your life, your home, your community. What kind of world do we live in? The opportunities that are available to us these days is truly amazing. The internet with the facility to speak to people all over the world in seconds and so cost effectively, and the fact that you can up sticks and go and live in another European country at the drop of a hat. Whether or not you condone these things you have to admit it’s impressive.
On the darker side of the world we live in, and in the news recently was the young solider, Lee Rigby, in Woolwich who was brutally killed on the street, in broad daylight. We hear of random attacks like this more times than I care to imagine and sometimes it’s for reasons such as people proving themselves to be accepted into gangs, religion, politics. The mind boggles.
The world has really been opened up to us, but is it a good thing? Populations have increased over the years, and there is now so much of everything, I’m just confused by it all if I’m honest. I can’t say I’ve embraced Facebook and twitter, but do love my mobile phone so I can receive calls and messages on the move. I remember reading an article in a newspaper and the guy writing the article was frustrated by all the emails he gets from companies that pretend to know him, address him by his first name and ask how he is today. Really made me chuckle as that’s something that annoys me, millions of emails from large companies trying to flog me their products, using my name as if they know me.
This didn’t happen years ago when our parents were young. What a shame we can’t have that old fashioned world with its more traditional values, a safer world, and the technology of today. Is it possible to have a compromise like this that would work?

In my eyes that’s one of the beauties of village life, and living in an area like ours, we are blessed that we are relatively still village like and long may it continue!

Local business fighting back Established local company, Johnstown Tyres of Ruabon, was left devastated after two tons of snow caused the roof of the business premisis to collapse. Owner Bryan Hurst has worked around the clock to get his 13 year strong business back up and running. “This has been an absolute nightmare for me. I have been trading for 13 years. I’ve been left gobsmacked, the building looked like it had been hit by something very big,” said Bryan. “I own Johnstown and Ruabon Tyres and I’m a tenant of the site. The collapse happened when we had the bad snowfall in late March. Snow much snow fell in such a short space of time. “An insurance assessor has been to take a look and estimates that when frozen, the snow that did the damage would weigh about two tons.”
The landlord of the damaged building plan to demolish, then rebuild it. With assistance from his landlord Bryan has been able to move to new premises, still on Gardden Industrial Estate. The new building is much larger and has a better position on the industrial estate. “We’ve got much more space here, we’ve created a nice comfortable waiting room for customers, which is ideal if they’ve just popped in to get their tyres check or one of our hand car washes. “It’s taken a while and a few sleepless nights, but we’re all settling in now and our regular customers have started to come back.” said Bryan. The full cost of the damage still isn’t known, but Johnstown Tyres is up and running, bigger, better and stronger than ever before.

Recipe of the month Creamy Swedish meatballs
Serves 4. Ingredients: 1 onion , finely chopped 450g minced pork (or lamb) 1 egg yolk 3 sprigs dill , finely chopped 1 tbsp vegetable oil 3-4 tbsp soured cream How it’s done: 1. M ix together the onion, pork, egg yolk and half the dill in a bowl. Lightly wet your hands, then shape the mixture into 12 balls, each about the size of golf ball. 2. H eat the oil in a large frying pan. Tip in the meatballs and fry, turning often, for about 12-15 mins until golden all over. Mix together sour cream and remaining dill, then spoon over the meatballs. Serve with mashed potato or tagliatelle. Prefer lamb? Minced lamb will work just as well here if you fancy a change from pork. We can mince the lamb for you at the farm shop.
We have the most amazing selection of local, quality meat at the farm shop. We also have a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and bedding plants! Shop local. You know it makes sense.

