your life, your home, your community. Well it’s been a busy month and as usual I can’t say I’m feeling Christmassy just yet. Mind you we’re dealing with dementia in the family at the moment which is challenging and high maintenance to say the least. It’s not me, might I add, although I sometimes wonder! In addition to that, 2 things have dampened my normal cheerful spirit this month, and temporarily I have lost my faith in human nature. One thing being the problems with the delivery in the Cromar Crescent area. Thank you to the locals there that have kept me informed me about the non delivery over the last few months. I’m happy to say this has now been resolved. And secondly, as you all know lots of things in the magazine are community and charity orientated, and are printed free of charge. We’re not perfect here at Essentiallyours HQ and get a lot of requests for things all the time, and now and again because we are human, things can get missed. If this happens I’m sad to have to print that this is purely an oversight, and I would hope most people would realise this automatically. So please be rest assured there are no political or personal reasons why this happens. If you are missed out please bring it to my

attention. There is no need to ring me on a Sunday and no need for any impolite emails demanding a public apology, especially if we do this for free for you, and especially if you have not waited for any explanation first. And of course we are always sorry and disappointed ourselves if we have missed something out. Douglas has been a bit lazy for the last few months and hasn’t had time to put pen to paper or so he says. He’s still around though, so don’t worry and promises to write soon. Perhaps he’s been supervising the work at Rossett Mill. It’s looking so much better, it’s amazing what a lick of paint can do! Mind you I ‘d just driven through Rossett the other day and admired the mill looking lovely and then saw a young lad on Chester Road drop a can on someone’s verge outside their house, just before the turn off for Cromar crescent. It’s a shame I was driving and didn’t get chance to stop and have a little word with him. So annoying! Enjoy November and I ‘ll see you all next month when I’ll be feeling more Christmassy!

All the best, Jill

The developers have not been able to secure access to reinstate the original drain, therefore WCBC will have to commence our scheme which will involve putting in drainage along Darland Lane. All access arrangements are in place and we are currently resolving the issues of trees with Tree Preservation Orders on them.

raise funds for the Village Hall we are holding a Grand Christmas Concert in Darland School featuring the Rhos Orpheus Male Voice Choir, ably supported by students from Darland School. An opportunity to enjoy a great evening on Saturday December 7th at 19.00 hrs. Tickets available from The Village Stores, Rossett. The Spar, Station Road. Hair by Nia, Station Road, or by phoning 571155 or 571264. Please support your local community and enjoy a great concert.

Darland Golf Course. I have received numerous calls and e-mails expressing concern as to the future of Darland Golf Course, which is currently up for sale. In planning terms the land is designated as Green Barrier and a Special Landscape Area. I have made it clear that I would strenuously oppose any application for any housing on this site. The visual and amenity aspects are an important part of our Village and must be protected.

Network Rail. The on-off decision to dual the Chester to Wrexham railway line is now on again. I am assured that this is the final decision and the Welsh Government Minister has now approved the funding. The work is scheduled to commence in the Spring of next year. I am being kept informed of any developments that will affect Rossett. At one stage the former station site was earmarked for equipment storage; clearly there are access issues and Station Road is not suitable for heavy commercial vehicles.

Darland School Transport. The recent decision by the Council to withdraw funding for discretionary school transport has created significant pressures on the scheduled bus service at peak school times. The Head and his staff and Governors are conscious of the problems being caused and are working to find a solution. I am having discussions with all parties to see what can be done to resolve the problem and will be meeting with the managing director of Arriva. Date for your diary. Superfast Fibre Broadband. The good news for Rossett is that our exchange (which originally was left out of the original scheme) has now been brought forward to Quarter 2 of 2014.Work will therefore take place between July and September of next year. This is important for all users but particularly the many businesses that we have in our community. Community Council Web Site. Thanks to the efforts of Cllr Hadyn Jones, Rossett Community Council has an excellent new web site. This follows an initiative from the Welsh Government and Rossett has been quick to respond. Back in July of this year a group of local youths along with the assistance of myself PCSO Troy Williams, Peter Cade and Brian Doyle have spent their time cleaning and repainting the local shelter in the Rossett playground. Here is a picture of everyone busy at work, may I pass on my thanks to all that were involved and thank the Rossett councillors for supplying funds to cover the costs of paint and essentials’.

