HOW TO COPE WHEN YOUR MARRIAGE BREAKS DOWN The easy answer is to TALK!
If it’s impossible to talk to your spouse and if you don’t want to worry your family and friends, then speak to an expert, because KNOWLEDGE is POWER. You need facts and figures. You need to know what your future holds for you. You need to speak to someone who is friendly and approachable. Someone who understands. Carol McGuire is a Solicitor & Partner with Thomas Andrews and Partners of 31 High Street Wrexham. She has over 30 years of experience in the field of family law, not just in divorce and separation cases but areas relating to children as well, as they play a huge part in this type of situation and their needs are paramount. Her approach is to allow you to talk through your emotions, at the same time as looking at your future needs. It’s a very difficult
time that you are going through and it’s important that you choose someone who is there ‘to listen’ without making any judgements. She offers a friendly approach where you will find it comfortable to talk openly about your problems. With the expenses of Christmas, it is appreciated that monies may be somewhat tight - so we are offering an initial 25 minute FREE appointment.

West Highland Ramblings
A Diary of Douglas the Westie
I should start by thanking all my readers who have been asking about my welfare. I should explain the reason for the absence of my ramblings. A few months ago I was diagnosed as being clinically obese. Himself immediately withdrew my supply of treaties, took me on a route march twice a day and then sent me off to a health farm for 11 days. I decided to put my paw down - no treaties, no writing. An author of my renown is entitled to just rewards for his labours. Humans can be so stubborn, but when it comes to real stubbornness there is nothing to beat a determined Westie. I got my own back; on every walk I sniffed every blade of grass, walked at a snail’s pace and stopped and admired the scenery every few yards. At last he relented; we have a truce. I get my treaties and recommence my writing. This is only one of my current battles with Himself. On October 3rd I reached the age of 10, which I am told equates to 70 in human years. As yet there is no sign of my pension and I am considering whether or not to go on strike. On one paw I do not wish to let down my readers but I am sure that you will understand that in true Westie fashion I must stand my ground. Talking of age, I

recently met Stewart. Now Stewart is a wire-haired Jack Russell with a fine Scottish name. He was telling me that his father had just died aged 22, which by my calculation is 154 in human years. You can see why a pension is so important to me. On the subject of weight, I was talking to my friend Monty (who seems to also be gaining weight). He has been placed on a diet of Fat Dog Slim. I had actually heard of it when I was approached to see if I would sponsor it for the manufacturer. I had to point out to them that as a celebrity author I could not possibly be seen on advertising hoardings, and as for doggie weightwatcher clinics - do I look the sort of animal who needs to frequent such places? Certainly not now that I have become the new slimline Douglas. I am pleased that my friend Missie is back from her holiday in Spain. Unfortunately, whilst away she had a wee accident. Strolling over the rocks on the beach, she damaged her crucial ligament, and has had to have an operation. She claims to have slipped on a wet rock. I would not be at all surprised if she had not had one sangria too many. Either way she is doing well so I am really pleased for her. Well, I’m off to prepare my list for Santa. Have a good Christmas Och aye Douglas x

King’s. The top performing school in the Chester area. Entrance Exams at King’s open the door to excellence, for girls and boys at both Senior and Junior levels. Our Senior School, for children aged 11-18, produced the top performance in the area at A level and ranked second top co-ed school in the North in 2013. The success of our girls, in fact, rivals the top performing schools in the UK. Virtually all Senior students go on to university, with over 78% of leavers studying at ‘The Times Top 30’ universities and 83 Oxbridge offers in the last 10 years. King’s Junior School offers 7-11 year olds an inspiring education within a separate self-contained school. Its caring and supportive environment encourages your child to flourish in small classes and become, as described by the last inspection, ‘happy learners’.
Strong academic foundations at both Junior and Senior Schools are overlaid with excellent drama, music and sporting facilities and over 130 clubs and activities. This year’s new developments include a Learning Centre for Juniors encompassing a Science Lab, Art studio and Computer and Design Technology workshop, an extension of the Senior’s international GCSEs programme and new enrichment subjects such as Arabic and Anthropology.
Senior Entrance Exam: Friday 24th January: Senior Year 7
Junior School Assessment Days: Saturday 11th January: Junior Year 3 Friday 24th January: Junior Years 4, 5 & 6 Please note: Financial help is available for Senior School, dependent on parental income.

