Improved prospects across the industry... After a couple of hard years, are things really picking up across the sector? Welcome to the February 2021 issue of Marine & Maritime Gazette the monthly magazine aimed at Worldwide coverage of the commercial marine, shipping and waterbased renewables markets. With things seeming to be continuingly looking up across the Maritime World, there really is now a sense of ‘cautious optimism’ for many of us. As we look down the road to a bright year, with the promise of the maritime world still steering toward normality, we hope for continued improvement across the sector and a more normal environment for all. AD Ports Group creates oil and gas logistics base at Mugharraq Port for Eni Abu Dhabi

Aligned with national efforts aimed at driving the growth of the UAE’s energy sector, AD Ports Group has signed a new agreement with Eni Abu Dhabi B.V., the Abu Dhabi-based branch of the world-renowned Italian Integrated Energy Company, to establish a marine logistics base at Mugharraq Port supporting offshore drilling operations in the heart of Al Dhafra region.

California to spend $2.3 Billion on ports

Gavin Newsom - California State Governor - recently announced his budget plan, and its $286 billion top line figure includes an unexpectedly generous line item for shipping. If it goes ahead, the State of California will spend $2.3 billion on seaport-related improvements, roughly on par with US federal funding for the nationwide Port Infrastructure Development Program.

The lion’s share, $1.2 billion, goes to critical port-related infrastructure projects like railyard expansions, bridges and zero-emission modernization projects. The primary objective is to ‘improve supply chain resiliency,’ reflecting the need to speed up cargo movement at the congested San Pedro Bay seaport complex. The funds will also leverage available pools of matching federal funding. An additional $875 million will be set aside for zero-emission port equipment and related infrastructure. $110 million more will fund a new Goods Movement Training Centre for workforce development in Southern California. Another $30 million will be spent on improving data connectivity and business processes at seaports, and $40 million will go for speeding up the issuance of new commercial drivers' licenses for truckers. The Los Angeles/Long Beach complex could certainly use a boost in throughput capacity. Last month a record 105 container ships were awaiting a berth, primarily through a remote-queuing system that allows vessels to wait at far-off locations. Congestion at the port complex does not appear to be getting better as, according to the Journal of Commerce, a shortage of space at the terminals is contributing to longer berth times. The port electrification funding has attracted praise from environmental organizations, who have long called for clean-air improvements at the state's busy seaports. particularly Los Angeles and Long Beach. “There is no time to waste in tackling the climate and environmental impacts that are happening at the ports and we applaud Governor Newsom for including funding and leadership to move the state of California from dirty fossil-fuelled ships, planes and rails to zeroemissions solutions," said Teresa Bui, the state climate policy director for advocacy organization Pacific Environment.

Mugharraq Port’s ultra-modern infrastructure and its strategic location close to the region’s offshore oil and gas facilities will be made available to Eni Abu Dhabi operations. In addition to being provided a dedicated quay wall, marshalling yard, as well as manpower and logistical equipment, the company will also have access to liquid mud and bulk plant facilities onsite. Damen Shipyards opens Service Hub in Panama City

Damen Shipyards Group has added a new Service Hub in the Americas. With two already up and running in Canada and Brazil, a third has now opened its doors in Panama City to serve Central America and the Caribbean.

Fugro secures cable route survey contract for Denmark’s Energy Islands development supporting the transition to renewable energy

Fugro has secured a new contract with Energinet to undertake cable route surveys for the North Sea Energy Island project. The Energy Island will serve as an offshore power plant distributing up to 10 GW of offshore wind to Denmark and other neighbouring markets. Fugro will perform a combination of geophysical, geotechnical services and laboratory testing to provide valuable insight into the ground engineering challenges along the cable route from the Danish landfalls to the future artificial island location.

Fugro’s dedicated survey vessels will mobilise to site in March 2022 to begin the geophysical and geotechnical surveys. This will include remotely operated vehicle (ROV) inspections and shallow geotechnical investigations using Fugro’s innovative Blue Snake geotechnical system. The Blue Snake integrates cone penetration testing (CPT) and sampling technology to enable data to be captured in a single pass with testing completed consecutively at fixed distances along the cable route. The system integrates a high performance vibrocorer and 10 ton CPT into a single frame with a customised launch and recovery system – minimising manual handling and improving workability in difficult weather conditions. This innovative technology optimises data correlation, improving design and engineering for future cable installation works. ”Energinet is looking forward to take another important step with the Cable Route Survey to the North Sea Energy Island together with the experienced team from Fugro. ” said Søren Stricker Mathiasen Contract Manager for Energinet’s work on the future energy islands in Danish waters. Damen acquires Skoonbox to cut yard emissions

Damen Shipyards Group has taken over the Skoonbox from Skoon Energy. The world's first maritime-certified, multi-purpose battery container will be used to deliver renewable power at their own yards for applications where diesel generators or ships’ engines are primarily used at present. This 20-foot container is the first step towards Damen's sustainable battery network for mobile and temporary applications. In time, it can potentially also be deployed for customers worldwide.

