your life, your home, your community. Nearly Spring. Is it me or should the daffodils be out in force by now? Always a welcome sight their fresh yellow smiling heads. It’s amazing how they flower year on year without us having to replant the bulbs, unlike a lot of things in this modern world which cannot compare their lasting power to the daffodils. I suppose you really get your money out of daffodils! Anyway they will be here soon and always a reminder to me that Mother’s Day is just around the corner. It’s a little later this year towards the end of the month on the 30th, for those that need to be reminded.
amazing. So out there, on the world wide web there’s a whole country chatting about damp problems on forums, quite comical really. According to the internet this will be down to cracked external plastering, failure of flashing, chimney cowel problem, leaky gutters or roofing problem. Apparently all that looks fine, so despite the use of the internet the mystery has not been solved! I thought I’d share this with you, not because I think you all like to hear about damp, although most of you have older houses in these parts and can probably empathise with this, but just to remind us about the power of the internet. Mind you it can’t replace the local builder and his years of experience, now where did I put Neil Woolleys telephone number! In reality I think it will be let’s keep an eye on that and hopefully it will go away!
I hope none of you have been troubled too much by the rain other than just getting fed up of it. I was talking to a friend who was concerned about damp in the upstairs of their house, just above the skirting board on one of the internal walls. It’s an old house and I thought it Keep dry and warm this March and look would be something to do with all the out for those daffodils. rain we’ve had. It wouldn’t take Einstein to make that assumption would it? It’s All the best, Jill great you can now google virtually anything and find info on everything these days. Even forums on damp exist, it’s just

An interesting item on Bangor Isycoed was published in the Wrexham Advertiser on August 21 1875 that caused me some amusement and I thought I would share it with you. ‘A middle-aged man, residing in this district with his mother, was taken ill some days ago and died. As he and his mother were supposed to be excessively poor, and the woman anything but a pleasant neighbour, none of the neighbours, or relatives, would interfere or assist at the funeral, and the relieving officer had considerable difficulty in obtaining the necessary assistance. The man was however buried, and arrangements were made to remove the old woman to the workhouse. A few of the relatives had been persuaded by the officer to render her the necessary attention until Monday morning when the relieving officer and the master of the workhouse could arrive with a vehicle to remove her. When they arrived they found a change had come over the relatives. They would now do anything for the poor old woman, in preference to her being sent to the workhouse. The reason for the change soon became known. They had been rummaging in her house and had
6
found a bankbook, showing a credit balance of £217.19s 6d with three year’s interest to be added. No, No! The old woman was not to go to the workhouse - they would take care of her and these good Samaritans signed an undertaking to refund all funeral and removal expenses. They also arranged a division of the cash, and one of them took the book to the bank, in order to give the necessary notice. On arriving there, and comparing the passbook with the main ledger, it was found that the pounds were all a fiction: the shillings and pence being the sum total of the deposit. The reason for the difference between the two books is reported to be this: the man had proposed marriage to a person in the neighbourhood a few years ago, and in order to induce the woman to marry him, he had invested one pound in the bank and manipulated the figures until the account had assumed the respectable proportion which it now presented. The exquisitely unhappy frame of mind of these unselfish people might be imagined, on finding those two hundred and seventeen beautiful yellow sovereigns melt into thin air.’ The ‘act of charity’ cost them dearly, it was just as well that no names were mentioned!
At the beginning of this year Maelor Dental Care transformed the downstairs surgery and undertook major refurbishment for Peter and his loyal and wonderful patients.
Peter hard at work
Peter has been at this practice for 22 years and a lot of his patients have also been with him for all this time. So doing this has been important to Peter and all of the team at Maelor Dental Care. Rhian Evans the practice manager would like to thank our patients for their understanding throughout the refurbishment of the new surgery and for all their lovely comments.

