your life, your home, your community. Ooooh it’s all happening this month. By the time you’re reading this we’ll know if planning permission has been granted, and whether or not we will be having a retail convenience store at some point in the future on the Red Lion car park at the top of Marford Hill. The planning meeting when the decision will be made is taking place on Monday 3rd June, so I’m afraid it’s too late to turn up if you have an interest in this, but we’ll keep you posted.
magazine has also pointed out some issues from a wildlife perspective that may well give the council a better excuse to avoid doing it than the ones they came up with! Anyway see what you think and if you would like to add your own two penneth worth then please get in touch. And we’re half way through the year already despite it still feeling like winter! Welcome to Heather and the team who have taken over the Golden Grove. I know it’s been open and closed a few times since last summer, but Heather has taken it over on a full time basis now and officially opened at the beginning of May so we’d like to wish her well.
We have also recently been sent a couple of letters from local residents airing their views on local services that they would like to share with you all. The one about the overgrown state of our villages and And here’s hoping for some warmer public areas has developed into more weather very soon! than the initial observation from a well meaning local resident to request the All the best, Jill council to get their finger out. West Highland Ramblings
A Diary of Douglas the Westie
What a month May has been, the worst in living memory, all I seem to get is wet walks, wet walks, followed by a bath, what affect this is having on my fur I do not know. If only we could have just a little bit of sun. I get no sympathy from himself, he says that as I am a West Highland Terrier I should enjoy wet and windy weather because it will remind me of my roots. I wouldn’t mind but the West Highlands have had a lovely May, ah well I guess I shall just have to grin and bear it. Talking of Himself , he has got a new mobile phone, he calls it his Sam sung, it seems to me to be a a daft name to call a phone, just imagine me calling my phone. Kira bark, well perhaps not, that sounds far too Welsh . On the subject of walks I was recently stopped and asked for my autograph by a local admirer, I shall have to develop a rather stylish signature appropriate for a famous author, who knows one day it might become a collectors piece. Last month I was telling you about all the rude remarks about my waist line, I can now tell you that I am the new

lithe Douglas. I was sent to Boot Camp, which was a days regime with Striker, a strict diet, no treaties, well just one and a route march through Burton. My diet was called a pawcity diet, which means very small pawtions. Although I still don’t do mornings, I can be seen running through the fields in the early evening, which is not bad for a pensioner. Yes I know that you are all surprised to hear me use the word pensioner. Now that I am nine and a half I have reached the age of human retirement. I have just sent off to Wrexham Council for my Bus Pass. I can’t wait to jump on one of those new Aviva double decked buses with their leather seats. My favourite position is right at the front on the top deck, from this vantage point I can acknowledge all my admirers as I ride through the village and beyond. It has been an interesting month in terms of meeting new admirers, there is Tallulah, what a beautiful name, obviously named after the famous actress. Then there is Toby, he’s a very lively Spaniel/Poodle cross, I think they are called Spoodles they all seem somewhat in awe of me. Ah well it will soon be summer, I hope. Bye for now, Douglas.

The Golden Grove has recently reopened. The new tenants are Heather and Frank Davis who have many years’ experience in the licensing trade. They made the decision to take on the Golden Grove after visiting one winter’s evening and seeing the potential which the beautiful premises have to offer, with the open fires and beautiful grounds. The chef is Russell Smith - a local guy who has been head-hunted from Abersoch after Heather and Frank saw him at the local food festivals there on one of their many visits. The front of house manager is Jason Taylor, who himself has many years of operating successful restaurants. The staff are all from the local area and offer a warm, friendly welcome. The menu has a variety of dishes, all of which are homemade and incorporate local
produce, including seafood from the local coastal areas. There are mouth-watering desserts, the “Peppered Pineapple” being one of the favourites along with the homemade profiteroles. Also on the menu is the unique dining experience of the Black Rocks, whereby you cook your meal on the volcanic rock at your table. This allows you to cook your meat and fish to your liking, adding to the theatre and quality of your dining experience. Once tried you will be back for more! The Golden Grove is also available for all occasions, where all your needs will be catered for - relieving you of all the stress and making your day one to remember. We all look forward to seeing you soon at The Golden Grove.

