your life, your home, your community. August has been a lot brighter and dryer, I’m glad to be able to say. Still the wettest summer for a 100 years, but let’s hope September follows in August’s footsteps, and if we get an Indian summer as well that will help us feel like we’ve had some sun before Autumn and Winter sneak up on us. I bet the younger ones amongst us are giving a huge sigh of relief now that their exams are over and the results are through. Good or bad, at least it’s all over! Mind you, I do hope that no one is too upset with their results and that we all followed in team GB’s Olympic success. I was keen to get Wrexham’s gold post box on the front cover of the magazine this month, until Carol reminded me that we’d saved this spot for a local photo entry. So the lovely front cover shot this month is courtesy of Robert Bruce of Lavister! But let’s not forget the honour of having a gold post box in Wrexham though, courtesy of Tom James, I think, who won his gold medal in rowing. That will put Wrexham back on the map! I wonder if St Asaph, which pipped us to the post for city status, has a gold post box? If there was an Olympic gold medal for magazine delivering (and I don’t see why there shouldn’t be - there seems to be Olympic medals for lots of obscure things
Telephone 01244 571 602

these days!) I’d like to think Carol and I would make the final and bring a gold post box home to Rossett. No, forget that - Joe, Sam and family would get the gold these days, with Carol and I fighting over silver with our other regular helpers! I was saddened and surprised by the closure of the Golden Grove in the last few weeks. In fact I’d eaten there on a glorious Friday evening a few weeks ago and the place was buzzing, so its closure a few days later came out of the blue. However, I do appreciate how difficult it is running a business at all these days, let alone in the pub industry which is even more difficult. Helena and Gary have worked hard over the last couple of years to make the place a success, so it’s a shame it didn’t work out for them and I would like to wish them all the best for the future. But as one door closes another one opens, quite literally as Churtons, or “Machine House” as it is now called, re-opens after having been closed for just over 2 years. Nick and Maggie will be a hard act to follow but I wish locals Patrick and the team all the best for the success of Machine House. P.S. We’ve been inundated with contributions this month; seems to be loads going on, which is great. Enjoy!
All the best, Jill

HOW CAN WE SAVE ROSSETT MILL? As you know our beautiful Rossett Mill is having a difficult time. It has been repossessed from its local owner and has been thrust under the hammer twice now but it has failed to sell at auctions. Hugh Jones, our local councillor, has been contacting lots of heritage and charitable organisations, including the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, and the Welsh Mills Society, etc in an attempt to preserve the building and to keep it protected within a conservation group, but so far has had no interest. The difficulty is the amount of money
needed to acquire the mill to repay the outstanding bank loan. A possible way forward is to establish a community group that can work together and develop a business plan that can satisfy the criteria of the Heritage lottery fund to keep the mill within the community as a working tourist attraction. Hugh is keen for any volunteers that could help or support such an initiative to contact him to see if there is enough local interest to do this. Additionally if anyone would like to contribute financially to acquiring the mill, it may be possible with some generous contributions that it could be bought locally by a group of individuals or businesses.
As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk
BOYS & GIRLS, 7-18
Opening up opportunities for Juniors, Seniors... and beyond A visit to The King’s School will open your eyes to a unique learning environment, where children of all ages are able to flourish and develop their personalities as well as their academic abilities. In the Junior school you’ll see why a recent inspection called our 7-11 year old girls and boys ‘happy learners’ – enjoying Drama, Music and Sport and a host of other activities, as well as gaining a firm academic foundation. That foundation is built upon at The King’s Senior school and Sixth Form, where outstanding teaching staff and superb facilities, a diverse and enriching new curriculum and a vibrant atmosphere, inspire young minds and encourage our 11-18 year olds to attain the highest standards. Virtually all go on to universities, and 85% to ‘The Times Top 30’. Financial help is
available for Senior school, too, dependent on parental income – King’s opens up opportunities for all children, throughout their school life and beyond. You are warmly invited to our Open Morning, where you can explore the Junior and Senior schools, along with our new Sixth Form development, meet the teachers and pupils, and see for yourself what makes The King’s School unique.

