DISPOSE OF UNWANTED MEDICINES PROPERLY (DUMP Scheme)

Thanks to all who are currently recycling medicines, but please keep emptying those medicine cabinets As part of the Health Service Executive’s “Dispose of Unused Medicines Properly” (DUMP) scheme, Rossett Pharmacy are encouraging people to return unwanted or out of date medicines to them so that they can be disposed of safely and properly. Improper disposal of medication is a growing concern. It can lead to environmental problems and contribute to prescription drug abuse, especially among teens and young adults. Safely disposing of unwanted medicines can also reduce the risks of accidental poisoning as well as environmental damage. Medication can pose a real hazard in the home, particularly to children or other vulnerable people. Clearing out your medicine cabinet is something that should be done on a regular

basis. Check all the dates on medication and remove anything that is out of date or no longer required. As well as the hazards posed by overdose, accidental poisoning and damage to the environment, medicines can alter their composition when out of date and may end up being harmful. The D.U.M.P. program is designed to provide residents with a safe and easy option for disposing of unwanted medications. Please ensure that the medicines are kept in their original, own containers and erase any information which identifies the recipient. Please note that only pills, capsules, or liquids can be accepted; syringes cannot. If in doubt contact Glen and the team at Rossett Pharmacy on 01244 570310.

Has it been 12 months or longer since you last cleaned your carpets or upholstery? Carpets should be cleaned regularly even if they don’t look dirty. Like you use anti bacterial sprays on your kitchen work surfaces, carpets should be cleaned for the same reason. A clean carpet helps promote a healthy atmosphere free from dirt and bacteria, and more so for people with allergies and asthma.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk NEW PCSO AGREEMENT I have recently negotiated a new Service Level Agreement between Wrexham CBC and North Wales Police. This has now been approved by the Council.

One of the key elements is the

focus on Community and Town Councils determining the policing priorities for their area. This devolves responsibility to the community, which I hope, will result in a more responsive style of community policing. COMMUNITY ASSETT REVIEW This a process where Local Members meet with Officers to ascertain future use of all public buildings in the community group. Rossett, Marford and Gresford are joined together to form a group. The concept is to try to reduce the number of publicly owned buildings in a community by combining facilities. This review includes buildings used as community centres, libraries, police and public facilities. In the next few years the Council has to save a further £34 million on top of the £12+ millions saved in recent years. The police and public health have their targets and we need to see if, by working together, we can continue to provide services at a reduced cost. I will report when outcomes are known.

FLOOD DEFENCES Residents have expressed some concerns regarding the effectiveness of the defences, particularly for Gun Street. I am working with the Flood Wardens to see what improvements can be made. We have been reassured that the existing barriers will prevent flooding. However, in recent times there has been some seepage which continues to cause concerns to residents. The public meeting to inform residents of the developments in tackling the flooding at the junction of Darland Lane and Gamford Lane will have been held on April 3rd. Initial investigations appear to show that the drain, from the ditches and highway, into the lake in Darland Woods is blocked off. One theory is that this occurred at the time of the building of Pippin Lane, further investigations are taking place, together with identifying solutions. CHESTER – WREXHAM RAIL LINE I recently attended a meeting on the future of rail transport in North Wales. From this I learned that work to re-introduce a second track will commence this October. I have asked for further information to see what impact this will have on Rossett. I was surprised to hear that a Station for Rossett is still part of the strategic plan. Given that it would have to be on a completely new site, accessible from the A483, this is likely to prove to be a very costly scheme. In my view it is highly unlikely to materialise in the foreseeable future. As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk.

Business Minister Edwina Hart has voiced her support for a campaign to build a super prison in North Wales. According to Wrexham Business Professionals, it would bring massive and muchneeded social and economic benefits for the region, including a 1,000 new jobs. The Ministry of Justice say there is a need for a large prison to house up to 2,000 inmates, with North Wales being one of the possible locations. The campaign for a prison in North Wales has attracted widespread support across the judiciary and among the professional agencies that deal with offenders. It's estimated the prison itself would employ 480 people and support services and suppliers would take on another 560 people in the wider region. Mrs Hart was speaking before a meeting of Wrexham Business Professionals - made up of accountants and solicitors - where she was guest of honour along with Robin Jones, Managing Director of the Village Bakery. She said: "The First Minister has made it absolutely clear that we'd be very supportive of a prison coming to North Wales, not just for the jobs and the economy but also for the welfare of the prisoners. "I think it's very important that Wrexham Business Professionals are making that call because there are enormous job opportunities as well as supply chain opportunities." Mrs Hart was delighted with the continuing success story of the award-winning Villager Bakery which employs 250 people in three bakeries, in Minera and two on Wrexham Industrial Estate.

