your life, your home, your community. Have we got all got Olympic fever after that fantastic opening ceremony? I thought it was a mixture of a thoughtful, fun and educational event, which suited all ages and cultures. I was expecting more pure entertainment so I was pleasantly surprised to see our history celebrated across the years, and I learned a few things from it as it unveiled over the evening. I was shocked someone described it as ‘lefty, political rubbish’ or words to that effect. But yes, I’ve definitely caught the Olympic bug and been watching as much as I can. In particular I really got into the women’s cycling on Sunday, and am astounded at how young all our athletes are. To my knowledge we have no locals competing, but please let me know if I am mistaken about this as it would be great to hear about them. Mind you we did have an overseas Olympic team staying and training locally, which was mentioned on Friday night as the teams came out during the opening ceremony, which was great to hear. And whilst we’re talking about exceptional people, let’s not forget the unsung local heroes that do a lot of work in the community for no recognition, that we would love to give gold medals too. This month is no exception as we have 2 local guys cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End for charity very soon, so please support them if you can; you can read all about that further on in the magazine.

Well done to those involved with the Worthenbury Blues and Roots festival. It was a major achievement to have gone ahead with the event at all, after the 5 consecutive wet months we’ve had. They still managed to have a great day! This wet weather certainly has a lot to answer for! A lot of rain and little sun has affected farming produce, such as the veggies we take for granted, and financially this area of farming has suffered a great deal this year. Being a rural area we have local farms that will have been affected, and other areas have been affected too such as garden centres. The weather has hardly inspired us to go mad outside this year has it? Traditionally we have more DIY work done in the Spring and Summer as we wait for warmer dryer weather to cope with the inconvenience of big jobs we need to get done such as painting, building work etc, and I guess that’s taken a hit too. We are already living in a difficult economic climate and this weather has been a further kick in the teeth for some industries. Mind you on the opposite side of the coin there are some industries which have benefited too. I suppose that’s life!
All the best, Jill

Investing in Normally we associate Hadlow Edwards with helping others with their wealth management, but more recently they have been investing in themselves for a change. They've been a Wrexham business for many years and have their office across from the Royal Mail sorting office on Regent Street in Wrexham. Over the 10 years they have been established they have grown considerably in size, so when the opportunity to buy the premises next door became available, they took it. In the early days when they started there was just the 2 of them, Warren Hadlow and Medwyn Edwards, both local guys from Holt and Wrexham. Now there are 15 of them working as a team offering wealth management advice covering a wide range of investments, pensions and insurance. They need the new space to house the team and to deal with all of the enquiries they get privately and professionally, and to deliver their specialist advice. If you need advice about money they are confident they can help. They had their official launch of their new office last week and quite rightly too had an open day and invited local businesses and clients to come 6
growth and see their new look. Part of the national St. James’s Place Group David Bellamy their Chief Executive came to say a few words to mark the occasion, and to visit one of the top performing Practices. He looked pleased to be able to do so. As smart as the new offices are with a lovely reception area to greet you, Warren, Medwyn and the team are still happy to come and see you at your home or office. We congratulate them on their success and would like to say how much they deserve it, and we have no doubt that the future will just be as successful for them.

