your life, your home, your community. It’s quite appropriate that it’s Wimbledon season; I nearly had a John McEnroe moment myself this morning (relevant for those who can remember his outbursts in the 80s and 90s!) I used to cringe at the time, but now when I see old footage of his outbursts I just laugh. They were quite bad, though!

£100 Fords at the Lion Quays On a flying visit to the Lion Quays Hotel Nr. Chirk recently, wife Pam stared in surprise at a car park full of pre-war Ford cars, and called me over to take a look. It proved to be a group of 1935 Ford Model Y and C cars belonging to members of the Ford Model Y & C Register who had been taking part in a tour of North and Mid Wales, arranged by their Spares Officer, Peter Ketchel of Chester, who has organised many such events in this area over the years. We introduced ourselves to the group of members at the bar, and thus followed a lively discussion with such people as Chairman Brian Godfrey, Secretary Bob Wilkinson and magazine editor Sam Roberts, all of whom were bursting with knowledge and full of enthusiasm for their very special Fords. Sam, who had spent 32 years in the army, has also written a book entitled ‘Henry’s Cars for Europe’ which is available via their website- www.fordyandcmodelregister.co.uk or from eBay no. 160981315383. There were several C type 10 h.p. models on display, as well as the Y types, including some with special bodies, but the model that had caused a sensation when it went on sale in 1935 was the Y Popular two-door saloon, which Ford had cleverly reduced the price of by £2, to make it the first £100, four seater saloon car! Morris 6
had built their own £100 car in 1932 but that was only a two-seater, and although the Austin Ruby of the times was a four-seater, it cost £118. So, the two-door Y Popular was an instant sales success. It had a four cylinder 933c.c. side-valve engine which developed 23.4 b.h.p. and was rated at 7.96 h.p. ,with a £6 Road Tax. The top speed was 59 M.P.H. and the touring fuel consumption was 35-45 m.p.g. It had a three-speed gearbox with synchromesh on 2nd. and 3rd.; 6 volt electrics and, disappointingly, suction operated windscreen wipers, which when you accelerated in the rain, slowed them down just when you needed them most. “Mine work perfectly downhill!” joked Sam. I told him about Ray Lambert-Evans, a good friend of mine who had once owned a rather clapped out Ford Y, which was a very temperamental starter. He always carried a little bottle of petrol around with him, which, as a last resort, he poured directly into the Zenith carburettor, before a final turn of the starting handle. If that didn’t work, he sometimes flayed the tyre on the front wheel with it in anger! “Just like Basil Fawlty!” laughed Sam. So we reluctantly left this group of Ys men after such a pleasurable evening- but I hope we meet them again next year!

Dear Residents, Please can we provide you with an update from your Local Policing Team here at Gresford Police Station. Unfortunately, over the past month, numerous vehicle crime incidents have recently occurred in your neighbourhood. Whilst car crime has been continuing to fall throughout North Wales, it does happen. By taking simple steps each time you park your car you can prevent becoming a victim. Car crime is both expensive and inconvenient. Reduce your chances of becoming the next victim: • Park in your garage or driveway and close the gate; • Lock your doors when you park - you’d be surprised how many people don’t; • Don’t leave anything on display - even ‘junk’ can look attractive; • Use a ‘Steering Lock’ - thieves hate these; • Ensure your alarm/immobiliser is working and set each time; • Remove Radios/CD Players if possible; • Remove Sat Nav’s, including cradles and clean the sucker marks off the windscreen with a soft cloth;
• 40% of break-ins involve mobile phones - never leave yours in the car; • If anything has to be left in the car, look at ways of marking them with your postcode etc. Your local Police Station or Neighbourhood Watch can advise. If you see or hear anything suspicious, please contact your local police. In an emergency, always dial 999. For non-urgent matters requiring police assistance or to give us information, please contact North Wales Police Control Room on 101. We look forward to speaking with you all whilst out on our patrols. Kind Regards Wendy, Troy and Dan