Recipe of the month
Spicy meatballs
Serves 6. Ingredients: 500g minced chicken, turkey, lamb, beef or pork 1 medium onion 2 garlic cloves, crushed or chopped 2 tsp mild or medium curry powder 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp garam masala ½ tsp paprika or cayenne pepper 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped 1 egg, beaten 50g fresh breadcrumbs 1 tbsp olive oil
Divide the meat mixture into 15-18 evensized pieces and shape into balls (they should be about the size of a walnut). Heat the oil in the frying pan over a medium heat and add the meatballs using a spoon. Cook them for 5 mins, turning until golden brown. Remove from the pan and place them on to the tray. Bake in the oven for 15-20 mins. Remove from the oven. Remember to use oven gloves! Allow to cool slightly and serve with a fresh, crisp green salad, some pitta bread and tomato salsa.
How it’s done: Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Put the mince into the mixing bowl. Add the onions, garlic, curry powder, cumin, garam masala, paprika or cayenne pepper and coriander, then mix well. By adding these spices, you’ll get a delicious flavour without having to add any salt. Add the beaten egg and breadcrumbs, then mix again.
We have the most amazing selection of local, quality meat at the farm shop. We also have a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and bedding plants! Shop local. You know it makes sense.

I would like to start off this month to let you know what has been happening in the Wrexham and surrounding areas. We are still experiencing thefts of catalytic converters off vehicles. There was another stolen in the Wrexham area at the end of January. We have had one incident of this kind in the village before Christmas so please be extra vigilante and report any suspicious circumstances to 101. Also we have recently had reports of suspicious males – 3 white males in their 20’s attempting to sell tools but when they were refused they left the area. They were travelling in a White Transit Van in the Llanarmon area at a farm, so please be aware of this and don’t be caught out. Unfortunately we have had a burglary in Marchwiel during the last month, anyone who has any information or any idea who may be responsible for this please contact us. Your call will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Another issue that has raised its ugly head again in Marchwiel and the surrounding villages is DOG FOULING. It has been brought to our attention that a few particular bad areas are the top of Elwyn Drive in Marchwiel up towards the main road, the whole of Penley village, Whitchurch Road and the river bank path in Bangor on Dee. You know who you are so Please, Please pick up your dog mess. It’s disgusting and dangerous and will not be tolerated by any means. The biggest threat to public health from dog excrement is Toxocariasis. Toxocariasis most commonly affects children between 18 months and five years and in some cases may cause blindness. We have recently received new tickets from the Council and PCSO’s and Council Environmental Enforcement Officers are
under pressure to give these tickets out, so be aware that WE WILL be issuing these tickets to anyone we see committing any of these offences listed below. Littering Dog Fouling Dog Exclusion – anyone in charge of a dog permitting them to enter or remain on any land where dogs are excluded. Ie. Childrens parks, football fields etc. (There are signs in these areas so there is no excuse) Dogs on Lead by direction – person who does not comply with a direction given by an officer to put and keep the dog on a lead. ALL THESE OFFENCES CARRY A £75 FINE – YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Alternately if you witness anyone allowing their dog to foul without cleaning up after them it can be reported directly to Wrexham Council of 01978 298989. This can be done anonymously if you so wish.

