your life, your home, your community. Back to normal now after the summer. I’m sure lots of families are breathing a sigh of relief now the children are going back to school, I can understand that. I think I said the other month the weather seems to dictate how well the economy does, well it certainly seems to at small business level. So it’s pleasing to hear that the sun has led people back to the high streets this year. It’s not a surprise we all stayed at home last year what with all that rain and avoided going shopping unnecessarily. Most small businesses seem to be doing a little better this year in general which is encouraging, but the odd ones have had a quieter summer where probably the lovely weather has worked against their particular service. Oh I don’t know, but I know this much having a lovely summer makes the world look a better place! So I hope you’re all feeling refreshed and ready for action.

knocked back for planning application on the red lion car park, and no news of an appeal at this stage, and the threat to Marford community centre has been and gone. There has been some concern expressed at Darland Golf having gone up for sale and whether it may end up as a development site, but Hugh Jones, local councillor has indicated this is green land and unlikely, so hopefully no need to worry on this front. I’ve noticed activity at Rossett Mill and Hugh did mention there are new owners with whom he is soon to meet so I look forward to hearing a little more about their plans for the mill. Sorry Hugh I’m using your name in vain this month! As always get in touch if you know of anything I haven’t covered that needs to be shared. Enjoy September and let’s hope it’s a sunny month.

All quiet on the western front as they All the best, Jill say, and nothing major happening locally that I have stumbled across. It’s all gone quiet since the convenience store was

Rossett Village Festival

Saturday 24th August at Darland Sports Centre. Last Saturday morning in Rossett the rain stopped and slowly the sky cleared and by the time we opened the gates for the start of our Festival the sun was shining and a large number of people turned out to enjoy the day.The Mayor of Wrexham, David Bithell, was able to declare the Festival open on a dry arena. This was our 9th Festival and we didn’t want it spoilt by rain. We had a great variety of transport onoffer. Janet Williams from the British Driving Society gave delighted children a ride around the arena in her pony and trap. Others had the joy of sitting on their own pony with rides by the Cae Hic Livery and Riding Centre. The bright paintwork of the Kit Cars of the Northwest Area Tiger Owners (NWTOC)shone in the sunshine. They had “roared” through the village and around arena before sitting peacefully on the grass where Dads could inspect and juniorscould sit in the car for their photograph. The big red Routemaster Bus competed with our big blue buses giving people rides through the village. The Classic Cars were not to be out- done and stood proudly in their positions. The Dog Show was as popular as ever with new classes attracting many entrants, 51 in all. “The Fastest Biscuit Eater” was great fun said judge Sara. The Best in Show was won by Ian’s lemon cocker spaniel, Lola. The Burton and Rossett Horticultural Society was holding their 64th Annual Flower Show with even more entries than last year. The BRHS Show Secretary, Carolyn Bates, said she was very pleased by the number of exhibitors and entries for the show, over 500. This is the highest they have been for a number of years with a large number of entries in the dahlia classes. The Banksian Medal was awarded to John (Shep) Evans from Llangollen. The junior sections also had a large number of entries with some inventive monsters made out of fruit and vegetables, hand painted eggs and photographs.

We had the usual range of side shows where the star player was Lesley Griffith, our Welsh Assembly Member, who won a coconut at the Coconut Shy. She was very pleased. “First time ever” she said. The list all the displays of sports, children’s activities (Carrots the Clown again waved her magic spell on the little ones), stalls of local charities, craftsand artists is too long to name them all. Together with the music from the Farndon and District Brass Band and others they all added together to turn that damp start to the day into a bright exciting day out in Rossett. Our thanks go to our many helpers without whom the show would not happen but a special thank you to the Army Cadets who did such a good job setting up and helping with the car parking. The proceeds of the day will again go to local projects to benefit the community. Watch out you might see a Christmas Tree in Rossett this year.