Come and meet a personality from the 1930s at Chirk Castle Not only have the rooms of Chirk Castle’s East Wing been recreated as they might have appeared sometime during the 1920s & 30s, but one of the staff who would have worked here has also returned.
from the script, in front of other visitors. Rehearsals take place in our ancient Chapel, which has also played host to performances from our American friends George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
‘Hello. May I introduce myself? My name is Gareth Gilbanks and it is my pleasure to act as tutor to the younger children of Lord & Lady Howard de Walden at Chirk Castle.
‘These pantomime rehearsals have proved enormously popular to watch and to perform. It’s amazing how many budding actors we have amongst our many thousands of visitors.
‘When you visit the castle you may find me in the Bow Room, a magnificently furnished salon which contains many works of art and fine antiques. This room also offers panoramic views over the stately castle gardens, the Welsh border and into Shropshire, Cheshire and beyond.
‘Our Guest Book shows that Chirk Castle has been visited by such great 20th Century notables as George Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling and even a stylish American lady named Wallace Simpson. The list is very lengthy. Why don’t you come and see us too?
‘You will receive a very warm welcome as you relax in the sumptuous furniture and listen to the latest tunes of the 1930s. You may choose to while away the time by looking through our photograph album which contains countless photos of Lord Howard de Walden…often dressed in ‘medieval’ armour.
‘From the 17th Century Chirk Castle was transformed into a fashionable and luxurious family home. We can still see the changing fashions of interior design – from 17th Century wooden panelling, the elegance and balance of the 18th century to the return of gothic themes during the times of Queen Victoria.
‘I spend part of each day preparing and presenting rehearsals for one of Lord Howard de Walden’s own pantomimes – which are produced to show off the children’s acting talents and entertain the many guests who visit. I am currently working on ‘The Reluctant Dragon’. Younger visitors are actively encouraged to dress up and perform, 8
‘I look forward to meeting you.’ Mr Gilbanks is portrayed by Huw Sayer and can be met in the Bow Drawing Room of Chirk Castle’s East Wing most days until the end of October. © National Trust Images.

We keep hearing that loneliness and social isolation is an increasing problem for older people. In rural areas, the problems with a lack of transport can make things a whole lot worse. The national Charity Contact the Elderly and the Penley Rainbow Centre are working together to tackle the problem. They are setting up a brand new friendship group. The group will take out elderly guests for monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties. Each month they will visit the home of a different volunteer host.
If you like an excuse to bake, you would love being a host. You only need to do it once a year, so it fits in well with work and family. All that’s needed to host is a downstairs loo, not too many steps and a big teapot!
Liz Morgan, East Wales Development Officer says, “It is such a simple idea, but it makes a huge difference to people. Some of the guests might not see anyone else in the meantime, so a monthly tea party can make a world of difference.”
If you want to help make a difference, now is the time to contact us. Telephone Rebecca Cupit on 01948 830730 or Liz Morgan of Contact the Elderly on 01938 810635. Or email elizabeth.morgan@ contact-the-elderly.org.uk.
10
Or if you don’t want to host, you might like to help with the driving, picking up the older guests and going along with them to enjoy the tea, then taking them home safely afterwards. A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Wren with nest material Common Sandpiper © Hugh Linn
Wrens are remarkable birds. Although tiny, measuring less than four inches from bill to tail (which accounts for one third of their length) and weighing a mere 10 grammes, they are tough creatures with a wide distribution, not only throughout the British Isles but also, represented by various geographical races, in a variety of habitats from sea level up to altitudes of 3,000 feet across the northern hemisphere as far east as Japan and over to North America where they are known as Winter Wrens. Although their small size makes them vulnerable during prolonged cold weather they may at times be our most numerous native birds. Success in making up for lost numbers is helped by one aspect of their breeding biology.Wrens are polygamous. The ability of a male to attract mates is enhanced by an incredibly loud song, disproportionate in volume to the size of the singer, combined with the well-nigh irresistible offer of a nest ready for instant occupation. Cock Wrens are almost compulsive builders. They make nests all year round. In winter these cock’s nests are regularly
12
shared as communal roosts. In Spring the only adaptation required from the hen is a feather lining. One of this month’s photographs shows a cock Wren carrying a beakful of moss to a nest completed in less than a week. Within 24 hours he was joined by a female. By the time this magazine appears in print we may have some news! The hybrid Shelducks mentioned in last month’s article were replaced in May by a pair of Common Shelducks which often appear on inland waters at this time of the year. Sites like Llay Pool are attractive to migratory birds. This Spring 6 wader species have spent time there - Ringed and Little Plovers, Lapwings, Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Common Sandpipers. Tree Pipits and Redstarts on passage have been recorded locally. Two sightings of Hobbies at Belgrave and Rossett are likely to refer to migrants although in 2011 a pair of these elegant falcons bred successfully at a site in East Clwyd.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Maes-Y-Pant During May I was happy to accompany a couple of my fellow MYPAG directors in a walk in our community quarry with our Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths. She really enjoyed herself and took in the views of North Wales and Merseyside from our high viewpoint. Previous visits that I helped to arrange were for Ian Lucas MP and Dr Helen Paterson, Wrexham Council’s Chief Executive. They have all admired what this community has achieved with the project and I am hoping one or all can join us at our event in June. Joint Surgery with Lesley Griffiths A M This was certainly busier than my snowbound non-surgery in March and what came over was the sense of place that a number of those who came to see us have for this village. It is a sharing of that feeling which got me involved in local government. However, with resources being squeezed, this is likely to get harder. New ways of working and the questioning of previous priorities are likely. As we progress along the rocky path of “reshaping services”, there will be consultation on the options and I will endeavour to keep you informed. Buses and Bus Shelters A constituent contacted me about the doubledecker service and whilst I may not agree with every point, her letter has been forwarded to Arriva. The current bee in my own bonnet is the electronic information signs that do not work. My enquiries have elicited that there is a technical problem with some of these. The North East Wales transport consortium TAITH is looking at the issue and I shall continue to press Wrexham’s representatives concerning solutions.

