the solution includes elements of Vestdavit’s leading-edge and patent-protected MissionEase multi-boat transfer system - it can present two boats to the davit in quick succession for rapid deployment. The Vestdavit PLR-5003KV units also specified within the contract are A-frame, all-steel davits with a 5 ton SWL, which will feature Vestdavit’s wave-compensation system and shock absorber system. The solution will feature 50m/min lifting and lowering speeds. The units installed are designed to handle FRBs of up to 8.5m in length. The contract also includes telescopic painter booms to run parallel to the ship and pick up the painter line to keep auxiliary boats at a safe distance to the ship’s side, controlled from the boat launching operator’s station. www.vestdavit.no

JOINT AGREEMENT FOR NEW ROPE WINCH GEARBOXES Royal IHC and Liebherr have joined forces to develop special planetary plug-in gearboxes for rope winches to be installed on the world's largest and most powerful cutter suction dredger, the first to be powered by LNG. Liebherr’s gearboxes will be used on the 164m long and 44,180kW-strong Spartacus as well as other cutter suction dredgers. "For the Spartacus project, we chose Liebherr planetary gearboxes, because of the good experiences we already had with them," explained JaapJan de Koster, lead engineer at IHC. For the Spartacus, Liebherr and IHC developed an anchor winch with two high-torque plug-in gears (up to 1,500,000 Nm) and equipped these with axial play, in order to guard against any possible tensions in the steel structure. The multiple tooth mesh of the planetary gear stages provides the gears' very high-power density. The drum bearings in the transmission are designed specifically for use in winches to comply with high service life and maintenance-friendly operation requirements. Liebherr conducted a detailed heat calculation and supported IHC in choosing a suitable cooling option. "For a number of these winch drives, secondary controlled hydraulic motors were applied, which place high demands on the rest of the drive, such as an increased mass inertia. Discussion on Vietnam’s maritime future ahead of Asia Pacific Maritime 2020 Vietnam’s sea transport sector continues to achieve steady growth, with goods transported by the country’s fleet reaching more than 81 million tonnes in the first half of 2019, a year-on-year increase of 16 per cent. Statistics from Vietnam Maritime Administration also indicated that in the same period, Vietnam’s ports handled 308.8 million tonnes of goods, up 13 per cent year-on-year. Changing tides in the global economy could further fuel this growth. Striving to become a maritime powerhouse by 2030, Vietnam industry players are following global developments closely in order to thrive. To position the Southeast Asian nation for growth, Asia Pacific Maritime (APM) 2020 exhibition and conference organised a half-day Vietnam Maritime Event where local and regional speakers shed insights into issues impacting the Vietnam and global industries. Yeow Hui Leng, Group Project Director, APM said, “Vietnam has developed significantly over the past three decades and its economic outlook remains bright despite economic headwinds and global uncertainties. Rapid economic expansion has driven shipping demand. However, the country will need to stay atop of tightening regulations and modernise. The green agenda A major shake-up for shipping, the IMO (International Maritime Organization) 2020 Global Sulphur Cap will come into effect from January 2020, presenting a high technical requirement for shipowners. As this will undoubtedly raise operating and management costs due to increased fuel cost, major shipbuilding territories such as Japan, the European Union and USA, are seeking means to use liquefied fuel to reduce costs. This presents an opportune time for Vietnam to learn from global maritime players, while it relies on imports of the cleaner fuel in the meantime. Shedding light on methanol, Chris Chatterton, Chief Operating Officer of Methanol Institute said, “Methanol, unlike other alternative fuels, can really ‘move the needle’ with respect to meeting both the IMO2020 regulation and the carbon intensity reduction targets set by the IMO along several renewable or zero carbon production paths. Renewable Methanol can act as a long-term transition fuel, while as an efficient carrier of hydrogen, it can also power fuel cells, a future fuel which is deemed one of the most feasible in achieving a lower carbon approach to shipping.” About the sulphur cap’s impact on Asia, Simon Neo, Executive Director, SDE International said, “Asia is very much prepared for the IMO 2020 and all major ports have made suitably graded fuels available. In the lead up to the regulation’s implementation, we are seeing vessels in the region being fixed with scrubbers. However, major ports, apart from Japan, do not allow open loop scrubbers to operate within their territorial waters. And vessels using the closed loop or hybrid system will also face some problems with the disposal of the waste products produced by these scrubbers, because not many port states have announced their readiness to receive this waste for treatment and safe disposal.”

