Has it been 12 months or longer since you last cleaned your carpets or upholstery? Carpets should be cleaned regularly even if they don’t look dirty. Like you use anti bacterial sprays on your kitchen work surfaces, carpets should be cleaned for the same reason. A clean carpet helps promote a healthy atmosphere free from dirt and bacteria, and more so for people with allergies and asthma.

your life, your home, your community. I hope you’re all enjoying this warmer weather, makes a nice change doesn’t it? I can’t say I’m pleased that my car air conditioning decided to pack up in July, the only month I’ve ever needed it! Elsewhere in the borough there have been some comments about our local authority not keeping on top of the growth in public areas, some roads and other areas have become quite overgrown. Sounds like a reasonable comment, but it’s never as easy as just making a comment is it? We have local authority cuts to bear in mind, and then there’s the wildlife concerns that if we cut back grass and hedges etc at the wrong time of the year we will hamper natural habitat. We all know we need to do everything we can to keep the bees happy and flourishing! And of course we have to balance all this with safety, we can’t have cars having restricted vision due to overgrown hedges when pulling out onto roads etc. So as you can see that innocent comment about overgrown areas isn’t as straightforward as it first sounded. There’s a great opportunity here for our local authority to make cuts

in the name of wildlife and not just as a means of saving money though. Anyway the kids are now off school so lots of you will be taking off on holiday. I’m just back from Morocco, where Marrakesh reached 54 degrees on one day! Needless to say it was hot! I can’t believe the cultural difference in a plane journey of just 3 hours. It was Ramadan while we were there so it was a very interesting time to see Morocco, but not for young children or sensitive adults I have to say! I can’t not mention the arrival of the royal baby, George, I’ve just had to Google his title, as I wasn’t sure if he’d be a duke or a prince. Anyway Prince George of Cambridge it is and we’re all very pleased to welcome him into this world. One things for sure he won’t be concerned about the state of the overgrown public areas in Wrexham!

All the best, Jill

Sowing The Seed Cornflowers and poppies are just some of the seeds we have been sowing as part of our ongoing campaign to encourage people to give up a little space in their gardens and allotments to wildflowers. You may have seen us at the Overton Village Fete or the Cheshire County Show where we were handing out free packets of wildflower seed and our ‘demo-meadow’ was on display showcasing just what Wildbanks Conservation can do! The mobile meadow has a bird-feeding station built into it which was hand crafted from Elm, Beech and Ash which Mick had felled and planked himself. We have been taking our campaign to school where the children at Borderbrook Primary have been planting wildflowers to help us show them the importance of native plants and insect pollinators. To help improve the biodiversity of their grounds, they also made bird-feeders from hollowed out logs and reused old drainpipe to make insect homes with twigs and moss. The children also enjoyed pond dipping and bird box making as part of the Environmental workshops we tailor-made for the school. Projects such as these can often be funded by Lottery grants, so if you are a school or a

community group, Wildbanks Conservation can help secure funding on your behalf. We do not always charge for this service so please contact us to see if we can help you! Our work at schools elsewhere has paid off too, as a living willow dome we created with the children in the spring has now leapt into life. Alongside the woven dome, the raised beds we built are now flourishing with masses of runner beans thanks to the greenfingered nursery children and a Lottery grant we secured to fund the project. Are you a business with a small area of public space that you would like improving to impress your customers. We would love to make some links with local businesses. Please contact us to discuss your ideas.

Welsh Carvery every Sunday

by Terry Davies

Twenty years of style and luxury On a flying visit to the Lion Quays Hotel Nr. Chirk recently, wife Pam stared in surprise at a car park full of pre-war Ford cars, and called me over to take a look. It proved to be a group of 1935 Ford Model Y and C cars belonging to members of the Ford Model Y & C Register who had been taking part in a tour of North and Mid Wales, arranged by their Spares Officer, Peter Ketchel of Chester, who has organised many such events in this area over the years. We introduced ourselves to the group of members at the bar, and thus followed a lively discussion with such people as Chairman Brian Godfrey, Secretary Bob Wilkinson and magazine editor Sam Roberts, all of whom were bursting with knowledge and full of enthusiasm for their very special Fords. Sam, who had spent 32 years in the army, has also written a book entitled ‘Henry’s Cars for Europe’ which is available via their website- www.fordyandcmodelregister.co.uk or from eBay no. 160981315383. There were several C type 10 h.p. models on display, as well as the Y types, including some with special bodies, but the model that had caused a sensation when it went on sale in 1935 was the Y Popular two-door saloon, which Ford had cleverly reduced the price of by £2, to make it the first £100, four seater saloon car! Morris 12

