your life, your home, your community. Blimey, December already. Here we go again! Mind you at least I’m thinking about Christmas and have bought 2 presents so far, so that’s a good start for me. According to the people I speak to no one is getting in the festive spirit just yet , and I think we’re all going to be a bit last minute with the whole Christmas thing this year. I’m sure this has all just changed with November pay day having just been and gone, and the realisation that we have just over 3 weeks to go until Christmas!

a tight rein on their money, and we’re still feeling the pinch on our spare cash with increased costs in utility bills and petrol in the main. And I just thought it was me!

Never mind all that, we’ll all hopefully get a little time off for Christmas, which we can spend with our families and share some quality time with them, exchange gifts and be grateful for what we do have, and that will be priceless. Our local police have sensibly reminded us how to stay on our guard at this time of year What a funny old year it’s been; floods, when crime can be more of a risk, but The Olympics, Royal celebrations, more still enjoy ourselves and not have the fighting across the world in Afghanistan, time of year spoilt. Syria, Israel, and Palestine, and shocking Mind you did I just hear that we’re in for news with the continuation of the phone the worst winter in over a 100 years! I hacking scandal, Lance Armstrong, Jimmy hope not. Winter never fills me with joy! Saville, the outcome of Hillsborough, continued losses of our own army Have a lovely Christmas, eat, drink and abroad, to name but a few things that be merry, but stay safe and warm. stick in my mind. Not a year that will be forgotten in a hurry. And if that wasn’t enough, a tough old year economically as businesses close or struggle, banks continue to keep

I would like to start off this month with a positive comment in that I am very pleased with the results of our patrols concerning Halloween and Bonfire Night. The young people in the area, especially in Marchwiel have been on their best behaviour of late and I would like to commend them on this. I did not have one single report of any anti social behaviour issues on either of these nights. I was on duty during this period and spoke to a few youngsters early evening on Halloween and they were in good spirits (no pun intended) with their little bags and containers ready to collect their treats. I was even offered some of their sweets which I thought was lovely so thank you to William from Piercy Avenue and Philda, Scotts Close for their kind gesture. Bonfire Night was another success this year thanks to Sharon & Nigel Lloyd, and all their colleagues and companies who assisted. A lot of planning goes into this kind of thing, with Health & Safety issues being paramount, Highways involvement, requests to Council to close the road and the assistance of Amberon Traffic Light Company, together with the Fire, Ambulance Service, St Johns, Environmental Dept. Simons Fair, Police etc. There were a lot of strategy meetings with all concerned to make sure everyone was safe and had a good time. This was very well attended and enjoyed by all. So a big thank you to all involved to make this possible. On a more negative note, I would just like to inform residents that sadly there have been a series of garage/shed burglaries in the surrounding areas of late. Please be vigilant and take care when storing certain things 6

in your sheds or garages. Make them as secure as you can, don’t give these criminals an easy ride and make yourself a target. I have been giving out Crime Prevention Catalogues to a few residents and victims of crime so if anyone would like one of these please do not hesitate to contact me. They are a photocopied catalogue given to us by Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Association but there are some extremely interesting buys at cheap prices which may help to combat crime. It’s definitely worth having a look at, so just give me a ring or e mail if you are interested and I will print one off for you. Also I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Safe New Year and I hope Santa brings you everything you ask for and more. Thanks to Jill and the team at Essentiallyours for bringing us all the news and events throughout the year so a Merry Christmas to you also.

Phew! Where did that go? That’s it. It’s happened. I have finally turned into my mother – where did that year go to? No sooner than the tree had gone and the tinsel had been packed away it seemed like we were already watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics, whilst in reality we were all waiting and waiting and waiting for the summer that never arrived! We hope that all of our readers have had an enjoyable, safe and successful 2012 and as usual will finish with some completely irrelevant year end thoughts with no guarantee at all of any accuracy! Ponder these: • 90% of us will buy our pets Christmas presents. • The only word in the English language with 3 consecutive double letters is “Bookkeeper” – who said accountancy was boring? • 21 acres of pizza is eaten every day in the USA. • The experts on life expectancy are very confident that the first person who will live to be 150 has already been born. (Unless they eat all of the above pizza).

• Parker Brothers print more money every year for their ‘Monopoly Game’ than the US and UK Treasury combined. • ‘ Typewriter’ is the longest word in the English language that can be typed on one line of a standard keyboard. To finish with a couple of quotes, the first one to consider as you do your Christmas shopping from Oscar Wilde who said “A bargain is something you can’t use at a price you can’t resist’. And lastly on the subject of money and wealth from John Paul Getty (who was worth a pound or two) who famously said “My formula for success is rise early, work late and strike oil” We do hope you will continue to read our more serious financial articles in Essentiallyours and look forward to hearing from more readers in 2013. May we wish all of our readers a happy, safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year.