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk Grass Cutting: This is a classic example of how we politicians cannot please all the people all of the time. This is proving to be controversial; 50% of people who have been in touch want a reduction in the number of cuts per year in order to protect the wildlife habitats, whilst others say this is unacceptable. My own view is that in certain areas we can reduce the frequency, provided we ensure visibility at road junctions is maintained. The ÂŁ34m cuts will mean that we cannot maintain the current frequency of cutting. Mountain View & Greenfields Play Area. In the past, the Rosset Community Council have expressed a desire to take these over from the County. The stumbling block has always been the County insisting that the Community pay the legal and advertising costs. There is now a real prospect that all similar areas may be offered to Community Councils across the whole of the County Borough. Darland School Students. Previously I reported the problems with students congregating in Lavister, with up to 80 of them causing mayhem to the residents. This was an attempt by students to get ahead of the queue that formed outside the school. I raised this issue with Governors and the
Head who have now met with Arriva and it is hoped that a solution has been found which will involve the provision of an extra service direct from the school. Hopefully peace will be restored. Trevalyn Hall View. The scheme to reduce the parking problems in Trevalyn Hall View that I was promised has been put on the back burner, mainly due to the costs involved in the flood alleviation scheme for Darland and Gamford Lanes junction. Flood Alleviation Scheme. This scheme is scheduled to be completed before the end of September; the preferred option involves digging up from the brook on Gamford Lane, through to the end of the Lane near to the Golf Course, on the section that passes Darland Hall. We are still trying to resolve a number of access issues before the final plan can be confirmed. Plan B in terms of routing is being prepared to ensure that the commitment is identified to resolve the problem. Chester Road. I am hopeful that we can still carry out the remaining resurfacing through Lavister. The timing will be dependent upon the availability of funds. Telephone. Each month I receive messages on my answer phone from people who leave their name and ask me to contact them, but do not leave a telephone number. If you are one of those whose call I have not returned, this is the reason. Please use my mobile 07769706999 or hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk.

PRUNE FLOWERS - Pinch out the growing tips of basket and container plants to encourage them to produce bushy even growth and lots of flowers. Feed lawns, if this hasn’t been done already, and treat any weeds and moss. The clippings can usually be mixed into the compost heap, but remember to discard them for the first few mowings after applying weedkillers.

West Highland Ramblings
A Diary of Douglas the Westie
You would not believe the things that I am asked to do. I recently received a call from a friend in Chester asking if I could help find a new home for a Westie called Lenny. It was clear to me that the poor dog urgently needed rescuing from an owner who named a fine Scottish gent, Lenny. Shortly I will be paying my annual official visit to Scotland. I was invited to participate in the West Highland Games, however I felt that tossing the caber was a somewhat undignified exercise for a gentlemen of my stature and breeding. I have therefore agreed to judge the best bitch in show category. I must remember to get my best kilt and sporran out of hock. Perhaps I should invite Kira to accompany me; the problem is that she keeps trying to route me through Gretna Green. On the subject of journeys, Himself dragged me off for yet another weekend on Ynys Mon. At least this time I was not hauled around graveyards looking for his long lost relatives. Clearly if he were a man of breeding he would have a proper pedigree such as mine. He spent an hour in the Edinburgh Wool shop, obviously trying to

curry favour; I was left in the car trying to work out how to say the longest station name in the world. I did have a laugh at ogogogoch but I have to humour him. I dare not say I think that we Scots have a more refined language. It is quite clear that my renown is spreading throughout the animal kingdom. Most nights Hedgy the hedgehog comes to my window to say hello. Last night he brought another friend with him. I suspect it might have been his lady friend, which got me thinking about a rather prickly subject but as this is a family magazine I will change tack. The other day Striker and I sauntered down to the village green. It was a lovely afternoon; we sat in the park sharing a choc ice from Gwen’s. When Himself found out he was jealous. I had to warn him that if he didn’t stop going on about why I hadn’t bought one for him, I would let everyone know that he was a secret Magnum eater. I must watch what I eat. I have to take care of my teeth, talking of which I really envy my Labrador friend Alfie; he has just had his whitened. I think as a renowned public figure I should be entitled to the same treatment. I wonder if it is available on the DHS! Bye for now, Douglas

