your life, your home, your community. Yesterday was the hottest this year so far, 15 degrees I think. The last few days have been sunny and warm, a welcome change from all his rain. It’s been a funny old winter hasn’t it, not particularly cold but very wet and windy and quite miserable. Never mind, nearly there now, Spring is just around the corner and the daffodils are starting to brave coming out into the big wide world, cheering us up with their big yellow smiles. I remember a couple of years ago we had a really hot week in March possibly even reaching 20 degrees from memory, and then snow the week after! Very crazy weather this time of year. Mind you the saying is so true, ‘Never cast a clout until May’s out’. Don’t forget Mother’s Day and the clocks going forward this month, think it’s the same weekend, last one

of the month. Lots of our advertisers are helping you with Mothers Day ideas this year. It’s quite a big thing Mother’s Day, and quite right too! Lots of local stuff this month, I’ve had a look round Rossett Mill, there’s an update on the Gresford Library situation, and many of you may be aware the planning application on the Red Lion car park in Marford for a convenience store is going to appeal and is likely to be heard in May, to name but a few. I’ll let you browse at your leisure though and I’ll see you next month.

All the best, Jill

ACT NOW TO SAVE OUR LIBRARY

You are probably aware that Gresford Library is under threat of closure. The library will close at the end of the financial year unless the community can create and develop a social enterprise model to take over its running. With the proposed closure at the end of this month, the support of the local community is essential if our library service is to continue.

term aim is that the library becomes, or is part of, a community hub that will enhance the lives and wellbeing of those within the communities it serves. Work is already under way to secure funding and negotiate a lease with the local authority but more help and support will be needed to ensure the library can be saved and maintained in the future.

At a packed meeting held in Gresford on the 29th January 2014, there was overwhelming support for a continued service in the area. Subsequentl, a steering group has been set up to try and ensure this happens. The steering group is now establishing a nonprofit making company with charitable status which will be in a position to take over the running of the library.

To make this happen, goodwill and support from you is vital. We now need volunteers to run the library, as well as volunteers to help decorate and prepare the library for reopening. Volunteers will be an essential part of the continued running of the library and training and support will be provided. If you are able to help with a financial donation or give your time to get involved then please do; any donations and offers of help are welcome however small.

The plan is to create and develop a sustainable library service that will work in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council and serve the communities of Gresford, Marford, Burton, Rossett and Lavister. It will be the organisation's immediate and primary goal to keep and develop the present library building. Members also hope to expand the use of the building with creative writing courses, refreshments, visits by local authors/poets and history courses to name a few ideas. The organisation’s long-

If you want to help out then please contact Gresfordlibrary@hotmail.com. For users of Facebook, a Facebook page has been set up under the title ‘Gresford and District Community Library’. We would be grateful if you could ‘like’ and share the page. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Gresford and District Community Library Steering Group.

WI Centenary Baton Crosses Border The National Federation of Womens Institutes in England and Wales celebrates it’s centenary in 2015. A baton taken around the 69 federationsto mark the event left Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, where the first WI was formed, on 1st January 2014. After travelling across the North Wales Federations the baton arrived in Chester on 5th February 2014. The baton was given to David Mitchell, the Chester Town Crier, by Mair Westwood, Chairman of the Clwyd/Denbigh Federation. The Weaver Valley Choir of 40 or so WI members provided a rousing rendition of our anthem “Jerusalem” in wind and rain, energetically conducted by their leader Joyce Kirkpatrick. The party, which included the Lord Mayor, Councillor Jill Houlbrook, was led by the Town Crier down Bridge Street to the Cheshire federation headquarters at 11 White Friars. Our County Chairman, Frances Woollam, received the baton from Mair Westwood, Chairman of Clwyd/ Denbigh. The baton was taken to four venues across Cheshire, before being taken by the Cheshire Chairman to the Isle of Man. It will then come back to Lancashire and follow a convoluted route throughout

England and Wales, not forgetting the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. The baton’s final destination will be the 100th Annual General Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in London in June 2015 We are glad that the WI movement has continued to grow and evolve over the past hundred years. So many new institutes are starting at the moment, it is good to see younger women realising the value of the organisation. Gill Tanner Handbridge WI