had built their own £100 car in 1932 but that was only a two-seater, and although the Austin Ruby of the times was a four-seater, it cost £118. So, the two-door Y Popular was an instant sales success. It had a four cylinder 933c.c. side-valve engine which developed 23.4 b.h.p. and was rated at 7.96 h.p. ,with a £6 Road Tax. The top speed was 59 M.P.H. and the touring fuel consumption was 35-45 m.p.g. It had a three-speed gearbox with synchromesh on 2nd. and 3rd.; 6 volt electrics and, disappointingly, suction operated windscreen wipers, which when you accelerated in the rain, slowed them down just when you needed them most. “Mine work perfectly downhill!” joked Sam. I told him about Ray Lambert-Evans, a good friend of mine who had once owned a rather clapped out Ford Y, which was a very temperamental starter. He always carried a little bottle of petrol around with him, which, as a last resort, he poured directly into the Zenith carburettor, before a final turn of the starting handle. If that didn’t work, he sometimes flayed the tyre on the front wheel with it in anger! “Just like Basil Fawlty!” laughed Sam. So we reluctantly left this group of Ys men after such a pleasurable evening- but I hope we meet them again next year!

The Wrexham Rural Sanitary Authority owned a well at Cross Lanes at the junction of Kiln Lane and the Wrexham Road on the corner opposite the police station. After many complaints that the level of water was often too low to extract sufficient water the decision was taken to deepen the well. The contract was awarded to Moses Young and Roger Johnson, both of Bangor and partners in the sinking of wells in the Maelor for 20 years as well as in other enterprises such as fishing. By August 1885 after three weeks of digging they had reached a depth of about 36ft working through a bed of clay and had dug 9ft into sand when they decided to give up for the day and covered the hole with planks. The next day, it being Moses Young’s turn to go down the well, he put his foot in the loop of rope and hung on with both hands, his preferred method of descent, and Johnson lowered him down. When he reached about 9ft from the bottom he came to a later of carbonic acid gas (carbon dioxide) and he called to Johnson to wind

him back up. Johnson had raised him about four feet when Young fell off the rope to the bottom of the well. Johnson called for assistance and was lowered into the well but found the gas was too bad before he could reach his partner and had to return to the surface. The body was eventually recovered with grappling irons after two hours. Two days later an inquest was held by the coroner, Mr B H Thelwell, at the Kiln Inn with a jury under foreman, Capt Marsh., the Rector of Bangor’s son. The coroner queried the method used to descend the well but was told that they both preferred to use the rope rather than being lowered in a bucket. There was some doubt as to the cause of death - whether the deceased had died from inhalation of gas or from a fit making him fall and causing the injuries from which he died. The coroner advised that the jury could ask for a post mortem if they thought medical evidence would throw additional light on the cause of death. The jury eventually returned a verdict of ‘Accidental death’.

The book - The history of Bangor Is-y-Coed - is now with the publisher, Bridge Books of Wrexham, and should be available about October. The cost has still to be worked out as it depends on a number of factors: the number of illustrations, whether in colour or black and white, hard or soft bacl, a stitched or glued spine, with a dust cover etc, etc. Watch this space! 14

A LESS TAXING LIFE IN THE SUN

According to latest figures, an estimated 350,000 people left the UK in 2011 in search of a fresh start abroad. The most popular European destinations include Spain, France and Germany (source: Home Office, Emigration from the UK Research Report 68, November 2012) For most people, tax havens evoke images of luxury yachts and champagne. But you do not have to be a formula one racing champion to benefit from tax mitigation nor do you have to move to exclusive locations such as Monaco or the British Virgin Islands. With some careful planning there could be significant savings to be made on income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax in countries that do not appear to be exotic offshore tax havens. Popular European destinations have their tax advantages too. Unfortunately tax is a bug bear most of us have to face - wherever we live - and it is paramount that if you are considering living overseas you should seek specialist tax advice otherwise it could end up costing you much more than you bargained for. The general rule of thumb is that you will pay UK income tax and capital gains tax as long as you are a UK resident. Although still to receive Royal Assent and thus subject to amendment, a new Statutory Residence Test (SRT) came into force from the start of the 2013/14 tax year which introduced a