Every few months I undertake an “environmental audit” with Daniel our PCSO and staff from Streetscene in the council. We have highlighted blocked gullies, weeds on the highways and some damaged street furniture. Some weeds are at the edge of properties and I will try and have a polite word but this is an area where we can all help. I have also requested a campaign on anti-dog fouling and littering. This may lead to enforcement action, but only if you do the act In the meantime, if you have concerns about the or allow it to be done!

l o o h c S Darland News
At Darland High School, summer finds both Years 10 and 11 revising hard for their exams which commence shortly before half term. Meanwhile, the rest of the school is as active as ever on our sports fields and on our various extra curricular activities. Our eco group has been busy patrolling the site, switching off lights, placing ‘Hippo bags’ in toilet cisterns, planting vegetables in our garden and picking up litter, to ensure that we are fully prepared for the arrival of the ‘Green Flag’ assessor later this summer. We are really pleased with the use to which the new tennis courts is being put, both from our students and from members of the public at weekends and evenings. Rossett Tennis Club has furnished the courts with brand new nets, ensuring a really professional look! Rossett residents will no doubt be aware that there has been an increase in the number of students choosing to travel to and from school on the service (Arriva)
buses. Although this method of transport has always been the choice of many who live outside the Darland catchment, the recent decision by the Council (prompted by a Welsh government directive) to raise the prices on the dedicated ‘school buses’, has led to more students travelling by Arriva. You will no doubt agree with me that it is far from satisfactory to have 50 – 60 students waiting at bus stops on the Chester road and we are doing all we can to ensure that we achieve an appropriate level of supervision. I am also in communication with both Arriva and the Council to see what we can do to alleviate this situation. Our students have been reminded of the responsibility they have to conduct themselves in a manner befitting Darland students and as always, I appeal to the community to contact me directly should they have any concerns with the behaviour of our students. This was where the pipe originally routed to. Missing Speed Hump. I have been contacted by several residents concerned that one of the speed humps on the approach to the 20 mph limit on Chester Road was not replaced following resurfacing. It will be done asap. Hedge Cutting. I make my annual plea to owners of hedges and trees that overhang and obstruct pavements to keep them well cut back. Every year I get numerous complaints about this problem. The responsibility is on the owners of the property and not the Council. The fact that people who have any disability and mothers pushing prams are forced into the road is unacceptable. In some cases the Council write to owners and give them 14 days to get the work done, if not the Council do the work and recharge it. All of which is unnecessary.
Telephone. Each month I receive messages on my answer phone from people who leave their name and ask me to contact them, but do not leave a telephone number. gardeningtips This is a rewarding month in the garden as you start to see the fruits of your labours. Borders come alive with colour and the vegetable patch is full of fresh pickings. Flower garden - Potted lilies will be growing quickly now and as their flowers start developing they will need some support. Push several canes into the compost around the edge of the pot, linking them up with string to provide stability. If border lilies are not supported by neighbouring plants, use stakes around these too. Roses - Sprinkle rose fertiliser around roots to encourage strong growth and a good flower display. Water in if rain does not fall within a couple of weeks or hoe into the soil, taking care not to harm the roots. Bearded Iris - Once irises have finished flowering in June, congested clumps can be lifted, divided and replanted. Reduce the leaf area by half and replant so that the rhizomes rest at the soil surface. Primulas - Dig up large clumps now and divide into individual plants, each with leaves and roots. Replant into newly prepared soil. Summer bedding plants - Plant 22
out tender bedding plants once all danger of frost has passed. If they have been grown in the greenhouse, harden off in a cold frame for a few days before planting out. Pots and trays of bedding plants can be placed on the patio during the day, but moved back under cover at night. Give them a boost by watering them in with liquid fertiliser. Lupins and early perennials Remember to cut off the old flower stems before they start to set seed. This will tidy the appearance of the plant but as an added bonus may even encourage a second flush of flowers. Also keep a watchful eye out for lupin aphids which should be controlled with an insecticide if necessary. Pruning shrubs - Many springflowering shrubs can be pruned as soon as their flowers have started to fade. Any shoots that have carried flowers can be cut back, shortening them to shape the shrub and control its size and vigour. Forsythia can grow large and ungainly if left to its own devices, so prune to give the shrub a definite shape and form. This and other shrubs, such as Berberis darwinnii, are sometimes grown as hedges, so can be pruned to give a more formal structure.

