your life, your home, your community. Well July has been just glorious hasn’t it? We could get used to this, mind you it is long overdue. I can’t remember a few decent weeks of continuous sunshine for a good few years now, so I don’t want to hear anyone complaining it’s too hot! I can’t say I’m pleased that my air conditioning decided to pack up this month of all months, but I’m not complaining! It’s a shame the kids break up from school and we all jet off abroad for a week or two when it’s so nice at home. Let’s hope many of us are staying in this country for their holiday this year and investing money in our own economic climate, we certainly need it. Not only has it been a sunny month it’s also been a happy month, and I can’t not mention the arrival of the royal baby, George. I’ve just had to Google his title, as I wasn’t sure if he’d be a duke or a prince. Anyway Prince George of Cambridge it is and we’re all very pleased to welcome him into this world.

It comes round quick but it’s nearly time for the Rossett Village festival once again. So if you’re around over the August bank holiday weekend pop along and support the festival on the Saturday there’s something for everyone, kids and big kids alike. Rain or shine there’s both indoor and outdoor entertainment. A little bird tells me local radio station Dee 106 will be there this year with their mascot Chester the cat. I’m not sure how he’ll be received at the Dog show, but it will be interesting to see. Anyway I hope you all have a lovely relaxing month of August and look forward to seeing you soon.

All the best, Jill

North Wales Wildlife Trust 50th BIRTHDAY PARTY

The NWWT, a registered charity, is one of 47 Wildlife Trusts across the United Kingdom and one of 6 in Wales. It was set up on 14th September 1963 to protect the wildlife and improve habitats of North Wales and now manages 34 Nature Reserves which make up some of the most beautiful and important wildlife sites in North Wales. Our local branch, Wrexham and Dee Valley, looks after (amongst others) Marford Quarry - our local Nature Reserve. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of NWWT each branch will be holding a birthday party on Saturday 14th September at which a 50th birthday cake will be cut. Our event will take place at Marford Community Centre where Councillor Mike Edwards will open proceedings and cut the first slice at 2.00pm. Doors will be open from 1.30pm until 3.00pm and everybody is invited - there will be no entry charge! Afterwards there will be guided tours of the Marford Quarry reserve led by one of our volunteers. PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT US. All our Branches are managed by volunteers who arrange a variety of walks and events in the summer, followed by walks and interesting talks during the rest of the year.

We are always looking for more people to attend our events and you don't have to be a member to attend. Of course we would like you to support us by becoming members or by becoming volunteers. If you are interested please contact our Head Office at Bangor (01248 351541) or our North East office at Mold (01352 755472). Membership benefits include 3 copies of each of the following annually: • Natural World - the UK wide magazine of The Wildlife Trusts • Welsh Wildlife - the magazine of Wildlife Trusts Wales • Natur - NWWT's own magazine filled with news about our local wildlife In addition, we have Wildlife Watch for younger members whereby they annually receive four copies of Wildlife Watch magazine full of information, puzzles and projects, access to an interactive website with free wildlife themed games and downloads as well as information about local Watch clubs and their events designed especially for children. We look forward to seeing you on 14th September and remember: the wildlife of North Wales needs YOUR SUPPORT now more than ever.

West Highland Ramblings

A Diary of Douglas the Westie

What a month this has been, it started with the Ysceifiog Show, a two day event held in the hills above Holywell. I had been invited to make a guest appearance; in anticipation I had been to see my personal groomer, it turned out to be a waste of money. I arrived on the Saturday to pouring rain and a howling gale, as we celebrities say, the show must go; so I put on my smile and waved my paw and raised my leg. I was amazed to watch the sheep dog trials – how can any dog be so obedient to humans. So much for a wet weekend in Wales, at least I could dream of my Scottish trip. My annual visit to Scotland proved to be an epic, a certain corgi owner must have heard of my visit, She appeared to be following me around. On my first day I visited Abbotsford House, the home of Sir Walter Scott. The very next day HM arrived to declare it open, clearly unaware that the previous day I had christened it. The following day I went to Peebles and yes you can guess who else went to Peebles. I decided to climb the Eildon Hills, it was an attempt to escape the glare of publicity