INVESTMENTS? KNOW YOUR MARKETS! Investors have experienced a return of market uncertainty in recent weeks. Global equity markets have been subjected since late May to a level of volatility last seen in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 20072008. Following a seemingly continuous rise in equity prices since the beginning of 2013, investors have recently had to get used to very different daily news stories. Equity markets have risen over the past 12 months on signs of recovery in the global economy and central bank action. A slow but definite improvement in the global economy, particularly in the US, is now emerging. Crucially, in the short term, central bankers have taken concerted and radical steps to avert an economic crisis to follow the financial woes of 2008/2009. Trillions of dollars of liquidity has been pumped into developed economies over the last year, as central bankers take unprecedented steps to aid recovery. The equity market correction was triggered by the US Fed chairman Ben Bernanke’s hint at the end of May that there could be a scaling back of the third round of quantitative easing (QE3). Bernanke raised the possibility of a wind-down of the pace, or taper, of the programme on the basis of improved US economic data. Markets, however, heard the work tightening rather than tapering – and equities took a tumble. Despite the recent correction, the fact
remains that equities have had a strong run. QE has driven some investors into higher-risk assets, yet equities still offer good value and income opportunities relative to other asset classes. Bond yields are still low and cash is offering effectively zero returns. With inflation rising to 2.7% in May, Moneyfacts reported last week that not a single standard savings account in the UK is delivering a positive after-tax real return. In these conditions it is easy to be swept up in the daily and weekly shift in market sentiment. Investors should step back and take the long view on both the recent rally and correction in the last few weeks. They need to recognise that pockets of value still exist and remember these can be exploited within a diversified portfolio. In a volatile market it is important to keep focussed on long-term objectives and avoid the destruction of value that can come from reacting to market fluctuations. Markets and investors over the last year have had a phenomenal run. With a shortage of alternatives for growth and income in current markets, equities still offer value. If you would like to discuss how you might have been affected with your investments and pensions, or perhaps consider new opportunities please do give us a call or send us an email.

Posthumous Chief Constable’s Commendation for Wrexham man A popular Wrexham man who sadly passed away in 2008 has been awarded a posthumous Chief Constable’s Commendation for his sensitive media handling following a rail crash. The award for Jon Ratcliffe, Media and Marketing Manager for British Transport Police’s (BTP) North Western Area, was collected by his parents Rob, 61, and Gill, 60, at a ceremony in London on Friday, 15 March. 28-year-old Jon sadly passed away on 24 June 2008 following a short, sudden illness. His parents collected the award from BTP Chief Constable Andrew Trotter during a ceremony held at the British Medical Association building in Tavistock Square, London. Jon led BTP’s media response after the derailment of a Glasgow-bound Virgin train service at Grayrigg, Cumbria, on Friday, 23
February 2007, which saw one woman die and left 20 people injured. BTP undertook a lengthy and complex investigation into the cause of the incident, the judicial proceedings for which concluded in April 2012. Jon’s sensitive handling of media enquiries, including giving a live interview on Sky News to update the public and providing facilities and regular updates for the plethora of journalists and news crews at the scene of the crash, was praised at the time and his actions have now been posthumously commended. Jon’s father Rob, 61-year-old and former Headteacher at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, Gwersyllt, said: “Collecting this prestigious award on behalf of Jon was indeed a great honour. It was a very emotional experience for me, my wife Gill and our two sons, Ian (36) and Dan