Maes y Pant
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED We are now at an exciting stage in the development of the Maes-y-Pant site from a disused quarry and commercial pine woodland into an attractive local amenity. A contract has been awarded to Lawtons Plant Excavations, a small business local to Gresford, to develop a number of main footpaths around the site. This will start on Monday 3rd September. You can find out more about the Maes y Pant site if you go to our website at www.maes-y-pant.com. Please add it to your favourites as we try and keep it up to date and informative. However there is a lot of very important work that volunteers can do and now is the time we would like your help. Our next working party is on Sunday 23rd September to tie in with the Tidy Wales Week supported by the environmental charity ‘Keep Wales Tidy’.
the Autumn we will be installing some fencing, benches, way markers and information panels but we may ask contractors to do that work. Then of course there is the essential but never ending task of clearing litter although people have helped to keep the site pretty tidy. We will also have to maintain all this work, so help will be needed on a regular basis but at present we are aiming to complete all the initial work before the end of February 2013. We will be bringing necessary tools and equipment but you should wear your older clothes and stout footwear and you might like to bring your gardening gloves.
If you are interested please get in touch with Sue Kelly (tel: 01978 854469, quarrykelly@hotmail.co.uk) or Trevor Britton (tel: 01978 855266, trevorbritton @btinternet.com) to register your interest.
Please come along - all are welcome and we will only give you tasks you think you can do. If you fancy getting involved but not the labour, we are looking for drawings for the information boards for example and you may like to send us drawings of what you have found in the old quarry – children and adults alike.
The work includes creating, trimming back and clearing footpaths including removing branches from last year’s controlled thinning of trees. Later in
If you have any queries or think you can help or support us in any way then please get in touch using the above contact details. We hope to see you there.

The Cross Lanes dates back to the late Victorian era when it was built as a private house. Its name in Welsh was Maes y Nant, which translated means house by a stream. The Oak panelling in the front hall is Jacobean, dating back to about 1620. Together with the wooden staircase it was acquired from a grand old house, Emral Hall at the nearby village of Worthenbury, and carefully restored at Maes y Nant in 1935. In 1959 Maes y Nant was sold and converted to a hotel. Many of the original features and homely atmosphere are preserved to this day. Our six acres of beautiful gardens and grounds provide a truly wonderful setting for weddings, wedding receptions and other parties and events, whatever time of the year. Situated just two miles from the Wrexham Industrial Estate making it the perfect venue for business meetings and functions as well as providing overnight accommodation for visitors. There are two ground floor meeting rooms, both open directly onto the grounds making them ideal for leadership courses, team building exercises and training. Our Garden Suite has long been one of the area’s most popular venues for social functions such as weddings and dinners. It opens out to extensive lawned gardens making it ideal for summer days and evenings. The main lawn is large enough to take a large marquee. 28 year old Tom James from Coedpoeth, Wrexham won a gold medal in rowing during the men’s coxless four event. James defended his own Olympic win along with his teammates, four years after winning in Beijing. He becomes the fifth Welshman to win multiple Olympic gold medals. James has also overcome physical challenges this year, and was treated for atrial fibrillation, a heart condition in which the sufferer experiences an irregular heartbeat. As promised, Wrexham got a “gold” painted post box to mark the Olympic win; the gold post box can be found outside Townhill Post Office in Wrexham. The special post boxes are part of a campaign by the Royal Mail to celebrate Olympic gold medal wins by painting a post box “gold” in the home towns of winning athletes. Special stamps are also being printed to honour the gold medallists.

Students in Wrexham schools are once again celebrating as they receive their A Level results. Recent results show an overall A level pass rate of 98% which is marginally above the all Wales figure and also above performance in Wrexham schools in 2011. 23% of grades awarded were at A* or A, which is a significant increase on the figure for 2011 and is in line with the all Wales figure. 95.9% of Wrexham schools’ sixth formers achieved the Level 3 threshold, which is 3.5% above last year’s figure. The Level 3 threshold performance measure takes into account all qualifications, including A and AS Level, vocational and skills qualifications. The pass rate for Wrexham schools’ sixth form leavers achieving the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma qualification is 97%, which is a further improvement on last year's exceptional results and once again well above the Welsh figure of 82.8%. This year, 82% of Wrexham schools’ sixth formers followed the qualification which requires students to be 14

