your life, your home, your community. In true January style despite New Years Day being over a week ago, it feels so much longer. You think time would fly by returning to work after nearly 2 weeks off, but somehow it just doesn’t in January. I’m sure it would at any other time of year.
Mind you the flooding and rain I’m sure has had us all on edge. Locally, Bangor on Dee seemed to cop for the worst of it as usual .The road closures, flooded fields, and the poor woman trapped in her car nearby on the A525 just before Christmas wasn’t quite the run up to Christmas we would like to see. The lady had to be rescued by firefighters in a boat but is absolutely fine I’m pleased to say. As I type there are no local flood warnings in place but I’m so shocked by the recent devastation and how wet the year has been.
I don’t know about you but it’s like waking up after a long sleep having time off over Christmas and trying to get back into work mode, well for those of us that are fortunate enough to get time off that is. I’m aware for some of us this is a busy time of year, particularly for retailers and the hospitality industry, and I’m sure our Let’s hope 2013 is a drier year and we local pub and hotel owners are shattered won’t have to put waders or wellies on after the Christmas period. our Christmas lists! Anyway I hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas and New year and had some quality time with your families. Again another Christmas where I didn’t cook the dinner, which is good for anyone wanting to have a nice meal! I think I’ve managed not to do one now for over 10 years! I’m not sure if that’s good or bad really.

And economically let’s hope the world can recover, we’ve already had our first casualty on the high street as Jessops go into administration and I hope that’s not set the tone for the rest of the year.
All the best, Jill

wintermotoring This winter is forecast to be the coldest we’ve seen for many years, so we have put together some tips to ensure your car is well prepared for those winter trips. Bad weather can strike suddenly, so it’s no surprise the number of cars requiring assistance increases over this period. To be a step ahead and ensure that winter breakdowns are a rare occurrence, here’s a driver’s check list: • In cold weather antifreeze is essential for protecting your car against frost damage. It is important the correct strength mix is used as neat antifreeze can turn to sludge when very cold. A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is recommended. • Check oil and water levels regularly, referring to manufacturer’s manual. • Check all lights are in working order. Replace burned out bulbs and remember to clean road grime from all lenses when washing the car. • Check your front and rear fog lights too; remember these should only be used when visibility is reduced
to around 100 metres and switched off when visibility improves.
• Examine tyres for signs of uneven wearing and for any cuts or small nicks in the sides of the tyres. • Check tyre pressure once a month. • This is definitely the time of year to get your brakes checked by a professional. • Check that both front and rear wiper blades are not worn or damaged. If they are leaving smears across your windscreen, it’s time for new blades. • We have them rolling around in the boot all year, but when winter strikes, make sure you know where the can of de-icer and a scraper are. De-icer can also be used to defrost doors and petrol filter locks. • Carry a few things just in case. Gloves, a blanket, a small shovel, a torch and some cash are essential. • Consider carrying a mobile phone with you. Remember to make sure your phone is fully charged before you set off.

