St John’s Preparatory School 2011

2011 Headmaster’s Speech Mr Corrado Trinci, our Guest of Honour, Mr Themba Ndebele, Chairman of the Baord, Governors, Patrons, Invited Guests, Staff, Ladies & Gentlemen, Old Boys and Gentlemen of St John's, it gives me great pleasure to present to you my report on 2011.

three first team sports plus top 5 in the class – but for others the search has to go much deeper – alternative sports and pursuits are encouraged and recognized and our teachers and coaches try their level best to find something to praise – a little spark to blow on and coax into – hopefully one day – a raging fire. So when considering the question has 2011 been a good year for St John's – has it been successful - it is with all these differences and variances in mind that we answer, easy? No – but successful – definitely yes!

Taking into consideration all of our achievements and results both inside the classrooms and out in the playing fields it has undoubtedly been another great year in the life of our school. Has it been easy – I think I would have to say no. Times are still tough in this economic environment and along with that go a myriad of other problems. We are a wonderful school but very normal in that we have a huge variance in all areas of life. We have some exceptionally bright boys and others who struggle; we have some very talented boys in the arts and the sporting arenas and others who have not yet found their niche. We have some very wealthy parents and others who barely make it from month to month. We have children who come from stable family backgrounds and children who hardly see their parents and a fair number who only have one. We have many whose reading is heard, if at all, by a domestic worker and others whose mothers have the time and the wherewithal to give endless help to their boys in all areas, including looking up extra facts on the Internet. The mind boggles at how many would not cope if we were to operate like a great many schools worldwide where homework is given and done and received back electronically! Zimbabwe is simply not ready for this yet but it does not mean that we should not be working towards this. We should and are but the implications for our clientele are huge.

We have provided the most amazing environment in which the boys have been able to grow and experience conditions which expose them to all of life's lessons. There have been lessons and opportunities in the Arts, Drama, music, sports, academics and many more arenas. There have been competitions to enter and matches to be played and we have learnt to win and to lose. I agree with Vince Lombardi when he said, “winning is not everything but wanting to win is”. Many have been individual prize winners and members of prize winning teams or just been a part of something special like the cast of the school play or the choir or the much envied survival club. Others have their special little group which plays its soccer or cricket in the morning or even just been part of a small group of 3 or 4 who meet and chat at break time or before school. I could never recall all the successes of our boys throughout the year in every area of participation but here are just some of the more tangible and high profile successes :-

We have some children who are taken home at lunch, brought back for afternoon games, homework all done and we have others who are left here all day and collected after dark.

Our 1st XI cricket was the first to open the batting, if you'll excuse the expression, when they travelled to Falcon College where they took part in and won the coveted trophy beating Springvale in the final. This team ended up have a great season which included a most valuable festival in Pretoria where they played boys a full year older and a head or two taller. We lost two matches and won one but the boys did us all proud and hugely impressed the South Africans on and off the field with their competitive nature, young skills and general manners and deportment. This side made it to the finals of the Lilfordia Day/Night competition but rain and generator failure prevented the final from being played. The final Quadrangular Tournament of the year saw their match with Whitestone's being rained off but they beat Ruzawi and Springvale and after that went on to beat an exceptionally strong Chipembere side by 4 wickets in the last over. We can safely say that we ended the season in pole position. The following were selected for the National U/13 squad of excellence : Alistair Frost, Miles Garnett, Graham Curtis and Damian White and these

We have some children whose I.T. skills are ahead of some teachers (and parents!!) and others whose only sight of a computer happens at school. We have children who have extra lessons and extra coaching all week long – not necessarily because they need it but because they want to excel – all this whilst we have others who barely make it through what is required of them. It is against this backdrop that we teach, and coach and mentor and try to extract the best that we can out of your boys. We try to look into each boy's life and assess his circumstances to see what he is up against in an attempt to have him succeed as best as he personally can. It really is our desire to try to ensure that each boy finds something that he is good at – something that gives him the self confidence that is vital for him to feel secure and part of a team. In some cases it is so easy – three first 6

St John’s Preparatory School 2011 younger players as well and our hockey coaches can be pleased with their efforts. Harare West : Russell Mubaya, Simbarashe Gumbo and Tako Nyabadza. A Zim U14 Squad of Excellence: Oscar Van Oudtshoorn, Desmond Annandale, Graham Curtis, Alistair Frost, Austin Rwodzi and Ian Kloppers.

same boys plus Amaar Adam, Panashe Mbanje and Matthew Davenport made the Mashonaland Eagles U13 side. The Colts 'A' team had a great season and won the Barwick Festival and the Hellenic Day/Night competition. Their improvement from last year was nothing short of spectacular. Well done to Mr Chauhan and the boys. In all we fielded 12 Interschool teams ensuring that almost all our boys had a school match and we had 5 unbeaten teams!

In hockey 9 teams were fielded with a very high standard of hockey on display. The 1st XI tour to South Africa will go down as one of the best ever. Not only were the results outstanding with the boys playing 7 schools, winning 4, drawing 2 and losing only one game – on Astro Turf (!!) but a constant stream of positive feedback on their manners and behavior was forthcoming. Remember too the age difference. There is much talent with our younger players as well and our hockey coaches can be pleased with their efforts.

Of great interest to us was seeing one of our ex coaches, Malcolm Waller, scoring 99 not out against New Zealand recently in an historic one day win and our very own Old Boy Kyle Jarvis getting 5 for 64 in the Test Match which we so nearly won. Our Cross-country runners were superb again and our A team won all three major Interschools events, the Gateway 1/11, Lilfordia 3 woods 1/24 and the Ruzawi event 1/10 beating all boarding schools into the bargain – a huge feat for a day school and a result of very hard work from Mr Ndimutseyi and the runners.

Boys selected to the Harare Province Teams are – 'A' team; Alistair Frost (C), Graham Curtis and Kieran Robinson and to the Harare B side were; Martin Eeson and Mufaro Chareka and chosen for the National Squad of Excellence were Alistair Frost, Graham Curtis, Martin Eeson and Mufaro Chareka. A superb effort all round.

The Duathlon boys were a really keen and enthusiastic group who acquitted themselves with immense courage and achieved great success with Tony O'Riordan, Jared Ellse and Connor Higgins being the best juniors whilst Martin Eeson, Ryan Smith and Cameron Butler were the best three seniors. We fielded 12 rugby teams and the boys played with true grit and determination and a fine standard of rugby and sportsmanship was displayed all round. Highlights of the season were the 1st XV winning the coveted Super 8 trophy and the Bowl in the Hellenic Day/Night competition. The 2XV was unbeaten as usual as were the powerful grade 4's. The Colts A won all their games at the Springvale Festival and won the Bowl in the Hellenic Day/Night. Judging by our strong little Grade 3 boys we can go into next season with great confidence. The following senior players made the provincial sides :Harare North:- (which won the Inter Prov Comp) Mufaro Chareka, Oscar Van Oudtshoorn, Ian Kloppers, Austin Rwodzi, Graham Curtis, Miles Garnett, Desmond Annandale & Alistair Frost. Harare South:- Makanaka Timba, Tadiwa Motsi, Aiden Blignaut & Chase Onorati.

So strong was our sport this year that we were awarded the first prizes for swimming, hockey, rugby and tennis at the Provincial Awards Ceremony for Harare Province. Mrs O'Donoghue has extracted and encouraged such a high standard of art from the boys with the following excelling – Douglas Dorward won 1st prize while Simba Ndoro was runner up in the Spar design a bag competition – each won a computer. Deven Jordaan and Takudzwa Mawire had their work selected for the Verandah Gallery Calendar Launch 2012. Bevan Coveley won the best overall picture for the World Tourism Day competition and the school was chosen for the best contributions from a school. In the 2012 Olympics Quilt Competition in London – Nicholas Balfour's piece was selected from the Zimbabwean entrants and will be woven into the original quilt for the coming Olympics. 24 pictures were selected for a commercial restaurant guide and we are still awaiting the results of the Toyota design a “dream car” competition. To cap it all in the Allied Arts Competition we had 33 3rd Grade certificate winners, 28 2nd grade, 10 1sts and 2 1st+'s whilst James-Dean Harrison was awarded Honours.

Although there weren't a great many volleyball matches this is a sport which was very much enjoyed by many of our boys and they thoroughly deserved their almost unblemished season. They played with skill, spirit and enthusiasm.

In hockey 9 teams were fielded with a very high standard of hockey on display. The 1st XI tour to South Africa will go down as one of the best ever. surfaces which should help cope with our increasing number of interested players and add a new and exciting dimension to the game. Our soccer players were outstanding again and whilst our senior teams were very strong our colts teams were spectacular. They were not only unbeaten at the junior level but they were without peer. Congratulations to our coaches and our lads. We look forward to a few devastating years of soccer! A huge compliment was bestowed upon our boys when they were asked by CAPS UNITED to play against the C.U. U13 team in a huge curtain raiser to C.U. vs Shooting Stars at the National Sports stadium two weeks ago. It was a great event and our boys went into half time 1-0 up. It was only well into the game when we, rightly, gave many substitutes a chance, that the CAPS team took control and won 7 -2. So impressed were they that we have now been asked to play against Chirodzo Primary School as a curtain raiser to Dynamos vs Motor Action at the National Sports Stadium this Sunday.