They, along with their families and schools, can be very proud of their achievements. These results today are the culmination of two years’ commitment and hard work by our young people, supported by their families and schools. I am particularly pleased to see the significant increase in the number of students achieving Grades A* and A. COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Water, water! When Arriva started sending their buses past my front window in Pant Lane a few weeks ago, it was time for me to don wellies and waterproofs to investigate what the problem was. Sure enough, there was a mini lake near the shops on Chester Road where the drains basically could not cope. The police are to be congratulated for conducting prompt and efficient marshalling duties. Having already inched through floods by the Beeches and on Clappers Lane that Sunday, I was aware it had been a downpour that would have challenged Noah. It may have been a freak deluge but we need to guard as much as we can against potential flooding. I have since reported a number of silted up drains, including Clappers Lane. I am also investigating extra or improved soakaway solutions behind Lake View and at Chetwyn Court/Chester Road. If you know of any blocked drain covers or gullies I will gladly report them, or you can do so yourself directly by phoning Wrexham 298989. Healthy options. An issue that has exercised your three local county councillors in August is the paper entitled “Healthcare in North Wales is Changing”.

Litter louts in Wrexham are warned to pick up their rubbish or risk being fined as Wrexham Council work with Wrexham Police to issue penalty notices to those who refuse to clear up their rubbish in the town centre. Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Collaboration and Partnership, said: "I have held a meeting today with Police and Enforcement Officers and asked them to become more proactive in tackling the litter problem in Wrexham. Leaving litter is extremely anti social behaviour and also contributes to a general lack of pride in our communities. Recently Llwyn Isaf and the surrounding area have been left strewn with rubbish and even though adequate bins are provided they are just not being used. Whilst we welcome the mainly young people who use this area, they have to accept responsibility for disposing of their litter in the bins provided." If people refuse to pick up their litter fixed penalty notices will be issued and if they remain unpaid there will be a zero tolerance policy and prosecutions will follow. 18

Gender pricing: all’s fair in love, war and insurance premiums Have you ever wondered why women tend to pay less for car insurance than men? It is all to do with the practice of genderbased pricing used by insurers to calculate the premiums we pay. But it is a practice that is about to be outlawed from the 21st December thanks to a landmark ruling – a ruling that will soon affect how much you pay for insurance or get from your pension fund. The European Court of Justice has ruled that using differences between men and women as a risk factor in setting premiums for car and medical insurance and pension schemes breaches EU rules on equality. How it will affect you will depend on your age, medical condition and gender, although it is anticipated that more men than women will be better off as a result. If you have a teenage son you will be all too aware of the sky-high cost of insurance. Younger female drivers pay significantly less than their male counterparts because they are less likely to be involved in accidents and therefore, less likely to make a claim. With life insurance and pension annuities, the difference in premiums or benefits can be explained by differences in the life expectancy of men and women.
Owing to their lower mortality risk, women benefit from lower premiums on life insurance, but because they will live longer they will get a lower annuity income from their pension. Policies that are up and running before December 21 will not be affected by the ruling and so if you need cover it would be worthwhile applying now. Medicals will have to be arranged and processed before an application is approved – and this could take up to three months so policies taken out in September could be too late. The savings could be considerable, particularly once you factor in the length of the policy. Experts suggest that the cost of life cover and critical illness rates for both men and women could rise by around 25 per cent (ABI News Release, 1 March 2011). The inability for insurers to use gender will not necessarily make pricing fairer, but it will make insurance more expensive for many and reduce pension income for many too. It’s why you should act sooner rather than later.