Housing development takes on local apprentices A major new housing development in Wrexham is already reaping employment rewards in the town. A local building firm has just taken on eight new apprentices to learn their trade on Anwyl Construction’s £13 million contract to build 127 new homes on two sites in Wrexham for leading social housing landlord Wales & West Housing and Wrexham County Borough Council. Bricklaying specialist sub-contractors Alan Davies and Sons will be doing much of the work on the two sites on Kingsmills Road and Rivulet Road and they have already recruited the apprentices. Four, who come from Yale College’s Faculty of Construction and Engineering in Bersham Road, will be trained as bricklayers while the remaining four, from Caia Park will be on general building duties with the opportunity to move on to specialist apprenticeships. Iain Murray, Construction Manager for awardwinning builders Anwyls, said: “It was always our intention to ensure that this major contract should bring benefits to the local area and we’re delighted that this is already happening. “It was important to us that this project provided training opportunities and that was one of the reasons why Alan Davies was successful at the Meet The Contractor event we held in June. Alan Davies, 63, learned his trade as an apprentice bricklayer in the old Llay Main colliery, building ventilation shafts and bricking up old mine workings and he said: “I’ve always been keen to have apprentices and we always use Yale College. “I would think almost every bricklayer in the town has worked for me at some time and a lot of them learned their trade with us. “We’ve taken on four from the college as
apprentice bricklayers and they will be with us four days a week and in college one day a week and the four from Caia Park will be on general building duties but if they impress us there will be apprenticeship opportunities for them too.” The twin developments are due to be completed by December 2013 with Rivulet Road seeing more than 35 houses and apartments built while a further 92 will be developed at Kingsmills Road. The apprentice recruitment has also been welcomed by Yale College’s Graham Evans, Director of the Faculty of Construction and Engineering, who said: “We’re delighted that four of our students have been taken on and we hope that as the job progresses we will also see opportunities for apprentice joiners, plasterers, electricians and plumbers. “This is the only significant building project locally and it is very encouraging that it is taking on young men from within the catchment area. To have four on one job is excellent and we’re over the moon about it.” Anwyl Construction Director Mathew Anwyl said: “We regard apprenticeships as vitally important to the future of the construction industry and we have close links with colleges such as Deeside and now Yale and the excellent training schemes they run.”

Welsh Motoring Writers honour RAF Valley Over the years, the Welsh Motoring Writers Group has presented their prestigious Tom Pryce Trophy award to many famous people for their achievements on land, sea and air, including Jonathan Jones, Welsh power boat racer; Owen Wyn Owen, restorer of ParryThomas’ L.S.R. car ‘Babs’; Richard Parry- Jones CBE, Chief Engineer and suspension guru of Ford; David Richards, CEO of Prodrive; Nick Reilly CBE, President of GM Europe- the list goes on and on. However, this year marks the 20th. anniversary of the WMW Group, and so the Tom Pryce Trophy has been awarded to a whole group of people, namely R.A.F. Valley, Anglesey,- for its fast jet combat training ( probably the best in the world) and for its helicopter search and rescue operations. This year also marks the 60th. anniversary of fast jet training at Valley, being equipped with Vampire T11 two-seat jet trainers in 1952. Nowadays it’s the versatile Hawk trainers we see so expertly flown over our demanding Welsh terrain, turning young men and women into first rate combat pilots. The award was presented on behalf of the WMW by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Gwynedd, His Honour Huw Morgan Daniel ,to Group Captain Adrian Hill ADC RAF, Valley Station Commander, who, in his acceptance speech on behalf of all at Valley, likened the modern day pilot to racing driver Tom Pryce in his F1 car. This , of course, is continued by Wing Commander Andy Green breaking the Land 10
Speed record in his jet car Thrust SSC and, next year, at the wheel of Bloodhound, hoping to raise the record to over 1,000 m.p.h.! RAF Valley’s search and rescue operations are legendary. There are so many people who owe their lives to the skilful pilots who fly their helicopters with such precision- be it in stormy conditions at sea or hovering over the steep sloping sides of many of Snowdonia’s highest mountains. Some people rescued this way have been pleasantly surprised to see the Duke of Cambridge at the controls! This year, the Royal Welsh Crystal trophy has been inscribed ‘Athrylith ar Adennydd Chwim’ (Prowess Born on Wings of Speed), but the WMW’s special Automotive Achievement trophy was also presented to Tim Williams, Chief Executive of the Welsh Automotive Forum in recognition of its key role in Wales’ main industrial sector.