8

that follows me around. I managed all 3 peaks, dragging Himself behind me, the view across the Borders was stunning and surprise surprise I was not followed on this occasion. As always happens on my holidays Himself heads off on yet another inspirational trip, this time I was dragged kicking and screaming back across the border into England to do the Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island trip. A little bit too touristy for my liking, however I did strike up a friendship with a Westie called Didi from Rotterdam. Quite a little looker she was, but don’t tell Kira I said that. Perhaps we can become dog pen pals. Fortunately we quickly returned to Scotland and back on the trail of my heritage. We visited Traquair House where Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night in Scotland, Floors Castle and Mellerstain House. It was at the latter that I got my own back on Himself and dragged him through the pet cemetery trying to find my ancestors. All in all an enjoyable trip with many happy memories and at least I managed to drag you know who away from Wales for a few days. Doug xx

Gresford has a vibrant and animated WI which currently has over forty members. Gresford WI meets on the first Wednesday of every month except August at 7p.m. in the Memorial Hall, Gresford. We have had a busy year at Gresford WI. Our speakers have been varied, with subjects including ‘Dragons, Leeks and Daffodils’, ‘The Servants of Erddig’ and ‘The History of Quilting’. Future subjects include ‘Ghosts of Chester’ and ‘Christmas Customs’. We have also made trips to Wrexham Little Theatre and Home Farm Overton where we had a wonderful afternoon making sausages and we have had another canal cruise, this time going through the Chirk tunnel. It was Gresford’s turn to host our group meeting in May. It was a wonderful evening where we entertained a group of 120 WI members. Our evening was entitled ‘Showtime’. A performance of songs from West End shows by the Llangollen Travelling Troupe was followed by a quiz to test everyone’s knowledge of popular musicals. The evening finished with a buffet provided by Gresford members. Our next meeting is on Wednesday September 4th and will be a talk by Lady Toastmaster Shawn Davies, entitled ‘Toastmistress Tales’. We have it on very good authority that Shawn is an excellent speaker with

many amusing and eye opening tales to tell! Our visit to Home Farm will be repeated; this time we will be learning the secret of bacon curing. If you would like to become a member or would just like to come along and see if Gresford WI is for you, you are welcome to attend any meeting. A warm WI welcome awaits you.

Members enjoy the ‘Showtime’ group meeting.

Great Spotted Woodpecker juvenile. Shelduck family Gresford Flash. © Hugh Linn

During the summer months Gresford Flash is not usually much of a magnet for birdwatchers but a family of Common Shelducks has lately been proving quite an attraction. Shelducks are often recorded on local waters. As breeders, however, they are basically marine ducks and likely to be found on the coast. As far as we know this is the first confirmed breeding record in the Wrexham area. It is likely that the featherlined nest was hidden down a nearby rabbit hole. Both adults and 7 ducklings were first seen in the reeds near the boathouse on 19 June and the following day the whole family, now with 13 babies, had taken to the water. By the end of June 9 little pied ducklings were still visible. Since then they all disappeared. Hopefully by now the parents will have escorted their brood to a secluded place of safety to grow and mature sufficiently to be capable of flight before joining up with other youngsters. The Flash is a favourite moulting site for Canada Geese and Greylags after the breeding season. The moulting flock currently contains a Barnacle Goose

16

of unknown origin. Perhaps the oddest bird nesting locally this summer was a feral Peahen found serenely sitting on eggs in a Burton garden. Readers report that Great Spotted Woodpeckers seem to have had a good breeding season and are increasingly regular garden visitors. Green Woodpeckers are less common in gardens but can be heard “yaffling” in trees around Llay Pool where fledgling Buzzards wail for food. Dozens of juvenile Pied Wagtails are attracted to insects on the surrounding mud and in recent weeks dragonflies and damselflies have been plentiful. Dragonflies are a favourite food for our most elegant falcon, the Hobby, which has been providing a spectacular display of aerobatics around the pool. Swallows’ alarm calls are often the first indication that Hobbies are about. On a recent visit within minutes of hearing the alarm I saw a Hobby with prey pursued unsuccessfully by the clearly unhappy resident female Sparrowhawk.

