your life, your home, your community. I received an email this week advising of a new scam. Particularly likely in the countryside a child’s seat is being left on the side of the road with a blanket across it, giving the impression a child may have been abandoned. However, if you get out to help apparently you will become the target of crime and be dragged into the nearby hedge and robbed! Whilst I would like to think this would never happen, the cynic inside me wants to share this with you and make sure you stay safe, and alert. And if you’ve ever watched Crime Watch I don’t think you’d dismiss anything. What kind of world do we live in? It will come to the point soon where we will be too afraid to stop and help anyone for fear of our own safety. At a time when the news is full of Jimmy Savile and Lance Armstrong , I find it difficult to console myself that this kind of thing is the minority. I’m sorry to be doom and gloom at a time when we should be gearing up for Christmas and getting out our festive spirit for another year, but I do really wonder whatever’s next. It must be particularly difficult for those

more senior members of the community that were brought up in very different times. I remember the stories from my grandparents how they always left doors open and children played out in the street unsupervised. Bring back those days! And only 2 more pay days until Christmas, I can’t believe it’s come round so quick again! How are all your preparations coming along? Non- existent if you’re like me. Mind you I appreciate not many of us are flush with cash what with the price of fuel and utilities. So whilst you’re thinking about present buying, organising Christmas parties, family meals and get togethers please consciously try and use our local independent businesses and retailers where possible. In this economic climate they are the ones that deserve, need and value your business, so please bear this in mind before you shop, and do your bit to support the local economy.

All the best, Jill

Dragonsong is a new, glee-style youth Working with modern songs allows young choir for 13-18 year olds from across people to engage more passionately with the arrangements, undoubtedly a key element in the county of Wrexham. The choir is currently working towards a concert on the 11th December in Central Station, the rehearsal venue, where they will perform a range of modern songs in choral arrangements. The choir is led by their Musical Director, Charlotte Jones. In only two rehearsals, the choir have already started practising songs such as Price Tag by Jessie J, Someone Like You by Adele and Wings by Little Mix, with Charlotte’s choral arrangements often splitting into three-part harmony. Rehearsals are fun and easy going, and there’s no need to panic - solos are only given to those who volunteer! In addition, there is no painstaking audition process to join Dragonsong, it is open to anyone who loves singing and wants to join. It provides a fantastic opportunity not only to develop your singing but to socialise and engage with a new hobby in a relaxed environment. Andrew Fergus, the founder of Dragonsong, is keen to regenerate youth choirs by moving away from the common misconception that choir music must stick rigidly to its roots.

what makes Dragonsong so innovative. Tom James, Wrexham’s gold medallist rower, had been named patron of the choir and is keen to be involved in a Wrexhambased project. He believes Dragonsong will be highly successful in getting the younger generation involved in something “new and rewarding”. Dragonsong rehearsals are held every Tuesday at Central Station in Wrexham, from 6.30-8.00pm.

Cut your costs with a Picanto by Terry Davies

Kia introduced their new Picanto in fivedoor form first, but the 3-door model which followed certainly has its own special charm. The 1.0 litre Air version I had on test recently was quite an attractive family car-especially painted gleaming white- and as your eyes follow the design to the rear, you notice the twin chromed exhaust pipes, and, in the rear window, a small sticker which states this car has a seven-year warranty. Makes you think, that, doesn’t it? Seven year warranty; 99g/km CO2 emissions; no VED, and a new 3-cylinder 998 c.c Kappa engine that has a Combined Cycle fuel consumption of 67.3 m.p.g.! With 68 b.h.p. on tap, the Picanto can accelerate to 60 m.p.h. in 13.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 93 m.p.h. Though this ‘Air’ version is the basic model plus air conditioning, it also has a comprehensive equipment level which includes electric front windows and steering; RDS radio and CD player with four speakers and MP3 capability, and height adjustable driver’s seat. It also has front, side and curtain airbags, and its safe handling is due to its electronic stability control, electronic brake force distribution and ABS, so it certainly has safety very much in mind! 8

With its black interior trim and polished aluminium embellishments to steering wheel etc., it does have something of a ‘sporty’ look. (Remember those chrome exhaust pipes?) The driving position is good, as is the allround vision. Though this is a ‘city’ car, it’s bigger than you might expect, and is certainly roomy for rear seat passengers with plenty of head room. The fold-down rear seat backs extend the luggage capacity from the original 200 litres. A spare wheel is not provided-just a tyre mobility kit. With its small turning circle, the Picanto is quite nippy in town and city driving, but there are times during motorway driving, you may find on even slight gradients, you don’t have the necessary power to overtake some larger commercial vehicles. But----please remember that the little 998 c.c. engine under the bonnet is powerful enough for what it’s designed to do! So, this 1.0 litre Picanto is cheap to run, has Kia reliability built-in, and that amazing seven year warranty. It costs £8,395, but the amazing offers on Kia and sister car Hyundai models should ensure you can pay a great deal less than that!

