THE FIRST PROJECT OF THE GRESFORD VILLAGE CENTRE IMROVEMENT PLAN WILL SOON BE UNDERWAY! As part of the Village Improvement scheme for the centre of Gresford, the steering group incorporated the renovation of theVictorian drinking fountain and in Novemberwe applied for a grant to do this work from Northern Marches Cymru. We are pleased to inform you that we have been successful in this application and together with a generous contribution from Gresford Community Council we are able to commission a contractor for the project. The fountain will be cleaned, tiles repaired and the overall improvement to this corner site will start as soon as possible. It is not as large a scheme as we had first hoped because of the difficulties faced by having a whole lacework of utility services in the ground adjacent to the drinking fountain. We couldn’t risk disrupting the electric supply to half of Gresford! You wouldn’t have been happy! Where is this drinking fountain you may ask? Well it is at the junction of Old Wrexham Road , Chester road and Vicarage lane. In 1860, poor people who lived in Gresfordhad to draw water from a dirty pond now known as the Lake and from a well in the valley of the River Alyn and trudged with that water back to where they lived. However, a lady called Miss Anne Townshend,of the wealthy Trevalyn family andwho lived in ‘Westwood’ in Vicarage Lane, decided that she would do

something about this state of affairs. She and a small group of like-minded people instigated the construction of a Hydraulic Ram which supplied water to four taps in the village. The installation of the drinking fountain, entirely due to the initiative and fund-raising of Miss Townshend, followed in 1862.She raised by public subscription the sum of £330 and 10shillings for this purpose. That must have been a wonderful benefit to the people of the village, who were given keys to their nearest tap. More of the history will be publicised as part of the renovation project, which will be completed by June this year. We are still working hard at implementing the master plan for the centre of the village and looking for funding for smaller areas that we can do whilst conforming to the overall plan that you all voted for. We do need major funding to improve the village centre but the economic situation is not favourable at the moment. Nevertheless, we have always had the policy of “Be Prepared “and we are. Tales of France... Bonjour! Firstly, I hope you enjoyed ‘Tales of France’ in your January Essentiallyours. More recently I have been spending time in North Wales and many places remind me of France, one in particular being Darland, with converted and not so converted barns, beautiful countryside and farmhouses dotting the landscape. The solid oak and fine renovation of Darland Barn being a vision of hope for me! Eleven years on and I still have so much to do, it is a lifetime project.

with Sharon Newton properties didn’t present much better options, nor the handful after those too. Every one was in need of serious TLC and a very hefty contingency budget! Returning to the airport, my ideal dream slipping away, there was a property which the agent hadn’t originally mentioned as she wasn’t sure how I would feel about a place which had sold but sadly the purchaser had been killed at work. He was a Pompier (fireman). Being a big believer in fate and allowing the universe to take its course I arranged a last minute viewing. Turning the corner into Merly, an idyllic hamlet close to the town of Rochechouart, my knees went, heart raced and I simply knew before even stepping out of the car that I had found my dream French home! I filled up with tears as I excitedly spurted to the agent, “I want it”. She thought I was mad.

Alors! Picking up from where I left off; my flight booked I picked up my hire car at Bellegarde, the regional airport just on the outskirts of Limoges and headed for my first viewing. I did remember to stay on the right! I will never forget the mix of feelings, excitement, apprehension, scepticism, hope…could one truly buy a property in France for around 20,000 EURO? A few weeks later there I sat in the Notaires On approach to the first property I had office, hardly able to understand a word (not prearranged to view via French Property Shop, at that time being a French speaker) and as I was pleasantly surprised; detached stone I was handed the pen to sign I looked into cottage, roof looked ‘okay’, large garden, cute, the sky and said to myself, “I’m going to do all looked as it had been described on the it Dad, it just feels right”. You will recall my details. Over waddled the cutest of couples, father had loved France and we spent many a both four feet tall if an inch with 5 teeth holiday there. Sadly Dad passed away in 2000 between them. Monsieur proudly opened the so maybe part of him was sharing my dream door and stepped aside. Ah! That explained the too. He always said to grab life and follow your price! A perfect ‘V’ greeted me; the interior dreams. had totally collapsed and all its contents Old rusty key in hand, I opened the front door stacked as they had fallen. A little despondent which led straight into the kitchen….What if not entirely surprised the next handful of had I taken on?! 8

