Montgomeryshire President

This year’s President of Montgomeryshire County Bowling Association is Barry Fleming, who was elected at the Associations AGM.

Barry was previously President of Montgomeryshire in 2010 and has a lifetime of service to the sport.

A member of the Machynlleth Bowling Club, Barry has been active in Montgomeryshire Bowls since the 1970’s, Welsh Bowls since 1980's and a serving member of the WBA Selection Committee, being President in 1988, British Isles Bowls- President in 2004 and also served on the World Bowls Council.

Congratulations to Kerry Packwood on taking this season’s WLIBA Champion of Champions title.

Kerry beat Ann Pike in the final recently at Dinefwr IBC (13-0, 12-3), after defeating Tracy Gowan in the semis.

Ann reached the final after a hard-fought semi against Paula Summerfield (7-9, 11-9, 0-2)

Sad news

The WWBA were recently extremely sad to announce that Immediate Past President Mrs Beryl Jenkins has passed away.

Beryl was a lovely lady, an avid bowler and a great ambassador for our Sport and will be sadly missed by everyone in the Welsh bowling world. Our thoughts are with her family at this time.

Tri Nations event at Newport

Greenslade triumphant Jason Greenslade, along with his partner Les Gillett, won the pairs competition at the World Indoor Bowls Championships in England after overcoming the Welsh duo Damian Doubler and Daniel Salmon recently.

Greenslade and Gillett won the superbly contested final 7-7, 8-6 at the Potters Leisure Resort in Hoptonon-Sea in Norfolk.

Great news for the young game in Wales

This year’s Tri Nations tournament will be hosted in Wales at Newport Indoor bowls stadium.

The event will take place from Friday 21st April, Saturday 22nd and the morning of Sunday 23rd April.

The tournament includes teams of visually impaired and para bowlers (bowlers with physical disabilities).

Teams from Wales, Scotland and England are taking part.

The Welsh Team Director is Gerwyn Owen of Disability Sport Wales and the Manager/coach is John Wilson.

Merthyr charity match

Recently a charity bowls match was played at Merthyr Tydfil indoor bowls club, the beneficiaries being the NSPCC. The picture shows Merthyr Tydfil committee member Rebecca Rees receiving a cheque for £440 on their behalf from the club international player Pauline Price, together with members of the MTIBC committee.

TIGER II The Tiger II is the third member of the ‘Ergo’ family of bowls, complimenting the very successful Dreamline and Tiger models.

There is a growing trend in many clubs for a slightly wider bias bowl than the Dreamline.

The Tiger II is a mid-biased bowl that will suit the player looking for a multi-purpose set of bowls.

It is a contemporary design of bowl with a gentle and predictable trajectory, and is the widest drawing of the ‘narrow’ biased bowls currently available.

TIGER PRO

Given the huge successes of both the Tiger and the Tiger II, it was found that top bowlers were still seeking for a bias choice between the Tiger and Tiger II lines. After a period of testing, the Tiger Pro bias was manufactured as that ‘in between bias bowl’ that is much sought after. The Pro has become the fourth member of the ‘Ergo shape’ range. To be approved by World Bowls Ltd one day and used by Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby the next when winning the World mixed pairs says a lot about the quality and trust the top players have in the bias consistency of the Henselite brand.

CLASSIC II The Classic II is the original narrow biased bowl. This narrow version has less bias than the original Classic model.

Manufactured with a traditional Classic bias for bowlers who can play on all types of green and require a consistent draw.

The Classic II, with its midstrength bias, is well suited to slower outdoor greens and also performs well on faster indoor carpets in the UK. Distinctive finish commonly referred to as a ‘hockey stick bias’ and recognised for its ability to draw around cluttered heads.

Relief for bowling greens...

Terrain Aeration offers a specialist soil decompaction and deep aeration service and has a twenty year history of successful treatments of bowling greens. In this time the company has encountered many situations where waterlogging and flooding on greens had prevented play and where normal aeration has failed to provide a long-term solution.