Deck The Hall!
Erddig’s Christmas Weekends rekindle the magic of Christmas.
Escape the bustle of the high street and step into Erddig’s winter wonderland, filled with the scent of roast chestnuts and mulled wine. Travel to past times and experience Christmas as it was celebrated across the ages, or make that extra special visit to Father Christmas in his grotto. Servants will be preparing for Christmas, inviting visitors to help them as they go about their daily tasks. In the kitchen, traditional mincemeat preparations are underway, with stuffing and pastry to make. In the bakery servants will be baking shortbread and mince pies in the traditional scuffle oven and there’s opportunities to taste too. In the servants’ hall, scented with pomanders, a simple and effective room fragrance, visitors can help make traditional paper snowflakes to take home. Boughs of Holly, Larch, Laurel and Norway Spruce will adorn Erddig Hall and outbuildings for the Christmas Weekends. Seven Christmas trees including an 15ft tree supplied by Treetops of Llandegla, decorated and beautifully lit will create the perfect setting for visitors. Entry to the markets, house below stairs and gardens is free for children under 16. There are activities in the house, music and choirs, a magician, Professor Clarkson’s Punch and Judy show, A Christmas Carol (puppet show) and reindeers. The horses will vacate the stables and Dancer and Prancer will move in, along with baby
Blitzen too of course! Santa will be taking a well deserved break from his Christmas preparations to give Erddig’s visitors a warm welcome. Meet Santa’s chief elf before joining Santa by the fire in his cosy living room. Mrs Claus will be on hand to check the big book before Santa finds an early gift to share. A heartwarming experience guaranteed to make you smile. Below stairs is open in the house and as you’d expect Erddig’s servants will ‘deck the hall’. Servants will bring the house to life as they make preparations for Christmas. Maybe you’ll join them for a carol or two? Rhiannon Cooke, heritage learning officer says: “Below stairs will be teeming with Victorian Christmas activities. Visitors can help servants prepare mincemeat and stuffing in the kitchen and sample our tasty shortbread and mince pies in the bakery.” There’s more than 30 craft stalls in traditional wooden chalets selling everything from Christmas crackers and hampers to traditional crafts and toys. We’ll be serving hearty and warming festive fare and there’ll be plenty of mulled wine and hot chocolate to keep the chills away. There will be music and performance galore from Wrexham Community Choir, Wrexham Brass, School Choirs, Rhos Ladies Choir, Dragon Song, Gleek Club, West Kirkby Light Opera Society and more so visit the website for programme details or call 01978 355314.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk Arriva Bus Service. I held a meeting with the Operations Director for Arriva, together with his senior colleagues and the Chair of Governors and Head Teacher from Darland. At the meeting, a number of concerns were raised regarding the approximately 200 students using the buses at peak school times. These concerns include buses not stopping at the church and The Green owing to them being full and buses running late due to the demand for the service. This latter issue has resulted in residents missing trains and failing to get to work or college on time. The ongoing problems of students having to cross the main Chester Road and rush to Lavister to get on the bus before it becomes full, also raises safety concerns. Arriva were sympathetic and have agreed to look into a number of options, including additional capacity at peak school times. They have promised to report back to me with firm proposals and a time scale for implementation by November 22nd. Financial Issues. As a result of the Welsh Government settlement we need to save at least ÂŁ13 million from the 2014/15 budget plus an additional ÂŁ32 million in the following three years. The Council is currently consulting with the public and Community Councils, full details of which are on the Wrexham CBC web site. The impact on Rossett could mean that the Community Council take over responsibility for the play areas
at Greenfields and Mountain View, and the impact for library users is the possible closure of Gresford Library. The mobile library service to Burton and Rossett would not be affected. Other communities who currently make no contribution to footway lighting will be called upon to make such a contribution. In Rossett, the Community Council already looks after footway lighting. Planning. The decision by the Planning Committee (on a split vote) to grant approval for a 100% extension into agricultural land on Burton Rd (as recommended by the Planning Officer) flies in the face of two long-established policies and three planning guidelines. The scarred landscape of Rossett is testimony to the total lack of sensitivity to the village environment by planning officers at Wrexham CBC. Drilling at Commonwood. The Council have received an application for the drilling of an exploration borehole, requiring 24 hour operations, to remove a core of coal for sampling. This is at Commonwood in the Holt Ward. The applicant wishes to be on site for between 60 and 75 days. I have been consulted as the adjoining local member. I have responded expressing concerns regarding damage to the rural environment, potential visual and noise impacts. May I wish you all a happy Christmas and peaceful New Year. We’ve been expecting you Mr Bond! A little bit of Hollywood glamour came to Rossett this week when Sir Roger Moore and his wife chose The Machine House restaurant for lunch. When we first got the email from “The office of Sir Roger Moore, Pinewood Studios” etc etc – I very nearly discarded it as Spam. I was fully expecting it to be asking for a donation or to be offering “Eternal Youth” pills or something daft like that (he looks amazing for 86 years after all!) – it was only when we did some digging around that we realised it was for real! (His Manager, Gareth, comes from Wrexham and knew of us apparently!) “Sir Roger and his wife were charming guests” said Patrick Gatenby, the owner of Machine House. “they were thrilled to enjoy fresh Anglesey crab and lobster which had arrived as usual that morning, and even gave a round of applause at the end of their main course!”
Ever the gentleman, Sir Roger was happy to have his photograph taken with some of the team and enjoyed discussing the last time Head Chef, Adam Gaunt-Evans had cooked for him in the Maldives! “It was really exciting to get the booking from Sir Roger’s office at Pinewood Studios”said Katie Smith, Restaurant Manager, “He was passing through North Wales en route to Birmingham, and the next leg of his speaking tour, and it’s great to be able to say I’ve served James Bond!” We’ve had lots of “ Shaken not Stirred”, “Pussy Galore”,“The name’s Bond, Basildon/ Brooke/James”” gags from guests as you would expect. And lots of debates about which is everyone’s favourite Bond…our very anecdotal, unscientific straw poll would suggest locally:- over 40, more swinging for Sir Roger than Mr Connery, under 40 Daniel Craig is the runaway winner!

