Learning Disability Indoor Bowls International Series Munro Cup 2021 dates The Learning Disability Indoor Bowls International Series Management team recently announced that the next LDIBIS event for the Munro Cup will be held in Cardiff on 15th, 16th & 17th June 2021 - obviously dependant on further covid-19 restrictions. After the cancellation of the event in June 2020 due to the pandemic the LDIBIS team have been hard at it behind the scenes to give our athletes something to plan for and look towards competing in. “Covid has affected us all and cancelling the event in June was the right decision but so heart wrenching for all involved,” commented LDIBIS Competition Manager Janice Gower, “This announcement is fantastic news. Everyone can start planning

for the Munro Cup in 2021.” Richard Maddieson Operations Manager said, “I am really pleased that we have been able to get the support of the Cardiff Club so that we the team at LDIBIS and the Head Coaches can start to plan ahead for another superb International Series. Of course we do realise that this will still depend on Covid-19.” “I’m really happy that we can give our dedicated athletes something to look forward to after many months of not knowing if we will ever get back to competition,” commented Head Official Dan Bluett. “We must remember that there’s still a long way to go and the World is changing daily with regards to the covid-19 pandemic but I hope that we can all meet up in Cardiff as planned. by Arthur Peaches For some time now Association administration in our game in Wales has been subject to much disagreement and more than a little discord! Being a magazine reporting news and views from the game, we obviously cannot really express a view either way about the recent disagreements between Bowls Wales and any of the National Governing bodies (NGBs) - so we thought it best to reproduce various published quotes and articles from each side - then our readers can at least develop their own views, and like the rest of us, keep their fingers crossed for a speedy and fair resolution. The relatively recently formed Welsh National Governing Body for Bowls is a group made up of the recognised National Governing Bodies for the sport of bowls in Wales, including: Welsh Bowling Association (WBA) Welsh Women’s Bowling Association (WWBA) Welsh Indoor Bowls Association (WIBA) Welsh Ladies Indoor Bowls Association (WIBA) Welsh Short Mat Bowls Association (WSMBA) Welsh Bowls Umpires Association (WBUA). This group publishes newsletters to the members and in the July 2020 edition included a few items relating to the ongoing problems. Below are some quotes from such:

“We make no secret of the fact that there are differences of opinion between us and Bowls Wales, hence the reason why we have been involved in discussions with both Bowls Wales & Sport Wales for most of this year trying to resolve those differences. Those major differences of opinion are: 1. National Governing Body representation on the Bowls Wales Board of Directors. 2. Bowls Wales policy for appointing Directors to the Board. 3. National Governing Body representation on Bowls Wales focus groups, Performance Group, Communication Group & Development Group. 4. The proposed appointment of a National Pathway Coach/Manager 5. Governance of the sport of bowls in Wales. Prior to lockdown a constructive meeting was held with representatives of Sport Wales while the meetings held with the Bowls Wales Director responsible for Performance, Richard Bowen, and the Board of Bowls Wales were far less constructive. We remain in discussion with both Bowls Wales & Sport Wales to resolve these issues. Should you require further information on any of these points please do not hesitate to contact your National Secretary” “Bowls Wales a Limited Company by Guarantee was formed in 2017 to act as the co-ordinating body for the sport of bowls in Wales, its own Articles of Association approved by Sport Wales and registered at Companies House confirm this status. However in recent weeks Bowls Wales supported by Sport Wales have declared themselves the National Governing Body for the sport of Bowls in Wales, this ‘self declaration’ goes against their own ‘Articles of Association’ and possibly against company law and this self declaration is being challenged by us. We have written to Brian Davies Chief Executive Officer of Sport Wales and are seeking an urgent meeting with Bowls Wales. World Bowls the governing body for the sport of bowls worldwide recognise us as the governing bodies for bowls in Wales and not Bowls Wales.”