Mediterranean (front) & Black-headed Gulls Magpie © Hugh Linn

Last month two unusual gulls appeared locally. On 10th January a Mediterranean Gull was discovered feeding with around 400 Common and Black-headed Gulls on a flooded field between Holt Road and Gamford Lane with a different individual putting in a brief appearance on Gresford Flash a few days earlier. Mediterranean Gulls are comparatively recent colonists in the British Isles. The first Welsh breeding record was of a pair which reared two young on Anglesey’s Cemlyn nature reserve in 2010. Superficially similar to Black-headed Gulls (which actually have chocolate coloured heads) adult Mediterranean Gulls have black heads in summer and are also distinguished by their white flight feathers. The other unusual gull was an elusive Iceland Gull (which actually breeds in Greenland) spotted briefly on Gresford Flash. This was a first winter bird. The larger gulls take four years to attain full adult plumage and therefore can be confidently aged as they develop. Fully mature Iceland Gulls are strikingly white with pale grey mantles. Our bird, a first-winter juvenile, was a pale sandy colour. In addition to the

10

resident Mallards Gresford Flash has recently held a good selection of ducks - Goosander, Goldeneye, Pochard, Teal, Tufted and as many as 24 Shovelers. Once into the New Year there have been more records of Blackcaps visiting garden feeders. The majority of these birds would seem to be males, however, as females and juveniles in winter have brown heads and are not obviously black capped they can easily be overlooked. Members of the crow family are saddled with sinister associations if collective nouns are anything to go by - for example “A murder of crows” or “An unkindness of ravens”. “Tidings of magpies”, not quite so unpleasant though still rather unsettling, may be associated with the popular rhyme which credits them with prophetic powers - “One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl and four for a boy…..” but, like other maligned members of the family these birds are intelligent and resourceful. One of our resident Magpies has worked out that stale crusts are improved by dunking in the birdbath.

Footpath Chester Road. I have received a number of complaints about the condition of the footpath and roadway between Gun Street and the Williams Way footpath, across the front of the Butchers Arms. Highways have investigated and advise me that the land and footpaths are privately owned and the Council has no power to repair the surfaces. Prescriptions. I have been asked about the change in the rules with regard to prescriptions being available from the local surgery in Station Road. The NHS have introduced a very strict rule that GP surgeries cannot dispense any prescription for a resident who lives beyond a 1.5 mile radius of the surgery. Unfortunately the rules use a straight line and don’t take account of walking or driving distances. Darland Lane Flooding. The Council and I received a number of strong objections to the proposals to demolish 10 Horse Chestnut trees in order to facilitate the new drainage scheme to alleviate the flooding. I personally registered an objection on the grounds that I felt 10 was excessive. I have received a long and detailed report from the Arboriculture Officer to the following effect. The route was designed by independent

consultants to minimise the environmental and arboriculture impact. All 10 trees are infected with the rapidly spreading Horse Chestnut Canker, one would have to be demolished due to this in any case. The remaining 9 trees have limited life due to the disease. The report stated that there are too many Horse Chestnuts currently in the copse and there is a need to remove a number and replace them with types such as Oak. A number of people expressed concerns about the environmental impact of draining road surface water into the lake. The lake was the original point to which the road surface water drained and I am informed that this is normal practice and that there is no negative impact on the flora and fauna as a consequence. In fact surface water already drains into the lake. Environmental Audit. This takes place twice a year, I meet with the PCSO and Street Scene supervisor to identify any issues that might contribute to anti social behaviour. There is also a small sum of money available for environmental improvement schemes. As always I can be contacted at Hugh.Jones@wrexham.gov.uk or on 07769706999 May we all have a healthy and peaceful New Year.

