your life, your home, your community. Well I hope that’s the last of the snow. I sound such a killjoy don’t I? It’s an age thing, you can tell when you reach a certain age just by your attitude to snow and the fact that it is no longer welcomed or enjoyed. Mind you I had to get to Knutsford last Friday night and the motorway was not a pleasant experience in the snow. It was actually quite scary so I was fortunate enough to tuck in safely behind a police vehicle and follow in his tracks, which I thought was quite smart. I was so fixated in keeping within his tracks I didn’t realise he had ventured off the motorway. I ended up on my way to Whitchurch on a very snowy road and then couldn’t find anywhere that looked like a good turning point. Complete nightmare and a 3 hour journey! I can’t tell you how worn out I was by the time I got to my destination, but only myself to blame. Never mind if that’s the worst thing that happened to me in the snow, I shouldn’t grumble. Snow’s always more dicey in village areas but it’s something you accept to enjoy the greater benefits of your rural surroundings, being the relaxed village life, not living in a very built up area, having the benefit of less noise, generally nicer views and not forgetting the village community spirit and the more personal relationships you share. I hope I speak for you all with those comments, I’m not very subtle, so you can tell this is leading up to something. So I’m sure you’d be a bit

miffed if one of the larger supermarket chains decided to open one of its smaller retail stores in your village and spoil your village appeal. Not to mention the detrimental effect on your small local businesses, and the increased traffic this would attract. Don’t worry this isn’t happening here, well not that I know of, but it is happening in Marford. Would you believe on Marford hill there is a planning application being made for a retail convenience store of this very nature. Understandably the local businesses are not happy to say the least, as if this goes through their livelihood will be under threat. I think fleetingly the local residents may be forgiven for thinking it might just be handy for just one second, but after looking at the bigger picture and thinking of their local businesses, the shop itself spoiling the look of the village, the increased traffic, and the fact that these greedy organisations do not care about their communities just their profits I think we’d all soon come to our senses. It just made me think is nothing sacred in this world? Or is it just me, getting too sentimental in my old age, I sincerely hope not. Whinge over, and on a more positive note there was something on the news wondering whether a 4 day working week would be the way forward. Absolutely I say! Keep warm and have a lovely February.

All the best, Jill

The future of the motorcar So here we are at the beginning of another new year, wondering what it will mean for the U.K. motor industry- and the world! Strangely enough, even in these hard times, car production in the U.K. has been very healthy indeed, though it seems ironic that the Ford Fiesta and Focus top the sales charts, even though the company don’t build cars in the U.K. any more- plenty of engines though, at their Dagenham plant! Now it seems that the media pages are full of Jaguar/Land Rover news, whether it be taking an interest in Aston Martin shares or taking on 800 new workers, offset somewhat by Honda shedding an equal number of their’s at Swindon! Having introduced their brilliant new Range Rover, a stunning new F-Type sports car is set to go on sale in May, and there is also some talk of a smaller Jaguar saloon to follow, to combat the new B.M.W 3-Series. As for the electric car, the future looks bleak, especially in Britain! At the recent Detroit Motor Show, the CEO of General Motors admitted that there are very few takers in Europe for their advanced Ampere /Volt models, and I wonder how many Nissan 6

Leafs are being sold at the moment? The petrol engine designers haven’t given up the fight against their diesel rivals, demonstrated by Ford’s award-winning ECOBOOST three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine - a gem of a 1.0 litre unit available in 100 or 125 b.h.p. form, with a low CO2 (99 g/ km)emission and fuel consumption in the 50 m.p.g. range. They have already tried it in the Ford Focus, but now it is available in their recently face-lifted Ford Fiesta model which it was really designed for- and believe me, this small and stylish family car is good! Meanwhile the stunning new Range Rover continues to attract the plaudits. ‘The best and most luxurious 4x4 in the world’ some say, but that kind of machinery comes at a price, starting at £71,295 for the 5-door 3.0 TDV6 Vogue, rising to £98,395 for the 5.0 V8 Supercharged petrol model. It’s beautifully made with a superb off-road performance, but I certainly wouldn’t like to drive it over some boulder strewn terrainin case I scratched it!