Welsh Cakes before St David's Day to build the equivalent of two Snowdons. "With the crisis we've had in the food industry recently, people are keener to know where their food comes from and they like to know that local people are involved in producing it. creating jobs and boosting the economy." Robin Jones was grateful to the Welsh Government for the financial assistance they had given, including a processing and marketing grant of ÂŁ620,000 when they opened their gluten-free bakery in 2008 Mr Jones said: "We support our local economy and we receive support from the Welsh assembly, something that we are very grateful for. We can demonstrate that with this support we can grow a business and repay that support with jobs and wealth creation for the local economy." Speaking on behalf of Wrexham Business Professionals, Chartered Accountant Gill Atkinson said: “A new prison in Wrexham would mean 1,000 precious jobs and we're very grateful to Mrs Hart for her support. "In the meantime, companies like the Village Bakery are a real inspiration and a clear demonstration that Wrexham is a great place to do business." It was a message echoed by solicitor Peter Butler, from GHP Legal, who said: "To be able to have the Welsh Government Business Minister here is a real feather in our cap and to have people of the calibre of Robin Jones talking about business and enterprise in this area is fantastic."

The bakery had expanded with the help of grant aid from the Welsh Government and were, she said, a positive example to the rest of the business community. She added: "We've absolutely delighted with the success of the Village Bakery - they made enough Supplied by Ceidiog Hughes. April is the month for birdsong. At this time of year the dawn chorus starts before daylight. Robins are usually first to strike up, closely followed by Song Thrushes which many consider our finest songsters, even rivalling Nightingales. Nightingales are unlikely to be heard in our part of the world but they are not the only birds to sing by night. In rural areas several warblers do so regularly and under street lights Blackbirds, Thrushes, Dunnocks and Robins may be heard competing with the rumble of urban traffic.

first fine careless rapture.” Song Thrushes have a repertoire of as many as a hundred or so phrases, some of which sound almost like human speech. A couple of my favourites from a bird in our garden are “Judy, Judy, Why did you do it?” or “Philip, Philip, you twit, you twit, Tootle Pip.” They are also good mimics and incorporate snatches of other birdsong into their own. Sadly numbers have declined steadily over the past 50 years. Competition from Blackbirds (outnumbered by Song Thrushes in the 1940s) may be a contributory factor but they have been adversely affected For sheer volume the Mistle Thrush is in a by hedgerow loss and the effects of pesticides league of its own. Also known as the Stormcock, on their staple foods which are earthworms, it performs at full throttle from a treetop in snails and insects. the teeth of a March gale, more bawling than singing. The Mistle Thrush’s song, consisting of five or six notes, is similar in shape to that of a Blackbird but rough in quality compared with a Blackbird’s mellow, flute-like notes. Typical Blackbird song consists of short rich musical phrases lasting a few seconds followed by a pause, hopefully giving time for an amenable female to be attracted or a potential rival warned off. The Song Thrush (Turdus musicus) is wellnamed. Its repetitive song is unmistakeable. The poet Browning observed accurately, “That’s the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over, lest you think he never could recapture the

I am a 24 year old fashion obsessive and always have been from the awful neon tracksuits, to finding ways to fashion my school uniform, I loved that with fashion you can be anyone you wanted to be and that you can express how you feel though it. Fashion is not about where you come from, your background or how much money you have, it’s how you represent yourself, how you choose to put looks together and through it you can be you. My love of fashion grew and grew but unfortunately I cannot sew and had little patience with measurements for pattern cutting, so when it came to university I applied to do International Fashion Marketing which combined all the elements of business I loved. I have been lucky enough to work for a variety of clothing companies, including Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins and a company called Hallett which is a concessional company that has floor space in a number of big stores including New Look and Debenhams. I love all areas of fashion and love creating unique looks that are different to what’s on the high street, I have a love 18

of vintage clothing and get so inspired by the original fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn, Edie Sedgwick and Jackie Onassis as well as today’s icons like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen who have a perfect mix of vintage and current trends to create something unique, I am also a big obsessive of fashion bloggers I draw so much inspiration and confidence from them and how they style their looks. Evie Hart is a business I have had in mind for a few years now, originally I wanted to open a boutique, but due to the current economic climate and the overheads of having a shop in a desirable location, it was something I knew I could not financially do. With the rise of online shopping I knew there was a opportunity for my business to become a reality, and hopefully offer something a bit different to what is already available, my business concept is to offer my customers a online boutique. Evie Hart which has trend based fashion in limited amounts (and vintage items too), I have searched high and low to find a perfect mix of quality, fashion and reasonable price points to suit every fashionista and every occasion from shopping to the races.