number of key tests to assess an individual’s residence. It is no longer just the number of days spent in the UK that is considered when determining residency although it is still an important factor. If you meet any one of the criteria within the automatic residence test you will be deemed a UK resident. There are a number of criteria including spending 183 days or more in the UK per tax year or having a home in the UK for more than 90 days and living in that home on at least 30 days during that tax year. In addition there are automatic overseas tests and sufficient ties tests. The ties that are considered for these purposes are family, accommodation, work, the country in which you were present at midnight for the greatest number of days in a tax year and a 90 day tie which exists if you have spent more than 90 days in the UK in either or both of the previous 2 tax years. You may be eligible for the tax year to be split into 2 parts when coming to, or departing from, the UK. The chances are that wherever you lay your hat you will have to pay some tax. But just as in the UK specialists help millions of people pay less tax than they might otherwise, so too can experts who understand overseas tax and residency rules. The overriding message is simple: get expert advice. It could save you money.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. Penley Community Village Hall The Village Hall and its extensive car park were gifted to the Trustees of the Village Hall in 1930 to be a permanent meeting place and social centre for the villagers of Penley. Now 80 years on parts of the hall are showing their age and we need to replace a large section of the roof, repair interior damage to the ceiling, upgrade the kitchen and decorate our second social room. The main hall with its versatile stage has already been redecorated and new double glazed windows installed throughout the building. We are trying to get grant aid from several sources for this, as well as our own fund raising and social events. This year we have had a most successful Ceilidh last April, a Tea and cakes afternoon in May, a wine tasting evening courtesy of Peiroth wines and a car boot sale in June. In September we plan to start a weekly Bowling club as well as Whist drives that meet every Thursday (contact Mrs S Williams 01978 710275) and the Riding for the disabled and the Masons which meet monthly. We are to repeat the dance evening on Saturday 14th September at 7pm; this will include hot food and a bar as well as excellent live music from the Townsend family players. The Village Hall belongs to the people of Penley. We hope that any or all of this varied programme appeals to you, and that you and your family will come and support our efforts to RAISE THE ROOF!

Wrexham’s Libraries are Buzzing! Gwersyllt Library has been transformed into a wildlife friendly zone. With the help of funding and contributions from external organisations the green-fingered 1st Gwersyllt Scout Group,Wrexham libraries staff and North Wales Libraries Partnership (NWLP) staff, created a wildflower bed and caterpillar café to provide nectar, food and shelter for pollinators and other wildlife all year round. Pollinators provide an estimated £430 million per year to the UK economy. To help conserve the declining numbers of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects and their habitats, Gwersyllt library is 1 of 8 north Wales libraries transforming their grounds into wildlife friendly zones. Claudia Howard, Partnership Support Officer for the NWLP said, “The project may seem unusual for libraries to undertake. However, creating habitat for pollinators is but one of many aims. Libraries must attract audiences, work with communities, work collaboratively and meet sustainability and environmental objectives. Working with schools, scouts, beavers, and the Youth and Justice Service, allow us to not only to raise awareness of bees and butterflies, but also libraries.” One of the first libraries to complete the project was at Gwersyllt where Claudia said: “Overall the project has been well received and people were keen to work with the NWLP. The 1st Gwersyllt Scouts were great

fun to work with. They were inquisitive, bright youngsters who were evidently eager to join in. It was a pleasure to meet them all. Thank you to scout leaders Claire Fanson, Olwen Ruscoe and David Morris and the parents for allowing them to participate.” Claire Fanson said, “It’s great to see the scouts involved in a project directly in their community. The Scouts meet in Gwersyllt and they can watch the meadows develop.” David Morris added, “The Scouts have learned about gardening, why materials are used, how to care for the environment and the project has also helped them to develop working as a team.” In addition to gardening tasks, the children perused the butterfly and moth exhibition on loan from Bangor University Brambell Museum and Snowdonia National Park and handled the reptiles, amphibians and unusual pets from Reptile Kids. Sandra Gardner, Manager at the Gwersyllt Community Resource Centre where the project was carried out said: “This was a fantastic day of fun activities and it was great to see the Scouts taking part in improving our local environment. The grounds of the centre have been improved by their efforts. We’re so grateful to Claudia Howard for organising the planting for pollinators”. The libraries which are participating in the project are Gwersyllt, Rhos, Chirk, Brynteg, Dolgellau, Bethesda, Penrhyn Bay and Penmaenmawr.

Here are a few pointers to get you started in the garden this month. Flower garden - Ensure containerised plants especially evergreens never go short of water during the summer while they’re developing their flower buds for next spring’s display. A shortage of water now can lead to a case of bud drop next year for plants, such as camellias and rhododendrons. Pots that have dried out should be submerged in water and left to soak for a few hours, ideally in a bowl, bath or water-butt. Even if it rains, pots often remain dry as they stand in the rain shadow of a house and their foliage acts as an umbrella. Support the stems of tall perennials and lilies with bamboo canes and watch out for lily beetles and their larvae. Pick any off and destroy them immediately. Deadhead roses as the blooms fade, cutting off the flowers just above the uppermost leaf on the stem. Trim back lavender bushes after flowering to remove the old blooms and shoot tips. Take care not to cut back too heavily into any old wood. Removing faded flowers from perennials and annual plants will also ensure a continued display of blooms. 26

