Not a year that will be forgotten in a hurry. And if that wasn’t enough, a tough old year economically as businesses close or struggle, banks continue to keep a tight rein on their money, and we’re still feeling the pinch on our spare cash with increased costs of utility bills and petrol in the main. And I just thought it was me!
Never mind all that, we’ll all hopefully get a little time off for Christmas, which we can spend with our families and share some quality time with them, exchange gifts and be grateful for what we do have, and that will be priceless. Our local police have sensibly reminded us how to stay on our guard at this time of year when crime can be more of a Blimey - December already. Waxwing © Hugh Linn Whooper Swan
Every few years the failure of north Europe‘s berry crop forces a mass irruption of Waxwings to seek refuge in the British Isles. The last time this occurred on a large scale was in winter 2004/5. Before the end of October this year newly arrived Waxwings had turned up on the east coast. The movement has since grown and spread south and west. The first flock located in our area was in Connah’s Quay with further groups subsequently found in Llandudno, Denbigh, Ruthin and, on 19th November, more than 200 feasting on berries near Wrexham Hospital.. No doubt, as winter progresses, there will be plenty more. Supermarket car parks, orchards and gardens with a variety of fruit trees and berry-bearing shrubs are all likely sites. Waxwings are about the same size as Starlings. They have long crests, silky pinkish brown plumage, grey rumps, chestnut-coloured vents and yellow tipped tails. The distinctive features that give them their name are bright red tips to the secondary wing feathers which look as if they have been dipped in sealing wax. This description might conjure up a vision of some weird creature made up of spare parts from other birds but the real article is sleek and elegant. The flight silhouette resembles a tiny fighter aircraft but while feeding Waxwings often assume strange contorted positions as they change shape while straining to pick and swallow berries.
The anatomical feature enabling birds to contort themselves into odd shapes is a greater number of neck vertebrae than any other warm-blooded creature. This enables owls, for example, to face backwards. Giraffes with the longest necks of all animals have only 7 neck vertebrae, the same as human beings. Some swan species, however, have as many as 25. The accompanying photograph of a preening Whooper Swan (another winter visitor to the U.K.) shows just how flexible their necks can be. The well-watched Ross’s Goose, a popular long-necked local, seems to be well settled at Gresford Flash in company with over 400 Greylags, around 100 Canadas and a Barnacle Goose.

Michael Edwards Marford Councillor
MAES Y PANT / HOLLOWFIELD What a wonderful turnout in November when the BBC’s “The One Show” came to see us, planting hundreds of trees. I was really impressed to see so many young helpers from All Saints and the Rofft Schools, from Darland School, Yale College and Glyndwr University, Scouts, Guides and Brownies as well as smaller tree planters from the Playgroups. A stalwart band of volunteers had been slowly preparing areas for planting, working most weekends beforehand, but the hundreds of people who came on 21st November cleared large spaces so quickly that we were able to plant all 420 trees which the Woodland Trust had given us. My thanks must also go to all of the adults who came as parents, teachers or helpers throughout the day. Members of Gresford Community Council planted a special oak tree in another part of the wood. The main paths had been laid but the heavy rains made some places heavy going. However, we didn’t find any wellies still stuck in the mud the next day. What we did find was hundreds of trees with labels attached, marked with the names of young residents of Marford and Gresford. We really showed all the people sitting at home in front of their televisions what Marford and Gresford can achieve when hundreds of us get together! However, we still have more work to do and anyone who wants to help should check on the Maes y Pant website. We will need to raise money to continue the work, as many of the grants have to be supported by funds we must collect locally. Some people have already sponsored benches, but further ideas and donations would be welcome. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING A number of you have told me about cars that fail to stop 8
at the crossing near the top of Marford Hill. I would like to tell the police and the Council how many near misses have occurred. So please send me an email if a vehicle has failed to stop for you recently and if you can, tell me the date and which way the vehicle was going. A dangerous incident should be reported to the police on 101. ROAD & PAVEMENT RESURFACING I am pleased to see that the resurfacing of Willow Drive has been completed. It always seems a long time from when you first ask for a road to be improved until it is finished. But it is likely that some potholes will appear now that the bad weather is here. MARFORD & GRESFORD LUNCHEON CLUB The Luncheon Club holds its special Christmas lunch, which I know we will all enjoy, at Marford Community Centre at 12.30pm on 11th December. We then have a break until January. Please book a lunch or confirm dates with Beryl Blackmore on 01978 855691. The improvements to the kitchen and ladies’ toilets at the Community Centre have been finished and some repairs completed outside. Happy Christmas to you all. As your Councillor in the Marford and Hoseley area, I look forward to hearing from you by phone, by email, in writing or in person and I hope you all have the New Year you would wish for.