Abbey Gate College is a well-established, coeducational school for pupils aged 4 to 18 on the outskirts of Chester. The college emphasises the importance of building self-esteem and a love of learning in a friendly and caring environment. We value each and every child; the potential in every pupil is nurtured and encouraged and the latest ISI inspection noted that, ‘Students achieve their academic and personal potential’. Aldford School is home to the popular and successful Junior and Infant Department of the College and through beautifully maintained, extensive grounds and a wide range of expertise on the staff, pupils have the opportunity to develop all areas of the curriculum inclusive of a thriving music, drama and sporting timetable. At the Senior School pupils and staff strive for academic excellence; GCSE and A level results are strong and remain consistently high. However, education is far greater than simply achieving super examination results; at Abbey Gate College the journey itself is of equal importance, providing a stimulating experience, widening opportunities and providing an education for life. Abbey Gate College is a successful and happy school, committed to maintaining traditional standards and

high educational ideals. Inspectors commended the high standards of teaching, learning and especially behaviour in the college. ‘The college fully meets its aim to encourage students to achieve their personal ambitions in an atmosphere that is caring but challenging. The students’ personal qualities are outstanding and fully supported within the college by the positive family type ambience. The community awareness is outstanding; relationships between staff and students themselves are outstanding and conducive to excellent behaviour’ (ISI). To fully understand what makes Abbey Gate College such a special place to be educated, please make an appointment to speak with pupils and staff and to view the stunning buildings and grounds.

The Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society (BRHS) held its 64rd annual horticultural show at the Rossett Village Festival on Saturday 24th August 2013 The show was a huge success with over 500 exhibits. The dahlia classes provided an excellent display. These are some of the magnificent blooms on display.

The winner of the Dahlia Trophy, John (Shep)Evans from Llangollen also won the prestigious Banksian Medal. This medal is awarded to the exhibitor with the most points in the flower and vegetable sections. The trophy for the heaviest pumpkin, which was over 30lbs went to Thomas Montgomery. Other trophies were awarded for flower, vegetables, craft, cookery and floral art. The junior section had a large number of entries including beautiful painted eggs, very professional looking photographs and some magnificent monsters, made out of fruit and vegetables. The trophies were presented to the winners by our President Mrs Pat Weir. The Society would like to thank all those who entered exhibits, bought raffle tickets, provided prizes and helped with the Show. Without them the show would not have been the success it was. We would also like to thank owners of local business’ who donated prizes for the raffle and took advertising space in the Show Schedule. We are now looking forward to next year when it will be the society’s 65 th Anniversary. With the continuing support of the Local Community we hope to make it bigger and better than ever.

Maes y Pant - Update and groups: plaques will be affixed to the benches in acknowledgement of the donations. One bench remains available for sponsorship. Anyone interested in sponsoring this final bench, please contact Sue Kelly on 01978 854469, quarrykelly@hotmail.co.uk

A belated Happy New Year from MyPAG and to those who visited Maes-y-Pant over Christmas and the New Year, we hope you enjoyed it. This must be one of the wettest winters on record, which is delaying the completion of the footpaths, so we hope you didn’t get too bogged down on the parts we haven’t finished. Lawtons, the contractors, are cracking on now, so fingers crossed for better weather, as we want to complete them by the end of February. We have lots of New Year resolutions about getting things done. During February, new fences will be installed at the Whiteway Drive entrance and inside the main entrance on Pant Lane (which will also have new gates). The existing security fence at Pant Lane will remain for the time being but we do intend to remove it before long. Waymarkers will be sited at various points around the site, and interpretation boards, which will feature pictures painted by local schoolchildren, will be installed. A panorama stone structure will be built at the viewing point, at the top of the footsteps. We plan to take the Quarryman sculpture away for safe keeping but he will be returned, near to the new entrance gate at Pant Lane, affixed to a specially designed plinth from Rossett based sculptor, Simon O’Rourke. We are also planning to install nine benches on the site over the next few weeks. Eight of these have been sponsored by local families