We have spread ourselves widely this year and have given your civvies day money to Island Hospice, Kidzcan, Emerald Hill Children's Home and have supported the SPCA. We have donated mountains of books to many schools, Hallingbury and Hatcliffe in Harare, Thornicroft School in Ruwa and Ume River school in Kariba. We have donated books and sporting equipment to Chiedza Children's Home during a most rewarding visit to them and our Infants produced mountains of crackers and gifts for Miracle Missions. The cast and parents thoroughly enjoyed “The Giant Slayer” put on earlier in the year and our choir sang beautifully in the Combined Schools' Choir recently. Well so much for the achievement of much of our school but now we come to the “how” point – by that I mean the teachers and coaches. We have a truly great school with dedicated personnel working tirelessly with your boys. We cannot thank Mrs Ellis, Director of Academics and all our teachers and coaches enough for the hours that they put into their every activity be it in the classrooms, on stage or out in the playing fields. They have given of their best and been on many developmental workshops. Much is required of them and much is given.

As you know all our boys participate thoroughly when it comes to athletics and a tremendous amount of skill and discipline is imparted in a short 6 week season. We have many fine athletes and we continue to shock opposition schools by coming 2nd in the A division without anything like the sprinting speed of our opponents. We do this by teamwork in the relays, finesse in the takeovers and skill and technique in the jumps and hurdles. For this our congratulations go to the boys for their teamwork and effort and the coaches for working so hard with the athletes. Well done to Mr Mbundire and his team.

Mrs Wallace and her excellent Infants' Department do such great things preparing our little men for the rigours of life up the school and their galas, sports days and Infants' plays are the highlight of the year. Our Remedial Department remains the envy of many and such valuable assistance is given to so many of our boys by Rose Mackenzie, Jo Roger, and Robin Taylor, our resident Occupational Therapist. They do an outstanding job.

Whilst squash is not a huge sport at the moment, Jason Franklin, Miguel Roscoe and Declan Ralphs played for the Zim U11 team in S.A. Our swimmers have excelled yet again – winning the Pisces Gala with Chisipite, the Flippers Gala, the Ruzawi Gala and the main 'A' division of the Inter-schools gala for the 17th year running. Very well done to Mrs Derry and Mrs Tanner and to the sports coaches who take swimming plus of course our boys who train exceptionally hard. We have too many medal winners in all the various galas to mention them all, but please take note of some recorded in our programme. Sadly the Zimbabwe team will only be selected this weekend but it is very likely that Desmond Annandale, Chase Onorati and Martin Eeson will make the side. Honours ties will follow for the successful candidates.

Domi

We had to bid farewell, early in the year to Mrs Wendy Scott who not only had her own health problems at the time but she lost her husband as well. We are really grateful to her for her fine handling of her grade 7 boys.

nus Pastor

We had our first Inter-schools equestrian event for a number of years this year and I was so proud of our boys and their parents for helping this to happen and for doing so well. We won our section and the Edwards and Annesley brothers together with Gavin Bissett did us proud.

Sadly we say goodbye to two of our most dedicated members of staff at the end of this year. Mrs Banks has been solid and reliable in every regard and her patience and devotion to her grade ones will be sorely missed. She leaves us to take up a great opportunity to run a nursery school with a grade one class and we wish her all the best . Mrs Moor leaves us after 13 years of absolute dedication to her classes over the years. She has had three fine boys through St John's, one of whom was Headboy and they have all been fine sportsmen. She will enjoy a well earned rest from the pressure of teaching and I am very grateful to her for agreeing to present our prizes here tonight.

BMX continues to be pursued very intensely by several of our boys, mentioned in the profile but I know that the following have been outstanding in their endeavours –

I am so pleased to be able to tell you that we have Miss Sarah Alridge and Miss Shelley Gibbons both freshly trained and degreed, join us in the New Year. 8

St John’s Preparatory School 2011 I also have great pleasure in announcing that our management team will be strengthened in 2012 with the inclusion on the staff of Mr Ryan Barbour, currently housemaster and teacher at Peterhouse. Mr Barbour joins us as Director of the upper school and a grade 7 teacher and it will be comforting for some of you to know that he is actually junior school trained.

The ladies in our front offices, Rena Miller and Di Russell in the finance department with Mr Geoff Day over at the College are really solid and reliable which is so important in this day and age. Mrs Aly Dickinson and Cheryl Passaportis do an amazing job dealing with the real pressures of the everyday running of a school plus the myriad of interferences that come with the job. People still flock to their hatch every day looking for places and it is very difficult to handle these desperate parents. My considerable thanks to them all.

On to more of those who are so vital to all of our successes – The P.L.C. and Grade 5 fundraisers. These groups have been “chaired” by Mrs Corinne Butler and Mr Rudolph De Wet respectively and they and their hard working committees have done us proud. There have been some big events this year, mainly the World Cup Rugby Festival with the boys and Dad's making teams, the Camp Out and the Fireworks Display and the many occasions for which catering was provided. These were all great events in the end but only after some exceptionally hard work by everyone involved. You have no idea how proud and grateful I was to witness the way in which the fireworks evening unfolded. It was an incredible advert for our school and though most of you involved will go unmentioned we all offer you our deep gratitude for your outstanding help in putting our school in the public's eye with such favour. We could not have done this without the use of the College fields for which we too are most grateful. The funds realized, some $30 000 will go directly to the purchase of as many Interactive Whiteboards as possible in an ongoing bid to have one in each classroom throughout the school. We will be placing an order for 8 in the next couple of weeks although we will still need computers to go with them.

Mr Ted Perepeczko and Mr Kevin Whatman, our Estate Manager and Campus Manager and their teams of Support Staff and Maintenance crew have given their all to make our schools the envy of many and they have a special vote of thanks. We are truly endebted to you the parents for all your support of your boys and our fine school in so many ways. Your help with teas, coaching, transport, listening to reading and support at functions and matches all go to strengthen our school. Turning now to our prizewinners and leavers. Well done gentlemen, this is a big night for you. You have done yourselves and your parents proud. To succeed in most schools is a fine achievement – to succeed at St John's is a great achievement. Austin, Chase and Martin, you have been an exemplary trio at the top of the school and you have with the help of the white shirts led the school brilliantly. Grade 7 leavers, you have been a delight. You have displayed talent, interest, energy and above all a caring attitude top those under you. I wish you everything of the best in the years to come. I have one piece of advice for you when your mum or your girlfriend says, “What, what was that?” – she's not asking you to repeat yourself she is giving you the chance to change what you said!

We are very grateful to ABC Bank for the donation of a wonderful digital scoreboard which will come in the New Year. Mr Ndebele and his fellow governors have once again put many hours into our school. Policies are always under the microscope and ways of improving and streamlining things are being explored. Their's is in many ways a thankless task but I can assure you of their dedication and hours of hard work. Very many thanks to you all for everything that you give to our schools.

Domi

To those returning, have safe and well deserved holidays and we look forward to seeing you all invigorated and ready for the challenges of 2012.

Swimming Report The beginning of the season was so terribly messy and hectic, it was difficult to envisage that we would end up with a highly motivated, well disciplined team of swimmers - but we did, and are extremely proud of what the boys managed to accomplish in the pool.

that little bit earlier in order to get your boys to these. It was much appreciated and the effort certainly paid off. Our boys swam their hearts out, winning all but four of their races and this enabled us to bring home the trophy for the seventeenth consecutive year – a truly magnificent effort.

As usual, we kicked off with the Flippers Gala, where our “A” Team came first and the “B” Team gained a most respectable 4th place. Whilst this is an informal event, it is most useful in that it gives the coaches the opportunity to see where their teams' strengths and weaknesses lie.

The final swimming meeting of the season was out at Ruzawi. This is never an easy gala as one tends to think of the Inter Schools' as being the climax of the season and thus it is quite difficult to keep the momentum going. Also, the majority of these races are individual events – something that we are not used to. Our boys, however, exceed all expectations and beat the closest rival school by 45 points! They also managed to break three records – Liam Davis and Desmond Annandale broke the U/12 and U/13 Individual Medley records with Nicholas Balfour breaking the U/11 Backstroke record.

This was followed by the Pisces Gala where our boys teamed up with the Chisipite girls to swim against a Hartmann/Convent, Ruzawi/Bishopslea combination. Whilst we were terribly proud to gain a first place with our “A” Team and a 4th place with our “B” Team, we were disqualified in a number of events and realised that we had some work to do on our take-overs, touches and turns before the Inter Schools' Gala which was looming on the horizon. It also become apparent that both Convent and Hartmann House had “upped their game” tremendously and were set to give us some tough competition.

Thanks to the parents for their amazing support and to the swimming captain, Chase Onorati and vice captain, Martin Eeson for carrying out their duties effectively. Full senior colours were awarded to: Chase Onorati, Martin Eeson, Desmond Annandale, Christian Wright and Ian Kloppers.