The Skoonbox was unveiled during the 2018 World Port Days and major developments have been made since. The battery container contains 314 lithium batteries, good for 638 kWh of renewable energy. In recent years, the Skoonbox has been used for numerous applications in the Amsterdam Port Area. Putting the Skoonbox in a barge, for example, gave us a floating battery that has supplied green power to a range of ships. “The Skoonbox, and the clean energy systems coming in its wake, are opening up tremendous opportunities for us to reduce our ecological footprint and those of our customers,” explains Vincent de Maat of Damen Shipyards Group. “This is a sustainable replacement for diesel generators but it can also be used as a green form of shore power, allowing ships berthed at our repair yards to turn off their on-board engines. The latest addition to the icom line-up of marine products is the AIS RX version of the IC-M510, the stylish VHF/DSC with a large easy to read full colour display also offering secondary control using the Smartphone App.

The IC-M510 fixed-mount marine transceiver is suitable for both leisure or commercial vessels with its elegant yet rugged, waterproof icom build quality. Packed with great features, the new model now offers the ability to receive AIS signals (AIS version only) so users can see surrounding vessel traffic in real-time and make individual DSC calls to selected targets. Users can command and control the IC-M510 from a smartphone using the RS-M500 app (iOS and Android) through its built-in WLAN transmitter. LAND & WATER SECURES MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT AS IT EXTENDS NORTH

Leading wet civil engineering firm, Land & Water, has secured a major multi-million-pound infrastructure contract with PD Ports to upgrade Teesport Ro-Ro Number Two.

The contract announcement comes after Land & Water recently opened its new regional hub in Newcastle upon Tyne as part of a period of growth which sees its offering extending north. The project, which is due to commence in February 2022, will see Land & Water use its specialist plant and marine expertise to demolish and re-build the Ro-Ro Linkspan bridge at Tees Dock. These works will join the firm’s expansive repertoire in the North which includes a framework contract with the Environment Agency and more. Land & Water’s Contracts Manager and local lad, Andy McBride, says: “Working with PD Ports to redevelop the Ro-Ro and allow larger vessels to berth at Tees Dock is incredibly significant for Land & Water. “We are proud to be involved in the construction of this new Ro-Ro by using our marine civil engineering capabilities to strengthen the position of Teesport as the UK’s Northern Gateway for international trade. “We are very much looking forward to commencing these works and consolidating our place within the northern infrastructure sector in what is an extremely exciting time for the region as it continues to show it is a truly outward-looking, international region ready to welcome the cutting-edge sectors of the future.” www.land-water.co.uk

Plug-and-play steering gear for new coasters at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards

Damen Marine Components (DMC) has been awarded the contract for Optima nozzles, plug & play Piston-type steering gear and TIMON flap rudders for four coasters being built by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards (TB Shipyards). What is special is that the steering gear for these ships will be supplied plug-and-play, which saves a lot of time during the final installation on board.

Damen Marine Components is supplying various systems to Thecla Bodewes Shipyards for the four identical coasters, which will measure 118 x 14.3 x 6.2 metres. Most striking are the Van der Velden® Piston-type steering systems to be fitted on the ships. DMC will build this steering gear in its own workshop in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. The complete steering gear on a foundation, including starters, cylinders and all other necessary parts, is then lifted on board at TB Shipyards in the steering gear room and connected to the rudder. Installation therefore takes only a fraction of the time that would have been required if everything had to be installed separately. “TB Shipyards opted for a plug-and-play version in order to have the steering gear delivered and installed very quickly and efficiently,” says Leo van Zon, Area Sales Manager at DMC. “Building components as efficiently as possible on one frame and testing them in your own workshop creates a complete product of high quality and functionality. This saves time during the outfitting and installation, which is usually carried out by the yard. With the installation of plug-and-play steering gear, very little can go wrong, which minimises risks during outfitting, but also during the life of the ship.” As a specialist supplier in the field of steering and rudder technology, DMC has been working with TB Shipyards, which has locations in Harlingen, Kampen and Meppel, for many years to its full satisfaction. Complete steering systems have also been supplied in the past for new construction projects, including push boats, seagoing and inland vessels. “We know what to expect from each other,” says Emiel Mocking, Head of Newbuilding at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, about the partnership with Damen Marine Components. “DMC comes up with ideas and provides the customisation we need. On this occasion too, by supplying equipment in the most efficient form as plug-and-play. This allows us to save a lot of time in this project, without compromising quality.” The new project is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2023, when all coasters are expected to be delivered and commissioned. In addition to the Van der Velden® Piston-type steering systems, DMC also equips each coaster with the Van der Velden® TIMON flap rudder system and the Optima nozzle. The Optima nozzle offers excellent forward and reverse thrust and an extremely strong profile. Fugro partners with University of Houston on workforce development effort Fugro has joined the University of Houston (UH) and its four partnering universities, UHDowntown, UH-Victoria, UH-Clear Lake and Sam Houston State University, on a collaborative project to advance Geo-data science skills in the energy sector. The project, “Data Science for the Energy Transition,” is being funded through a 3-year grant with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and will offer undergraduate and master’s students specialised training in statistical and machine learning techniques for subsurface Geo-data. Fugro’s role as an industry partner on the project is to provide UH with realworld Geo-data and guidance on their use for hands-on training opportunities. Advances in Geo-data science are needed to keep pace with the global demands for renewable energy sources, including offshore wind. Requiring extensive Geo-data coverage over vast lease areas, innovative computing techniques can help operators shorten the development schedule by making critical information available more quickly. As an example, Fugro has developed a machine learning solution for mapping boulder fields from seafloor data to uniquely identify and analyse thousands of boulders. Accelerating the site investigation phase through this kind of automation helps lower capital investment and the levelized cost of energy for offshore wind projects. “We are pleased to partner with UH on this project and are committed to advancing Geo-data analytics and computing skills in the energy sector,” said Jason Smith, Fugro’s Global Director for Geo-data Analysis and Geoconsulting. “Conventional and renewable energy development benefits from more automated application of Geo-data. Sonardyne hybrid