Here are a few pointers to get you started in the garden this month. Flower garden - Ensure containerised plants especially evergreens never go short of water during the summer while they’re developing their flower buds for next spring’s display. A shortage of water now can lead to a case of bud drop next year for plants, such as camellias and rhododendrons. Pots that have dried out should be submerged in water and left to soak for a few hours, ideally in a bowl, bath or water-butt. Even if it rains, pots often remain dry as they stand in the rain shadow of a house and their foliage acts as an umbrella. Support the stems of tall perennials and lilies with bamboo canes and watch out for lily beetles and their larvae. Pick any off and destroy them immediately. Deadhead roses as the blooms fade, cutting off the flowers just above the uppermost leaf on the stem. Trim back lavender bushes after flowering to remove the old blooms and shoot tips. Take care not to cut back too heavily into any old wood. Removing faded flowers from perennials and annual plants will also ensure a continued display of blooms. 18

Holiday watering - There are several things you can do to help prevent plants drying out. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid. You can also install an automatic trickle watering system on an outside tap, which is controlled by a timer and will turn water on and off each day. Continue taking summer cuttings of fuchsias, pelargoniums and tender perennials. These root quickly at this time of year, forming sturdy young plants that will successfully overwinter on a bedroom windowsill. Many houseplants, including coleus and African violets, can also be propagated from cuttings now. Trim hedges, especially hedging conifers that can become tall and annoy neighbours. Pests - Watch out for ants nesting in patio pots, where they can disturb root growth and reduce a plant’s performance. Standing pots in a large saucer of water helps deter them from settling in. Vine weevil is a particular problem in greenhouses and patio pots. Now is a good time to treat compost with biological pest control nematodes, which search out and kill weevil larvae. They can also be applied to the soil around attacked plants.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk Nags Head Lavister: A planning application has been submitted to Wrexham CBC to build 7 houses on land which comprises of the former bowling green at the rear of the Nags Head. I have a number concerns, firstly that once again developers are seeking to squeeze too many houses on a relatively small plot. Secondly the increase in traffic and Thirdly the overall impact continually building expensive houses has on a village community. In order to protect the character of the village we need more affordable homes. A number of people have raised concerns regarding the disruption caused to neighbours by such developments, unfortunately this is not a material planning concern and should be mitigated by conditions. PCSO - Reshaping Council Services. This is the work that is being carried out to save at least ÂŁ34m, with the latest news from the Welsh Government this is likely to increase to ÂŁ40m. The Council has agreed a programme of work that includes a Council wide Voluntary Early Retirement and Voluntary Redundancy Scheme. All contracts that are up for renewal are being closely scrutinised and other areas such as Streetscene will be market tested. A recent decision was taken to end discretionary school transport

services. Further examination of free school transport to Faith and Welsh Medium Schools is being examined. The level of cuts required are such that the Council is looking at all discretionary services that it provides. We are looking at ways of delivering services more efficiently and in different ways. This will involve the third sector and Community Councils taking on more responsibilities. Wrexham/Chester Rail link. The proposed work on relaying a dual track, due to start in October, suddenly is on hold. This is as a result of an intervention by Edwina Hart the Welsh Minister for Economy. I am concerned about this decision because it was part of a scheme to improve timings on the rail network and impacts on other mainline services. This could have a detrimental effect on business and commerce in North Wales. I have made the point that the Welsh Government can find the funding for an Airport and other transport links in South Wales and yet again North Wales is losing out. No Cold Calling Zones. At the time of writing I am awaiting the results of the residents survey in response to a request to establish a no cold calling zone in Harwoods Lane. In order to establish such a zone at least 67% of the houses in a road need to agree If any other areas feel that they would like to have such a scheme then please let me know, but before doing so, check with your neighbours. Please use my mobile 07769706999 or hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk.