A foster carer sharing her fostering story. Fostering children can be a challenge, albeit one that is often rewarding. Hayley has been fostering children for 14 years. ‘It has its highs and lows,’ she tells us. ‘I’m lucky to have had more highs!’ Hayley was first introduced to the world of fostering by her own parents. Hayley’s parents began fostering when she was a teenager, taking on mostly teenage boys. ‘There were some problems,’ Hayley recalls. ‘I felt a little pushed out, but I grew up and grew out of it.’ Hayley decided to foster herself when she had her own home and child.
boy and a 4-month-old girl. The boy has lived with Hayley and her partner for 3 years and is very settled and has shared many social experiences and holidays abroad with them which has helped his confidence and self esteem. For the most part, though, these lows are vastly outweighed by the highs. ‘It’s great watching them grow in confidence. ‘We make sure that the children we foster are treated like part of the family,’ Hayley says of her day to day life. ‘It’s just like any other family. The children of course argue and bicker just like normal siblings – it can be a bit hectic!’
‘My 14 years has been lovely, with not too many challenges,’ Hayley says. Even for Hayley, though, there have been some low points. ‘It’s sad when they don’t believe in themselves.’
Hayley counts herself lucky to have such a great support network. ‘I’m lucky to have the support of my mum, as well as some fantastic social workers. I’ve been given lots of helpful training, and if I have a question or problem, my social worker will always find an answer, or even some helpful courses.
Over the years, Hayley has come to look after mainly younger children. As well as her own two children, a 16-year-old girl and a 5-yearold boy, Hayley also fosters an 11-year-old

robbieburns Born in Alloway, Ayrshire, in 1759 to William Burness, a poor tenant farmer, and Agnes Broun, Robert Burns was the eldest of seven. He spent his youth working his father’s farm, but in spite of his poverty he was extremely well read - at the insistence of his father, who employed a tutor for Robert and younger brother Gilbert. At 15 Robert was the principal worker on the farm and this prompted him to start writing in an attempt to find “some kind of counterpoise for his circumstances.” It was at this tender age that Burns penned his first verse, “My Handsome Nell”, which was an ode to the other subjects that dominated his life, namely scotch and women. When his father died in 1784, Robert and his brother became partners in the farm. However, Robert was more interested in the romantic nature of poetry than the arduous graft of ploughing and, having had some misadventures with the ladies (resulting in several illegitimate children, including twins to the woman who would become his wife, Jean Armour), he planned to escape to the safer, sunnier climes of the West Indies. But, at the point of abandoning farming, his first collection “Poems- Chiefly
in the Scottish Dialect Kilmarnock Edition”, was published and received much critical acclaim. In a matter of weeks he was transformed from local hero to a national celebrity, fussed over by the Edinburgh literati of the day, and Jean Armour’s father allowed her to marry him, now that he was no longer a lowly wordsmith. Alas, the trappings of fame did not bring fortune and he took up a job as an exciseman to supplement the meagre income. The last years of Burns’ life were devoted to penning great poetic masterpieces such as The Lea Rig, Tam O’Shanter and a Red, Red Rose. He died aged 37 of heart disease exacerbated by the hard manual work he undertook when he was young. His death occurred on the same day as his wife Jean gave birth to his last son, Maxwell. On the day of his burial more than 10,000 people came to watch and pay their respects. However, his popularity then was nothing compared to the heights it has reached since. On the anniversary of his birth, 25th January - Scots both at home and abroad celebrate Robert Burns with a supper, where they address the haggis, the ladies and whisky. A celebration which would undoubtedly make him proud.