positioning chosen

for vessels across

energy and science

Acoustic and inertial position reference systems from marine technology company Sonardyne have been chosen to underpin the critical station keeping activities of multiple deepwater vessels operating in the energy and ocean research sectors.

Through a combination of upgrades to existing installations and the purchase of new systems, four deepwater drillships, a marine construction vessel and a floating production system working in North and South America will be using Sonardyne’s 6G (sixth generation) Marksman DP-INS technology. In addition, an ultra-deepwater scientific drilling vessel has now also upgraded its Marksman DP-INS system to the latest (sixth generation) equipment configuration. Marksman DP-INS improves vessel positioning performance by exploiting the long-term accuracy of Sonardyne’s Wideband acoustic signal technology with high integrity, high update rate inertial measurements. The resulting navigation output is capable of riding-through short-term acoustic disruptions associated with deep water drilling and is completely independent from GNSS so can be considered as a third, independent reference for DP Class 3 vessels. The system uses a combination of single or dual redundant surface transceivers, Sonardyne’s own vessel-based INS sensor and Long Baseline (LBL) seafloor transponders. However, unlike conventional LBL operations, Marksman DP-INS does not need a full seabed array of transponders to be installed and calibrated before subsea operations can commence. For most subsea tasks, positioning specifications can be met with only one or two transponders deployed on the seabed. Additionally, as the system needs only occasional aiding from the acoustics, transponder battery life is substantially increased so the need to task an ROV to deploy and recover transponders for servicing is reduced. Noble Drilling has ordered a 6G upgrade to the Marksman system onboard its Noble Globetrotter II, adding two HPT 7000s to the vessel, as well as Compatt 6+ transponders for its vessel seabed array inventory and for wireless underwater marine riser flex joint monitoring. The DP-INS system onboard Helix Energy Solution’s Helix Producer-1 floating production system has also been upgraded to 6G. The vessel is operating on the Phoenix and Tornado field in the US Gulf of Mexico for Talos Energy. Two Brazilian drilling company’s deepwater drillships. Both rigs were fitted with Marksman DPINS when they were launched in 2011. Also in Brazil, another rig operator has ordered a 6G upgrade for the Marksman system onboard its 6th generation, deepwater semi-submersible rig. An Asia-based scientific drilling ship recently completed a Marksman DP-INS 6G upgrade. Sonardyne’s Marksman LUSBL technology was first installed on the vessel in 2005. This was upgraded to DP-INS with Sonardyne’s 5G hardware in 2012. A US-based marine contractor has also ordered a Marksman 6G upgrade kit system to DP-INS to improve their vessel DP capability, especially when GNSS positioning is unstable or masked by nearby platforms. MES Trading - everything certified, everything in stock... In general an anchor has a life span of 15 to 20 years but, if it needs replacing, it should be done swiftly. This would require a reliable supplier who knows the industry and has a huge amount of storage. Jacques van Mill started working in the family business when he left school. In those days it was called ‘Van Mill International’ and was a wholesale ship accessories and general offshore equipment supplier. Jacques knew that what was required to really establish his own company was storage - and plenty of it! Van Mill began in 2000 and had a warehouse of 1,000 sq metres. Since then his new company, ‘Marine Equipment Services’ (MES) based in Arkel, a city north of Gorinchem, has built an enviable reputation in marine equipment, set within a much larger storage facility of 4,000 sq metres. “My motto is: The best recommendation is the stock,” said Jacques, “In our industry a company delivering particular products fast and directly, will ultimately prevail,” he added. Van Mill buys his stock strategically, he chooses products which, in most cases, are not directly available from stock or wholesale. These products are then stored in large volumes. “Within the marine industry you can quickly make a name for yourself. The decisive factors are fast delivery options as well as good value for money. In most cases the customers have their products within 24 hours from submitting their order” commented Jacques. From an anchor to a jack-up platform, MES concentrate on main products being stock items at their depot. The aim is that each year the range is expanded to include additional items. The company also specialises in other items like winches, workboats, powerpacks etc. Standard amenities include various anchoring systems including the MESDolphin in different models ranging from 100 kilograms to 15,000 kilograms. With their bespoke service they can also produce anchor systems up to 32,000 kilograms. “We take care of our customers by providing a full service from start to product delivery. The systems are either built inhouse or off-site. We take care of the transportation as well as the maintenance” said Jacques. Among the many customers of MES there are ‘Shipyards’ the offshore field and construction company that specialises in the infrastructure of ports. For this company MES supplies accessories including cranes, jack-up platforms and workboats for lease at extremely competitive rates. Around 85% of all MES goods are destined for export with clients primarily coming from Northern Europe including Germany, Denmark, England and Scandinavia. extends contract