From speaking to local residents over recent weeks it has become apparent that dog fouling is becoming a real cause for concern in the Rossett area. Residents inform me that locals regularly take their dogs for walks and do not pick up their dogs mess. I have recently been communicating with the enforcement officers at Wrexham council to tackle this issue. Myself and the enforcement officers at Wrexham council will issue a fixed penalty notice to any dog owner who is seen to leave their dogs poo without picking it up and either taking it home or disposing of it in a nearby bin. Please may I ask all dog owners to ensure that they dispose of their dogs poo in the correct way.

ETHICAL INVESTMENTS The week of the 13th to the 19th October was promoted by the UK Sustainable Investment Finance Association as National Ethical Investment Week the aim being to promote the concept of green and ethical options when it comes to people’s financial decisions. This has highlighted the growing awareness of Socially Responsible Investments (SRI) amongst people in general and the growth of SRI or ethical Funds. One of the main providers of ethical Investments in the UK are Aberdeen Asset Management who has over 20 years’ experience in running ethical funds and have built up a substantial research capability in this area. They also consult external researchers and Nongovernmental organisations to keep up to date with developments in this field. Their objective is to avoid investing in countries, companies or industries whose businesses offend against generally accepted ethical criteria. Amongst the companies that will be avoided on ethical grounds are ones that are involved in alcohol or tobacco production or involved in gambling and pornography. In addition they will avoid companies involved in intensive farming and product testing on animals. Companies where their facilities in the developing world do not meet internationally recognised standards on employment and safety would also be avoided.

On the positive side they would specifically be looking to invest in companies that have a positive approach to environmental issues and sustainable resources and with a high level of openness on all aspects of their business activities. Companies that recognise their responsibility to have positive impacts and adopt socially responsible business practices can make a significant contribution to society. In today’s rapidly changing global economy, there is growing evidence that responding to stakeholder expectations and anticipating and managing social and environmental concerns contributes to long-term success. Companies operating with integrity towards their employees, the community and the environment will enjoy comparative advantage in the long run Ethical investments account for £8.6b of investments as at the end of August 2013 (source Investment Management Association) but this represents only 1.25% of total funds under management which is the same as in 2012 so whilst there is more interest in socially responsible issues this is still to work its way to mainstream investments. If you are interested in knowing more about ethical investments or the criteria used by Aberdeen on behalf of St. James’s Place please contact us for a factsheet.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. Michael Edwards Marford Councillor

Planning Applications There is no news yet about the future of the Red Lion car park. The applicants have six months from the date of planning permission refusal in June to lodge an appeal. Maes Y Pant On one of the volunteer days in October, the brash left from tree-felling was cleared and chipped. Red flags were also put out to mark where dog fouling on paths had occurred. More help is always needed in the old quarry, clearing overgrown copses and paths. Join us at “Volunteer Events” at 10am on 13th November and 1st December. It is very enjoyable exercise and some of us have been given expert tuition in safe operation of brushcutters and a chipper. Marford Community Centre The new flooring for the community centre can now finally be laid, thanks to a grant of £1,500 by Gresford Community Council toward the £2,000 to be raised by the Management Committee. The emergency exit will also be brought up to modern standards. A business plan has been prepared by MCC (the group who wish to take over the running of the community centre), with the help of a condition survey, commissioned by the Community Council. Passing Services to Communities A scrutiny committee of Wrexham Council will be discussing community centres and play areas on November 13th. These could be closed if neither the Community Council nor another local organisation will take them

on. Marford Play Area and Allington Park Play Area are already run by Gresford Community Council. The Newtown Play Area is at risk of closure. Thoughtless Parking PCSOs have been trying to discourage inconsiderate parking near to the Rofft and All Saints schools. Marford and Gresford Luncheon Club The Luncheon Club is meeting again on 12th and 26th November, 10th and17th December at 12.30pm at Marford Community Centre. Most people book their meal at the previous meeting, or you can ring Beryl Blackmore on 01978 855691. Roads and Pavements, Street Lights etc. Main fuse failures have again caused blackouts in Wynnstay Lane, Claypit Lane, Meadows View and Sandrock Road. I hope that Scottish Power can sort out the problems once and for all. Please continue to report failed lights and any street problems on the Council website www.wrexham.gov.uk (click “report it”) or by ringing 01978 298989. You can also report potholes, dog-fouling etc. this way.

