China accelerates building of more intelligent, unmanned ports

China’s Ministry of Transportation has issued a plan for the construction of new types of basic infrastructure over the next five years, under which accelerating the building of intelligent and unmanned ports was listed as one of the priorities.

New equipment for continuing Aqaba Container Terminal expansion

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) recently received new container handling equipment as part of the terminal’s on-going five-year replacement plan.

The new equipment, which arrived last month, includes four empty container handlers and one reach stacker, both of which will improve the handling of containers at the port. These new machines have been customised to meet the Terminal’s requirements and specifications, and feature state-of-the-art technological innovations, including spacious, modern operator cabs that offer exceptional visibility in all directions. The replacement plan will reduce operational costs and enhance quality and efficiency of work being done at the port based in the Levant region. In 2020, ACT purchased an additional two reach stackers and two empty container handlers. The terminal is also due to acquire one more reach stacker and fourteen new terminal trucks. Next year another eight terminal trucks and one more reach stacker will be added to this new equipment acquisition. To date, ACT only this year has invested in excess of $3.67 M (USD) in new machinery as part of this strategic plan. Commenting on the terminal’s latest acquisition of new machinery, ACT CEO Soren Jensen said, “We are happy to witness this latest step in our long-term investment strategy, which aims to increase the terminal’s operational efficiency and elevate ACT’s positioning on a national, regional, and global scale. “As a pivotal gateway to Jordan and the Levant, ACT is especially eager to build on its technological strengths and capabilities in ways that will ultimately serve to bolster the national economy.”

China’s intelligent port manufacturing exports are currently rising rapidly, partly fuelled by demand for high-efficiency port solutions and upgrading amid the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. The new blueprint should also further enhance China’s smart port manufacturing ability and further boost its share of the global market. Under this plan, China will push forward the intelligent upgrading of container ports in Xiamen, Ningbo and Dalian, and will build automatic ports in Tianjin, Suzhou and Beibuwan, Southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Port operators should speed up the application of intelligent scheduling and equipment remote control, as well as

unmanned trailer transportation. Port authorities will also build smart logistics service platforms and strengthen intelligent monitoring for dangerous goods. Across China, a number of port authorities have already been pushing forward the plan to go smart, as the coronavirus epidemic has led to port congestion and lower operation efficiency. Operators are also pushing forward the digital upgrading of port systems, which has reduced the time for customs clearance from 1.5 days to five minutes, and the average time for container pick-up by 20%.

Fugro’s cable route survey helps connect Scottish islanders to faster broadband Fugro has completed the offshore fieldwork phase of a highprofile multidisciplinary contract for Global Marine that will help determine subsea routes for 16 new fibre optic cables in the Hebrides and the Orkney and Shetland Islands. The diverse survey elements have acquired essential Geo-data by air and by sea that will support the Scottish Government’s ‘Reaching 100 %’ programme (R100). Delivered by Openreach on behalf of BT, the R100 programme will have a positive impact on the remote island communities and businesses, with 100% superfast broadband ultimately made available across the country. Using their innovative RAMMS (Rapid Airborne Multibeam Mapping System) solution, Fugro completed airborne bathymetric data acquisition of the cable landing sites in nearshore areas considered too hazardous, even for small vessels. The resulting high-resolution lidar data and imagery will be used to create a 3D model of the area to facilitate the cable route design and support mission planning. At sea, three specialist survey vessels from Fugro’s fleet performed geophysical and geotechnical surveys of the nearshore and deepwater areas, including 31 landing sites across the remote island network. The project also comprises unidentified ordnance (UXO) hazard surveys, sub-bottom data collection, and land-based sediment sampling. This unique combination of Geo-data acquisition systems and expertise will ensure fast delivery of accurate integrated survey results by the middle of this month. Clive Downing, R100 Programme Director, Scottish Government said: “Digital connectivity has proven to be vital throughout the pandemic and this is something that will make a huge difference to both residents and businesses as we continue to work, learn and access public services remotely. Global Marine and Fugro have successfully mapped out the subsea routes through complex underwater and overhead surveys and this work is the first step in connecting islanders to faster broadband as part of the Scottish Government’s R100 programme for the North Lot contract area.” Robert Thorburn, Openreach’s partnership director for Scotland, said: “The subsea element of the R100 build is both complex and sensitive. That’s why we’re so pleased to be working with industry specialists Fugro and Global Marine who are using innovation and technology – in the air, on land and at sea – to gather the in-depth knowledge we need to design the full fibre network to more islands.” www.fugro.com

First electric car ferries leave

Damen Galati for Ontario

The first, fully-electric road ferries to sail in North America recently made their way from Damen Shipyards Galati to Lake Ontario, Canada, to begin operations. Ordered by the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario, Canada, the Amherst Islander II and Wolfe Islander IV, 68 and 98 metres in length respectively, represent a new generation of zero-emission large ferries. The vessels departed the yard at the end of August to be loaded on the semisubmersible transport vessel Super Servant 4 and arrived in Lake Ontario in midSeptember.

