your life, your home, your community. Have we all got Olympic fever now, after that fantastic opening ceremony? I thought it was a mixture of a thoughtful, fun and educational event, which suited all ages and cultures. I was expecting more pure entertainment, so was pleasantly surprised to see our history celebrated across the years. I learned a few things from it too, as it unfolded over the evening. I was shocked that someone described it as ‘lefty, political rubbish’ or words to that effect. But yes, I’ve definitely caught the Olympic bug and have been watching as much as I can. In particular, I really got into the women’s cycling on Sunday and am astounded at how young all the athletes are. To my knowledge we have no locals competing, but please let me know if I am mistaken about this as it would be great to hear about them. Mind you, we did have an overseas Olympic team staying and training locally, mentioned on Friday night as the teams came out during the opening ceremony, which was great to hear. And whilst we’re talking about exceptional people, let’s not forget the unsung local heroes that do a lot of work in the community with little recognition, to whom we would also love to give gold medals. Well done to those involved with the Worthenbury Blues and Roots festival. It was a major achievement to have gone ahead with the event at all, after the 5 consecutive wet months we’ve had. They still managed to have a great day!

Let’s hope we get a dry day for the Rossett Village Festival over the bank holiday weekend. The weather makes or breaks events like this, but even if it’s not the greatest of days please still go and support your village festival. There’s always lots of indoor things to do and see there. This wet weather certainly has a lot to answer for! Thanks to the local resident who reminded me about the difficulties which the farming industry has experienced this year with its crops. A lot of rain and little sun have affected farming produce, such as the veggies we take for granted. Financially, this area of farming has suffered a great deal this year. Being a rural area we have local farms that will have been affected. Other areas such as garden centres have been affected too. The weather has hardly inspired us to go mad outdoors this year, has it? Traditionally, we have more DIY work done in the spring and summer as we wait for warmer, dryer weather in order to cope with the inconvenience of big jobs we need to get done, such as painting, building work etc, and I guess that’s taken a hit too. We are already living in a difficult economic climate and this weather has been a further kick in the teeth for some industries. Mind you, on the opposite side of the coin there are some industries which have benefitted too. I suppose that’s life!
All the best, Jill

Sunday 7th October 2012 Last year’s MBNA Chester Marathon was enjoyed by runners and spectators alike, whilst also raising an estimated half a million pounds for local and national charities. This year’s course is unchanged from last year, incorporating iconic local landmarks along the route as it passes through both England and Wales. The route has been agreed with Highways Authorities and Police. To ensure the safety of runners, spectators and members of the public, the race will take place on closed roads. During these road closure times, diversions will be in place. Roads will only be closed for the minimum period necessary to ensure safety. In Lavister and Rossett road closures affect Chester Road, Darland Lane, Gamford Lane and Rossett Road between 9:00 and 13:30. Runners have completed a third of their race as they run through Lavister & Rossett, and they will appreciate some encouragement – so why not go out to spectate and cheer. Keep your eyes open for the local residents taking part in this international field. If you don’t fancy running yourself, you can still be part of this great experience by
helping the growing number of volunteers from Lavister and Rossett. Email Linda or Elaine on volunteers@chestermarathon. co.uk to find out more. Good times! MBNA Chester Marathon team