Abbey Gate College is a well-established, coeducational school for pupils aged 4 to 18 on the outskirts of Chester. The college emphasises the importance of building selfesteem and a love of learning in a friendly and caring environment. We value each and every child; the potential in every pupil is nurtured and encouraged and the latest ISI inspection noted that, ‘Students achieve their academic and personal potential’. Aldford School is home to the popular and successful Junior and Infant Department of the College and through beautifully maintained, extensive grounds and a wide range of expertise on the staff, pupils have the opportunity to develop all areas of the curriculum inclusive of a thriving music, drama and sporting timetable. At the Senior School record A level results this year were matched by all of the GCSE pupils achieving 5 A* to C grades, with over 72% of all exams awarded A* - B. However, education is far greater than simply achieving super examination results; at Abbey Gate College the journey itself is of equal importance, providing a stimulating experience, widening opportunities and providing an education for life.
Headmistress Lynne Horner praised the continued hard work of all of the pupils and staff, “We would like to congratulate all of the pupils on their considerable success. It demonstrates once again the excellent work ethic and ethos throughout the College, enabling the pupils to aim for excellence in all that they do”. In summary, Abbey Gate College is a successful and happy school, committed to maintaining traditional standards and high educational ideals with the most recent inspection report inspectors commending the high standards of teaching, learning and especially behaviour in the college.

Personal Safety: Only carry small amounts of cash. Always make sure your purse/wallet is in a secure place. A lot of people will be attending Christmas parties or just going out to celebrate this festive season. Always remember to let people know where you are going and what times to expect you back. Home Security: Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you are not home; this also includes garages and sheds. Use timer switches to turn your lights on when you are not home, especially during these dark nights. If you are going away over the Bank Holiday, make sure your home looks occupied. Don’t leave your curtains drawn in the daytime; ask trusted neighbours, friends or family to look after your home, taking in mail, newspapers etc. Make sure all doors and windows are locked and alarms are set. 12
DVD players etc. Never open the door to Cold Callers; if you have a door chain put it on first. Always ask for ID if callers claim to be from a public/private sector organisation. In the NewYear, the Local Policing Team and Wrexham Community Safety Partnership are organising a ‘bicycle marking scheme’ for local residents. The event will take place at the Marford Community Centre. Please look out for posters around the villages and on notice boards for dates, times and more information. Please may we from your Local Policing Team here at Gresford Police Station take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Earlier this month, the Trustees held their usual monthly meeting to discuss the various matters concerning the Trust. Under discussion were topics as pleasing as our snooker and cricket results, together with the more unpleasant business of dealing with occasional dog fouling on the playing fields. Fortunately, the dog owners who allow this are few and far between and most residents of Marford and Gresford respect our request to keep their dog on a lead as a very sensible safety precaution. Other rather more gratifying subjects under discussion were our electricity bill savings since the installation of the solar panels – indeed these are creating an income for the Trust. The Trustees have agreed to help with the checks regarding risk assessment and building maintenance, which keep us all safe. We have been successful in obtaining a grant of over two thousand pounds for partial reglazing of the Recreational Hall windows – a very welcome development. The Gresford Trust and its many volunteers do a wonderful job in keeping our youngsters fit and healthy! The cricket winter programme continues with the under 10s and under 14s in the Wrexham mid-week league, and the snooker players are progressing well with the A team 1st and the B team 3rd in their respective leagues. For our older members, there was a Christmas cake decorating demonstration at the November meeting of the Women’s Institute and their membership is growing.
Our representative from the Royal British Legion reported that the secretary and chairman are retiring this year. They have 180 members, many of whom took part in this year’s remembrance parade. The craft group is doing very well and the Methodist church will be holding a Carol Service on Saturday 15th December. It is good to report that all our groups are doing well but their success depends upon everyone’s continuing support. All in all, we had an interesting and lively meeting. If you would like to know more about the Trust, its activities and clubs then please go to our website www.gresfordtrust. org A very Merry Christmas to all from The Gresford Trust