Collared Dove Buzzard in flight © Hugh Linn

Collared Doves are now widespread. This year’s Big Garden Birdwatch found them to be the tenth most commonly observed species in parks and gardens. It may surprise those who have known Collared Doves all their lives that prior to 1950 they had never been seen in the British Isles. In the 1930s they began to expand their range north westerly from the Balkans and in 1955 were first recorded as breeding birds in East Anglia. Since then they have spread to Iceland and by 1982 had crossed the Atlantic and established themselves in the United States. The UK population continued to increase steadily up to 1996 but since then numbers have dropped. The reason for their apparent decrease is thought to be competition from Woodpigeons leaving their traditional woodland habitat in favour of easier pickings in built-up areas. Urban Woodpigeons can be remarkably tame when out of range of their traditional foes. In towns they are unlikely to be shot or killed by a hawk but they are at risk of being run over or hit by a bus. On 26 September there was a flock of around

16

100 Stock Doves feeding on recently harvested grain in Honkley while a few fields away some 500 Black-headed Gulls and 200 Jackdaws followed a plough in search of newly exposed earthworms. On 13 October 60 Lapwings fed unconcernedly in the company of 9 Buzzards. Normally the presence of even one bird of prey would have been enough to spook the Lapwings but on this occasion they obviously realised the Buzzards imposed no threat as they too were only interested in worms. There is something slightly incongruous about Buzzards (which resemble small eagles) grubbing around for worms like domestic hens. 4 Teals, our smallest ducks, have joined resident Mallards on Darland pool. One female Mallard is unusually pale with feathers the colour of milky coffee. This is a pigmental aberration known as erythrism. The wandering Ross’s Goose has reappeared locally. It was seen with Greylags on Gresford Flash on October 10th and has also been spotted flying over Burton.

Dietetics team shortlisted for a Quality in Care Diabetes Award 2013 A team from the Dietetic Department at the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has been shortlisted for a prestigious Quality in Care Diabetes 2013 Award in the Best Innovation in Service provision category. The Dietetics team, led by Elaine Jennings, Specialist Diabetes Dietitian based at Deeside, have implemented a new referral system to enable newly-diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes patients to access a 2 hour structured education session, on a ‘group’ approach quickly and easily. The average wait is less than 4 weeks from referral and there are places available to meet the demand of all newly diagnosed Type 2 patients.

to self-manage this chronic disease, and friends/ partners and carers are encouraged to attend the meetings “The importance of sound knowledge and information at the right time is crucial following a diagnosis of diabetes. These groups offer early intervention and allow time to explore the fundamentals of diabetes management that a clinic appointment cannot always afford. They offer excellent efficiency of dietetic time and have the added advantage of the group dynamic.” said Steve Grayston, Head of Service in Dietetics.

The original programme was written by Elaine, and the groups, which started in Deeside back in 2009, were rolled out across North East Wales up to 2012 and have now spread to other areas across North Wales, and by early 2014 it is aimed to have additional groups in Dolgellau and South Denbighshire.

The Groups are also a hit with the patients, with consistently high uptake. Mr. Edward Blythen from Coedpoeth put on his evaluation form “Relaxed, easy to listen to advice, good company and also had a good laugh. Good advice given, felt I could discuss my problems with ease. I now understand more about diabetes and what to do to help have a longer and healthier life.”