“The most rewarding part of being a Shared Lives carer is seeing the change in the people that come to live with us. We have had adults come to us without any confidence. Some have spent much of their lives being over protected and it is lovely to see them become independent. Some people will then move on into their own homes.” Shared Lives carer

HELP SAVE MARFORD FROM SUPERMARKET SWEEP

SAY NO TO THE BIG BOYS Is nothing sacred these days? Well apparently not, not even the Red Lion car park at the top of Marford Hill. You may be surprised to learn that an application has been made for the Red Lion car park in Marford to host a retail/convenience store. No specific supermarket chain has been associated with the application officially, however, it is expected to be one of the big 4 who have EXPRESSed an interest in putting a smaller local type store on the site. Whilst I would forgive you all momentarily for briefly thinking that might be handy, I would like you to consider the bigger picture. As you can imagine local businesses are concerned they will suffer a loss of business as a result of a potential national supermarket chain coming into our villages. That one store could offer products and services that would affect several of our retailers in the local area and would we then be left with empty and boarded up shops in our villages? I dread to think. Additionally do we really want a modern eyesore on the main route up Marford Hill.

After all we are a village! Once we allow stores like this into our villages we really will lose our sought after nature, our appeal, and this might sound a bit dramatic but our overall identity too, and we’ll become just like everywhere else. I can’t imagine it would do our local house prices much good either. There’ll be delivery wagons coming and going, cars exiting the bypass at peak times to visit the store that probably wouldn’t normally do so. Not only that, the road safety around that area will be called into question, and how much increased traffic will this result in? The application is anticipated to be presented for a decision at the planning committee in March. And whilst its early days and the planning application might not be granted we cannot sit back and see what happens. Please support your local businesses and villages and say no to this application through the facebook page: www.facebook.com/

Escape to Africa Africa is very much in the spotlight at the moment, thanks to various television programmes. I now yearn to return to the continent that is closest to my heart. As a wildlife enthusiast, there are few places in the world where the experience of seeing animals in their natural environment is so magnificent. Game viewing in South Africa’s private reserves allows very close encounters with so many wondrous species. In season, whale watching off the southern coast is also amongst the best in the world – something I can personally endorse. Culinary experiences in much of Africa are nothing less than mouth watering. Many vineyards within an hours drive of Cape Town offer delicious lunches or dinners with the opportunity to sample their produce in beautiful locations. South Africa is well blessed with scenery including the Cape Peninsula in the west, its Garden Route in the south and the Drakensberg Mountains towards the east. An itinerary could also include the famous Battlefields region and a luxury train journey. A visit to Zambia’s thunderous Victoria Falls is a must. A water-based safari in a mokoro on the Okavango Delta

Local travel expert Lynne Swinn erton, boarding South Africa’s luxury Blue Train offers a different perspective on viewing wildlife. A trip to Namibia wouldn’t be complete without seeing some of the world’s highest sand dunes in the Namib Desert and a jungle trek in Rwanda will hopefully reward visitors with the heart warming sight of gorillas at play. East Africa holds its own very special experiences. Mount Kilimanjaro, the rolling plains of the Serengeti, UNESCOs listed Ngorongoro Crater and the sight of thousands of flamingos at Kenya’s Lake Nakuru all make it in to a photographer’s wish list. Add to all of this ancient Egypt, magical Morocco, star gazing like no other and stunning beach options such as Mauritius, Zanzibar and the Seychelles, why would you want to holiday anywhere else? KEEPING COMMUNITIES SAFE Digital Surveillance Wrexham Ltd is a Wrexhambased company that was set up seven years ago by two entrepreneurs from engineering and IT backgrounds, with the initial intention of finding ways to reduce crime and disorder. DSW now provide specialist CCTV and electronic security solutions. Their team of skilled engineers is dedicated to designing, installing and supporting CCTV and security solutions for every requirement and their mission is to provide the best specialist CCTV and security services available, providing each customer with a quality product, outstanding service and excellent value. They currently have ongoing bespoke CCTV projects and security solutions in many industries including, Nuclear Power, Renewable energy, Oil and gas, Aviation, Aerospace, Pharmaceuticals, food and general manufacturing industry not to mention retail surveillance systems, analytical video software systems and time-lapse film video production. They also provide Digital, IP and HD CCTV systems, harsh environment CCTV and highend domestic electronic security and perimeter protection systems. DSW designs and builds bespoke products to address specific problems within communities and has a passion for improving the quality of life of those whose lives are blighted by the antisocial behaviour of others. They are continually developing, testing and improving their products for the purposes of crime reduction and recording evidence of anti social behaviour.

Specifically, a wealth of technical, engineering and software experience has been put to use in developing ‘The Community Safety Camera’ - a major anti-social behaviour deterrent. This rapidly deployable post-top camera is light enough to be installed on any lamp post and has been awarded the Government's certification of IK10++ rating for resistance to vandalism and impact. Its recorded images are stored on board in incredibly clear high definition video and it is therefore a de-centralised CCTV solution. Police officers and PCSOs are able to access the footage directly, control the camera and review and back up recorded footage via a laptop with a secure wireless connection and secure encrypted software. This removes the need for the processes of requesting footage from a third party. To date DSW has had excellent feedback from county councils, community councils and housing associations who are already making good use of ‘The Community Safety Camera’. They have worked in close conjunction with Wrexham Community Safety Partnership for over 5 years on a weekly basis, and in that time they have developed a close working relationship with many Police Officers, PCSOs, councillors and community workers, which has helped when evolving this and other surveillance solutions and deterrents to anti-social behaviour. If you would like to find out more or see a demonstration, the team at DSW would be more than happy to speak to you.