THE LAST OF THE ‘DICKEYS’ by Terry Davies
Like many of you I’m sure, I enjoy a good murder mystery on the telly, such as Midsomer Murders, though I must say that I preferred the first series with John Nettles in the leading role. Although a serious actor, John became a star when he played ‘Bergerac’ in the television series based on Jersey in the Channel Islands, but the programme produced another star as well - his car, a maroon 1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster. Strangely enough, in real life he hated this car just as much as John Thaw (Inspector Morse) hated his maroon Jaguar Mk.2 in later years!
12/50 similarly endowed - and that was a long, long time ago! However, now we know that the Triumph 1800 Roadster was actually a five-seater at a push, though it was a bit of a struggle for the two passengers to get into the ‘dickey’ seats for their bracing, open air ride! Its 65 b.h.p. overhead-valve engine, mated to a four speed gearbox, gave it a top speed of 76 m.p.h. and an overall fuel consumption of around 20 m.p.g. Not exactly a sparkling performance, but when it inherited the Standard Vanguard’s 2088c.c., four cylinder unit mated to a three speed gearbox in 1948 (becoming the Triumph 2000 Roadster in the process) the extra three b.h.p. gave it a slightly better performance, but the three speed box instead of the original four speed unit made it a tad less sporty! In this form it cost £991, but was discontinued in October 1949. When I interviewed enthusiast Trefor Liddington at his home at Sun Bank near Llangollen nearly 18 years ago, he said he had three of these cars- a 1946 ‘1800’ model and a 1948 ‘2000 ’model which he used alternately, as well as a third Roadster lying in the grass with nettles growing through it, awaiting renovation.
The Triumph Roadster was first introduced in 1946, powered by a 1776c.c. four cylinder engine. It was called the Triumph 1800 Roadster and cost £895. It really was an attractive, sporting drophead, with steel wings and an aluminium body on an ash frame. It was particularly impressive from the front with its chrome radiator, large chrome headlamps and twin chrome air horns, and although at first glance it gave the impression of being a twoseater, on further scrutiny you soon notice the right hand steering column gear change and a bench front seat that accommodated three adults at a squeeze! So, it’s a three seater- but wait a minute, why does the curved boot lid seem to have windows in it? Well, fold up the glazed wind deflector and fold down the boot lid, and another two seats are revealed - ‘dickey’seats! My form master at Grove So that’s where John and his co-star first met! Park School, ‘Sammy Gunnel’, owned an Alvis TERRY DAVIES. 12

gardeningtips Handy hints to keep your busy throughout March EARLY MARCH • Sow bedding plants, clean your green house just before Spring sowing to maximise light levels. • If the weather is mild enough lift and divide perennials to promote healthy growth, it’s also a good way of getting free plants. • In warmer areas if weather allows sow early crops of carrots and broad beans under cloches. • Give your beds a boost by adding a thick layer of mulch around plants to lock in moisture and ensure beds don’t dry out, also will keep weeds at bay. MID MARCH • Sow summer bedding seeds- start sowing summer bedding plants that need a longer growing season. • Plant dahlia tubers in trays of damp compost, leaving the stems exposed. Place the tray in a greenhouse and within weeks you’ll have new shoots. • Prune hardy fuschias- give plants a hard
prune leaving 15cm to 30cm of stem from which new growth will shoot. Only prune when buds are visible. • Boost pot grown shrubs with a layer of compost. If your plant has outgrown its pot, tease out the roots before repotting. • Sow beetroot., tomato and courgette seeds, and plant out early potatoes. LATE MARCH • Install a water butt • Start pruning hedges • Get ready for hanging baskets by sowing annual seeds • Spread a slow release fertiliser around emerging plants to get your flower beds off to a good start. • Now is a good time to stock up on young plants like geraniums, fuchsias and marguerites • Feed your lawn- A spring feed will keep your lawn vigorous and less prone to weeds and moss. Also start giving your lawn a weekly trim, regular cutting will keep your lawn thick and green and free of weeds. • Spring clean your pond