The Governor of Gibraltar Born in Rossett! Lt Gen Sir James Dutton was appointed last year as the Governor of Gibraltar and commenced his new position in December 2013 as the official representative of the Queen. Many of us will be familiar with the Dutton name locally, and many of you will know at least by name Mr and Mrs Ben Dutton from Burton. I had the pleasure of chatting to Aileen recently in connection with her son and she explained her marriage to Edgar Dutton and their move to Curzon Park where they had 2 children Jane and James. Aileen was born in Rossett and had a twin brother-Ralph and two sisters, Muriel and Dorothy and two brothers, Jim and Jack. Their surname was Hawkins and owned, 'Newhaven Garage'. Aileen's brother Jack assisted his father. Sadly Aileen's twin brother Ralph died as a result of the last war. In due time Jane attended the Queen's School and James the King's School. Sadly Edgar died while the children were young. In due time Jane became a private secretary and James joined the Royal Marines- he has

since spent 37 years in the Royal marines including the Falklands. Also in Iraq he led 3 Commando Brigade during the 2003 US led invasion to topple Sadam Hussein. He served in Afghanistan as the Deputy Head of NATO led International Security Assistance Force in 2008 and 2009. He was also the Ministry of Defence's Director of NATO policy and served as Britain's Liason Officer to the Pentagon II attacks. From 2010 to 2013 on leaving the Royal Marines James worked as Project Manager for Bechtel, a large American Engineering company, on a project to replace the infrastructure of the country in Gabon, West Africa. A very impressive career and one of which the King's School will be proud. He is now Governor of Gibraltar-whilst this is largely a ceremonial role with ongoing controversy between the Spanish and the British over Gibraltar it may well be an interesting role- not forgetting Britain has held Gibraltar since 1713 and approximately 30,000 people currently live there.

My story, well I feel very lucky to be alive, four years ago my life changed forever on the 20/01/2014 I was advised a mass had been found at the head of my pancreas. I went to Liverpool Royal Hospital for my first consultation, where a consultant plus a lead nurse greeted me. I have to say at this point the seriousness of the situation dawned on me. All I was thinking was I’m going to die, you don’t see McMillan nurses unless it’s the end!! During the consultation, I was advised my best chance of survival would be an operation called a Whipple’s. I was told its major surgery and would take between 6-12hours to perform and I would then need to have a course of chemotherapy if it was malignant tumour. After my consultation I did, what I guess most people would do these days, use the internet to find out more information. On one hand I craved for the information, which would reassure me that everything is going to be ok. However the more I searched and didn’t find that information, the darker the cloud seemed above me, yet I felt that I still needed to be positive for everyone else. I then had a long 4 week wait before the operation where I had to have various tests to show I was fit enough to under go the surgery and survive. I run my own cleaning business and am a part time staff nurse, which also caused me

more worries as the business had lots of out goings which I would still need to pay and at the time I was in a new nursing position. The day of the surgery came and I have to say I wasn’t really prepared for the extent of this operation, I was fit healthy man prior to this and used to run on regular basis to keep fit so I expected to be on my feet within a couple of weeks. How wrong was I. After the operation I had various complications and realised if it was bad news some of the plans I had made I would not be able to do them. Dark days, thoughts were upon me. I was now scared of the biopsy results and what my future would hold. The results were good news and the tumour was still at stage two which meant I did not need chemotherapy. The operation was a complete success. It took me over 12 months to recover I still feel much weaker than prior to the operation but am alive and generally well. I planned to the run last year but with 3 bouts of pancreatitis I was unable to do so. I want to put something back as I am one of the lucky ones and able to live a full active life. Please donate what ever you can all monies will help. Many thanks, Gary.