North Wales Police are asking everyone to be extra vigilant in the future as Marchwiel seems to have been hit rather badly with burglaries recently. A house, a vehicle and a few sheds have been targeted so we need to look out for each other and remember if you see anything suspicious at all, do not hesitate to ring 101 or 999 for emergencies. We have a number of Watch Schemes in place which I am trying to get everyone to join. The OWL (Online Watch Link) is a good tool to keep you informed of what is going on. It operates by helping communities prevent and detect crime, support one another and be more aware of what is occurring in your area. Using modern technology and communication this makes life easier and simpler for all to be involved. As it is interactive it will allow you to send any messages back just as easy. Messages including crime alerts and timely crime prevention advice, are sent out by the OWL Administrator to OWL users and Neighbourhood Watch members, in an instant, sometimes within half an hour of a crime occurring. The system allows messages to be received by telephone, fax, email, mobile phone, flyers or letter so people who do not have access to the internet do not miss out. It is a highly effective and efficient way to get important information out. The scheme if FREE to join and your details will be held on a secure database within a police station and will not
be passed to any other party. All data will be held with Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Association in connection to OWL. To join you can either contact me, details below or get in touch with Flintshire OWL Admin at the Neighbourhood Watch Office, Mold Police Station, King Street, MOLD CH7 1EF also via email – enquiries@fnwa.org.uk This office also runs other Watch Schemes such as Farm Watch / Horse Watch / Church Watch / Pub Watch / School Watch etc. – So get in touch now and fill your forms in asap. I have forms I can print out or e mail to you but also our County Councillor John Pritchard and myself will soon be delivering these forms together with other information concerning the Environmental Day John has organised for Friday 31st May 2103. So help us to help you by being responsible for your own property and belongings. More news later on in the magazine. Regards, Lynne.

petadvice LUNGWORM (Angiostrongylus vasorum) Infection of dogs with this parasite can prove fatal and is transmitted by a very common garden pest. This has become a widespread threat in the UK, due to climate changes and movement of dogs and foxes around the country. Several suspected cases have recently been seen in this area at our surgeries. Young dogs are most commonly infected due to their inquisitive nature. Dogs become infected through eating slugs, snails and even frogs which are infected with the larvae of the parasite. Some dogs will actively eat slugs and snails whereas others may inadvertently swallow small ones when drinking from outdoor water bowls, eating grass, playing with toys that have been left out in the garden and rummaging through undergrowth. Adult worms are found in the heart and lung blood vessels of the dog/fox, they lay eggs which hatch into larvae and pass into the airways of the lung. The larvae are then coughed up and swallowed and passed out in the dog’s faeces. Slugs and snails then swallow these larvae, they in turn are swallowed by the dog. Thus the life cycle continues.
12
An infected dog can show a number of quite different symptoms; • Breathing problems, coughing and tiring more easily • Poor blood clotting leading to excessive bleeding from minor wounds, nose bleeds and anaemia • Behavioural changes, fits, spinal pain, weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea Treatment and prevention is relatively simple using a spot on product which additionally protects your dog against fleas and roundworms. Protection using this product lasts for one month. We would highly recommend the use of this product regularly throughout the risk periods when slugs and snails are most prolific, particularly if we have another very wet summer........

by Miss Viv Lavis-Jones in collaboration with Terry Davies
In 1919 the parish council requested the GPO to put a public telephone in the Bangor post office and a call office was installed in 1920 with the number Bangor-on-Dee 1. The GPO erected an automated telephone exchange in Whitchurch Road and it opened on 15th April 1931 complete with a UAX5 Unit Automatic Exchange System. One of the familiar red public phone box, known as the K6, was installed outside. There used to be another three red phone kiosks in Bangor: one opposite Ty Graig by the council houses, one at the bottom of Raggs Hill and one at the racecourse. These were removed when the new style kiosks were produced in the 1908s and were not replaced. The telephone exchange was serviced by a technical officer or linesman called Geof Dodd, who together with trainees used to service the little automatic exchanges of Bangor, Overton and Dutton Diffeth in his designated area. One of these trainees,Terry Davies of Overton Road, fondly remembers travelling around the exchanges in the GPO van with Geof. He less fondly remembers how cold these little buildings were with their lack of toilet facilities! In the early days, to make a long distance phone call you had to lift up the receiver and dial ‘0’ to speak to the operator to be put through to the number required. Bangor was attached to Ellesmere Manual Exchange in the early days until Wrexham’s Manual Exchange tool over. In 1953 18
the Bangor exchange was updated to a TXE2 system in a new electronic telephone exchange building and moved to Station Road. Now you can dial 780 in front of the old number and dial to any country bypassing the operator. Isn’t progress wonderful! The K6 phone box was replaced by the K8 box in 1968, still red, but now made of fibreglass instead of metal, with larger glass panels. After the GPO was privatised the new company, British Telecom, re-branded everything and they replaced them with a new, yellow glass phone box in 1985 - the KX. There was an instant outcry and the residents in many places started petitions and mounted campaigns for the reinstatement of the old red box - the one they never knew they loved so much until it was taken away! When the old exchange was sold c1989, thought to be for £15,000, the new style phone box was moved to its present position in Station Road. Terry was able to buy one of the red kiosks as had Geof Dodd, and had installed it in his garden. When it was spotted he thought he was in imminent danger of being lynched by a mob shouting “Give us our red phone box, it’s ours!” until he persuaded then he had bought it in a fair sale! Incidentally there is yet another red phone box in the rear lobby of the Buck House Hotel.