Dear Jill, The mailbox article by D Williams (resident of Rossett Park) addressed to Hugh Jones, has raised the hackles of a number of Rossett residents, including those in the teaching profession. Personally, I found the content of the letter, both condescending, and offensive, but my main issue with D Williams is with regard to road safety, which frankly I and other residents of Rossett find simply irresponsible. Clearly D Williams is prone to exaggeration and has no concept of being hit by a vehicle travelling at 20mph, but I can say without doubt it is not ‘walking pace’ and it does kill people. Statistics prove it. “Guess what? You step out in front of cars you get hurt!” is not worthy of comment, but it does say an awful lot about D Williams. There are residents who will remember when Darland Lane was used daily by HGV drivers as an alternative route to the Wrexham Industrial estate. Traffic through Rossett then was a very serious problem, now thankfully due to the bypass that is no longer the case. Even so traffic is still busy at peak times, both in Darland Lane and Chester Road, and despite the speed controls now in place, motorists continue to exceed the speed limits. To suggest that introducing speed limits, particularly around schools, is a nanny state attitude, demonstrates a total disregard by D Williams for the safety of children and the elderly residents of Rossett. D Williams has the advantage of living in Rossett Park which I suggest has never been subject to ‘speed kids’. Less than 200 yards away and traffic on Chester Road is ‘another world’, with cars travelling at speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour. I know I see them everyday - perhaps D Williams is one of them. Richard Godbold (Resident of Darland Lane)

Winter care - As cold nights bring the final leaves tumbling from the trees, rake lawns, sweep paths and patios, and pick up leaves from borders and rock gardens, where their soggy mass can smother tender alpines. mild and dry, continue to divide hardy perennials. On wet soils, it is best to wait until new shoots appear in the spring. Soil conditioning - Where areas have been cleared, start digging over and conditioning the soil. It is worth carrying out a soil test now to check its acidity or alkalinity level (pH). Most plants grow best in a neutral soil, so make adjustments if necessary by applying a lime dressing to very acid soils, or sulphur chips to alkaline ones. Planting shrubs - If the weather conditions remain dry, continue planting evergreen shrubs, conifers and hedging. Even when it’s cold, soil still retains a little heat, especially deeper down, which encourages root growth and helps plants get established. Always take time to prepare the soil well when you are planting long-lived shrubs. Be generous with the compost that you dig in to improve the soil. Repairs - Repair fences, trellises and wooden features. Once annual climbers have died away and perennial ones have lost their leaves, treat timber with wood colour or preservative. Replace loose posts and those rotting at the base before they collapse and cause greater damage.