Machine House Restaurant in Rossett (formerly Churtons) has been open for 6 months now and we wanted to share our story with you to mark the first anniversary of taking over the site in April 2012. As a local Marford family with strong roots in both fishing and the restaurant trade in Anglesey (Louise’s family own the Lobster Pot in Church Bay), we knew exactly what we wanted to do at Machine House .… locally sourced, high quality fresh produce, all home cooked and served with great wine and Welsh beers in a warm, relaxed atmosphere. We’ve been delighted to hear from guests that they are enjoying our food and drink menus and appreciate the service provided by our lovely team. We’re working with local suppliers who share our passion for food and high quality ingredients, and with everything freshly cooked at Machine House, the evening seafood specials and Sunday lunches are going particularly well. I’d say our roast beef is a bit special (but I guess I’m biased!), not to mention the Anglesey lobster which arrives ‘live and clicking’ every week, Matt’s crème brûlée, etc. etc. - I could go on! We know we are not the easiest place to find – tucked away off the main road - and continue to work on signage. Our secluded courtyard

hasn’t seen much activity yet but we're hoping that will change as the weather improves … Our new menu will be ready mid-April, featuring more fabulous Welsh food and drink, and we are looking forward to the raceday brunches and coffee mornings coming up in the Spring. We are very rooted in our community and will continue supporting local causes (we’ve already helped schools, clubs and charities in the area, most recently raising £1,500 for Nightingale House Hospice). The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner and from noon on Sunday. For up to the minute-ish news, why not follow us on Facebook at MachineHouseRestaurant. We’ll look forward to hearing from you on 01244 571678 or hello@machinehouse.co.uk Patrick, Louise and all the team p.s. If you're wondering where the name came from, the building is called Machine House and it has been part of the postal address for years.

NO LONGER TOP OF THE CLASS

As I am writing this article, the biggest news of the week was the ratings agency Moody’s decision to strip the UK of its AAA credit rating. Britain’s debt was marked down one notch to AA1. This is the first time since 1978 – when ratings began – that it has lost the AAA rating. Yet this was no bolt from the blue, as the UK has been on a ‘negative outlook’ for several months, and the agency’s concerns about the outlook for the UK economy have been well reported. Whilst this does represent a landmark decision, it should be put into perspective – there are 21 rungs on the ratings ladder and Britain has dropped only one. Whilst the downgrade saw the value of sterling (against other currencies) fall in early trading, to within a whisker of the symbolically important threshold of 1.5 against the US dollar, it has since steadied and recovered some losses. The year so far has seen sterling lose nearly 7% against the US dollar, whilst the euro has gained 7.5% against the pound. What does this mean for the UK economy and investors? A weak pound is good for the UK’s exporting companies, making their products cheaper for overseas customers, although those companies sourcing materials from abroad will suffer. However, it is also likely to push up the costs of

imports and so put upward pressure on inflation; unwelcome news for families and consumers who are already struggling with rising gas, electricity and petrol prices. Andrew Sentance, former Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee member, cautioned that the cut to the UK’s credit rating would add to the existing downward pressures on sterling. “This of itself won’t increase inflation but it will add to pressure on the pound, which has already fallen a long way in the space of 6 weeks – which is not going to help inflation”. Once again this is bad news for savers, with interest rates at rock bottom it means the real value of money is eroding even further. This is a theme we have mentioned in previous articles and I make no apology for bringing it up again. Speak to an adviser who can help you create a savings or investment plan that suits your needs and gives you the chance of a real return over inflation, it will be well worth it in the long term. If you would like to make an appointment please call Kate or Angela on 01978 311611 or email hadlow.edwards@sjpp.co.uk and we will look forward to meeting you.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD

Thriving High Street! The Red Lion proposals seem to have concentrated the community mind on enhancing the main shopping area in Gresford. I strongly believe that an environmental improvement which encompasses heritage, safer traffic movements and better parking can also lead to a livelier local economy, even in these straightened times. The community council first commissioned a report from Groundwork Wrexham in 2009 but these ideas “trod water” for a couple of years. However, in recent times there have been public meetings and the setting up of a steering group representing various interested parties. Various appropriate officers and directors from Wrexham Council, including the leader and chief executive, have been kept informed.