WEDNESDAY INVITATION

It’s February already and all those well intentions and New Year resolutions seem to have been made such a while ago!

Perhaps some of our readers made a promise to themselves to ‘sort out their finances’ (or even sort their paperwork drawer!) and this is where we think we can help. For the months of February and March we are offering a no obligation financial review at our Wrexham office every Wednesday between 8.00 am and 7.00 pm (for the early risers and night owls). Currently the following 5 areas are perhaps the most popular topics where we are helping: • ISA Planning – Tax year end is some 7 weeks away. Have you looked to use this year’s allowance or are you going to miss the opportunity to save or invest tax efficiently? • Pension Planning – As usual plenty of changes and plenty of opportunities in this area. Would you like to review your pensions, improve your understanding of what they might provide for you and compare their performance over the last few years? • Savings and Investments – There is a saying that ‘knowledge is king’. If you have perhaps ISA’s, Bonds (perhaps With

Profits Bonds?) or regular savings plans do you know if they are at the top of the tree, somewhere in the middle or languishing at the bottom? Would you like to find out?

• Inheritance Planning – Would you like to consider how to use gifting opportunities (to gift towards your children or grandchildren) effectively? Would you like to review your current arrangements to try to ensure the threat of Inheritance Tax is reduced? • Long Term Care Planning – This may be of interest to you, your parents or your grandparents (or all of you). Would you like to ensure that you are making the best possible arrangements to protect your home and capital? Surely an area worth spending an hour considering? Of course, your priority area may be something different. We are very confident that one of our team of qualified advisers will be able to assist. If you would like to make an appointment please call Kate or Angela on 01978 311611 or email hadlow.edwards@sjpp.co.uk and we will look forward to meeting you. Wednesday’s in February or March may never have been so useful!

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and with the exception of the ISA, are dependent on individual circumstances. I would like to start off this month by welcoming a new member of our team PCSO 2858 Phil Jones. Phil has been a PCSO for some 4.1/2 year in the Gwersyllt area. He is an experienced officer and a valued colleague bringing his expertise and knowledge to our area. I would like to bring to your attention once again, complaints about dog mess. I know I keep going on about this but it seems to be an ongoing problem in a lot of areas. I have been informed by a resident in Penley that there are issues there also. It has been reported that the main areas are along Ellesmere Lane, around the garages off Pendas Park, along the main road outside the shop and passed both schools were the children walk to and from school. This is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. The Environmental Officers have been informed of these areas and will be out in force watching you together with your local PCSO’S. On a different note and for the attention of all parents and Facebook users, it has been reported that two girls aged approximately 19 years old with blonde hair both having Australian accents, have been handing out wristbands outside Ysgol Dyffryn in Conwy. These wristbands advertise a company called Bongo, this is an Australian company. The wristbands say ‘Bongo Knows you’ on them, and they are asking people to text a number with their name and address. Once they have text these details, the company 22

look you up on Facebook and send you text messages asking you questions, each time you respond it costs £2.50. This service is aimed at over 16s and is believed to be a money making scam. Please be vigilant of this and be careful how you use Facebook at all times. I would also like to bring to your attention that there have been a few burglaries at garages in the area during the last few weeks. So I would like to warn residents to be vigilant, making sure you keep your garages, shed, outhouses etc. locked and secured. As I have mentioned before I have a Crime Prevention Catalogue available from the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and anyone who would like a copy, please do not hesitate to call me or send me an email etc.

Safe Pet Transportation

by Maelor Veterinary Centre When taking your pets to a strange and potentially frightening venue such as the veterinary surgery or to boarding, the journey must be made safely and escape prevented. Plan ahead and ensure you have the appropriate equipment in advance of your journey. Dogs transported in a vehicle should either be confined in a crate or with a dog guard fitted to the vehicle; alternatively dog harnesses clipped into safety belts are available. On arrival at destination ensure your dog has a collar with identity details on a disc (and /or implanted microchip), if using this collar to attach to a lead, ensure the collar is tight enough to prevent it from pulling over the dogs head; in preference however a slip lead may provide more security. Puppies coming to the surgery for their first inoculations must be carried into the surgery in your arms or kept in a crate. The surgery is where sick animals come for treatment and we do not wish your young vulnerable puppy to become ill as a consequence of coming in contact with other patients at the surgery; so careful quarantine is required, do not allow your puppy to walk around the surgery floor. Cats are very fearful of car journeys as a