Hence the commencement of early morning training sessions!! Thank you to all of the parents for getting up

Volleyball A and B Both teams played four matches each – two home and two away. Hats off to our B team which won all their matches. The A team won three and lost one. The A team lost in their final match of the season as most of the regular players were absent – attending the Combined Schools Choir, which is a very important event on the school calendar. The depleted side that we fielded put up a very brave fight to lose to our hosts (Cornway) 2 – 1. It was a very closely contested match as we lost 25 – 23 in the final set. huge boost in confidence for some as they are finding talents they did not know they had! Huge congratulations must go to the duathlon squad of 2011, not only for their outstanding efforts and results, but also for great sportsmanship. Well done to our captains Ryan Smith and Curtis Stangroom and our Vice Captain Reece Williams – I could never have asked for a better combination of leaders. Farewell to our talented “2011” year and welcome to our Gr 2 boys next year and new athletes for the 2012 season.

Duathlon is a very challenging but rewarding sport, consisting of a run/cycle/run. St John's have been competing in duathlon now for four years, starting with a small squad of 8 athletes in 2008 with outstanding ability. We have now grown in numbers to have a squad ranging from 30 to 50 athletes with a much greater range of ability. This has created a great vibe in the squad and a

Cricket S.A. Tour - WHPS Festival 2011 1st XI Cricket The boys had a hugely successful “tour to South Africa” when they took part in the Waterkloof House Preparatory School cricket festivals in Pretoria.

pulled off a huge upset. This was indeed a great moment for our young lads. The last day saw the teams playing 40 over matches much as we are used to. We were drawn against the mighty Ridge School which had demolished Whitestones on the first day, scoring 320 odd and having one of their batsmen making 200 against them.

We knew from the outset that we would be up against bigger boys, a year older than ours but were really keen to have a go and learn all that we could from the experience – and learn we did! We were to play declaration cricket for the first two matches with a maximum of 120 overs to be bowled in the day. This, in itself, was to be a challenge as our longest matches to date are about 35 overs each, 70 in a day.

Our never say die attitude and brilliant fielding saw us restricting them to just under 4.5 runs an over whilst taking 8 of their wickets. This set up what could have been a great match. Sadly this was not to be and once again our opener got a “roughie” first over and the other opener followed closely. We found ourselves 10 for 3 at lunch and whilst we batted on in admiral fashion, a win was a bridge too far.

Our first match saw us up against a powerful team from Pridwin in Johannesburg. Pridwin batted first and amassed a huge total of 288 runs in 57 overs BUT we got them all out which was a huge feather in our cap! Our task now was to try to bat the afternoon out and force a draw unless of course we found ourselves in the unlikely position of nearing their score! Unfortunately we were unable to last more than 45 overs before losing our last man. This had, however taken us to nearing 5 o'clock which was a great achievement in itself under the circumstances. The total of 126 was largely immaterial as we had taken the decision fairly early on when catching their score was not on, to “close-shop” and only play the balls that were necessary.

All in all this was, in my opinion, a great experience for our boys – one in which they learned many lessons both on and off the field. My personal observations are that we play with unquestionable team spirit and drive. We have many very useful bowlers both spin and pace, but we have no excuse for the number of wides that we bowl. This one aspect alone costs us anywhere up to 35-40 runs a match which in many instances would be top score. This has to be eradicated. Our fielding is, in the main, outstanding. Our batting needs to mature. Many of our boys have most of the shots but they need to play them in the right circumstances.

For the cricketing connoisseurs around this was a most interesting stage of the game where Pridwin were challenged by our tenacious stance and had to pull out all the stops to pressurize our final batsmen and where our lads learnt a great deal about resisting pressure in this way. The obvious difference between declaration cricket and the limited overs game that we traditionally play was clearly exemplified here.

As we were playing older, faster boys we were, almost from the start, forced into a defensive role with the bat which was sad as we all know that with less need to “survive” (due to the matches being declaration games and us being on the receiving end of things) we can bat with a great deal more confidence than was evident.

Domi

r o t s a n u P s The second day saw us drawn against Clifton (Nottingham Most importantly, the boys enjoyed the tour and

Road) from Durban and our boys were determined to put into practice the subtle lessons learned from the day before.

undoubtedly we came away from South Africa with much credit. It was great to have so many parents join us on tour . Together with Mr Mutare our thanks to them for their support and our considerable thanks to Emma Frost for her outstanding role in organizing the tour from this end and to Corinne Butler for bearing the brunt of most of the scoring.

Our new venue was St Albans College, a most beautiful school, but we were put on what can only be described as a challenging wicket as all the better tracks were being used by the senior schools who were also playing at this venue. Sadly one of our openers experienced an unplayable delivery first ball of the entire match and was bowled by one which stayed really low. Caution was clearly going to be the order of the day and our lads battled incredibly well to get to 145 just after lunch after a delayed start to the day. With great hope, excitement and anticipation our boys took to the field where their efforts were outstanding. We became known as the best fielding side at the festival. With this approach and some accurate bowling (interspersed with a frustrating amount of wides!) we managed to restrict Clifton to 123 runs and

I end with these words from Krinesan Moodley, Director of Sport, Waterkloof House Prep in his reply to my thank you letter :“I am so glad you enjoyed the festival and made the trip down to be with us. It was a great privilege to have your boys here. I must commend them on their approach to the game and never say die attitude. It was so imperative to see commitment of this nature.” M N MACKENZIE MANAGER 38

Cricket (CONTINUED) SENIOR CRICKET 1st XI What a fine year we had with the 1st XI cricket. I would like to congratulate this wonderful group of clever cricketers on an outstanding season. It has been a real pleasure coaching you this season. Right from the beginning the whole team developed in attitude, discipline on the field and belief in themselves. This enabled them to overcome opposition with ease. Captain Alistair Frost showed great leadership in all disciplines of the game – he has to be commended for this. Vice-Captain Miles Garnett, working with Alistair, were a force to be reckoned with.

The season will always be remembered for a complete clean sweep against Ruzawi beating them in all three fixtures. We also recorded back to back victories against a very good Chipembere side. Our boys held their own and defended what looked like paltry scores. Well done to Miles Garnett, Alistair Frost, Panashe Mbanje, Graham Curtis and Damiain White for being selected to represent Mash Eagles Franchise team. After the Inter Provincial tournament Alistair Frost, Damiain White and Miles Garnett were selected from the Zimbabwe U13 side.

Alistair Frost's 95 not out playing against Hellenic was absolutely superb as was Miles Garnett's 89 runs on the same day. Matthew Davenport proved to be a good solid opening batsman too as he managed to score runs consistently throughout the season.

Finally, the tour to South Africa was a learning experience. We came up against some boys who were a year and a half older than ours. Our boys tried hard and never gave up. A big thank you must go to all the parents for their support and sponsorship on this tour. Thank you too to our tour manager, Mr Mackenzie for the refurbishment of the school Asro Turf cricket nets and organizing a bowling machine which the boys put to good use. Mr Gwande and the ground staff have been excellent in preparing wickets and fields throughout the year. Good luck in the seasons to come and please keep your love for cricket growing.

Although almost everyone contributed a lot with the bat, special mention must go to the spin duo of Panashe Mbanje and Amaar Adam for claiming the most wickets. We managed to retain the Falcon Junior Cricket Trophy for the second consecutive year – a truly magnificent effort. A combination of bad light and rain showers saw our 1st XI lost to Ruzawi in the bowl-outs at Lilfordia Day/Night Festival final.

Cricket (CONTINUED) COLTS A Bowler Award. Brett Hounsell got the best Fielding award and Michael Booth won contribution Colts Cricket award.

This year the Colts A team went from strength to strength, proving once again that St. John's cricket is a Powerhouse amongst school boy cricket. The year did not start off as we would have liked it to, losing a couple of games in the 1st term.

I like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who supported boys and me all year and trusting the decisions I made. Also to Rene Booth and Emma Frost and the mums for the lovely teas we had all year. To those I have forgotten to mention, thank you.

With a lot of hard work we managed to change that in the 3rd term only losing to Ruzawi and Chipembere. The highlights of our season were winning the Barwick festival beating Ruzawi in the semi-finals and Hellenic in the finals and the big one, the Hellenic Day/Night festival beating a very strong Chipembere team in the finals and winning it for the first time in the history of the tournament.

I would finally like to thank the boys for an outstanding year! To see you all develop from a team low on confidence and self belief to a team roaring with excitement and enthusiasm. It was all due to the hard work we did, missing break times on numerous occasions to get some extra practice in. It was all worth it in the end.

The boys were always well lead by Captain, Michael Booth and Vice Captain Michael Frost who always lead by example on the field. Bevan Coveley batted well all season and won the best Batsman award. Rory Plunkett was the best Allrounder with Michael Frost getting the best

It was indeed a fantastic term and a very good season for the boys. We managed to play 7 games, winning 4 and losing 3. The 3 matches that we lost were at the beginning of the term before the team had found their feet. After a lot of practice the team gained in confidence and played good cricket resulting in the remaining games all being won.

Cricket (CONTINUED) GRADE 4B accompanied by a team that has no drive, no passion and no desire whatsoever to do well. But this could not be further from the truth for these guys. They were hugely passionate and they tried their absolute hardest, putting their bodies on the line. They worked hard for each other. But their motivation was not necessarily to win – it was to do their very best for their team mates. The phrase “winning at all costs” was not part of their make-up. Maybe this was why they were so good at encouraging each other. It is not often that a coach can report that a team has managed to go the entire season without ever whinging. I never heard a single child bleating about another child.