(24). We miss Jon so much and occasions like these remind us just what a wonderful man he was who continues to make us very proud. It is comforting for us to know that his colleagues at the British Transport Police not only appreciate the fact that he was an outstanding professional, but also felt it appropriate to honour Jon’s memory with this commendation.” Louise Podlettke (30), Jon’s partner at the time he passed away said, “‘I am so proud that Jon has been given this award. He was very dedicated to his job and I know he worked especially hard during the Grayrigg Incident. I remember at the time he was working almost none stop between Manchester and Cumbria and would return home late at night covered in mud but still with a smile on his face! He would talk none stop about how exciting the job was and how he and all those involved had managed it so well. I’m so happy that he and the others involved are being honoured as they truly deserve it. I’m just sorry that Jon was not there to collect it in person.” Chief Constable Andrew Trotter said: “Jon’s unexpected death at such a young age came as a devastating blow for his departmental colleagues, all officers and staff on the North Western Area and the Force as a whole. He was a consummate media professional and a popular, well-liked and respected member of staff. “His outstanding efforts to ensure media and the public were kept well-informed and updated following the Cumbriarail crash were a credit to his professional expertise and it is with great pride that I was able to posthumously commend his actions.” After graduating from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2003, Jon’s first PR job was with Cheshire Police on leaving University before moving to British Transport Police in April 2006. Jon played football for Darland High School, Yale College , Marford and Gresford, Gresford Athletic, and was a member of the Welsh Schools Under 19 squad.

Housing Tenancy Fraud Wrexham Council has limited availability of homes to let to Council tenants and lettings are prioritised according to housing needs. Fraudulently obtaining Council housing or subletting your home for personal gain uses up precious resources that should be available to those people most in need. Tenancy fraud can include: • Providing incorrect information or false claims about identity or circumstances when applying for housing, • Subletting part or the whole of your property to others, • Failure to use a property as your principal home, • Wrongly claiming a right to ‘succession’ (retention of a tenancy following the death or departure of the tenant), • ‘Key selling’ (leaving a property and passing the keys on in return for money or favour). Any incidents of unlawful subletting and tenancy abuse will be taken serious and 30
will be investigated and early action will be taken if required. We will make the necessary enquiries in connection with any information provided to us in order to verify it. The Council will take legal action to end any tenancy which may have been granted as a result of false or misleading statements made by a tenant(s). The Council may also share information provided to them in order to compare and check details with other departments within Wrexham Council as well as with other organisations such as the Department for Works and Pensions. If you suspect someone of tenancy fraud it is important that you report it to us so that we can investigate the matter fully. You can do this by contacting one of the following: • Contact Fraud team in confidence on 01978 292728 • E-mail: stampoutfraud@wrexham.gov.uk

Here is the chance to shine on the front cover of ‘essentiallyours’. I have decided to give myself a break and hand over the creative frontage to you, just for one month It’s quite straight forward really, all I want you to do is come up with a front cover photograph for the August issue of Essentiallyours. That gives you plenty of time to get your act together to create a masterpiece fit to grace the front of 4000 magazines delivered in your area. Now, here come the technical bits and the very loose rules I have just made up, so concentrate! The photograph MUST be portrait format, not landscape! Which means, it must be long and thin, not short and fat. It must also be a recent, local photograph, as lovely as they are, I don’t want a shot of Big Ben or one of your children on the beach at Bangor! For copyright purposes the image must be your own, please don’t be scanning in a Lord Lichfield from some magazine and passing it off as your own, that would be very naughty 32

Planning Applications The planning application for a shop on the Red Lion Car Park was turned down by the Planning Committee in June. The response from local people was exceptional, and I believe that the councillors were especially convinced by the arguments put forward against it, in particular about access and deliveries. Set in the attractive planned village of Holt, Holt Castle is a ruin on the banks of the River Dee. Following the defeat of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last independent Prince of Wales in 1282, Edward I gave John de Warenne, the 7th Earl of Surrey, the lordships of Bromfield and Yale. To secure his newly gained lands, John built Holt Castle, also known as Lion’s Castle, to control a nearby strategic ford across the River Dee. In 1296 de Warenne, as leader of the English army in Scotland, defeated the Scottish forces at the Battle of Dunbar. Edward I deposed the Scottish King John Balliol and made de Warenne Regent of Scotland. It was a job that only brought him trouble. William Wallace led a revolt and defeated de Warenne and the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge on September 11th 1296. De Warenne was forced to flee the field of battle and make his excuses to Edward I “Longshanks”. During the middle of the 14th century the castle came into the ownership of Richard Fitzalan, the 10th Earl of Arundel; in whose family it remained until the mid 15th century when the 12th Earl died without issue. Richard III granted the castle to Sir William Stanley in 1484, who held it until his execution by Henry VII in 1495, when it again reverted to the Crown. More information on the castle can be found on the Wrexham County Borough website www.wrexham.gov.uk/english/ heritage