Lesser Black-backed Gull (below) Blackcap © Hugh Linn
New Year greetings to all our readers. The Waxwing invasion hit Rossett on December 1st with a flock of 60-70 seen in Harwood’s Lane by Steve Palin. Typically they did not stay. Wintering Waxwings are restless in search of food. When they find a supply of berries they consume everything they can eat and then move on. Other winter visitors, however, settle in for weeks or even months. Blackcaps are berry eaters too but, unlike Waxwings, they are less choosy and prepared to vary their diet with alternative items such as fat, seeds and peanuts provided in birdfriendly gardens. Throughout December five of these unobtrusive warblers joined Long-tailed, Blue, Coal and Great Tits, assorted finches and, on one occasion, even a Tree Sparrow at our garden feeder. Traditionally Blackcaps have been regarded only as summer visitors but over the past half century increasing numbers have been recorded during winter months and especially in gardens. It used to be assumed these were nonmigrants remaining behind after the breeding season, however scientific research now shows that they actually belong to a different population from eastern Europe. After Christmas gull numbers tend to build up at Gresford Flash. Over the years some unusual species have been recorded. Gull identification can be tricky, especially as the larger gulls take four years to mature and pass through a variety of plumage phases acquired during successive
moults before reaching adulthood. One of the rarer species spotted during December was a Yellow-legged Gull. Normally resident around the Mediterranean and further east they now occur regularly in the United Kingdom. The Flash’s most numerous gull with yellow legs is the Lesser Black-back. The Yellow-legged Gull‘s grey mantle is strikingly paler and in winter they usually have pure white unstreaked heads. Gulls are not the most popular bird species and it is not surprising that even amongst birdwatchers gull enthusiasts, otherwise known as “larophiles”, are often regarded as nerdy obsessives! Most visitors to the Flash prefer ducks. Recently the resident population of Mallards and farmyard escapees has been joined by a female Goosander and 5 Shovelers.

yourmoney
Bob Dylan once wrote “Money doesn’t talk, it swears,”. Getting control over your finances will provide a passport to a speedy, stress-free year. However, gaining control is easier said than done. We’ve all seen the figures marking the increasing level of UK consumer indebtedness over the past year. When outgoings exceed income, debt is the only outcome. A survey earlier this year found that one in five people in the 18-29 age bracket is permanently overdrawn and one in three uses their overdraft to finance other debt. Every year the banks hoover up at least £40 million in penalty charges incurred by customers who breach current account and overdraft rules. But you don’t have to be a victim; instead take a few simple steps to minimise and eventually eradicate your overdraft and increase the amount of money you have ‘left’ each month. 1: ANALYSE YOUR EXPENDITURE Leaving aside the large monthly direct debits and standing orders, where can you make savings on the small stuff? Check bank statements to ensure you’re not still funding
long forgotten causes (eg associations, charities, societies) or subscribing to facilities you have ceased to use, such as gym memberships. 2: ITEMISE WEEKLY OUTGOINGS Note down every purchase you make - no matter how small. Budget food and drink at a sensible level. For instance, do you need a smoothie every day as part of your government-approved five portions of fruit and veg? A fresh apple or carrot would be a lot cheaper. Establish a weekly limit for such expenditure and pay with cash so that you can see the money disappearing. It is simple common sense; if you haven’t got the pure hard cash then you can’t spend it. 3: CREDIT AND STORE CARDS Read the small print, do the sums and understand the dangers of compound interest. If possible, switch your balances to a 0% interest deal, but note the increasing prevalence of upfront balance transfer fees and other conditions. Try to always make more than the monthly minimum repayment. Consider that a £1,000 balance at an APR of 14.9% would take 19 years and seven months to clear and cost £1,116 in interest if paid back at the minimum 2% level. Paying back at 3% each month brings the time down to 11 years and seven months, and the interest paid to £545.