Our ancestors commonly believed they then dug themselves into the mud and hibernated until the Spring. The distances covered by these birds can be astonishing. We now know that the majority of our Swallows spend the winter in southern Africa. House Martins travelling with them spend their nights in unoccupied nests. Recently two nests under our eaves provided a night shelter for 12 passing House Martins. The next day they were gone. Quite where House Martins choose to spend the winter is still something of a mystery as very few ringed birds have been recovered away from the British Isles. Of the 10% or so
relocated abroad one or two have been in Nigeria but the whereabouts of most remain unknown. As Swallows now depart, on their behalf, I would like to applaud the clergy and congregations of Rossett’s Anglican and Presbyterian Churches for welcoming the birds that nest in their porches each summer. Swallows are not the cleanest of lodgers. As the chicks develop, in the interests of nest sanitation, they dispose of processed waste (to put it delicately) by aiming their back ends over the rim of the nest and firing! I am delighted to put on record that the spirit of Saint Francis is alive and well in these Christian communities where a pile or two of bird poo is considered a price worth paying for the pleasure of the company of little visitors from half way across the globe. In mid-August parties of Mistle Thrushes heading south are signs of more migration to come as are also noisy parties of geese roaming the countryside in search of food. So far these are resident Canada and Greylag Geese but as September rolls on they will be joined by Pink footed Geese from Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard. Round the northwest coast of Wales we may expect Brent Geese from as far away as arctic Canada.

essential gardening FLOWER GARDEN • Buy spring bulbs for next year. Most bulbs, including daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and small bulbs are best planted this month or in early October. Tulips are better planted towards the end of October • Give evergreen hedges a final trim to ensure they are neat for the winter • Now’s the time to go around your garden collecting seeds from perennials and annuals. Collect seed heads in paper bags and leave them in a warm place to dry for a few days, before cleaning and storing in small envelopes. Some gardens that open to the public offer see-collecting days – a great way to find something unusual. Most seeds are best sown in spring • Sweet pea lovers may find that sowing seed in autumn produces stronger plants. Do not soak the seeds as they are liable to rot. Use Seed and Potting Compost and sow the seeds in root trainers, sweet peas tubes, pots or trays. It has been found that dark coloured seeds germinate well in fairly damp compost, but pale seed require compost that is only just moist. • Cover the containers with glass or put them in a propagator and keep at around 15 C (59 F). When the seedlings appear transfer them to a cold frame. Pinch out the growing tips when the plants are about 10 cm (4 inches) high 34
ROSES • Shrub roses and ramblers can easily be propagated from stem cuttings at this time of year. Take a length of stem about 30cm (12 inches) long and trim it off just below the bottom leaf. Remove the soft tip just above a root joint. Take off all but the top two or three leaves and push the cuttings into a well dug trench in the garden to about half their length. They should be left for 12 months to root and develop • If rambler and climbing roses have got a bit out of hand, spend a bit of time tying them in LAWN • Aerate the lawn with a fork or special tool then apply Scotts Autumn Lawn Food to nourish your lawn through the winter months • You can continue to re-seed bare patches on your lawn. It’s also a good time of year to prepare the ground for sowing a new lawn, while the earth is still warm. FRUIT GARDEN • Cover autumn-fruiting blackberries and raspberries with netting to keep off the birds, but check daily to ensure no animals or birds get trapped • Pick early varieties of apples as soon as they’re ripe and eat them – they won’t keep.

Two of our three Olympic Rowers from The King’s School have completed their London 2012 quest with medals! Tom James, who left King’s in 2002, battled for gold against Australia and the United States in the Men’s Four rowing final to secure his second Olympic gold medal. Team GB have been crowned Olympic champions in the Men’s Four at each of the last four Olympic Games, with Tom and his team defending their title after winning gold in Beijing in 2008. Chris Bartley, who also left King’s in 2002, eased through the heats and semi-final of the Men’s Lightweight Fours, securing silver in the nail-biting final of his first Olympics – only a quarter of a second behind South Africa. Olivia Whitlam, who first learnt to row at King’s at the age of 16, came fifth in the final of the Women’s Eight, after facing strong competition from United States and Canada. James Fair continues his quest for gold with the GB Hockey Team, having reached the quarter-finals. The King’s School headmaster, Mr Chris Ramsey, said; “On behalf of all the pupils and staff at King’s I would like to say how delighted and proud we are of all four of our former pupils representing Great Britain in 36
the Olympics. King’s has a long history of producing elite sportsmen and women. For this Olympics, however, we had a recordbreaking number of former pupils in the GB team. Very few schools in this country have this many and I haven’t heard of any other schools in the North West who can boast this number! Tom James and Chris Bartley both learnt to row at King’s at the age of 13, and Olivia had never rowed until she joined us in the Sixth Form, and soon progressed to make her mark. Everyone at King’s is excited to welcome back our Olympians in the next term, so that they can inspire the next generation of pupils.” Director of Rowing at The King’s School, David Blackham, said; “The King’s School is immensely proud of Tom, Chris and Olivia. Tom and Olivia have been back to King’s on several occasions and spent time with our current rowers. These role models are a fantastic inspiration to our pupils and the fact they started rowing at the King’s boathouse, just as current pupils do today, gives all our rowers a real insight to what you can achieve with hard work and dedication. All three have built not only a rowing career, but an Olympic legacy at the school’s Rowing Club which all our pupils dream of emulating over the current years.”