Solutions for Tomorrow: Digitalisation Though Vietnam’s shipping industry is poised for growth, many industry players remain beset with outdated maritime assets and limited access to capital, thereby hindering digitalisation. In light of this, the Vietnam Maritime Department issued an official call in late 2018 for Vietnamese maritime players and shipowners to accelerate the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. On this topic, Assistant Professor Okan Duru, Director of Maritime Studies, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) said, “Digitalisation is an inevitable investment for survival. If shipowners and operators cannot adapt to this transformation of Industry 4.0, they will be wiped out by Industry 5.0. Among various solutions of digitalisation, workplace automation and Ship 5.0 (embedded ship automation) will change the ecosystem dramatically. Tipping-point is not as close as perceived, but it is not that far.” About the state of Vietnam’s ships, Bui Văn Trung, Secretary General, Vietnam Shipowners’ Association commented, “Vietnam’s national fleet consists mostly of second-hand ships, many of which feature technologies of 15 years ago or older - this puts us at a disadvantage amid fierce competition from newer ships of foreign owners. While modernisation is a must to survive, it is also a grave problem for the shipping companies, chiefly because of low profitability in business and lack of development funds, especially from commercial sources. Partrac to supply buoys for Triton Knoll wind farm UK based, marine navigation equipment specialist Partrac recently won the contract to supply, install and maintain navigation and metocean equipment at Triton Knoll offshore wind farm, with construction due to begin shortly. Partrac will supply and install 12 navigation buoys to warn mariners of the location of the construction site as well as two metocean buoys that will supply environmental information to the construction and service crews. The Triton Knoll wind farm is located approximately 18 miles off the Lincolnshire coast, just to the east of the main shipping channel that leads into the Wash. When completed it will be one of the major North Sea wind farms with its 90 9.5MW turbines generating a total of 857MW. These will generate enough electricity to power more than 800,000 typical UK homes. The buoys will comprise five cardinal buoys that will marks the extremities of the construction site plus seven special buoys that will mark specific areas. The company will also supply, install and maintain two metocean buoys that are designed to collect information about offshore conditions and will supply information such as wave height, direction and frequency plus water temperature and current velocity and direction. Partrac will also supply the data link to facilitate the sharing of this metocean data which will aid in operational decision-making during the construction period. The metocean data will be used daily to help plan, inform and increase the safety of hundreds of heavy lifts and personnel transfers, plus boulder clearance, subsea and cable lay operations during the construction phase. Triton Knoll is owned by Innogy, J-Power and Kansai Electric Power. Simrad launches additions to Halo range

The HALO20+ and HALO20 radars are a pair of compact, pulse-compression units designed for smaller boats with particular application to small workboats such as harbour craft and RIBs. Both radars provide excellent detection with short-range performance, while the HALO20+ has the fastest rotation amongst all small boat radars which gives a rapid picture update making it suitable for high speed boats. The HALO20+ also has a longer detection range and can detect targets farther away than the HALO20. With its 20-inch radome, the HALO20+ is Simrad’s smallest pulse compression radar scanner yet, delivering a full 360-degree sweep every second. The MV Sigulu will connect Sigulu and Lolwe islands on Lake Victoria to Lugala mainland in Namayingo District and will be transported there for formal commissioning, according to Mr Herbert Mutyaba, the head of ferry services at Unra. “The vessel will carry up to 300 passengers, the biggest number so far on this lake, it’s going to be the first vessel to take vehicles to Lolwe Island; Lolwe Island is going to be opened up,” Mr Mutyaba said. The Danish firm, JGH Marine, was the contractor, while Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra) oversaw its works.

Engines and Propulsion Hydromaster Propulsion supplied the vessels three Azimuth thrusters and control system and selected Doosan diesel engines as the primary source of thruster power. 3 x Doosan MD196TI Engines (320Hp) including control panels and extended engine harness were installed. Although the ferry will be able to run on two while one is off - to offer continued service during maintenance of the other engine. The Doosan MD196TI, is a heavy duty marine diesel propulsion engine. An inline 6 cylinder 11 litre turbocharged and intercooled marine engine. This makes it suitable for a range of vessels including Fishing trawlers, Tug boats, Pushing vessels, Cargo boats, Freighters, Ferrys etc. The ferry took 10 months to be completed and was funded by a Ugandan government grant.