Tales of France... with Sharon Newton

Bonjour! Alors the rusty key in hand I opened the front door hanging on a single hinge and stepped into the kitchen. I was so very excited! Did it matter that the handle came off in my hand, dead mice carcasses strewn the rotted wooden floor, cobwebs housed an array of 8 legged friends and water was dripping from the ceiling? Not one bit. This was all part of the dream. The main body of the house was strong, built of traditional stonework known as pierre (see insert), A-frame and roof joists of solid oak and having been in situ for some two hundred years were unlikely to cause me any problems even if the tiles all needed replacing. Window frames would all need replacing too, there wasn’t a bathroom or toilet and the oak staircase had started to drop into the cellar. All this aside I sat on a dusty old chair and popped the champagne! Where was I to start? One quartile was the ‘home’ whilst the other three quartiles would have housed the animals. This was common in the countryside as the animals would also heat the home. The house part was one up, one down, what would have been the parents bed under the stairs in one corner of the kitchen, the upstairs room had a double bed, two cots and a chair. It really was like going back in time although the family who had grown up there are still very much part of the village. This said, the property had been empty for over 30 years and the smell could testify to that!

is close to a déchetterie, what we know as a tip. I lost count of the number of trips after about 50! The smell was acrid! Eggs which would have been there for years, animal stained straw matted if now dry, jar after jar of French beans swimming in brown liquid and the poo bucket complete with lid! The challenge was not so much of a mass clear out covered with dirt, dust and goodness knows what else but there wasn’t any running water! Having started the dream in the summer I benefited from long hot days and I would lay the hose under the warming rays such I could hide my modesty in a rear outbuilding whilst I showered off. Basic but a hoot especially after Janneau, who will be mentioned a lot, discovered my outdoor en suite!

House and barn all cleared the real works were to commence! Trouble was, as some of you may know, it is either too hot, too cold, too wet, too dark, too dry or a holiday for French builders! Against my better judgement I Dressed to kill I started to make a plan. First therefore brought over British reinforcements, step to hire a skip and empty the place. Skip? In much to my peril! France, no chance. Rather every village or town à la prochaine…. 16

Over recent weeks, a number of local Rossett residents have approached me raising concerns about North Wales Police’s 101 nonemergency contact number. For those of you who are unaware of the 101 system, it is an alternative contact number for North Wales Police when members of the public want to report incidents that are not classed as an emergency and therefore do not warrant the use of 999. An example would be to report Anti-Social Behaviour, or report the fact that a member of the public has found some property such as a wallet or a bike. A number of local residents in Rossett have approached me raising their concerns about not being able to get through, some wondering if the fact that Rossett has a different area code (01244) may have something to do with it. May I reassure all Rossett residents that the 01244 area code does not affect the use of the 101 system. I know in February that there were several days of bad weather where the volume of calls to North Wales Police was significantly high and therefore getting through to North Wales Police did prove rather difficult. Please continue to use the 101 system as your calls are valuable to us. If you would rather speak to me personally, (my contact details are listed below) please get in contact. I am more than happy to help in any way I can. May I pass on my apologies if you have struggled to get through on the 101 system but do please continue to use the 101 system to report non-emergency incidents. Gresford. Dog Fouling – areas of concern are the High Street, Gresford and grounds of the Memorial Hall/Allington Park

Anti-Social Behaviour – areas of concern are in and around the Gresford Memorial Hall Marford. Parking concerns outside the Rofft Primary School, Marford Speeding on Marford Hill Your local policing team and partnership agencies are actively working on these priorities and this will continue over the coming months. NorthWales Police are conducting high visibility foot patrols around the areas of concern, in particular outside the schools. ROSSETT MILL UPDATE

You have probably noticed scaffolding at Rossett Mill for quite a while now and the fact that the unsightly metal shutters have also been removed from the windows for a while too, and may have gathered it has new owners after its recent period of uncertainty. You will be pleased to hear Rossett Mill was purchased in December 2012 by local Chester people Celia and Brendan, and they moved in, or rather on site, and not in the actual mill in July 2013. Quite simply they fell in love with it at first sight and are making it their family home. Painting and chimney

repairs have been undertaken already but it will need a little more work before it's the family home they want. As a grade 11* listed building they will consult the local authority planners to do this. Celia kindly showed me round. It really is beautiful if you like olde worlde quirky buildings and lots of wood, but it does need a fair amount of work to make it a safe, comfortable and habitable home. Celia informed me that they would like to protect the history and the essence of the building. It was very kind of them to let me have a look round and talk to them, and I wish them all the best with their renovation programme.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD

Watering of flower tubs It may seem a strange request given the recent deluges, but here in Gresford we are looking for someone to water around twenty flower tubs twice a week between April and September inclusive. We expect to refresh the flowers in our tubs around the weekend of 22nd to 23rd March (check Gresford Community Council website and notice boards for more details). If you are interested in quoting for the watering please contact me and I can pass this on. Playground at Parsonage Close A short while ago I contacted a number or residents in Newtown and Parsonage Close over the proposed closure of the playground and the suggestion that the community council take it on. My community council colleagues have committed themselves to our current play areas only. Therefore, the play equipment here is to be removed. The possibility of applying for grants for a community garden has been suggested to enhance this area and I would welcome your views on this or any other suggestions. Traffic Measures I have had a number of complaints about vehicles parking half on the road and half on the pavement. As this is an offence, I have asked our PCSOs to look into this. I would ask any guilty parties to be more considerate of others in this matter. The PCSOs are on the lookout generally for inconsiderate parking and a special consideration is to be given to the two school areas. A New Gresford Library! There were about a hundred people at the public meeting regarding library services in January, which I found both exhilarating and daunting in equal measure. I am confident 22

business of the month

Other than re homing strays and other cats and kittens from their re homing centre in Wrexham, the Cat Protection help with problems too. Simon, as you can see is a perfectly friendly and normal little cat. However, he turned up as a stray and started making a nuisance of himself terrorising the local pet cats. Just defending a territory he thought was his, he started to fight and bully the other cats out of the area, and caused quite a bit of damage and some hefty vet bills for the owners of the other local cat. The cat protection helped catch him and neuter him to try and calm him down and covered the cost of this. In the end they also took him into their rehoming shelter to find him a nice home of his own. The local pets were pleased! I'm sure Simon has gone to a lovely new home by now where there are no other cats to compete with, but if you would like to support the charitable work they do by volunteering or make a donation you can get in touch on 01978 313574. Or if you would like to give a home to cat in need, you

can wander round the shelter and meet the cats every day apart from Thursday between 11am and 3pm. All cats are given vet health checks, are fully vaccinated, neutered, micro chipped, flead and wormed before they come to you and a donation is required to contribute to the costs of this.

Slavonian Grebe (summer plumage - right) Slavonian Grebe (winter plumage - below) © Hugh Linn

Last month’s gale force winds and torrential rain brought inland a number of bird species normally found in coastal locations. Waterlogged fields provided a welcome haven for storm-driven wildfowl seeking refuge away from the worst of the weather. Steve Palin found one displaced marine duck, a female Scaup, associating with Pintails and Wigeon on the Trevalyn floods. From the same area there have been unconfirmed reports of Whooper Swans and a possible White-fronted Goose. While the River Alyn was in full spate a Grey Wagtail, temporarily forced off Rossett weir, was spotted in the middle of Burton Road foraging for invertebrates. A small flock of up to 9 Goosanders (all female) spent most of the winter on Gresford Flash. On Llay Pool a Slavonian Grebe proved a major attraction. Now often renamed the Horned Grebe this attractive little bird is remarkable for the transformation it undergoes each year from its sober black and white winter feathers to the colourful plumage acquired for the breeding season - a change so dramatic that it is hard to believe it is has not morphed into a completely different species. Slavonian

26

Grebes prefer to winter on coastal waters and are unusual inland at this time of the year. One of their predictable winter haunts is Beddmanarch Bay in Anglesey where in Spring the progressive plumage change can be seen as they assume breeding plumage prior to migrating north. There is a small breeding population in the north of Scotland but most of our winter visitors come from Iceland, Scandinavia and northern Europe. By mid-March summer migrants should be dribbling in. Sandmartins, Wheatears and Chiffchaffs are usually the earliest to arrive. Chiffchaffs, easier to hear than to see, are named after their distinctive song which is just that - “chiff chaff chiff chaff” endlessly repeated following a barely audible sotto voce warmup of “chirrup, chirrup, chirrup“. Llay Pool is a good spot for migrant waders in Spring. Last year Ringed and Little Ringed Plovers, Common Sandpipers, Dunlins, Oystercatchers and Redshanks were all recorded.