Rossett Village Festival & BRHS Show The biggest highlight of the day was without question, the weather. It didn’t rain!! In fact there were moments when the sun peeped out. To get us started the pony and traps from the British Driving Society processed round the arena. This year one trap was pulled by four handsome black horses. Next in the parade through the village came the classic cars including a big red double decker London Transport bus. This proved very popular with all the visitors as it stayed for some time so it could be properly explored. The Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor Ian Roberts arrived in a Rolls Royce and declared the Festival open.

FLOODING As you know, houses at the foot of Marford Hill suffered flooding after the exceptional downpour in August. I believe this was made worse by the flow of water off the Wychwood Close site. The plans for this site were approved after an appeal in 2006, but the work has not been completed due to market conditions. The plans included Aco drains to stop rainwater running off the site into the road but these have not yet been installed. I have asked the planning officers to look at this problem urgently. MARFORD PLAY AREA The grass is growing again on the part of the play area where Costains had their huts. It will remain fenced off until the new grass has grown. I hope that the number of footballs kicked into the road will be reduced, now that the Community Council has arranged for a higher than normal fence to be erected. ROAD & PAVEMENT RESURFACING I have been informed that Willow Drive, Hayfield Drive and Birch Drive are in the programme for resurfacing. However, the section of Pant Lane near to Quarry Brow is only to receive “patching” treatment. Following an inspection by an engineer after the work done by Welsh Water was completed, the section of Claypit Lane near to Chester Road is not now in the programme. I will however, continue to press for this stretch of road to be resurfaced. MAES Y PANT / HOLLOWFIELD Plans are now well advanced for some of the footpaths to be laid out this Autumn, after considerable effort in raising grants. Accidents continue to happen to mountain 40
bikers who use the unofficial and dangerous track, ignoring the signs at the entrances which indicate that “extreme” mountain biking is not acceptable in the old quarry and that no excavations can be made without permission. MARFORD AND GRESFORD LUNCHEON CLUB I look forward to having a meal and a chat with our band of regular supporters at our Luncheon Club this Autumn. We meet at Marford Community Centre at 12.30pm on 18th September, 25th September, 9th October, 23rd October, 6th November and 20th November. Don’t forget to book beforehand with Beryl Blackmore on 01978 855691. REPORTING I find the Wrexham Council website www.wrexham.gov.uk an easy way to report potholes, street light problems, dog fouling, fly tipping, missed bin collection etc. During working hours we can also ring the Wrexham Council Contact Centre in Lord St on 01978 298989. GIRORATALIA2 - GRESFORD TO LONDON 16-18 JUNE 2012
226 MILES IN MEMORY OF JONNIE RATCLIFFE, SUPPORTING ‘BEATING BOWEL CANCER’ £9,536.50 Thank you to the Rossett, Marford Valley to Teddington. A large crowd greeted and Gresford communities for this us including the Chief Executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, Mark Flanagan. fantastic support: We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all family, friends and members of our local community for the support we have received during our most recent fundraising venture. 13 riders took to the road in our custom made jerseys to tackle a significant journey from our dear son Jonnie’s Gresford home to the headquarters of ‘Beating Bowel Cancer’ in Teddington, London. The first day was tough going in heavy rain and windy conditions to Kidderminster. After a good night’s sleep we set off over the Cotswolds and the Vale of Evesham to Witney in Oxfordshire. Our final stage was a very pleasant ride along the Thames 42
The riders and support team were magnificent and deserve our special thanks. We had lots of laughs and created fantastic memories and friendship. This was our second cycling venture, the total raised between the two being in excess of £30,000. In the past 4 years friends and family have raised over £65,000. There are collecting tins in the Village Stores in Rossett and Gresford Newsagents. Our very special thanks go to Gwen and Paul in Rossett, and Rob and Anita in Gresford for their on-going support. Ladies, I hope you take time to read this letter because this year, we in the Women’s section of the Royal British Legion find ourselves with a very real problem. In the past we have always been fortunate to have dedicated, hard working people on our committee, but the years are catching up with us and we now desperately need new members to come and support us in our work. We are a small, friendly group who meet once a month at the Legion Club. We organise approximately 5 to 6 functions throughout the year and for the last 2 years we are proud to say we have raised well in excess of £1,500 per year for the Forces’ charities. These charities, supported by the Legion, help to provide financial, social and emotional care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces - both past and present and their families. Founded in 1921, the Legion is not just about those who fought in the 2 World Wars of the last century, but also about those involved in the many conflicts since 1945 and those still fighting for the freedom we enjoy today. OK, so you may say you are not the “committee type” and you don’t have time to attend meetings – that doesn’t matter. All we ask is that you help in some way, be it helping out at functions, donating items for raffles etc. or just coming up with ideas or suggestions for future events – we are desperate for your help as without it our group will be forced to close and our work will stop. Our AGM is to be held in the Legion at Gresford on Tuesday 23rd October 2012 at 7.30pm. Please come along and have a chat. It’s all very informal and there’s a lovely buffet to end the evening. So go on, it only takes a little effort and then the next time you hear one of those dreaded bulletins from Afghanistan, you, like us, can feel proud that in some very small way you did something to help. Thank you for your time to read this letter and we sincerely hope you can help. Members of the Women’s Committee