NEWS IN BRIEF “We welcome the decision taken by Alun Jones to stand down as Chairman of Bowls Wales, Jones who has been at the helm since the formation of Bowls Wales in 2017 lost the trust and support of the NGB’s some time ago. At a recent meeting held via Zoom between the NGB’s and Bowls Wales a request was made for the Chairman to step aside. At the same time we welcome the appointment of Ken Burton as Interim Chairman, Ken a former WBA & WIBA President is well respected by bowlers throughout Wales and the British Isles. We look forward to working with Ken in the very near future.” In reply, in a long statement on their website, dated August 14th, Bowls Wales comments were many and various and designed to address many points: “BowlsWales are aware of a recent newsletter issued by a number of our member associations over the weekend and wish to make the following statement in response. Firstly, we wish to condemn in the strongest terms the callous personal attacks on our Directors and, in particular, our former Chair Alun Jones. Alun served BowlsWales with distinction for his three year term of office and also worked tirelessly during his role with the Welsh Bowls Federation (WBF) to make a positive difference to bowls in Wales. To suggest that he stepped down as a result of any actions or pressure by the member associations is wholly incorrect and misleading. Alun’s term of office was, as stated above, for three years and Alun chose not to stand again as Chair following his many years of service to BowlsWales and previously to the WBF. BowlsWales wishes to apologise to Alun and his family for the facts being misrepresented in this way, and any hurt that has been caused. Over the three years of BowlsWales, we have worked hard through formal and informal processes to develop constructive and supportive working arrangements with all our member associations in order to help build and develop all aspects of the game in Wales. However, there are factions within some of our member associations that are keen to see the demise of BowlsWales and are willing to misrepresent the facts in order to do so. BowlsWales fully acknowledges and supports the fundamental principle that our member associations manage and administer their specific code of the game. BowlsWales has been clear on this principle since it was founded in 2017 to act as the coordinating body for bowls in Wales. However, the governance arrangements of Sport Wales require us to act, and to be identified, as the national governing body for bowls because we receive public money to develop and support all codes of the game in Wales. This is terminology and should not be confused with any intention of taking over or replacing the management or administration activities historically undertaken by our member associations. Sport Wales can only recognise one body for a sport and that body is referred to as the national governing body or NGB – that’s not to say that other controlling or managing bodies may not exist, but that it is simply the terminology that Sport Wales uses in it’s governance and administration. Sport Wales also acknowledges the need for one modern organisation that has the right skills, expertise and diversity needed to face the challenges of sport and run an effective business. Sport Wales cannot, and will not, fund multiple bodies for one sport, nor can it support gender specific organisations. As such BowlsWales is the organisation that is recognised by Sport Wales for this purpose – and as one that was created to operate as a modern organisation to enable bowls in Wales to thrive. With regard to other claims in the newsletter, World Bowls do not use the ‘national governing body’ terminology as they refer to member associations or bodies as ‘member nation authorities’, and confer a level of authority and administration to these members that we have never sought to challenge.

BowlsWales exists solely to support and develop the game of bowls in Wales, and to ensure that all member associations have governance arrangements and policies in place to support and protect bowlers wherever they play the game. We are looking to grow the game, attract more new bowlers from all walks of life to ensure our clubs and sport can thrive in the future. Our board of directors are all volunteers, all recruited following a transparent and open recruitment process and all bring specific skills to the board to allow it to carry out its responsibilities in a professional and responsible manner. We will shortly be recruiting for several new directors to help fill the skills gaps that we currently have on the board to continue our work. BowlsWales also has the responsibility for the submission of our nominations for Commonwealth Games representation and is responsible for ensuring that monies allocated for elite development and performance are properly accounted for as part of an overarching performance plan for bowls.” So, as you can see, different sides in the current disagreements are currently poles apart, but all still wish the best for the sport in Wales - well at least we hope so! Here at Welsh Bowler, we couldn’t possibly publish our own views, but needless to say we have them. Whoever you place the blame with, be it Bowls Wales, Sport Wales or any NGB, it is up to us all to make our own decisions and to make sure that the whole situation doesn’t cause more harm to the sport we all love for the future. It is to be hoped that given the opportunity to meet and further discuss these issues a compromise position, acceptable to both parties can be achieved which is to the benefit of the sport of bowls throughout Wales.