West Highland Ramblings
A Diary of Douglas the Westie
Last month I announced my intention to visit Bath, mainly to see my Yorkie friend Digby. Immediately that I set foot in the city centre I was recognised: a German tourist stopped me and asked if I would pose for a photograph and also give my autograph. This fame thing is becoming a bit of a bind. Last month it was being allegedly pictured in Monte Carlo and this month in Bath. To be quite honest I am having real problems with Himself; he is becoming insanely jealous. He recently found out that if you put ‘West Highland Ramblings – Rossett’ into Google it produces far more hits than he himself could ever hope for. Then on top of this, Robbie has taken to genuflecting every time I pass him. Furthermore, a famous artist is negotiating with me to sit for him; he wishes to make a caricature of me. Well, that is OK just so long as it is not a cartoon; there is a standard below which a Scottish gentleman of refinement cannot go. Oh yes, back to my holiday. I was taken on a 22 mile-long steam railway ride, only to find, yet again, that I was being treated like royalty. I was shown into a carriage that 8
had a beautiful brass plaque stating that it had been brought to the West Somerset Railway directly from the West Highland line. What else did I do? Oh yes, we went to Wells. Humans never fail to surprise me - going to Wells when it has been raining solidly for five days! Ah well, that is the last of my trips for a while. I heard Himself muttering something about kennels. Well, if he thinks that he is sending me to anywhere other than a 5 star establishment, he can think again. Have I told you that the aforementioned Robbie is now using Skype to communicate with his family? When I asked Striker if he had tried Skype he said he preferred to stick to Pedigree Chum; clearly he is not into modern communications. Those of you who watched the opening of the Olympics will have noticed that, rather surprisingly, I did not make an appearance. The reality is that I was invited to parachute out of a certain helicopter. I had agreed, but when I found out that I was to be merely an understudy to a certain Welsh breed of dog, I withdrew and chewed up my equity card. Have fun, Douglas xx

Gresford Craft Group was founded in 1980 and put on its first display of work at a coffee morning held in Church House on the 25th June 1981. The display became an annual event in the village calendar and in 1988 the group first displayed in All Saints Church at the invitation of the recently-arrived new Vicar (now Canon), David Griffiths. The first show was very successful, attracting craftlovers from miles around and the vicar prevailed on the members of the group to make it an annual event. Wrexham Quilting Circle is younger and began soon after the opening of the new Memorial Hall in 1988. This group (many members belong to both groups) has ever since also mounted an exhibition in the Memorial Hall at the same time that the Craft Group has their own in the church. The village really comes alive and has a special buzz during the four June days when the exhibitions are on. The activity centres around the Hall, the Church and Church House where members of the groups serve morning coffees, lunches and afternoon teas to appreciative visitors. The Plant Stall and Tombola are also to be found in Church House. Sales Stalls have moved recently to the Blue Room in the Memorial Hall, with 10
the quilting exhibition filling the adjacent Green Room. Visitors come from far and wide thanks to the renown of the members’ skills, built up over the past twenty-five years. We also invite other groups to join us to widen the appeal of the event, especially to non-stitchers. This year, space was given to Clwyd Spinners and Weavers, Wrexham and District Photographic Society and the Cheshire Borders Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild. The Art Group, a spin-off of the Craft Group, also exhibits annually, as does the group known as the Cestrian Quilters. The Vicar was recently in South Wales. He was asked where he lived and when he replied, he was astonished when his questioner told him she often visited to attend the summer exhibitions! This year, we have raised £6,000 and have given £1,200 each to the church, the hall and to Nightingale Hospice. We have also donated £600 each to Dynamic, CHICS, Dogs for the Disabled and RNIB Cymru. Our shows next year will run from Tuesday 18th – Friday 21st June. We look forward to welcoming you then. Val Shields. Chairman.