A LESS TAXING LIFE IN THE SUN

According to latest figures, an estimated 350,000 people left the UK in 2011 in search of a fresh start abroad. The most popular European destinations include Spain, France and Germany (source: Home Office, Emigration from the UK Research Report 68, November 2012) For most people, tax havens evoke images of luxury yachts and champagne. But you do not have to be a formula one racing champion to benefit from tax mitigation nor do you have to move to exclusive locations such as Monaco or the British Virgin Islands. With some careful planning there could be significant savings to be made on income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax in countries that do not appear to be exotic offshore tax havens. Popular European destinations have their tax advantages too. Unfortunately tax is a bug bear most of us have to face - wherever we live - and it is paramount that if you are considering living overseas you should seek specialist tax advice otherwise it could end up costing you much more than you bargained for. The general rule of thumb is that you will pay UK income tax and capital gains tax as long as you are a UK resident. Although still to receive Royal Assent and thus subject to amendment, a new Statutory Residence Test (SRT) came into force from the start of the 2013/14 tax year which introduced a

number of key tests to assess an individual’s residence. It is no longer just the number of days spent in the UK that is considered when determining residency although it is still an important factor. If you meet any one of the criteria within the automatic residence test you will be deemed a UK resident. There are a number of criteria including spending 183 days or more in the UK per tax year or having a home in the UK for more than 90 days and living in that home on at least 30 days during that tax year. In addition there are automatic overseas tests and sufficient ties tests. The ties that are considered for these purposes are family, accommodation, work, the country in which you were present at midnight for the greatest number of days in a tax year and a 90 day tie which exists if you have spent more than 90 days in the UK in either or both of the previous 2 tax years. You may be eligible for the tax year to be split into 2 parts when coming to, or departing from, the UK. The chances are that wherever you lay your hat you will have to pay some tax. But just as in the UK specialists help millions of people pay less tax than they might otherwise, so too can experts who understand overseas tax and residency rules. The overriding message is simple: get expert advice. It could save you money.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. Twenty years of style and luxury On a flying visit to the Lion Quays Hotel Nr. Chirk recently, wife Pam stared in surprise at a car park full of pre-war Ford cars, and called me over to take a look. It proved to be a group of 1935 Ford Model Y and C cars belonging to members of the Ford Model Y & C Register who had been taking part in a tour of North and Mid Wales, arranged by their Spares Officer, Peter Ketchel of Chester, who has organised many such events in this area over the years. We introduced ourselves to the group of members at the bar, and thus followed a lively discussion with such people as Chairman Brian Godfrey, Secretary Bob Wilkinson and magazine editor Sam Roberts, all of whom were bursting with knowledge and full of enthusiasm for their very special Fords. Sam, who had spent 32 years in the army, has also written a book entitled ‘Henry’s Cars for Europe’ which is available via their website- www.fordyandcmodelregister.co.uk or from eBay no. 160981315383. There were several C type 10 h.p. models on display, as well as the Y types, including some with special bodies, but the model that had caused a sensation when it went on sale in 1935 was the Y Popular two-door saloon, which Ford had cleverly reduced the price of by £2, to make it the first £100, four seater saloon car! Morris 32

had built their own £100 car in 1932 but that was only a two-seater, and although the Austin Ruby of the times was a four-seater, it cost £118. So, the two-door Y Popular was an instant sales success. It had a four cylinder 933c.c. side-valve engine which developed 23.4 b.h.p. and was rated at 7.96 h.p. ,with a £6 Road Tax. The top speed was 59 M.P.H. and the touring fuel consumption was 35-45 m.p.g. It had a three-speed gearbox with synchromesh on 2nd. and 3rd.; 6 volt electrics and, disappointingly, suction operated windscreen wipers, which when you accelerated in the rain, slowed them down just when you needed them most. “Mine work perfectly downhill!” joked Sam. I told him about Ray Lambert-Evans, a good friend of mine who had once owned a rather clapped out Ford Y, which was a very temperamental starter. He always carried a little bottle of petrol around with him, which, as a last resort, he poured directly into the Zenith carburettor, before a final turn of the starting handle. If that didn’t work, he sometimes flayed the tyre on the front wheel with it in anger! “Just like Basil Fawlty!” laughed Sam. So we reluctantly left this group of Ys men after such a pleasurable evening- but I hope we meet them again next year!