Other features of the ferry • A main deck, first tier deck, second tier deck and the wheel house; • The main deck will carry the largest number of passengers and cargo (including cars), the second tier deck will have an emergency health facility while the first tier deck is a limited space with seats, a restaurant and staircase down to the engine room; • The wheel house or bridge is the top most compartment in which the captain and his crew are located; • The ferry, which is made from marine grade steel, weighs 300 tonnes, is 42 metres long, 11 metres wide and 2.5 metres deep. Distribution network expansion for ZF Group German based technology group ZF is expanding its product distribution to important European markets. ZF will no longer solely supply transmissions to ADS van STIGT, but also rudder propellers, tunnel thrusters and steering systems. The company has been supplying powerful marine transmissions to its Dutch partner for more than 40 years. The deal will enable ADS van STIGT to supply comprehensive, system-integrated propulsion solutions for offshore applications, inland shipping, workboats, superyachts, and fishing boats. Rating system for hybrid diesel engines John Deere have been developing a new rating for hybrid vessels with diesel power to assist marine stakeholders meet hybrid emissions regulations. The company will release a PowerTech 6090SFM85 rating with a 242kW variable speed rating at 2000rpm. It will meet US Environmental Protection Agency Marine Tier 3 and International Maritime Organization Tier 2 emissions standards and will be certified to E3 propulsion test cycle for commercial applications used with variable pitch or electronically coupled propellers. To address the market-specific needs of inland waterway applications, John Deere will offer two marine generator drive ratings that are EU Stage V compliant on the PowerTech 4045TFM85 and 6068AFM85 models. The 4.5L rating will be 61kWm prime at 1500rpm and the 6.8L rating will be 117kWm prime at 1500rpm. Both prime ratings include a 10% overload capability and conform to ISO 8528 prime power. The 4.5L and 6.8L engines feature a water-cooled exhaust manifold and turbocharger. Both engines are type approved by the following Marine Classification Societies: ABS, BV, CCS, DNV-GL, and LR. The EU Stage V generator drive ratings below 130kW are anticipated to be available to order later this year, with production set to begin in early 2020. John Deere will release new emission label options for 50Hz generator drive ratings for the PowerTech 4045TFM85, 4045AFM85 and 6068AFM85 engines, which will comply with China Stage I marine emissions standards. Rolls-Royce and Sunseeker sign frame agreement for MTU engines Rolls-Royce and British luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker International have signed a new frame agreement for the supply of MTU yacht engines. The contract, signed during the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, runs until the end of 2022 and covers a total of over 90 MTU Series 2000 V10, V12 and V16 engines as well as V8 and V12 configurations of the Series 4000. The engines offer power outputs ranging between 1015 kW (1,380hp) and 2340 kW (3,182 hp). The engines will power a wide range of yacht models in the 25 meters (75ft+) category. An initial Sunseeker 161 yacht was presented at the boat show in Cannes and has already been sold. New propulsion technologies are also to be used, including an MTU hybrid engine for the Sunseeker 133. This modular propulsion system is being developed by Rolls-Royce in close collaboration with Sunseeker. “We are pleased to be entering into another frame agreement with Rolls-Royce. We aim to double our yacht portfolio over the next few years, and intend to include new technologies. Rolls-Royce is an excellent partner for this undertaking. Thunderstorm and lightening detection system for offshore wind safety A new thunderstorm and lightning detection system designed to make offshore wind farms safer will be tested in Scotland. Biral has been working closely with ORE Catapult to further develop its BTD350 thunderstorm and lightning detection system for offshore wind farms and is installing its technology for testing at the Catapult’s 7MW Levenmouth Demonstration Turbine in Fife. Hugo Aniksztejn, international sales specialist at Biral, commented: “Working with ORE Catapult has been invaluable in helping us better understand how the BTD-350 thunderstorm and lightning detection system can offer real-world safety benefits to the wind turbine sector. It can provide warnings of overhead lightning prior to the first lightning discharge and a false alarm rate that is almost zero. Designed for marine applications, where severe weather, salt water corrosion and platform vibration produce a challenging environment for environmental sensors, the BTD-350’s metalwork is corrosion-resistant stainless steel and aluminium, further protected by marine-grade paintwork. Damen delivers third Fast Crew Supplier 2710 to High Speed Transfers