GEOFF ACHISON & THE SOULDIGGERS To celebrate 15 years of great blues in the region we are really excited to present Australia’s top blues guitarist Geoff Achison. He is backed by 3 of the UK’s top musicians, Sam Kelly on drums ( in recent years Sam played with Gary Moore) , Paul Jobson on keyboards (ex Trafficker) and Spy Austin on bass. Geoff plays extensively worldwide and came to prominence in 1995 with his first trip to the USA. He represented the Melbourne Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and won the coveted Albert King Award for his guitar skills. He went on to accept an endorsement deal with the Gibson guitar company’s acoustic division. He formed a US based Souldiggers group in 1998 and recorded his third album ‘Gettin’ Evil’ in Portland, Oregon. Geoff has also conducted his guitar workshops at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp in Ohio. Come along then and listen to a great evening of soulful, rocking blues from an amazing guitarist with his crack band. We are hoping to recreate the great early days of Hooker Blues Club at Wrexham rugby club by holding the gig at Bangor on Dee Village hall with greater space for tables and easier seating.

We have been informed that the school parking problem mentioned in October’s issue is also presenting a problem in Bangor on Dee. So if parents could be mindful of this and give some consideration to the residents who live around the area of the school when dropping the children off, this would be most appreciated. Thank you. I would just like to make everyone aware that whilst out on patrol recently I have been given a letter received by a resident, informing them of a online lottery win that they had supposedly entered. I don’t know how you can win a lottery if you haven’t even entered it, but there we are. This has an attached payment processing form asking for personal and bank details. Never give your bank details over the phone or via a letter to anyone you are not sure of. Always check and double check, better to be safe than sorry. This particular company are called ‘Euromillions Commonwealth of Nations Online Lottery based in Ontario, Canada. The logo on the letter looks photocopied and it’s not even a good copy. Remember you never get anything for nothing so be mindful of these types of scams. Be a victor not a victim and don’t be taken in by these cruel, greedy con merchants. The prevalence of frauds involving investment in foreign companies is common in many areas of the UK. The residents of North Wales are not exempt and many people have been subjects of this type of fraud. Below are two links to websites from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C. similar to our stock exchange/FSA) which are useful. The first gives a list of all companies that they are aware of which have been used to 14

commit frauds and the second is a link giving advice to non US residents on how to avoid becoming a victim. http://www.sec.gov/investor/oiepauselist.htm http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/fleecing.htm We have recently been given information that a female has been going around door to door selling carpets in the Bangor on Dee area. It is believed she is targeting the elderly, approximately 40 - 50 years of age driving a silver vehicle. Just be mindful of this when opening the door to strangers etc. Put your chain on before answering and check all credentials thoroughly. Also I would like to make everyone aware that a ring was found outside Marchwiel school gates about a month ago and still has not be claimed. If anyone has lost one it is with the Headmaster Mr Terry Walker who will need a full description before releasing it to just anyone. I hope property and owner are reunited soon.

Local man to take part in the World Triathlon Championships

Wrecsam Tri Club’s Tim Burnett has gone to take on the world for Team GB in the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, which is to place at the end of October Tim, from Rossett, qualified for the Olympic-distance event this summer at the Shropshire Triathlon in Ellesmere and backed this up with a 4th place in his age group at the Deva Triathlon in Chester – also a qualifying event – a week later. He is hoping to improve on his performance at last year’s World Championships held in Beijing, where he finished in 16th place, 8th of the GB Team. Tim has also qualified to compete in the ETU European Triathlon Championships to be held in Alanya, Turkey next June, after finishing 3rd in his age group at the Bala Standard Triathlon in September. “It’s a great honour to be able to compete for Team GB once again. The atmosphere of the big events is superb. Britain always sends a good number of athletes which makes for a real party atmosphere but, of course, there is some serious racing to be

done as well! This year in particular we will be hoping to continue the excellent run of TeamGB sporting success. I am extremely grateful for all the support I have received, in particular for sponsorship from Hadlow Edwards Wealth Management and also from Wrexham Council, including access to the superb council sports facilities. Also from friends, clubmates and a very understanding family who put up with me going out training!” The Age Group World Championship coincides with the elite World Series Grand Final and paratriathlon world championships, all being held over a 3-day weekend of racing. Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee, Olympic bronze medallist, currently heads the World Series and will be looking to consolidate his position and take the championship.