Both of the open-deck vessels are equipped to be fully-electric, but also have twin diesel generators installed to allow hybrid and full diesel propulsion for maximum redundancy. Due to the harsh winters the ferries also feature 1B Ice class hulls and 1A Ice class azimuth thrusters, allowing them to be fully operational down to -25 degrees centigrade. The delivery of the vessels marks the completion of the first of the two stages of the project. The second stage, which is well underway, involves an ambitious programme in which Damen is working with the Ontario government to install the facilities that will enable the vessels to use shore power supplied via integrated shore charging and mooring systems. This will enable them to recharge their batteries while loading and unloading between the short crossings to and from the islands. This involves not only the installation of the necessary transmission infrastructure at each of the four ferry docks, but also the complete rebuild of the docks to accommodate the new vessels plus the onshore electrical equipment. The systems will also utilise load displacement and peak-shaving technology to achieve maximum efficiency and minimal costs. The vessels themselves will use an innovative, fully automatic charging system developed by Wabtec Stemmann with features that include motion compensation to ensure a stable connection between the ship and the shore even in rough seas. Delivering 6MW of power, charging takes just ten minutes. With the shoreside works due for completion in 2022, following extensive training for crews over the remainder of 2021, the ferries will commence operations in hybrid mode using the diesel generators to supply electricity to the motors. “This integrated project is the first of its kind and one that we hope will demonstrate that fullyelectric ferries of this size are a viable proposition,” says Leo Postma, Damen Area Director Sales Americas. “Damen now offers turnkey packages for organisations looking for integrated all-electric ferry systems, working with local contractors and suppliers to install the shoreside infrastructure that best suits local requirements and conditions. It has been a pleasure working with the Government of Ontario to bring this project to fruition and we very much look forward to seeing it fully operational. This is the future!” Damen is providing full support with staff in Ontario for the 16-month warranty period and is also establishing a Service Hub in British Columbia to provide long term support to the Canadian market. Damen is currently midway through a programme to build and deliver six Damen Road Ferries 8117 E3 for BC Ferries. While presently fitted with hybrid propulsion systems, they are designed to be adapted for full electric propulsion in the future. Ontario’s new ferries bring extra capacity and will make crossings faster as well as greener for the one million passengers and 500,000 vehicles which travel annually between Wolfe Island and Kingston, and the 270,000 passengers and 130,000 vehicles which travel to and from Amherst Island each year. www.damen.com

De Beers’ latest diamond recovery vessel departs Damen Shipyards Mangalia for Southern Africa Following the official handover held back in August at Damen Shipyards Mangalia, Debmarine Namibia’s new diamond recovery vessel departed on a four-week long maiden voyage to the Port of Cape Town, South Africa, where it will be fitted with mission equipment before beginning operations off the coast of Namibia early next year. The successful delivery marks the end of the shipbuilding phase of a landmark project that began over three years ago. It is the first vessel to be delivered by Damen Shipyards Mangalia, the Romanian yard that joined the Damen group in 2018, to take on large and complex, engineered to order projects under the banner of the Mid-Sized Vessels division. Debmarine Namibia is a subsidiary of the well-known diamond mining and jewellery company De Beers, owned in equal shares with the Government of the Republic of Namibia. The Additional Mining Vessel (AMV3) as it is technically known, will use sub-sea crawling extraction techniques to retrieve diamonds from the seabed off the coast of Namibia. These will then be processed on board. 177 metres in length, it is now the largest diamond recovery vessel in the world and the new flagship of the Debmarine Namibia fleet. The vessel is expected to operate for at least 30 years. The build involved many challenges, ranging from the onset of Covid-19 early in the project to the management of many subcontractors, each contributing their specialist skills and products. Engineering challenges included the installation of a DP2 dynamic positioning system based on a seven-thruster propulsion system powered by six generators, to enable greater flexibility in the vessel’s operations. Project management was undertaken by De Beers Marine South Africa (Pty) Ltd. With the constraints of the pandemic Damen also undertook the complete commissioning process, implementing incremental ways of working to ensure that it was all completed on time. “De Beers celebrates the completion of the vessel which, after a long period of design, construction and testing has now proceeded to sea” said Michael Curtis, Head of the AMV3 Project. “The vessel build has been a truly multinational effort which has converged successfully at Damen Shipyards Mangalia. The build of this magnificent ship has enjoyed a high profile in Namibia as the largest ever single investment in the history of marine diamond recovery. “Today marks a significant milestone in the project and for our company as the vessel starts its journey to Cape Town where it will be outfitted with the mission equipment. Damen’s dedication to building this high-quality and complex vessel, under very difficult circumstances and to do so with an excellent safety record is acknowledged and the quality of the ship is a testament to the skills of all who have been involved.” www.damen.com

Sea Machines embarks on World’s first autonomous, remotely commanded voyage by an ocean tugboat

