I love its new look, and the adventurous use of green is very fitting for an old property, and also very fashionable as associated with being ‘environmentally friendly’ etc. Not just a new paint job, without a doubt it has a positive impact on the village as a whole. Worthenbury will be feeling even more like the poor relation now, especially as it was only last month when it was expressed that neighbouring Bangor on Dee had more time and attention spent on it by the local authority to keep it well maintained. Don’t forget beautiful Worthenbury have to suffer the eyesore of their boarded up and deteriorating old local pub as well, and I’m sure I’m not on my own in wishing something could be done about that! I spoke too soon last month hoping for an Indian summer and now I’m just wondering whether to get my arm bands out for delivering this month. More importantly I hope you’re all dry and safe and have escaped flooding this time round. Lots haven’t around Wrexham I know, and I can’t imagine how awful it must be coping with that. Thank you for your letters this month, all received electronically so no soggy pen ink to struggle with. It seems Worthenbury isn’t on its own for feeling a little neglected and untidy, or the Wrexham business, that we featured last month, alone in worrying about Wrexham Town Centres future as a thriving shopping venue.

Mind you shopping habits have changed over the years with the ease of the internet, and people haven’t as much spare money to shop around with aside essential purchases these days. But aside from these obvious factors Wrexham seems to have extra difficulties to cope with as well, as one lady tells us she prefers to go to Oswestry. It makes me wonder how many of us prefer to shop not so locally for one reason or another? I’m sure we all realise it would be helpful to shop within our local community and help our local independent businesses survive where possible, but is the supermarket just too convenient? I’m consciously trying to use local independent businesses for more of my shopping where possible, and it would be great if more of us could do the same; e.g. green grocers and butchers instead of the supermarket to start with! In the meantime I’ve just had a peak outside and the sun seems to be out, but it can’t fool me. Now where did I put my wellies, which I bought from a local independent retailer? Seriously, joking aside, I did! Keep dry and I’ll see you next month.

With Halloween and Bonfire night approaching, our thoughts turn to animals that have or may be developing a fear of fireworks. If measures are not taken to reassure animals during these experiences they may get worse with each encounter and lead to a phobia of loud noises of any kind. Symptoms of fear shown often shown include trembling, shaking, cowering behind furniture, soiling in the house, pacing, panting, barking excessively and refusal to eat. Provide your animal with a “den” where they feel safe .Walk your dog during daylight hours in the run up to the firework period. Close windows and doors to reduce noise level and prevent escape, draw curtains and