Maes-y-Pant - we’re getting there!

Three Thank-yous and an All Fools’ Day Meeting I hope all of you who live in Marford and Gresford have received your free leaflet about Maes-y-Pant. It was intended as a thankyou to volunteers and supporters alike and for the support received from Gresford Community Council. I can’t yet give a date for when we will put in a footpath on Pant Lane and resurface the car park entrance – and yes, you’re right, the car park itself is a bit of a muddy mess at present, so we’ll have to think of ways of improving it. For those of you who are still finding your way around Maes-y-Pant, I hope you find the map in the leaflet of use. Ironically, the surfaced footpaths have stood up well to the heavy rainfall we’ve had recently, even if the car park hasn’t. The unmade paths are also shown on the map, as I know some of you prefer the natural paths, but you will need boots in places. Even so, most of the surfaced paths are blending in with their surroundings very well, although there are still loose chippings in parts. We would also like to thank the volunteers’ group from All Saints Church and all of you who attended the coffee morning in February in Church House. We raised £412, including proceeds from a raffle. A wonderful effort and what’s more there were excellent cakes and coffee.

There is yet a third thankyou and that is to all of you who have joined the Friends of Maes-y-Pant (FoM), both through oneoff donations as well as annual direct debit payments. We have our first FoM meeting at 7.30pm, 1 April in the Marford Community Centre. For this first meeting we would like to open it to everyone who is interested. I know there are many calls on your time and finances but I hope that in achieving what we have in the last 2 years, we have shown that we are worth supporting. We still have important projects in the pipeline for this year but I don’t want to jump the gun until I can confirm the details. Spring is around the corner – or is it here already? We’ve renovated and installed twelve nestboxes on site and birds are showing a big interest already. We have previously created glades and also have a meadow area. It’s our plan to sow British woodland plants and meadow flowers. Hopefully I can tell you more at a later date.

By April 24th, spring will be in full bloom in Wrexham. However, so will the music and comedy scene be, as the Focus Wales Festival delivers 3 days of the finest both have to offer. Playing in a range of venues across the town centre (some more unusual than others) will be established and even legendary talent, alongside some fantastic up-and-coming artists. On the Thursday, the great John Cooper Clark, punk poet, broadcaster and hilarious raconteur, will be performing in the William Aston Hall and this surely is a must-see for all. However, careful balancing will be needed to ensure that optimum use is made of the time available as during the Focus Wales festival being in two places at once is a required skill. Damo Suzuki is former frontman for the hugely inventive and influential German pro-rock combo Can and will be at Central Station on the Thursday evening at the same time as John Cooper Clarke is at Glyndwr; you see the problem! Poltergeist are the instrumental side-project of Echo and the Bunnymen members Will Sergeant and Les Pattinson and headline Central Station on Friday Night. Gulp is the latest project by Guto Pryce (former Super Furry Animals) and promises a dream-folk electronica feast and they headline Central Station on the Saturday night. Another must-see will be North Wales’ very own Golden Fable, no doubt performing tracks from their soon-to-be-released second album. Noone can seriously be planning to miss the