The delivery of the third Fast Crew Supplier (FCS) 2710 bought by Swansea, UK-based High Speed Transfers has taken place at Damen Shipyards Antalya. Named HST Harri, she joins the HST Hudson, delivered in May 2018, and the HST Sofia, which was handed over in March this year. A fourth FCS 2710 for High Speed Transfers, to be named HST Euan, is currently nearing completion for delivery in December. The HST Harri is booked to start immediately on a five-year contract in the North Sea with wind farm operator MHI Vestas, where her duties will include delivering personnel and equipment to multiple sites. The FCS 2710 builds on the success of Damen’s highly successful FCS 2610, incorporating all the feedback and experience gained from the operations of its predecessor. While only one metre longer, it is capable of carrying 26 passengers, twice as many as the FCS 2610, and can operate in wave heights of more than two metres due to an extra metre of freeboard. Additional features include more flexibility, more tank capacity, greater deck space, increased comfort and more accommodation. Both the Harri and the Euan recently had the pleasure of a visit by the Welsh national rugby team, which was holding a ten-day, hot weather training camp near Antalya. Fourteen members of the squad joined the vessels at the yard and were given a tour of the Harri as she lay alongside the dock. “We are thrilled to see a third FCS 2710 beginning operations and fourth one just a few months away,” says Arjen van Elk, Damen sales manager for the UK and Ireland. “Tom Nevin and his colleagues at HST have been great ambassadors for the new class and really demonstrated its capabilities and efficiency in both the North and Black seas to the offshore renewable and oil & gas sectors.” Tom Nevin, CEO of HST, added, “The HST family are delighted to have taken delivery of HST Harri and we look forward to the voyage from Turkey to the North Sea. Wight Shipyard Co to build revolutionary new hybrid crew transfer vessel

One of the UK’s leading aluminium vessel builders Wight Shipyard Co have been contracted to build the world’s first hybrid surface effect crew transfer vessel, which will service the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore windfarms located 23 kilometres off the Dutch coast. WSC was chosen to build the vessel by CWind because of its reputation for superior build quality and track record of delivery coupled with the unique ability of working with new designs and concepts, including hybrid vessels that reduce carbon emissions. “We have built a reputation in the fast ferry arena and commercial marine sector,” said Peter Morton, CEO WSC. “But this a world first, building a hybrid SES for crew transfer. Building greener vessels has been an integral focus for some time now so we are well placed to lead this step change in Crew Transfer Vessels.”

First in production WSC will manage the build project from its development stage right through to delivery. The vessel will be a game-changer for the industry because of its ability to handle 2m significant wave height during technician transfer in heavy seas. At the same time, it will decrease fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Hybrid SES propulsion engine will deliver sprint speed and extreme bollard push from its 1,600 kW installed diesel engines, which can be battery boosted up to 1,500 kW. Significant fuel savings will be achieved through balancing engine and inefficient low engine power running hours, with battery drive modes including windfarm standby and low speed/harbour operations. This will lead to an engine operating hour reduction of 50% during windfarm battery standby. Martyn Drye, Director of Engineering at CWind said, “We embarked on the design of this revolutionary project last year, which utilises new technology to meet industry drivers for improved performance and reductions in carbon emissions. SES design The Hybrid SES crew transfer vessel was developed in partnership with the operator CWind and ESNA, a ship design company based in Kristiansand, Norway, which specialises in commercially competitive vessels with surface effect technology to deliver significant carbon reductions. Consisting of two catamaran hulls with the area between the hulls closed, by flexible reinforced rubber fingers in the bow and an inflated rubber bag in the stern. Centrifugal fans blow air into this enclosed space, providing an air cushion that supports up to 80% of the vessel weight. The remaining 20% is supported by hull buoyancy. This allows for higher vessel speed because the hull resistance is significantly decreased. It also reduces motion owing to less wave contact. In addition, the air cushion acts as a large shock absorber, improving the seakeeping and reducing seasickness. The overall design and build, with 24 passenger capacity, will pay particular attention to technician and crew health, safety and comfort, thus delivering the workforce in the best possible work-ready condition. Naval architect and co-founder of ESNA, Trygve H. Espeland, said “The vessel design will accommodate further developments in hybrid propulsion and battery technology, ensuring it has the capability of being developed into a totally carbon-free solution in the future. Wight Shipyard Co was the obvious partner for the build because of its solid reputation for both quality timely builds and experience bringing a new concept hybrid vessel to market”.