turn on the TV. Provide extra litter trays for cats. Ignore fearful behaviour and do not punish your pet for such behaviour. The den can be enhanced by the use of a plug in diffuser releasing cat or dog appeasing pheromones. There are also collars for dogs to wear that are impregnated with pheromones. “Thunder Jackets “when worn enable the animal to feel safe and secure. Nutritional supplements can help to reduce anxiety and are available in both tablet and liquid form. There are CDs available to help to desensitize your pet to loud noises. This letter has been sent out via the school, to all parents concerned. We are working with the Headmaster, Mr Walker at the School, the School Governors and the Community Council to address this problem. Notice to all parents It has been brought to my attention once again, that some parents picking their children up in vehicles from Ysgol Deiniol on The Ridgeway are parking / leaving vehicles in dangerous and unsuitable places, ie. too near to junctions, double parked, on pavements and corners etc. Could I ask all parents to be more vigilant with regard to this issue and think of the safety of, not only the children, but also themselves, other pedestrians and road users, before leaving their vehicles wherever they see fit. Whilst I appreciate this is a busy time and parking is sometimes limited, these problems could be avoided if we just think before we act. There is also an issue with vehicles parking across driveways of residents on The Ridgeway. So if parents could be mindful of this, and give some consideration to these residents allowing them access to and fro without any problems, this would be greatly appreciated. This request is supported by Ysgol Deiniol, The School Governors and the Community Council. Thank you for your assistance. Back to my monthly policing - Also I would, once again like to bring to the attention of all residents in Marchwiel (and other areas) of the issues of Dog Fouling. I have recently been informed that there are still some of you who walk your dogs on the football playing field at the bottom of Station Road. It is an offence to allow your dog onto the playing areas, ie: the skate park, children’s play park and football pitch. There is a sign with all 8
this information at the bottom of Station Road as you enter the track down to the old railway line. I did have another sign put up on the fence by the children’s play park as I know a few of you walk down that way also, but unfortunately this has been removed, by whatever means. I will try to get a replacement for this so there are no excuses. These areas need to be kept clean and tidy for the children to play safely. Anyone seen on the football pitch with a dog or allowing their dog to run onto the pitch will be issued with the appropriate fixed penalty ticket. The Council Enforcement Officers and myself will be monitoring this situation on a very regular basis so don’t be the one to get caught. Dog fouling is a very serious and prominent issue which affects a lot of people. If everyone takes responsibility with their dog then this problem can be wiped out instantly to make the village a nicer place to live. Please be responsible and PICK UP your dog mess. Thank you. localgold Wrexham's Olympic medal rowers have been honoured in a civic reception outside the town's Guildhall. Double gold winner Tom James and silver medallist Chris Bartley, both 28, were welcomed home in a public event at Llwyn Isaf. Bartley said the event was special as his parents had been unable to attend the huge athletes' parade in London after the Games. Both men said they hoped to compete in the next Olympics in Rio in 2016. Bartley from Farndon became the first Welsh Olympic medallist at London 2012 with silver in the lightweight men's four. He had to be helped from his boat and then onto the medal podium, and later said that while happy with the achievement it had come with extreme pain. While James had an official gold post box painted in honour of his achievements, Bartley's friends covered his village post box in silver foil for fun. James, who grew up in Coedpoeth, is to be granted the freedom of Wrexham borough in recognition of his achievement at the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Games, where he won gold with his team mates in the men's coxless four. Both had been pupils at King's School in Chester where they rowed. 10
Guard of honour Wrexham's young sporting ambassadors and elite athletes formed a special guard of honour to escort the athletes to the Guildhall during the event. The rowers then received a civic welcome by the mayor before making an appearance on the balcony. Meanwhile, sporting clubs and associations from around the county borough provided demonstrations and tasters to encourage youngsters to take up sport. James and Bartley said they hoped to be fit enough to compete for a place in the next Olympics. "It is a big thing for both myself and Chris to be honoured by our home town and we're both very grateful to the people of Wrexham for all the support they have given us," said James.

What is the cost of Private Care? Whilst for many of us an increase in life expectancy may seem like good news, it has to be recognised that there are financial implications for those who live longer. Few people take the time to plan for how they would meet the cost of paying for care should the need arise. This is despite the fact that if you have assets of more than £23,250 in England and £22,000 in Wales you would not be entitled to financial assistance from the local authority. In 2010 the average fees for care home residents in Wales was £28,184 p.a. for nursing care and £22,160 p.a. for residential care. In the North West the comparable figures were £27,352 and £19,682 and in the UK £29,075 and £22,160- * Source: Laing & Buisson UK Market Survey 2010. If fees increase at the rate of 5% per annum, in ten years that average figure of £29,075 will become £47,360 per annum. This could well be far in excess of what people are spending when they are fit and healthy and in their own homes. Many people only come into contact with the care system at the time they or their relatives are due to enter care
and getting to grips with everything can be difficult at an already stressful time. It is essential to know about state benefits, the role of the local authority and the NHS, and most importantly the choices you have in relation to paying for care. In addition you need to be aware of the implications for the family home and if a spouse or relative still lives at home. A specialist financial adviser in the long term care market would be able to help at this time; amongst other things explaining the care and benefits system, advice in relation to the care contract and the options available for paying for care. This could include paying from capital, investing to provide an income, a tailored care fee plan or a combination of all of these. An even better option would be to take advice in good time to ensure that your assets are held as efficiently as possible to minimise the impact of care costs. Recipe of the month
Spiced autumn lamb with butternut squash purée Makes 4. Ingredients: ½ tbsp cumin seeds ½ tbsp coriander seeds 1 garlic clove, crushed olive oil rack of lamb, 2 racks, each six bone, French trimmed 500g butternut squash or pumpkin, peeled and chopped butter a small handful coriander, chopped How it’s done: 1. Crush the spices in a pestle and mortar. Mix together with the garlic and a large slug of olive oil and some seasoning then rub all over the lamb. Leave to sit for half an hour. 2. H eat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Cook the lamb for 20 minutes for pink then leave to rest for 10 minutes. 3. M eanwhile steam the squash until tender then whizz in a food processor with a knob of butter and seasoning. Stir in the coriander. Serve 3 cutlets each with some purée.