This season will be remembered by me as being the one where I really, really enjoyed myself. The children also seemed to enjoy themselves and we looked forward to each practice session or match. They had a delightfully enthusiastic and positive attitude.

CROSS COUNTRY

Two things really stuck out about this year's group. Firstly, they made phenomenal progress over the course of the year. I remember watching a particular child running along next to the ball, waiting for it to come to a stop before picking it up and throwing it (like a girl!!) in the general direction of the keeper. By the end of the season, that same boy was diving fearlessly through the air to stop a ball from going over the boundary!! Or what about the lad whose bowling action involved a series of cartwheeling swirls whilst he appeared to be trying to look backwards through his own legs. And then that same boy was bowling effective and valuable maiden overs by the end of the season. Or what about the lad who seemed to think that the function of a cricket bat was to protect his fragile frame from ferocious balls hurled at him by some villain? And then that same lad, by the end of the season, was smashing much faster balls to the boundary at will. By the end of the season all members of the team were able to bowl effectively and all of them had had a turn to score valuable runs. Progress was huge and very noticeable.

They were a very well balanced team. Some were best at batting, others at bowling, others at getting their bodies behind the ball, others at catching and others at causing run-outs with direct hits. Each member of the team was valuable, each was highly valued and, together, they did what they were meant to do – they had huge amounts of fun and they provided the spectators with enormous amounts of entertainment. Thank you, guys, and a big thank-you to the parents who were so supportive. Richard Whitaker Coach

Secondly, I can honestly say that winning was not important to them. Such a statement is usually

2011 Soccer 1ST & 2ND TEAM The 1st team had a very successful soccer season. The boys played with a real sense of purpose and excitement. Their encouraging performances both in the league and cup games was a clear sign that the standard of soccer was steadily improving at St Johns. The 2011 season was all the more impressive considering the severity of the fixture list. The team played eight matches, won seven and lost one to Manyame School who fielded some overage boys.

House 1-0 (arguably our strongest opposition). Austin Rwodzi, who finished as the tournament's top goal scorer was also adjudged as the best player of the festival. Other players who featured prominently in the festival were Mufaro Chareka, Aubrey Silo, Anesu Mangudya, Tako Nyabadza, Kieran Robinson and Munashe Kambarami. The U13B team also had a good season. They won all their matches.

The team was always well led by Graham Curtis and Alistair Frost. All the boys were outstanding this season. They played hard hockey and always showed great team and fighting spirit. This year's hockey tour was a huge success. We trained through the holidays and the hard work paid off. We played all our matches on Astro turf. Our first match was against Gauteng Districts. The boys started with a bang! We played exceptionally well going up 3 goals. We played fast, attacking hockey. Unfortunately we conceded three goals due to the lack of experience. The game ended up as a draw, 3-3. We were disappointed that we didn't manage to win the match but at the same time we were really happy that we didn't lose our first game. The man of the match was Miles Garnett for an outstanding game.

Following boys were selected for the Harare Province: Harare A G. Curtis A. Frost K. Robinson

After our draw in the first game we had practice in the morning before our game against Crawford Prep in the afternoon. We worked on the weak points from the game before. This paid off. We played extremely well going 3-0 up again but this time we only conceded 1 goal. We won the game 3-1. The man of the match was Tadiwa Motsi. His bright yellow boots never stopped running.

MANAGER'S REPORT Mr Chauhan has already described the tour as being “one of the most successful tours ever” but I would like to detail some of the reasons as to why it was such a brilliant tour.

Having come off a heavy defeat, Mr. Whitaker and I knew that it would be hard to motivate the boys. We had an early morning practice and worked hard on a lot of aspects of our game. Our match that day was against St. John's Johannesburg. For me this was the most important match especially after our loss. We started the match extremely well. We dominated the whole match from start to finish. We played like never before. Our movement on and off the ball was fantastic. We won the match 2-0. The man of the match was Alistair Frost. He played extremely well.

Firstly, the parents, and in particular Mrs Emma Frost, did an outstanding job organizing the tour. Everything went like clockwork. The flights, transport, accommodation and itinerary were perfect and one would struggle to find fault with any aspect of the tour from an organizational point of view. Thank you, Emma. Secondly, the boys were a great group to go touring with – in fact, they were exactly the kind of boys that I would want on a tour. They were extremely active, lively, enthusiastic, energetic, passionate and they were perpetually “hungry” to get the absolute most out of every experience.

Our final two games were on the same day. We were playing an early morning game against St. Peter's and a night game against St. David's. The match against St. Peters started off very well. We went up 3-0 with Alistair Frost scoring a hat trick. Although we dominated most of the match the last ten minutes the boys let their guard down. We conceded 3 quick goals. We ended up drawing the game 3-3. Man of the match was James Krishock for making a series of outstanding saves in goals.

Thirdly, they played outstanding hockey! There was a slight doubt as to the quality of this year's team before the tour departed, but I very much doubt if their performances on the field will be matched for a long time to come. The speed with which they progressed was incredible to watch. Mr Chauhan was amazing in the way he identified weaknesses and designed drills that would overcome them. It brought us enormous pride watching our lads playing against much older and bigger boys with such determination and courage. They earned the respect of their opponents at every match.

The match against St. David's was an extremely tough match. We scored early in the match and then defended for most of the match after that. The defenders had an amazing game. They held strong not conceding a goal after a lot of pressure. We won the match 1-0. All the defenders were men of the match for their performance. The defenders were James Booth, Keiran Robinson, Oscar Van Oudtshoorn, Cameron Butler, Aiden Blignaut and James Krishock in goals.

Fourthly, the tour was an unbelievably “full” tour off the turf! This helped towards making it such a valuable experience for the lucky thirteen tourists. We managed to fit in three sessions of Adventure Golf, the Bird Show at Monte Casino, ten-pin bowling, a tour of Pretoria Zoo (in hired golf carts!!), and - the highlight of the tour - a trip to Gold Reef City. It brought me great pleasure watching their bright, lively eyes delighting in each experience. We also appeared to do a lot of dining out!!

This was one of the most successful hockey tours ever. The boys were great ambassadors on and off the field. They played the games as a team and never let their heads drop.

Domi

stor a n u P s A special thanks has to go to Andy Curtis, Emma Frost and

all the parents for their support for me and the boys. They all appreciate it. Also to all of you, especially Emma Frost, for all the hard work that went into organizing the tour. Without all of you all this would never had happened.

Before heading off on tour we discussed three non-hockey targets; A. To actively look for “Noddy points” in terms of manners, B. To be like “borders” and not “dayscholars” in nature – “married” as opposed to being in a “casual relationship”, and C. To “NOT CROSS THE LINE” once a line was drawn.

To Mr. Whitaker, thank you for the hard work and input towards the team. Once again, it was an honour to work with you. I could not have asked for a better manager. To the boys, thank you for an amazing season! It was a lot of fun. Keep playing hard hockey and never give up. Good luck in the future.

It was hilarious to watch the lads aiming for the first target. We quickly established a reputation for having good manners and our boys are to be congratulated for being such excellent ambassadors for our school. Secondly, I was amazed at how united the team were. The fact of the

Hockey (CONTINUED) matter is that there were many “differences” in the team and yet they never allowed their differences to interfere with team spirit. experience for all concerned and it will take a special place in all our memory banks. It was phenomenal “value-formoney”. My thanks go to the parents for their brilliant support, Mr Chauhan for being the perfect touring partner (what a team!!) and, most importantly, the young men who made this tour such an outstanding success!

The tour could have been described as being rather “extravagant”. However, the changes that took place in each tourist - the growth in character, the maturation – made it cheap by comparison. It was an amazing

Hockey (CONTINUED) HOCKEY 2ND XI REPORT – 2011 I really, really enjoyed this season!! There was a delightful atmosphere in the team stimulated and maintained by a number of real characters. They had an amazing ability to generate a “laid-back”, casual atmosphere with huge doses of humour and yet they did so without ever lowering their hockey standards. It was a case of laugh, joke around and have fun but also play your absolute hardest at all times. Not many teams could have pulled off this balance but this year's squad managed to achieve it with remarkable success.

We also did our job in terms of providing the Firsts with strong sparring partners and we certainly kept them on their toes. If I were to sum up this season with one word it would be “pleasant” – in fact, can I make that two words – “very pleasant.” The lads brought me a great deal of pleasure and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We also managed to remain unbeaten all season. One would assume that this would be an important achievement but it wasn't – it was the least of our achievements. Winning, for this team, was not as important as having fun and playing with total commitment and passion. No wonder they did so well!!

Our defence was absolutely rock solid. They complimented each other. What they lacked in speed, they made up for in anticipation. They might have resembled a troop of Neanderthals at times but they were certainly effective!!

My thanks go to the lads for making me so proud and my thanks also go to the parents for their support. I will be trying to duplicate this year's atmosphere in future seasons. What a great bunch of special people!!

The mid-field players were tireless and they achieved an excellent work rate. They hassled and frustrated our opponents and they managed to generate a lot of pressure which thwarted opposition attacks.

R. Whitaker

The forwards were brilliant at creating scoring opportunities!! They didn't always convert these opportunities, but at least the chances were there.