In a milestone moment slated to prove that the world’s waterways are primed and ready for autonomous technology, Sea Machines will circumnavigate Denmark on a multi-week 1,000 nautical mile remotely commanded commercial voyage. Sea Machines Robotics, the leading developer of autonomous command and control systems for the maritime industry, announced today that it will embark on a 1,000 nautical mile autonomous and remotely commanded journey around Denmark later this month. Aptly named The Machine Odyssey, the voyage marks a landfall moment for autonomous transportation and is slated to prove that the world’s waterways are primed and ready for long-range autonomy. The Machine Odyssey departed from Hamburg, Germany, on September 30, with full onboard vessel control managed by autonomous technology, while operating under the authority of commanding officers located in the United States. The selected vessel, a modern ubiquitous tug designed and built by Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, is named the Nellie Bly. (Pictured left, courtesy Arie Boer, Marine Traffic) This voyage will prove to the world, and specifically to the thousands of global companies that operate the fleets of cargo ships, tugs, ferries and the many other types of commercial workboats, that operators can integrate autonomous technology into their vessel operations for a host of technology-driven benefits, from enhanced safety and reliability to leaps in productivity and new on-water capabilities. The Machine Odyssey marks a new era in the human-technology relationship propelling on-sea operations in the 21st century. At the helm will be the Sea Machines SM300 autonomy system, which will also utilize the latest in Sea Machines’ industry-leading, long-range computer vision. The SM300 is a comprehensive sensor-to-propeller autonomy system that uses advanced path-planning, obstacle avoidance replanning, vectored nautical chart data and dynamic domain perception, all to control a voyage from start to finish. The SM300 provides the remote human commanders with an active chart environment with live augmented overlays showing the mission, state of vessel, situational awareness and environmental data, as well as real-time, vessel-born audio and video from many streaming cameras. Marine fleets operate in our planet’s most lively and often potent environment where the direct forces on vessels regularly exceed those ever experienced by machines on road, air or space. Safety of ship, crew and cargo is paramount within the Sea Machines’ autonomy stack, with protection behaviours that enable the industry to optimize operations with assurance and an exacting balance of safety, productivity and efficiency. The project is named The Machine Odyssey - which translates to a long purposedriven and eventful journey and harks to Homer’s Odyssey, which for millennia has inspired humanity by Ulysses’ and his crew’s courage to undertake a voyage of discovery and adventure. This in many ways exemplifies the attitude and journey of an American venture-backed, deep-tech startup such as Sea Machines. The selected vessel, a modern ubiquitous tug designed and built by Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, is named the Nellie Bly, paying homage to the American journalist, industrialist, inventor and charity worker who was widely known for her ultra-bold and record-breaking solo trip around the world in 72 days. “From time immemorial the oceans have driven the best of human innovation, designed and built by architects and engineers, and deployed by a select and special group of people, mariners, that much of society relies on today and evermore in the future for the supply of food, power, water, goods and transport. And as a technology space leader, Sea Machines takes it as our duty to embark into new waters, motor through any and all fog of uncertainty, and prove the value within our planned technology course,” said Michael Johnson, CEO of Sea Machines. “Just as other landbased industries shift repetitive, manual drudgery from human to predictable robotic systems, our autonomous technology elevates humans from controller to commander with most of the direct continuous control effort being managed by technology. This recast human-technology relationship is the basis of a new era of at-sea operations and will give on-water industries the tools and capability to be much more competitive, end the erosion of high-value cargo to air and road, put more vessels on water, operate in better harmony with the natural ocean environment and deliver new products and services.” Throughout the voyage the Nellie Bly will carry two professional mariners and occasional guest passengers and will call on ports along the route to display and demonstrate the technology. Sea Machines will stream the journey live on a website dedicated to The Machine Odyssey for all to have access to 24/7 updates from the sea, the crew, the command centre, and more. www.sea-machines.com

MACDUFF SHIP DESIGN SEES A BUSY START TO 2021

Macduff Ship Design has seen a continuation to previous years strong order book, but 2021 has work carried out on many different vessel types, with the launch and delivery of a wide range of vessels and ongoing design work on a variety of projects around the world.