SEIZE THE DAY
Every year we highlight the importance of using your annual tax allowances in various forms of savings and investments, and by the time you read this article you will have only a few weeks to use this year’s allowances before the deadline of 5th April. The reason we put so much emphasis on using your ISA or pension allowance is the old adage ‘use it or lose it’. You are able to backdate pension investments to some extent, but with ISAs in particular once the year finishes you lose the allowance. Any individual savings, the maximum paid into an ISA each year would by now have sheltered £124,080 from tax*. In addition there is also the opportunity to save for children and grandchildren, £3,720 this year by way of Junior ISAs which, if saved every year, would be a substantial help in paying off a student loan or debt. Half of all ISA savings (£200 billion) are in cash ISAs*and 80% of all subscriptions made last year were in cash ISAs* (*source: HMRC, 2013). The reality is, though, that the tax benefits provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain low for a number of years to come and, regrettably, savers
cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. Stocks and Shares ISAs provide access to these long term assets and might prove a better return of capital and income. With pension planning in particular, saving for the long term every year is the most effective way to provide a retirement income. Two thirds of the UK population thinks their retirement planning is inadequate, and the average pension pot will last 7 years based on anticipated retirement income requirements (source: HSBC, ‘The Future of Retirement’, 2013). Clearly, as a nation we are not making adequate provision for our future. However, careful planning and a commitment to action can still help us realise designs we have, whether humble or grand. Surveys consistently demonstrate that there is a direct link between financial planning and saving more, however modest our income. People who use professional advice have two and half times the retirement savings of those who have not sought advice (source: HSBC, ‘The Future of Retirement’, 2013). The tax year-end is a time to seize your opportunities, and start to make a difference now for the future.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are generally dependant on individual circumstances. The Governor of Gibraltar Born in Rossett! Lt Gen Sir James Dutton was appointed last year as the Governor of Gibraltar and commenced his new position in December 2013 as the official representative of the Queen. Many of us will be familiar with the Dutton name locally, and many of you will know at least by name Mr and Mrs Ben Dutton from Burton. I had the pleasure of chatting to Aileen recently in connection with her son and she explained her marriage to Edgar Dutton and their move to Curzon Park where they had 2 children Jane and James. Aileen was born in Rossett and had a twin brother-Ralph and two sisters, Muriel and Dorothy and two brothers, Jim and Jack. Their surname was Hawkins and owned, 'Newhaven Garage'. Aileen's brother Jack assisted his father. Sadly Aileen's twin brother Ralph died as a result of the last war. In due time Jane attended the Queen's School and James the King's School. Sadly Edgar died while the children were young. In due time Jane became a private secretary and James joined the Royal Marines- he has
since spent 37 years in the Royal marines including the Falklands. Also in Iraq he led 3 Commando Brigade during the 2003 US led invasion to topple Sadam Hussein. He served in Afghanistan as the Deputy Head of NATO led International Security Assistance Force in 2008 and 2009. He was also the Ministry of Defence's Director of NATO policy and served as Britain's Liason Officer to the Pentagon II attacks. From 2010 to 2013 on leaving the Royal Marines James worked as Project Manager for Bechtel, a large American Engineering company, on a project to replace the infrastructure of the country in Gabon, West Africa. A very impressive career and one of which the King's School will be proud. He is now Governor of Gibraltar-whilst this is largely a ceremonial role with ongoing controversy between the Spanish and the British over Gibraltar it may well be an interesting role- not forgetting Britain has held Gibraltar since 1713 and approximately 30,000 people currently live there.

My story, well I feel very lucky to be alive, four years ago my life changed forever on the 20/01/2014 I was advised a mass had been found at the head of my pancreas. I went to Liverpool Royal Hospital for my first consultation, where a consultant plus a lead nurse greeted me. I have to say at this point the seriousness of the situation dawned on me. All I was thinking was I’m going to die, you don’t see McMillan nurses unless it’s the end!! During the consultation, I was advised my best chance of survival would be an operation called a Whipple’s. I was told its major surgery and would take between 6-12hours to perform and I would then need to have a course of chemotherapy if it was malignant tumour. After my consultation I did, what I guess most people would do these days, use the internet to find out more information. On one hand I craved for the information, which would reassure me that everything is going to be ok. However the more I searched and didn’t find that information, the darker the cloud seemed above me, yet I felt that I still needed to be positive for everyone else. I then had a long 4 week wait before the operation where I had to have various tests to show I was fit enough to under go the surgery and survive. I run my own cleaning business and am a part time staff nurse, which also caused me
more worries as the business had lots of out goings which I would still need to pay and at the time I was in a new nursing position. The day of the surgery came and I have to say I wasn’t really prepared for the extent of this operation, I was fit healthy man prior to this and used to run on regular basis to keep fit so I expected to be on my feet within a couple of weeks. How wrong was I. After the operation I had various complications and realised if it was bad news some of the plans I had made I would not be able to do them. Dark days, thoughts were upon me. I was now scared of the biopsy results and what my future would hold. The results were good news and the tumour was still at stage two which meant I did not need chemotherapy. The operation was a complete success. It took me over 12 months to recover I still feel much weaker than prior to the operation but am alive and generally well. I planned to the run last year but with 3 bouts of pancreatitis I was unable to do so. I want to put something back as I am one of the lucky ones and able to live a full active life. Please donate what ever you can all monies will help. Many thanks, Gary.