KEEPING COMMUNITIES SAFE Digital Surveillance Wrexham Ltd is a Wrexhambased company that was set up seven years ago by two entrepreneurs from engineering and IT backgrounds, with the initial intention of finding ways to reduce crime and disorder. DSW now provide specialist CCTV and electronic security solutions. Their team of skilled engineers is dedicated to designing, installing and supporting CCTV and security solutions for every requirement and their mission is to provide the best specialist CCTV and security services available, providing each customer with a quality product, outstanding service and excellent value. They currently have ongoing bespoke CCTV projects and security solutions in many industries including, Nuclear Power, Renewable energy, Oil and gas, Aviation, Aerospace, Pharmaceuticals, food and general manufacturing industry not to mention retail surveillance systems, analytical video software systems and time-lapse film video production. They also provide Digital, IP and HD CCTV systems, harsh environment CCTV and highend domestic electronic security and perimeter protection systems. DSW designs and builds bespoke products to address specific problems within communities and has a passion for improving the quality of life of those whose lives are blighted by the antisocial behaviour of others. They are continually developing, testing and improving their products for the purposes of crime reduction and recording evidence of anti social behaviour.
Specifically, a wealth of technical, engineering and software experience has been put to use in developing ‘The Community Safety Camera’ - a major anti-social behaviour deterrent. This rapidly deployable post-top camera is light enough to be installed on any lamp post and has been awarded the Government's certification of IK10++ rating for resistance to vandalism and impact. Its recorded images are stored on board in incredibly clear high definition video and it is therefore a de-centralised CCTV solution. Police officers and PCSOs are able to access the footage directly, control the camera and review and back up recorded footage via a laptop with a secure wireless connection and secure encrypted software. This removes the need for the processes of requesting footage from a third party. To date DSW has had excellent feedback from county councils, community councils and housing associations who are already making good use of ‘The Community Safety Camera’. They have worked in close conjunction with Wrexham Community Safety Partnership for over 5 years on a weekly basis, and in that time they have developed a close working relationship with many Police Officers, PCSOs, councillors and community workers, which has helped when evolving this and other surveillance solutions and deterrents to anti-social behaviour. If you would like to find out more or see a demonstration, the team at DSW would be more than happy to speak to you.

Happy Financial New Year Now that the last of the Christmas turkey has been finished off and we are into the New Year, it’s time to dust off the annual financial New Year resolutions to get our finances in good order for 2013. With prices going up and interest rates remaining low, it’s doubly important that we get the best value for all of our money this year. Below, I have outlined some areas that you should revisit at the beginning of the year to ensure that you are getting the best deal. Savings. Check those savings account rates with banks and building societies. Did they have an introductory rate to entice you in, and has that rate now finished? For example some are offering an instant access account paying a rate of around 2.00 % which includes a bonus for 12 months. Savers who leave their money in beyond 12 months will see their rate reduce to just over 0.52%. Does your account have a similar arrangement? Cash ISAs may have the same issue as mentioned above. Many people use Cash ISAs as long term investments. However, low interest rates mean that the returns do not justify tying up the capital. Currently you could have a 5 year fixed rate cash at 3% and with inflation at 3.2% (RPI October 2012 – ONS) means that in real terms this account is currently losing value. Consider the option of moving long term cash ISAs to investment linked ISAs as there is the potential to make a real return after inflation and all your ISAs can be in one place. However, this is not a decision to be made lightly, as although you can transfer a Cash ISA to a Stocks and Shares ISA, you cannot transfer a Stocks and Shares ISA to a Cash ISA and the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA does not apply to a Stocks and Shares ISA. The ISA allowance this year is £11,280 and
you have until April 5th to use this to make an investment. Pensions. How well are your current schemes performing? You should review the performance on a regular basis with your adviser. At the same time look again as to how much you are contributing, is it enough to provide a good income? Are you taking advantage of the tax relief available on pension savings? The deadline for making a contribution is April 5th, so make sure you have everything in place before then. Investments. Do they need reviewing? Is the performance respectable and does your portfolio need rebalancing? The key to decent investment performance is making sure your assets are held in the right areas at the right time. Has your portfolio become too concentrated in one asset class and increased the risk? If you have a mortgage are you on the best deal available to you? If you are paying the standard variable rate, should you switch to a fixed rate at very low levels now, to ensure that when rates eventually increase you will not be affected? There are some very good fixed rates available at the moment and it’s worth reviewing your rate with a mortgage adviser to ensure that you are on the best deal. The secret to making sure that your money is working hard is to keep on top of things, but in many cases we don’t have the time or the inclination to do so. This is where a relationship with a good Wealth Manager or Financial Adviser can be crucial to a happy financial new year. * source – Moneysupermarket.com
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and with the exception of the ISA, are dependent on individual circumstances. essentiallove Long before it was actually called Valentine’s Day, there was a good old pagan festival called Lupercalia. It was held in ancient Rome at the beginning of February to honour the god Pan and herald the arrival of Spring, and was associated with purification and fertility rituals. Sounds promising! During these rituals, goats and dogs were sacrificed, and young men were anointed with the blood. Then there was the usual feasting, raucous drinking, and so on, that we all know and love. Afterwards they had to run round and round the city slapping young women with strips of soggy goat flesh called Februa. Apparently this was welcomed as a blessing by the women as it was supposed to make them more fertile. Although the extra laundry probably wasn’t. Another cracking tradition: after they’d run out of slabs of dripping goat corpses, the names of all the young women in the city were placed into a giant urn. Each young
man in the neighbourhood waited in turn to take a random name out of the urn, and the couple would be paired up together for a year after a bit more feasting, eroticism, and sexual-game playing. This weird matchmaking often resulted in marriage. Valentine by name - The early Christians decided to put a stop to all this unbridled eroticism and overt sexuality, and changed the festival to one of romantic love. They grabbed hold of a fantastic public relations opportunity in the shape of Saint Valentine. The Catholic Church recognises at least three people called Valentine or Valentinus, who were martyred, so the Valentine story could be about any one of them, or indeed all of them. One legend says that Valentine was a priest or bishop who lived in third century Rome. Whatever your view on Valentine’s Day, past and present, don’t be caught out by forgetting your loved one!