Planning any b u i l d i n g w o r k?
Whether you are converting your loft, planning an extension or to put some old outbuildings or a barn to good use, or even just replacing your kitchen or bathroom, it's a great opportunity to save some money as well as spending some! With energy prices having risen by a third in the past few years, they are set to rise by a further 50% in the next 4 years according to analysts so it's an excellent time to consider incorporating energy efÞciency into any work you do - because it will be a long time before you're planning to do the work again. This could include simple things such as draught-prooÞng, or adding even more insulation to your loft, but also incorporating additional wall insulation, internally or externally, improving the ßoor insulation, choosing better quality windows, and making your house as airtight as possible. Replacing your old style light bulbs with new energy efÞcient ones, including LED bulbs, and upgrading your electrical appliances, especially your fridge and washer, will make a serious dent in your electricity bill. Upgrading your old gas or oil boiler to a new condensing boiler or if you've got space a wood burning boiler will likewise slash your heating bills. Once you've improved your building fabric, you should also consider installing solar thermal or solar PV panels or bio-mass heating (wood burners!) which as well as rewarding you with attractive government grants will reduce your need to use expensive gas, oil or electricity. Houses which have implemented these kind of solutions have reduced their energy use by 80% - and their carbon footprint by 60%! So as well as helping your pocket this year, next year, and ever after, you are helping the environment too To Þnd out how you could cut your bills by 80% contact:

Gresford Cricket Club’s New Practice Nets Gresford Cricket Club’s new practice nets were officially opened on Sunday 2nd September by Mr Dilwyn Hughes, Chairman of the North Wales Cricket League. Cricket Wales and The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) identified the club for support because of the strength of the club’s junior section and development programme. The club was awarded a grant of £33,655 by the England and Wales Cricket Trust and this, along with £10,245 raised by the club itself, provided the £44,900 necessary to complete the project. Dylan Hughes complimented the club on its fundraising and for all its hard work in providing cricket activities for young and old and was convinced that, given the new facilities and the commitment of the coaching staff, Gresford youngsters will reach the highest level in cricket. Club secretary, John Bell, said: “we were delighted to be awarded the grant. We urgently needed to upgrade our facilities which have given our coaching programme an enormous boost. We have four senior teams and over eighty junior cricketers and we aim to increase the number of girls playing cricket at the club. We work closely with local schools and provide coaching and practice opportunities on behalf of Cricket
Wales". Peter Hybart, director of Cricket Wales, said: “the upgraded practice facilities at Gresford Cricket Club will be welcomed by experienced and junior players alike. The club was awarded the grant because it has worked hard in the development of the game, particularly at junior level and with local schools." Following the official opening ceremony, the club played its annual T20 game in memory of former player, the late Philip Formstone and this was followed by the Women and Girls’ match which rounded off a memorable afternoon for players and spectators. David Lowe, club treasurer, thanked the Gresford Trust saying that: “the Trust has been supportive of the club throughout the application and construction phase and, in particular, in granting permission for the construction on Trust land. Mr Lowe also thanked all those who had worked in the background to help raise the club's contribution to the project, including the officials, players, parents and the general helpers, adding that this was a great community effort characteristic of Gresford and Marford ".
GRESFORD RETIREMENT CLUB The above club meets in the Memorial Club, Gresford from 2pm – 4pm every second and fourth Thursday of the month except January and August when we are closed, So far since March we have visited the Tweedmill Outlet Centre, Afonwen Craft Centre and the Electric Mountain in Snowdonia. Our next day trips will be to the National Memorial Arboretum and Litchfield on June 28 and our annual visit to Llandudno on September 13. There will be one more trip on October 25 to the Llangollen area stopping for lunch at the Moreton Garden Centre and at the Ponderosa Cafe on the Horseshoe Pass.
We have several excellent speakers throughout the year and a special Christmas lunch outing with music, raffle, games and optional dancing at Heatherlands Hotel on the Wirral. Our annual Strawberry Tea on July 12 this year has a Jubilee theme. We have seats still available on the trips at present and these are also available to nonmembers. Please come along to one of our meetings and see what a good time we have, There is no need to join on the first week. For further information contact Secretary on 01978 852735.

Have you ever thought of singing in a Male Voice Choir? The Rhos Orpheus Male Choir has a full programme of concerts for the autumn season which includes an appearance at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in September and in November we'll be closer to home with another Welsh Night at the Golden Lion in Rossett and at the Tenovus Lovelight Concert in Rossett Church. We are always looking for new members and you don't need to be able to read music or speak Welsh. Currently there are four residents of Rossett and Burton in the choir so transport to rehearsals or concerts would be no problem. Why not come to one of our rehearsals and see what it's like? You'll be sure of a very warm welcome. If you are interested, please call Richard Huxley on 01244 570201 or email to richardhuxley@hotmail.com
IMPORTANT NOTICE
We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine. However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery. We still publish them for those people that read the magazine straight away and do so in the hope that a few people will be able to support the event and attend at short notice. A few extra people at a charitable cause makes a huge difference!

Exeo - SEAT’S sporting family holdall There is little doubt that the SEAT Exeo estate car is a well-built, refined family holdall- elegant and with a hint of sportiness from its attractive 18” alloy wheels, door mouldings and stainless steel roof rails. The test car was the 2.0TDI Sport version, with attractive sport seats in its smart but practical interior. Its 1968c.c., four cylinder, turbo diesel engine produced 143 b.h.p. which, mated to a six-speed manual transmission, enabled it to accelerate to 62 m.p.h. in 9.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 130 m.p.h.. Evenso, this large and practical load and passenger carrier could return as much as 56.5 m.p.g. on the Combined Cycle, and its CO2 emissions of 132 g/km requires a V.E.D. of only £120 p.a. Smart and workmanlike you might call the interior with its elegant Alcantara/ leather seats. The electric glass solar sunroof is certainly a sophisticated piece of equipment as its small solar panels generate the electricity to operate the cabin air vents, when detectors find it necessary. This is just one instance of the amount of hi-tech equipment installed in this estate car, which also includes a sophisticated sound system, advanced automatic air conditioning, Bi- xenon Headlamp System and DVD-based Sat. Nav. The luggage space available is huge- as much as 1,354 litres with the rear seat backs folded and the compartment loaded to the ceiling. There are also storage boxes under the front seats! 58
It is a sporty looking estate car with a sporting performance to match, thanks to its sports suspension, powerful brakes and first class road holding, which all adds up to a desirable family car which is so rewarding to drive and ride in. As tested, it cost £23,800. In such vehicles, young passengers do not get bored on long journeys due to such entertainment aids as DVDs players etc, whereas in the old days we had to play I-Spy or listen to stories our parents thought up to save the constant “Are we there, yet?” pleading! The novel ‘Watership Down’ started out this way! However, a very talented telecommunications engineer colleague of mine, who sadly passed away recently, employed his own original thinking to such a problem. Some years ago he took his family for a day out to the North Wales coast in his trusty Vauxhall Viva. His young son and daughter were in the rear seats and, he told me, “They argued and fought with each other all the way there!” “I wasn’t going to put up with that on the return journey, so I got several buckets full of sand, poured it into the rear footwells, and they played happily in it all the way home!” Now, I’ll bet you never thought of doing that, did you?