St John’s Preparatory School 2011

2011 Rugby RUGBY 1ST XV What a great squad of boys these young rugby players proved to be. They embarked on what turned out to be one of our toughest seasons of rugby at this level for years. Our first action was a warm up game against St John's College U14B team which, to our dismay, fielded several of our stars from last year. I was so proud of the boys for digging deep and winning 24-19 against much stronger boys. This helped set the platform and as usual, the season started with the challenging Coaches' Festival where experimentation is encouraged. Hosted by Gateway, they made the brave and crafty move putting us against them in the first match of the festival, trying to catch us off guard as they had just returned from a successful tour of schools in South Africa. We had a cracker of a game but it backfired for them as we managed to pull it off 5 – 0 in a tough encounter. The only other tough game was fully expected and ended in a 0 – 0 draw against Ruzawi – once again setting the stage for an epic season against one another! Our first full game against Ruzawi was also a draw 5 – 5.

Kloppers and Aiden Blignaut along with the great work done by Oscar Van Oudtshoorn and the other loose forwards Chase Onorati and Desmond Annandale, won us very valuable ball. James Krischock lived up to his promise in the hooking position and on occasions played more like an extra loose forward! We had two fine scrum halves this year in Damien White and Graham Curtis but I have to say that for me, Graham is the best centre in the country and his presence “in the middle” was a huge asset to us, not only in attack but he was desperately needed in defence. Alistair Frost was a great fly half who balanced tactical kicking with running the ball and often got our talented centres and wings away. I have to say that persistent, unspotted fringing by the opposition often thwarted our backs who, with room to move, showed flair and speed. Well done to Martin Eeson, Taku Nyabadza, Miles Garnett, Austin Rwodzi and our young fullback Mufaro Chareka who is showing great promise in the game.

Many a tense game was experienced throughout the season and the boys learnt to win and lose graciously. The Springvale Festival saw us lose 7 – 0 to a large Barwick team despite camping in the 7 point zone at the end until the bell rang without us being able to get the ball down! The Super 8 was a highlight of the season where we made it to the finals and once again beat Gateway 5 – 0 in a great game of rugby. Congratulations go to Oscar van Oudtshoorn for being voted the Best Forward and Austin Rwodzi as Most Valuable Player. Sadly we lost Austin and our scrum half, Damien White for the huge Gateway game which we lost 5 – 15. Gateway really played well and although our boys played their hearts out we were not good enough on the day.

Thank you to these fine players and our keen reserves, Tadiwa Motsi, Nick Macray and James Booth for all helping to make this a most rewarding season of rugby.

The Hellenic Day/Night Festival was as long, grueling and freezing as ever and due to a slip-up against Springvale in a pool match (they played very clever rugby, kicking over our heads). We found ourselves competing for the Plate. We won the Plate final against a strong Lilfordia team.

The team was a pleasure to coach as it comprised boys with great determination and self motivation. The team consisted of boys who played 4th team, Colts A and Colts B last year. The team was well led by Ezra Van Rooyen and Douglas Dorward.

This was a difficult term in that we only got one match – played against Greystone Park and in which we, unfortunately, lost. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the game though which was ably captained by Larry Mavimah. I wish the best to all the boys in their rugby career.

We played hard games against first teams of some Government Schools. Despite the odds the boys played well. We played a total of 10 games winning 8 and losing 2.

RUGBY COLTS B

Another great season of Colts Rugby. The season kicked off with the Gateway Coaches Festival at which we had a bad start but I am pleased to say the teams performance improved throughout the season.

The colts B once again had a fine season and kept up the tradition of either being unbeaten or losing only one match. This bunch of boys led by Ben Fowler and Jordan Cowley played good structured rugby with determination and several of the boys enjoyed the odd game for the Colts A.

In the Springvale Festival we did extremely well winning all our games in our pool with huge margins. The “battle of all battles” was the Hellenic Day/Night festival in which we came second in our pool and played Hartmann House for the bowl. It was a cracker of a game in which we won 10 – 5.

We kicked off the season with a convincing victory against Heritage at the Gateway Endeavour Festival. We managed to beat Hellenic, Eaglesvale and Alex Park easily but the final encounter at the festival against Hartmann House was a fitting end to the contest. They looked a better team than us, with their backline players breaking away at an enormous amount of pace, thanks to our Centre Kirk Edwards and wing Dumi Sikala for some try saving tackles. The nil all draw was deserved.

The team was well captained by Cole Onorati. Many thanks to Mums and Dads for supporting us throughout the season. Statistics Played Won Lost

League Games 12 8 4

Our boys lost only one match, narrowly losing to Gateway by two points, but this year we managed to complete a double over Ruzawi beating them both at home and away. In the end a fine season was had by all and I really enjoyed coaching this talented and dedicated group of boys.

RUGBY - GRADE 3A

The team enjoyed an unbeaten season. The boys played some very exciting running rugby. The pack rucked and mauled well and always made the ball available to the line. Callum English-Brown was exciting at scrum half. All the boys are commended for their good sportsmanship on and off the field. Thank you to all the parents for their support.

I really appreciated taking the Grade 3A team this season. The boys were passionate about their game and they enjoyed playing as a team. They really were a fantastic group and I look forward to watching their progress through the grades. The success of the side was built on the team's ability to perform well in the set pieces ; 20/20, Jack Bauer and firecracker confused the opposition and left them tackling the player without the ball. Our backs showed flair and speed and managed to score some excellent tries.

RUGBY COLTS D

We took part in two festivals in which we did extremely well. Of the 5 games played at the Ruzawi festival, we won 3 and drew against Barwick and lost just by on try to Ruzawi in the final, which was a very tough match.

This was a very successful term for the boys. Well captained by Ryan Sylvester and Vice Captain Tynan Swanepoel, the team played 5 matches – all of which they won. The boys were well disciplined, well behaved and managed to adapt well to changes in position. I hope that they can strengthen their existing skills, learn new ones and take a wealth of talent forward with them into next year. Good luck guys.

Many thanks to Mr Kawodza and a few other dads for all their input in coaching the boys who do not get to play any interschool matches. Well done to Ryan Dean and Richard Hounsell for captaining the side and to the rest of the players for their contribution. A big thank you to all the parents for their continued support.

enjoyed our chess season this year but are a bit skeptical of what next year holds for the club. Regrettably, all except for two of our “A” team chess players are grade sevens and will be gone next year. As a result we will remain with two present Grade six chess players and we will have to try building a team from our present Grade 4 and 5 players. Therefore, we will only be able to compete in either the “B” or the “C” league.

This year we competed in the “A” league. Our team was made up mostly of boys who competed in the “B” league, last year, with the exception of one, who is currently at the senior school. In seven out of eight matches we managed to present a team of eleven players (ten regular team members plus a reserve). Unfortunately in one of the matches we were only able to field nine of them as two of our usual players were absent. Overall, we played eight (8) matches of which we lost two (2) and won six (6). Over 35 boys put all their energy into this performance but special mention must be made of Reece Williams (Narrator), Kudzo Chiwara (David) and Anesuishe Nyawayi (Goliath). The Combined Choir concert filled the third term. The boys had many rehearsals to attend as well as matches, homework and entrance exams. The concert was the best ever. First term saw the National Institute of Allied Arts Vocal & Instrumental Festival. St John's Prep entered a Junior Boys Choir and we were delighted with a First Place.

A very full, happy and productive musical year and a special thanks to our wonderful boys, parents and staff who made this possible.

The Library 2011 The library is always busy as the number of boys taking an interest in reading grows and grows. Great experiences as a school librarian are when boys who have never been readers start becoming regular borrowers and others come to the desk to request certain books. In the second term a Grade 5 boy read his first classic version of Robin Hood and told me how absorbing it was and that he did not think he could read something of that calibre. It was heartwarming! I have a group of boys who have formed their own Book Club and make up stories either by hand or on their computers and I keep them on the shelves.

As the library still continues to be a work in progress with new books being added onto our shelves, old books revamped and new ideas being formulated I would like to once again thank all the parents who have supported the library this year with book donations as well as the hours put in with assistance. In particular I would like to thank Cally Higgins, ChipoTaruwona, Dusty Smith, Tracey Annandale, Geraldine De Beer and Sharyn Davis. Thanks so much to the library monitors for their help over the year and those more junior boys who are always willing to assist in one way or another.

Our new books on the shelves now number around 3000 and we still have some money to spend. The incredible thing is that there are always wonderful new books available and as I am in this job longer and longer I am amazed at the variety of books that boys will read and how important is it for us to make sure they have access to these books.

Over the very busy year of 2011 I have tried to use the library to highlight local and worldwide events of importance and interest and involved the boys in one way or another. Some of these events that we marked were World Book day, World Oceans Day, Rhino Awareness, Kidzcan Cancer day and of course World Cup soccer Season!