New manager

for WLIBA u25s

Roger Harvey, who currently bowls at Beaufort BC and Merthyr IBC has been appointed as the new coach for the Welsh Ladies Indoor Bowls Association U25s team. Roger works at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil and has always been around the game, with his father a player at Brynmawr. He takes over the role from Steve Jackson.

A great honour for Anwen It was recently announced that Anwen Butten is to receive a place on the 'Gorsedd' at the Eisteddfod in Tregaron 2021. The Gorsedd of the Bards is an association made up of poets, writers, musicians, artists and other people who have made a distinguished contribution to the Welsh nation, the language, and its culture. Its aim is to honour such individuals and help develop and promote their fields. This is in recognition of her services to bowls and nursing and for her work in promoting the sport through the Welsh language. @AnwenButten

Wonderful fund-raiser from the ladies

The Welsh Women's Lawn Bowls Squad undertook a challenge throughout the whole of July this year. Their aim was to clock up the miles and get from Cardiff, Wales, to Cardiff, New South Wales, Australia - by running, walking or cycling their way there as a team. The team did an admirable job, raising over ÂŁ6,000 in the process. This money will go 75% to Mind Cymru and 25% to the WWBA.

Jan steps down In a statement (shown below) released recently on the WLIBA website, President Jan Lovegrove has stood down from her office: Hello everyone I hope you and your families are all keeping safe and well during these difficult times and am glad to see that we are experiencing some lifting of sanctions. I am writing to inform you that after much soul searching I have decided to stand down from my position as President of the W.L.I.B.A. due to health reasons (My term of office would normally have finished in May at the A.G.M.). I have not come to this decision lightly but the last twelve months has taken a toll on my health and I continue to have the occasional heart flutters, visits to the treadmill and medication checks. I feel I have done my best to support the W.L.I.B.A., officers, players and only missed one day of attending competitions. I now feel it is time I started taking better care of myself as I have no family support. As a newcomer to Ladies Welsh bowls I have enjoyed working with everyone, sharing many laughs and helping to move Ladies Bowls in Wales forward. It has been a pleasure to watch how our junior team continue to improve with age and experience and our Senior Team improving upon last year, I wish all players the very best for the future. My thanks to all parents and families for supporting the players in particularly the Junior Team and to the Officers and members of the Executive Committee. A message from Mike... Fellow Bowlers I extend greetings to the readers of Welsh Bowler and indeed to those further afield on greens , in all the corners of the British Isles . Over the last few months I have sat down several times to try and draft a message to Bowlers throughout the British Isles and as the pandemic situation continued to change so did the content of my message. If it has not happened already, as the weeks pass, the pandemic will undoubtedly impact on the lives of someone near and dear to us and we must all hope and pray for a positive outcome should this occur. My condolence to those who have lost loved ones and friends and to those of you, so far untouched I extend my good wishes for continued safe passage. At the time of writing we have passed through the initial stages and the first peak of infections and deaths and also seen the reduction in numbers which occurred as a result of lockdown and prudent practices.. Regrettably there are signs that as summer comes to an end we are having a resurgence in the infection rates and so, the path forward remains uncertain and It remains impossible to say just how long things will take to settle down and the infection to clear. Like most things, we can anticipate that in the course of time and with Gods good grace, the pandemic will run its course and eventually come to an end. Like many others who have already expressed these sentiments , I have nothing but admiration for the Staff of the NHS and all the other Support and Care Services who continued to put their lives at great risk, particularly during the Spring peak in infections . Their actions were certainly over and above the call of duty . I like many , went out on a Thursday evening to express my appreciation and thanks , in one of the few ways open to us by clapping and making plenty of noise. We do owe it to each and everyone of these very brave and selfless individuals, to support them in any way that we can and It seems to me that the best way for us to do this, is to follow the guidance ( albeit confusing and contradictory on times ) proffered by the Government and other Health Authorities and also National Governing Bodies, so I would ask everyone to sit tight and minimise the chances of spreading the virus as requested by those “in the know” but mainly by using our common sense. Not everyone can go out and take the fight to the enemy and it can be most frustrating, sitting at home , apparently doing nothing helpful. I imagine there are a number of bowlers out there who like me, are now of an age where we are classified as vulnerable and have been required to self-isolate. It is easy to think that this means that we are doing nothing positive, but if you think about it carefully, each person who follows the instructions and stays home and remains successfully untouched by the virus, is contributing , each in their own small way , to slowing it down its ability to spread and in the long term, each person is making a contribution to the battle against the virus. Without our bodies to host the virus, it will have nowhere to go and eventually burn itself out. When feeling frustrated about not being able to get out there and do something positive, I hope you all get some comfort from the words of John Milton, who once said “They also serve who only stand and wait “ It was with great disappointment that the BIBC decided at their March 2020 Meeting to postpone the 2020 BIBC Championships, which were due to be held in LLandrindod Wells , Wales, at the end of June 2020, but given the circumstances, there was no way that the BIBC could have reached any other decision. It was also decided in May 2020 that the Under 25 Championships, due to be held in Ayr, later in the year, would also be cancelled. All being well these events, due to take place in 2020 will all now be deferred to 2021 Season at the same venues intended for 2020. To all the National Champions of 2019 who were due to compete at