ADD A LITTLE CERTAINTY TO YOUR FUTURE We live in economically-challenged times. The threat of a double-dip recession, rising unemployment, and a second global banking crisis have left many people with less money in their pocket to spend. Many parents will have some level of life cover in place, typically enough to pay off their mortgage should the unthinkable happen, but protecting your family is more than buying a simple life insurance policy. The harsh and sad fact is that we are very likely to be close to someone who gets a serious illness. Take cancer, for instance. According to Macmillan, the cancer charity, one in every three of us will be diagnosed with cancer and one-third will be below the age of 65 (Source: www.macmillan.org.uk, October 2012). What’s more, every year 275,000 people suffer a heart attack, of which some 155,000 of those people will survive (Source: www. netdoctor.co.uk, August 2012). Taking out a critical illness policy can offer some financial reassurance. These policies promise to pay out a lump sum not when you die but on diagnosis of a terminal or other debilitating condition, which cover many conditions including cancer, a stroke, heart attack, kidney failure or multiple sclerosis. Critical illness cover can be more complex than some other financial products.
Consumers often fail to understand what they are covered for and, more importantly, what is not covered, so it pays to get expert help before signing on the dotted line. Sickness benefits can vary substantially. If you are off work due to sickness your long term incapacity benefit will be £99.15, based on 2012/13 levels. An income protection policy is worth serious consideration as it is designed to pay out a monthly sum of money until you die, or more optimistically you reach retirement, return to work or recover from the illness. For example, a 20 year old taking a plan out with a retirement age of 65, who has an accident just after the plan, is issued and can never work again, would get a monthly payout for 45 years. Therefore a plan with an income benefit of, say £1,000 per month could potentially pay out a total of £540,000. Many people think of financial planning as creating wealth. It is, but it is also about protecting what you already have. These are nervous times, which are riddled with uncertainties. With a little bit of thinking - and some expert guidance - you can add some certainty to your financial future.

Local business fighting back Established local company, Johnstown Tyres of Ruabon, was left devastated after two tons of snow caused the roof of the business premisis to collapse. Owner Bryan Hurst has worked around the clock to get his 13 year strong business back up and running. “This has been an absolute nightmare for me. I have been trading for 13 years. I’ve been left gobsmacked, the building looked like it had been hit by something very big,” said Bryan. “I own Johnstown and Ruabon Tyres and I’m a tenant of the site. The collapse happened when we had the bad snowfall in late March. Snow much snow fell in such a short space of time. “An insurance assessor has been to take a look and estimates that when frozen, the snow that did the damage would weigh about two tons.”
The landlord of the damaged building plan to demolish, then rebuild it. With assistance from his landlord Bryan has been able to move to new premises, still on Gardden Industrial Estate. The new building is much larger and has a better position on the industrial estate. “We’ve got much more space here, we’ve created a nice comfortable waiting room for customers, which is ideal if they’ve just popped in to get their tyres check or one of our hand car washes. “It’s taken a while and a few sleepless nights, but we’re all settling in now and our regular customers have started to come back.” said Bryan. The full cost of the damage still isn’t known, but Johnstown Tyres is up and running, bigger, better and stronger than ever before.