essential gardening This month brings a fantastic display for those gardens that have plants that give Autumn foliage. It usually brings a multitude of different hues. This month you really notice the change in temperature and the sudden shortness in daylight ( How depressing) but the days when sunny bring a sharp freshness. Maintenance: It is a great time to visit gardens that have Autumn colour such as Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire and Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent. Rake up fallen leaves and either place them on the compost or pile them up to make leaf mould. If you have not started clearing up its time you did, burn or bin any perennial weeds or debris that shows signs of fungal infection. Dig over empty beds. Finish planting evergreen shrubs. This is the best time of the year to take hardwood cuttings and collect any berries from trees and shrubs for seed sowing. Give conifer hedges a last trim for the winter sets in. Plants new climbers and perennials.Protect alpines from winter wet. Lift and store dahlias, glodioli and summer flowering bulbs. Tidy ponds and remove pumps for the winter. Make new lawns from turf. Cut down the dying tops of perennial vegetables. 18
Lift and divide rhubarb. If you have any fruit trees fix grease bands to there trunks to catch pest as they crawl up. Insulate the greenhouse and if you have whitewashed remove it and if you don’t have a heater get one if you do have check that its in working order. It is probably your last chance to sow grass seed. Finish off planting spring bedding for next year. Pick up the last of your apples and pears before they get damaged. Lift and store the reminder of your tender perennials. Lift and store potatoes and carrots in a dry and darkish cool place. You should start to prepare the ground for planting bare rooted stock for next month. Sow sweet peas for next year under cover. It is best to do all the jobs in the garden sooner rather than later as with the shortening days you will only have the weekend to do things. If you have heavy soils like clay make sure you dig them so the frosts, rain, wind and snow can break it down. Incorporate as much organic matter as possible to improve the structure of the soil. Plant trees at this time of the year while the soil is warm for the roots to take hold. All this should keep you busy!

Kick-off for Football Exhibition Fans of Wrexham FC are able to relive some of the club’s historic moments at Wrexham Museum. ‘Wrexham Is The Name’ is the title the new exhibition about the history Wrexham FC that has just opened Wrexham County Borough Museum Archives.