This group approach, which are delivered by dietetics in partnership with GP practices, are seen as the starting point of patients being able

The winner of the Quality in Care Diabetes Awards will be announced at an awards evening in Guilford on 10th October.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD

Missing article Factors beyond my control meant that no October report was published but the September’s omission was down to the new lady in my life! Hannah Phoebe was born in mid-August weighing 6lbs 3ozs.and is our first grandchild and I therefore missed the deadline for input. May I thank the great neighbours who kept a watching brief on “Chez Bailey” during our absence and to many friends for their cards, good wishes and gifts. Alyn Family Doctors. Alyn Family Doctors have approached local councillors about possible ideas for the future of the Practice. With about 12,500 patients spread evenly across Gresford, Rossett and Llay, their current accommodation is cramped in terms of parking, personnel and record storage. I am exploring the Gresford parking issue with community council colleagues. The doctors would like to develop a “main site” in one of the villages with the others being assured as branch surgeries. I shall be involving the relevant council officers in the matter but your views are crucial in our future discussions and I would welcome any suggestions. Youth Services In March 2010 a scrutiny committee chaired by my predecessor, Councillor Blackwell, looked at the youth services and set up a working party which reported in December 2011. Its findings were subsequently adopted last year and resulted in the closure of Gresford Youth Club and more community based services (details on www.youngwrexham.co.uk). I do not intend that there should be no further communication and information on this matter and therefore I am having a “youth services’ surgery” in Gresford Post Office on Monday 18th November between 4.00 - 5.30pm to gather views and give information on current and future services.Young people especially welcome. Planning concern I share Councillor Mike Edwards’ frustration 20

As members we scrutinize, amend, approve or reject, in the context of a Unitary Development Plan (which the councillors at the time failed to update in 2011), but we are not builders. There are over two thousand dwellings in Wrexham (April 2013) with approval but where building has not commenced so there is certainly an issue. Rest assured, however, that I will continue to press and question the planners. by Miss Viv Lavis-Jones

In November 1887 a fatal accident to a young girl from Bangor Isycoed was reported in the Wrexham Advertiser. She was eighteenyear old Maud Johnson and worked as a housemaid at Hafod Alyn, the residence of the Chief Constable of Denbighshire, Mr Leadbetter. An inquest was held before the coroner, Mr B H Thelwell, two days later, with Mr C W Townsend as foreman of the jury. It appears that about four o’clock in the afternoon Maud said she was going to clean the ceiling light over the entrance hall of Hafod Alyn. The light in question was of frosted glass set under a skylight to form a ceiling light and there were boards to put across the opening in the stairwell at a height of between 20-30ft from the floor that were left upstairs for that purpose. However it appears that she had failed to take this precaution, and instead of kneeling on the boards she had knelt directly on the glass and the frame itself. Elizabeth Manuel, another employee was passing below in the hall at the time and saw Maud’s shadow on

the glass. She shouted to the girl to get off the glass and rushed up the stairs but before she was half way up she heard a crash and going back down found the housemaid lying on her back on the floor. She had apparently struck her head on an oak table in the hall, breaking it, before falling to the floor. Margaret MacDonald, a personal maid, said that she had last seen Maud just over an hour before in the kitchen and was in the pantry at the time when she heard the crash. On rushing to the hall she found the maid lying half sideways on the floor and bleeding from the back of her head. She was still alive but she did not speak and she saw her breathe twice after she reached her. She thought at first that she had fallen from a ladder in the hall until she saw the broken glass and looked up. None of the framework of the light had given way just the glass. The jury returned a verdict of ‘Accidental death’ and the coroner stressed the need to take all possible precautions to prevent similar accidents again.

