Record breaking seventh win Former Welsh and British Isles singles champion David Kingdon was crowned Tenby Bowling Club’s gold cup winner for a record-breaking seventh time.

Twenty-one years after he first lifted one of the most sought-after titles in Welsh bowls, the Kidwelly Town Bowling Club member chalked up success beating Cheltenham’s Matt Cuthbert 21-4 in the final which lasted just 13 ends.

Defending gold cup champion John Roberts, of the host club, meanwhile had to settle for silver this year.

The Welsh team captain won the Percy Howells Silver Bowl for a second time beating Mark Driscoll, also of Kidwelly Town BC, 21-15.

The third trophy up for grabs, the consolation Five Arches Bowl, for players knocked out of both the gold and silver competitions in the early rounds, heads to Presteigne BC after Marcus Smith returned a 21-13 winning scorecard over Tenby’s Ashley Hooper to win the competition for the first time.

Outstanding Welsh success at British Isles Championships

Twenty-four-year-old Ross Owen was Wales’ hero at the British Isles championships at Royal Leamington Spa winning both the Under 25s title against Ireland’s John Byrne, 21-6, and the fours with Harlequins BC teammates Jordan Davies, Wales’ newly junior international squad captain, his brother Jack, a last minute substitute for Phil Carpenter, whose father had sadly passed away on the eve of the tournament, and Jarred Breen.

With a combined age of 98, the Mid Glamorgan-based foursome were possible one of the youngest ever to win the title. They lifted the silverware after a 24-14 victory over Guernsey’s Len le Ber, Matt Solway, Gary Pitschou and Matt le Ber.

The power of deep aeration on video

The concept of one metre deep aeration, to relieve compaction and improve drainage, really needs to be seen in action to appreciate the long-term benefits. Our long and very hot summer with little rain will, without doubt, lead to compaction and drainage problems on the bowling green and inevitably in amenity areas and gardens. Terrain Aeration have produced a new video that shows precisely how to alleviate the problem, using the proven Terralift system that has been in operation for over twenty-five years. As soon as the heavy rains come areas of turf compaction and panning become self-evident with large stretches of standing water.

Normal aeration and scarifying are of course essential to promoting a healthy sward but the penetration isn’t deep enough to get to where the real problem lies. Go down a metre with a hollow probe, using a JCB breaker gun to penetrate the hard compaction in the soil, and release compressed air up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi). This fractures the soil, creating and opening up the fissures that will allow the water to drain. Repeat the process on a staggered grid pattern at two metre spacings and you ensure each air blast interconnects the underground labyrinth of cracks and fissures.

As you can see on the Terrain Aeration video, that is how the Terrain Aeration system works but it doesn’t stop there. Dried seaweed is injected on the tail end of the blast and this sticks to the walls of the probe hole and cracks. Over time it expands and contracts with the moisture content and maintains the drainage when the heavier rains fall. Water storing polymers can also be added at this stage as an extra insurance with water retention. The interconnecting system created also allows oxygen and nutrients to get to the roots, while the grass pushes them down to reach the deeper water supply and help promote top growth. The probe holes are back filled with porous Lytag aggregate and finished with the usual top dressing to encourage grass growth over the probe holes. In the case of the golf green, tee or sports pitch play can resume immediately.

Once treated, the area will benefit for many years to come as has been demonstrated by Terrain Aeration over the years for thousands of sports venues, golf courses, parks and amenity areas. The deep penetration process is used to great effect around trees, especially where the ground has become very compacted due to foot traffic. The Terralift system has treated such notable areas as the Royal Parks, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and many National Trust properties. But it is equally beneficial in relieving compaction and creating drainage on formal lawns and even small gardens as well as sports pitches and golf greens.

Penylan BC take 2018 Carruthers Sheild title After a truly impressive campagn throughout, Penylan Bowls Club took the Carruthers Sheild title in an exciting final 71-68, against RTB Ebbw Vale.

Penylan also beat Harlequins in a tight semi final (79-78) and Parc Y Dre 92-59, in the quarters.

Welsh success at Special Olympic Anniversary Games

Eight hopeful Welsh bowlers made the trip to Scotland for the Special Olympic Anniversay Games and turned in some wonderful performances.

The team were: Shaun Peregrine from - Ammanford, Naomi Baelz - St Athan, Paul Rogers - Cwmbran, Millie Campbell - Trealaw, Rhondda, Alan Beech, David Pratt, Robert Parker and James O’Brien all from Cardiff.

They competed against the best bowlers from the Scottish and English Special Olympic Regions and were successful in both the Singles and Pairs Competitions winning a total of 16 Medals.