Wrexham’s Libraries are Buzzing! Gwersyllt Library has been transformed into a wildlife friendly zone. With the help of funding and contributions from external organisations the green-fingered 1st Gwersyllt Scout Group,Wrexham libraries staff and North Wales Libraries Partnership (NWLP) staff, created a wildflower bed and caterpillar café to provide nectar, food and shelter for pollinators and other wildlife all year round. Pollinators provide an estimated £430 million per year to the UK economy. To help conserve the declining numbers of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects and their habitats, Gwersyllt library is 1 of 8 north Wales libraries transforming their grounds into wildlife friendly zones. Claudia Howard, Partnership Support Officer for the NWLP said, “The project may seem unusual for libraries to undertake. However, creating habitat for pollinators is but one of many aims. Libraries must attract audiences, work with communities, work collaboratively and meet sustainability and environmental objectives. Working with schools, scouts, beavers, and the Youth and Justice Service, allow us to not only to raise awareness of bees and butterflies, but also libraries.” One of the first libraries to complete the project was at Gwersyllt where Claudia said: “Overall the project has been well received and people were keen to work with the NWLP. The 1st Gwersyllt Scouts were great

fun to work with. They were inquisitive, bright youngsters who were evidently eager to join in. It was a pleasure to meet them all. Thank you to scout leaders Claire Fanson, Olwen Ruscoe and David Morris and the parents for allowing them to participate.” Claire Fanson said, “It’s great to see the scouts involved in a project directly in their community. The Scouts meet in Gwersyllt and they can watch the meadows develop.” David Morris added, “The Scouts have learned about gardening, why materials are used, how to care for the environment and the project has also helped them to develop working as a team.” In addition to gardening tasks, the children perused the butterfly and moth exhibition on loan from Bangor University Brambell Museum and Snowdonia National Park and handled the reptiles, amphibians and unusual pets from Reptile Kids. Sandra Gardner, Manager at the Gwersyllt Community Resource Centre where the project was carried out said: “This was a fantastic day of fun activities and it was great to see the Scouts taking part in improving our local environment. The grounds of the centre have been improved by their efforts. We’re so grateful to Claudia Howard for organising the planting for pollinators”. The libraries which are participating in the project are Gwersyllt, Rhos, Chirk, Brynteg, Dolgellau, Bethesda, Penrhyn Bay and Penmaenmawr.

Sowing The Seed

Cornflowers and poppies are just some of the seeds we have been sowing as part of our ongoing campaign to encourage people to give up a little space in their gardens and allotments to wildflowers. You may have seen us at the Overton Village Fete or the Cheshire County Show where we were handing out free packets of wildflower seed and our ‘demo-meadow’ was on display showcasing just what Wildbanks Conservation can do! The mobile meadow has a bird-feeding station built into it which was hand crafted from Elm, Beech and Ash which Mick had felled and planked himself. We have been taking our campaign to school where the children at Borderbrook Primary have been planting wildflowers to help us show them the importance of native plants and insect pollinators.

to make insect homes with twigs and moss. The children also enjoyed pond dipping and bird box making as part of the Environmental workshops we tailor-made for the school. Projects such as these can often be funded by Lottery grants, so if you are a school or a community group, Wildbanks Conservation can help secure funding on your behalf. We do not always charge for this service so please contact us to see if we can help you! Our work at schools elsewhere has paid off too, as a living willow dome we created with the children in the spring has now leapt into life. Alongside the woven dome, the raised beds we built are now flourishing with masses of runner beans thanks to the greenfingered nursery children and a Lottery grant we secured to fund the project.