March saw the launch of a new 19m Pilot vessel, built by Colombo dockyard, Sri Lanka for Sri Lanka Ports Authority. This is the third such vessel launched by the yard and built to a Macduff design. A further 4th vessel is currently under construction. This fourth vessel is for a different client and despite being to the same basic design, does includes a number of modifications to suit the specific owner requirements A couple of months later the first of a series of three 30m tugs built by Tor Group International in Turkey was completed. The vessel has a 45 tonne bollard pull and has been outfitted to perform harbour duties, berthing, towing and firefighting operations. The further two vessels are currently being completed and feature upgrades to the original design to improve bollard pull to 60 Tonnes and add an aft winch, tow pins and stern roller. All 3 vessels are being completed by the yard on spec and are available for sale or charter. A slight departure from the commercial vessels more usually worked on, this year has seen the completion of a 55 foot trawler yacht for a private owner built by MMS ship repair and drydock in Hull. Designed with a layout that is beneficial for liveaboard owners the vessel is rated for Ocean Category A enabling long distance cruising for up to 6 passengers berthed in 3 cabins. The vessel completed successful sea trials and a long delivery voyage through the Caledonian Canal to Largs, where she is berthed for the current season. She has proven to be exceptionally comfortable, economic and manoeuvrable. This year has also seen a number of fishing vessels in build and delivered with builds continuing in Vietnam, Croatia, USA and the UK. We have continued a successful Model and testing programme in conjunction with Macduff Shipyards Ltd to develop new hull designs, improving both efficiency and sea keeping for crew comfort. Continuing many years of collaboration between the two companies this year has already seen the delivery of a number of new vessels by Macduff Shipyards with full design support from Macduff ship design including, hull development and structural steel cutting plans. The summer saw the launch of two 26.5m pair seiner vessels, ‘Faithful’ FR129 and ‘Crystal River’ FR 178, followed up by the launch of ‘Orion’ BF432. This vessel was originally planned to be to an existing 24.5m design but the decision was taken to modify the bow section to reduce resistance. Using data from the ongoing tank testing project the bow was altered and CFD analysis was completed by the Wolfson unit in Southampton to verify the design. The hull was then finalised and faired by Macduff Ship Design and a full set of construction and steel cutting plans were produced by the company. Further to these deliveries there has been a continuation to the build on several more orders with the recent arrival in Macduff from Finomar shipyard in Poland, who have completed the steel fabrication, of the hull for the fishing vessel ‘Venture IV’. This vessel has benefitted from the aforementioned tank testing programme with an updated bow section improving efficiency, sea keeping and crew comfort. The vessel will now be fitted out over the coming months before handover to the new owners. Delivery has also been made of the ‘Guiding Star’ HL2 a 10m trawler built by Jalna Construction in Middlesbrough with another vessel also being constructed by them to the same hull design. Further to these vessels in the UK we have seen the delivery of an under 10m vivier crab potter built to the same basis design. This vessel was built by the owners on the West coast of America to kitting plans supplied by Macduff Ship Design. Finally on the fishing front a 15m vivier Crab vessel ‘Aodh Na Mara’ WT414 was delivered to owners in Ireland having been built by Ha Long Shipyard in Vietnam. The summer also saw the launch of the aquaculture workboat ‘Kallista Helen’ a 26.5m Thermolicing vessel for Inverlussa Marine Services. The vessel continues the strong relationship between the companies, being the fifth vessel built to a Macduff design. The vessel designed with fish welfare as a key requirement features a thermolicer designed by ScaleAQ which utilises wider pipes and simplified layout provide a gentler experience for the fish. The equipment is enclosed in a dedicated shelter deck which also provides safer working conditions for the crew as well as providing a large top deck for carrying cargo and equipment. Built by Ferguson Marine Engineering in Glasgow the vessel is now undergoing final fitout and commissioning of the thermolice systems in Shetland. The company is working on a number of further projects within the aquaculture sector with 2 ongoing new builds for 20m Mussel harvest vessels for UK owners being built by Skagen Ship Consulting of Norway. We are also engaged in ongoing work with Skagen developing a range of hybrid catamarans for the aquaculture sector for both UK and Norwegian owners. The vessels in development are 15, 18, 20 and 26 metres in length to suit a wide range of possible owner requirements. During this project Macduff has developed 3D models and renderings of the designs to assist with concept development. These 3D models can be viewed both on screen or in virtual reality to better demonstrate the vessel layout and available space. We are looking forward to a number of vessel completions in the remainder of this year and next with several new and exciting projects in early stages of discussions. www.macduffshipdesign.com

The steel hulled, twin screw vessels are powered by two Caterpillar C18 engines providing 1216 bhp horse power with nearly 16 tonnes bollard pull. Nearly a hundred Damen Stan Tug 1606 type vessels are currently in operation by leading martime logisitics companies worldwide. Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC L&S, said: “The acquisition of these state-of-the-art Line Boats from Albwardy Damen is in keeping with our strategy of enriching the ADNOC L&S fleet for highly specialised marine services, including comprehensive port operations for customers in the UAE and worldwide. Additionally, we are committed to boosting the in-country value of our operations by contributing to the development of high-end shipbuilding and repair capabilities within the UAE. The country is emerging as a global hub for maritime and shipping operations, and we will continue harnessing the environment for shipping and affiliated sectors through such targeted capital expenditure.” Pascal Slingerland, regional sales director Middle East for Albwardy Damen, said: “We are grateful for the long-lasting relationship with ADNOC Group. We have invested heavily in our UAE base with new shipbuilding and ship repair facilities so we can support the full range of repairs and requirements during the lifetime of the vessel. This includes the construction of new boats in the UAE and drydocking in addition to Damen Services Team in the UAE, which offers niche services for the maritime industry.” The design and build work for the newbuild vessels was undertaken entirely in the UAE. Damen has previously delivered 33 vessels to ADNOC Group across all its operating companies. The tender for acquiring vessels was floated in November 2019 and the contract was awarded to Albwardy Damen in July last year. Four of the vessels were delivered in May this year and another two were delivered in June 2021. ADNOC L&S is in the midst of a strategic expansion program, to offer a broader service to its customers while supporting and enabling the growth of ADNOC’s upstream production capacity and the expansion of its downstream and petrochemical operations. Last year, ADNOC L&S signed a 25-year agreement with Petroleum Ports Authority to service all petroleum ports in Abu Dhabi. www.damen.com