Wrexham's new industrial estate access road was officially opened today by Carl Sargeant, AM, Minister with responsibility for Transport. During the opening ceremony the Minister cut a banner over one of the newly constructed bridges on the road and unveiled a plaque that will be set in slate at the Northern Access of the road. The road was then opened to a cavalcade of over 60 vehicles associated with the Industrial Estate who made their way over the bridge and into the Estate. The £30.3 million road provides new and improved north and south access to the Estate, one of the largest in Europe, and has been entirely funded by the Welsh Government. Wrexham Council appointed Birse Civils to undertake the construction work and their successful partnership has seen the road finished on time and on budget. The Minister said: “This is a project that exemplifies the Welsh Government working closely with the local authority to deliver local priorities on time and within budget.” “With improved links the Industrial Estate will provide a welcome boost to the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents near the industrial estate by taking heavy traffic away from their homes.” “This new access road reflects our commitment to further improving the transport infrastructure across Wales and will play a key part in improving
10
the competitiveness of businesses located on the Estate.” Cllr Ian Roberts, Mayor of Wrexham, said: "This is a historic day for Wrexham Industrial Estate, its businesses and workers, who have all waited so patiently for this opening. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Welsh Government for their commitment to the area in ensuring the money was made available for this essential link to the Estate." Paul Bird, Commercial Director, Birse Civils North said: “We are delighted to deliver this project ahead of schedule. The team worked tirelessly to deliver the project with minimal disruption to the local community and the roads they leave behind will no doubt be of great benefit to Wrexham and the wider community.” The road brings with it fantastic new opportunities for investment in Wrexham which has easy road access to the North West and is within a two hour drive of one third of the Uk's population and half of its manufacturing industry. The need for this vital link was identified as far back as the 1970's and funding became available from the Welsh Government in the 1990's. Since that time extensive consultation, preparation and a public enquiry have been undertaken to bring the road to its opening today.

Education, Education, Education Funding school fees or perhaps university fees is one of the biggest financial commitments a family can make. Parents and Grandparents continue to recognise the value that independent education can offer – but it isn’t getting any cheaper. According to a recent survey the cost of sending a child to private school in England or Wales is rising annually by around 4% (source: Independent schools council January 2012) Generally, families looking to fund school fees fall into three categories – those who want to invest a lump sum, those who would like to spread the cost of fees or parents wanting to set up a regular savings scheme to provide funds to cover future fees. There are several schemes available to help make school fees more affordable and an experienced wealth manager can draw up a bespoke investment plan that can be both tax efficient and flexible. For example, you could consider using your annual tax-free ISA allowance. By investing the maximum amount permitted in an ISA* and selecting funds run by full-time professional investment managers, a tidy sum could be accumulated in the space of ten years. For grandparents, trust planning can be a useful tool if they wish to make provision for school fees and achieve Inheritance
Tax (IHT) benefits at the same time. If they make regular payments from their income without reducing their lifestyle, then these gifts are not counted as part of their estate for inheritance tax purposes. Another option is to give a lump sum for their grandchildren’s education and provided they survive for a further seven years, the gift is free of IHT. Grandparents might also want to consider other solutions, such as life assurance, to increase significantly the funds created for grandchildren. This can be very useful when there is more than one child you wish to provide for. With interest rates still at an all time low, and the country only slowly coming out of recession, it is important to make your investments work as hard for you as possible. The history of financial markets has shown consistently that a measured, long term view is always the best approach to investing. Today, it is more important than ever to be fully aware of all the solutions available so that you can make an informed choice for your personal wealth management. Please contact us if you would like more information on this topic. Early planning makes a lot of sense. *The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Goodwood ‘Marches’ On After watching the T.V programme about the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, it left me completely astonished at how it has grown into such an international success, with so many people travelling from the other side of the globe just to be there and soak up the very special atmosphere, the magnificent machinery, and mingle with the host of star drivers and motoring greats who regularly attend. Behind it all is Lord March, who took over the running of the estate from his father in 1993, and who has introduced the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival, and has seen the Rolls-Royce factory re-locate there in 2003. So, if you want to know a thing or two about estate management, take a few tips from him! Mind you, ever since the family bought the estate some 300 years ago, there’s always been something happening there- horse racing originally, but cricket, flying and motor racing have all brought in the visitors ( Stirling Moss had his near-fatal accident there in 1962), and what Lord March’s father, the Duke of Richmond, had achieved before him, his son has raised to new heights. All I can say is that the Festival of Speed is simply magic. All that wonderful machinery driven (or ridden) by such famous people. You can touch and feel these wonderful machines in the ‘pits’, or watch them racing up the hill in front of Goodwood House. Inevitably, the great John 16
by Terry Davies
Surtees and Stirling Moss will give you a wave from the vintage Mercedes or Auto Union cars they are demonstration driving, and the roar of the Red Arrows swooping overhead, leaving their red, white and blue smoke trails, sets the blood racing. Wife ,Pam, and I have always enjoyed the many times we have visited the event, she especially remembering how a polite gentleman opened the door for her at our hotel, who turned out to be former World Champion driver Emerson Fittipaldi! The Saturday night ball is also a big attraction, and it was while sitting at dinner with World Champion on two and four wheels, John Surtees and his wife, Jane, that he told us about all his racing trophies having been stolen. So sad, but three years ago, his 18 year old racing driver son, Henry, was killed in a Formula 2 accident ,and they were devastated. In the marquee at the back of Goodwood House there is usually some great entertainment, watched by a heaving mass of people. On stage, I thought I saw Damon Hill, capering around playing his guitar. “Look, Pam, there’s Damon Hill.” I shouted above the noise. “ Don’t be silly, it’s Chrissie Hynde.” she laughed. Sorry both- it was the jeans that fooled me! So, the Goodwood Festival of Speed ‘Marches’ on to even greater things in the future, but I simply MUST get to see the Goodwood Revival!