with Suez Canal

Authority

Svitzer recently announced another extension of its current contract with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) to include two additional tugs to service the Suez Canal.

Svitzer started operating in the Suez Canal in late 2019 with the two tugs Svitzer Port Said 1 and Svitzer Port Said 2, providing towage services to the SCA out of Port Said. In December 2021, the two tugs were joined by sister vessels Svitzer Suez 1 and Svitzer Suez 2 and from end May 2022, two additional tugs will join the fleet in the Suez Canal. – one will be operating out of Port Said and one out of Port Suez. With the newest additions to the fleet, Svitzer will operate six vessels in the Suez Canal and employ 120 Egyptian seafarers. compact tug to SAAM Towage

Sanmar Shipyards has delivered a fourth Bogacay series compact and powerful tug in two years to South American operator SAAM Towage.

Like its three sisters SAAM VALPARAISO, SAAM PALENQUE and ALBATROS, Bogacay XLVIII,which its new owners have renamed HALCON lll, is based on the, exclusive-to-Sanmar, RAmparts 2400SX design from Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. She will be the first Sanmar-built tug to operate in SAAM Towage’s home country of Chile. Measuring 24.4m LOA excluding fender, with a moulded breadth of 11.25m, moulded depth of 4.38m and maximum operating depth of 5.6m, the Z-drive HALCON lll is powered by two Caterpillar 3516C main engines each producing 2100 kW at 1.600 rev/min to achieve a very impressive for its size bollard pull of 70 tonnes. The tug has Rolls-Royce US 255 FP azimuth thrusters. With accommodation for a crew of up to six, HALCON lll has a free running speed of a minimum of 12 knots and carries 72.400 litres of fuel oil and 10.800 litres of fresh water. ‘FRUITFUL VINE’

Macduff Ship Design were recently pleased to announce the delivery of the new Macduff Shipyard built fishing vessel, ‘FRUITFUL VINE, BF 240’, to the owner’s Nicol Fishing Ltd. This new build replaces their previous fishing vessel of the same name, which was built by the same shipyard in 2010. The vessel is intended to fish around the coast of Scotland, occasionally pair trawling alongside the families other fishing vessel, the ‘STEADFAST HOPE BF 340’.