Has it been 12 months or longer since you last cleaned your carpets or upholstery? Carpets should be cleaned regularly even if they don’t look dirty. Like you use anti bacterial sprays on your kitchen work surfaces, carpets should be cleaned for the same reason. A clean carpet helps promote a healthy atmosphere free from dirt and bacteria, and more so for people with allergies and asthma.

Goldfinch with deformed beak Lapwing & Chick Š Hugh Linn
Despite miserable Spring weather our local birds have had a reasonably successful breeding season. Some summer migrants, after arriving later than usual, then had to cope with a shortage of insect food before being fit enough to breed. In recent years we have lost some familiar species. Nowadays it is rare to hear a Cuckoo. The only one I heard this year was calling at Honkley on the evening of 1st. June. Spotted Flycatchers, once familiar garden birds, have now virtually disappeared from our area; likewise Turtle Doves, whose gentle crooning was a regular background accompaniment to long hot summer days in years gone by, are restricted to a shrinking population in south east England . Since the 1950s over most of Britain their slot has been filled by Collared Doves. Although Lapwings are in serious decline as breeding birds it is good to report that in our area several pairs have benefited from the weather and reared young in damp grassland. Like many ground nesters Lapwing chicks are vulnerable to mammal and avian predators.
38
Predation has been a problem for Avocet chicks at the RSPB’s Burton Mere Wetlands Reserve on Wirral. Ironically though, our once common Lapwings continue to decline while recently extinct Avocets, despite predation, have made a come-back, are increasing and colonising new areas. A pair of Grey Wagtails raised a family by Rossett weir close to where Little Owls and Buzzards use lamp standards as lookout posts. In nearby gardens Dunnocks, House Sparrows, Starlings, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Robins, Greenfinches, Great and Blue Tits have all been seen feeding young. The most unusual bird in Burton recently has not been some exotic or rare species but a strange-looking Goldfinch. When first spotted at a garden feeder the initial impression was that it had a twig in its beak. Closer examination showed that what looked like a twig was actually an overgrown upper mandible. Slight beak abnormalities are not unusual amongst birds but this individual is particularly striking. Despite its deformity the bird seems quite healthy and feeds without difficulty.

We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine. However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery. We still publish them for those people that read the magazine straight away and do so in the hope that a few people will be able to support the event and attend at short notice. COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Red Lion My first duty in this column has to be a hearty congratulation to the communities of Marford and Gresford whose quiet but determined actions over a number of months culminated in June by immensely helping us as their elected representatives see the Red Lion application turned down. A well focussed and timely summation of the case, a damning Highways report and a full gallery all helped. We could yet face an appeal but my message to all would be let us continue to work together and we can achieve. Working together

I believe the plans for our “Village Improvement” are to be in Essentiallyours this month or next and that there are at long last positive signs of change in this area of the village. PLANTS, CREAM PLANTS CREAM TEAS & PRIZES TEAS & PRIZES Burton and Rossett Horticultural Society held another very successful plant sale and flower show in Rossett Village Hall on the 15 June. They were supported by Rossett WI who provided wonderful cream teas. The show was well attended with a large number of visitors buying locally grown plants both for the flower and vegetable garden. Despite the poor weather the members of the Society and other exhibitors displayed a number of exhibits for the show. The overall winner was Sylvia Morris who also won the competition for the best rose. Well done Sylvia. There were 3 classes where a special prize was awarded for the best exhibit by a child under 12. These were won by Daisy and Otis Clements. Well done to you both. Daisy won the class, “A poster advertising the Horticultural Show in August.”. Here is her winning poster. As Daisy says in her poster, “Everyone is welcome at the August show.”. At our August show, in addition to the many Horticultural classes there are classes for Cookery, Craft, Floral displays and a Junior section: Anyone wishing to exhibit at the show will be extremely welcome. A copy of the Schedule can be obtained by contacting the Show Secretary on 01244 571338 or brhs@rossett.net and will also be in local shops from the end of July.