The title of the exhibition comes from the song written in 1978 by Vic Blackwell at the height of the Robins’ success when they topped the old Division 3. Blackwell recorded ‘Wrexham Is The Name’ with the help of the James-Lambert singers, local musicians and fans of the club. The new exhibition tells the story of Wrexham Football Club from its foundation in 1864 just one year after the rules of association football were first agreed right up to the present day. The highlight of the exhibition is the Welsh Cup trophy, of which Wrexham are the 23-time winners. Wrexham won the first Welsh Cup final in 1878 before the cup even existed. It is a very rare occasion that the original trophy leaves the care of the Football Association of Wales, who have very kindly lent it to Wrexham Museum for the exhibition. Other objects from Wrexham’s football heritage include: 22
• A shower from the old changing rooms at the Racecourse • The Memorandum of Association of the club, from 1912 • The FAW Intermediate Challenge Cup • The Shopshire Reds Shirt Collection • Welsh cup winners tankards, 1970-71 and 1977-78 • Winners plaque from the 1948 tour to Allied occupied Germany The exhibition breaks new ground being the first time that staff at the museum have worked with a group of local students to design all the graphics for the interpretation in the gallery, and for the promotional material for the exhibition around the town centre, the County Borough and online. Four students from Glyndwr University: Gareth ‘Hugo’ Hughes, John Hayward,Arron Williamson and Liam Higgins volunteered their time and skills in computer graphics and design to work on the project. Expect a Call from Electoral Canvassers Residents in Wrexham are being advised that they will receive a knock on their door from the Council if they haven't completed their Electoral Registration Form. The Council has a legal duty to ensure forms are returned and have no alternative but to send out officers to knock on doors to get people to provide their information. Officers will be door knocking over the coming weeks and are likely to call on a weekend or evening as that's the most likely time to catch people in. If you don't want to be disturbed please ensure your form is returned as soon as possible. Providing the necessary information couldn't be easier if there are no changes to your information you can renew your electoral entry by phone, internet or text. If there are changes to your form, however, you will have to sign it and return it either by hand to Ty Dewi Sant, Rhosddu Road, Wrexham or post in the pre-paid envelope sent to all households with the Registration Form. 26
If you do receive a call from a canvasser remember, they only want the basic information asked for on the form – such as name, date of birth and nationality. In some parts of the country there have been bogus canvassers asking for other details such as NI numbers. Please provide only the necessary information and check ID badges. There is a number on the ID badge which you can call to confirm the callers identity. Cllr Malcolm King, Lead Member for Policy, Finance, Performance and Governance, said: "I would encourage everyone to ensure they have returned their form before they get a call from staff. There is a legal duty on the Council to call at least once to ensure that everyone is registered to vote. There’s also the financial cost to the council in sending out canvassers so the fewer calls they have to make the less it costs. Tommy has put together a crack 9 piece band especially for the gig with a 4 piece brass section led by Louis Noble of top local soul band, Zoot Serious & The Bellyful of Bop. Also featuring is top UK harmonica player Johnny Hewitt and the precocious young talent of 15 year old drummer Harvey Scott. Kabuki Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that results in mild to moderate learning difficulties and presents many problems for the people affected by this syndrome. mailbox Dear Jill, I read with great interest the inside cover page of the latest ‘Essentiallyours’. I have lived in Penley for some 23 years now and like Worthenbury, my village would not win any “Best Kept Village” awards either. Also like Worthenbury, this village looks very scruffy in parts with overgrown weeds at the kerbside, particularly in Ellesmere Lane. Also we have a similar local eyesore, namely the “ruins” of the Dymock Arms which burnt down many many years ago and seemingly there has been no attempt by any authority to rebuild it. But with regard to the weed growth, I have e-mailed Wrexham Council’s Highway Maintenance Department twice very recently and have not even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement. And don’t get me started on the very poor condition of the road surface at the bank in Ellesmere Lane which leads to the Shropshire border. Again like Worthenbury, neighbouring villages like Overton and Hanmer seem to receive more attention than does Penley. This, despite the fact that Penley has the very good Maelor Secondary school and the quaint Madras Primary school and has also seen the Penmere Park development in the last few years. Add to all this the fact that the Penley Post Office disappeared several years ago and this leads me to believe that my village has become neglected. Regards - J Fitzgerald

Dear Essentiallyours, I read, with interest, the letter from Steve Howarth in the September issue. I don’t agree with all that he suggests, be he does make a point. My suggestion would be to cut the parking timings, at Eagles Meadow, into smaller slots. Currently, the cheapest parking fee is £2. If I could nip in, pay for half and hour, i.e. 50p, and whizz around the shops, I would use Eagles Meadow much more. If I only want to nip into M and S to get a few groceries, or a pair of tights, paying £2 feels like a rip off. Needless to say I park in Tesco, and before I do my large grocery shop I go over the road. I am not the only one, either, no wonder Tesco car park is nearly always full. As it is I shop regularly in Oswestry, where there is a good M and S food store, lots of independant shops, as well as chains that we don’t have in Wrexham, and the parking is very reasonable. For larger purchases I use Chester, where they run a very reasonably priced park and ride system. I know that Eagles Meadow has a good security system and the men have to be paid, but would it not be better to have a full car park and shops, even if the money only comes in at 50p a time? I do hope the ‘powers that be’ think about what they are doing. If we were to lose Debenhams and/or ( heaven help us!) M&S, Wrexham would be in a very sorry state. Yours, G Williams Address supplied