Firstly this month I would like to reiterate the importance of keeping your vehicles safe and secure. My colleague PCSO 2946 Stephen O’Connell mentioned this in an article in the July issue but we need residents to take this seriously on board. There were 3 vehicles taken in Marchwiel village alone, within days of each other. We are calling these Car Key Burglaries where the offenders are coming into villages and surrounding areas, trying doors, entering properties then stealing car keys. The stolen vehicles are then used to commit other offences. Sometimes the cars are found burnt out in other areas when they are of no further use to these thieves. Without causing too much alarm, can I suggest you try to be more vigilant by maybe keeping your front doors locked when you are busy or distracted for example, hanging washing out in the back garden, making the beds or having a shower etc. Just things that will help to make it more difficult for these offenders, who think they can just waltz into your home and take your property. If we all work together we can help to reduce this type of crime. North Wales Police are taking this very seriously and are working with other forces to try and apprehend those responsible. On another note whilst out and about around the village of Marchwiel recently, I have been very disappointed to see a vast amount of litter strewn around the apple seat area near the skate park. Could I ask anyone frequenting that area, which is usually the youths of the village, to make sure they use the litter bins provided 18
in this vicinity. Also could I ask parents to instil into their children how important it is to use the bins. Some of you may think it’s just a little bit of paper or a can that won’t make any difference. But, if everyone thinks like this it soon escalates making the area/village look so untidy and scruffy. I have spoken to the youths around this area and if anyone is seen to drop or leave any kind of litter anywhere in the village I will have no alternative but to issue tickets. It’s your village so it’s up to all of us, as a community, to do our bit to keep it clean and tidy. The council come around on a regular basis to tidy up after us, but it would be nice for everyone to take responsibility for their own actions and not just leave it to others. Thanks for your support. Lynne

The Challenge - 2 Riders, 8 Days, 903 Miles Land’s End to John O’Groats is the traversal length of the whole of Great Britain, between two extremities in the southwest and northeast. The traditional distance by road is 874 miles (1,407 km) and takes most cyclists ten to fourteen days; the record for running the route is nine days. Off-road walkers typically walk 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months for the expedition. Two much-photographed signposts indicate the traditional distance at each end. During the last week of August, two APPE employees, Hugh Valentine and Gary Foster, will take on the immense challenge of cycling this famous route. Their ultimate aim is to cycle 903 miles in8 days, and by doing so, raise a considerable amount of money for their chosen charities. Their challenge will start on 24th August 2012. The Riders - Gary Foster is 48 and a relative new-comer to the cycling world. He has embraced the sport and enjoys the “freedom” it brings, revelling in how he is no longer reliant on a car. Gary took the inspiring challenge to spur him on to change his lifestyle, to get fit and healthy. To date Gary has lost 3 stone training and anticipates a total loss of 4 stone by the end of the challenge! 22
Gary is riding for 2 charities. Loros, is a palliative care charity that helps and supports cancer patients. This charity is close to Gary’s family as it supported his mother-in-law through the final months of her short illness. His other chosen charity is The Boys Brigade, a Christian youth organisation for young boys which cares for and challenges young boys for life through a programme of informal education. Hugh Valentine, 25, is doing the challenge in memory of his sister who sadly passed away on 17th June 2011. He has a passion for exercise and fitness. Hugh aims to increase the difficulty and complexity of each annual challenge, and is already planning for next year! Hugh wants to help less-fortunate people and feels that completing the challenge in memory of his sister is a great way to keep her spirit alive. The charity Hugh has chosen is Young Minds, the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the emotional well being and mental health of children and young people.