PLANNING APPLICATION It is an essential part of our democratic system, that the opinion of every individual can be heard before a decision is made by a local planning committee or perhaps by a planning inspector in the event of an appeal. I am very grateful that so many people have taken the time recently to express their views to the planning officer on one particular application. I am confident that their voice will be heard. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING Many people tell me, that they are afraid that traffic will not stop, to allow them to cross the road at the pedestrian crossing at the top of Marford Hill.A number of people have given me details of some scary incidents. However I would still like to know how many near misses have occurred.Would you send me an email if you have stepped on to the crossing and a vehicle has failed to give way for you recently? If you can note the date, the time of day and the direction that the vehicle was going, it will help. If you have sufficient information about a dangerous incident please ring the police on 101. ROAD & PAVEMENT Winter weather is bound to find flaws in road surfaces and turn them into potholes. Please report them to the Council on their website www.wrexham.gov.uk (click “report it”) or by ringing 01978 298989. It is also a useful way of reporting dog fouling, graffiti or fly tipping. There is also a “severe weather” section on the website which shows school closures etc. 30
STREET LIGHTS The light outside the Rofft School has been replaced. I have tried to speed this up as the path between Wynnstay Lane and Sandrock Road has been very dark. Please let me know if you see other dark spots, where a street light would help. There is also a new waste bin outside the school, which should reduce the sweet papers etc. in the street. MARFORD & GRESFORD LUNCHEON CLUB I enjoyed our Christmas lunch, but although I had not drunk much, I gave out the wrong dates for January. The correct dates are 22nd January, 5th February 19th February and 12th March at Marford Community Centre at 12.30pm. If in doubt please check with Beryl Blackmore on 01978 855691 when you book your meal. The Community Centre looks much better outside where work has been done to the walls. As your Councillor in the Marford and Hoseley area, I look forward to hearing from you by phone, by email, in writing or in person.