I have seen reports in the press of a proposal to close Gresford Library and the recommendation for the closure will be made to the executive committee by you as Lead Member for the council. As councillor for Rossett you will be aware that Gresford Library is used by people from Rossett, Burton, Holt and Farndon as well as residents of Gresford and Marford. I find it difficult to believe that the closure of a facility used by residents of such a wide and diverse rural area including your own electors can be recommended as being the maintenance of a valuable service to so many people in such difficult times. Regards, Judy Troth RESPONSE: Whilst I am not a member of the relevant scrutiny meeting myself and other councillors affected by the proposals to close up to three libraries had an input and the recommendation to the executive is for a 26% cut in library hours! rather than closure in order to achieve the savings needed. I do not accept the argument that Llay is a suitable replacement-impractical to say the least for the local play group ( start them young on the literacy journey) and those reliant on public transport. It should be noted that the user numbers in Llay, Gwersyllt & Brynteg have multiplied since investment and I am convinced there would be a similar spike locally. I am conscious that there are some location issues at the present site ,mainly parking and access but am determined to turn over every stone in order to explore the “ Community Hub” idea in our area. In fact one article I have submitted for possible inclusion in the December Essentiallyours refers to this issue and I am looking to having a meeting of those who support our local library in the New Year to garner support. To be frank I will not be able to save the long term presence of a library in Gresford on my own so I welcome your support and hopefully we can spread the word, Many Thanks, Co Andrew Bailey
Hi Jill, My car was recently broken into while parked outside my house. In the process the passenger door was levered out in order to gain access. They then tried to break the steering lock, which they failed to do but in the process twisted the steering column. The car, a Nissan Micra, some 26 years old, and had been in the family for 25 of those years, was deemed a write-off by the insurance company and they offered me £110. I was disgusted with the insurance company because there was nothing wrong with the car that couldn't be repaired. But on the other hand I cannot speak too highly of the police involved in the investigation. The forensic police officer who came to check for fingerprints showed me there was little chance of fingerprints as they had been wearing gloves. I have attached* a letter which I sent to North Wales Police regarding this. I also had a visit from Lisa, our local PCSO. Her manner was efficient, caring and highly professional, and in general the attention the incident received from the police was exemplary and brought confidence and reassurance to a very distressing situation. The door, which although no longer in the perfect condition it had been, is perfectly acceptable. I got a second-hand steering column from a scrapyard for £20 through the advice of Balmuir Garage. They then fitted the replacement steering column for a few pounds and re-MOT tested the car, and I have now had the write-off status of the vehicle removed and it is fully insured and back on the road. Hats off to our local community. It is rare these days to print good news. I hope you can find space in your next issue to include this. K.Holmes

A. Dart Energy plan to make any extractions via pressure tested (to 1000 psi, which is a lot!) pipe work and securely encase this pipe work in concrete. They ensure us that this process is safe and will not pollute any land. Also they will be extracting this gas from a depth of nearly 1000m which will be significantly below any area where any such issues could arise. Q.This initial test extraction (which Dart Energy do have permission to carry out) could lead to the controversial gas extraction process known as hydraulic fracturing (fracking) as Dart Energy do carry out this process in other countries and are 1 of only 3 companies licensed to operate this procedure in the UK.
RESIDENTS have raised concerns about controversial plans to test drill for underground gas.Australian Company Dart Energy has applied for permission to drill at Commonwood Farm, Borras, and is preparing a planning application for another exploration well near Overton. They are to carry out a test extraction for coal bed methane gas. The test wells will seek to confirm coal depth, seam thickness, gas content and gas saturation across the area. Dart Energy stresses the exploratory wells will not amount to a bid to look for shale gas, which could lead to the controversial hydraulic process known as ‘fracking’.They have recently held a series of public exhibitions to help explain to residents what is entailed in this process. Residents concerns are as follows:
A. Dart Energy state that there are no current plans for 'fracking' at the site at Commonwood Farm as they believe the coal bed present here would not really lend itself to this process.Their currently proposed method for the extraction of coal bed methane gas does not require any fracturing process. Q.This operation may give rise to noise pollution due to the fact these rigs run 24/7. A. Dart Energy say that there are noise pollution laws they have to adhere to but these are only applicable for night time operation. However there is no such law for daytime operation.
Q. There is a possibility of structural damage to buildings, also there is one of the coal mining shafts from the Gresford colliery located less than a mile from Commonwood Farm and there Q. This is a 'done deal' and if methane gas is could (in theory) be radon gas present in these found in the required amount then a full time shafts which any gas extraction process could extraction process is simply a formality. disturb. A. Dart Energy will require further permission A. Dart Energy say that because they will be before progressing to any such process, this drilling down way below the level of these will have to be obtained in the same way as any mineshafts and intend to use a non-fracturing other planning application. removal process there is no danger of any of Q. This extraction could possibly lead to land/ these issues arising due to vibration. water contamination especially as the River Dee water table is located in close proximity to this If you would like any more information please site at Commonwood Farm. contact your local councillor.