Livett’s announce first purposebuilt commercial landing craft for the River Thames

21

Livett’s are hugely excited to announce the impending arrival of the River Thames’ first purpose-built commercial landing craft. Designed and built by PDL Marine Ltd in Portsmouth, UK, Bravo Lima GB - which will be wholly owned and operated by Livett’s - will offer an incredibly flexible new way to transport both people and light freight throughout the River Thames and beyond. The versatile design of the landing craft means Bravo Lima GB can pick up goods and passengers from miles of Thames foreshore, slipways, stairs and beaches. This means users are no longer restricted to being reliant on traditional piers, which can be expensive, congested and inconveniently located. The landing craft will be an ideal platform for a wide range of River Thames filming requirements, complementing Livett’s already extensive fleet of camera boats, safety boats and workboats. Features including an ultra low draft and opening bow door will also make the craft an excellent base for all river wall or foreshore surveys. Currently in construction, Bravo Lima GB is due to arrive on the Thames this month. David Rutter, PDL Marine’s business manager, said: “We were delighted to be given the opportunity to build this vessel for the team at Livett’s. The vessel has been designed to maximise all the space available and have a multitude of uses. We look forward to seeing the vessel commence operations on the Thames shortly.” Livett’s are working hard to reduce their environmental impact as much as possible. With this in mind, Bravo Lima GB will use OXE Diesel engines, which reduces fuel consumption by over 42% compared to a modern petrol outboard of equivalent horsepower. Furthermore, instead of traditional diesel, Bravo Lima GB will use HVO fuel which is made from 100% renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils, animal oils and fats. This reduces net CO2 greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90%. An onboard solar battery will also power all lighting and electronic needs. www.livetts.co.uk www.thamesluxurycharters.co.uk

Damen signs with Fairplay Towage for IMO Tier III certified Shoalbuster 2711

Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Fairplay Towage Polska for the delivery of a Shoalbuster 2711 ICE. The company will use the versatile vessel to perform diverse operations, including in the offshore wind industry, in the Baltic and North seas. Damen is building the vessel in Poland.

The Shoalbuster 2711 is a proven vessel from Damen’s standardised workboat portfolio. Its versatility comes via various features in its design, including its extreme shallow draft capability, large cargo capacity and its 45 tonne bollard pull. Despite the standard nature of the design, Damen is able to tailor the vessel to the requirements of its clients. In this instance, Fairplay Towage required a number of non-standard features that make this order stand out. This will be the first Shoalbuster 2711 to feature ice class to enable her to work all year round in Baltic ports. It will also be the first vessel of this type not only compliant with, but certified to, IMO Tier III emissions regulations. Fairplay Towage Polska, Offshore Wind project manager Arkadiusz Ryz said, “We are very happy with this order. The process of selecting a platform was not easy. Finding a multi-tasking vessel meeting our requirements and built to the highest standards was a challenge, but the Damen team managed this difficult task perfectly. “This vessel will be the first in our fleet of this power that is able to enter Baltic and North Sea ports with limited depths. I am convinced that this Shoalbuster, meeting IMO Tier III emission requirements, will open up new markets for us. She has the potential to play an important role in developing our presence in the emerging offshore wind industry in Poland. A big advantage of the project is the local content – Damen is building the vessel entirely in Poland. She will be the first such vessel built here, though I think she will not be the last one.” Damen sales manager Joschka Boddeling said, “Damen Shipyards Group has the ambition to become the world’s most sustainable shipbuilder. This vessel, with its IMO Tier III certification and contribution to future renewable energy projects, is completely aligned with this goal. We are very proud of this project and very pleased to be working together with Fairplay Towage.” www.damen.com

Sonardyne’s Sentinel to help protect Middle Eastern Navy and critical national infrastructure

Underwater intruder detection technology from maritime security specialist Sonardyne has been chosen to protect a string of naval facilities and critical national infrastructure in the Middle East.

