your life, your home, your community. How are you all doing? I’ve definitely perked up since the clocks went forward at the end of March. Winter was dragging on that bit too long for me and I was beginning to feel fed up to be honest. I’m sure I’m not on my own. Mind you, it’s not surprising - spring, summer and winter all rolled into one last year and it feels like we’re only just coming out of it now. At least we’re not in recession according to the news, but if you speak to most of the small local businesses I’m not sure that they would agree! If the government is struggling to predict and calculate how to stimulate the economy, it may well be better investing in how to predict a more accurate weather forecast. It really does feel like our economy is 100% dictated to by our weather. Our farmers have already had a tough start to the year. A prolonged cold March with snowy conditions resulted in record numbers of people looking for last minute holidays abroad, instead of the usual numbers holidaying in this country or starting the seasonal DIY.At least we surely can’t have a summer as wet as last year’s. If we can have a decent summer does that

mean the economy will start to grow at a higher rate? I wouldn’t like to say, but if our top politicians can’t agree whether Maggie Thatcher made or broke this country I’m not sure we’re in safe hands! And I’m also not sure that most people’s wages would agree we’re not in recession either, especially after a winter of petrol, gas and electricity costs. At least we’re moving into a few months where we’ll need less heat – well, I hope so at least! I think the butchers are all still doing well after the horsemeat scandal returned us all to their doors, which is great news. And despite it being a Monday as I type this, a text from one of my advertisers telling me that for him our magazine is working as well today as it did a few years ago, is like music to my ears. That’s like a dose of the sun in itself and I’m happy – well, at least for today...... Have a lovely month of May.

All the best, Jill

Splashing around with Suzy! Some years ago I went to interview the Head Brewer of Border Breweries at his home in Wrexham. No- not about beer, but cars, as he had indeed been an owner and admirer of Alvis cars over the years. I asked him how many of them he had owned, and what models they were. “Four actually” he said “ All of them 3.0 litre models of the ’60s with the stylish saloon bodies designed by the Swiss coachbuilder, Graber. My wife and I have called them all Gala 1, Gala 2 and Gala 3 etc.” he went on, his face glowing with pleasure as he gazed at the latest model gleaming on the drive. “Why Gala?” I asked. “Because every day my wife and I drive them is a gala day.” he said. ‘A bit over the top’ I thought to myself, but I could see why both of them were so thrilled about their beautiful , sophisticated Grand Tourer with it’s elegant low-slung body. Then, a year ago we bought a Suzuki Splash. My wife saw it for sale in Cheshire, and when we went to see it, she was captivated by its metallic turquoise colour scheme and its immaculate overall condition. We 6

had driven several similar mini-MPV test cars before, such as Nissan Note, Renault Modus, Vauxhall Agila etc., but we preferred the Suzuki Splash SZ4, 5-door, with its high seating position, making it so easy to get in and out of, and giving very good all-round vision. It’s also very versatile, with a surprising amount of luggage space, especially with the rear seats folded. The large container under the boot floor is very useful. Suzuki know all about high-efficiency engines, and the 1.2 litre, four cylinder, double overhead camshaft unit in our Splash model develops a healthy 85 b.h.p., allowing it to accelerate to 60 m.p.h. in 12.3 seconds, and on to a top speed of 109 M.P.H. A glance at the trip computer reveals that it has averaged 48.3 m.p.g., and its 129 gm/km CO2 emissions ensures a low Road Tax. Well equipped and comfortable, it certainly is a little charmer, and the way that my wife looks at it reminds me of the Head Brewer and his Alvis! So, if you see us driving around the area in it and she is smiling, it’s for Suzynot for me!

local cricket club news With only a few weekends left to prepare ourselves for the 2013 season, after being hampered by soggy and snowy weather, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our members for their continued support. The 2012 season was another successful one for our team; we competed well and finished the season in 5th position of division 4. We had fantastic support from our playing members and fielded a strong opposition at every fixture, with youngsters adding new blood and sustained enthusiasm from our veterans. The beginning of the season was dry, with the best of the cricketing weather seen early in the season but the confirmation that 2012 was the second wettest Summer on record, took its toll on our pitch and the pitches of our opponents. The season played out well with everyone having their 15 minutes of fame, either in the field or in their batting prowess but none of