Wrexham County Borough: It is our aim to safeguard the road user within the County Borough of Wrexham throughout the winter months. Rocksalt is applied to over 500 kilometres of County Borough and Trunk Road network during a 2 ½ hours period when frost or icy conditions are forecast. There are 10 priority precautionary gritting routes which covers 40% of the road network of 1140 km’s of County Borough maintained roads. The gritting routes are pre-determined utilising criteria such as height above sea level, road classification, road gradients and proximity to schools, bus routes, local industry and shopping areas which are likely to generate high volumes of traffic. Resources: Our objective is to ensure that rocksalt is spread on the highway before the formation of ice. To achieve this a dedicated workforce comprising of 40 qualified drivers operate a fleet of 14 gritting vehicles, which are based centrally within the street scene department. Gritting Operations may be undertaken from one of our three depots based at Chirk, Llay or Wrexham Industrial Estate and spread approximately 4,000 Tonnes of rocksalt onto the County Borough road network during an average winter. Rocksalt: The preferred de-icing material utilised by Wrexham County Borough Council is 6mm nominal size rocksalt, which is spread onto the road network at a rate of 10 - 15 grams/m2 prior to the development of frost and ice. This figure is increased to 40 grams/m2 during the onset of snow conditions. Rocksalt is mined from a nonrenewable source and, in high concentration can be environmentally unfriendly and in certain situations can damage vegetation. It is therefore important that the material is only used when necessary and in the correct locations.
To effectively remove ice from the road surface the rock salt requires the action of traffic, which assists in the process of breaking down the salt granules into a saline solution. This rapidly melts the ice and prevents further ice forming for several hours. Salt Bins / Heaps: Salt bins/heaps are located in areas for the use of pedestrians and motorists to teat the public highway only. The council currently maintains in excess of 200 salt bins throughout the County Borough. Salt bins are provided in strategic locations that cannot be accessed by our main gritting vehicles but are subject to being individually assessed against criteria with includes, • Non Precautionary gritting routes • Location within the bounds of the public highway • Benefit to road safety, i.e. areas with steep inclines • Traffic volumes • Proximity to schools and locations of public interest A pro forma to aid assessment is carried out for all new requests for salt bins in accordance with the agreed winter service policy. Community councils may purchase salt bins and rock salt from the council providing that any new salt bins are distinguishable from the Environment Department salt bins and approved location on the public highway. Supply of rocksalt to the public: During the winter months many requests are received from members of the public for this Authority to provide them with rocksalt for personal use. Unfortunately, our salt stock levels do not cater for random supplies outside of our controlled winter maintenance operations and therefore our policy to not supply rocksalt for personal use has been derived. This ensures that our resources are maintained for use by this Authority to provide the most efficient service to the general public.