Got a bee in your bonnet about something? Let us know. email us: info@essentiallyours.co.uk
Dear Essentiallyours I may be having a bit of a rant, so sorry, but our business Your Body Matters Ltd, in Church Street by St Giles, the Ladies Only Gym (Please join if you want to look after your health or lose weight quickly Ladies and bring a friend too!- Ad over) like every other business in Wrexham is feeling this Credit crunch. One of the main issues, I and others can see is a town centre which used to be full of people shopping, local people and others from afar, all of this seems to have gone away. As has the money in the town, and why, I feel because the town has been cut in half between Eagles meadow and island green with not much in the middle. I know it was with good intention building a new exciting and special shopping centre, to attract people from all over, but has this happened, NO. The town centre shops are empty, unless it is a discount store and what’s more so is Eagles meadow! The Town still Trying to achieve city statues, I feel has killed the quaint and prosperous market town of Wrexham. (Only an option) We need help and fast, I have heard Debenhams are thinking of closing and moving on from Eagles meadow. I am not sure how true or if it is true or not, but if they do move, we will have a dead town of two half instead of one with a whole in the middle and things will get worse. I am sure there are lots of people and business in the town and surrounding areas, which have ideas to help the town- this is mine, is it wacky maybe, but it is an idea- forget city status- let’s make Wrexham a popular market town again let’s get the main shops back in the town centre, with Marks & Spenser in the old TJ Hughes, Next could move into the old Top Shop/Peacock’s store and the others in the rest of the now growing number of empty shops (Give them incentives to move back! Make it happen!) Now Eagles meadow lets develop restaurants and bars make it a centre of fun to go to, cafes and entertainment, maybe even a casino, family fun houses and more, a fair it would be a great place to go for the day with the family and even better for night out with your friends. With one or two night clubs, there too and a couple of hotels. Easy to police and control at night with everyone in the same place, in the day people would go there to eat, for business meetings and more. The town would be busy again. And the Meadow renowned the place to go for the best night or day around. The town would be a nice and pleasant market town again, with little shops and cafes, like it was when people used to love to visit and spend money and they would come again. It would create jobs and cash in the town and all business would benefit. This is my idea, I am sure you and others have ideas and maybe better ones, the main thing something has to be done before it is too late, So Help, if we don’t no one will! Make the changes before it is too late! Steve Howarth

Dear Essentiallyours I’d like to bring this to the attention of your readers for the benefit of others who may leave animals and birds unattended in their gardens. On Friday 29th June 6 indian white fantails were stolen in daylight from an aviary. The theft was witnessed by a passer by and the van registration number passed to the police who took statements from myself and the witness. Residents should be aware that pet thieves are in the area. Name supplied
I read your introductory page last month in Essentiallyours. Whilst I enjoy reading the magazine and generally find it to be a useful source of information I would like to pick you up on the following: “Despite some national flood disasters, we’ve been okay locally” I’m sure you have and yes the Alyn hasn’t burst its bank into Rossett but I’m staggered that there is no mention of the hardship that this extreme weather is bringing to the local farming community, with fields being swamped, crops being ruined and livestock having to be housed indoors (I’m sure you realise this only normally happens in the winter time). Yes, there IS a local farming community within your readership area of Rossett, Gresford and Marford, perhaps it surprises you to learn this. For the time being at least agriculture still does play a role within this community; indeed this area is such a desirable place to live partly because it is semi rural with the pretty landscape being looked after by the local farmers; you may want to consider giving it an occasional mention.