ADD A LITTLE CERTAINTY TO YOUR FUTURE We live in economically-challenged times. The threat of a double-dip recession, rising unemployment, and a second global banking crisis have left many people with less money in their pocket to spend. Many parents will have some level of life cover in place, typically enough to pay off their mortgage should the unthinkable happen, but protecting your family is more than buying a simple life insurance policy. The harsh and sad fact is that we are very likely to be close to someone who gets a serious illness. Take cancer, for instance. According to Macmillan, the cancer charity, one in every three of us will be diagnosed with cancer and one-third will be below the age of 65 (Source: www.macmillan.org.uk, October 2012). What’s more, every year 275,000 people suffer a heart attack, of which some 155,000 of those people will survive (Source: www. netdoctor.co.uk, August 2012). Taking out a critical illness policy can offer some financial reassurance. These policies promise to pay out a lump sum not when you die but on diagnosis of a terminal or other debilitating condition, which cover many conditions including cancer, a stroke, heart attack, kidney failure or multiple sclerosis. Critical illness cover can be more complex than some other financial products.
Consumers often fail to understand what they are covered for and, more importantly, what is not covered, so it pays to get expert help before signing on the dotted line. Sickness benefits can vary substantially. If you are off work due to sickness your long term incapacity benefit will be £99.15, based on 2012/13 levels. An income protection policy is worth serious consideration as it is designed to pay out a monthly sum of money until you die, or more optimistically you reach retirement, return to work or recover from the illness. For example, a 20 year old taking a plan out with a retirement age of 65, who has an accident just after the plan, is issued and can never work again, would get a monthly payout for 45 years. Therefore a plan with an income benefit of, say £1,000 per month could potentially pay out a total of £540,000. Many people think of financial planning as creating wealth. It is, but it is also about protecting what you already have. These are nervous times, which are riddled with uncertainties. With a little bit of thinking - and some expert guidance - you can add some certainty to your financial future.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. I recently organised a Bike Marking Scheme with the Community Safety Group who assisted in forensically marking bicycles to deter thefts and enable you to keep track of your bike should it get stolen. I purposely arranged this for a Saturday afternoon to enable all to attend but unfortunately we only had about 24 people who came forward, which was quite disappointing. I even got funding to get a few freebies ie. Hi visibility straps & vests together with bike locks and lights but sadly even this didn’t help. We are hoping to arrange another of these around January 2014 so all of you with new bikes as Christmas presents can bring them to be marked. On a brighter note though, I would like to thank those who did attend (in the rain) to support this scheme and hopefully your bike will be safe as will you with your lights / locks etc. Also I would like to introduce another scheme we are running which is the VEHICLE WATCH 25+ SCHEME. This scheme is designed to increase the likelihood of a stolen vehicle being spotted and stopped by Police. It acts as a deterrent for young people not to steal that vehicle. If you are aged over 25, own a vehicle and live in North Wales, you can attach the Vehicle Watch 25+ stickers to the front and rear windscreens. If the vehicle is seen being driven by someone apparently under the age of 5, it may be stopped and checked. Police will be prepared to stop such vehicle they
see displaying stickers and are being driven by a person apparently under 25 years of age. This scheme is again FREE to anyone who resides in North Wales and is open to all users, both private and commercial. Please get in touch with me for further information and application forms, my details are again shown below. This is a brilliant scheme to deter thieves and gives you more chance of getting your vehicle back before it is damaged or burnt out. Thank you also to all you have sent me their old glasses which I will be passing on to Rob Hewitt for the Doctor at St Asaph to take on her pilgrim trip to Ethiopia and help those who are more unfortunate than ourselves. Your help is very much appreciated, so keep sending them in, and thanks to Meg Lewis at Marchwiel Stores for letting me use the shop as a collection point. Many thanks Regards Lynne