Holiday watering - There are several things you can do to help prevent plants drying out. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid. You can also install an automatic trickle watering system on an outside tap, which is controlled by a timer and will turn water on and off each day. Continue taking summer cuttings of fuchsias, pelargoniums and tender perennials. These root quickly at this time of year, forming sturdy young plants that will successfully overwinter on a bedroom windowsill. Many houseplants, including coleus and African violets, can also be propagated from cuttings now. Trim hedges, especially hedging conifers that can become tall and annoy neighbours. Pests - Watch out for ants nesting in patio pots, where they can disturb root growth and reduce a plant’s performance. Standing pots in a large saucer of water helps deter them from settling in. Vine weevil is a particular problem in greenhouses and patio pots. Now is a good time to treat compost with biological pest control nematodes, which search out and kill weevil larvae. They can also be applied to the soil around attacked plants.

MYSTERY SHOPPING

AT EGO XCENTRIC HAIR DESIGN

It was fun to be asked to go and be a Mystery Shopper at a Hairdressing Salon in an old Police Station. It was definitely a change from going round Supermarkets, which is my usual job On entering the Ego Xcentric Salon in the pretty little village of Overton, I was immediately welcomed by Molly, who seated me on a leather couch for a few moments, while she arranged the chair for me. The salon is very light and airy, with attractive gold mirrors and very modern leather chairs The latest trends in hairstyling are offered together with the opportunity to buy very upmarket products at a reasonable price. You can still see the old cell where the prisoners were kept, though now it can be used for beauty treatments. After donning the protective gown, I met Vanessa, a lively stylist who really listened to what kind of style I would like, it was nice to meet a hairdresser who actually listen and gave feed back. She came up with several suggestions that would suit my fine hair, we discussed the best treatment and she analysed my skin tone to see if I was warm or cool toned. We picked some shades which would go with my colouring. The highlighting was carried out carefully and while I waited for the colour to take, I was offered a delicious Latte coffee and a biscuit. I was really pleasantly surprised when I had my hair washed, and lay on the wonderful massaging shiatsu chairs and a hot towel

scalp massage was carried out while my hair was conditioned. I felt my whole body relax, it was like a spa treatment at the same time! My hair was cut expertly and I was delighted by the colour and shape of my hair. I felt very pleased with my experience plus looking much younger and very elegant. I will be visiting again. Robin founded this salon over 7 years ago and has built up a high reputation for hair styling in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. He also has 2 Male Barber Shops in Chester and Wrexham. I would certainly give Ego X very high marks for a wonderfully relaxing hair experience. Why not try it for yourself. Ring 01978 710100

Vehicle Crime

• Never leave credit cards or cheque books in the glove compartment and don’t leave the Whilst out and about in the Marchwiel & vehicle documents in the car. Overton areas I have come across quite a few • Mark items such as CD players and sat vehicles with the windows left open. During this nav systems with your postcode or vehicle exceptionally warm weather, we can all appreciate registration using a special security marker. that it gets very, very hot in our vehicles, but at the same time this gives great cause for concern and will increase the temptation for thieves to enter vehicles, take your vehicle or anything of value that may be left lying around. We are currently running an initiative called VCRAT ( THIS IS A FORCEWIDE COMMUNITY SAFETY INITIATIVE. VCRAT STANDS FOR VEHICLE CRIME REDUCTION AND TARGETTING.) Car owners need to ensure they lock their cars and don’t leave items on display which may tempt a passer by. “We are also urging the public to be extra vigilant and if they see anything suspicious or someone hanging round vehicles please get in touch with us on 101.

Security tips:

ALL DETAILS RECEIVED WILL BE CHECKED ON PNC AND A LETTER WILL BE SENT TO THE REGISTERED KEEPER WHICH INCLUDES CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION. Lastly, I have recently been informed of the speed of some tractors along Mulsford Lane in Worthenbury. As you may or may not be aware there is a childrens play park near the end of the lane and this is giving residents cause for concern. Whilst we all appreciate that farmers need to get their grass cut and stored whilst the weather is favourable, we still need to give a thought for the dangers a speeding tractor can cause. I would like to ask all farmers / farm hands / contractors etc. to be wary of these issues and appreciate the dangers this entails. Thank you, in anticipation, for your assistance in this matter.

• Never leave anything on display in your vehicle; Regards, Lynne a bag on the back seat is enough to tempt a thief. • Remove all belongings including bags; lock them in your boot. • Always remove your portable sat nav system including any support cradles and suction pads that are fitted to the windscreen. If you can’t take it with you lock it safely in your boot. Always remove the suction ring left on the windscreen using a nylon cloth. • When you leave your car, close all windows including your sunroof and ensure your car has been locked. 30