The team was accompanied by Barrie Jenkins Head Coach and Sandra Jones Assistant Coach from Cardiff Chameleons.

After her recent triumph in the National U25 Singles competition, Lowri Powell of Abertillery Bolws Club has been selected for the Wales International U25 squad that travels to Scotland in 2019.

The Division went to the last, rearranged game, of the Season with both Llanidloes and Newtown Bowling Club in contention. Playing away at Carno Llanidloes needed to gain 5 and a half points from the game to match the 53 points already accumulated by Newtown - they came agonisingly close, winning by 5 points to 2, thus finishing only half a point short of Newtown points total - a real ‘nail-biting’ finale to a great season!

Montgomery Bowling Club won promotion to the First Division, with a thoroughly consistent performance winning 10 of the 12 matches to secure the Second Division title for the 4th time.

In the Montgomeryshire League Cup Final Berriew beat Welshpool 82-73 and, in the Montgomeryshire Ladies League, Berriew Ladies ran out victorious with Carno ladies finishing worthy runners up.

David Rowlands from Machynlleth Bowling Club had a memorable seaon, winning the Champion of Champions Carl Pryce from Berriew BC won the County Ranking shield, appearing in the final of the Four qualifying events, winning the County Triples and was runner up in Singles, Pairs and Fours.

In the Montgomeryshire Veterans League, a strong Llanidloes Team came through in the last weeks of the season to secure the top spot , with Maesydre finishing runners up.

Bowl Profiles TIGER The Tiger is a full biased model that was developed because of the increasing need for a bowl that suits a multitude of playing speeds.

TIGER II The Tiger II is the third member of the ‘Ergo’ family of bowls, complimenting the very successful Dreamline and Tiger models.

There is a growing trend in many clubs for a slightly wider bias bowl than the Dreamline.

The Tiger II is a mid-biased bowl that will suit the player looking for a multi-purpose set of bowls.

It is a contemporary design of bowl with a gentle and predictable trajectory, and is the widest drawing of the ‘narrow’ biased bowls currently available.

TIGER PRO

Given the huge successes of both the Tiger and the Tiger II, it was found that top bowlers were still seeking for a bias choice between the Tiger and Tiger II lines. After a period of testing, the Tiger Pro bias was manufactured as that ‘in between bias bowl’ that is much sought after. The Pro has become the fourth member of the ‘Ergo shape’ range. To be approved by World Bowls Ltd one day and used by Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby the next when winning the World mixed pairs says a lot about the quality and trust the top players have in the bias consistency of the Henselite brand.

CLASSIC II The Classic II is the original narrow biased bowl. This narrow version has less bias than the original Classic model.

Manufactured with a traditional Classic bias for bowlers who can play on all types of green and require a consistent draw.

The Classic II, with its midstrength bias, is well suited to slower outdoor greens and also performs well on faster indoor carpets in the UK. Distinctive finish commonly referred to as a ‘hockey stick bias’ and recognised for its ability to draw around cluttered heads.

GREENS & GREEN MAINTENANCE

It never rains but it pours

Pontarddulais Bowls Club and Graig Merthyr Bowls Club share the same council-owned green in Coedbach Park, Pontarddulais, Swansea. The green there has seen around ninety years of play and until early in 2018 had always been free draining, with regular treatment such as Vertidraining, although it had become noticeable the green was changing. Built on shale, as is typical of many greens, the gradual compaction was taking its toll. Club Treasurer Bryan Gillard remembers standing under the canopy by the Clubhouse and watching what happened to the green when it rained heavily.

“The green was filling with water before my very eyes,” he says, “and after the heavy showers it remained quite sodden and unplayable. It seemed no amount of work could get it back into shape.” This left fifty or so members without playing facilities until it dried out.

Bryan remembered reading about Terrain Aeration’s treatment for bowling greens and sports pitches in Bowls magazine and he invited the specialist aeration company to come along and advise on the situation. It became immediately clear that much deeper aeration was needed than the usual Vertidraining, to relieve the compaction and panning beneath the surface. Bryan sought approval from Swansea City Council and with the help of two local councillors the funds were raised to do the work in March 2018.

Terrain Aeration’s deep penetration aeration system uses their Terralift machine to drive a probe one metre deep into the soil, through the compaction, where it releases a blast of compressed air, fracturing the soil. On the tail end of the air blast dried seaweed is injected, which sticks to the walls of the fissures. This is finished with the probe hole being filled with porous Lytag aggregate and topped with the usual top dressing. Here the seaweed will remain, swelling and contracting with the moisture in the soil, maintaining the aeration, drainage and allowing oxygen to get to the roots. In some instances water-storing polymers may also be added with the seaweed The process is repeated over a staggered grid every two metres to ensure the