A newly formed committee overseen by The Gresford Trust is looking to expand its membership with the aim of organising a Village Festival to take place on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August 2014. The purpose of the festival is to commemorate three separate and unique areas of remembrance. We wish to celebrate the 65 years since the formation of Gresford Trust . We would like to show our respect to the 266 men and boys who perished in the Gresford Colliery disaster exactly 80 years ago and, of course, we wish to recognise that this year will mark 100 years since the start of the First World War For the event to achieve its objectives and to be successful the current team is convening a meeting later this month and looking to recruit members onto the main organising committee and various sub-committees. In particular, we would like to recruit active support from all of the member organisations of the Trust, also from the many interest groups, schools, playgroups etc. and the support of the local shops, businesses and pubs. We are already making steady progress, with the cricket club hosting a charity fun cricket match and they have also agreed to oversee the bar. The football club is organising a series of competitions and taking charge of the BBQ. In addition to commemorating the historic events the Festival will provide a great opportunity for each of the groups involved to raise funds for their own organisation. The more help the better - as we are hoping to arrange donkey rides, have static displays, a tombola and, who knows? – if there is sufficient interest - we may even be able to arrange an “Our Village has got Talent” competition !! Please register your level of interest via email to contact@gresfordtrust.org or, if you would like more information, please call Emlyn on 01978 854360 or Phil on 07525-824-679. AS IT SAYS IN OUR GRAPHIC – WE WANT THE MAXIMUM SUPPORT FROM OUR VILLAGE FOLK TO MAKE THIS EVENT A MASSIVE SUCCESS

DEWI – WONDER OF WALES!

Wales is unique in the British Isles in so far as she has a patron saint who was born, died, and lived most of his life in Wales. Historians argue over the dates of St. David’s life: few, if any, records survived the Viking raids on South West Wales in the 9th and 10th centuries. But, most will date his birth at around A.D. 500, and his death at A.D. 589. David, known among Welshmen as Dewi, was contemporary to Deiniol, Dyfrig, Teilo, and other Welsh saints, who built Christianity in Wales and helped to provide a much-needed common Welsh identity to resist the westward march of Saxon invaders. Indeed, the Welsh tradition of wearing leeks is said to stem from St. David advising Welsh soldiers to wear them in order to distinguish themselves from the Saxons during battle. The adoption of Dewi as Patron Saint has much to do with a widelyheld determination to uphold the independence of Welsh Christianity from that which came to Anglo-Saxon England under St. Augustine of Canterbury. Lives written about the Welsh saints speak of Dewi being given his archepiscopal staff by Patriarch John III of Jerusalem when he went there on pilgrimage. Many commentators have seen this as a recognition of a distinct Welsh church and nation within the British Isles. Dewi is thought to have been born in Cardiganshire, the son of a tribal chief, and educated under St. Illtud at Llanylltud Fawr. He established 12 monasteries in South Wales and South-West England, all 16

adopting a strict rule of vegetarianism, and drinking only water. He was an engaging preacher whose ministry took him to Brittany, Cornwall, and Devon, as well as over much of Wales. He founded fifty churches, most of them in South-West Wales, the best-known being the Abbey Cathedral Church in the city that bears his name. Though a national figure and nationbuilder, St. David has always been regarded with a certain homeliness, as expressed by the poet, Gwenallt:“….He brought the Church into our homes, Put the holy vessels on the kitchen table With bread from the pantry and wine from the cellar, And he stood behind the table like a tramp So as not to hide us from the wonder of the sacrifice.” from Gwenallt “Eples” (Gomer Press 1951)

The Fiat 600 was a larger four seat model, but then they stretched it even more to produce the Fiat Multipla, with a four cylinder 767c.c. rear engine. A friend of mine owned such a car for years, which could reach 68 m.p.h. and return 48 m.p.g., but not with his wife, three children, the dog and the luggage aboard, with only 29 b.h.p. at their disposal! Then came the stylish new Fiat 500 of today, probably the best small car the company have ever made, with its high build quality and charm. 20