We are also looking for volunteers who can give up some of their time and get some exercise as well. We are setting up a small team of volunteers to do routine maintenance in the coming years. The tasks will include ensuring footpaths are clear and safe, checking trees for safety, cutting back undergrowth and monitoring wildlife habitats on site. One of the tasks planned is to re-open a former footpath from the Pant Lane entrance to the viewing point to complete a circular walk. There will be a Training Day on February 24, but further events will be organised, so if you are interested in volunteering, please contact Trevor Britton on 01978 855266, email trevor.britton@btinternet.com

A LESS TAXING LIFE IN THE SUN

According to latest figures, an estimated 350,000 people left the UK in 2011 in search of a fresh start abroad. The most popular European destinations include Spain, France and Germany (source: Home Office, Emigration from the UK Research Report 68, November 2012) For most people, tax havens evoke images of luxury yachts and champagne. But you do not have to be a formula one racing champion to benefit from tax mitigation nor do you have to move to exclusive locations such as Monaco or the British Virgin Islands. With some careful planning there could be significant savings to be made on income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax in countries that do not appear to be exotic offshore tax havens. Popular European destinations have their tax advantages too. Unfortunately tax is a bug bear most of us have to face - wherever we live - and it is paramount that if you are considering living overseas you should seek specialist tax advice otherwise it could end up costing you much more than you bargained for. The general rule of thumb is that you will pay UK income tax and capital gains tax as long as you are a UK resident. Although still to receive Royal Assent and thus subject to amendment, a new Statutory Residence Test (SRT) came into force from the start of the 2013/14 tax year which introduced a

number of key tests to assess an individual’s residence. It is no longer just the number of days spent in the UK that is considered when determining residency although it is still an important factor. If you meet any one of the criteria within the automatic residence test you will be deemed a UK resident. There are a number of criteria including spending 183 days or more in the UK per tax year or having a home in the UK for more than 90 days and living in that home on at least 30 days during that tax year. In addition there are automatic overseas tests and sufficient ties tests. The ties that are considered for these purposes are family, accommodation, work, the country in which you were present at midnight for the greatest number of days in a tax year and a 90 day tie which exists if you have spent more than 90 days in the UK in either or both of the previous 2 tax years. You may be eligible for the tax year to be split into 2 parts when coming to, or departing from, the UK. The chances are that wherever you lay your hat you will have to pay some tax. But just as in the UK specialists help millions of people pay less tax than they might otherwise, so too can experts who understand overseas tax and residency rules. The overriding message is simple: get expert advice. It could save you money.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. Juvenile Long-tailed Tits on feeder. Mandarin ducks (Gresford lake) © Hugh Linn

As usual August was marked by a reduction of birds in gardens. When young have fledged birds need to relax, recover condition and replace worn feathers. Moulting drains energy and many garden residents move out to the countryside where natural food is more readily available. Although Woodpigeons have been recorded nesting in every month of the year, by now most, having finished breeding, form feeding flocks and roam the countryside in search of food. The same technique is used by finches, crows and tits. In Rossett a loose flock of up to 50 Long-tailed Tits has been observed systematically working hedgerows in search of insects. In our garden during August Long-tailed Tits replaced absent Sparrows, Starlings, Chaffinches and Greenfinches as regulars at the feeders. Most of the Blackbirds had also moved out. This year Bumblebees have been plentiful. Tree Bumblebees occupied vacant nest boxes in two Burton gardens where at least 6 different species have been identified. Two Mandarin ducks are back on Gresford Lake. These are youngsters, possibly the offspring of the pair present in spring although, apart from a short spell at Llay Pool in June, we do not know