gardeningtips Handy hints to keep your busy throughout April This is a frantic month for the gardener with lots of sowing, planting and propagating to do. Flower Garden - Soil preparation Continue forking over the soil between shrubs, teasing compost into the surface. Prepare areas where summer bedding will be planted out in late May. Summer bulbs - Many summer-flowering bulbs can be planted in March and April. In mild areas, dahlia tubers can be planted outside, covered with about 10cm (4in) of soil. In cold regions, delay planting until later in April. In the coming months, plant groups of gladioli at intervals to extend their flowering season. Grow lilies in pots so that they can be moved into the garden to fill any gaps. Spring bulbs - Mark any congested clumps that have flowered poorly with a label to remind you to lift and divide them later in the year. Give every clump of bulbs a thorough soaking with a liquid feed. Mulch - Spread a thick layer of compost or well-rotted manure as a mulch around established shrubs and along the base of hedges to help conserve moisture in the 34

soil and keep down annual weeds. Months of wet weather will have caused moss to become a problem in many lawns. Thick moss quickly smothers out grass, so action is needed this spring to remove it, boost grass growth and improve surface drainage across the lawn. Chemical moss killers can be used to destroy existing moss, but this will still need to be raked out. Far better to use a powered lawn rake to scarify the lawn, raking out moss and debris. These can be hired for a weekend if you don’t own one. Afterwards, fork over the whole area to improve surface drainage. Increase frequency of mowing as growth dictates. Later, in April or early May, apply fertiliser and check regularly for weeds, digging out any that you find. Warming the soil - At this time of year, cold, wet soil can prove fatal to early sowings made outside. By covering prepared beds with cloches you will warm up the soil, protect it from hard frost and keep the rain off. Leave the cloches in place for a couple of weeks, then rake the soil surface before sowing seed or planting out young seedlings. Finally, put the cloches back over them to give your young plants a speedy start.

SHORTENED MINUTES FOR THE LATEST MEETING: RED LION UPDATE It is possible that the Red Lion development will go to Planning on 2nd April – if it does, a probable site visit on 12th April. Andrew will keep everyone updated. There have been 599 objections. At the planning meeting, one person will be able to speak pro the development, one anti – both will only be allowed to speak for 3 minutes each. It is understood that the action group, consisting of residents and shopkeepers/owners, are going to either employ or nominate someone to speak at that meeting. DAVE CLARK/WEBSITE Mr Clark has requested that he is paid for work he has undertaken on the website in the past. It was agreed that the sum of £183.02 should be paid to Mr Clark immediately. It was also agreed that a sum of approx. £80 per year should be paid to Mr Clark to continue to host the website, plus approx. £6 per year to maintain the domain name. Discussion for the site – the following were suggested: • Village improvements updates – including Tom Hollick’s report as it appeared in ‘Essentials’ • Past 3 months minutes • Date of the next meeting Graham Frank-Keyes had produced a ‘front page info’ section for the website, and also which could go onto the Community Council website. Everyone agreed that it should appear as Graham had written it. It was agreed to keep the Post Office as the Image postal address as this would save making changes when committee members changed.

MYPAG The paths in the quarry are now more or less laid. There are still some benches which can be sponsored – Andrew Bailey agreed to find out how much sponsorship was (felt to be around £500). There was a request that MYPAG be asked to provide doggie bag bins – probably up near the main entrance. COMMUNITY COUNCIL It had been agreed to remove a large root on the cherry tree at the entrance to the park, with the proviso that another tree was put in if removing the root caused the original tree to die. This was so that the path into the park could be resurfaced properly. The Play Areas Sub-Committee had agreed to ask that the outreach summer playschemes should run for one consequative-days period this year, instead of one day a week. It was felt that running the scheme this way would mean that children and parents were clearer about when it would be running and would make early arrangements to use it, rather than having random days throughout the summer holdiays. The Community Council are awaiting response to this from Wrexham BC. There was a query on whether the Youth Club was threatened with imminent closure. It was understood that it may be close later in the year, but not immediately. Concern that Allington Hall is actually held in trust for the village and therefore closure of the hall was not the responsibility of the Council, although withdrawal of hall-based youth facilities was in their control. The Community Council are waiting for a response.

Guests included Matt Baker, MD of Handbag of Harmonies, Dave Jones, Chairman of the Fron Male Voice Choir, Nora Lucas and a selection of the choir’s families. The evening was a great success with live tweets from Matt Baker, “total thrill to walk into a joyful room and hear a brand new young people's choir rehearse”, and from Dave Jones, “Great to see the enthusiasm of Dragonsong choristers and committee members at tonight's Open Evening #GreatSound and only singing 5 months”.Various parents commented on how much their kids looked forward to rehearsals and were impressed with the committee’s dedication to Dragonsong and its future.