However, in the U.K., the Mini has followed the stretching trend since Alec Issigonis introduced his ingenious small passenger car in 1959. Its transverse front engine with the gearbox underneath in the ‘sump’ so to speak, allowed an amazing amount of passenger room, a layout which set the trend for car production to this day. Tiny wheels and Alex Moulton’s brilliantly simple independent rubber suspension completed the package, but if you look at the size of that original Mini compared with the B.M.W. Mini of today, you will realise how small it really was! Then the ‘stretchers’ took over, and if you look at the bulk of the four wheel drive Mini Countryman of today- you will see what I mean! So, the designers will continue to produce these cuddly and economical little charmersbut, just like children, they soon grow up! TERRY DAVIES.

West Highland Ramblings

A Diary of Douglas the Westie

Rain, rain, rain, I have decided to emigrate and join the many retired and renowned authors who reside in the South of France. There is just one problem, Himself will not fund me and as he has sole power of attorney over my bank account I appear to be somewhat stranded. I contacted a website called West Highland Rescue in the hope that they could save me, however they said that being dragged out for a walk in the rain did not constitute cruelty. I pointed out to them that it was indeed both cruel and degrading that a gent of my breeding should be forced to march, at the end of a piece of cord in downpour after downpour on dark mornings. They replied, that as a West Highland Terrier I should be more than capable of coping with such extremes of weather. Owners can be so insensitive to the needs of their animals, my friend Jimmy has just been brought back from his home in Cyprus to live in the Lake District, we were talking on the dog and bone and he was telling me that he loves being with his owner but can’t stand the weather. You will note that I referred to Jimmy as 22

having an owner, of course gentlemen of refinement such as myself do not have owners, we have carers. I have pointed this out to Himself, sometimes I feel he is a bit too big for his boots, so I am forced to raise my leg as a sign of disgust. I am very fortunate, I have band of carers, Monday is Auntie Joan day, don’t tell Himself, but she does give me the forbidden treatie. Tuesday and Wednesday Auntie Janet pops in and we pop out together and then from time to time I spend the day with Striker which is always great fun. All this talk of weather has made me think about summer holidays, I am told that we are off to Pandy for Easter, so I decided to do some research. Pandy is the Welsh word for a Fulling Mill, apparently fulling was the process in cloth making where they used human wee to make the cloths thicker. The mind boggles, and as for going there on holiday I am not at all sure. I must admit to having dreams of far more exotic places. Now that I am of retirement age I feel I should be treated to a cruise. Himself mentioned that you can now cruise around the Western Isles from Liverpool, I said it would be the Caribbean Islands or nothing. I am not into coals to Newcastle. Well I must get my brochures out and put my feet and make plans. Cheers, Douglas.

gardening Spread mulch this month before plants get too large. Use a thick layer of compost, pulverised bark or similar material over borders and between trees, shrubs, roses and fruit. This can be applied up to 5cm to 7.5cm (2in to 3in) thick, if you have sufficient material. Newly emerging perennials should grow up through it. Take care not to cover dwarf bulbs, such as winter aconites, now in flower. Covering soil with a large sheet of clear polythene, held down with lengths of wood or bricks, will help keep heavy rain off so the soil remains dry and workable. Simply roll back the sheet to continue digging when you get time, replacing the polythene afterwards. This is particularly useful for heavy or clay soils. Also use polythene to warm the soil for early sowings. A single layer left in place for a couple of weeks can raise the soil temperature by a few degrees. This will help to encourage rapid germination and establishment. Even if you don’t get time to start the winter digging, try and cover areas to be dug with a layer of compost or manure. This will be worked in by worms over time, or it can be lightly forked in to the surface in spring to prepare the soil for planting. Knock snow from trees and shrubs to prevent its weight breaking branches. Keep