FRUITFUL VINE is a sister ship to the ORION, completed last year. At an early stage in the design phase, a decision was taken to remodel these vessels bows based on the preliminary results from a tank testing program which Macduff Ship Design Macduff Shipyard were running. Further detailed analysis on the design was conducted by the Wolfson Unit in Southampton using CFD technology to compare the proposed new bow against previous models with the results showing a net decrease in hull resistance at steaming speeds. Following this, the hull form was faired and finalised by Macduff Ship Design who then produced a full set of steel construction plans along with conducting the incline experiment and producing the vessels stability booklet. The fabrication of the hull was carried out in Macduff with the construction reviewed and verified by SFIA and the MCA. The hull of FRUITFUL VINE is built completely from steel, apart from the aluminium wheelhouse and masts, and features a double chine hull form, transom stern and modern bow designed to cut cleanly through the sea with less energy leading to a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions along with increased crew comfort. In broad terms, the layout of the FRUITFUL VINE is similar to some of the other recent new builds produced by the yard. Below deck features the cabins, engine room, fish hold and a large freshwater tank forward of the collision bulkhead. Whereas above deck is situated the aft shelter, galley/mess and side passage area, fish processing area and then forepeak where the trawl winch is situated. A bespoke hydraulic deck machinery package was fabricated by the yard comprising of a triple barrel winch with increased drum size to accommodate pair fishing gear, two split net drums, two bagging winches, two small gear handling winches, cod-end lifting winch and a dedicated anchor windlass. Thistle Marine of Peterhead supplied both the MFB8 landing crane and MBK13 power block crane, both of which featuring a slew ring base. Primary hydraulic power is provided by a single Parker hydraulic pump driven from a dedicated Mitsubishi 6D24 auxiliary engine producing 218 kW whilst secondary hydraulic power is provided by a Parker hydraulic pump driven from a power take-off fitted to the main propulsion’s gearbox. A hydraulically powered bow thruster with 2.3 tonnes of thrust is also fitted, supplied by Kort Propulsion. The hydraulic system, designed by the yard, is cooled via a Blokland box cooler and Bowman heat exchanger. The propulsion package features a 2.5 m fixed pitch propeller supplied by Wartsila, driven by a CATERPILLAR C32 main engine with 660 hp @ 1600-1800 rpm through a Masson Marine W7400 reversible gearbox with a 9.077:1 reduction. FRUITFUL VINE is the eighth vessel built by the yard in recent years to feature this propulsion package which has demonstrated itself to be both robust and adaptable with the Wide Operating Speed Range of the C32 main engine providing flexibility to achieve full power from a fixed pitch propeller both whilst steaming and trawling. FRUITFUL VINE also features a triple rudder system and a high lift propeller nozzle provided by Wartsila. Cooling systems for all engines and hydraulics onboard are served by box coolers supplied by Blokland Non-Ferro. The electrical power onboard is provided by two Mitsubishi generator sets supplied by Macduff Diesels Limited, each with a rating of 98 kWe and sufficient size to run the vessel’s power independently providing complete redundancy. The electrical systems onboard were designed and fitted by R.D. Downie, who also fabricated the vessel’s switchboard and control panels for all the pumps and motor starters. In addition to this, R.D. Downie also provided the fire, bilge and gas alarm systems on board along with the navigation light panel and assisted with the installation of the navigation equipment. The fish processing deck features a catch handling system designed and built by the yard and is complemented by a DEGA resin floor system fitted by PBP services. Two separate compartments are formed within the fish processing area which house both a storeroom and ice plant room. The fish hold refrigeration system along with the ice machine was supplied and fitted by Premier Refrigeration. A high specification navigation package has been supplied and fitted onboard by McMinn Marine Ltd. Scanmar provided the net monitoring package. Three vessel charter for Kotug Canada

Kotug Canada Inc. recently achieved a long-term agreement with Trans Mountain, operator of Canada’s only oil pipeline servicing the West Coast of Canada providing tidewater access to foreign markets for Canada’s petroleum resources. The company will provide escort towage to tankers loaded at Westridge Marine Terminal.

"Kotug Canada was selected for this purpose by shippers on the Trans Mountain Pipeline after a rigorous and competitive process facilitated by Trans Mountain. Besides the strong technical specifications of these modern vessels, decisive factors for the award included Kotug Canada’s commitment to a strong and innovative approach to Indigenous involvement and the partnership’s strong foundation in operational excellence in Canada and around the world," a Kotug Canada spokesperson commented. This agreement has been established in partnership with the Scia'new First Nation, located in Beecher Bay, on Vancouver Island. "This strategic location along the Trans Mountain escort route will provide Kotug Canada with a safe home for a dedicated berthing facility as well as supporting the commercial activities of the Scia'new First Nation in Beecher Bay. The escort tug names will commemorate two important people from the Scia'new community," Kotug Canada added. "The agreement provides the Expansion Project, and all other marine movements, with necessary resources in support of Trans Mountain’s stringent commitment to marine safety and will further enhance the overall safety of vessel transits along the commercial shipping route between Westridge Marine Terminal in Burrard Inlet and the open ocean" Kotug Canada said. Kotug Canada will provide and operate the two dedicated escort tugs, each approximately 50 meters long, with a minimum bollard pull capacity of 110 T BP, which will be flagged in Canada and operated by Canadian mariners. "Provision of new technologies will assist to reduce underwater radiated noise and greenhouse gases. This includes the application of a revolutionary vessel hull coating developed in Canada by Graphite Innovation & Technologies. The vessels’ propulsion systems will use the latest engine drive technology," Kotug Canada continued. "We will operate in close coordination with the Sc’ianew First Nation. The agreement also includes related training and development of community members of Indigenous communities to maintain the necessary experience and knowledge in the field of advanced safe tug operations and marine response. SEAZIP OFFSHORE SERVICE DOUBLES PASSENGER CAPACITY CREW TRANSFER VESSELS

SeaZip Offshore Service are using the winter break to transform its crew transfer vessels (CTV’s) from 12 PAX to 24 PAX. That is doubling the passenger capacity. With their new performance, the vessels will be operational from March-April 2022. They will continue to sail under the Dutch flag, which is an extra advantage for offshore wind farm projects that are carried out in an EU context.