Abbey Gate College is a well-established, coeducational school for pupils aged 4 to 18 on the outskirts of Chester. The college emphasises the importance of building selfesteem and a love of learning in a friendly and caring environment. We value each and every child; the potential in every pupil is nurtured and encouraged and the latest ISI inspection noted that, ‘Students achieve their academic and personal potential’. Aldford School is home to the popular and successful Junior and Infant Department of the College and through beautifully maintained, extensive grounds and a wide range of expertise on the staff, pupils have the opportunity to develop all areas of the curriculum inclusive of a thriving music, drama and sporting timetable. At the Senior School record A level results this year were matched by all of the GCSE pupils achieving 5 A* to C grades, with over 72% of all exams awarded A* - B. However, education is far greater than simply achieving super examination results; at Abbey Gate College the journey itself is of equal importance, providing a stimulating experience, widening opportunities and providing an education for life.

Headmistress Lynne Horner praised the continued hard work of all of the pupils and staff, “We would like to congratulate all of the pupils on their considerable success. It demonstrates once again the excellent work ethic and ethos throughout the College, enabling the pupils to aim for excellence in all that they do”. In summary, Abbey Gate College is a successful and happy school, committed to maintaining traditional standards and high educational ideals with the most recent inspection report inspectors commending the high standards of teaching, learning and especially behaviour in the college.

Welsh Motoring Writers honour RAF Valley Over the years, the Welsh Motoring Writers Group has presented their prestigious Tom Pryce Trophy award to many famous people for their achievements on land, sea and air, including Jonathan Jones, Welsh power boat racer; Owen Wyn Owen, restorer of Parry-Thomas’ L.S.R. car ‘Babs’; Richard Parry- Jones CBE, Chief Engineer and suspension guru of Ford; David Richards, CEO of Prodrive; Nick Reilly CBE, President of GM Europe- the list goes on and on. However, this year marks the 20th. anniversary of the WMW Group, and so the Tom Pryce Trophy has been awarded to a whole group of people, namely R.A.F. Valley, Anglesey,- for its fast jet combat training ( probably the best in the world) and for its helicopter search and rescue operations. This year also marks the 60th. anniversary of fast jet training at Valley, being equipped with Vampire T11 two-seat jet trainers in 1952. Nowadays it’s the versatile Hawk trainers we see so expertly flown over our demanding Welsh terrain, turning young men and women into first rate combat pilots. The award was presented on behalf of the WMW by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Gwynedd, His Honour Huw Morgan Daniel ,to Group Captain Adrian Hill ADC RAF, Valley Station Commander, who, in his acceptance speech on behalf of all at Valley, likened the modern day pilot to racing driver Tom Pryce in his F1 car. This , of course, is continued by Wing Commander Andy Green breaking the Land Speed record in his jet car Thrust SSC and, next 16

year, at the wheel of Bloodhound, hoping to raise the record to over 1,000 m.p.h.! RAF Valley’s search and rescue operations are legendary. There are so many people who owe their lives to the skilful pilots who fly their helicopters with such precision- be it in stormy conditions at sea or hovering over the steep sloping sides of many of Snowdonia’s highest mountains. Some people rescued this way have been pleasantly surprised to see the Duke of Cambridge at the controls! This year, the Royal Welsh Crystal trophy has been inscribed ‘Athrylith ar Adennydd Chwim’ (Prowess Born on Wings of Speed), but the WMW’s special Automotive Achievement trophy was also presented to Tim Williams, Chief Executive of the Welsh Automotive Forum in recognition of its key role in Wales’ main industrial sector. So, at the end of another year, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

P s e E l a ...cars left unattended L to warm W P out a clear message h up give M t r A S No

Every winter, cars are stolen from driveways across North Wales because owners leave them unattended, keys in the ignition, while they warm up and the windscreens defrost.

Some victims nip inside for just a few seconds to collect a bag or finish the last mouthful of coffee - but that’s all the time an opportunist thief needs. Insurance companies may not pay out for cars stolen in this way and if your house keys are taken as well, you’re making your home vulnerable.