Charlotte Jones, of Harmonette’s fame, is Dragonsong’s incredibly talented Musical Director and she has been an inspiration to the choir since leading them to their first concert at Central Station in December. ROADS AND PAVEMENTS It was good to receive your favourable comments about Claypit Lane and Woodlands Road. The stretch of road between Willow Drive and Hillock Lane is due to be resurfaced, which should stop the water and ice building up near the junction. Pant Lane near Quarry Brow will be patched, but full resurfacing may have to wait a little longer. The March snow and ice caused a lot of potholes. Please keep reporting them on the Council website www.wrexham.gov. uk (click “report it”) or by ringing 01978 298989, where you can also report any street light problems. PLANNING APPLICATIONS The controversial planning application for a small shop on the Red Lion Car Park missed the deadline for the April meeting and will now be determined on 7th May. An application for five dwellings outside the settlement limit near Kathen Court has been lodged. You can see details of all planning applications on www.wrexham.gov.uk under “search planning applications”. MARFORD & GRESFORD LUNCHEON CLUB We start our meetings for lunch again on 9th and 23rd April and on 7th and 21st May at Marford Community Centre at 12.30 pm. Please book your meal in good time, or ring Beryl Blackmore on 01978 855691. The new flooring for the community centre should go ahead when the Management Committee and the Council have found sufficient funds to finance it. 40

MAES-Y-PANT The entrance is gradually taking shape and pedestrians will soon have easier access instead of squeezing around the old fence. The Quarryman sculpture is set on its plinth and interpretation boards are set up. Benches have been erected thanks to generous sponsors and waymarkers and notice boards are due soon. During the summer we will be asking you to sign up as “Friends of Maes-y Pant”. So please look out for details of how to become a “Friend” and for other news on the website http://maesy-pant.com/ PEDESTRIAN CROSSING We are aware of the hazards of the crossing near the Red Lion, but it cannot be sensible for an adult with a child to cross the road 30 metres away from it, which I saw the other day! Fortunately pupils at The Rofft School are still being taught kerb craft. GRESFORD COMMUNITY COUNCIL WEBSITE If you want local news, or details of organisations or businesses in Marford and Gresford, check on the website www. gresford.org.uk You can see what we are spending your money on too.

On Maundy Thursday the Minister Rev. Patrick Rudden took the service in the form of a Passover Meal leading into the Last Supper in the Upper Room. On Easter Sunday three new members were welcomed into the church family which made the Easter celebrations more meaningful.

seduction Have you ever popped to the supermarket for a pint of milk and come out with a picnic set? Supermarkets seem to have a cunning way of making you spend more than you need to, especially as they now stock everything under the sun from groceries to financial services, toiletries to garden furniture. Firstly, you’ll notice lots of heavy things by the door. It’s intended to entice you to go for a trolley rather than a basket, so you’ll load up with more. But don’t get sidetracked. Think what you came for. If you only need a basket of shopping, just take a basket. Next, you’ll see that staple goods like bread, milk and eggs are spread throughout the store, so you have to wander up and down the aisles to find them. Supermarkets work on the basis that the longer you’re in the store the more you’ll spend. So don’t wander. If you need to find something, ask. If you always go in for certain things, remember where they are. Of course, that’s why products are regularly moved around, so you conveniently stumble across new products when looking for your normal items, so memorising a route isn’t foolproof. You’ll also need a good shopping list and the determination to stick to it, no matter what else you see. If you have trouble

with this, do one big weekly trip rather than several smaller trips to limit the temptation. The most tempting impulse purchases are usually found at check-outs.Alongside sweets and magazines, you’ll often find camera film and batteries, which are easy to idly pick up while waiting to pay. If this often catches you out, you need to avoid the queues by shopping during quieter times. You may also find yourself misled by your senses. The aroma of freshly baked bread is usually piped into the store through the air conditioning. If you eat before you go, it should stop you piling your trolley full of snacks and cakes. You’ll also be tempted by sights. Packaging is used by retailers to fool you into thinking you are getting more than you are. A big packet doesn’t necessarily mean big contents. All in all, it pays to keep your wits about you. Just because a supermarket is known for offering value for money, don’t assume everything is cheap. Large supermarkets significantly reduce the prices of a few key items such as a popular brand of cereal or the latest top-selling toy. These ‘loss leaders’ lure shoppers to believe everything in the store is cheaper than elsewhere.