The major capacity expansion concerns four vessels, the SeaZip 3 to 6, built by Damen Shipyards and operated since 2015/2016. The decision of the management of SeaZip Offshore Service was prompted by the dynamics of the market. “We see an increasing demand for flexible and cost-efficient transport solutions for both smaller maintenance teams and larger groups of technicians,” explained SeaZip Offshore Service managing/owner Jan Reier Arends. “Groups of 16 to 20 people are the rule rather than the exception. This fits in with the own dynamics of Maintenance & Operations processes and we anticipate this. More space per vessel provides the industry with more clout with considerably lower transport costs. By reducing the number of shifts, we also reduce the total emissions. Not unimportant in a sector that is committed to sustainable energy.” The upgrade of the crew transfer vessels will be carried out by Next Generation (NG) Shipyards, located in Lauwersoog. The capacity will be doubled by expanding the passenger compartment and there will be installed a sophisticated air conditioning and ventilation facilities as well. The comfort provided remains optimal and the generous layout of the passenger facilities makes it possible to comply with any social distancing rules for as long as the pandemic is ongoing. The work to be carried out coincides with the annual maintenance check, after a season in which the vessels have sailed almost uninterrupted services. In 2021 SeaZip Offshore Service was involved in an aboveaverage number of short-term projects in the offshore wind industry and in three offshore oil & gas projects. Jan Reier Arends expects to be able to meet the dynamic market demand more sharply and flexibly with the capacity doubling to 24 PAX. The considerable cost advantage will play an important role in this. SeaZip Offshore Service emphasizes that its vessels will continue to sail under the Dutch flag in their 24 PAX version. Previously, a regulation in Dutch maritime legislation made this impossible. OceanAlpha subsea pipeline survey OceanAlpha’s M40P USV has been employed by Malaysian geosolutions provider HGIS to complete an entirely remote nearshore inspection of a subsea pipeline in Tali Field for Brunei Shell Petroleum. The 5.5 metre long USV acquired seabed data from offshore, nearshore, and onshore fields to provide continuous geo-data support for the construction, operation, and maintenance of pipeline routing and subsea infrastructure. The unit was remotely controlled and monitored using OceanAlpha’s independently developed control system from a station near Shell Crude Oil Terminal, approximately 4-5km from the Tali Field pipelines. While the USV autonomously executed accurate surveys with minimal human intervention, surveyors were able to allocate more effort towards critical data analysis and hazard pin-pointing. Ran Zhang, General Manager of OceanAlpha, commented: “Due to a variety of factors, including workforce shortage caused by COVID and the industry’s shared goal for sustainable development, we see increasing interest in our USVs. Major Guyana subsea contracts for Saipem

Esso Exploration and Production Guyana has awarded Saipem an EPCI contract for the SURF equipment for the Yellowtail development in the Stabroek block offshore Guyana.

Subject to the necessary authorisations from Guyana’s government and investment approval, Saipem will start initial engineering and procurement activities in order to proceed with the program. The water depth is around 1,800 metres and the contract relates to the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of the subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines. Yellowtail will feature new subsea drill centres, each with separate oil production, water injection and gas injection wells, linked to a new FPSO. Saipem’s recently opened fabrication facility in Guyana will construct the deepwater structural elements for the umbilicals, risers and flowlines, with their FDS2 vessel (pictured above) handling offshore installations. In addition, the company has received the notice to proceed from Woodside Energy for a pipelay contract for the Scarborough project in the Carnarvon basin offshore Western Australia. Saipem will undertake coating, transportation, and installation for the 430 km (267 miles), 36/32 inch. trunkline, which will connect to the new Train 2 at the Pluto LNG onshore complex. The first cargo is scheduled to be delivered in 2026. The maximum water depth is 1,400 metres and Saipem will also fabricate and installation various line structures and the pipeline end termination in 950 metres of water. The offshore operations will be performed mainly by the company’s Castorone vessel and should begin middle next year. The two contracts are valued in the region of $1.1 billion (USD). www.saipem.com

DLM Custom Multi-Purpose Data Logger for Subsea Equipment Testing

Dynamic Load Monitoring (DLM), of Southampton, UK, has provided a custom data logger and subsea measuring technology for use in a new tank where cable protection systems are tested.