A Diary of Douglas the Westie
Well, it is almost Christmas. I have been dropping hints to Himself like mad. It appears that the must-have for this year is either an IPad or a Tablet. I thought I would make some discrete enquiries and rang my Vetinary Consultant to ask how much their 3g-enabled tablets cost. They appeared not to know what I was talking about (some humans are so technologically unaware). Talking of Himself he went off on his holidays and instead of taking me to my Auntie Avril on the Wirral as usual, I was placed in holiday accommodation. Of course, I insisted on 5 star and ensuite accommodation complete with personal radio, tuned to Classic FM. I have to say that the staff were excellent, pandering to my every need and the other guests were appropriately deferential. When I was later collected, I overheard the proprietor refer to me as a classic Alpha Male; it was very obvious that she recognised class and breeding. I did spend a day out with Auntie Avril and Himself. Once again it was a trip to Anglesey - oops, I have to call it Ynys Mon. As usual we spent most of the day wandering around graveyards looking for long-dead relatives. I really cannot 18
understand this fixation; it is obvious that Himself lacks the standards of breeding shown by myself. After all, my family tree is written on parchment, mostly in red ink to denote championship stock. Ah well, I suppose I have to humour him. There was one good thing about the trip; we visited the Marquis of Anglesey’s Column. It is an absolutely perfect edifice for raising one’s leg on. My only thought was whether it should be called the Marquis of Ynys Môn’s column. Oh yes, I also went to that station with the funny name. I think it was called Llanfair PG Tips - strange though, there was no sign of a tea shop. Interestingly there was a huge Outlet Mall there which of course was run by a Scottish Company with tartans everywhere. I was asked to pose for a photograph at the entrance; no doubt it will be used in publicity material. I couldn’t resist running around saying “Och aye the noo” and singing Flower of Scotland. Well I didn’t actually sing – (gentlemen of refinement behave with decorum) but the thought did cross my mind. Ah well, back to reality and Christmas, so to all my canine friends and admirers and their kind owners, Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda. Douglas xxxx

Help available to turn empty homes back into use
People in Wrexham who are looking to return empty properties back into use can now apply for financial help thanks to a new scheme. The Houses into Homes scheme has made over £435,800 available to people across the county borough in a bid to provide people with much needed homes. The Welsh Government scheme provides interest free loans to enable the renovation, improvement and conversion of empty properties for use as residential accommodation. Once completed the properties can be either sold on the open market or let. Eligible properties must have been empty for six months or more. Single units of accommodation can receive a loan of up to a maximum of £25,000, with a maximum loan of £150,000 available per applicant. Cllr Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Housing and Planning said: “We welcome this initiative by the Welsh Government and encourage people to
come forward and apply for the grant which will help turn currently empty homes in Wrexham into affordable housing for those currently looking to rent or buy. Huw Lewis AM, Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage “Empty homes are, quite simply, a wasted resource. There are approximately 20,000 long term empty properties across Wales, depriving people of a much needed home and blighting the community. “Providing good quality, affordable homes for people is a priority across Wales and we have been exploring a number of ways to help us meet the growing demand. We hope the Houses into Homes scheme will encourage landlords, home owners and developers to come forward and turn empty properties into homes.” For more information about Homes into Houses scheme, please contact Siôn Wynne, Housing Partnership Officer, 01978 315 587 or email sion.wynne@ wrexham.gov.uk

Christmas Crime Menu Dear resident, Christmas is a busy time of the year for everyone, including criminals. A high percentage of crime is opportunist in nature and can therefore be easily prevented by taking a few precautions. Please read and ‘digest’ this special menu and don’t let criminals enjoy Christmas at your expense. For further advice, speak to your Crime Reduction Officer on 101. Have a happy Christmas and a safe and peaceful New Year.

Phew! Where did that go? That’s it. It’s happened. I have finally turned into my mother – where did that year go to? No sooner than the tree had gone and the tinsel had been packed away it seemed like we were already watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics, whilst in reality we were all waiting and waiting and waiting for the summer that never arrived! We hope that all of our readers have had an enjoyable, safe and successful 2012 and as usual will finish with some completely irrelevant year end thoughts with no guarantee at all of any accuracy! Ponder these: • 90% of us will buy our pets Christmas presents. • The only word in the English language with 3 consecutive double letters is “Bookkeeper” – who said accountancy was boring? • 21 acres of pizza is eaten every day in the USA. • The experts on life expectancy are very confident that the first person who will live to be 150 has already been born. (Unless they eat all of the above pizza).
• Parker Brothers print more money every year for their ‘Monopoly Game’ than the US and UK Treasury combined. • ‘ Typewriter’ is the longest word in the English language that can be typed on one line of a standard keyboard. To finish with a couple of quotes, the first one to consider as you do your Christmas shopping from Oscar Wilde who said “A bargain is something you can’t use at a price you can’t resist’. And lastly on the subject of money and wealth from John Paul Getty (who was worth a pound or two) who famously said “My formula for success is rise early, work late and strike oil” We do hope you will continue to read our more serious financial articles in Essentiallyours and look forward to hearing from more readers in 2013. May we wish all of our readers a happy, safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year.