Every winter, cars are stolen from driveways across North Wales because owners leave them unattended, keys in the ignition, while they warm up and the windscreens defrost. Some victims nip inside for just a few seconds to collect a bag or finish the last mouthful of coffee - but that’s all the time an opportunist thief needs. Insurance companies may not pay out for cars stolen in this way and if your house keys are taken as well, you’re making your home vulnerable.
FREEZE OUT CAR THIEVES ON FROSTY MORNINGS:
• Clear windscreens with de-icer and a scraper • Sit in your vehicle while the heater de-mists the windscreen If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call 101 or 0300 330 0101 and ask for your local police station. If you see a crime being committed call 999. NORTH WALES POLICE A safer North Wales

divorcemyths Myth: If a spouse has behaved badly or has had an affair, this will have an effect on how the family finances will be divided. Fact: Only in rare and extreme cases will a spouse’s marital behaviour affect the division of assets. In most cases it has no bearing on the court’s decisions. Myth: Long-term cohabiting couples have the same rights as married couples when they separate. Fact: Legally speaking, a cohabiting couple are treated very differently from a couple who are either married or in a civil partnership. Unlike married couples, partners in a cohabiting couple cannot bring claims against each other for assets such as property or maintenance payments. Myth: Pre-nuptial agreements in England and Wales are not worth the paper they are written on. Fact: Historically, pre-nups in England and Wales may have been persuasive in helping the court make a final decision regarding a financial settlement. Nevertheless, the court could also disregard the pre-nup if it considered the agreement to be unfair. This has led to the common view that pre-nups in England and Wales are rarely binding. However, a high profile case in 2010
(Radmacher v Granatino) which ultimately went to the Supreme Court, may now mean pre-nups have more weight. The Supreme Court highlighted that if the pre-nup was entered into under certain circumstances, it could indeed be considered fair. These circumstances included both parties entering into the agreement freely and that both parties also understood that the agreement was legally binding. That said, pre-nups are no more legally binding than they were prior to the Radmacher case, but they do have the potential to be more influential under the right circumstances. Myth: It is possible to get a ‘quickie divorce’ and be divorced in a few weeks. Fact: No matter what the media may report about ‘quickie divorces’ in England and Wales, for most people they do not exist. Typically the divorce process will take several months, with a required six week gap between the Decree Nisi and Decree Absolute before the divorce is formalised. Outside of the UK, there are some countries which allow speedier divorces, but the couple would need to have ties with one of those jurisdictions in order to get divorced abroad.

gardening TOP OF THE LIST THIS MONTH Prune gooseberries and red and white currants. Aim to keep the centre of the bush open, with strong branches. Prune unproductive stems back to younger, more vigorous shoots. Remove weak growth and low horizontal branches that would easily bend to soil level under the weight of the crop. Remove about a third of the oldest stems of blackcurrants close to ground level. This will encourage productive new growth from the base. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place. Collected seeds and open packets (inset) are best stored in airtight containers. It can be helpful to use those moisture-absorbing sachets of silica that often come with mail order deliveries. Take stock of your vegetable seeds and check the sow-by dates. Some, such as lettuce and especially parsnips, deteriorate quickly and it is best to buy fresh seed every year. Order mail order herbaceous perennials in good time. This is a most economical way of buying choice plants, but the season ends in spring and demand can be high for the best plants. Next month is peak mulching time. Do this after any fertiliser applications to trees, shrubs and climbers. Order mulch material
and fertiliser now – if you shop around you can make significant savings. Christmas houseplants can bring vine weevil, mealybugs, leafhoppers, whitefly and other pests – examine these plants closely and treat as required. Take root cuttings of perennials of oriental poppies (Papaver orientale), verbascum, phlox, acanthus and eryngium. Check stakes of newly planted trees to ensure that high winds have not loosened the soil around the rootball. Adjust the tie or stake and firm the soil. Now would be good time to send garden machinery for servicing and tools for sharpening, to avoid the spring rush. Encourage amaryllis to reflower - Their striking, blowsy flowers make amaryllis (correct name Hippeastrum) a popular Christmas present. Given the right care, the bulb will charm you with its flowers year after year. After the plant has flowered don’t cut off the leaves, but continue watering, feed weekly with a balanced liquid fertiliser and keep in good light indoors. You can move the pot outside during the summer, but protect from sun scorch, slugs and snails. Take care not to overwater: this can cause rotting of the roots and the base of the bulb.