It’s a great honour to be able to compete for Team GB once again

Don’t see red this festive season. Cut and control what you spend and next year won’t be about getting back to black. 1. Draw up a budget listing what you can afford to spend on presents, decorations and entertaining and stick to it. 2. Don’t panic buy at the last minute. Purchase presents week by week and take advantage of special offers and so on. 3. Get specific items for specific people. Make a note of who they’re for - and don’t forget where you’ve stashed them. 4. If you’ve got a group of friends who buy for each other, do a Secret Santa instead and set a reasonable ceiling for the present value. 5. If you know what you want, shop around for gifts. Use price comparison websites, such as Dealtime, Kelkoo or Pricerunner, even if armed with the results of your research, you then head off to the high

street to do your actual purchasing. Go to www.dealtime.co.uk, www.kelkoo.co.uk or www.pricerunner.co.uk. 6. Giving doesn’t have to cost money. Think about what people would really appreciate and give vouchers for babysitting, dog walking, car washing or decorating. 7. Make your own wrapping paper and gift tags. Keep them simple and sophisticated and you’ll come across as arty, not tight. 8. Do your own decorations. Go for a country walk and collect pine cones or make dual purpose edible decorations that look and taste good. 9. If you’re away over the festive season save on energy and bills by switching off and unplugging electrical equipment. 10. If possible, turn down your heating, but not so low that your pipes freeze and then burst if there’s a cold spell.

essential gardening Plant spring bulbs - Continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs, making sure you place them at the right depth. Tidy borders - Any perennials past their best can be cut right down, clearing away remains and adding them to the compost heap. Plant new hedges - Container-grown evergreens and conifers planted now will get a really good start in life, so complete new hedging projects as soon as possible. Divide perennial asters - Perennial asters like Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ produce striking display of bold daisy flowers from late summer for an attractive autumn show. Lift and divide clumps every second or third year after removing old flowering stems and replant the new sections, watering them in thoroughly. Wallflowers - Fill gaps in borders with wallflowers for a great blaze of spring colour. Space them so that they will grow into one another and, for extra impact, plant tulips with flowers in a contrasting colour between them. Lawn care - Spike lawns using a hollowtined aerator and brush grit into the holes to improve drainage. Frost protection - Watch out for frost, which can bring a sudden end to fading summer displays. Bring tender plants and crops under cover or, if time runs short,

keeping a few sheets of fleece handy to throw over plants or containers can give some temporary protection. Collect fallen leaves - Make light work of your autumn leaf collection by investing in a vacuum for the garden. Many have an internal shredder blade fitted that chops up the leaves as they pass into the collecting bag. This helps to speed up decomposition into friable leaf-mould. Seeds - Saving seed not only spares you expense, but can produce novel results. Try leaving the last of the sweet peas on their plants to set seed and develop pods. Once ripe, they can be picked and the seed removed, cleaned and stored. Alternatively, sow sweet peas now for early blooms. Seed can also be saved from crops such as peas and runner beans. Green manure - Cover areas of bare soil with green manure crops, especially in the kitchen garden. Field beans and winter rye can be sown well into November. Both these green manures can be dug into the soil in spring, helping to improve its structure and increase its organic content. They are equally valuable in breaking down clay soils and adding heart to sandy ones. Houseplants - Should be watered less frequently as temperatures drop.

In the Wrexham Advertiser of 1897 the following reports were published: “A meeting of representatives of Overton, Bangor Parish and District Councils with the Sanitary Inspector met to discuss the problem of the water supply and the drains in Bangor. The Medical Officer of Health, Dr Thursfield, reported that Bangor consisted of 65 houses with a population of under 300. The water supply was obtained in nearly every case directly from the river. There were about fifteen pump wells, one of which was a public well near the churchyard (installed by Mrs Webster in memory of her husband) that had always had a problem. The wells were not deep and the level rose and fell with the river and drew water from the same source. He had taken samples from four of the wells, one of which was the public one, the other three to dwelling houses and he found them to be so contaminated as to make them unsafe for potable use and the other wells would be similarly polluted. He thought that the sanitary authorities should make available to the parish a general piped water supply for the village. There was no public system of sewerage. A number of houses had their own cesspits but many discharged their liquid waste to open channels lined with brick, which were unfitted to act as efficient sewers. This led 26