using floating pond heaters to prevent ice forming over the entire surface of ponds. Flower garden - Summer flowering clematis can be pruned back hard. These will make rapid new growth during spring to carry flowers later this year. Winter and spring bedding plants tend to flower in phases depending on temperature. Play your part by keeping pansies, primulas and other plants regularly deadheaded. Pick off faded blooms to keep plants looking tidy and prevent them setting seed, which can reduce flowering performance. This is also a good time to move shrubs or flowers to a new position if they have outgrown their site. In mild areas, clumps of perennials can be divided and healthy young outer portions replanted into freshly prepared soil. Early flowering bulbs come into their own this month. These include Dutch iris and alliums planted last autumn, but now is the time to plant up pots of anemones such as Anemone coronaria De Caen Group, or their double-flowered counterparts in the Saint Bridgid Group. Before planting, the dry tubers are best soaked for 24 hours to absorb water, during which time they will double in size. Plant in pots for an early display, or plant outside later in March or early April.

TO GIFT OR NOT TO GIFT?

Let’s get straight to the point. Why would you want to? Perhaps consider this. Would you rather give some of your wealth to your kids or grandkids or gift it to the Inland Revenue? Inheritance Tax (on top of the Income Tax you have paid) can present a real challenge to lots of our clients. Whether you are a little older or perhaps thinking about your parents position, it really is worth spending an hour to make sure you understand what you can gift (or receive) and what you can’t. A very brief overview would say the following, first under the heading of ‘exempt gifts’. These are all allowed without any liability; - gifts between husband and wife are all exempt as are gifts to charities. - each year from savings/capital we are each entitled to gift up to £3000 in total to anybody we wish. You are allowed to ‘catch up’ a year as well - so £6000 in one tax year is possible. - gifts from income. The rule here is - if you can afford it. You can gift ANOTHER £3000 by way of regular monthly gifts and this often gets overlooked. The opportunity here can make a real difference to helping with a mortgage, costs of education or perhaps even a pension contribution for a younger member of the family. Next we can consider the option to make larger gifts and initially there are perhaps two options. You can gift direct to the beneficiary or you could think about gifting to a Trust. Your choice will largely depend on how much

control you want to have in the future. There are Trusts which will allow you to change your beneficiaries which might be useful if circumstances unexpectedly change. Trusts are very useful if Inheritance Tax might one day be an issue. The current ‘allowance’ or Nil Rate Band for each of us is £325,000 and your estate can leave up to this limit without tax liability. There is a tax charge at the rate of 40% for anything over this limit. Again, spending a little time to fully understand the rules must make sense. The ‘Seven year Rule’ which is really useful if you can gift - and live another seven years - can help tackle the threat of Inheritance Tax which at the end of the day, is largely ‘voluntary’ except perhaps for the exceptionally wealthy. To explore how you can gift successfully to your family now (when the funds might be more useful?) and ensure your wealth or your parents wealth is not the target of an Inheritance Tax charge please do contact us to arrange a convenient meeting. Alternatively you may like to receive our complimentary guide to Inheritance Tax and Trusts which many of our clients have found to be useful. Please just call or email and we will forward these to you. Gifting to just help your loved ones or to tackle later life tax issues is mostly just about knowing the rules. We look forward to hearing from you.

essentialreminder Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent.Although it’s often called “Mother’s Day” it has no connection with the American festival of that name. Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and cards to their mothers. A BIT OF HISTORY Most Sundays in the year churchgoers in England worship at their nearest parish or “daughter church”. Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or “mother” church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their “mother” church, or the main church or Cathedral of the area. Inevitably the return to the “mother” church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away returned home. And most historians think that it was the return to the “Mother” church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family. As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift. Now you have no excuse, you know the history so pick up the phone, order something nice and enjoy the day. Mother’s Day 30th March 2014