26

where they eventually settled . A male Mandarin in midsummer takes some beating as nature’s scruffiest duck. As the distinctive plumage is moulted they look mangy and moth-eaten. Juveniles, however, like the Gresford birds, in stark contrast, are positively dapper which means they can be confidently identified as this year‘s young. During July there were odd Red Kite sightings in the Trevalyn/Marford area. By the 1960s the British population was down to single figures confined to mid-Wales. Today as a result of protection and re-introductions there are around 2,000 pairs in the UK. About half are in Wales where they continue to expand their range so it may only be a matter of time before they settle locally Readers interested in birds are warmly invited to join kindred spirits at the Wrexham Birdwatchers. This group meets in Gresford Memorial Hall on the first Friday of the month at 7.30 pm. Further details may be obtained from the secretary, Marion Williams (Call 01978 854633).

essential gardening FLOWER GARDEN • Buy spring bulbs for next year. Most bulbs, including daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and small bulbs are best planted this month or in early October. Tulips are better planted towards the end of October • Give evergreen hedges a final trim to ensure they are neat for the winter • Now’s the time to go around your garden collecting seeds from perennials and annuals. Collect seed heads in paper bags and leave them in a warm place to dry for a few days, before cleaning and storing in small envelopes. Some gardens that open to the public offer see-collecting days – a great way to find something unusual. Most seeds are best sown in spring • Sweet pea lovers may find that sowing seed in autumn produces stronger plants. Do not soak the seeds as they are liable to rot. Use Seed and Potting Compost and sow the seeds in root trainers, sweet peas tubes, pots or trays. It has been found that dark coloured seeds germinate well in fairly damp compost, but pale seed require compost that is only just moist. • Cover the containers with glass or put them in a propagator and keep at around 15 C (59 F). When the seedlings appear transfer them to a cold frame. Pinch out the growing tips when the plants are about 10 cm (4 inches) high 30

ROSES • Shrub roses and ramblers can easily be propagated from stem cuttings at this time of year. Take a length of stem about 30cm (12 inches) long and trim it off just below the bottom leaf. Remove the soft tip just above a root joint. Take off all but the top two or three leaves and push the cuttings into a well dug trench in the garden to about half their length. They should be left for 12 months to root and develop • If rambler and climbing roses have got a bit out of hand, spend a bit of time tying them in LAWN • Aerate the lawn with a fork or special tool then apply Scotts Autumn Lawn Food to nourish your lawn through the winter months • You can continue to re-seed bare patches on your lawn. It’s also a good time of year to prepare the ground for sowing a new lawn, while the earth is still warm. FRUIT GARDEN • Cover autumn-fruiting blackberries and raspberries with netting to keep off the birds, but check daily to ensure no animals or birds get trapped • Pick early varieties of apples as soon as they’re ripe and eat them – they won’t keep.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk Darland Lane Flooding Update: The Developer of Pippin Lane has now agreed to reinstate the original drainage in accordance with the plans originally submitted. The work will be completed in time for this winter. This will save the Council a significant sum of money. Our engineers will now focus on resolving the issues associated with Gamford Lane and Broadoaks; again this work will be completed in time for this winter. Hopefully we will now have a permanent solution to this long-standing problem.

Finance. As part of the restructuring by the County Borough, one of the options is for the Council to no longer provide maintenance and support for play areas. Community Councils have been asked to accept responsibility for those within their area. I have suggested (and the Community Council agreed) that we negotiate with the County to take over Mountain View and Greenfields play areas. This will hopefully ensure they remain available to the community and also be maintained to the same standard as the park.

B5102. I continue to press for an early examination of the speed limit on the Llay Road which is currently scheduled for 2015. I have asked that it be brought forward in the priority listing. I am working jointly with Cllr Terry Boland from Llay to put pressure on the officers to re-visit the criteria used to prioritise speed reviews. In the meantime I am working with Highways to improve the junction with Croeshowell Lane. We are seeking to place additional warning signs and will also apply to Wrexham/Chester Rail link. The two priorities from the Community Council were litter in the park and anti-social behaviour around the Burton Underpass.