The 8th Worthenbury Blues & Roots Festival – 30th June Following weeks of uncertain weather a decision was made to hold this year’s Worthenbury Blues & Roots Festival in a large marquee and it proved to be an excellent decision. Whilst overall numbers were down compared to previous years (probably due to the weather), those who attended were dry and comfortable and enjoyed eight acts from all over the blues genre, whilst also enjoying the excellent food and real ale that was served up by the village hall committee.
24
The musicians present were quite varied, from the larger-than-life acoustic duo Tom Attah and Frannie Eubanks to the outstanding mellow electric guitar of Steve Roux, from the Brass Knuckle Blues Band. Then there was the raw, humorous wit of Aussie Rory Ellis to the retro rocking rhythm and blues of headliners Big Boy Bloater and The Limits. Whatever the style, each act was warmly applauded and the general feedback was very positive. Indeed, one reviewer from the British Blues Press remarked that Worthenbury is now firmly established as the best UK one-day blues festival. With the proceeds earmarked for improvements to the village hall, the hard work and planning was worth the effort. A big "thank you" goes to all our sponsors and helpers and particularly to Essentially Yours magazine for their valuable help in promoting the event. Pete Evans Images © Ian Williams Photography

Got a bee in your bonnet about something? Let us know. email us: info@essentiallyours.co.uk
Dear Essentiallyours Just a quick line so that I can have my moan. I live on Nant Clwyd Park, Crosslanes and the state of the public grass is a disgrace. I have phoned the council a number of times but still it is NOT getting cut on a regular basis. I know the council are making cut backs on all this sort of work as you can see when you are driving around the local area, but my problem is that most villagers have somewhere other than their public grass to play, as here they do not. This is the only place that they can play and even if they were to cut it today, the grass is that long the children still could not play on it because there would be to much dead grass. The children here are having to play ball etc on the road now and that surely is not right, so Wrexham Council - please pull your finger out and cut our grass more often! D Davies

IMPORTANT NOTICE
We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine. However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery. We still publish them for those people that read the magazine straight away and do so in the hope that a few people will be able to support the event and attend at short notice. A few extra people at a charitable cause makes a huge difference!