Has it been 12 months or longer since you last cleaned your carpets or upholstery? Carpets should be cleaned regularly even if they don’t look dirty. Like you use anti bacterial sprays on your kitchen work surfaces, carpets should be cleaned for the same reason. A clean carpet helps promote a healthy atmosphere free from dirt and bacteria, and more so for people with allergies and asthma.

Come and meet a personality from the 1930s at Chirk Castle Not only have the rooms of Chirk Castle’s East Wing been recreated as they might have appeared sometime during the 1920s & 30s, but one of the staff who would have worked here has also returned.
from the script, in front of other visitors. Rehearsals take place in our ancient Chapel, which has also played host to performances from our American friends George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
‘Hello. May I introduce myself? My name is Gareth Gilbanks and it is my pleasure to act as tutor to the younger children of Lord & Lady Howard de Walden at Chirk Castle.
‘These pantomime rehearsals have proved enormously popular to watch and to perform. It’s amazing how many budding actors we have amongst our many thousands of visitors.
‘When you visit the castle you may find me in the Bow Room, a magnificently furnished salon which contains many works of art and fine antiques. This room also offers panoramic views over the stately castle gardens, the Welsh border and into Shropshire, Cheshire and beyond.
‘Our Guest Book shows that Chirk Castle has been visited by such great 20th Century notables as George Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling and even a stylish American lady named Wallace Simpson. The list is very lengthy. Why don’t you come and see us too?
‘You will receive a very warm welcome as you relax in the sumptuous furniture and listen to the latest tunes of the 1930s. You may choose to while away the time by looking through our photograph album which contains countless photos of Lord Howard de Walden…often dressed in ‘medieval’ armour.
‘From the 17th Century Chirk Castle was transformed into a fashionable and luxurious family home. We can still see the changing fashions of interior design – from 17th Century wooden panelling, the elegance and balance of the 18th century to the return of gothic themes during the times of Queen Victoria.
‘I spend part of each day preparing and presenting rehearsals for one of Lord Howard de Walden’s own pantomimes – which are produced to show off the children’s acting talents and entertain the many guests who visit. I am currently working on ‘The Reluctant Dragon’. Younger visitors are actively encouraged to dress up and perform, 28
‘I look forward to meeting you.’ Mr Gilbanks is portrayed by Huw Sayer and can be met in the Bow Drawing Room of Chirk Castle’s East Wing most days until the end of October. © National Trust Images.

gardeningtips This is a rewarding month in the garden as you start to see the fruits of your labours. Borders come alive with colour and the vegetable patch is full of fresh pickings. Flower garden - Potted lilies will be growing quickly now and as their flowers start developing they will need some support. Push several canes into the compost around the edge of the pot, linking them up with string to provide stability. If border lilies are not supported by neighbouring plants, use stakes around these too. Roses - Sprinkle rose fertiliser around roots to encourage strong growth and a good flower display. Water in if rain does not fall within a couple of weeks or hoe into the soil, taking care not to harm the roots. Bearded Iris - Once irises have finished flowering in June, congested clumps can be lifted, divided and replanted. Reduce the leaf area by half and replant so that the rhizomes rest at the soil surface. Primulas - Dig up large clumps now and divide into individual plants, each with leaves and roots. Replant into newly prepared soil. Summer bedding plants - Plant 30
out tender bedding plants once all danger of frost has passed. If they have been grown in the greenhouse, harden off in a cold frame for a few days before planting out. Pots and trays of bedding plants can be placed on the patio during the day, but moved back under cover at night. Give them a boost by watering them in with liquid fertiliser. Lupins and early perennials Remember to cut off the old flower stems before they start to set seed. This will tidy the appearance of the plant but as an added bonus may even encourage a second flush of flowers. Also keep a watchful eye out for lupin aphids which should be controlled with an insecticide if necessary. Pruning shrubs - Many springflowering shrubs can be pruned as soon as their flowers have started to fade. Any shoots that have carried flowers can be cut back, shortening them to shape the shrub and control its size and vigour. Forsythia can grow large and ungainly if left to its own devices, so prune to give the shrub a definite shape and form. This and other shrubs, such as Berberis darwinnii, are sometimes grown as hedges, so can be pruned to give a more formal structure.