8

this could happen without the support of our fair ladies and the collective team effort in preparing our ground and pavilion. Fundraising will be vital this year; sadly a flood has caused considerable damage to our pavilion with water spoilage from floor to ceiling and we are researching grant support in order to run a junior cricket night from next season, which could be an exciting prospect for some! We look forward to welcoming old face and new at our ground this season and hope that you bring the sunshine with you when you come! Rob Lawrenson, Secretary Contact for details: Chairman Mr. M. At last Summer seems to have arrived... The warmer weather will result in a rapid hatch of dormant flea eggs that have been lying low awaiting optimum conditions to develop and emerge as fully fledged biting ‘critters’. There are many products on the market for treating pets and their environment, however products that are available over the counter in supermarkets and pet shops are generally of the older generation of drugs and may well be inferior to those available from your vet. We recommend using a product that not only kills adult fleas but also interferes with the life cycle of the flea, ensuring that eggs, pupae and larvae do not develop. You must use the product according to manufacturers recommendation, observing frequency of application. Prompt treatment of your pets now , will help prevent your house becoming infested with fleas, their eggs, pupae and larvae. 10

Treatment of all cats, dogs and rabbits in the household is essential; often cats are the culprits for bringing fleas into the home as they range further afield. A new generation of drug for cats and dogs is now available. It contains the first flea control agent that works through bioactivation, the drug only becomes active once ingested or in contact with the flea. This product offers assurance of safety of use as there is no residue of active substance on your pet. This product fulfills the criteria of rapid kill of fleas, cessation of egg laying and activity against developing stages; therefore keeping the household free of infestation. If you find yourself in the awful situation of being infested with fleas in your house, do please contact your veterinary surgeon for advice on how best to deal with the problem. We have the expert knowledge and access to the best drugs available for your animals and to treat the house.

Spring Celebration

Contributed by Miss Viv Lavis-Jones

The coracle was a flat-bottomed boat with rounded ends with a seat across the middle. It was made of willow and would originally have been covered in hides but this became changed to canvas, which made a lighter boat, coated with up to twelve coats of pitch or tar. They differed from boats made at Llangollen being lighter - 35lb to Llangollen’s 55lbs. Bangor coracles were designed to hold just one person unlike boats on other Welsh rivers many of which were designed to for two people. They were manoeuvred using either a short paddle or a long pole. Fishermen would sling a net between two boats and then drift down-stream with the flow of water to catch the salmon. They would then land and carry their net, paddles and coracle back up stream to repeat the process. Many inhabitants of Bangor have for centuries made a living out of the river often by illegal poaching. Prior to the twentieth century, regattas and coracle races would be held each year when the fishermen would compete over a length or river for prizes. When celebrations took place in the village to mark special occasions a coracle race was often included in the day’s events. One such occasion was Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations of 1897 when a coracle race was very keenly fought and was won by C Johnson with J Johnson as a runner up. Bangor’s coracle men also took part in the Chester Regattas such as one held in August 1878 in which seven men from Holt and seven from Bangor competed over a 18

straight course of 440 yards. The race was won by G Dunbabin of Bangor. In recent times raft racing has taken over from coracle racing on the river. In 1976 when the Bangor carnival was revived the villagers organised a River Spectacular as part of the celebrations. One of the events was a raft race with the launch site at Turn o’ Dee and the finishing line at Bangor Bridge. For several weeks beforehand the sound of hammering and welding would be heard as competitors designed their own version of rafts - petrol drums and tyres were in shirt supply in the area for weeks prior to the race. One year Val Green was looking for a fellow ‘nutter’ and persuaded the author to crew a raft constructed by her husband, Chris. He was supposed to tow the raft with the girls onboard upstream to the starting point. However when Val and Viv, dressed as Bunny Girls, arrived at the riverbank it was just in time to see the raft disappearing in the distance. By the time the girls had run all the way to the starting point the race had already begun. To the rhythm of Val repeating ‘just wait until I get the b**** home, I’ll c**** him’, they powered their way down stream overtaking several competitors on the way but the leaders had too great a start. If only the course had been a few yards longer - ‘we was robbed’!