essentially healthy Losing weight is a big worry for many people. Each year, yet another diet book, exercise plan or fat burning potion is added to the pile in the closet. None of these get-thinquick gimmicks seem to work, and in some cases, the fat returns in greater numbers than it left. The big question is: how to lose body fat, and how to keep from finding it again. All of these fat-busting plans are ignoring the basic truth of weight loss: you have to work hard, and carry on working hard, to loose inches and keep in shape. A quick loss plan does not cover you for the period after you complete the programme. If you have a six-week inch-loss plan, what happens on the seventh week? It won’t take too long for that fat to come back. A weight loss supplement that is supposed to burn body fat will probably waste your money, and will not help you. The most important factor in burning body fat is diet. No matter how many hours you put in at the gym, if you are still consuming more calories than you burn you will carry on gaining weight. Take a close look at your diet. An ideal weight-loss programme includes regular meals, and a fat-limitation diet. Cutting fat out of your diet completely, or skipping meals, could convince your body that you are starving, and this means it will try and store whatever fats come its way, exactly the opposite of what you wanted. A balanced diet combined with exercise is

the only way to burn fat and keep it off. If you find that you are having problems losing those last few pounds, then dropping carbs and increasing protein will probably provide you with the answer. Exercise is another important factor in weight loss. Burning body fat means getting the body to use stored fat as an energy source. The intensity of exercise, the length of time the exercise is performed for, and diet are the major factors in influencing the body to use fats instead of glucose for fuel. You should focus on increasing your physical activity rather than drastically reducing the amount of food you eat. Losing more than one kilo a week implies that you are losing muscle rather than fat. The most suitable kind of fat burning exercise is aerobic. A low to moderate exercise of this kind will burn fat, whereas the higher intensity exercise will just burn glucose. Any exercise will burn more stored carbohydrates at the beginning, and it usually takes between 20-30 minutes for any fat to be burned at all. Of course, the greater the intensity of exercise, the more calories are burned, but for many people, a lower intensity of exertion is the most practical. Regular aerobic training should be complemented with some weight training. Many people are intimidated by this, especially as it is possible to gain weight when you begin.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD

Young People’s activity in Gresford Following the closure of the youth club and the associated changes to that service, my surgery on the matter established that the new arrangements are taking time to bed down to say the least. Along with colleagues in the village I have held meetings with youth service officers and we are planning around Easter time to hold an information “Open Day” about services for young people in our area. If you are involved in such services, or indeed if you are a potential user, please get in contact. Darland High School The recent Estyn inspection report for Darland was published on Christmas Eve. We as governors as well as staff recognise that there is still work to do, actions to take and progress to continue. As vice-chair of governors I was involved in meeting parents and also with meeting education officers of the council. Both meetings recognised good aspects of the report but also work to be done. Governors will act as “critical friends” in helping formulate the Post Inspection Action Plan (PIAP) and will strive to ensure Darland makes the progress we know it can. Traffic Measures I have had a number of complaints about vehicles not giving way on High Street in the village and actually mounting the pavements to pass each other. As this often seems to happen at either ends of a school day I have alerted our PCSOs as it constitutes an offence. I have also approached the head teacher and we should shortly have a meeting between school, police and highways officers to look at potential solutions. I would ask drivers to be more considerate and ask themselves “if that was my child or grandchild how would I feel.” 34

Summer’s coming, make the most of it! Welcome for new members and learners Why not try a new outdoor leisure activity this summer? Croquet is an interesting and enjoyable game which, with its handicapping system, can be played on equal terms by men and women of all ages and abilities. Perhaps you have played garden croquet with family or friends and would like to learn more about the game. Perhaps you have hung up your boots or trainers after playing a more strenuous sport and would like to switch to a game that involves challenge and skill but does not require the strength and stamina of more energetic activities. Perhaps the children have left home and you find you have more time. Perhaps you have just retired or moved to the area and would like to try something new. Or perhaps you would just like to escape from the phone or computer or kitchen or daily round of work and enjoy a stimulating game in the fresh air? Why not try your hand at croquet? Chester Croquet Club meets in Westminster Park off Hough Green in

Chester. It is a friendly and successful club with about a hundred members and is always pleased to welcome new members of all standards from absolute beginners to more experienced players. There will be an initial taster session at 6.30 to 8.30 pm on Tuesday, 29 April, for which there is no charge. This will be followed by a comprehensive beginners' course at the same time on Tuesday evenings for five weeks from 6 May to 3 June 2014. The fee is £30 but is free for new members joining the club at a subscription of £52 for the full season. Coaching is also available for people who have played before and would like to improve their skills. No previous knowledge of the game is needed and all equipment will be provided by the club. The only requirement is that players must wear flat-soled shoes. If you would like to enroll or would like more information, please contact the club secretary, John Dawson, at 01244 675929 or johngdawson@onetel.com . Recipe of the month