Sonardyne’s Sentinel Intruder Detection Sonar (IDS) will be deployed across a number of fixed and floating assets to provide perimeter and mobile protection from threats, including unauthorised divers and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). More than ten Sentinel sonar systems will be used across the naval sites as part of a 360 degree NiDAR surface and sub-surface waterline surveillance system, developed and supplied by Sonardyne’s long-term maritime security partner, MARSS Group. Integrated into the NiDAR C2, the Sentinel arrays, create some of the largest ever fully integrated underwater security shields around marine infrastructure, delivering a security layer covering in excess of 8 sq km. In addition to this significant order, a further order for multiple Sentinel sonar systems will also be supplied via MARSS Group in the third quarter of 2021 to protect a vital piece of coastal-facing national infrastructure. A further separate order, with an undisclosed client, will see another Sentinel system used on a vessel for the protection of offshore infrastructure. Sentinel is the most widely deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) underwater intruder detection sonar technology on the market, with more than 150 installations world-wide. Its proven ability to discriminate between genuine targets and non-threats, such as large fish or pleasure craft, in a wide range of operational environments, makes it the ideal choice for high value or strategic assets such as harbours, jetties, ports, critical national infrastructure and vessels at anchor. Rob Balloch, VP of Sales at MARSS, says, “Sentinel’s proven track record, scalability, reliability and ease of use is exactly what our client needed. MARSS Group has partnered with Sonardyne over many years to integrate our NiDAR system into Sentinel to enhance situational awareness around ports, providing vital protection, delivering over 50 fully integrated sonars.” Ioseba Tena, Sonardyne’s Head of Defence, says, “As we have seen all too frequently in recent months, port and vessel protection from water borne threats is now more important than ever. Viking meet BW Offshore requirements for large FPSO bound for Australia

FPSO owner and operator BW Offshore has selected Viking Norsafe Free-fall Lifeboats, Daughter Craft and Davits for a large FPSO project which will operate off northern Australia.

Primary means of evacuation will be three Viking Norsafe GES-50 Mk. III Free-fall Lifeboats - each able to carry 70 people - with secondary launch and recovery achieved by corresponding HD-50 Davits. Also part of the package is a Viking Norsafe Munin-1000 Daughter Craft with capacity for 21 persons and a PLR-12005 Davit for launch and recovery. With a SOLAS crew of three persons, the Munin-1000 boat can recover 18 survivors from the water and is fitted with twin 300hp engines and waterjets - giving the power and manoeuvrability to fulfil its Search and Rescue role. The latest order continues the long-established relationship between Viking and BW Offshore, spanning multiple projects, and seals a deal that involved nearly two years of discussion of safety requirements. Fully compliant with Solas and DNVGL-ST-E406, the free-fall system is verified by ALARP process (as low as reasonably practicable) for operation in Australian waters. “BW Offshore is a long-standing client which demands best in class safety solutions. The FPSO will be a state-of-the-art facility and there has been great effort by both parties to identify the equipment specification,” commented Joe Dawes, Senior Sales Manager, VIKING Life-Saving Equipment. Viking has delivered well over a hundred units of the Viking Norsafe GES-50 lifeboat. The free-fall lifeboat has been installed at 22 locations in Australian waters in recent years, effectively shutting out the competition. While original design attributes play a big part in its ongoing success, Dawes explained that continual product development remains pivotal. This specific free-fall boat installation will feature a shortened launch ramp which saves space and weight. “The GES-50 is the most widely delivered craft in the market, built to the DNVGL-ST-E406 Performance Standard, which defines site- and host-specific installation of free-fall lifeboats and their launching appliances,” said Dawes. “Proven technology and willingness to adapt to customer needs are the basis for that record.” Viking’s capabilities in information exchange during the tender process had also helped in securing the order, Dawes said. “I think the investments VIKING makes in product presentation help us operate on an equal footing with our corporate clients and meet their expectations on specifications, management and support of the safety equipment they will rely on in critical situations.” Viking will supply pre-tested boats and fully assembled davits for plug and play installation to reduce site activities subsequent to delivery. After the FPSO goes onstream, the Viking team in Perth, Australia will provide complete back-up and maintenance support for the boats and davits. www.viking-life.com

Fugro Partners

design mooring line

fatigue tracker

Fugro, partnering AS Mosley and the University of Strathclyde, has designed a real-time mooring line fatigue tracker for offshore floating wind turbines thus minimizing the on-going needs for in-person inspections.

In March 2020 the consortium won the funding to develop the tracker, which fuses the motion and position measurements of floating hulls with a simulation model to monitor fatigue, taking advantage of the Floating Offshore Wind Technology Acceleration Competition, run by the Carbon Trust’s Floating Wind Joint Industry Project. “Having already demonstrated the technology in a relevant environment, Fugro and partners are now identifying opportunities to work with floating wind developers on pre-commercial projects to trial the solution offshore,” commented a Fugro spokesperson. As a future part of the UK’s green energy generation portfolio, floating offshore wind farms will need to operate reliably and minimize in-person inspections to reduce HSSE risk exposure and remain cost-effective. Drawing on its existing satellite positioning, structural and metocean monitoring systems, Fugro worked with AS Mosley and the University of Strathclyde to combine a physics-based simulation model with fatigue analysis to develop a cost-effective and streamlined methodology. "Instead of the current conventional 5-year subsea inspection regime, mooring line fatigue will be tracked so that inspection activities - which require vessels and remotely operated vehicles - are only carried out when necessary. Another benefit is that the monitoring is continuous and can be used to detect any problems or failure scenarios, such as anchor drag or trawler snagging, as they happen for quick resolution," they added. www.fugro.com