George Osborne presented his fourth budget on 20th March 2013 in the midst of us still having a weak economy. At least we are not in a triple-dip recession! Many of the announcements were aimed at businesses to stimulate economic growth. Here we look at some of the headline items and key allowances for individuals and businesses. • The basic personal allowance (currently £9,440) is to be increased to £10,000 from 6 April 2014. This is a year earlier than planned. • Support for home buyers - A new Help-toBuy scheme was announced. The government will provide interest-free loans of up to 20% of the value of new-build properties as a deposit, provided buyers can find 5% themselves. This is good news for those currently house-hunting and also for current homeowners as it could result in house prices increasing.

do not benefit from a reduction in their corporation tax rate. • Employment Allowance - an allowance of £2,000 per year will be available for all businesses and charities to offset against the cost of employer’s class 1 national insurance contributions (NICs). This should provide a real reduction in the cost of employing workers by all types of businesses. The new employment allowance will reduce employer’s NICs paid from 6 April 2014. It’s a shame that we need to wait until 2014 for the change! • Key Allowances for tax year 2013-14 • Personal allowance up to £9,440 from £8,105 • Higher rate tax down to £32,010 from £34,370 • VAT threshold up to £79k from £77k

Denbigh Plum Fruit varieties derive from chance finds as well as intentional selection and breeding. Old varieties often came to local prominence through discovery of a notable tree by an interested individual. Even after widespread commercial sale of fruit trees began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many varieties were not widely known and became only locally popular. In recent times we have become more aware of the many threats to our native biodiversity, although often we recognise losses only with hindsight. The diversity of our ‘fruit heritage’ is also threatened. The ‘localness’ of many traditional varieties makes them particularly vulnerable to neglect, changes in fashion and taste, and simply lack of awareness. Where and what are Denbigh plums? In North Wales, and particularly in the Vale of Clwyd, many people know of the ‘Denbigh Plum’. They may have, or think they have, one growing in their garden, or know of a tree said to be a ‘Denbigh’. Since 2009 Denbigh has held an annual Denbigh Plum Festival, recognising the pride the town has in having the only plum variety thought to be native to Wales. Nevertheless, the true identity and status of the Denbigh Plum remain uncertain. Do we all mean the 24

same thing when we talk about them: are all ‘Denbighs’ the same? What is the extent of their distribution, and are they threatened? Identification: Since 1988 I have accumulated a small collection of supposed Denbigh plum trees from a variety of sources. These have been grown in broadly similar conditions in the same garden. There appears to be a degree of variability in the appearance of both the trees and the fruit, depending on their source; whether this reflects underlying genetic variability is not yet known. There are however a number of common features shared by these trees. If you would like to contribute records of Denbigh Plum trees – especially old or large trees, or other information that may be helpful, please submit these via Cofnod’s Online Recording System, www.cofnod. org.uk using the special recording form for Denbigh Plums, or contact me by email at: OPJ@talk21.com

Congratulations to Mrs Lily Dawson on her 100th birthday on the 16th of April Mrs Dawson was born at Carden Park Lodge in 1913. She then moved to Shocklach where she attended school. She has also lived in Cross Lanes and Threapwood, where she married her late husband Arthur Dawson, which they both farmed at Horsemans Green and Tallarn Green before retiring to Bangor-on-Dee. She has now lived in Bangor-on-Dee for 53 years. For her birthday last year, she went to Welshpool Airport for a helicopter ride, which she enjoyed very much. This year she will be having a birthday party with family and friends.