essential gardening Flower Garden - Prune roses down tallgrowing bush roses by about a half to help prevent wind-rock loosening and damaging their roots and shorten all the branches on standard roses. Plant barerooted rose bushes this month. Shrubs - December is a good time to move evergreens and large shrubs that have outgrown their current position. Try to lift them with as large a rootball as possible and tie them to stakes for extra stability. Cuttings - Take hardwood cuttings now from a wide range of shrubs. Winter care - As cold nights bring the final leaves tumbling from the trees, rake lawns, sweep paths and patios, and pick up leaves from borders and rock gardens, where their soggy mass can smother tender alpines. Leaves also provide shelter for slugs and snails, so clear them up without delay, taking care not to disturb any nesting hedgehogs. Water features - Removing pumps and filters from ponds and water features helps prevent them being damaged by freezing water during the winter. Keep ponds covered with netting to prevent fallen leaves blowing in. Dividing perennials - If conditions are
mild and dry, continue to divide hardy perennials. On wet soils, it is best to wait until new shoots appear in the spring. Soil conditioning - Where areas have been cleared, start digging over and conditioning the soil. It is worth carrying out a soil test now to check its acidity or alkalinity level (pH). Most plants grow best in a neutral soil, so make adjustments if necessary by applying a lime dressing to very acid soils, or sulphur chips to alkaline ones. Planting shrubs - If the weather conditions remain dry, continue planting evergreen shrubs, conifers and hedging. Even when it’s cold, soil still retains a little heat, especially deeper down, which encourages root growth and helps plants get established. Always take time to prepare the soil well when you are planting long-lived shrubs. Be generous with the compost that you dig in to improve the soil. Repairs - Repair fences, trellises and wooden features. Once annual climbers have died away and perennial ones have lost their leaves, treat timber with wood colour or preservative. Replace loose posts and those rotting at the base before they collapse and cause greater damage.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk LIGHTING There have been significant problems with footway lighting in Cromar and Waverley Crescent and Trevalyn Hall View. The lighting is owned by Rossett Community Council and Brian Doyle (the Clerk) and I have been pressing Scottish Power to deal with the matter urgently and effect a permanent repair. The lighting in Llyndir Lane is currently out of action as a result of a major cable problem. The issue is complicated by the fact that one light is owned by the County and the other by the Community. I am awaiting a detailed estimate for the cost of the repair, but initial estimates indicate a cost up to ÂŁ20,000. It may be possible to restore the light nearest to Chester Road but I do not believe that the cost is justified for the remaining light. FLOODING This summer and autumn have seen our flood defences put to the test. In the main the new flood protection system at the Alyn and Gun Street has proved effective and the Environment Agency have promptly installed the barriers when needed. I am currently pressing them to be more proactive in clearing major tree falls that have the potential to cause serious blockages. I am concerned with their failure to remove the very large tree that has been perched at
the head of the weir for the last 6 weeks and am currently asking them for urgent action. Ongoing is the flooding at the junction of Darland Lane and Gamford Lane, which also affects the gardens of some of the properties in Broadoaks. An additional problem is the ditch in Gamford Lane. I have held meetings with Dwr Cymru and Council officials in order to try and resolve the problem. POLICING I recently spent a Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning on patrol with North Wales Police in the centre of Wrexham. I was looking at the problems associated with late-night drinking and the concentration of drinking establishments in a small section of the town. I was impressed with the way in which the police are operating in very difficult circumstances. By being proactive, they are preventing crime and anti-social behaviour offences even before they occur. I hope to repeat the exercise with the rural policing team in the New Year. Overall, the crime figures across the County Borough continue to fall. I have also been actively involved in the issues of arson that have been occurring recently. Wrexham Council, North Wales Police and the Fire and Rescue service have all worked together to deal with this problem and to bring any perpetrators to justice. May I wish you all a peaceful and blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk.