Spicy meatballs

Serves 6. Ingredients: 500g minced chicken, turkey, lamb, beef or pork 1 medium onion 2 garlic cloves, crushed or chopped 2 tsp mild or medium curry powder 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp garam masala ½ tsp paprika or cayenne pepper 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped 1 egg, beaten 50g fresh breadcrumbs 1 tbsp olive oil

Divide the meat mixture into 15-18 evensized pieces and shape into balls (they should be about the size of a walnut). Heat the oil in the frying pan over a medium heat and add the meatballs using a spoon. Cook them for 5 mins, turning until golden brown. Remove from the pan and place them on to the tray. Bake in the oven for 15-20 mins. Remove from the oven. Remember to use oven gloves! Allow to cool slightly and serve with a fresh, crisp green salad, some pitta bread and tomato salsa.

How it’s done: Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Put the mince into the mixing bowl. Add the onions, garlic, curry powder, cumin, garam masala, paprika or cayenne pepper and coriander, then mix well. By adding these spices, you’ll get a delicious flavour without having to add any salt. Add the beaten egg and breadcrumbs, then mix again.

We have the most amazing selection of local, quality meat at the farm shop. We also have a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and bedding plants! Shop local. You know it makes sense.

Roads It was worth putting up with delays on Marford Hill, as we now have a much improved surface near the bottom, where the surface was breaking up. I hope this will reduce the noise and vibrations which have plagued the residents in the houses worst affected, many of which are below the level of the road. Wrexham receives £10.594 million Welsh Government regeneration grant

Wrexham is set for a regeneration boost after securing a multi-million pound investment from the Welsh Government. The Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Carl Sargeant has today announced the allocation of funding for the Welsh Government’s regeneration grant, Vibrant and Viable Places. The total funding has been extended to £100 million over three years, with Wrexham receiving £10.594 million over three years. The funding will be used for various regeneration projects - helping to create jobs, tackle poverty, increase housing supply and improve community facilities. Some of the money has already been earmarked for affordable housing, with 326 units set to be built. The funding is also set to create jobs in the construction industry, help people get back into work and create learning opportunities for the people of Wrexham. The estimated worth of the project is expected to within the region of £27 million, with match funding coming from other sectors. Cllr Neil Rogers, Leader of Wrexham Council said: “This is a big win for the whole of Wrexham. “A lot of hard work has gone in to this bid and I’m thrilled that the town has been able to secure 90% of the money that we originally bid for. “This money will be spent wisely on a number of innovative regeneration activities which will bring much needed jobs, training and new and improved housing to the town centre and

adjoining Communities First areas of Caia Park and Hightown” “One of the main aims of our Council Plan is to ensure Wrexham and its people are supported to fulfil their potential and prosper and this multi-million pound investment will help us realise this ambition.” The Minister said: “Despite the cuts imposed on us by the UK Government, this substantial funding is further evidence of how the Welsh Government is committed to supporting the people of Wales. “These worthy projects will make a real difference to their communities and I’m delighted with the quality of the bids received. “Many of the successful bids focus on the regeneration of town centres, which is about a lot more than filling empty shops. It is about creating a diverse and vibrant town centre with other services such as leisure, health and education at its heart and making the town centre an attractive place to live. “Increasing housing supply is my number one priority and I hope that these successful bids will build on and compliment the excellent regeneration work in evidence across Wales through our Houses into Homes and Social Housing Grant schemes.” The local authorities who will receive funding through Vibrant and Viable Places are Bridgend, Conwy, Flintshire, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen and Wrexham.