Llandrindod Wells, I share your disappointment and do hope that when the event is finally staged, you will all be there safe and well and able to compete. Some of you will already know that, quite independent of the pandemic , the BIBC Secretary Duncan Mclaren and Treasurer Ken Woodcock have decided that they will be stepping down from Office in at the end of the 2020/21 season . These two gentlemen have each given over 10 years of first class service to the B.I.B.C and contributed significantly to the smooth running of the events and to the stability of the organisation, it is no understatement to say that they will be sorely missed, when the time comes. So thank you Duncan and thank you Ken for the professional manner in which you have conducted the affairs of the B.I.B.C. over the last ten years. I was saddened by the recent news of the death of David Bryant C.B.E , he was without doubt the greatest bowler of my generation and in my mind he is certainly up there challenging for the best bowler of all time. When I started bowling back in the 1960’s , it was David Bryants book that I bought to learn about the game, clearly I could not have read it thoroughly or practiced the techniques sufficiently well as I could never ever reproduce his results. Although I never played against him , I was privileged to be at Henderson BC in Auckland , New Zealand in 1988 to witness him winning his very last Outdoor World Singles Championship pulling out an amazing shot against Willie Wood in a memorable last end of bowls . As we all settle down to the dark winter nights , I trust the effects of the pandemic will continue to diminish as the year comes to a close and I wish you all safe passage through the coming months and hope that we can all meet up, back on the greens in the 2021 Season.

Wayne Letman has been re-elected as WLIBA senior team manager, he will be continuing with his ongoing project with the team, and injecting his own enthusiasm for another tenure. In re-taking the position Wayne was eager to thank the members of the selection panel and to highlight the ever-present positive nature of the womens game in Wales.

Just like everyone else, the Welsh Bowls Umpires Association are obviously finding it extremely difficult to set a date for their next Umpires Course. However they are still welcoming applications from bowlers for the next course. The first part of umpire training consists of studying the Law Book and working through a question paper (75 questions) in your own time and at home. Bowl Profiles TIGER The Tiger is a full biased model that was developed because of the increasing need for a bowl that suits a multitude of playing speeds. The Tiger will suit both the competitive player and the more socially minded bowler. The bowl has proved to be one of the most successful ‘TV tournament’ models since its introduction. Due to the ‘Ergo’ profile, the Tiger is appealing to new and existing bowlers who require improved delivery.

TIGER II The Tiger II is the third member of the ‘Ergo’ family of bowls, complimenting the very successful Dreamline and Tiger models. There is a growing trend in many clubs for a slightly wider bias bowl than the Dreamline. The Tiger II is a mid-biased bowl that will suit the player looking for a multi-purpose set of bowls. It is a contemporary design of bowl with a gentle and predictable trajectory, and is the widest drawing of the ‘narrow’ biased bowls currently available. It is highly suited to all players,

including skips who may require a bowl that has a relatively strong finish to draw around short bowls in the head.