Education, Education, Education Funding school fees or perhaps university fees is one of the biggest financial commitments a family can make. Parents and Grandparents continue to recognise the value that independent education can offer – but it isn’t getting any cheaper. According to a recent survey the cost of sending a child to private school in England or Wales is rising annually by around 4% (source: Independent schools council January 2012) Generally, families looking to fund school fees fall into three categories – those who want to invest a lump sum, those who would like to spread the cost of fees or parents wanting to set up a regular savings scheme to provide funds to cover future fees. There are several schemes available to help make school fees more affordable and an experienced wealth manager can draw up a bespoke investment plan that can be both tax efficient and flexible. For example, you could consider using your annual tax-free ISA allowance. By investing the maximum amount permitted in an ISA* and selecting funds run by full-time professional investment managers, a tidy sum could be accumulated in the space of ten years. For grandparents, trust planning can be a useful tool if they wish to make provision for school fees and achieve Inheritance
Tax (IHT) benefits at the same time. If they make regular payments from their income without reducing their lifestyle, then these gifts are not counted as part of their estate for inheritance tax purposes. Another option is to give a lump sum for their grandchildren’s education and provided they survive for a further seven years, the gift is free of IHT. Grandparents might also want to consider other solutions, such as life assurance, to increase significantly the funds created for grandchildren. This can be very useful when there is more than one child you wish to provide for. With interest rates still at an all time low, and the country only slowly coming out of recession, it is important to make your investments work as hard for you as possible. The history of financial markets has shown consistently that a measured, long term view is always the best approach to investing. Today, it is more important than ever to be fully aware of all the solutions available so that you can make an informed choice for your personal wealth management. Please contact us if you would like more information on this topic. Early planning makes a lot of sense. *The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Wrexham's new industrial estate access road was officially opened today by Carl Sargeant, AM, Minister with responsibility for Transport. During the opening ceremony the Minister cut a banner over one of the newly constructed bridges on the road and unveiled a plaque that will be set in slate at the Northern Access of the road. The road was then opened to a cavalcade of over 60 vehicles associated with the Industrial Estate who made their way over the bridge and into the Estate. The £30.3 million road provides new and improved north and south access to the Estate, one of the largest in Europe, and has been entirely funded by the Welsh Government. Wrexham Council appointed Birse Civils to undertake the construction work and their successful partnership has seen the road finished on time and on budget. The Minister said: “This is a project that exemplifies the Welsh Government working closely with the local authority to deliver local priorities on time and within budget.” “With improved links the Industrial Estate will provide a welcome boost to the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents near the industrial estate by taking heavy traffic away from their homes.” “This new access road reflects our commitment to further improving the transport infrastructure across Wales and will play a key part in improving
14
the competitiveness of businesses located on the Estate.” Cllr Ian Roberts, Mayor of Wrexham, said: "This is a historic day for Wrexham Industrial Estate, its businesses and workers, who have all waited so patiently for this opening. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Welsh Government for their commitment to the area in ensuring the money was made available for this essential link to the Estate." Paul Bird, Commercial Director, Birse Civils North said: “We are delighted to deliver this project ahead of schedule. The team worked tirelessly to deliver the project with minimal disruption to the local community and the roads they leave behind will no doubt be of great benefit to Wrexham and the wider community.” The road brings with it fantastic new opportunities for investment in Wrexham which has easy road access to the North West and is within a two hour drive of one third of the Uk's population and half of its manufacturing industry. The need for this vital link was identified as far back as the 1970's and funding became available from the Welsh Government in the 1990's. Since that time extensive consultation, preparation and a public enquiry have been undertaken to bring the road to its opening today.