Darlington, UK-based Subsea Innovation Limited, a designer of innovative subsea and offshore equipment, will primarily use the equipment for testing and verifying their in-house designed subsea equipment such as pipeline repair systems (clamps and connectors), hang-off systems, and other bespoke subsea and offshore equipment. It will also be used for internal testing for Subsea Innovation’s purpose-designed and built submerged wear test rig. The company also maintains and manufactures deck equipment for cable lay vessels. This is the second major order that DLM has delivered to the company recently, having provided two bespoke monitoring systems that were installed on subsea bend stiffeners at an offshore wind farm. However, DLM is increasingly responding to demand for bespoke and standard solutions from similar maritime technology and marine electronics companies. Martin Halford, managing director at DLM, said: “We’re putting together systems like this with increasing regularity— incorporating load cells with other instrumentation and sensors. However, no two such jobs are the same. We start with the client’s problem, review what off-the-shelf instrumentation and sensors are available, and then customise the final package accordingly based on the environment - subsea or otherwise - and demands of the application.” In this instance, a custom data logger takes inputs from several sensors, initially feeding back information on load, rotation, and temperature. More sensors can be added to an expandable system should the need arise in the future. A stainless steel enclosure is mounted in Subsea Innovation’s workshop next to the test tank, which remains in construction. Within the enclosure, the logged data is collated and logged again as a package in a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) on a memory card. An Ethernet port, meanwhile, enables the user to plug in a PC to download the data periodically. Halford explained: “You can get a remote view on a web browser of the HMI [human-machine interface] screen to see both live values from the sensors and also download the data logs.” Integral to the system will be an S-cell load cell from DLM’s standard range, which will be submerged in the tank at a depth of approx. 1m. The load cell is 250kg capacity and will measure in tension and compression. This is the lowest available capacity of a standard range than reaches up to 20t capacity and boasts welded covers, stainless steel construction, sealing to IP68, and high accuracy. It is suitable for use on test stands, to take measurements during certification, and in vessel and tank weighing applications, in addition to retrofit in original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technologies and machinery. The project, contracted by Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust, saw Land & Water use its specialist plant to create a sheet piled landing stage on the River Great Ouse, at Kempston Mill. The works aim to bring more visitors into Kempston, benefitting the local economy and raising awareness of the Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway project. East London wharves returning to operation

A £2.6 million (GBP) programme of essential improvements for two East London wharves is underway for the Port of London Authority.

One hundred steel piles, each 22.5 metres long and weighing five tonnes are being driven into the 200-metre-long quayside at the adjoining Plaistow and Royal Primrose wharves in Newham, East London. These piles are positioned to provide a stable platform for the new concrete deck to be installed. ”These site works are the latest, essential stage in getting these wharfs back into use. By the end of next year, Plaistow and Royal Primrose wharves will, like Peruvian, be occupied by tenants and busy handling cargo,” commented James Trimmer, PLA director of planning & environment. “Together they form the riverside heart of a cluster of marine and industrial activity in East London, underpinning the low carbon movement of cargoes along the river, keeping lorries off the capital’s congested road network.” Peruvian Wharf, the first to return to operation, is home to Brett Group’s Capital Concrete operation. It was officially opened back in 2019 by London’s deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills, Jules Pipe CBE. The quayside deck slabs for Plaistow and Royal Primrose will be cast on site, using Capital Concrete from Peruvian Wharf. Work readying the site for cargo handling will include re-grading the riverbed alongside the wharf and installing berthing piles ready for ships to come alongside. The PLA acquired three adjacent wharfs, Peruvian, Plaistow and Royal Primrose over the last five years as part of its investment plan, in order to bring them back into use for cargo handling.

Jenkins Nab and Needles ‘back to the dredge’

Winter dredging for Jenkins Marine has been well underway recently with their new look split hopper barges ‘Nab and Needles’ both back hard at work in the Solent area.

Working together with the 30m x 9m backhoe dredger ‘Doreen Dorward’ and her onboard 50t long reach excavator, they enable dredging to continue around the clock to support marinas on the South Coast. They will be kept busy until Easter 2022 dredging Marinas! Both 300m3 capacity, self-propelled hopper barges have undergone a major refit to ensure they are more capable than ever of performing above and beyond the customer’s expectations and a relentless work schedule. Both vessels have a new 100KW bow thruster, new larger 200Kva generator, a complete rewire, new wheelhouse, with improved 360 degree visibility, and better accommodation with a drying room and aircon for crew comfort. Also a complete rebuild of the main thruster and a new engine canopy. The refit work was completed with a dry docking and a freshly cleaned hull bottom for both. Marinas around the UK are subject to ongoing siltation and require regular dredging to maintain water depths to ensure boats do not run aground on their approach to the marina and are able to berth and manoeuvre safely once they have entered it. Safe depths themselves vary depending on marina size and vessel access requirements. As one Jenkins Marine customer stated: “The key to providing a second to none marina experience is the provision of excellent infrastructure, and 24hr access to our marinas. Lowering emissions for waste service ship

A waste service ship working for the Port of Gothenburg is to be converted to hybrid power to drive down emissions