Gresford Flash at dusk. Jay © Hugh Linn
Last month saw a widespread influx of migrants from northern and eastern Europe. Redwings and Fieldfares began to dribble in around mid-October. Numbers increased noticeably with the first frosts. On 16th November parties of Redwings gathered at dusk to roost near Gresford Flash where over 700 Greylags and Canada Geese were settling in for the night. The Ross’s Goose, mentioned in last month’s article, is present for its fifth consecutive year. Most Gresford geese are residents, unlike the spectacular numbers of wildfowl at traditional sites like Martin Mere in Lancashire where 1,500 Whooper Swans and 7,500 Pink-footed Geese assemble nightly. Shoveler, Wigeon and Teal on the Flash are probably migrants however there is a possibility that the 4 Teal currently frequenting Darland Pool may have bred nearer home. Darland Pool and the surrounding woodland provide shelter and food for a variety of species including Heron, Rook, Carrion Crow, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen, Goldcrest, Mistle and Song Thrushes, Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Tree Creeper, Nuthatch, a selection of
40
finches and tits and, surprisingly, at least one Kingfisher. The noisiest birds, usually heard before they are seen, are Jays whose raucous far-carrying cries earn them a reputation as woodland watchdogs, sounding off at the first sign of intruders. Jays are also responsible for assisting the spread of oaks. In autumn they bury acorns as food stores for winter. Those they fail to recover often germinate and develop into trees. An out-of-season Chiffchaff spent 1st November in a Burton garden before moving south. Also in Burton small numbers of House Sparrows are visiting feeders. House Sparrows, widely regarded as the basic British garden bird, have decreased drastically during the last 25 years. Other local species have disappeared altogether. During the 1980s Hawfinches which had been recorded in Eccleston village since at least the beginning of the 20th Century attracted birdwatchers from miles around to the Rectory garden where family groups of these rare and elusive birds could be pretty well guaranteed. The last sighting was in July 1990. In Cheshire as breeding birds they are now extinct.

DRINKING AND DRIVING DON’T MIX 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured on our roads each year in drink drive related crashes and nearly one in six of all deaths on the road involve drivers who are over the legal limit. If you plan to drink, don’t risk driving: • book a taxi • use public transport • stay overnight • arrange for someone who is not drinking to drive • don’t be tempted to get into a car with anyone else who has been drinking CONSEQUENCES OF DRINK DRIVING If you think you won’t get caught, you’re wrong. Around 100,000 drivers are convicted every year for drink driving. You don’t have to be in a crash to be breath tested. The police can ask you to take a breath test if they suspect you have been drinking, or if you commit a traffic offence. THE MORNING AFTER If you’ve been out drinking you may still be affected by alcohol the next day. Even though you may feel OK when you get up, you may be over the legal alcohol limit
or unfit to drive, and could still lose your licence. It’s impossible to get rid of alcohol any faster. A shower, cup of coffee, or other ways of ‘sobering up’ will not help. It just takes time. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES “I had a drink but it was at lunch time” Even a small drink at lunchtime can make you more sleepy and impair your driving. “I feel fine to drive” Any amount of alcohol will affect your judgement. “I’ve only had a couple” Even a single drink will affect your driving performance. “I’ve had a meal” Alcohol just takes a little longer to get into your system, your driving will still be affected. JUST TO BE SURE There’s no fail safe guide as to how to stay under the legal alcohol limit or how much you can drink and still drive safely. The only safe option is not to drink if you plan to drive. Never offer a drink to someone else who is driving.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Gresford Library My efforts and words at the November scrutiny committee saved the future of Gresford Library for now, if the executive board act on the recommendation. I am a great supporter of libraries, my granddaughter already has her first card and investment in a well placed, well run library is proved to pay immense dividends. I recognise that in terms of parking and location the present library has issues but with your help I intend to do my utmost to keep a library in the village. In next months article in the New Year I will be announcing a date for a meeting to look garner support for a library service in the village. In the meantime your expressions of support are welcome. Carers Support. As we approach the year end I can reflect on a good year personally and look forward to the festive season. However I know that the turn of the year can be a time of reflection and strain for many, such as those with caring duties. I was recently pleased to seen that in addition to the magnificent work they do in emergencies such as the Philippines the Red Cross also run a carer emergency service locally. They provide Home Assistance, Respite Service and Every day First Aid and can be contacted on Wrexham 725204. Insulation measures We are all aware that the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) has been in the news recently and I am not going to enter the debate here on how this should be funded. I do however welcome the agreed ÂŁ7-8m spend on insulation measures across Wrexham that making some houses warmer and possibly softening price rises. Over fifty homes in the Essentiallyours region benefit and it provides employment and apprenticeships locally. 46

A big thank you When you read this my wife Teresa and I will have celebrated our Ruby Wedding. For more than half of that time I have been involved in local affairs, serving on the community council for nigh on twenty five years and the county council for the best part of twenty .Whatever I have been able to do in that time would have been nought without the support of my best friend, and believe me, my sternest critic. With the distinct possibility I may get more criticism can I just give her a very big, Thank You!