SUPERSIZE PYLONS PROPOSED FOR LOCAL AREA
Wrexham Power Limited (WPL) are proposing to build a large gas fired power station on the edge of Wrexham Industrial Estate. They are a property developer from Birmingham with parent company registered in Bermuda. They are not a utility company.
Claims of job opportunities are dubious– many of these jobs are highly specialised and are likely to be brought in from elsewhere.
The power station proposals suggest benefits which may not actually be delivered – see our objections. For more information on the proposals please go to Wrexham Power ‘s website www.wrexham-power.com. But don’t you believe all you read!!
Pollution could affect the industrial estate and local villages including Holt and Farndon.
The electricity will be generated and will need to be transported to the Legacy Substation by means of 400kv SUPERSIZE 50 METRE HIGH TOWER PYLONS (similar to those you see on the M56 towards Runcorn). These may ruin a massive swathe of rural countryside from Bowling Bank, Isycoed, Pickhill, Bangor on Dee, Marchwiel, Crosslanes, Sontley, Eyton to Rhosytllen. REASONS TO OBJECT: Whilst the UK needs more power, there is no genuine need for a scheme of this size in Wrexham area (N Wales already produces more power than it uses – this power station will fill the deficit of power in the South of England at the expense of our environment) There are better locations for such a development in the UK such as the many recently closed nuclear, coal and oil plants which have pylons, etc. in place already. There is no proposal for a sub-station on the Wrexham Industrial Estate and therefore the claims that it will benefit the Estate by providing extra power appear flawed. Wrexham Power are claiming the possibility of sales of heat but have the wrong plant and no infrastructure, This is “Greenwash” to mislead us. 48
The power station would be a huge ‘eye sore’ from rural locations including the Cheshire approaches to Wrexham.
This is not a sustainable or low carbon proposal when it could and should be. It will produce 2.5 million tonnes per year of carbon which will need to be stored underground or out to sea . There are better options for the Industrial Estate that could genuinely achieve the benefits with no requirement to spoil our environment with the proposed pylons, e.g. a much smaller sustainable low carbon energy efficient plant. ‘FRACKING’ further down the line ? A formal consultation is due to start soon and as the project is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, the planning consent required is a Development Consent Order. Wrexham Power Limited’s Development Consent Order application will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate, the government agency responsible for receiving such applications. It will examine the application publicly and make a recommendation the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change as to whether to approve the application. It is the Secretary of State who will ultimately grant consent. All interested parties, including local residents and Wrexham County Borough Council, will have opportunities to submit their views during the consultation. However this consultation is short so we are starting our objections NOW, focusing mainly on the Power company at this stage.

Sticky slow-roast belly of pork Serves 6. Ingredients: 1.3kg piece pork belly, boned, rind left on and scored (ask us to do this for you) 2 tsp sunflower oil 1 tsp crushed white peppercorns 3 large onions, sliced 2-3 tbsp clear honey 2 tsp ground cumin 1 red chilli - de-seeded and chopped How it’s done: 1: H eat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Lay the pork, skin-side up, on a rack in a roasting tin. Trickle with a little oil, then lightly press on the crushed peppercorns and a sprinkling of coarse sea salt. Place in the oven, then cook for 1hr. Remove from the oven and baste with the juices. Continue to cook for a further 1½ hrs, basting every 20 mins. 2: P ut the sliced onions in the roasting tin under the pork. Mix the honey together with the cumin and chilli, brush it over the pork, then increase the oven to 200C/fan 180C/ gas 6. Cook for a further 30-40 mins, basting occasionally, until caramelised with a rich, golden glaze over the pork. Once cooked and tender, remove pork from the oven, leave to rest for 10-15 mins. 3: While the pork is resting, heat the tin on the stove with the onions, adding 2 tbsp water. This will lift any residue from the pan, creating a moist cooking liquor. Season the onions with salt and pepper, then divide between 6 plates. Carve into 6 portions, then serve on top of the onions. Serve with mash and vegetables.