to a stagnation of sewerage, particularly in Worthenbury Road where some of the channels and drains were inadequate and the smell was very offensive. Many were originally road drains. He recommended that a precise and detailed house-to-house survey be undertaken forthwith. It was said that if the village had a severe epidemic they would not be able to cope”. Two months later a report from Mr Maxwell Smith of Wrexham was read. He recommended that the best way to get good supply of water was to extend the Wrexham Waterworks Company’s main drain from Marchwiel to Bangor, a distance of two and a half miles. Also that the sewerage could be removed by gravitation and after being allowed to settle for sometime could be filtered and that a proper outfall drain 450 yards could be lain and manholes fitted. Than Bangor ratepayers objected to whatever scheme was suggested on the grounds of cost as the number of ratepayers was only 162, the rateable value was £3788 and the scheme proposed would necessitate a higher annual rate. They also said that the village was healthy and the death rate was low. The district councillor for Bangor, Ambrose Suttton of Althrey Hall, and others tried their best to get the villagers to agree on a scheme but it was to until the 1950s that a proper sewerage system and piped water was finally introduced to Bangor. This must have been a great relief to the schoolchildren whose job it had been before school to fetch buckets of water from the river to fill the boiler for the weekly wash or for baths!

DIVERSIFICATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL INVESTING

The September figures for inflation as measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) are important for all state benefits as it determines how much pensions and other benefits are to increase in the following tax year. The September figures have just been revealed as we go to press which show that in the twelve months to September 2012 prices increased by 2.2%. (ONS 16/10/2012) State pension rates will increase by 2.5% as the Government has agreed a minimum increase of this amount going forward. Inflation seems higher than 2.2% especially with energy companies having recently announced increases substantially above this figure and with savings interest rates seeming to be going in the opposite direction it is important that investors look for the best returns for their capital. Currently the best instant access rate is 2.85% (Moneysupermarket.com) which net of basic rate tax is only 2.28%, hardly making any real return above inflation. The alternative option of investing in the stock market is regarded as too risky by some, particularly in the volatile period we have had over the last few years but for people who are prepared to invest their capital for the longer term there are means of managing this risk.

Most succesful investment strategies usually involve spreading capital between four assets - cash, shares and property- with the allocation of capital to each asset depending on the amount of risk an investor is prepared to take and if they want income, growth or a combination of the two. No-one can predict which investment is going to produce the best returns year after year, but there are two things we can be fairly sure of; the best performing investment in one year can often turn out to be the worst performing investment the next year and, by spreading your money you stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns. In 2008 UK equities (as measured by the FTSE All share index) lost 30% over the year, yet in 2009 investor confidence grew and shares improved by over 30% over the year. Rebalancing a portfolio to take advantage of this volatility is a vital part of the ongoing risk management to ensure that too much money is not allocated to the wrong asset at any one time. Investors who are prepared to commit for the longer term are likely to be well rewarded in terms of their income and capital if they adopt this strategy.

Equities do not have the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit with a bank or building society, as the value & income may fall as well as rise. As temperatures are set to drop inWrexham and the county prepares for wind, rain and snow the message from WCBC this winter is: KEEP WARM, KEEP WELL. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? We all know just how important it is to keep warm in winter. Keeping warm can help you stay healthy and safe and can help prevent serious health problems like pneumonia. There are some simple things you can do to keep yourself and your home warm this winter. EAT WELL Eating regular meals will help keep your energy levels up when it is cold STAY ACTIVE Exercise can help to keep you warm.Try to move around at least once an hour. WEAR WARM CLOTHES Wear plenty of thin layers. Put on a hat, scarf, coat and gloves when you go outside. Wear clothes made of wool, cotton or fleecy material. Wear thermal underwear and bed socks at night. HEAT YOUR HOME In the day time heat your main living room to around 18- 21°C and the rest of your house to at least 16°C

Try to keep the temperature above 18°C in your bedroom overnight. Set the heating to come on earlier, rather than turn the thermostat up, so you won’t be cold while you wait for your home to heat up. Never use an electric blanket and a hot water bottle together as you could electrocute yourself. BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR If you have an older neighbour or relative, look out for them to make sure they are safe and well. If the curtains aren’t opened, or there are no lights on there might be some thing wrong. Try knocking on the door to see if there’s an answer. If not, contact a relative or friend who you think may have a key. If you think there are serious grounds for concern, phone 999 Who to contact if you need further help If you are worried about your health or wellbeing or the health and wellbeing of someone you know please call Contact Wrexham Tel: 01978 292066 If you want help to make your home warmer, please call Wrexham Care & Repair Tel: 01978 268120

We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED

However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery.