FREEZE OUT CAR THIEVES ON FROSTY MORNINGS: • Clear windscreens with de-icer and a scraper • Sit in your vehicle while the heater de-mists the windscreen If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call 101 or 0300 330 0101 and ask for your local police station. If you see a crime being committed call 999. NORTH WALES POLICE A safer North Wales

BOYS & GIRLS, 7-16

Open the door to success – with Entrance Exams at King’s School life at King’s inspires children of all ages to fulfil their potential. Not just with excellent academic results - King’s is one of the top performing schools in Cheshire – but also by developing skills, confidence and positive aptitudes for life. Outstanding teaching staff and a unique learning environment combine to encourage and stretch young minds, with a wide range of activities helping our students discover and explore their interests and talents. Our Junior boys and girls, aged 7-11, are helped to flourish and become ‘happy learners’ in small classes within their own self-contained – and extremely well-appointed – school. Wrexham County Borough: It is our aim to safeguard the road user within the County Borough of Wrexham throughout the winter months. There are 10 priority precautionary gritting routes which covers 40% of the road network of 1140 km’s of County Borough maintained roads. The gritting routes are pre-determined utilising criteria such as height above sea level, road classification, road gradients and proximity to schools, bus routes, local industry and shopping areas which are likely to generate high volumes of traffic. Resources: Our objective is to ensure that rocksalt is spread on the highway before the formation of ice. To achieve this a dedicated workforce comprising of 40 qualified drivers operate a fleet of 14 gritting vehicles, which are based centrally within the street scene department. Gritting Operations may be undertaken from one of our three depots based at Chirk, Llay or Wrexham Industrial Estate and spread approximately 4,000 Tonnes of rocksalt onto the County Borough road network during an average winter. Rocksalt: The preferred de-icing material utilised by Wrexham County Borough Council is 6mm nominal size rocksalt, which is spread onto the road network at a rate of 10 - 15 grams/m2 prior to the development of frost and ice. This figure is increased to 40 grams/m2 during the onset of snow conditions. Rocksalt is mined from a nonrenewable source and, in high concentration can be environmentally unfriendly and in certain situations can damage vegetation. It is therefore important that the material is only used when necessary and in the correct locations. To effectively remove ice from the road surface the rock salt requires the action of traffic, which assists in the process of breaking down the salt 22

granules into a saline solution. This rapidly melts the ice and prevents further ice forming for several hours. Salt Bins / Heaps: Salt bins/heaps are located in areas for the use of pedestrians and motorists to teat the public highway only. The council currently maintains in excess of 200 salt bins throughout the County Borough. Salt bins are provided in strategic locations that cannot be accessed by our main gritting vehicles but are subject to being individually assessed against criteria with includes, • Non Precautionary gritting routes • L ocation within the bounds of the public highway •B enefit to road safety, i.e. areas with steep inclines • Traffic volumes •P roximity to schools and locations of public interest A pro forma to aid assessment is carried out for all new requests for salt bins in accordance with the agreed winter service policy. Community councils may purchase salt bins and rock salt from the council providing that any new salt bins are distinguishable from the Environment Department salt bins and approved location on the public highway. Supply of rocksalt to the public: During the winter months many requests are received from members of the public for this Authority to provide them with rocksalt for personal use. Unfortunately, our salt stock levels do not cater for random supplies outside of our controlled winter maintenance operations and therefore our policy to not supply rocksalt for personal use has been derived. This ensures that our resources are maintained for use by this Authority to provide the most efficient service to the general public.

IMPORTANT NOTICE We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine.

However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery. We still publish them for those people that read the magazine straight away and do so in the hope that a few people will be able to support the event and attend at short notice. A few extra people at a charitable cause makes a huge difference!

essential gardening Flower Garden - Prune roses down tallgrowing bush roses by about a half to help prevent wind-rock loosening and damaging their roots and shorten all the branches on standard roses. Plant barerooted rose bushes this month. Shrubs - December is a good time to move evergreens and large shrubs that have outgrown their current position. Try to lift them with as large a rootball as possible and tie them to stakes for extra stability. Cuttings - Take hardwood cuttings now from a wide range of shrubs. Winter care - As cold nights bring the final leaves tumbling from the trees, rake lawns, sweep paths and patios, and pick up leaves from borders and rock gardens, where their soggy mass can smother tender alpines. Leaves also provide shelter for slugs and snails, so clear them up without delay, taking care not to disturb any nesting hedgehogs. Water features - Removing pumps and filters from ponds and water features helps prevent them being damaged by freezing water during the winter. Keep ponds covered with netting to prevent fallen leaves blowing in. Dividing perennials - If conditions are