Dear Editor,
When I was a child in the 1950s the doctor’s waiting room was in the front room of a house. In Rossett not much has changed except that the waiting room is a lot smaller, so patients sit even closer to share their germs. It is in fact so small that a receptionist told me they have to play musack to cover the doctors’ conversations with patients, which can otherwise be heard through the door. So whether you go in with a bad head or a terminal condition, you have to sit through pop music - and come out with a bad head if you didn’t have one when you went in.
Every other GP practice I know moved into proper premises years ago – as the Alyn practice did in Llay and Gresford. In other practices I know which have more than one surgery you can also make an appointment in whichever has a slot free. Try to get an appointment in Llay or Gresford instead of Rossett, however, and the answer’s no. We have to get ourselves 5 miles to Wrexham for blood tests, but popping up the hill to Llay or Gresford is a no-no. We’re registered in Rossett and that’s that.
When I was once sent to Llay when Rossett was closed, the doctor had full access to my records, so that cannot be the problem. The ladies in Llay reception also greeted me with a smile which is as rare as hens’ teeth in Rossett – possibly because the Rossett receptionists are as fed up with the premises as we are. So how come Rossett is stuck in the 1950s, and can we hope for a change before the musack drives some of us to terminal apoplexy? Name & address supplied.

Dear Sir, I am appalled that the Lavister/Rossett area is being allowed to look an absolute disgrace. The grass and weeds along the borders of the roads (Chester Road B5445 is a good example) and many roundabouts look particularly unsightly as do overgrown hedges and poor road surfaces. The condition of the pavement next to the vets, for example, is unbelievably poor and has done for a number of years. No maintenance or upkeep of the area exists. I recently took a holiday to a bankrupt country - Spain - and the area (Alicante) was immaculate. They obviously take pride in their region. The grass is now so long in Lavister that the sign is almost covered - this is allowed to happen every year. Please refer to attached picture which was taken today 23/05/13). This is simply unacceptable and blaming wet weather is not an excuse. Week after week passes by without any maintenance action being taken. Please accept that it is useless to cut the grass once and then leave it again to grow to an unacceptable height. It needs to be maintained on a regular basis. There appears to be no pride in our area by the council. I look forward to receiving your response to my concerns. Regards, Keith Oare MSc CEng MIMechE

PROTECT OUR GRASS VERGES NWWT members have just developed the petition tim.towers@ denbighshire.gov.uk : Stop the early cutting of grass verges till the wild flowers have seeded on Change.org. For those of you who don’t live in the county - the County Council, have cut all the wildflowers including cowslips - a protected species - primroses, violets, bluebells, daffodils etc etc from the road verges even though the grass is not a safety hazard. This is in contravention to their previous policy which was to cut once a year in August when the flowers had set their seed. It is also in contravention to the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the NERC Act 2006. Not only have they destroyed the chances that these plants can regenerate - some of them are protected species - but they have also destroyed miles of habitat and nectar for endangered pollinating insects such as bees. So we want to register our deep concern and stop it happening again next year.
Dear Mr Oare, I refer to your e-mail correspondence of 23rd May 2013 to Cllr Hugh Jones, a copy of which has been forwarded for my attention. Our current grass cutting standards are derived around the available resources and budget which enables 2 cuts per annum for all highways roadside verges. The first cut commences during May and takes approximately 5 weeks to cut the qualifying verges throughout the whole County Borough. Highway verge grass cutting commenced in the Burton area approximately 10 days ago and the length of verge in question is due to be cut as part of this programme in the coming week. The footway outside the veterinary surgery on the B5445 Chester Road has been identified as deteriorating considerably following the last winter period and as such has been included in our footway improvement programme for the current financial year. The overgrowth indicated in your attached photograph is due to the rapid growth of the cow parsley which is evident in many roadside verges at present. This appears to be as a result of the ideal growing conditions we have been subject to following the late winter spell. As previously stated this section of verge is due to receive attention during the next couple of days as part of our verge grass cutting programme. We are always striving to maintain acceptable standards within a limited available budget and resources and it is regrettable that these standards are sometimes perceived as unacceptable. However, we are constantly looking to improve our services and any issues raised by stakeholders are viewed with this in mind. Should you wish to discuss any issues in respect of the above I can be contacted on 01978 729730 and will be pleased to advise. Yours sincerely, Paul Fairclough