Knights and Dragons There once was a knight. The best knight that you ever knew. He lived in a castle and his name was Sir Maxwell. He was the first one to fight a dragon. They say that when he was 7 he ripped a dragon's head off and he only had one little knife. But now he is big and he has one more dragon that he just can't kill. The dragon's name was Two Headed Star Struck. He blew steaming hot lava and it was the biggest dragon. It had more than 18 eyes and it had more than 45 spikes. One day Maxwell found out that the princess was missing. The king was begging for her to come home. The castle was gold and silver. The horse was white and that was the horse that Maxwel rode. So he got on to the horse and went off to a cave with a lot of bats. He got into the cave and he saw the dragon with the princess hanging on a rope. The knight found out that the dragon could talk. It said “If you want the princess you need to give me the crystal ball you have then I will give her to you”. The knight slowly took out his big big knife and set his knife on fire with his shield. He threw it straight to its heart and it died. The knight cut the rope and got her down. They got on the white horse and rode back to the castle. The king was so happy that he let the knight marry the princess and she said yes and they lived happily ever after. Simbarashe Chopera 2E

Our Soccer Match I went to school on Thursday and I played outside with Connor, Brian, Euan and Allan. We played Iron Man. Then Miss Parker blew the whistle and we came in and sat on the carpet. Then she checked hats to see if we had names. We lined up and sat where we sit after break. Mrs Wallace talked to us and said remember manners. Then 2N lined up and got into the bus. Then 2E lined up and got into the bus and last but not least 2S went. Mr T told us to put on our seat belts and we drove to St Michaels. Then we got out of the bus and lined up again and they sang a song called This Little Light of Mine. We sat under a tent. Mr T called names. One half of 2N played soccer and they drew 0 – 0. Then the other half played and they won 1 – 0. We played and we lost 2 – 0. The game ended and we had a snack. I went to say bye to Miss Parker and we went home. Toby French 2E

The Silly Mouse In my house there is a silly mouse. He loves cheese but there is just one problem – he can't see the cheese. He gave up trying to find the cheese. He had a huge fright when he heard something at the back door. It went meow and he heard it again – meow – and the door opened and slowly creeping into the room appeared a cat. The silly mouse ran out of the house at first. He came back in when the cat started sleeping. When he was in the room where the cat was sleeping the silly mouse got to his house. He got in bed. The next day the silly mouse thought the cat was a dinosaur with his big sharp teeth. He also has sharp claws. His claws make holes in the carpet. What a silly mouse. A Bad Invention

I made some food for my mum because she was sad. I made it on a Sunday so I set the table at the backyard and my brother and I put the eggs on one side and bacon at the other side. We made tea for her. We put some grapes and cherries round her plate and Thando and I were getting on with the toast. When it was finished we put a cloth round the table. So mum came to the backyard and she enjoyed her cerevita but we had more food but Mum didn't know and she went back upstairs.

The invention was a car that had no engine and a dog pushed the car. It was supported by a dog who had to work. It was a bad idea because the dog could get tired and get hungry. The dog could run away. The lady could not control the speed limit and the lady could not put many people on and the lady could not get off and on.

My mum was so pleased when she had her cerevita so my brother and I put the rest of her food on a tray and brang it upstairs to my mum and she said she loved her food and got happy again. Thandeka Mpofu 3E

I would improve the invention by putting an engine in and making a folding ramp and making a roof and making the wheels smaller. I would put stronger brakes on the car and then I would put a tow-hitch on and then I would put a radio in and put a seat belt in. Jake Humphries 3E

THE VERY BEST DAY

Making Breakfast for Mum and Dad

My very best day. I went to a place called Donnybrooke. I went there with my whole family.

It was a Saturday morning. I woke up and it was my mum's birthday. I wanted to do something special for mum. I went to get my maid so she could help me cook so we boiled the eggs. I made waffles with whipped cream and bacon. We then cooked the bacon and put waffles inside the waffle maker. We waited for the waffles to cook. The waffles had finished. We took the waffles out. They were hot so we put on oven gloves. We took out the bacon. We finished the eggs. We then made coffee and baked beans. I boiled water inside the kettle for two minutes. When the water was warm we made tea.

We were watching races. I saw Reagan and Tristen in 3S. When the races were finished we went to the new Pizza Inn. It was fun because I played X-box. When we came out of the play room my mom bought a pizza. I played for a long time so we went home. That night I was very happy when I was home. Mudiwa Chigumba 3E

We then found two trays and very carefully we carried the food to my mum's room. Mum was sleeping so we left the food. When she woke she liked the food. When she had finished she wanted to know who made the food and then she saw me washing dishes. I told mum I made the food with the maid and I got a hug and kiss. Kieran Chifokoyo 3E

and took the milk and butter. And I took the kettle and put it on the table with the milk and the butter. I took the marmalade and the Bovril. Then I took the coco pops and put it on the table. Then I went to my bedroom and I changed into my best clothes and went to wake up my Mum and Dad. And I showed them to the table. And they were so happy because they thought they had to make food. Then my Mum and Dad gave me a big hug and kiss to say thank you. Johannes Olivier 3E

I burnt the first lot of bacon so I had to smoke some more. My eggs were done. Now all I needed to do was find a place to serve the breakfast. It was seven o'clock when my mum woke up. I found myself in the land of dragons and volcanoes. I just was standing, then along came a dragon and I was in the air and then we went to volcanoes. It exploded and it went right up into the air and it hit the dragon. Then I was falling and I hit the ground and it was not sore. I was ok but the dragon was not ok. There was a lot of lava, then I knew the dragon was just sleeping and I tried to wake up the dragon. He woke up and we got away from the lava. I wanted to keep him and I did and I named him Sparkly. A ten foot taranchula came out of the shadows of the creeky corner by the roof. I think it was exposed to the liquid. He ran around the whole house being chased by it. The Mystery of the Haunted House One late Halloween afternoon all the children were getting ready to go trick or treating. They were putting on costumes of ghosts, goblins, zombies, devils and vampires but don't forget the werewolves. At six in the evening they all went out trick or treating. One old house at the end of town was said to be haunted after Mr McMillan, the crankiest, grumpiest man in town died while watching a football game in 1998. The elders say every Halloween his ghost roams around the house looking for any trespassers and when he does he possesses you until next Halloween unless you get him out by watching the football match of 1998 in his house.

Then he thought to himself this house looks creepy. Who would ever want to live here. He walked up the stairs until he got to a room that had a notice saying “Danger. DO NOT ENTER WITHOUT A SAFETY SUIT” and right there on a hook was a safety suit which was white with bright yellow gloves. So little Ty put on the suit and

The Long Journey One morning early we were prepared to go to the Vumba mountains. We packed the luggage we needed such as our camera, some books and games to play with. Snacks, drinks, our hats and caps, extra blankets and pillows for comfort and suitcases found their way to the car. I asked my dad how long the journey would take. He replied that it would take approximately three and a half hours.

Rain Rain, rain go away, We have had enough today. Sun come up and shine so bright, I want to play, and fly a kite.

We all got into the car. The nickname for the car is: The Trusty old Volvo. When my dad turned the key to start the car, it didn't turn the engine. We suspected that the Volvo had run out of petrol. We phoned our mechanic. We asked him to stop at the filling station and buy some petrol to fill up the car. The mechanic arrived after a few minutes and we were able to fill up the car. I thought our trip was going to be foiled.

The Long Journey My life started on a large sugar cane farm. As a family we joined many friends and we were transported to a noisy building. People took us from this building to a factory. This was a sweet factory.

We stopped at many toll gates. We finally got to White Horse Inn. We went to our room and we lay down. I said to my parents that it had truly been a long journey. Daniel Jackson 4N

The Hummingbird The magnificently coloured hummingbird swiftly flew south on his annual migration. After endless hours of exhausting flight over an ever-changing landscape, he elegantly glided down to feed on some sugary sweet nectar. He hovered above the sunshine – yellow daffodils which swayed gracefully in the lush field. His wings beat the air rhythmically as he drank thirstily. After his refreshing drink he set off on his journey once again.

If I was a rich chap, I'd wear a golden cap, I'd throw it in the air And everyone would clap. Then I'll hand out ropes of pearls To all the lucky girls Who love to look at me Because I'm rich, you see!

Suddenly a terrifying shadow fell over him! It was a ravenous eagle. The hummingbird dived frantically back down. He dodged and ducked and swooped and wove. But he was tiring fast. The eagle eventually struck and sunk its cold and heartless claws deep into the hummingbird's succulent flesh and ripped it ferociously apart.

If I was a rich man I'd have a silver fan I'd wave it in the air And everyone would stare.

I am a Dolphin Living in the Ocean

Nine are the carols that people are singing, Ten are the bells, ring, ring, a ringing. Daniel Aucamp Grade 5N 2010

When God made dolphins and man he put some dolphin in man so that dolphins and people would always be friends, but as we began to evolve the love between us drifted apart. God was not happy about this. He took pity on the dolphins and was very displeased with me, a fisherman, who had lost the special bond. God decided to turn me into a dolphin and the only way that I could turn back would be if I promised never to hunt dolphins, and to do good deeds. This is where our story begins.

My Christmas Number Poem à la Pie Corbett One is for Santa, dressed in red, Two is his beard and cap on his head. Three is the mistletoe above the door, Four is the snow left on the floor.

One silvery morning, I went out fishing. I had just thrown my nets out into the water when a school of dolphins playfully knocked my sailing boat. I was cross as it began to rock back and forth. Suddenly it capsized and I was thrown off and began to sink! Spluttering and gasping I struggled wildly for I didn't know how to swim. Through the sea the dolphins reappeared and carried me above the water to get a breath of air. Then they dived back and took me down below to an air bubble where I met God.