Tales of France... Bonjour! I hope you enjoyed ‘Tales of France’ in your February Essentiallyours. Since my introduction I have been spending more time in this area and as with Overton reminding me of France, I spot many things dotted around which prompt many more tales. The neat trio of fosse septique (sceptic tanks) at Althrey Court, opposite the racecourse brought a smile to my face. Eighteen months of waiting for quotes, soil tests and eventually a rather large hole in my garden!! Alors, picking up from where I left off, my flight booked I picked up my hire car at Bellegarde, the regional airport just on the outskirts of Limoges and headed for my first viewing. I did remember to stay right! I will never forget the mix of feelings, excitement, apprehension, scepticism, hope…could one truly buy a property in France for around 20,000 EURO? On approach to the first property I had prearranged to view I was pleasantly surprised, detached, stone cottage, roof looked ‘okay’, large garden, cute, all looked as it had been described. Over waddled the cutest of couples, both four feet tall if for an inch with 5 teeth between them. Monsieur proudly opened the door and stepped aside. Ah! That explained the price! A perfect ‘V’ greeted me, the interior had totally collapsed and all its contents stacked as they had fallen. A little despondent if not entirely 28
with Sharon Newton surprised the next handful of properties didn’t present any better options, every one in need of serious TLC and a very hefty contingency budget! Returning to the airport, ideal dream slipping away, there was a property which the agent hadn’t originally mentioned. Turning the corner into Merly, an idyllic hamlet close to the town of Rochechouart, my knees went, heart raced and I simply knew before even stepping out of the car that I had found my dream French home. I filled up with tears as I excitedly spurted to the agent, “I want it”. She thought I was mad. A few weeks later there I sat in the Notaires office, hardly able to understand a word, not at that time being a French speaker, and as I was handed the pen to sign I looked into the sky and said to myself, “I’m going to do it Dad, it just feels right”. Old, rusty key in hand I opened the front door which lead straight into the kitchen…. What had I taken on?! Au fait….La Murette, twinned with Overton, is located in Isère, the Rhone Alps region of France, a quaint village popular with Brits being conveniently close to Grenoble airport and not too far a drive to delightful Lyon. La Murette I hear shares a popular venue with Overton….a busy petagne pitch! Can anybody tell me where I might find this s’il vous plait?

Work in progress at the former Worthenbury Arms in the centre of the village will result in the provision of five new flats, as a great improvement after the steady deterioration of an important building. The original plans, agreed by the Willington and Worthenbury Community Council, intended a smaller pub to be retained on the premises, with a single house developed alongside, but in the present difficult climate for pubs, this has not proved viable, and the new development seemed a reasonable alternative, although there is concern by the council that parking is not adequate for five new homes. Another plan in mind for Worthenbury is the development of a garden and picnic area behind the Worthenbury Arms and extending to the bank of the stream, where the Emral and Wych Brooks join to form the Worthenbury Brook. The council has received a generous offer from the owners of this patch of land, Messrs Gordon Mytton, to make use of it at a nominal rent for the immediate future, and the council is now considering how it can be cleared of weeds, and made attractive by the addition of picnic tables and benches. The Community Council is also pressing for improvements to the road surface on the A525 at Holly Bush, and has recently replaced a plaque on the war Memorial in Tallarn Green. Michael Arnold, Clerk, The Willington Worthenbury Community Council.

January got off to an exciting start for 1st Overton-on-Dee Brownies. As this is the centenary year for Brownies throughout Britain, we started the year with a party. The girls played lots of games, & enjoyed food supplied by the Buck Hotel Bangor-on-Dee.
Did you know? Brownies were first organized by Lord Baden-Powell in 1914, to complete the range of age groups for girls in Scouting. They were first run as the youngest group in the Guide Association by Agnes Baden-Powell, Lord Baden-Powell's younger sister. In 1918 his wife, Lady Olave Baden-Powell, took over the responsibility for the Girl Guides and thus for Brownies. Originally the girls were called Rosebuds, but were renamed by Lord Baden-Powell after the girls had complained that they didn't like their name.Their name comes from the story "The Brownies" by Juliana Horatia Ewing, written in 1870. In the story two children,Tommy and Betty, learn that children can be helpful Brownies or lazy boggarts.