Imenco launches offshore mooring chain corrosion protection technology Imenco Corrosion Technology (ICT) has launched Pacu, a new mooring chain cathodic protection technology. Initially designed for deployment on FPSO mooring chains, the system, Imenco says, is equally applicable to any mooring system such as those on floating wind platforms or offshore aquaculture installations Imenco says that the solution, made up of its Piranha clamp and an integrated bracket-mounted sacrificial anode, slows the rate of corrosion significantly and prolongs the life of mooring systems. The technology can be retrofitted to existing chains. "Currently, the unpredictable rate of corrosion on existing mooring chains is widely accepted, with costly and time-consuming replacements taking place but not solving the problem of a high turnover in the lifespan of chain and corrosion-related failure rates of mooring systems. The product has undergone significant internal and external testing and with a move from qualification to commercialization, operators can now take advantage of the full ICT package, including computer modelling, testing, installation, and verification of the protection," an Imenco spokesperson commented. "The cathodic protection of chains opens up the opportunity to reduce corrosion allowances, thereby enabling thinner chains to be used in new and replacement systems. This leads to less weight and therefore less equipment needed for handling, transportation, and installation, reducing the carbon footprint of operations". "Pacu has multiple applications within the Oil & Gas industry including near-shore moorings and permanently moored offshore structures, but also in other maritime industries, including offshore wind". www.imenco.no

Addressing ship noise and vibration pollution BV Solutions M&O and TSI recently signed a collaboration agreement to promote worldwide engineering services and solutions which specialise in vibration and noise that can be applied during the design and operational phases of a ship to its delivery. The companies involved said they are working together on ‘the design of ships with low environmental impact with the aim of reducing and mitigating the underwater radiated noise generated by the shipping activity as well as the airborne noise radiated to the ports’. The partnership between BV Solutions M&O and TSI was formalised in July 2020, however, their first collaboration was 12 years ago, in the framework of the European R&D projects SILENV and BESST, where both institutions were involved on the characterisation of acoustic signatures of cruise ships and commercial vessels. The organisations are able of characterise the acoustic behaviour of ships in transit through the quantification and analysis of underwater radiated noise generated during the operation stages. A Non-intrusive Cavitation Detection System (NiCDS) has been developed for autonomous detection of propeller cavitation based on the measurement of vibrations transmitted to the hull. The installation of the NiCDS improves a ship's acoustic signature due to the control of cavitation inception and the identification of undesired operating conditions. Advantages also include the extension of the service life from the elements affected by the cavitation phenomena such as the propeller and rudder - control of the cavitation intensity with precision - suppression of vibrations derived from the inception of cavitation, improving the comfort levels on board of the ship - and optimisation of fuel consumption thanks to the improvement of the ship performance. www.bureauveritas.co.uk

Wave supply portable oil spill handling

Wave International a stand-alone, mobile and portable system for fast action when dealing with accidental fuel and oil spills - the DuoCart.

Designed specifically for marinas, ports, dockyards, canals, rivers, or any other areas such as from within vessels or contaminated land, such as where rainwater has mixed with diesel, the DuoCart is a robust but lightweight system that can be quickly moved by one person into action at the spillage. A suction lance is used to suck the polluted water up, which is then passed through the dual Wavestream filter systems removing any pollutants including micro-plastics and returns legally approved standards of filtered clean water back into the waterway or drains. The DuoCart utilises a particulate pre-filter and a high capacity Wavestream filter, which is manufactured to Lloyds Register Standards and has a flow rate of between 20-50 litres per minute depending on the pump. They are fitted on a manoeuvrable cart, which also contains the suction lance and outlet hoses, and operates either via nearby DC power source or using its own integral battery power. If fuel, oil or any other form of pollutant occurs, the user can simply wheel the DuoCart to the location and start cleaning up immediately. This avoids the need for other forms of intervention or onshore disposal, and the use of spill response materials which then require disposal. The filters in the DuoCart have a long service life, depending on usage and once saturated, can be easily removed, disposed of appropriately and replaced. www.waveinternational.com

Three wins in

three markets

The SMS Group has begun its FY21/22 period with a particularly buoyant first six weeks - the company has enjoyed major outfit wins in the Cruise, Defence and Superyacht sectors.