rule; therefore it is imperative that they are confined to a well designed strong carrying box of adequate size. Always line with some absorbent bedding material and have some familiar object from the home environment. The preferred carriers are plastic coated all wire cages that open from the top; these allow the cat to see out all around. There are a variety of plastic cages available, some better than others. Top of the list is the front and top opening type these give the choice of loading your cat from either direction, ensure all clips are present and are correctly closed. Bottom of the list are cardboard carriers, though very cheap, the cat cannot see out, and if determined enough can dig their way out of them and escape, if a cat soils them they become wet, soft and unsafe and cannot be cleaned. Remember to clean your carrier after use and have bedding ready in preparation for the next journey and store it in a dry place. We have wire cages available to loan for journeys to the surgery, we require a small refundable deposit. We strongly advise microchips for permanent identity of your pet. We can arrange for engraved pet discs to be made to your individual requirement in a variety of colours, shape and size and posted directly to your home.

We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine.

However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery. We still publish them for those people that read the magazine straight away and do so in the hope that a few people will be able to support the event and attend at short notice. The prestigious former Cunard liner has been moored in Dubai’s Port Rashid since it was sold to the firm Istithmar for £64 million in 2008. Initially the owners had hoped to transform the ship into a lavishly-appointed 1000room hotel, but new plans for a 300-room hotel which would see many of the ship’s original features maintained. A British consortium has proposed moving the QE2 to London and converting it into a floating hotel outside the O2 Arena – a move that could have created up to 2,000 jobs. However, it has been reported that a Chinese crew of 20 had boarded the ship – replaced a crew of 40 who had been maintaining the vessel – leading to fears that it is to be sold for scrap. Roger Murray of QE2 London said: “We have been told the ship is going to be put into a dry dock before being taken to an unknown destination in the Far East.

“That is a tragedy because it almost certainly means the QE2 is being sold as scrap. Our investors were going to give £20 million for the ship itself plus £60 million for renovation and the cost of bringing the ship back to Britain. “But the ship could raise as much as £20 million as dead weight scrap and the Chinese cash would be immediate.” The QE2 was launched in 1969 by the Queen, making its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. It was operated for nearly 30 years by Cunard, and was used to carry troops to the south Atlantic during the Falklands War. Its final voyage was to the Middle East in 2008. Support is needed to help save the QE2. Sign the e-petition by visiting: www.epetitions. direct.gov.uk petitions/43762

PLEASE PICK UP YOUR POOP! After reading in your magazine about dog fouling in our surrounding areas - I have to make it known and clear that there are offenders in the Bangor on Dee area. I am a dog owner and have to admit, I don’t particularly enjoy picking up my dog’s mess up, but I DO! Firstly I’m a responsible pet owner, secondly it’s the law and thirdly it’s disgusting not to. If I see any law breaking local residents leaving their dog’s mess behind, I WILL report them, without hesitation. Name & address supplied.

Overton Cricket Club held their Annual General Meeting in the White Horse, Overton on Tuesday 29th January. The following officials were elected to serve for the coming 12 months:Chairman: Mike Lawrenson. Secretary: Rob Lawrenson. Treasurer: Neil Woolley. Captain: Andy Clement. Vice Captain: Neil Woolley It was reported that the club had had a good season finishing a respectable 6th in the Shropshire 4th Division. The Treasurer reported a small profit for the year but this was not enough to balance out the loss suffered the year before. Fundraising must be increased to combat ever increasing costs and the club would appreciate offers of support, financial or otherwise, from all local business’s. The club are always on the lookout for new players, young or old and anyone interested should contact either:• Captain, Andy Clement on 07930 858644 • Secretary, Rob Lawrenson on 01978 710537 A warm welcome is assured! The new season starts on 21st April with a home game.

Thank you I would just like to say a big Thank You for everyone who sponsored me for my readathon. I was raising some money for my old gym - The City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club-to help towards funding for their new Olympic stars of the future. I read 4 books in 1 week, Grave dirt, The Magic Finger, The Wish Cat and Holes and raised £55 for the club, which was gratefully received. Thank you. I trained at The City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club as an Elite gymnast with World Class National & International coaches Claire Duffy & Amanda Reddin, alongside the World and Olympic National & International gymnasts Beth Tweddle, Hannah Whelan, Jenny Pinches & our new rising star Rebecca Tunney. I represented my Club and Country at National & International level but decided to change direction. I am now enjoying using my knowledge and experience helping out at the Liverpool club, coaching the pre-Elite gymnasts aged 7 to 9 years. Thanks again to everyone!