Other than re homing strays and other cats and kittens from their re homing centre in Wrexham, the Cat Protection help with problems too. Simon, as you can see is a perfectly friendly and normal little cat. However, he turned up as a stray and started making a nuisance of himself terrorising the local pet cats. Just defending a territory he thought was his, he started to fight and bully the other cats out of the area, and caused quite a bit of damage and some hefty vet bills for the owners of the other local cat. The cat protection helped catch him and neuter him to try and calm him down and covered the cost of this. In the end they also took him into their rehoming shelter to find him a nice home of his own. The local pets were pleased! I'm sure Simon has gone to a lovely new home by now where there are no other cats to compete with, but if you would like to support the charitable work they do by volunteering or make a donation you can get in touch on 01978 313574. Or if you would like to give a home to cat in need, you
can wander round the shelter and meet the cats every day apart from Thursday between 11am and 3pm. All cats are given vet health checks, are fully vaccinated, neutered, micro chipped, flead and wormed before they come to you and a donation is required to contribute to the costs of this.

Summer’s coming, make the most of it! Welcome for new members and learners Why not try a new outdoor leisure activity this summer? Croquet is an interesting and enjoyable game which, with its handicapping system, can be played on equal terms by men and women of all ages and abilities. Perhaps you have played garden croquet with family or friends and would like to learn more about the game. Perhaps you have hung up your boots or trainers after playing a more strenuous sport and would like to switch to a game that involves challenge and skill but does not require the strength and stamina of more energetic activities. Perhaps the children have left home and you find you have more time. Perhaps you have just retired or moved to the area and would like to try something new. Or perhaps you would just like to escape from the phone or computer or kitchen or daily round of work and enjoy a stimulating game in the fresh air? Why not try your hand at croquet? Chester Croquet Club meets in Westminster Park off Hough Green in
Chester. It is a friendly and successful club with about a hundred members and is always pleased to welcome new members of all standards from absolute beginners to more experienced players. There will be an initial taster session at 6.30 to 8.30 pm on Tuesday, 29 April, for which there is no charge. This will be followed by a comprehensive beginners' course at the same time on Tuesday evenings for five weeks from 6 May to 3 June 2014. The fee is £30 but is free for new members joining the club at a subscription of £52 for the full season. Coaching is also available for people who have played before and would like to improve their skills. No previous knowledge of the game is needed and all equipment will be provided by the club. The only requirement is that players must wear flat-soled shoes. If you would like to enroll or would like more information, please contact the club secretary, John Dawson, at 01244 675929 or johngdawson@onetel.com . ever thought how we get to you? Horizontal ones, vertical ones, some highly polished brass, high ones, low ones, some stand on posts rooted in the grass...... Have you ever noticed how many different types of letter boxes there are?! Helping to deliver Essentiallyours in the rains and winds, some of you spotted the mad woman drenched to her skin, rucksack on chest. There are so many varying types of letter boxes, so much so I thought I must share the experience! Those which have an outer and inner flap and catch the end of your cold fingertips, those which are narrow and require your copy to be bent in half. Others are easily pushed open single handed yet there are some which require a two hand approach. Then of course there are those which on the gate warn of 'the dog' and I wondered
just how close it might be to the said letter box?! My favourite are the walled mounted or free standing boxes, often with little decorative emblems and either a lid or loose to push flap. Also the quirky hand made with little wooden front door to open, cute. Ah, and the terracotta pot with lid, not so much a letter box though. Not forgetting those discreet behind grand gates, and a couple of posh ones with both a letter box and cylinder attached for papers. So, next time you pick up your post from the floor, give a thought to that little hole in the door! Sharon Newton