Wrexham pupils are celebrating success today with their GCSE and vocational examination results. 95% of pupils have achieved the Level 1 Threshold. This is in line with previous years’ high performance. More than three quarters (77%) of pupils in Wrexham schools achieved the Level 2 Threshold (at least 5 passes at A*-C), which is a significant increase on last year’s performance of 67%. Just over half of our students achieved the Level 2+ Threshold indicator which means at least 5 A*-C passes including English or Welsh (first language) and Maths. This is a significant increase on last year’s performance of 45%. In total, 1211 pupils sat a broad range of GCSE, vocational and skills qualifications. Councillor Michael Williams, Lead Member for Children’s Services and Education, said: “These are very pleasing results and I congratulate our pupils for their diligence and

hard work. I wish them well as they move to the next stage of their lives be it further education, training or employment. We will continue to support our schools as together we aspire to achieve educational excellence for young people in Wrexham.” John Davies, Wrexham’s Head of Life Long Learning said: “I warmly congratulate our young people on all their successes. With support from their teachers, parents and carers, they have worked very hard indeed to achieve this level of performance. I am very pleased to see the significant improvement in the number of grades achieved at A* - C, particularly in the very important subjects of English or Welsh and Mathematics. There have also been many outstanding achievements by students of all abilities and significant improvements made by some schools.“

Innovative new adult support centre opened in Wrexham An innovative new centre providing support and treatment for adults with issues in their lives including substance misuse and homelessness has been officially opened by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr I. David Bithell MBE. The Ty Croeso is a purpose built premises located on Grosvenor Road in Wrexham. The building is owned by the Wallich Homeless charity which provides supported accommodation for homeless individuals. Ty Croeso helps support individuals overcome their problems by providing a range of inter agency service at a central location. Clients can access services at the centre including breakfast clubs, drop-in services, advice and information and support groups work. Structured treatment from nurses and health professionals are also at the centre eliminating the need for clients to access different services at different sites. The project has been funded though the Welsh Government’s Substance Misuse Capital Grant, following a successful bid from Wrexham’s community Safety Partnership’s Substance Misuse Action Team. Geoff Lang. Acting Chief executive of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Chair of the Wrexham Substance Misuse Action Team said: "The Ty Croeso project is a clear example of statutory, voluntary sector and service users working effectively together to improve access to care. I am very pleased to see this

developmental work come to fruition, as it forms part of our local strategy to provide services that are responsive to the local needs of our community. “Ty Croeso will provide a range of substance misuse services under one roof and will have far reaching benefits. It is a clear priority for Wrexham’s Substance Misuse Action Team.” Antonia Watson, Chief Executive of The Wallich added: “The development is a prime example of collaborative working, both from the development phase and the day to day operations. Service users have welcomed the excellent facilities, and the integrated approach has really benefited those residents living in Wallich accommodation who access the on-site facilities.” Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships and Collaboration said: “This is an excellent example of how partners can work together to provide access to good quality care and advice for some of the most vulnerable people of society. “Ty Croeso is an excellent facility and the response from service users has been positive. The benefits of providing such services for adults with complex problems including substance misuse are far reaching not just for the individuals themselves, but for their family and the wider community.”

Has it been 12 months or longer since you last cleaned your carpets or upholstery? Carpets should be cleaned regularly even if they don’t look dirty. Like you use anti bacterial sprays on your kitchen work surfaces, carpets should be cleaned for the same reason. A clean carpet helps promote a healthy atmosphere free from dirt and bacteria, and more so for people with allergies and asthma.

Dear Essentiallyours, I’d like to comment that far from being a great photo on your front cover, I find that it is rubbing salt into a wound. You are actually condoning the wanton destruction wrought upon a much-loved local landmark by the undemocratic behaviour of the Environment Agency. What you appear to have missed is that in their eagerness to spend their European money, EA have completely destroyed the original salmon steps and replaced them with the carbuncle that you have prominently displayed.