Conversion of the Northern Skagerrak, which is under contract to service the Port, will save in the region 680 tonnes of carbon dioxide. “We are a company that is very much at the forefront in developing innovative solutions. We are grateful once again to be entrusted with the task of working with the Port of Gothenburg on a project that will result in an improved environment in the Gothenburg area,” said David Kristensson, group CEO at Northern Energy & Supply. After the conversion, the vessel will be used to collect oily engine room waste, known as sludge, from ships arriving at the Port of Gothenburg. The Gothenburg Port Authority procured the service from Northern Energy & Supply and the service ship will begin operating during the second quarter of 2022. The vessel will run mostly using electric power although there will also be an auxiliary engine that runs on the renewable fuel HVO. When the invitation to tender for sludge collection was issued, the Port of Gothenburg climate objectives were used as a starting point in the evaluation model. Carbon emission mitigation was one of the quality criteria applied when assessing potential service providers. Following collation and evaluation, the poprt said that the Northern Energy & Supply fossil-free solution proved to be the best option. “Our aim at the Gothenburg Port Authority is to reduce carbon emissions at the port by 70% by 2030. Northern Skagerrak will serve around 6,000 incoming ships each year and the conversion to hybrid operation will be a significant step in the right direction,” said Erik Waller, Deputy Harbour Master at the Gothenburg Port Authority. All ports in Sweden are obliged to receive sludge from ships arriving at the port. During operation, the vessels accumulate sludge, which is essentially wastewater containing a mixture of oil residue, cleaning agents and solvents. The ships leave the wastewater to the port, then it is transported to a purification plant where oil and heavy-metal contaminants are separated from the water. www.portofgothenberg.com

Damen signs up Erma First to supply world’s smallest ballast water treatment system

Damen has signed its first contact with ballast water treatment systems producer Erma First. Greek company Erma First will be supplying its oneTANK, which is the world’s smallest ballast water treatment system. oneTANK uses chemical injection methods to clean ships’ ballast water and therefore represents an important expansion of Damen’s ballast water treatment system portfolio. The contract also marks a key milestone in the cooperation between Damen and the Greek maritime supply sector.

Damen Green Solutions has a broad selection of ballast water treatment systems in its range. These offer ship-owners various capacities and techniques in treating their ballast water. With the addition of the Erma First oneTANK, Damen can provide clients with a solution that is not only small, but also modular. This modularity will be particularly important in Damen’s first project with Erma First, where the client was looking for a plug-and-play ballast water treatment product that could be placed on the deck of its vessel. “Our client needed a temporary ballast water treatment solution for quite an old vessel,” explains Damen sales manager Rutger van Dam. “Erma First’s oneTANK is small enough to be housed in a twenty-foot container. This means that installation will be quite straightforward and, more importantly, at the end of the vessel’s operational life, the whole system can be removed and installed on another vessel.” The contract is important to Damen because it broadens the scope of ballast water treatment products that it can offer its clients. “We have different systems available from various manufacturers. We know the pros and cons of all these systems; they have varying capacities and use different techniques: UV, filtration, electrolysis, and now chemical injection. Whatever the client requires, we have the knowledge and experience in house to offer exactly what our they are looking for.” To treat a vessel’s ballast water, the fully-certified Erma First oneTANK uses an 8.25% or 12.5% sodium hypochlorite and 30% sodium thiosulfate solution, with both chemicals being neutralised after use. “For owners working with workboats, superyachts and pontoons (smaller vessels) that are not dependent on frequent ballast operations, oneTANK is a great solution,” continues Van Dam. “We are very happy to be working with Damen on this project. We will support their client with our extensive knowledge of ballast water treatment systems wherever we can,” says Erma First Business Development Manager and president of HEMEXPO Eleni Polychronopoulou. “Furthermore, I applaud Damen on their enthusiasm in building relationships with the Greek maritime industry. Sailing cargo ship

for EcoClipper

The Dutch sustainable shipping company EcoClipper has purchased ‘De Tukker’, a retrofit vessel, with an aim to establish sustainable shipping on the North Sea.

Early this year, the company stated that Jorne Langelaan, CEO and founder of EcoClipper, has signed ownership documents for the Dutch Klipper. De Tukker is now the first vessel to join the EcoClipper fleet. The vessel will require a retrofit and, all being well, will begin providing trade and passenger travel under sail on the North Sea in the first half of this year. De Tukker was originally built in 1912 and worked for many years as a coastal trader. In the 1980’s it became a Dutch sail training vessel, well-known for its work with disadvantaged youth. EcoClipper will now return De Tukker to North Sea trade and it will be the first in a proposed fleet of EcoClipper vessels which will include retrofit and purpose-built sailing ships trading on a range of routes. The works, which include a new deckhouse and work on the hull and rigging, will bring De Tukker back up to commercial standard. The ship has a barge shaped hull and will be able to carry about 80 cubic metres, or an equivalent of 50-70 tonnes, of cargo. It will also have accommodation for up to 12 paying guests. While sailing vessels do operate on the North Sea, there are no vessels currently dedicated to a fixed liner service for sustainable shipping on this route. “We have already been approached by a wide range of companies looking to ship their product in a sustainable manner. With this purchase, EcoClipper will be in a good position to begin providing this service in an environmentally friendly way,” Langelaan said. “Altogether, De Tukker should be an excellent ship to start putting the operational vision of EcoClipper into practice.” www.ecoclipper.org