Typically there have been difficulties with water ponding during heavy rainfall and in one instance the club estimated that spanning sixty years more than fifty thousand people had walked over the club green which, combined with the accumulation of top dressing and use of machinery, had all contributed to compaction leading to severe waterlogging.

The Terralift Scamper machinery used by Terrain Aeration is purpose-built to ensure excellent results without surface disruption or any loss of availability for play. This specialist treatment prevents waterlogging, improves drainage, cures anaerobic conditions and results in improved firmness and rapid drying, ensuring the surface is always available for use. Once treated, grass root growth is improved creating a healthier

sward more resistant to wear. Recovery following thunderstorm intensity rain is very rapid.

So how does it work? Treatment is completed in one working day and access for the Terralift machine can be gained through a pedestrian gateway. The Terralift hydraulically hammers a probe 1½" diameter one metre deep into the soil before it releases a blast of compressed air to fracture and fissure the soil. The air pressure is adjusted to merely cause the turf to shudder.

On the tail end of the air blast, dried milled seaweed is incorporated which sticks to the walls of the fractures and over a period of time, swells and contracts with the moisture content in the soil. This process helps to keep the fractures open. The probe is removed, the machine moves forward and the process repeated in two metre spacings on a staggered grid pattern.

Approximately 400 injection sites are made across the green which allow water to drain from the surface into the subsoil almost instantly. The probe holes are then backfilled with aggregate and then the top 1”2” completed with the greenkeeper’s own top dressing to encourage new root growth over the holes.

Ideal for overseeding and aerating small areas on bowling greens, the Bray-Seed Slotter can see a 50% saving of grass seed when overseeding while creating the ideal pocket for rapid seed germination, maximising survival and strengthening root structure. Play and mowing can continue uninterrupted, making this product ideal for small area aeration where compaction is a problem, allowing for the infiltration of air, water and nutrients.

With a working width of 250mm (10”); unique features include an interchangeable head allowing for either a slotter or spiker head to be fitted.

It is imperative that top dressings are thoroughly worked into the sward to avoid smothering of the turf. The use of a SISIS Dragmat will assist greenkeepers here.

The SISIS Dragmats are ideal for rubbing in dressings and routine surface renovation on small areas. Available in 1.35m wide hand pulled, 1.8m wide hand pulled/towed and 2.7m towed versions which can be drawn behind a tractor, or in

conjunction with a top-dresser allows for easy use.

Try to brush off the moisture each morning using a Dragbrush as doing so will reduce the risk of a disease outbreak. The SISIS Dragbrush is a heavy duty dragbrush which can be used for brushing in top dressing, removal of dew and for brushing and levelling hard porous areas.

It is available in a 1.8m width.

There has been a move, in recent years, to operating a mix of both mowers and rollers as part of the regular maintenance programme. So, when higher green speeds are required, both mowers and rollers are used. The use of this practice can result in reducing plant stress while retaining a consistent playing surface. The SISIS Trulevel roller is ideal for use on a bowling green and can be either pushed or pulled with ease to firm the soil without compaction. Overriding action on slight hollows allows areas to be firmly rolled while low areas are left so that the playing surface is progressively levelled. Outer rollers can also be raised concentrating the weight on the centre roller if desired.

The SISIS Trulute is a must for any greenkeeper maintaining a bowling green. It will quickly glide over the surface of the green and work the dressing into the surface - ensure you concentrate on the edges first. One side of the Trulute has a smooth edge for spreading top dressing and levelling while the other side has sharp edges for working in top dressings and levelling-back high spots. Fitted with a folding handle allows for ease of transportation and storage.

The SISIS Aerdrain Fork is a simple but effective aeration fork with interchangeable tines which can be used all-year-round on bowling greens. There are two interchangeable tines available – 127mm long solid tine and 127mm long hollow tine. The hollow tine can be used to reduce high points by removing a core on an acute angle.