After the long-awaited launch of the book ‘The History of Bangor Isycoed’ in the village hall on 26th October copies will be made available to purchase from the Middle Shop, Heads Above, Jones the Computer, King St, Wrexham and Johnsons’ Basket Shop all in Bangor, price £18. The book contains over 400 pages and 300 pictures, photographs and illustrations and is the result of eight years research and all the profit will be donated to St. Dunawd’s church, Bangor. 26

essential gardening Plant spring bulbs - Continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs, making sure you place them at the right depth. Tidy borders - Any perennials past their best can be cut right down, clearing away remains and adding them to the compost heap. Plant new hedges - Container-grown evergreens and conifers planted now will get a really good start in life, so complete new hedging projects as soon as possible. Divide perennial asters - Perennial asters like Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ produce striking display of bold daisy flowers from late summer for an attractive autumn show. Lift and divide clumps every second or third year after removing old flowering stems and replant the new sections, watering them in thoroughly. Wallflowers - Fill gaps in borders with wallflowers for a great blaze of spring colour. Space them so that they will grow into one another and, for extra impact, plant tulips with flowers in a contrasting colour between them. Lawn care - Spike lawns using a hollowtined aerator and brush grit into the holes to improve drainage. Frost protection - Watch out for frost, which can bring a sudden end to fading summer displays. Bring tender plants and crops under cover or, if time runs short,

keeping a few sheets of fleece handy to throw over plants or containers can give some temporary protection. Collect fallen leaves - Make light work of your autumn leaf collection by investing in a vacuum for the garden. Many have an internal shredder blade fitted that chops up the leaves as they pass into the collecting bag. This helps to speed up decomposition into friable leaf-mould. Seeds - Saving seed not only spares you expense, but can produce novel results. Try leaving the last of the sweet peas on their plants to set seed and develop pods. Once ripe, they can be picked and the seed removed, cleaned and stored. Alternatively, sow sweet peas now for early blooms. Seed can also be saved from crops such as peas and runner beans. Green manure - Cover areas of bare soil with green manure crops, especially in the kitchen garden. Field beans and winter rye can be sown well into November. Both these green manures can be dug into the soil in spring, helping to improve its structure and increase its organic content. They are equally valuable in breaking down clay soils and adding heart to sandy ones. Houseplants - Should be watered less frequently as temperatures drop.

HAVE A HAPPY HOMEOPATHIC CHRISTMAS! While Christmas still seems a long way off, it won’t be long before we are making frenzied preparations! Most people look forward to the celebrations with a mixture of excitement and dread! Why not give homeopathy a try this year and see what a difference it will make! If Santa was a homeopath these are the remedies he would be putting down your chimney this year…………….. • The build-up to Christmas can create feelings of stress, overload and irritability. Then Christmas arrives and you treat yourself to all your favourite foods and drink, especially alcohol and rich fatty foods. Not surprisingly these will often upset a sensitive system. Nux Vomica, the king of hangover and indigestion remedies, is bound to come in handy for ailments caused by over indulgence. • Christmas often means spending more time with people you normally avoid! If you dread the thought and are the type who soldiers on, seething quietly under your breath until it's all over for another year, Staphisagria is the remedy. Either all that silent resentment will melt away or you'll be able to say what needs to be said and clear the air! • Coffea Crudum is excellent if you are the type of person who lies awake with thoughts racing round and round your head. I often prescribe it for this type of insomnia. On Christmas Eve, if you have a little one who just can't sleep for excitement, a dose of coffea at bed-time should do the trick! • Arnica is a great remedy as a pick-me-up when you're simply over-worked and over-tired, legs and feet aching after a hard day's shopping. A dose of arnica and a hot bath will completely revive you. Arnica is also effective on bumps and bruises so you could need it for anything - from a fall off the ladder whilst you reach for Christmas decorations to a toddler bumping his head on the coffee table! • Phosphoric Acid is brilliant if you are burnt-out, partied out and worn-out! It's also a saviour for kids who've been to sleep-over’s where sleep was the last thing on their minds and they've been consuming sugary food and fizzy drinks. A couple of doses will bring them back to earth and calm them down! These remedies should be available from your local chemist or health store, or order online or by telephone from a homeopathic pharmacy or see your homeopath. For the purposes described, the 30c potency is fine - take up three times a day until things improve.