Charter agreement CWind’s long-term charter contract agreement with Ørsted, which operates the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore windfarms, will start in mid-2020. The agreement will cover an initial three-year firm charter with options available for a further two years. The new CWind Hybrid SES will enable Ørsted to not only deliver and service windfarms efficiently through reduced transit times, but support Ørsted’s green energy ambition. The Hybrid SES crew transfer vessel will operate from the Dutch port of Vlissingen to Borssele 1 and 2, located 23km from the Dutch coast in the North Sea.

Solid reputation WSC has focused on designing and building lighter weight fast ferries with the subsequent benefit of lower fuel burn – with previous builds including Red Funnel’s Redjet 6 and 7, three vessels for MBNA Thames Clippers and the first two passenger ferries built outside of the United States for Mexican operator Ultramar. Also using its build expertise to spearhead newbuild hybrid vessels setting new industry standards in the sector. UK Rampion Wind Farm could triple in size The Crown Estate website is suggesting that the Rampion wind farm could be as much as twothirds longer than it is currently on the western side. At the moment Rampion has 116 turbines which generate a maximum of 400 megawatts of energy, which is enough electricity to supply almost 347,000 homes a year, equivalent to around half the homes in the county of Sussex. A spokesman for Rampion explained that recently, the Crown Estate announced a number of extension projects for possible future wind farm development off the coast of England and Wales. They said: “We’re pleased that an extension ‘area of search’, next to the existing Rampion Wind Farm, has been confirmed as potentially suitable. “We’re at an early stage of exploring the potential for development through environmental and engineering work and intend to engage with stakeholders more on this next year.” They added that any extension would be ‘subject to the same rigorous planning and consultation processes as previously undertaken’, and during which time they ‘would work closely with both the community and local stakeholders before any proposal is submitted’. The wind farm was built 13km off the Sussex coast by E.ON, Canadian energy infrastructure company Enbridge and a consortium comprising the Green Investment Group, Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 5 and the Universities Superannuation Scheme. A second Damen FCS 2610 for MMS Offshore MMS Offshore Renewable Services Ltd has taken delivery of a Fast Crew Supplier (FCS) 2610 from Damen Shipyards Group. The new vessel - to be called MMS Superior - will be deployed in a variety of roles in the offshore renewables, oil & gas and marine civil engineering sectors. MMS Offshore Marine Manager Nick Brambles and Damen UK’s Sales Manager Frederik van der Linde

MMS Offshore Renewable Services is located on the banks of the River Humber in Hull and Grimsby, UK. The company operates a modern fleet that consists of workboats and multi-purpose wind farm support vessels, including another Damen FCS 2610, the MMS Supreme. Standardisation of the fleet was an important factor in deciding to purchase a second FCS 2610, says MMS Offshore marine manager Nick Brambles. “One of the appealing factors of choosing another Damen vessel to add to our fleet was the standardisation of the vessel type and its equipment. Additionally, we see the FCS 2610 design’s versatility as a clear advantage.” In addition to its fleet of vessels, MMS Offshore also operates its own shipyard facility. It was here that the company constructed another high speed catamaran of similar size to the FCS 2610. “All three of these vessels operate with the same engines, generators and/or similar machinery,” Mr Brambles continues, highlighting the fact that spare parts will be interchangeable between all vessels. “This allows us to significantly reduce operational downtime, ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.” The acquisition of the MMS Superior marks the ambitions of the growing offshore renewables industry off the UK’s north-eastern coast. Innovative Damen-built vessel named in Scheveningen ceremony

On 1st November 2019, the latest Damen Shipyards Group fishing vessel, constructed at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam (Maaskant) was named in a dedicated ceremony organised by leading fishing company Van der Zwan. The vessel was named Spes Nova by Director of Fisheries and Rural Affairs at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality for the Netherlands Nanou Beekman.