Be safe not sorry in the sun Wales’ top doctor is warning sun-seekers to stay safe as the warm weather looks set to continue. Welsh A&E departments have seen an increase in patients suffering from heat exhaustion, sun burn – and minor injuries relating to alcohol intoxication. Chief Medical Officer Dr Ruth Hussey said: “During warm days and mild evenings it is very tempting to sit outside and soak up the sun. “However, it is important to keep in mind the risks of too much exposure to the sun and heat, and to take precautions against them. “I cannot stress how important it is to drink plenty of water or other soft cold drinks, rather than alcohol which can dehydrate you further. “Wear sun screen, loose-fitting clothes and a hat. “Patients who have respiratory and cardiac conditions struggle with humidity. I urge older people, especially those with heart or lung diseases to be careful. In hot weather the air quality can deteriorate. Humid weather and poor air quality are also all known asthma triggers, so people who have asthma should consider taking any preventative measures suggested by their doctor. "Avoid staying in the sun too long, especially between 11 am and 3 pm when it is at its strongest. “It is very important to protect babies and small children. Babies burn quickly so need to be shaded from the sun, kept cool and given plenty of cool liquids. Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 that has four or five stars

and protects against UVA and UVB. “Maximise the protection by putting sunscreen on your children about half an hour before they go outside, and re-apply at least every two hours, more often if they are playing in water. A wide-brimmed hat that covers their face, back of the neck and ears will help protect children when they play outside. “People with fair skin, lots of moles or freckles and those with a family history of skin cancer will also need to be very careful when out in the sun.” With the increased pressures on A&E during the warm weather, it is important that the public play their part in assisting the emergency care services by considering whether they could be treated with support from NHS Direct Wales, a pharmacist or through primary care services

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD

Working together An enjoyable bit about being a local councillor is getting involved in projects on a practical basis. One recent example, on what I will describe as “Murray morning”, was where we warmed up for an afternoon of watch a first British male Wimbledon champion in short trousers by working in Maes-Y-Pant. On a very warm day we helped level the ground where our planned tool store will go and then backfilled the steps up to the viewpoint, which had become depressed by the footfall. Well done to all those who helped, we earned our leisurely afternoon. If you want to get involved keep an eye on the notice board at the Pant Lane entrance. Working Together 2 There is a further chance to get involved in helping the village in the annual “lake clear up days” where we all don our wellies and spruce up the area around Gresford Lake on the High Street. I am given to believe this is on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September, starting around 10am. If you want to confirm this and get involved give Marion Williams a ring on 01978 854633.

Young People’s summer activity

The Gresford Trust reaches sixty five next year but we are far from retiring. In fact we plan to celebrate and also to mark in a suitable way the centenary of the start of the Great War of 1914-1918. All the trustees have done at the moment is to pencil in a date, which is Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014. We want to make it as inclusive for residents and village organisations alike and are keen to listen to your ideas. To suggest ideas, or better still be part of the steering group contact the trust on 01978 856650 or via contact@gresfordtrust.org

Gresford Community Council has commissioned Wrexham youth services to put on some activities for young people of 8+ in the last two weeks of the long holidays. Sessions will run between 12.30 and 3.30pm between August 19th and August 30th inclusive. There is no session on Bank Holiday Monday but an extra morning session is planned for the following Tuesday morning.

Sunday 6th October 2013 Last year’s MBNA Chester Marathon was enjoyed by runners and spectators alike, whilst also raising an estimated half a million pounds for local and national charities. This year’s course is unchanged from last year, incorporating iconic local landmarks along the route as it passes through both England and Wales. The route has been agreed with Highways Authorities and Police. To ensure the safety of runners, spectators and members of the public, the race will take place on closed roads. During these road closure times, diversions will be in place. Roads will only be closed for the minimum period necessary to ensure safety. In Lavister and Rossett road closures affect Chester Road, Darland Lane, Gamford Lane and Rossett Road between 9:00 and 13:30. Runners have completed a third of their race as they run through Lavister & Rossett, and they will appreciate some encouragement – so why not go out to spectate and cheer. Keep your eyes open for the local residents taking part in this international field. If you don’t fancy running yourself, you can still be part of this great experience

by helping the growing number of volunteers from Lavister and Rossett. Email volunteers@chestermarathon.co.uk to find out more. Good times! MBNA Chester Marathon team