The soggy summer weather dumped on Britain by the jet stream left more northerly parts short of water with the consequence that many wetland breeding birds, having failed to rear young, embarked on their southward migration much earlier than usual. By mid-July Welsh wetlands were providing refuge for flocks of wading birds such as Blacktailed Godwits from Iceland, still in their brickred breeding plumage. The RSPB reserves at Burton-on-Wirral and Conwy have recorded Dunlins, Knots and Spotted Redshanks, all in their summer finery. Locally, while we have yet to turn up something exotic, the distinctive calls of Curlews on passage have been heard from birds stopping off to rest and feed in damp fields en route for their wintering grounds. Meanwhile many of our resident breeders are still feeding voracious fledglings. Blue Tits seem to have had a productive summer judging by the number of youngsters coming to garden feeders. Juvenile Blue Tits can be readily distinguished from adults because they are much more yellow in colour and also, in comparison with their scruffy moulting parents, positively immaculate. Other species whose young can be identified by brighter yellow feathers are Willow Warblers. Young Robins, unlike Blue Tits, are drab to look at, being streaky brown and spotty and lacking 16
colourful red breasts. This inconspicuous plumage makes for good camouflage and prevents them from being regarded as potential rivals by territorially aggressive adults. Some young Blackbirds can be confusing. Those with strongly spotted breasts can be easily misidentified either as Song Thrushes or even possible hybrids. Blackbirds and thrushes are closely related members of the same family. Cross-breeds have occurred in captivity but in the wild hybrids are very unlikely. Our garden Blackbirds, like House Sparrows and Robins, are very partial to mealworms and one individual has been observed cramming 23 in its beak. In fairness it must be admitted it was feeding young at the time.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk Station Road I have been asked by a number of people why the Council has left the lay-by at the top of Station Road when the rest of the work was done. The reason is that this is unadopted highway and the Council could not have resurfaced it. To do so would have created a precedent that would have had repercussions across the County Borough. There are a number of complex legal issues and if you wish to know more please email me as it would take up the whole of this column to respond! Travellers. The travellers have failed to comply with the first stage of the High Court order to vacate the site and remove all caravans by July 18th. The Judge attached a Penal Notice to the order. This means that failure to comply with any part of the order renders them liable for imprisonment. The Council have now applied to the Court to have the Penal Notice activated. Grass Verges
The Chief Executive has agreed to my request for an enquiry into the planning and implementation of the grass cutting contract this year, together with details of the terms of reference given to the contractors. In my view the Council have failed to provide a proper service and the initial work completed by the contractors is of a poor standard. Lessons clearly have to be learned to
ensure that there is no repetition of this performance. North Wales Police I am concerned that the changes to the design of the North Wales Police website, which removes the links between PCSO’s & CBM’s and Wards is a retrograde step. There is no longer a direct contact number to the local PCSO; calls are routed via the 101 service. It is important that there is a clear link between local police and the community they serve. It is also clear that the 101 service is not fit for purpose; my own experience, together with a number of complaints received, indicates serious shortcomings. I will be raising this at a regional level at the new North Wales Safer Communities Board, on which I now sit. Railway Crossing Station Road The much awaited new gates have been fitted to the crossing. This now means that all users, including people in wheel chairs and on mobility scooters, can now cross safely. Full marks to Community Councillor Gerallt Smith for persistence! Chester Road I am continuing to press for the resurfacing of Chester Road to be completed during the school holidays. Unfortunately, the work programme has been seriously delayed due to the bad weather. Hopefully it will be started soon.
As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk.

Investing in Normally we associate Hadlow Edwards with helping others with their wealth management, but more recently they have been investing in themselves for a change. They've been a Wrexham business for many years and have their office across from the Royal Mail sorting office on Regent Street in Wrexham. Over the 10 years they have been established they have grown considerably in size, so when the opportunity to buy the premises next door became available, they took it. In the early days when they started there was just the 2 of them, Warren Hadlow and Medwyn Edwards, both local guys from Holt and Wrexham. Now there are 15 of them working as a team offering wealth management advice covering a wide range of investments, pensions and insurance. They need the new space to house the team and to deal with all of the enquiries they get privately and professionally, and to deliver their specialist advice. If you need advice about money they are confident they can help. They had their official launch of their new office last week and quite rightly too had an open day and invited local businesses and clients to come 22
growth and see their new look. Part of the national St. James’s Place Group David Bellamy their Chief Executive came to say a few words to mark the occasion, and to visit one of the top performing Practices. He looked pleased to be able to do so. As smart as the new offices are with a lovely reception area to greet you, Warren, Medwyn and the team are still happy to come and see you at your home or office. We congratulate them on their success and would like to say how much they deserve it, and we have no doubt that the future will just be as successful for them.