North Wales Police have conducted a bicycle marking event where members of the public attended and had their bicycles forensically marked. Forensic marking is done through applying a special die to the bottom of the bike frame which contains a unique code to that bike. Each unique code is then entered into the national bike register along with the owner’s details so that the owner can be identified following any recovery of a bicycle that has been lost or stolen. Members of the local policing and community safety teams were present at the event to provide security advice and answer any questions. Though this event has passed - if any local residents would like to have their bikes marked, free of charge, you can arrange to have this done by getting in touch with your local policing team.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Road Traffic Issues Some traffic issues have arisen and I am in discussion with the council and local police to find solutions. I know I am not the only one to have re-routed a 40 tonner led by their satnavs aiming to negotiate the impossible turn and low bridge at the bottom of the Griffin Hill -it may need more signs. Also I have asked Councillor Hugh Jones, with his community safety hat on, whether responsible members of the public can be trained in the use of speed guns under the aegis of the police-watch this space. Lastly we are all in a hurry but when I hear reports of vehicles mounting pavements in their haste endangering pedestrians I exercise zero tolerance and have asked the police to prosecute. If you see incidents ring 101. Spreading the Load

essentialresolutions The tradition of the New Year’s Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year. The New Year has not always begun on January 1, and it doesn’t begin on that date everywhere today. It begins on that date only for cultures that use a 365-day solar calendar. January 1 became the beginning of the New Year in 46 B.C., when Julius Caesar developed a calendar that would more accurately reflect the seasons than previous calendars had. The Romans named the first month of the year after Janus, the god of beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances. He was always depicted with two faces, one
on the front of his head and one on the back. Thus he could look backward and forward at the same time. At midnight on December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new. The Romans began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year’s Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune. Later, nuts or coins imprinted with the god Janus became more common New Year’s gifts. In the Middle Ages, Christians changed New Year’s Day to December 25, the birth of Jesus. Then they changed it to March 25, a holiday called the Annunciation. In the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII revised the Julian calendar, and the celebration of the New Year was returned to January 1.
10 MOST COMMON NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS 1. Lose weight 2. Stop smoking 3. Stick to a budget 4. Save or earn more money 5. Find a better job 8
6. Become more organised 7. Exercise more 8. Be more patient with others 9. Eat better 10. Be a better person

SAVE OUR TOILETS!
The abusive use of the public toilets in Rossett is continuing so it has been decided that they will be closed until March 2013 and a notice displayed explaining the reason for their closure. It is hoped that those who abuse them will realise the outcome of their actions. It is being considered that a payment system could be introduced to restrict their use to people with some degree of respect for them. we put customers first using traditional values in a modern way It’s over twenty years since Camgas started supplying LP Gas (Propane and Butane) in cylinders and tanks, direct to domestic customers. We cut out the middle-man to ensure consistent, competitive prices delivered promptly whatever the weather and installed by our local, friendly and competent staff. Our family run business philosophy is simple - we put customers first using traditional values in a modern way. There are no automated consumer unfriendly telephone systems that keep you waiting, listening to adverts etc. Camgas staff are ready to answer your questions and take your orders.
Whether you need portable gas bottles to fuel your BBQ, patio or mobile heater, Camgas are able to fulfil your cylinder requirements. For central heating, cooking and water heating there are large Propane gas cylinders or a selection of Propane tank sizes to suit your requirements. Domestic bulk tank users are now able to switch suppliers without moving the existing propane tank. It’s a simple procedure, taking 28-42 days, providing you are out of contract. Camgas staff can talk you through the procedure, send out further information and arrange visits.

“The most rewarding part of being a Shared Lives carer is seeing the change in the people that come to live with us. We have had adults come to us without any confidence. Some have spent much of their lives being over protected and it is lovely to see them become independent. Some people will then move on into their own homes.” Shared Lives carer