Maes-y-Pant - we’re getting there! In 2006, Groundwork consulted local people about what changes they wanted if the old McAlpine’s quarry were to be made into avillage amenity. It was and the good news is we’ve finished most of the planned work, at what is now Maes-y-Pant, based on that consultation. The final part will be to install a footpath at the front of the site and improve the entrance to the car park. We cannow focus on maintenance and there is a group of volunteers that help with this. Dates in February include 12th, 16th& 26th. Other dates are on our Notice Board and on our website- www.maes-y-pant.com. Up to now, we’ve taken the work forward by creating a number of projects to obtain the required grants, but we can’t do this for routine tasks and costs. This is why we’ve written to every householder in Gresford and Marford recently to ask for help by becoming a ‘Friend of Maes-y-Pant’. A £10 donation from 250 people will keep us afloat. We are not asking for something for nothing. You can see the work we have done already which we think adds to the attraction of the village. We’ve also included a leaflet with our letter. This is for you to keep and help you understand what we’re about – and to stop people getting lost! Yes

that is still happening. If you become a ‘Friend’ we will keep you informed of events. You will also be able to influence the direction you want us to go. We have a public meeting at 7:30pm on 1st April in the Marford Community Centreto start the process. All are welcome, even if you haven’t joined as a Friend. Future meetings, which we want to hold annually, will be restricted to Friends however. All Saints Church is organising a coffee morning with raffle at 10 am on Saturday 15 February at Church House, all proceeds to Maes-y-Pant.Many of the MyPAG members will be there. Although maintenance is a priority, MyPAG is still very proactive. Firstly, a big thankyou to all those who voted for us in the Lloyds Community Award; we were successful in gaining one of the 2 top awards locally and are now planning for a pond and wetland area in the centre of the site. Ironically we have to wait until summer for the area to dry out before we can go ahead. Secondly we are hopeful of obtaining grants to install wooden exercise equipment. It confirms our desire to make the site attractive to as many local people as possible.

freerange “ think again before buying ‘cheap’ chicken ” Do you know about the life your fresh supermarket chickens led before they reached the table? Few people know about the conditions suffered by most broiler chickens - those reared for meat. 95% of the chicken eaten in the UK has been intensively farmed. Farmers are under pressure to produce poultry as quickly and cheaply as possible, which means birds live short lives, in cramped conditions, without ever seeing natural daylight. More than 850 million broiler chickens are slaughtered every year in the UK. And of these hundreds of millions of chickens, most of them, more than 95% are reared inside, produced in industrial conditions in vast, enclosed sheds. Their lives are pitiful - but at least they’re short! Standard chickens are grown from newly hatched chick to oven-ready bird in an astonishing 39 days. Poultry scientists have bred chickens which grow fast. As they grow, their living space smaller than an A4 piece of paper for each bird – gets more and more cramped as they near the end of their short lives. With around 17 birds packed into each square metre they have barely enough space to walk, preen themselves, stretch their wings or even turn around. A typical chicken shed holds 40,000 birds. They never set foot outside or see natural light. They feed around the clock - with as little as one hour of darkness for every 24 hour period. 54

It’s not nice - but it’s certainly cheap. The natural way for a chicken to live is outdoors, with grass under its feet, and the sun on its back. Outdoor access is fundamental to the free range system of poultry production. The birds are still commercially produced, farmed in large numbers and destined for the oven, but they have more space and lead more natural, longer lives, a minimum of 56 days instead of 39. And when they choose to go inside, they have more space, and an enriched environment: straw bales to perch and jump on, even footballs to play with. This is good, because chickens are sociable, curious creatures. They like to range, they love to roost in shaded areas and they have a keen sense of hierarchy - their place in the pecking order. Free range birds do cost more to produce; so they will cost you more. In the supermarkets you’ll pay £5+ for a whole bird. Which isn’t much for a family meal. Is it worth the extra? It’s down to you.You can boycott cheap chicken. You can demand better welfare standards from your supermarket. Or you could make a pledge to always buy a free range bird for the family roast. The next time you do buy a chicken, think about how it has been reared. And remember that your choice will help to determine the future of British chicken farming.