Here are a few pointers to get you started in the garden this month. Flower garden - Ensure containerised plants especially evergreens never go short of water during the summer while they’re developing their flower buds for next spring’s display. A shortage of water now can lead to a case of bud drop next year for plants, such as camellias and rhododendrons. Pots that have dried out should be submerged in water and left to soak for a few hours, ideally in a bowl, bath or water-butt. Even if it rains, pots often remain dry as they stand in the rain shadow of a house and their foliage acts as an umbrella. Support the stems of tall perennials and lilies with bamboo canes and watch out for lily beetles and their larvae. Pick any off and destroy them immediately. Deadhead roses as the blooms fade, cutting off the flowers just above the uppermost leaf on the stem. Trim back lavender bushes after flowering to remove the old blooms and shoot tips. Take care not to cut back too heavily into any old wood. Removing faded flowers from perennials and annual plants will also ensure a continued display of blooms. 34
Holiday watering - There are several things you can do to help prevent plants drying out. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid. You can also install an automatic trickle watering system on an outside tap, which is controlled by a timer and will turn water on and off each day. Continue taking summer cuttings of fuchsias, pelargoniums and tender perennials. These root quickly at this time of year, forming sturdy young plants that will successfully overwinter on a bedroom windowsill. Many houseplants, including coleus and African violets, can also be propagated from cuttings now. Trim hedges, especially hedging conifers that can become tall and annoy neighbours. Pests - Watch out for ants nesting in patio pots, where they can disturb root growth and reduce a plant’s performance. Standing pots in a large saucer of water helps deter them from settling in. Vine weevil is a particular problem in greenhouses and patio pots. Now is a good time to treat compost with biological pest control nematodes, which search out and kill weevil larvae. They can also be applied to the soil around attacked plants.

covershot Y INSIGHT INTO YOUR MONTHL
A little reminder about our photo competition. Here is the chance to shine on the front cover of ‘essentiallyours’. I have decided to give myself a break! And hand over the creative frontage to you. It’s quite straight forward really, all I want you to do is come up with a front cover photograph for the September issue of Essentiallyours. That gives you plenty of time to get your act together to create a masterpiece fit to grace the front of 4000 magazines delivered in your area. Now, here come the technical bits and the very loose rules I have just made up, so concentrate! The photograph MUST be portrait format, not landscape! Which means, it must be long and thin, not short and fat. It must also be a recent, local photograph, as lovely as they are, I don’t want a shot of Big Ben or one of your wife on the beach at Bangor! For copyright purposes the image must be your own, please don’t be scanning in a Lord Lichfield from some magazine and passing it 36

off as your own, that would be very naughty and cheating ever so slightly! Digital format ONLY! The higher the resolution (minimum 300dpi please) the better. The competition is open to all - young and old, just be creative and original. For everyone to be in with the same chance, please only enter ONE image, multiple submissions will be withdrawn. Closing date is 31st August 2012. Please email your entries to me: carol@essentiallyours. co.uk Make sure you include your name, address, contact number and where the photo was taken. The decision of the editor is final, no correspondence will be entered into please don’t try to bribe us with lavish gifts, chocolate cake, silky underwear or Caribbean cruises, as it just won’t work... much! Get snapping - good luck - but most of all, enjoy it. I will look forward to receiving your entries. If in doubt about any of the technical bits, just email me!
Touch Rugby goes from strength to strength in Wrexham Touch Rugby’s growing popularity in Wrexham has seen it move to a bigger venue. Sessions, which are organised in by Wales Rugby League, will now take place at Queensway Sports Stadium over the summer months. Touch rugby is a fun, non-contact version of the sport that is suitable for everyone. The sport minimises the physical contact and is suitable for men and women of all ages. Touch Rugby takes place at Queensway Stadium every Monday between 7.15-9pm. Mark Glasson, Queensway Stadium Manager said: “Since the arrival of professional rugby league in the area we have seen a rise in popularity of rugby in general. We are delighted to work in partnership with the Wales Rugby League to get more people active and most importantly have fun. “The great thing is that players of all abilities have been showing up to play. There have been people from different sporting backgrounds as well as people who are just looking for a new way to keep fit.” By removing tackles and other contact elements of the sport, Touch Rugby is more about athleticism and exercise, encouraging players to be both agile and accurate in passing and catching. Cllr David Griffiths, Lead Member for Health said: “Touch rugby is fun sport and a great way to improve your fitness whilst also meeting new 38
people. It’s an easy game to pick up meaning you can get up to speed in no time. “It’s great to see so many people getting involved and staying active. The sessions have been very popular and I would encourage people of all abilities to come down to Queensway and give it a go.We are also planning some more touch rugby related events in the build up to the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.” If you are interested in taking part in come along to a session just turn up at Queensway. Each session costs £2.50.