performance of Wrexham legends Terminal in The Commercial on Friday night. Once favourites of John Peel, this enduring postpunk act came so close to breaking through in the early ‘80’s and still deliver a powerpacked set of classics today. Also local heroes, Heal The Last Stand will be performing material from their hugely anticipated new release in the Catrin Finch Centre on Thursday. Other local groups you will want to see are Orient Machine, Sparrowhawks and the excellent Maydays. But possibly the real joy of Focus Wales is the discovery of a band you’ve never heard before, but are unable to live without ever again. You could be in St Giles’s Parish Church, or Wrexham County Museum, or even at the free performances at Queens Square on the Saturday, and the band could be from Sweden, Germany, Brazil or Canada to name but a few of the countries that will be represented. One thing is certain; you will not be disappointed by the music or the comedy which includes shows by Gary Delaney of Mock the Week and Norman Lovett of Red Dwarf. Add to this three days of conferences with panels including former Creation Records boss Alan McGee (Oasis, Primal Scream etc), Huw Stephens of Radio 1 and Louder Than War boss and leading music journalist John Robb, and you have a feast that is difficult to ignore. For further information and ticket details, visit the Focus Wales website at www. focuswales.com

Recipe of the month

Spicy meatballs

Serves 6. Ingredients: 500g minced chicken, turkey, lamb, beef or pork 1 medium onion 2 garlic cloves, crushed or chopped 2 tsp mild or medium curry powder 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp garam masala ½ tsp paprika or cayenne pepper 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped 1 egg, beaten 50g fresh breadcrumbs 1 tbsp olive oil

Divide the meat mixture into 15-18 evensized pieces and shape into balls (they should be about the size of a walnut). Heat the oil in the frying pan over a medium heat and add the meatballs using a spoon. Cook them for 5 mins, turning until golden brown. Remove from the pan and place them on to the tray. Bake in the oven for 15-20 mins. Remove from the oven. Remember to use oven gloves! Allow to cool slightly and serve with a fresh, crisp green salad, some pitta bread and tomato salsa.

How it’s done: Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Put the mince into the mixing bowl. Add the onions, garlic, curry powder, cumin, garam masala, paprika or cayenne pepper and coriander, then mix well. By adding these spices, you’ll get a delicious flavour without having to add any salt. Add the beaten egg and breadcrumbs, then mix again.

We have the most amazing selection of local, quality meat at the farm shop. We also have a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and bedding plants! Shop local. You know it makes sense.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk Chester Road/Chapel Lane. Residents of Chapel Lane have expressed concern about traffic ignoring the ‘access only’ signs and using the lane as a shortcut. I have proposed that Chapel Lane is made ‘No Entry’ from Chester Road. The scheme will create a metre length one way at the junction. This will still enable residents to drive in both directions from their properties. The scheme will be advertised together with the proposed 20mph speed limit on Chester Road. All residents of Chapel Lane will be notified and have the opportunity to express a view. The slow progress of the Chester Road scheme is due to the staffing cutbacks. We have one officer drafting all permanent and temporary traffic orders for the whole County Borough. In the meantime our PCSO will monitor vehicles using the road as a short cut. Also, thanks to his efforts, we have had several visits from the ‘Go Safe’ speed detection van outside Darland School.

I am afraid to say that this saga continues. There are so many different issues being raised by concerned residents that I am arranging a further public meeting. I expect to have representatives from council departments, including engineering and legal, present on the night. In response to the concerns about trees, we have reduced the number of trees to be felled to 6, all of which have horse chestnut canker. It seems this is a small price to pay to alleviate the risk of flooding to people’s homes. The trees will be replaced with more appropriate species such as oak. Other issues, such as the capacity of the pond to take the water, will be dealt with. On this subject, thanks are due to Council staff who responded promptly to the recent flooding and deployed a tanker to take away nine full loads of surface water.

SEIZE THE DAY

Every year we highlight the importance of using your annual tax allowances in various forms of savings and investments, and by the time you read this article you will have only a few weeks to use this year’s allowances before the deadline of 5th April. The reason we put so much emphasis on using your ISA or pension allowance is the old adage ‘use it or lose it’. You are able to backdate pension investments to some extent, but with ISAs in particular once the year finishes you lose the allowance. Any individual savings, the maximum paid into an ISA each year would by now have sheltered £124,080 from tax*. In addition there is also the opportunity to save for children and grandchildren, £3,720 this year by way of Junior ISAs which, if saved every year, would be a substantial help in paying off a student loan or debt. Half of all ISA savings (£200 billion) are in cash ISAs*and 80% of all subscriptions made last year were in cash ISAs* (*source: HMRC, 2013). The reality is, though, that the tax benefits provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain low for a number of years to come and, regrettably, savers

cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. Stocks and Shares ISAs provide access to these long term assets and might prove a better return of capital and income. With pension planning in particular, saving for the long term every year is the most effective way to provide a retirement income. Two thirds of the UK population thinks their retirement planning is inadequate, and the average pension pot will last 7 years based on anticipated retirement income requirements (source: HSBC, ‘The Future of Retirement’, 2013). Clearly, as a nation we are not making adequate provision for our future. However, careful planning and a commitment to action can still help us realise designs we have, whether humble or grand. Surveys consistently demonstrate that there is a direct link between financial planning and saving more, however modest our income. People who use professional advice have two and half times the retirement savings of those who have not sought advice (source: HSBC, ‘The Future of Retirement’, 2013). The tax year-end is a time to seize your opportunities, and start to make a difference now for the future.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are generally dependant on individual circumstances. Marathon Challenge

Many of you may recognise me from jogging along the streets of Gresford and surrounding villages in all sorts of wintery weather! On April 13th 2014 I will exchange the back lanes of Rossett for the main streets of London. I will be running the London Marathon to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. The hospice is based in Backford, Chester and offers free care and support for those living with incurable illness. The Hospice cares for more than 1,500 people every year and provides support to their families, friends and carers. To make sure I cross that finish line I have been working hard following a very long five month training plan; running in daylight or the dark in the mainly cold, wet and windy weather. All support and encouragement

to keep me going is gratefully received and donations can be made at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/KatieTaylor10 Thank you!

IMPORTANT - computer problems February 2014

Are you a patient of Alyn Family Doctors? Did you go to the doctor between 5th and 14th February 2014? As you may know, during the weekend of 15th and 16th February 2014 the computer system at Alyn Family Doctors suffered a serious breakdown. This was entirely out of our control; GP practice computers throughout Wales are owned and maintained by the NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS). The breakdown caused a problem in the computer memory which meant that the records of all appointments and consultations from 5th to 14th February 2014 were destroyed. This has caused a huge amount of difficulties, and we are working with NWIS to minimise the problems. In the meantime, we are asking for your help. If you saw a doctor or nurse during that week, and the doctor or nurse agreed to write a letter or make a referral on your behalf, please contact the surgery to check that the action you are expecting has been completed. If you have any questions, please ask. We apologise to all our patients for any inconvenience this situation has caused and assure you that we are doing our best to make sure that the problems are resolved as soon as possible.

gardeningtips Handy hints to keep your busy throughout March EARLY MARCH • Sow bedding plants, clean your green house just before Spring sowing to maximise light levels. • If the weather is mild enough lift and divide perennials to promote healthy growth, it’s also a good way of getting free plants. • In warmer areas if weather allows sow early crops of carrots and broad beans under cloches. • Give your beds a boost by adding a thick layer of mulch around plants to lock in moisture and ensure beds don’t dry out, also will keep weeds at bay. MID MARCH • Sow summer bedding seeds- start sowing summer bedding plants that need a longer growing season. • Plant dahlia tubers in trays of damp compost, leaving the stems exposed. Place the tray in a greenhouse and within weeks you’ll have new shoots. • Prune hardy fuschias- give plants a hard

prune leaving 15cm to 30cm of stem from which new growth will shoot. Only prune when buds are visible. • Boost pot grown shrubs with a layer of compost. If your plant has outgrown its pot, tease out the roots before repotting. • Sow beetroot., tomato and courgette seeds, and plant out early potatoes. LATE MARCH • Install a water butt • Start pruning hedges • Get ready for hanging baskets by sowing annual seeds • Spread a slow release fertiliser around emerging plants to get your flower beds off to a good start. • Now is a good time to stock up on young plants like geraniums, fuchsias and marguerites • Feed your lawn- A spring feed will keep your lawn vigorous and less prone to weeds and moss. Also start giving your lawn a weekly trim, regular cutting will keep your lawn thick and green and free of weeds. • Spring clean your pond