mild and dry, continue to divide hardy perennials. On wet soils, it is best to wait until new shoots appear in the spring. Soil conditioning - Where areas have been cleared, start digging over and conditioning the soil. It is worth carrying out a soil test now to check its acidity or alkalinity level (pH). Most plants grow best in a neutral soil, so make adjustments if necessary by applying a lime dressing to very acid soils, or sulphur chips to alkaline ones. Planting shrubs - If the weather conditions remain dry, continue planting evergreen shrubs, conifers and hedging. Even when it’s cold, soil still retains a little heat, especially deeper down, which encourages root growth and helps plants get established. Always take time to prepare the soil well when you are planting long-lived shrubs. Be generous with the compost that you dig in to improve the soil. Repairs - Repair fences, trellises and wooden features. Once annual climbers have died away and perennial ones have lost their leaves, treat timber with wood colour or preservative. Replace loose posts and those rotting at the base before they collapse and cause greater damage.

There is evidence that Bangor and its outlying area has been occupied from prehistoric times. A Bronze Age (2500-800 BC) axe head was found in 1937/8 during the excavation for the foundations of Cadbury’s factory at the Twyll, Bangor. Clem Robinson, a 10/11year old boy of Bangor, who was watching the digging noticed the small metal object about 4ft below the surface of the ground and called attention to it. The factory manager, Mr E W Westwood sent it to Bournville where it required little cleaning to reveal it was a fine specimen of an early bronze worker’s art - an axe head, beautifully proportioned and fashioned, and in a condition so perfect that it seemed impossible that it could have lain hidden for more than a year or two at the most. The British Museum stated that it was a prehistoric axe head, or, to give its correct designation, a bronze socketed axe or ‘celt’ dating from about 2000 B/C. Using apparatus for metallurgical analysis ICI was asked to study the composition of the axe and to make an estimate of its value as a tool. A good modern bronze contains 80% copper, and up to 20% tin with traces of other elements added notably phosphorus. The celt contained 80% copper, 15% tin and small quantities of other metals and 0.2% phosphorus. The impurities revealed that the copper could have come from the impure copper ore such as found in Wales but may also have come from abroad. The hardness of the axe head was only about one-seventh that of mild steel - so that as a cutting tool it would it would be far inferior to the cheapest modern hatchet. 34

Some people advance the argument that there was a Roman settlement in Bangor before the establishment of the monastery because the township was so near to known Roman roads and was close to Chester and Wroxeter, centres of Roman occupation and to Holt where there was a Roman tile factory. The only evidence of this lies in a single tessera, a small square block of mosaic that was found in the graveyard. We need much more evidence than a single, 3/4 inch piece of mosaic before ascribing the title Roman to Bangor. In a talk on his search for the remains of local Roman roads given by John Dutton of Caergwrle to the Bangor History Society in 1987, he mentioned having found traces of such a road in Bangor that he believed to be the remains of the Marchwiel to Hanmer road. He later found evidence of the road in the area from Althrey Lodge to Cloy Farm. It was 28ft wide and disappeared in the old railway line. So we know from the presence of roads that the Romans were in the area but this does not necessarily mean that there was a Roman settlement in Bangor they could have just been marching past - with holes in their pockets! So until something more definite turns up I remain a sceptic.

Help available to turn empty homes back into use

People in Wrexham who are looking to return empty properties back into use can now apply for financial help thanks to a new scheme. The Houses into Homes scheme has made over £435,800 available to people across the county borough in a bid to provide people with much needed homes. The Welsh Government scheme provides interest free loans to enable the renovation, improvement and conversion of empty properties for use as residential accommodation. Once completed the properties can be either sold on the open market or let. Eligible properties must have been empty for six months or more. Single units of accommodation can receive a loan of up to a maximum of £25,000, with a maximum loan of £150,000 available per applicant. Cllr Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Housing and Planning said: “We welcome this initiative by the Welsh Government and encourage people to

come forward and apply for the grant which will help turn currently empty homes in Wrexham into affordable housing for those currently looking to rent or buy. Huw Lewis AM, Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage “Empty homes are, quite simply, a wasted resource. There are approximately 20,000 long term empty properties across Wales, depriving people of a much needed home and blighting the community. “Providing good quality, affordable homes for people is a priority across Wales and we have been exploring a number of ways to help us meet the growing demand. We hope the Houses into Homes scheme will encourage landlords, home owners and developers to come forward and turn empty properties into homes.” For more information about Homes into Houses scheme, please contact Siôn Wynne, Housing Partnership Officer, 01978 315 587 or email sion.wynne@ wrexham.gov.uk