drinkdriving DRINKING AND DRIVING DON’T MIX 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured on our roads each year in drink drive related crashes and nearly one in six of all deaths on the road involve drivers who are over the legal limit. If you plan to drink, don’t risk driving: • book a taxi • use public transport • stay overnight • arrange for someone who is not drinking to drive • don’t be tempted to get into a car with anyone else who has been drinking CONSEQUENCES OF DRINK DRIVING If you think you won’t get caught, then you’re wrong. Around 100,000 drivers are convicted every year for drink driving. You don’t have to be in a crash to be breath tested. The police can ask you to take a breath test if they suspect you have been drinking, or if you commit a traffic offence. THE MORNING AFTER If you’ve been out drinking you may still be affected by alcohol the next day. Even though you may feel OK when you get up, you may be over the legal alcohol limit
or unfit to drive, and could still lose your licence. It’s impossible to get rid of alcohol any faster. A shower, cup of coffee, or other ways of ‘sobering up’ will not help. It just takes time. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES “I had a drink but it was at lunch time” Even a small drink at lunchtime can make you more sleepy and impair your driving. “I feel fine to drive” Any amount of alcohol will affect your judgement. “I’ve only had a couple” Even a single drink will affect your driving performance. “I’ve had a meal” Alcohol just takes a little longer to get into your system, your driving will still be affected. JUST TO BE SURE There’s no fail safe guide as to how to stay under the legal alcohol limit or how much you can drink and still drive safely. The only safe option is not to drink if you plan to drive. Never offer a drink to someone else who is driving.

Wrexham County Borough: It is our aim to safeguard the road user within the County Borough of Wrexham throughout the winter months. There are 10 priority precautionary gritting routes which covers 40% of the road network of 1140 km’s of County Borough maintained roads. The gritting routes are pre-determined utilising criteria such as height above sea level, road classification, road gradients and proximity to schools, bus routes, local industry and shopping areas which are likely to generate high volumes of traffic. Resources: Our objective is to ensure that rocksalt is spread on the highway before the formation of ice. To achieve this a dedicated workforce comprising of 40 qualified drivers operate a fleet of 14 gritting vehicles, which are based centrally within the street scene department. Gritting Operations may be undertaken from one of our three depots based at Chirk, Llay or Wrexham Industrial Estate and spread approximately 4,000 Tonnes of rocksalt onto the County Borough road network during an average winter. Rocksalt: The preferred de-icing material utilised by Wrexham County Borough Council is 6mm nominal size rocksalt, which is spread onto the road network at a rate of 10 - 15 grams/m2 prior to the development of frost and ice. This figure is increased to 40 grams/m2 during the onset of snow conditions. Rocksalt is mined from a nonrenewable source and, in high concentration can be environmentally unfriendly and in certain situations can damage vegetation. It is therefore important that the material is only used when necessary and in the correct locations. To effectively remove ice from the road surface the rock salt requires the action of traffic, which assists in the process of breaking down the salt 40
granules into a saline solution. This rapidly melts the ice and prevents further ice forming for several hours. Salt Bins / Heaps: Salt bins/heaps are located in areas for the use of pedestrians and motorists to teat the public highway only. The council currently maintains in excess of 200 salt bins throughout the County Borough. Salt bins are provided in strategic locations that cannot be accessed by our main gritting vehicles but are subject to being individually assessed against criteria with includes, • Non Precautionary gritting routes • L ocation within the bounds of the public highway •B enefit to road safety, i.e. areas with steep inclines • Traffic volumes •P roximity to schools and locations of public interest A pro forma to aid assessment is carried out for all new requests for salt bins in accordance with the agreed winter service policy. Community councils may purchase salt bins and rock salt from the council providing that any new salt bins are distinguishable from the Environment Department salt bins and approved location on the public highway. Supply of rocksalt to the public: During the winter months many requests are received from members of the public for this Authority to provide them with rocksalt for personal use. Unfortunately, our salt stock levels do not cater for random supplies outside of our controlled winter maintenance operations and therefore our policy to not supply rocksalt for personal use has been derived. This ensures that our resources are maintained for use by this Authority to provide the most efficient service to the general public.