The 8th Worthenbury Blues & Roots Festival – 30th June Following weeks of uncertain weather a decision was made to hold this year’s Worthenbury Blues & Roots Festival in a large marquee and it proved to be an excellent decision. Whilst overall numbers were down compared to previous years (probably due to the weather), those who attended were dry and comfortable and enjoyed eight acts from all over the blues genre, whilst also enjoying the excellent food and real ale that was served up by the village hall committee.
26
The musicians present were quite varied, from the larger-than-life acoustic duo Tom Attah and Frannie Eubanks to the outstanding mellow electric guitar of Steve Roux, from the Brass Knuckle Blues Band. Then there was the raw, humorous wit of Aussie Rory Ellis to the retro rocking rhythm and blues of headliners Big Boy Bloater and The Limits. Whatever the style, each act was warmly applauded and the general feedback was very positive. Indeed, one reviewer from the British Blues Press remarked that Worthenbury is now firmly established as the best UK one-day blues festival. With the proceeds earmarked for improvements to the village hall, the hard work and planning was worth the effort. A big "thank you" goes to all our sponsors and helpers and particularly to Essentially Yours magazine for their valuable help in promoting the event. Pete Evans Images © Ian Williams Photography

Michael’s Marathon Challenge for Local Cancer Charity, CHICS
Fifteen year old Michael, who lives in Rossett and attends Darland School, has set himself a marathon challenge during his summer holidays to help raise funds for CHICS. CHICS provide information and support for children and their families affected by cancer in the North Wales, Cheshire and Liverpool area. Michael will be retracing the 192 mile long distance Coast to Coast walk created by the late Alfred Wainwright, which starts from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Yorkshire coast. The 192 mile challenge passes through the picturesque scenery of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors National Parks. It involves climbing and descending 24,000 feet (more than twice the height climbed when ascending from Everest base camp to Everest summit!). It will take Michael 14 days to complete and he will be walking up to 24 miles in a single day. Michael has been training for this challenge for a several years, giving up at least one weekend a month walking in the lakes with his dad and climbing most of the 214 Wainwright fells in the process. If you would like to sponsor Michael and help him to raise £1,500 for CHICS, please visit his My Donate website to make an online donation. Please visit the website below https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ michaelscoasttocoast All sponsors and donations would be very much appreciated in helping him to reach his target of £1,500. Thank You.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
We endeavour for all events to be in date when you receive your magazine. However, sometimes events will be imminent or have been and gone and this is because we haven’t been given enough notice to publicise the event, or have control over how soon you read the magazine, and of course some of you get the magazines before others due to volume of delivery. We still publish them for those people that read the magazine straight away and do so in the hope that a few people will be able to support the event and attend at short notice.