The magic of a name The Rolls-Royce story began in 1904 at the Midland Hotel, Manchester when engineer Henry Royce, who was a perfectionist in his trade, met with the Right Honourable Charles Rolls, son of Lord Llangattock of The Hendry, Nr. Monmouth, who was a London-based purveyor of fine cars for the gentry. A strange combination you may think, but it certainly worked very well, as seemingly everyone wanted to own one of Henry’s cars as they were so beautifully made, very reliable and amazingly silent for the times. Henry always said that ‘In the elder days of art, craftsmen wrought with greatest care each minute and unseen part, for the Gods see everywhere’ but, when the high price was queried, he also said ‘The quality remains after the price is forgotten’. There was little doubt that the cars were very special, most owners in those days taking delivery of the Rolls-Royce chassis and running gear and taking it to a specialist coachbuilder to have the body of their choice built on it. In 1914 when WW1 broke out, Bend’Or, the second Duke of Westminster, bought a squadron of armoured cars for £20,000 from the company, based on the 40/50 h.p. chassis and fitted with Maxim heavy machine guns, but perhaps the most exotic bodies were commissioned by the fabulously rich Maharajas of India, and many of them are still sold for huge amounts of money at auctions today.

almost ghostly progress. Thus it all started in the early 1900s by the Silver Ghost, then came the Phantoms One, Two and Three, followed by similar ethereal named models such as the Silver Dawn, Silver Wraith and Silver Cloud, all derived from the same theme. Choosing a name for such prestigious cars was a very serious business indeed, involving much discussion, as you would expect of Rolls-Royce, but in the late ’60s, an advanced new model was due to be introduced, and with great deliberation and secrecy a name for it was chosen. The launch date was decided and everything was made ready for the great occasion which was approaching fast. We all knew it was going to be the Silver ‘something’, but at the eleventh hour the name was revealed to R-R dealers. It was to be called the Silver Mist, a traditional and beautiful name- but in Germany there was panic in the R-R dealership, because the word ‘mist’ in German means dung or the like, and who in that country would buy a Rolls-Royce Silver Sh--? Thus followed a frantic call to Rolls-Royce who swiftly changed the name to Silver Shadow, averting disaster at the last minute. Not that it will ever happen again, as Rolls-Royce is now German owned, and the current Phantom and Ghost models maintain the continuity of this
However, the earliest names of these very special prestigious marque. cars reflected their comparative silence and Merry Christmas to you all. 48
The First Christmas
The events leading up to the first Christmas can easily be misconstrued. Israel at that time consisted of 3 provinces in descending order from north to south: Galilee Samaria Judea Mary, the eventual mother of Christ, lived in Galilee in the city of Nazareth. ‘City’ was a general term applied to any place other than a tiny village. Mary wanted to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was five months pregnant. From a quick glance at the Bible you get the impression that she only had to go two or three villages away to see Elizabeth, but oh no! She walked the best part of 100 miles while she herself was 2 months pregnant, down through Galilee, down through Samaria, down into Judea to the city of Hebron in the hill country where Elizabeth lived. She stayed with Elizabeth for 3 months before tackling the long trek back up to Galilee. After a further 3 months Mary, now 8½ months pregnant, had to make the journey
down to Judea again, this time about 90 miles to the city of Bethlehem, her fiance’s ancestral city. He, Joseph, accompanied her as he was required to register there under the Roman census. They travelled probably by ‘caravan’ in it’s original sense of a procession of carts, animals and walkers, and Mary was undoubtedly given pride of place. Of course we know the rest – the very first Christmas, but the distances involved may have passed us by. Another illusion is that Christmas was not necessarily in what we call December, it might very well have been in the Spring! Some years ago Joddrell Bank, the Cheshire Astronomy Centre, carried out some research into the star of Bethlehem, the star seen by the Wise Men. They went back and back in chunks of 76 years , to see if it could have been Halley’s Comet, but in the end they decided that it was a comet caused by the ‘fusion’ of 2 constellations. It would have been seen for several minutes throughout the Middle East, and, most striking of all, it would appear to be pointing downwards like a finger!