Every winter, cars are stolen from driveways across North Wales because owners leave them unattended, keys in the ignition, while they warm up and the windscreens defrost. Some victims nip inside for just a few seconds to collect a bag or finish the last mouthful of coffee - but that’s all the time an opportunist thief needs. Insurance companies may not pay out for cars stolen in this way and if your house keys are taken as well, you’re making your home vulnerable.
FREEZE OUT CAR THIEVES ON FROSTY MORNINGS: • Clear windscreens with de-icer and a scraper • Sit in your vehicle while the heater de-mists the windscreen If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call 101 or 0300 330 0101 and ask for your local police station. If you see a crime being committed call 999. NORTH WALES POLICE A safer North Wales

GRESFORD METHODIST CHURCH
The Christmas Fair held at Gresford Methodist Church raised approximately £1,400 for church funds. This helps us maintain our building and witness in the local community. Later in the month we hosted a concert in the church in aid of Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham. A tribute to the WI was given by Gill Tanner, assisted by Margaret Robbins who also read some of her own poetry. Refreshments were served at the end of the concert which raised £240 in support of the hospice. Seasons greeting and Christmas blessings from Gill Tanner Penny asked me to thank all who had given to the Poppy Appeal in Stonewalls and Burton Road. The amount collected was £54.62

One Show to the rescue at Maes-y-Pant The BBC’s One Show came to the rescue of Maes-y-Pant on Wednesday November 21st. Maes-y-Pant had received 420 saplings and an oak from royal grounds, donated by the Woodland Trust, to plant on site, as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations this year. We had to clear a lot of ground to plant the saplings and despite many volunteers helping over 4 weekends we knew we had a lot to do. The BBC therefore chose our project as one that needed help and would show it as part of a regular Wednesday evening slot featuring worthy projects. A BBC film unit came to the site on Monday and 2 of the Maes-y-Pant Action Group (MyPAG) members, Sue Kelly and Trevor Britton, were interviewed by Mike Dilger. After getting plenty of material ‘in the can’, the film unit then focused on the village on Tuesday and interviewed Bryan Formstone, a local naturalist, Lisa from ‘L’s Kitchen and staff from Cutting Edge. On Wednesday the Outside Broadcast Unit arrived and we were down to serious business. We did have a setback as Mike Dilger had to return home because of a family emergency but Lucy Segal, a ‘veteran’ presenter of the show, came to the rescue. Groups of people, organised by the BBC show arrived during the day. The BBC
again took footage for the programme and prepared for the live broadcast at 7pm. During the day we estimate about 300 people turned up to help. Gresford Community Council members also visited to plant a ‘Jubilee Tree’. There was a great deal of interest and many turned up on a dark night in the woods when the show came live from Gresford just after 7pm and later, when the last trees were planted (we’d been planting the same tree and looking busy for 5 minutes) and the day’s work was done. Our thanks go to all of you who turned out to support us, unfortunately too numerous to mention here and to local artists Simon O’Rourke for the oak sculpture of a quarryman and Keith Evans for an impression of the mature trees planted. Some of you may have visited for the first time when the One Show came to town. If so, we hope you come back and walk round as there is continuing progress on the footpaths. See you there.

WRITER’S FOURTH COOK BOOK FOR “HELP FOR HEROES” Following on from the success of her last three cook books Sandi Braithwaite has released a fourth book, ‘Just Christmas’, this time to raise money for Help for Heroes. Since she started writing her cook books, four years ago, Sandi has raised a considerable amount of money for charity. Sandi, of Rossett, is now hopeful that this latest book will achieve even more success. The book is once again being supported by Gary Rhodes, as were the previous books, and Gary has kindly given three of his favourite Christmas recipes in aid of this worthy charity. In addition Sandi has had some wonderful support from many businesses in the area including Aston Jones Wines, Wrexham who have matched wines with some of the recipes. The book is being sold at £9.99 and is available on line at entertainwithsandi. wordpress.com/book- Pursglove & Brown Chester, Holt Lodge Hotel Wrexham,
Hampton Veterinary Group Malpas, Jane Smellie Optician,Wrexham/Chester and many more of the sponsors in the book. When asked how the project came about Sandi said: “I am a great believer in putting back what you get from life. I have been very lucky and this is a way for me, on a personal level, to help those who are less fortunate. I wanted to do this for Help for Heroes, on their Trauma side, as the mental side is something we don’t see and the help is greatly needed for these brave boys.” Bryn Parry from Help for Heroes said: “We are so grateful for Sandi’s support. Also we would like to thank every one who has sponsored her to make this book such a success, including publisher Mike Evans and every one else involved. Without kind people like Sandi who are willing to give their time and skills to come up with ways to fundraise for us, we would not be able to continue our vital service”.

Well Done Canon Walker I would like to congratulate Canon Walker on her wonderful tidying up project of the church and the 2 church yards during the past 12 months. The new tastefully designed notice board has put the church on the map, and the painting of the railings together with the new path to the burial ground are to be commended in her list of achievements. We should all be proud of our tidy church yards and grateful to Canon Walker for the new Rossett church she has worked so hard for. David Keeling