We keep hearing that loneliness and social isolation is an increasing problem for older people. In rural areas, the problems with a lack of transport can make things a whole lot worse. The national Charity Contact the Elderly and the Penley Rainbow Centre are working together to tackle the problem. They are setting up a brand new friendship group. The group will take out elderly guests for monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties. Each month they will visit the home of a different volunteer host.
If you like an excuse to bake, you would love being a host. You only need to do it once a year, so it fits in well with work and family. All that’s needed to host is a downstairs loo, not too many steps and a big teapot!
Liz Morgan, East Wales Development Officer says, “It is such a simple idea, but it makes a huge difference to people. Some of the guests might not see anyone else in the meantime, so a monthly tea party can make a world of difference.”
If you want to help make a difference, now is the time to contact us. Telephone Rebecca Cupit on 01948 830730 or Liz Morgan of Contact the Elderly on 01938 810635. Or email elizabeth.morgan@ contact-the-elderly.org.uk.
36
Or if you don’t want to host, you might like to help with the driving, picking up the older guests and going along with them to enjoy the tea, then taking them home safely afterwards. A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

SUPERSIZE PYLONS PROPOSED FOR LOCAL AREA
Wrexham Power Limited (WPL) are proposing to build a large gas fired power station on the edge of Wrexham Industrial Estate. They are a property developer from Birmingham with parent company registered in Bermuda. They are not a utility company.
Claims of job opportunities are dubious– many of these jobs are highly specialised and are likely to be brought in from elsewhere.
The power station proposals suggest benefits which may not actually be delivered – see our objections. For more information on the proposals please go to Wrexham Power ‘s website www.wrexham-power.com. But don’t you believe all you read!!
Pollution could affect the industrial estate and local villages including Holt and Farndon.
The electricity will be generated and will need to be transported to the Legacy Substation by means of 400kv SUPERSIZE 50 METRE HIGH TOWER PYLONS (similar to those you see on the M56 towards Runcorn). These may ruin a massive swathe of rural countryside from Bowling Bank, Isycoed, Pickhill, Bangor on Dee, Marchwiel, Crosslanes, Sontley, Eyton to Rhosytllen. REASONS TO OBJECT: Whilst the UK needs more power, there is no genuine need for a scheme of this size in Wrexham area (N Wales already produces more power than it uses – this power station will fill the deficit of power in the South of England at the expense of our environment) There are better locations for such a development in the UK such as the many recently closed nuclear, coal and oil plants which have pylons, etc. in place already. There is no proposal for a sub-station on the Wrexham Industrial Estate and therefore the claims that it will benefit the Estate by providing extra power appear flawed. Wrexham Power are claiming the possibility of sales of heat but have the wrong plant and no infrastructure, This is “Greenwash” to mislead us. 38
The power station would be a huge ‘eye sore’ from rural locations including the Cheshire approaches to Wrexham.
This is not a sustainable or low carbon proposal when it could and should be. It will produce 2.5 million tonnes per year of carbon which will need to be stored underground or out to sea . There are better options for the Industrial Estate that could genuinely achieve the benefits with no requirement to spoil our environment with the proposed pylons, e.g. a much smaller sustainable low carbon energy efficient plant. ‘FRACKING’ further down the line ? A formal consultation is due to start soon and as the project is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, the planning consent required is a Development Consent Order. Wrexham Power Limited’s Development Consent Order application will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate, the government agency responsible for receiving such applications. It will examine the application publicly and make a recommendation the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change as to whether to approve the application. It is the Secretary of State who will ultimately grant consent. All interested parties, including local residents and Wrexham County Borough Council, will have opportunities to submit their views during the consultation. However this consultation is short so we are starting our objections NOW, focusing mainly on the Power company at this stage.