Dear Residents, Over the last few months, North Wales Police have been actively recruiting new Police Community Support Officers. This is good news for all, especially for residents in the ward of Gresford East and West as your new PCSO for this area is now on independent patrol, meeting local residents/ businesses and community groups. His name is PCSO Daniel George. Please can I remind all residents and businesses about the need to be extra vigilant with security, especially in the current climate of warm weather we are having. This can be an ideal time for opportunists to strike! If windows or doors are left open and items are on display, these can easily be a target for criminals so please keep this in mind when you are in the back garden and your front doors or windows are left open. On Wednesday 8th August at 6.30pm, I have arranged an environmental litter pick at the Gresford Skate Park and surrounding areas. The aim is to encourage local youths to become involved with this activity in order to raise awareness of issues relating to litter and the setting of fires. Through working in partnership with ‘Keep Wales Tidy’, Gresford and Marford youth detached workers and North Wales Fire Service, we will all be at 36
the location collecting litter and speaking to youths. We will be explaining about the dangers and consequences relating to the of dropping litter and the setting of fires. So, if you are free and would like to come along and join us, we would be pleased to see you. Please look out for our update in next months edition; I will hopefully have some photographs and news on the new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme which has been set up on Springfield Lane, Marford. Enjoy the sunshine! Kelly, Dan and I look forward to speaking with you all whilst out on our patrols.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Schools out for summer! Firstly, good luck to all Darland’s 2012 year 11 cohort for results day on the 23rd. The future looks good at Darland for 2012-13. The September intake will be the highest it has been for a number of years and I know that Wrexham Council are very pleased that the projected budget position for next March is on the positive side. Also, the staffing choices that governors have had to make in the past term are in sharp contrast to those we made only a few years ago. Many thanks to those staff who are moving on and a welcome to new staff joining in September, some in vital curriculum areas. There is a proven connection between school attendance and academic results and the school’s performance in this respect has consistently been above the average in both Wrexham and Wales but still continues to improve incrementally. Incidentally, the Education Scrutiny committee which I chair for Wrexham Council is looking at unauthorised absences from school; I would welcome your views on how these can be reduced. Are there particular dilemmas that families face and are there any solutions you can offer? Computer says? Fellow governors and I are mentoring some pupils in their Welsh Baccalaureate progress (don’t worry folks - I am not about to spill the beans on individuals!). However, one area we look at is how to undertake a bit of individual investigation into an area of work. Almost without fail the internet was the solution. Am I just being a “grumpy old man” to think that the computer is a great tool to help studies but like any source needs to be thoroughly checked? Could it be the internet which identified the Korean flag wrongly during the Olympics, or informed the BBC commentator for the Queen’s regatta that Nelson won the Battle of Waterloo! As for sat-nav errors, please don’t get me started! 38

covershot Y INSIGHT INTO YOUR MONTHL
A little reminder about our photo competition. Here is the chance to shine on the front cover of ‘essentiallyours’. I have decided to give myself a break! And hand over the creative frontage to you. It’s quite straight forward really, all I want you to do is come up with a front cover photograph for the September issue of Essentiallyours. That gives you plenty of time to get your act together to create a masterpiece fit to grace the front of 4000 magazines delivered in your area. Now, here come the technical bits and the very loose rules I have just made up, so concentrate! The photograph MUST be portrait format, not landscape! Which means, it must be long and thin, not short and fat. It must also be a recent, local photograph, as lovely as they are, I don’t want a shot of Big Ben or one of your wife on the beach at Bangor! For copyright purposes the image must be your own, please don’t be scanning in a Lord Lichfield from some magazine and passing it 44

off as your own, that would be very naughty and cheating ever so slightly! Digital format ONLY! The higher the resolution (minimum 300dpi please) the better. The competition is open to all - young and old, just be creative and original. For everyone to be in with the same chance, please only enter ONE image, multiple submissions will be withdrawn. Closing date is 31st August 2012. Please email your entries to me: carol@essentiallyours. co.uk Make sure you include your name, address, contact number and where the photo was taken. The decision of the editor is final, no correspondence will be entered into please don’t try to bribe us with lavish gifts, chocolate cake, silky underwear or Caribbean cruises, as it just won’t work... much! Get snapping - good luck - but most of all, enjoy it. I will look forward to receiving your entries. If in doubt about any of the technical bits, just email me!