TIGER PRO

Given the huge successes of both the Tiger and the Tiger II, it was found that top bowlers were still seeking for a bias choice between the Tiger and Tiger II lines. After a period of testing, the Tiger Pro bias was manufactured as that ‘in between bias bowl’ that is much sought after. The Pro has become the fourth member of the ‘Ergo shape’ range. To be approved by World Bowls Ltd one day and used by Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby the next when winning the World mixed pairs says a lot about the quality and trust the top players have in the bias consistency of the Henselite brand.

CLASSIC II The Classic II is the original narrow biased bowl. This narrow version has less bias than the original Classic model. Manufactured with a traditional Classic bias for bowlers who can play on all types of green and require a consistent draw. The Classic II, with its midstrength bias, is well suited to slower outdoor greens and also performs well on faster indoor carpets in the UK. Distinctive finish commonly referred to as a ‘hockey stick bias’ and recognised for its ability to draw around cluttered heads.

GREENS & GREEN MAINTENANCE

SISIS assists at Pitmedden SISIS, the mower manufacturer who are prevalent around many Welsh bowls clubs, have been helping out in Scotland. Two machines have helped Ian Fraser, Head Greenkeeper at Pitmedden BC in Aberdeenshire, turn around the fortunes of the green and transform it into one of the best in Scotland. Ian and his family have a long affinity with Pitmedden Bowls Club. In the 1930’s his grandfather became the Head Greenkeeper for three decades before passing the baton to Ian’s father who then maintained the green for many years after. Although it was inevitable that Ian himself would eventually follow in their footsteps, this didn’t happen for a number of years. When he did accept the position of head greenkeeper, he quickly found that he had his work cut out, as he explains. “Upon my return to the club it is safe to say that the green needed a lot of attention,” he said. “I was determined to get the green back in good shape and I started doing my research and learning the biology of turf and soil. What became apparent was that we desperately needed some new equipment.” While on the hunt for some new turf maintenance equipment, Ian attended a Dennis and SISIS bowling green maintenance seminar in Aberdeen. It was here that he became acquainted with a range of SISIS machinery, and as a result, he purchased two pieces of equipment with the help of a grant from his local Windmill Community Trust. Finding a machine that would help with aeration was his main priority as he explains. “We identified that aeration was going to be one the most important tasks in getting the green back to being functional again,” said Ian. “At that time, we were hiring a lot of machinery and because we were using them so much, we decided that we needed our own. We found what we were looking for in the SISIS Dart.” The SISIS Dart is an independently powered vertical action aerator and has a working depth of up to 100mm (4 inches) which can be easily adjusted from the operator’s position using the balanced depth control lever. Powered by a 6.5hp engine, the unit can also be fitted with a wide range of interchangeable tines to meet the operator’s requirements making it ideal as a bowling green aerator. “I use the Dart once a month and it gives us great results every time,” continued Ian. “We have a nice variety of the interchangeable tines which help for a number of different tasks. It was the first step to improving the health of the green and it has worked wonders.” Ian’s second purchase with the grant was the SISIS Auto Rotorake MK 5 - a self-propelled heavy-duty pedestrian scarifier. It is designed for the removal and control of thatch on fine turf and features a contra-rotating reel with specially designed tipped blades for a clean, consistent cut and maximum thatch removal. A variety of maintenance tasks can also be carried out due to a selection of seven different interchangeable reels. Ian purchased the verticutting reel, the scarifying reel, and the brush to accompany the machine and believes that it covers all bases. “The Auto Rotorake MK 5 has been a heaven-send and I would say it has been our best ever purchase. It just does everything you need to keep a green in the best possible playing condition. “I will scarify with it at the start and at the end of the season; I’ll verticut once a month and then run the Rolaspike Reel over the green maybe 2 or 3 times a month. The brush also prepares the turf nicely after verticutting or scarifying. I would recommend it to any greenkeeper. “These two pieces of SISIS equipment play an integral role in the maintenance programme here and have been instrumental in improving the green.” www.sisis.com