I don’t usually write to papers but the matter of the Grass Verges has forced me to do so. All the conservation bodies are telling us how our wildlife is in danger and here we are cutting down wildflowers and grass which is good food for the bees. If there are no bees to pollinate our fruit and vegetables there will be no food for us either. One day a leaflet from “Friends of the Earth” dropped through my letterbox. They were asking me to plant and preserve wildflowers. The next day I see men on the A55 cutting the grass and wildflowers behind the crash barrier! If the verges are cut once a year in August after the seed has set the bees will be saved and so will our council taxes. I agree exceptions need to be made for safety. Barbara Cooper-Poole
I was appalled at the article that you published about Rossett GP surgery. This was a one sided misguided opinion that is not a true reflection of the Fantastic work that the Doctors and all supporting staff offer our families. My personal experiences is that the level service they provide is comparable with Yale Private Hospital. To be treated in a caring respectful fashion and very accommodating when booking appointments. Well done and Many Thanks to staff at Rossett Surgery from myself and my family. 1950’s the old ways are the Best. You would be welcome to publish my positive feedback. LAVISTER CHAPEL HOUSE SUPPORT GROUP We held the final garden party at the place where we started our fund raising group for Nightingale House Hospice twenty years ago. It was a beautiful day and we had a crowd of friends and supporters to enjoy the afternoon. Several of the original members in the group were still fulfilling their roles as hostesses and stall holders, all wearing the yellow sashes that highlight the “Go Yellow” theme which the hospice has during the month of June. We also have some new helpers who have come along to see us through to the end of our final year. There was a splendid tea, with strawberries and cream, a mouth-watering cake stall, a raffle and a “Guess the Weight of the Little Girl”, now a three-year-old, previously a babe in arms at the last event to be held at Lavister Chapel. We are pleased to say we raised £750 on the day, and, together with some very generous donations, we will be giving £1,250 to Nightingale House Hospice. Our very last (yes really, our very last event!) will be a concert in Pulford Village Hall on Saturday 19th October at 7.30pm. Jean Fearnal-Williams has consented to give us a rousing finale for Nightingale Hospice.Tickets will be £7.50 to include a supper; these will be on sale from September. Many thanks to all those who have supported this group over the past twenty years. Gill & Tony Tanner Lavister Chapel House Support Group for Nightingale House Hospice Our good friend and neighbour John Whiteley has again grown and sold summer bedding plants in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and has raised the staggering total of £1,169.80! “Job well done” springs to mind…

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT STUDY JULY 2013 The exhibition of the ideas for improving Gresford Village Centre took place at the end of April. It was very well attended, by well over two hundred people, and the comments received were helpful in identifying a preferred option from the several presented, and guiding the final development of the ideas. Two of the options were neck and neck in the community voting, and the subsequent discussions between the Landscape Architects (BCAL) and Image have produced a final plan which accommodates the best principles of both. The aim remains to improve the safety for pedestrians by better definition of the car parking, widening some of the pavements and improving the pedestrian crossing, with the renewal of surfaces and the introduction of trees and seats to provide a more relaxing pedestrian-
friendly environment for the shopper. Along with a report the plan shown will be used in further discussions to raise funds and to negotiate with land owners and the Council to promote the strategy for the improvements : the scale of the work means it will not happen overnight, but the report includes suggestions as to how it could be completed as a series of smaller projects and Image are keen to start the ball rolling. Discussions will thus continue ! Image have also spoken with the Landlord of The Plough with a view to allowing use of the pub car park by casual callers, making it easier to drop in to use the wide range of shops available in the village. More information will be published as and when available, to keep readers up to date with progress.