Five is for reindeer that have no fear, Six is for adults sipping their beer. Seven is for lights, as bright as a star, Eight is the donkey that travelled so far. Nine is for plum-pudding, I like it the most, Ten is for friends who make a toast. Mudiwa Chiromo Grade 5N 2010

God told me that I was going to be changed into a dolphin.

Farewell to a Friend

“You are going to know what it feels like to be a dolphin and you are to swear never to fish or hurt these lovely creatures again,” he said.

This amazing and true composition is about me, Makanaka, a boy who lost a very good friend because of a fatal accident.

God also told me that a dolphin called Bottlenose would help me go wherever I wanted and show me how to use my tail and fins. After that he left and the air bubble popped.

A few month ago I was playing with my most trustworthy friend, Milkshake. We named her that because when she wagged her tail her whole body would shake. She was a beautiful black and brown dog, only two years of age.

Bottlenose showed me how to swim forward and how to jump through the ocean's waves. I soon realised that dolphins are sociable, graceful and loving animals. I swam with my new friend side by side whirling and twirling, twisting and tumbling my streamlined body. We loved diving and ducking through the clear blue water. Then we would chase the fish that darted ahead of us and we would swim down, down, down to the bottom of the ocean and then up, up flicking our tails with all our might. We would leap into the air, shooting up into the sky, flying high and then come diving back down to the sea again.

We loved running around the house and weaving through bushes and trees, rolling in the grass and running through the sprinklers and chasing after the crows and grasshoppers. She would dart across the driveway with adrenalin pumping through her veins and back again chasing after butterflies. When I had to go to sleep, I thought of her all through the night. Then one day I woke up looking forward to playing with her. The Perfect Sunset It was a still evening in Kariba and I was in the boat with my father as the sun began to set. We had caught nothing, apart from a few sticks, and we were about to return for supper. I picked up a rod and began to reel it in. There was a soft tug on the line and then a zzzzzzz sound.

One afternoon we landed at a lovely island which had a golden beach. A little beyond the sand were several elephants, some buck darting here and there and a hippo or two peering from the surface of the lake. Further away, but near the bank, was a crocodile who was floating his knobbly back in the water.

A fish was hooked and the bright orange of the setting sun reflected off its silvery body as it surfaced. It was a most extraordinary sight against the blue-black water. I was so distracted that I accident flicked the reel on to bait runner and the fish made a break for it. This happened every time the fish came into sight and I watched the flashing streaks of its movement beneath the marvellously coloured sky.

The air was becoming fresher and the sun began going down. Everyone decided to gather on the top deck of the Sovereign to watch a beautiful African sunset. Very quickly everything went black except the sky. The animals were dark figures and the trees were twisty pitch-dark shapes. The mountains were in the far distance beyond the water and they were black as coal. Then I stared with amazement because it looked as if God had painted the sky with colours of red, yellow, orange and purple and it seemed as if he had sprinkled ripples of silver paint and diamonds on the water.

I passed the rod to my father so that I could watch the dipping sun. I wanted to see the swirling, fiery colours and the huge red ball disappearing over the edge of the world. Once the fish was on board it was suddenly much darker. We had seen the perfect sunset and it was time to start the boat and get back. Ryan Sylvester 5N

Suddenly the elephant trumpeted as the gigantic burning ball called the sun dipped down, down, down, to end the perfect sunset. Tyler Spanuolo 5N

A Christmas Poem by Numbers What I can do to make the World a Better Place

One is the bell that hangs on a card, Two are the angels that herald our Lord.

There are so many things that would make the world a better place. I can try to make a difference every day and encourage others to do the same.

Three is for the snowman, funny and fat, Four is the jolly, bright Christmas hat. Five are the reindeer eating their hay, Six is the wonderful Christmas day.

Firstly I will never throw litter about because it makes our towns and cities look horrible and dirty. It is very annoying when you see someone throwing rubbish out the car window. I am going to remind my relatives and others not to be litter-bugs.

Seven is the snow that fell from the skies, Eight is a plate of tasty mince-pies. Nine is old Santa who we kids all love, Ten are the starts which twinkle above. Mapalo Musaba 5N

Stealing is also a bad thing. I will tell the people at the tills if I have spotted someone stealing in their shops. If I was a good policeman I would put up security cameras and lights and catch robbers who steal from cars and houses. 116

GRADE 6E I don't know what I would do if my granny was not there. I love my granny Stembile. Honours Allied Arts Mudiwa Bosha 6E

Grandmother I think I am rather special. I get to see the old lady that I call Grandma every day – well at least after school, and she has a real influence on my life.

My Reflections of Grade Six

My granny has light skin and a square shaped head. She doesn't notice it but everybody else does. She has a bulging forehead and wears fancy modern clothes.

On the first day of Grade Six I felt nervous about a new teacher, but excited about the new classroom. At the beginning of my race at sports day I was scared because I thought I was going to come last. At the end of my race I was very pleased with my number. I had come second only being beaten by Hadley.

You see, unlike most grannys, my granny is very active. She may have authio arthritis in both her legs, but she doesn't need a crutch. Her name is Stembile Sadomba. She is sixty-seven years of age. She drives a black 'E – two – hundred' Mercedez Benz. My mum bought it as a birthday present for her in August 2008. My grandma, like a lot of grandmas, has a sweet tooth which means lots of sweets for me! She lives in a huge one acre yard and thirteen bedroomed house. When my mum goes to other countries I stay at my granny's house which means resetting her alarm clock from waking up at ten o'clock to waking up at six o'clock. I think my granny is one of the fastest drivers in the world. She is so fast that if she doesn't join Formula One soon, I don't know what the world would do without her. She comes to watch all my rugby, soccer, cricket and volleyball matches. My granny has been drinking beer since she was twenty five years old, but only drinks occasionally now. She does have one habit – she hums a lot. My granny hums so much that she doesn't even recognize it. She has had quite a deep voice for a long time and so do both of her sisters. My granny loves gardening and if you walk into her garden for the first time you will be truly amazed. She was married to my grandfather whose name is Ronald Sadomba. They divorced in the late 1980's. My mum, my granny and I go to church every single Sunday and have a good time. When I stay at her house sometimes she tells me she can sense a good night's rest. She also says she can almost taste the fruits of her labour. My grandma brings me a drink after school because she knows I will be thirsty.

When it was camp I was so excited because I knew it was going to be so much fun. The one thing I did not enjoy about camp was when we had to wake at six in the morning and go for a jog. The food at camp was very delicious, especially the macaroni and cheese. My two favourite obstacles at camp were canoeing and the gladiator challenge. I liked the gladiator challenge because everyone took part in it. My favourite sport in second term was soccer because we played matches all the time. During the Rugby World Cup I was supporting South Africa. They played well in the pool stages and managed to go into the quarter finals. In the quarter finals they played Australia but they weren't good enough to beat the Wallabies so they lost nine – eleven to Australia. During exams I felt nervous because I wanted to do better than last year. When the results came out I was as happy as a lark because I had achieved good results. Next year I hope I come first in class and go to prize giving and become Deputy or Head of House. Timothy Nyika 6E

The second term was flying until we started getting ready for the end of term. It was slow and hard but I got through it and then I started looking forward to the holidays.

Reflections of Grade Six Four days before I started Grade Six the nerves and excitement hit me. I was told so much by my brother who was now leaving to go to the senior school. I couldn't wait to see what happened.

Holidays finally came. I was so relieved after a hard second term. I stayed at home for the holidays but I played Stragglers cricket week. I really enjoyed it and now I was ready for the third term. I had already begun to study for the big exams.

My first day of Grade Six finally came and now I could meet my new teacher, Mrs Ellis. She was very nice on the first day when we received stacks of books which were as heavy as lead. Our new classroom was lovely because it was so well decorated. First term was a good term for me because I play lots of sport such as tennis and cricket as well as cross country. On the 4th February the 1st Team Cricket, which I play for, went down to Pretoria for a cricket festival. We played good cricket but the other teams were better. We managed to win one of our three games. After cricket I came back to school and now it was athletics. By end of term I was extremely tired and needed a good holiday!

The third term started, but I wasn't at school – I was in Pretoria playing hockey for my school. When I arrived back to school, exams were only a few weeks away. I was studying hard and I was ready for exams. Exams came and went and I felt confident I had done well and when I found out I did well I was as happy as a lark. Third term was swimming term and I did make the swimming team and did well at the Interhouse Gala. I had worked hard the whole term and I needed a HOLIDAY!!

Once the April holidays came I was incredibly happy. My family and I went to BeDe Lodge in Mozambique where we did all sorts of fun things. After a fun filled time at BeDe we went to a four star resort called Bazaruto. I had a relaxing time there.

I have loved Grade Six and all the teachers who taught me and I think moving to Grade Seven will bring lots of responsibility. I am looking forward to it and I hope it is as good as Grade Six was to me. Grade Six has been the best year ever! Cameron Butler 6E

After the Rain The dark storm clouds begin to roll in and soon the sound of rain can be heard patting the leaves softly in the wild. The animals quickly try to find shelter from the impending rain. They patiently wait for the rain to pass. After it does the grasslands come back to life. The animals come out of hiding and begin to play and graze on the luscious grass. If you listen carefully you can hear the plants growing after the long drought that has starved and killed many animals. The rain has now filled the waterhole and hundreds of animals swarm around it to replenish their thirst.