PRIDE OF BRITAIN

The weekend in London in readiness for The Pride of Britain Awards all started with a nice surprise for Sue, I booked Dirty Dancing last minute and blagged a VIP package which included use of the private Love lounge, champagne reception and a row 3 seat. I only went because Sue wanted to see it but I am glad I did as I thought it was awesome. What happened last night though possibly eclipsed just about any event I have ever attended. What a humbling experience it was to represent Wales at the Pride of Britain Awards. I am featured on ITV Wales tonight at 6pm but tune in at 8pm for this extraordinary tear jerker of a night. Being a runner up in the Local Community Awards to the amazing Anne Scarfe was no insult, I shared her company all night and she was a darling of a lady. There was a humbling story behind every award but all of those involving children took the biscuit. There was an amazing tribute to the Justice for the 96 and campaigner Margaret Aspinall had a standing ovation. I have now returned home rushing to link up with Migs Hollings at my local Nightingale House Hospice as I have something

really special to auction as Dalglish, Carra, John Barnes, Michael Owen and John Bishop all signed a spare shirt I just happened to have with me. I am donating it to Migs to support her forthcoming fundraising venture to conquer Everest. Have a shufty at this link and see whether you can lend some support as well. Look up and please visit www.justgiving.com/migs-base-camp The whole trip, 1st Class travel, taxi's, accommodation at the Cumberland Hotel is all at ITV's expense so gladly I did not have to dip into my pension !!! All this came about because I have some great friends and amazing ex colleagues at Airbus who helped with almost every ounce of fundraising I have done but eclipsing that of course is a fantastic family who have given me a prefect landing into retirement. Thinking of you all fondly. Phil PS Tony Jacklin was not too impressed when I said to him what a delight it was to see him on Strictly Come Dancing. I said one of my sons said to me on Sunday, "Dad having watched Tony Jacklin dancing, perhaps you are not that bad a dancer after all !!!

Cold Caller

WARNING Cold callers trying to sell treatments to walls and roofs are in the area and Trading Standards are warning residents to be on their guard. They have been contacted by householders to tell them that cold callers have made claims, backed up with information leaflets, that the treatments will improve insulation, save energy, reduce damp and protect from flooding. In cases seen by Trading Standards costs have ranged from nearly £4000 to nearly £6000. Typically the caller will be keen to sign up there and then for work to be done and take a deposit. Many householders will think twice before committing to this level of expenditure but some residents in our community will be very susceptible to this approach and may even sign up just to get rid of the caller. Trading Standards are urging everyone to be alert and to look out for their more vulnerable friends, family and neighbours. If you get a call, or find out that callers have been to anyone you know, please report it. The law provides a “cooling off” period for cold calling which gives the householder a short time to change their mind after signing.

If you, or anyone you know has signed up, there may still be time to cancel, even if work has already started or been completed. In some circumstances there will also be a right to recover money paid even if work has already been done. For help in this situation, and to report callers, ring Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 08454 040506 (040505 for Welsh) Trading Standards ask everyone to think very carefully before signing up for or buying anything from people who cold call at your door. Don’t be pressured into buying or signing up for anything. Give yourself time to think about it and don’t be swayed by price reductions that are only available if you sign up on the spot. For more advice contact Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 08454 040506 If you have any concerns for your personal safety or if you are having difficulty getting a salesman to leave your home call Police on 101. For general consumer information contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06

Every year, firefighters in Wales attend over 2,000 accidental fires in the home. Dave Roberts, Partnership Manager with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said “Of those 2,000 fires at least 1,000 of them start in the kitchen. Most people are lucky enough to get out alive, but hundreds suffer injuries and too many are still lost to home fires. Most people, if they think, can change something about their daily routines at home to reduce the chances of having an accidental fire.” Follow North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s 12 top tips for fire safety at home: 1. F it smoke alarms on each level in your home. Test them once a week. Keep them free from dust. NWFRS will fit these for free. 2. M ake a fire action plan so that everyone in your home knows how to escape if there’s a fire. 3. K eep the exits from your home clear so that people can escape if there’s a fire. Make sure that everyone in your home can easily find the keys for doors and windows. 4. Take extra care in the kitchen – never leave young children alone in the kitchen. Never leave cooking unattended. 5. Take extra care when cooking with hot oil. Never use a chip pan – use a deep-fat