The SMS Group has an enviable reputation as specialists in outfit, ship repair, and marine engineering in the Commercial Marine, Defence and Cruise sectors. Darren Smith joined as Head of Business Development only a month ago and since his arrival The SMS Group has, under contract, three new major projects in three differing markets. Darren comments: “The recent wins come on the back of many months of hard work. “What’s exciting is that all three wins are sizable and that they are in three differing markets illustrating both our capabilities and our flexibility. “We‘ve a major yacht project to deliver in Q4 of this year, running into Q1 of next, we’ve a huge Defence project to the deliver preChristmas, whilst simultaneously supporting a major Cruise project. “This revenue makes up a sizable portion of our annual budget and is testament to the sterling efforts of Dan and the outfit team over the last three years.” As The SMS Group continues to invest in the outfit vertical of its developing business the company is clearly upscaling; expanding its footprint inside Associated British Ports Southampton, acquiring new tooling, equipment and temporary storage space, and increasing office space and headcount too. Dan Lockyer, Head of Interiors, comments: “Whilst our growth was foreseeable, and very much in line with our business plan it does create the obvious challenges. “We need more space, more equipment, and more resource. It‚‘s great to see the business moving into simultaneous, turnkey, delivery whilst maintaining our ethos of ‘cradle to grave’ project management. We all genuinely believe that’s our USP, that’s what sets us apart.” Dan concluded by saying: “Our growth also impacts our supply chain all of which have been tremendously supportive. “I’d like to go on the record with a big ‘thank you’ to all our suppliers. Our next significant move is another key hire. We’re looking for an Estimator with outfit experience to join the team; marine experience or shoreside - with a real passion for the outfit sector. “We’re a young and very capable team hence a good work ethic and sense of humour is ‘mission critical’. “We’re all very hard working and very focused on both the business plan and our customer base.” www.sms-marine.co.uk

New Viking evacuation kit puts turbine

tower safety first top to bottom

Self-contained evacuation kit for wind turbine tower complements all-in-one Viking solution for turbines launched earlier this year. Viking Life-saving Equipment is maintaining momentum in its development of the most complete range of safety solutions to cover the risks facing wind turbine service technicians, by introducing an easily accessible and self-contained evacuation kit located in the tower. Following a collaborative design project, Viking has launched a tower evacuation kit which fits snugly into what is currently an unused space between the platform handrails and the tower’s outer wall. Housed in a PPE chest developed by JoBird, the evacuation kit includes Viking YouSafe HighTide immersion suits with integrated harnesses and Skylotec Milan descent devices. Easily accessible via a hinged lid, the polyethylene chest slots into position in the void space at the platform’s edge where it is held in place between railings and tower wall by standard brackets. Each unit can accommodate six sets of evacuation equipment. Earlier this year, Viking made a strong market impact with the launch of an all-in-one evacuation kit for technicians working at wind turbine nacelle level, once again featuring a special purpose storage unit from JoBird and Skylotec rescue devices. Located on the helihoist platform, the outside container is built to withstand 100 mph winds for 30 years. In contrast, the new container for the protected lower platform is lightweight and formed to enable drop-in installation. “Now, we can offer evacuation solutions that deliver identical ISO, SOLAS and Class-approved lifesaving equipment to protect wind turbine service technicians from the top to the bottom of the tower,” says Bettina Kjaergaard, Global Product Manager, Offshore Wind, Viking Life-Saving Equipment. “In emergency situations, having immediate access to the right evacuation equipment can be decisive.” The latest product evolved out of a dialogue between Viking and design engineers developing a new wind turbine installation, she adds. “Viking is very established offshore but we take it as a welcome indication of our progress in the specialized wind sector that we are being consulted on safety issues at the earliest stages.” The result is an evacuation kit that is integrated with the tower lay-out and within easy reach of turbine service personnel. With clip hooks to attach to railings, 125m of rope and a speed regulating rescue descender, the integral solution is also suitable for lowering injured or unconscious personnel. “Like many good ideas, the self-contained tower solution is creative and simple, and we have secured our first major contract already,” says Kjaergaard. “Offshore wind is a growing sector which takes the risks faced by the technicians putting their lives at risk day in, day out very seriously. For highly-skilled offshore professionals, HQSE is a key indicator of employment standards.” www.viking-life.com

ESVAGT'S SOV TO WORK AT UK WIND FARM

Danish offshore vessel operator Esvagt, recently took delivery of a newbuild service operation vessel from Havyard Leirvik and plans to deploy the vessel at an offshore wind farm in the UK. The company commented that the vessel, its third SOV offshore service vessel, was delivered to it by Havyard in nine months. The vessel completes the order for three SOVs ordered to service Vestas in several offshore wind farms. The new vessel is a sister vessel to ‘Esvagt Alba’, working in the Moray East wind farm in the UK, and ‘Esvagt Schelde’, servicing Vestas in Borssele 3-4 and Northwester 2 wind farms in Dutch and Belgian waters, respectively. The new SOV had it’s first day at work at RWE's Triton Knoll offshore wind farm at the start of this month. RWE commented that it had installed the last of the Vestas 9.5 megawatts (MW) turbines at Tritton Knoll. The project is on track to complete turbine commissioning in 2021 and achieve final project completion in 2022. Each of the 90 Vestas wind turbines can power a typical home in the UK for 29 hours with just one rotation. www.esvagt.com