It was truly made by God and God put it there as a promise to never flood the Earth again. Douglad Dorward 6N

After the Rain After the rainy season it was spring time. Spring is a wondrous time when all the trees are budding. The birds begin to sing and the flowers start their blooming. The grass turns green and every morning there are beautiful dew drops everywhere. The clouds are white and fluffy. All the herbivores have something to eat and so do the carnivores. Food is plentiful. Spring time at home means spring cleaning which means I have to clean up the dark attic and dust the basement while mum sips her coffee. I'd rather clean out the garage but dad does that. I enjoy cleaning out the attic because I find old toys or video games. Spring is my favourite time of the year because the air is fresh and cool. The grass is green and there is a light breeze. The leaves grow back on trees after the long winter. Squirrels start to scurry about looking for food. Bears come out of hibernation.

THE VIEW FROM THE TOP It was a long, gruelling climb over jagged rocks and crossing blue mountain streams that flowed ever so gently. But it was well worth it, for the view from the top was absolutely breath-taking.

I WONDERED SLOWLY THROUGH THE EMPTY HOUSE

You could see the huge waterfall that rushed down over the sharp rocks into a large, clear, blue pool. The pool turned into a river and flowed into the distance. Along its sides were small, golden beaches that sparkled in the hot, Zimbabwean sun.

I wondered slowly through the empty house. Suddenly there was a loud crash! It had come from upstairs. I decided to go and see where the noise had come from. The stairs were screaming as if they were telling me to turn back and run. I ignored that thought. Finally, I had come to the top of the stairs. It was in a corridor which I followed along until I found a room (the only room besides the bathroom.) I went inside.

If you looked to the one side you could see a small mountain village with sheep grazing in the fields. The village itself looked quite cosy and it was full of life. There was a woman carrying big buckets of water which flashed in the sun. The men were ploughing the large, brown fields.

There were lots of dolls, and I mean LOTS of dolls. There were some on the bed, the shelves, the floor and everywhere else you could imagine a doll could be.

If you kept turning you could see the Pungwe River with gleaming, blue waters that looked so sweet after being churned up by the waterfall. And if you kept turning you saw the most amazing fields of proteas and oranges, apples, lemons and plums which looked like miniature rainbows in the sunshine.

Then there was a clown in a rocking chair – a spine-chilling clown with a big, red, insane, murderous smile. Should I dare to sleep here tonight? I had to as I was homeless.

Before I knew it we had to start the long climb back down over the jagged rocks and flowing streams. Declan Butler 6S

I tucked myself into bed and slowly closed my eyes whilst staring at the fist-clenching stillness of the clown in the rocking chair.

LIVING IN A CHANGING WORLD

I opened my eyes to the surprising sound of the television switching on. I wondered what had caused it to switch on. I turned to look at the clown. THE REMOTE WAS IN HIS HAND!!! My heart was beating the fastest it had ever done before. I would rather be dead than feel how I felt right then.

I myself live in aworld tha tis changing. It is completely rearranging. There are no more wars, No more gunning, No more innocent people running.

I ever so quietly and stiffly crept back into bed. I closed my eyes as hard as I could. Suddenly, I heard a shrieking sound – not a human sound but more like the sound of a badly damaged instrument.

Poor people are given a place to live, And with everything people share and give. Natural resources for fuel we use, And there is no more physical abuse.

I opened my eyes and crept out of bed to see what had made that terrifying noise and where it had come from. Instinctively, I looked to the clown which was as dead still as always. To my utter horror I saw that there was a flute on the clown’s lap!!!

There is a cure for every single disease, And no one forgets to say thank you or please! And the new technology is quite advanced. It is so cool it will put you in a trance.

I leant over to feel the clown’s face and, as I was about to touch it, the phone rang. I got such a fright that I leaped back. I ran to the phone wondering why someone would call this house. I picked up the phone and answered it. All I could hear was a dry, sick laughing. I turned around and the clown was gone and the chair was rocking all on its own. HELP!!! Benjamin Fircks 6S

I was way too big for my boots and needed to learn a lesson quickly so my brother, mother and father decided to teach me one. They hid behind a staircase and I confidently marched ahead. I was blissfully unaware that I was alone. My head held high and my hands in my pockets, I suddenly noticed no one was listening to my irritating chatter or answering my constant questions. Where was everybody? Well, remember at the beginning of my story where I felt “lost, scared and going to be kidnapped” feeling? Well this is where they came in! Needless to say I was extremely happy to see my family appear - even though they were doubled over with laughter. I clung to my mother's leg from fear of being lost again and my cheeky monkeyness swiftly disappeared.

A warthog came close. I lifted my spear to strike when ROOAAARRR!!!! the warthog and the other animals ran away. On the other side of the waterhole was a huge lion. His coat was a gleaming shade of gray with a mane as black as the deepest pit. Its eyes were so red, one glare would kill a man. With its big mouth it sucked gallons of water. I tried backing away silently, but 'crack' a twig snapped. The lion stopped drinking – it aimed its eyes at me. I sprinted for my dear life. I could hear the lion pounding after me. Each step sounded like a stampede of elephants. Trees were twigs to him. They were crushed under his bulk.

I'm not sure if you've watched that really bad TV series called “Lost” which I have to say after the first couple of very exciting episodes became very strange and weird, well that's where I got “Lost!” Don't worry if you haven't watched it – you certainly haven't “Lost” out! Now I understand why the makers of this series named it “Lost”.

I saw a crack in a huge rock. I slipped through. The lion swiped and scratched as if its claws were made of iron. The rock cracked and split. The lion's head was in front of me. ROOOAAARR!!! it bellowed. I sprinted towards a small cave and hid at the back. The huge lion was too big to fit in the cave. It bellowed in failure and ran off in a rampage. Exhausted I fell asleep.

Here is the last, but definitely not least, most important meaning of “lost”. Have you ever looked into a beautiful girl's eyes and been “lost” in thought. And then popped up the cheesy pick up line “Hey babe do you have a map because I've been “lost” in your eyes all day?” Reece Williams 7N

I woke to find it raining and thundering. I ate some provisions in my satchel. I went out in the rain knowing the lion would not be able to hear or smell me. I followed the lion's tracks towards a mountain cave. I proceeded into the cave. There it lay snoring and snorting. Using the net I made a rope and tied its paws and mouth.

Thank You Mum Thank you mum For picking me up when I am down, For wiping away my every frown. For treating me like a king, For giving me everything.

I whistled. It woke with surprise. I readied my spear. The binds broke and the lion came pounding at me. I sprinted at it throwing my spear. It landed in its chest but it still came for me. I took my daggers and leapt at it.

2011 Literary Contributions GRADE 7S The Amazing Discovery of Professor Brainstorm

Dave the Dare Devil Dave was just an ordinary boy who went to St John's Prep and did ordinary things like playing cricket and doing afternoon swimming. He had an ordinary family consisting of him, his parents and his little sister, Suzie. He was plain and boring in appearance, but in his mind he was the world's greatest daredevil. He would do stunts such as jumping the grand canyon on a motorbike or riding a skate board down the Eiffel Tower. He was the coolest guy around. He got all the girls falling in love with him and everyone wanted his autograph and to say his amazing catch phrase “do it to the limit”, but sadly it was all in his head and that he'd probably amount to none of that stuff but instead sit at home all day watching TV and playing his playstation games, just waiting for something to happen. He had no friends to come to his house for the day because they all thought he was a wimp.

There was once an amazing woman named Marie who always thought of children and how they all tried to do work in their head. Marie visited Doctor Steven Marks who agreed with her that a child does most work in their head. After seeking help from Dr Marks she ended up traveling to Norway where she was told about Bjoorn Schmolke who was almost a human brainstorm machine. He thought of ideas for projects, stories and poems all in his head. Bjoorn met Marie after school one day and asked her why she wanted him. Marie told Bjoorn about her discoveries and told him to keep quiet about his enormous thinking capacity. That night Marie read one of Bjoorn's stories and decided to get him into being a scientist. Marie taught him all she knew about physics which was a lot.

One day his dad came home from work with a present for him, a skateboard, and so began the legacy of Daredevil Dave. He did bigger and bigger tricks and got better and better until he was ready for the stunt of riding his skateboard down Bone Hill, so named because anyone who tried to do it would fail and wind up dead. Dave was ready! He put on his helmet and began his ride to the bottom. After a few seconds he was half way through the course and just had to take the left turn ahead. He prepared himself for the turn – he leaned over to the left – but it wasn't enough – he flew off the edge only to land in a tree. He got down and sighed. He had failed. Everyone came around him surprised he was alive, then all began to chant “Dare Devil Dave” repeatedly so he got up and raised his first in the air like he was a hero, and nobody ever called him a coward after that. Bradley Watson 7S

From there Bjoorn taught at a university and wrote four books on learning science and received the Scientist Giving Back prize which he all won under one name Professor Brainstorm. Sadly Bjoorn was wanted by the USSR so badly that he committed suicide in 1964 at age 38 but his well known science still carries on. Marie's daughter, Jenny, is still searching for the next Professor Brainstorm. Aiden Blignaut 7S