The Spes Nova, a UK-205 fly-shooter/twinrigger vessel, is part of a newly-developed range of fishing trawlers based on a Vripack Naval Architects design that sets new benchmarks for the entire sector. The original concept was borne of a collaboration between Vripack Naval Architects, Ekofish Group - a subsidiary of Van der Zwan - and Maaskant. This combination of expert marine design and extensive seagoing knowledge was a unique approach that led to an unconventional ‘future-proof’ solution. Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam was chosen to construct two such vessels for delivery in 2019 and early 2020. “Damen was chosen thanks to its reputation for high-quality shipbuilding,” says Gerard Zwijnenburg, owner of Van der Zwan. “Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam also has an impeccable track record of vessel maintenance going back many years, so the project was certainly in good hands.” The vessels will help to set new performance standards in the Van der Zwan fleet, thanks to their innovative design. The UK-205 range features a new type of hull design to reduce pitching in head waves. “This is achieved by reducing reserve buoyancy in the bow above the waterline,” explains John van der Maas, project manager at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam. “An oncoming wave will lift the midbody, but will have less effect on the bow, which results in a softer motion. Rather than slamming into waves, the vessel splits them, reducing resistance and stress on the hull.” In terms of propulsion, UK-205 vessels can be powered by diesel-electric or by conventional diesel engines, depending on the needs of each client. Gerard Zwijnenburg explains the logic behind Van der Zwan’s opting for a diesel-electric hybrid system in addition to a battery bank. “We’re thinking of the future,” he says. “The battery bank allows silent, emission-free running near populated areas, and also introduces the possibility of peak-shaving to help the vessels run at optimal energy efficiency.” This potential for balancing and optimising energy use is complemented by an energy recovery source in the form of a 700-volt DC-bus connected to the battery bank. As the vessel’s winches let out the fishing nets, the E-motors can work as generators to convert braking energy into battery power, a method very similar to that used in hybrid cars. Along with the vessel’s capability to sail on two or three motors thanks to its inbuilt redundancy, these energy-optimising measures will help Van der Zwan cut operational costs without compromising quality of performance. Spes Nova, the first Damen Maaskant vessel delivered to Van der Zwan, was put through classification tests in the third week of October, followed by North Sea fishing trials that same month, before returning to Stellendam for final touches in preparation for its naming in Scheveningen. The ship will soon begin its duties fishing for flatfish such as plaice, cod and turbot. www.damen.com

need for collaborative working

The fifth annual The Maritime Standard Ship Finance and Trade Conference took place last month at the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche. The event highlighted the importance of the shipping, ports and other maritime sectors working more closely with the financial services sector, as well as the growing influence of green issues and digitalisation.

The tone was set by the keynote speaker, H.E. Ahmed Shareef Alkhoori, Director General, Federal Transport - Land & Maritime who said: “Financial institutions have a key role to play in helping to unlock the barriers that can exist to the development of maritime businesses. It is important that good lines of communication between the financial and maritime sectors are cultivated, to allow both to take full advantages of the growth opportunities that exist.” The chief executive of Abu Dhabi-based ADNOC Logistics & Services, Capt. Abdulkareem Al Masabi, gave the second keynote. Offering a strategic market insight from a ship owner perspective, he said, “We need long term financial partners to help achieve efficiencies in the global supply chain. Conference chairman, Clive Woodbridge, editor of The Maritime Standard, said, “It was a really dynamic conference with some extremely interesting presentations, that generally reflected a more upbeat and optimistic assessment of market trends. However, speakers also highlighted some of the key challenges that lie ahead, with the introduction of IMO 2020, the banking Poseidon principles, digital transformation and the emergence of a new generation of lenders, among others.” The conference attracted an audience of around 170 top executives from shipping, ports, finance, law and other maritime sectors. Saudi Arabia Hosts first ever Global Conference on Sustainable Marine Development towards 2030 and beyond

The international 'Sustainable Marine Development Towards 2030 and Beyond' conference, was held recently in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the first time. It was organized by the General Authority for Transport in Jeddah.

The event kicked off in the presence of the Chairman of the Public Transport Authority Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary General Kitak Lim, as well as members and partners, and international leaders, all involved in the development of this giant industry. The conference included specialized sessions and workshops, with the participation of international and local speakers. It also featured speakers who are specialists in Maritime Transport. Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Chairman of the General Authority for Transport, commented: “The unlimited support of the wise leadership of the transport industry in general, and maritime transport in particular, has the greatest impact in enhancing the Kingdom's leading position on the international scene. The Kingdom is now ranked 23rd globally out of 174 member countries of the IMO, especially after its marine fleet reached 8 million tons. The Saudi fleet consists of 368 cargos and a Saudi-flagged vessel. This giant fleet plays a pivotal role in an important industry that is based on 90% of the world trade movement, which consolidates the Kingdom's position and leadership at the international level. Furthermore, it confirms its keenness to transform the Kingdom into a global logistics center to achieve the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.”