fryer which is controlled by a thermostat. 6. N ever leave lit candles in rooms that nobody is in or in rooms where children are on their own. Make sure candles are in secure holders on a surface that doesn’t burn and are away from any materials that could burn. 7. M ake sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly and are disposed of carefully, and never smoke in bed. 8. G et into the habit of closing doors at night. If you want to keep a child’s bedroom door open, close the doors to the lounge and kitchen. This may well help save their life if there is a fire. 9. D on’t overload electrical sockets. Remember: one plug for one socket. 10. K eep matches and lighters where children can’t see or reach them. 11. Take special care when you’re tired or when you’ve been drinking. 12. D on’t leave the TV or other electrical appliances on standby as this could cause a fire. Always switch them off and unplug when not in use. Keep responsible - Keep safe ! North Wales Fire and Rescue Service offers free home fire safety checks and will install smoke alarms where necessary - to request a visit contact our 24 hour hotline on freephone 0800 169 1234 or e-mail cfs@nwales-fireservice.org.uk

Lavister Chapel House Group held their final event in Pulford Village Hall on Saturday 19th October.

It was a fitting tribute to all who have helped us raise £23,000 over the past twenty years, and we thank all who have supported us. Jean Fearnall-Williams gave an uplifting concert under the title of “Encore” which sent everyone home with a smile on their faces. Jean was accompanied by David Bird on the piano, and DerickHewson, baritone, sang with Jean for some of the songs. Thank you again for your support over the years. Got a bee in your bonnet about something? Let us know. email us: info@essentiallyours.co.uk

Dear Hugh, Having read Essentiallyyours for a number of years I have come to the view that you seem to be a genuinely good guy with a lot of good intention. (Although I’m a little bit disappointed about the lack of action with regards to the horrendous Armco railings outside the Watermill – all gone a little quiet on this matter it would seem) What I do wish to protest about, and talking to many other residents they share a similar view, is the ridiculous crusade you seem to have towards making cars travel at walking pace from Lavister through to Marford. Firstly, we have the 20 mph speed bumps in Rossett which simply aren’t necessary. I know there is a park where children play but there is no direct access from that park out onto the road, so I question the validity of this scheme. This was followed by an even dafter project to put speed bumps the length of Darland Lane. This area has never been subject to ‘speed kids’ and it is a physical impossibility for any car to exceed 30 miles an hour at the location of the bumps just off the Chester Road or at the other end on Gamford Lane. This further development you mention in the October issue of having a further 20 mile an hour limit outside Darland School really takes the biscuit! Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this a secondary school where the vast majority of the pupils are teenagers/young adults? I think these pupils are of an age where they should realise – guess what? You step out in front of cars you get hurt! Hugh, you look to try and do a lot of good in the community and I sincerely hope that you will block any proposed housing developments on the Darland golf course – which I’m sure is an issue that’s going to come up in the near future. However, this silly nanny state attitude towards speed limits does not curry favour with an awful lot of people. It is irritating unnecessary and most of all in times of cut backs a wasteful drain on the county budget. Kind regards D.Williams (resident of Rossett Park)

NEWS

Thanks to Phil Jones

At a major national Judo event in Coventry recently, 8 year old Jack Poole from Marford who attends the Rofft School was the successful winner of the junior boys tournament and was awarded a Gold Medal. Jack really did punch above his weight and fought against boys much older than himself. The success came soon after his debut at a Welsh Tournament in Cardiff where he secured a Bronze Medal participating in his first ever competition.

Over 120 guests attended the annual Gresford Athletic Hall of Fame event at the Wrexham Ramada recently and were well and thoroughly entertained by ex Liverpool Football Club icon Jimmy Case and comic Jamie Sutherland. The main focus of the event is to recognise the unrelenting commitment of former players and officials have made at the club. This year, Dave Johnson, Mike Gronnow, Mike Hughes and Steve Harris all received Club Legend awards for their various roles at the club. Dave Johnson performed the unique role of player secretary through the late 50’s and 60’s which is an amazing

achievement. Club stalwart Mike Gronnow has been at the club since leaving school and is still one of the first names on the team sheet on match days and he has clocked up over 500 game for the Club. Committee member Mike Hughes is renowned for serving up with his wife Olwen the best after match refreshments in North Wales, he is also an intrepid fundraiser at the club and his loyalty stretches over 3 decades. There was a warm applause when club secretary Steve Harris stepped up to receive his award as Steve for many years now has been the backbone and jack of all trades at the club and quite a workaholic.