Has it been 12 months or longer since you last cleaned your carpets or upholstery? Carpets should be cleaned regularly even if they don’t look dirty. Like you use anti bacterial sprays on your kitchen work surfaces, carpets should be cleaned for the same reason. A clean carpet helps promote a healthy atmosphere free from dirt and bacteria, and more so for people with allergies and asthma.

THE ALPHA COURSE IS COMING TO GRESFORD Ever wanted to explore the meaning of life or ask challenging questions about the Christian faith. Maybe you're just curious about this church stuff and want to have a nosy? Alpha doesn't care about your background, it welcomes all those questions and it's free. Socrates famously said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." Sometimes it's easier not to ask questions but on the Alpha course, we think life is worth exploring. The course is fun, relaxed and totally non-pressured (that's probably why over 18 million people around the world have already done it!!) Come and join us at: Gresford Methodist Church, Chester Road, Gresford. Starts 9th September at 6.30 pm with a meal and finishes at approximately 9.00 pm. For more information Tel Patrick Rudden on 01978 356818 or email: patrickrudden@aol.com Looking forward to meeting you.

covershot Did you see the front cover? Isn’t it just great? You may recall that we have been running a little competition for a few months. All we wanted you to do was get out and about in your local area with your camera. Spot something lovely and shoot away. We had an amazing response to our competition this year. The standard was very high. It’s been great to see such images falling into our inbox. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted an entry. The final decision was a tough one, but for us it showed not only technical ability, but a real love for the local area. The winning image was taken by Harvey Smith of Rossett. Congratulations. It’s at the top of this page, have another look, it’s great. On the right, you’ll also see a selection of the other entries we received - all great. The competion will run again next year, so have your camera ready when you’re out and about. There’s no ‘prize’ as such - but the winning image will grace the cover Essentallyours and over 4000 people will see it! 50

Hello Jill,

We feel we have to add our voice to the letter in support of The Alyn Surgery in the July issue of essentially yours. We too are appalled that you published in June one person’s disgruntled, inaccurate diatribe against the practice. There is much less chance of catching germs in the comfortable and welcoming arrangement of chairs in the Rossett surgery than in the serried ranks of seats in the clinical atmosphere of a “modernised” practice. Having experienced both, we know which we prefer and hope the complainant has now taken their own germs elsewhere. Patients can go to the Alyn surgery confident of receiving help, without the trepidation associated with a newer, clinical, environment, which appears more like going straight into hospital. New ways are not always the best Name & address supplied

I wondered if it would be possible for you to print in your magazine about the successful outcome of my lost Barn Owl. Bobbie - Breeze is familiar to many of the children and adults in Rossett, and they will have seen my notices around the village after she went missing on Tuesday16th July. I was very fortunate to find her in a tree at Marford Farm on the sixth day after she escaped from my garden. I am very, very grateful to Pam who lives on Marford Hill for contacting me after she had seen her in some land next to her garden. I would also like to thank everyone who put up notices in shops etc. and also to thank the children by the river and everyone who whilst out walking kept ‘eyes up’ in the hope of finding her. As Pam declined the reward offered a donation was made to a charity and also to the Owl Sanctuary. Jenny Creed

On Saturday 20th July I had the delightful pleasure of visiting "The Machine House" in Rossett with a group of friends. I would like to start off by saying how impressive the customer service was, nothing was too much trouble, but also how charismatic the restaurant was very inviting and relaxing. The quality of food was exceptional and I would have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful establishment to anyone. I am a firm believer that we should all support our local businesses and where ever possible keep our hard earned cash within the community. "The Machine House" is a credit to the owners and we are lucky to have it in our village. Nicole, Mountain View