COMES TO GRESFORD
&
MARFORD
Last summer Beryl Blackmore and I went on a pilgrimage to Iona with a group of fellow Methodists from Wrexham. We so enjoyed the experience we wanted to share it with others. Beryl has planned a walk around the Marford and Gresford area with points of interest along the way. If you are interested in joining our walk, it will take place on Sunday 23rd September, leaving Gresford Methodist Church at 3pm. We will return for tea in the church hall at 5pm. Rev.Richard Sharples, our Superintendent Minister, was a Warden on the island of Iona and shared our experience last year. He will come with us, and will conduct an Iona style Holy Communion Service in our Methodist Church at 6pm. It will be an afternoon to remember. If you want more details please contact me on 01244 571048.
Back behind the counter after my summer hols in Devon. There is something a bit special about waking up and looking out over the sea glinting white and silver in the sunshine whilst enjoying breakfast. To all of my customers that knew I was going to try surfing standing up as opposed to kneeling or lying on my stomach holding on for dear life, I can let you know I succeeded in a fashion, points for style would not be awarded. However please be warned I realised lifting cases of wine daily does not prepare you for the demands of catching those waves. I have to thank everyone that enjoyed the great offer on the Italian Primitivo recently and can say that it is a great summer red ideal to enjoy by the glass or with chicken dishes especially. Over the next few months we have some important dates: August is our Summer Sale of wines 25th – 31st. We are also busy compiling the Christmas gifts & hampers. Apologies for the lack of tastings!
September is “Wines of Chile” month and will run all month more details will be emailed to everyone of this new and I hope exciting promotion. September also sees me working again supporting Delmar Travel on one of their great events. I am also going to be tasting a lot of new wines, so in October we will have another Customer Panel Tasting. October We will be putting on a vertical tasting of the iconic wine from the Lebanon Chateau Musar, more details later. The Tasting Panel will meet date will be 11th October November the 15th is the date of our second annual tasting with over 100 wines available to taste, we will be hosting the event at the Ramada Hotel in Wrexham and tickets for customers are free via their email and to noncustomers will be £12 per person and available to purchase from the shop. Once again thank you for all your support.
The sale of real ale by the Pin (36 pints) has been going really well and I would like to thank Richard for being true to his business name ‘Mr Fixit’ for the great stand he made to hold the pin securely in position.

Here are a few pointers to get you started in the garden this month. Flower garden - Ensure containerised plants especially evergreens never go short of water during the summer while they’re developing their flower buds for next spring’s display. A shortage of water now can lead to a case of bud drop next year for plants, such as camellias and rhododendrons. Pots that have dried out should be submerged in water and left to soak for a few hours, ideally in a bowl, bath or water-butt. Even if it rains, pots often remain dry as they stand in the rain shadow of a house and their foliage acts as an umbrella. Support the stems of tall perennials and lilies with bamboo canes and watch out for lily beetles and their larvae. Pick any off and destroy them immediately. Deadhead roses as the blooms fade, cutting off the flowers just above the uppermost leaf on the stem. Trim back lavender bushes after flowering to remove the old blooms and shoot tips. Take care not to cut back too heavily into any old wood. Removing faded flowers from perennials and annual plants will also ensure a continued display of blooms. 48
Holiday watering - There are several things you can do to help prevent plants drying out. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid. You can also install an automatic trickle watering system on an outside tap, which is controlled by a timer and will turn water on and off each day. Continue taking summer cuttings of fuchsias, pelargoniums and tender perennials. These root quickly at this time of year, forming sturdy young plants that will successfully overwinter on a bedroom windowsill. Many houseplants, including coleus and African violets, can also be propagated from cuttings now. Trim hedges, especially hedging conifers that can become tall and annoy neighbours. Pests - Watch out for ants nesting in patio pots, where they can disturb root growth and reduce a plant’s performance. Standing pots in a large saucer of water helps deter them from settling in. Vine weevil is a particular problem in greenhouses and patio pots. Now is a good time to treat compost with biological pest control nematodes, which search out and kill weevil larvae. They can also be applied to the soil around attacked plants.

Dear Essentiallyours I live on Poplar Drive in Marford. My car was broken in to on Thursday 26th July. Nothing was stolen apart from a Sat Nav holder. Luckily I had emptied the Sat Nav, iPod etc from the car earlier in the evening before the car went for an MOT. I have also been speaking with someone from Gresford who also had their car broken in to on the same night. The police have been informed via 101 and they have told me there are enough reports to warrant a visit from an officer to assess the car and look for prints. I thought it was worth letting you know to make others in the area aware and highlight the importance of being vigilant. Name supplied.