Those beautiful Bentleys One of the most pleasurable events on my motoring calendar is a Press driving event at the Bentley factory at Crewe, and even though I have been there many times before, I still get a shiver of excitement as I turn right into Pym’s Lane where the factory is situated. I did this just a few weeks ago, and was surprised to see some major construction on the right hand side which will apparently be Bentley’s huge new showroom( something on the lines of Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands), where customers can visit to see the company’s full range of cars in suitably plush surroundings. Mind you, the array of Bentley Continental models arranged as usual in front of the familiar Bentley office block has always been so very impressive, but there is a problem if the weather is inclement, which the new building will solve. What a spectacle these Continental models made in such a wonderful and unique range of colours. The Continental production line moves at a far slower speed than in ‘normal’ car factories, but the flagship Bentley Mulsanne line moves even slower, as it takes some 400 hours to build this superb car- 200 hours of which are spent in the interior trim and equipment, and the result is not just a car, but a work of art. Mind you, this is only for the ‘standard’ model, because many purchasers want their own special choice of equipment ,trim and body colours etc, and that takes much more time and much more money. 52

by Terry Davies

The Mulsanne four-door saloon with a 506 b.h.p. 6.75 litre V8 engine costs from £224,700. The Bentley technical exxperts were anxious to show us their new Continental flagship, the four door Flying Spur saloon, and on closer examination, it certainly IS a beautiful car, powered by the 6.0 litre W-12 engine which develops 616 b.h.p. allowing the car to accelerate to 60 m.p.h. in only 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 200 m.p.h. The smoothness and power of this engine, particularly when mated to a 12 speed automatic transmission, gives such a tremendous performance so silently and effortlessly, while you are cosseted in the delectable interior. It costs £149,900 in ‘standard’ form, and £151,340 in Mulliner spec. The 4.0 litre V8-engined Continental GT 2-door coupe is certainly no sluggard either, with a performance very similar to the Flying Spur, costing £123,850. Put your foot down in this model and the car leaps forward, but this time with the rasp of the sporting Audi-sourced V8 engine on song. All such a brilliant range of cars, but when my wife asked about the exclusive new Barnato leather handbag, you had to put your name down on a waiting list for that- and arrange a small mortgage for the cost no-doubt! She was surprised to learn that the top technical men we spoke to didn’t seem to know too much about handbags. Funny that!

Don’t see red this festive season. Cut and control what you spend and next year won’t be about getting back to black. 1. Draw up a budget listing what you can afford to spend on presents, decorations and entertaining and stick to it. 2. Don’t panic buy at the last minute. Purchase presents month by month and take advantage of special offers and so on. 3. Get specific items for specific people. Make a note of who they’re for - and don’t forget where you’ve stashed them. 4. If you’ve got a group of friends who buy for each other, do a Secret Santa instead and set a reasonable ceiling for the present value. 5. If you know what you want, shop around for gifts. Use price comparison websites, such as Dealtime, Kelkoo or Pricerunner, even if armed with the results of your research, you then head off to the high

street to do your actual purchasing. Go to www.dealtime.co.uk, www.kelkoo.co.uk or www.pricerunner.co.uk. 6. Giving doesn’t have to cost money. Think about what people would really appreciate and give vouchers for babysitting, dog walking, car washing or decorating. 7. Make your own wrapping paper and gift tags. Keep them simple and sophisticated and you’ll come across as arty, not tight. 8. Do your own decorations. Go for a country walk and collect pine cones or make dual purpose edible decorations that look and taste good. 9. If you’re away over the festive season save on energy and bills by switching off and unplugging electrical equipment. 10. Turn down your heating, just a little bit, but not so low that your pipes freeze and then burst if there’s a cold spell.
