market, which took place between 10am and 4pm. Sounds great, and I hope a good time was had by all! The nice new road surface on chester road was well worth the temporary pain don’t you think? Mind you don’t you just hate it when the old surface has been stripped and you don’t notice the ‘ramp’ sign before you drive over it especially at night! Or is it just me? I have to say I hadn’t noticed it even needed resurfacing! More to the point with the budget looming and the current debate whether we need to spend our way out the current economic climate or freeze spending we might have been able to save a few quid there! What do I know!
March is here already. I wonder if we’ll have a freak warm and sunny week this March like we did last year. I wouldn’t complain if we did, would be very welcome. Mind you if my memory serves me right it was snowing the week after and then a year of very wet weather. January and February have dragged for me this year, despite having a birthday and a weekend away. Thankfully I had the box set of Miranda to see me through. Not sure if there are any more Miranda fans out there, but she used to be on TV on Monday evenings for a half It’s already feeling lighter and brighter, and hour comedy and I became a fan! A romantic tradition associated with Saint Valentine’s Day claims it as The Birds’ Wedding Day. By a happy coincidence on drawing back the curtains on February 14th the first sign of life I saw in the garden was a Blue Tit investigating a nest box. During recent weeks local bird activity has been focussing towards the forthcoming nesting season. Many birds are now singing to attract mates and claim territory. A large flock of some 2,000 migrating Lapwings heading for northern breeding grounds stopped off to feed on Trevalyn floods where they joined Shelducks and a pair of Gadwall. A week later on 18th February there were 400 more on Burton Meadows. Sadly Lapwings, once common farmland birds, have seriously declined in numbers as British breeders. It is estimated that we have lost half our population over the past 40 or 50 years. Common Gulls, also en route for northern Europe, call at Gresford Flash to wash and preen after foraging for worms in nearby fields. Common Gulls are not the most common species in the British Isles but the name is not inappropriate as their plumage pattern is basically that common to nearly all gulls. With their dark eyes, yellow beaks and clean lines they are attractive birds, especially when seen in good light. A party of 66 recently shared a Darland field with a flock of sheep, a couple of Crows and a “parliament” of 12 displaying Magpies.
Flocks of Long-tailed Tits travelling along hedgerows and visiting garden feeders are regular features of the winter birding scene. A 23-strong party has been working the ditches alongside the Holt Road throughout February. Our little back garden group of 7 has so far managed to steer clear of Sparrowhawks. Surprisingly Sparrowhawks can actually be beneficial to Longtailed Tits. A Long-tailed Tit’s nest, containing as many as 2,500 feathers, is one of the marvels of avian architecture . Under normal circumstances construction takes a pair a month or more to complete and much of that time is taken up searching for nest material. For them a plentiful supply of plucked feathers where a hawk has been feeding is a real time and labour saving bonus.

hugh.jones@wrexham.gov.uk STORE APPLICATION IN MARFORD I am working with the team of residents and retailers opposing the application for the new store, likely to be tenanted by Tesco, at the top of Marford Hill. The main objections are based on serious adverse traffic and pedestrian safety grounds. Planning legislation does not permit objections purely on the grounds of competition. However it is relevant to raise the real issue of potential damage to existing shops in Rossett and Gresford. Over intensive retail capacity could result in the loss of shops and important services such as Post Office and newspaper deliveries in our community. This would mean people having to travel further and by car in order to shop, which is contrary to environmental policy. HEDGEROWS I have arranged for the overhanging hedges in Harwoods Lane to be cut back. It is important that all property owners who have hedges that overhang public footpaths cut them back prior to the nesting season in April. This is an annual appeal and every year I receive complaints from handicapped people and mothers with prams who are forced to walk in the highway because the pavement is obstructed. The Council can give owners two weeks notice and then carryout the work on a recharge basis, unfortunately it is difficult to carry out major cutting between 1st March and 31st August without demonstrating that there are not nesting birds.
CYCLEWAY ON CHESTER ROAD A few people raised concerns over the cycleway on Chester Road. There was very little evidence that the cycleway on one side of the road, on which cars parked, contributed to the safety of cyclists. In fact it narrowed the carriageway in the direction of Chester, thus making it more dangerous on that side of the road.To replace it would cost ÂŁ20,000 and none of the arguments in favour were backed up by any evidence. This was a view endorsed by the Community Counci. I have negotiated with officers that money will be spent on the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit outside Darland School, this will operate during relevant hours. The presence of the signs and other measures will contribute to the reduction in overall speed on Chester Road and will increase the safety for all road users including cyclists. SPEEDING There are increasing concerns regarding the speed of vehicles on several of our roads In particular Burton Road and Rosemary Lane. Driving along lanes with no pavements and around blind bends with no regard to the fact that driveways exit directly onto lanes, and pedestrians are walking in the road is dangerous. Sadly some of the drivers are local or regular delivery drivers on the same route each morning. I recently reported a GHA Coach Driver to North Wales Police. essentialeaster As well as adopting the festival of Eostre, the Egg, representing fertility and re-birth in pagan times, was also adopted as part of the Christian Easter festival and it came to represent the ‘resurrection’ or re-birth of Christ after the crucifixion and some believe it is a symbol of the stone blocking the Sepulchre being ‘rolled’ away. In the UK and Europe, the earliest Easter eggs were painted and decorated hen, duck or goose eggs, a practice still carried on in parts of the world today. As time went by, artificial eggs were made and by the end of the 17th century, manufactured eggs were available for purchase at Easter, for giving as Easter gifts and presents. Easter eggs continued to evolve through the 18th and into the 19th Century, with hollow cardboard Easter eggs filled with Easter gifts and sumptuously decorated, culminating with the fabulous Faberge Eggs. Encrusted with jewels, they were made for the Czar’s of Russia by Carl Faberge, a French jeweller. Surely these were the ‘ultimate’ Easter gift, to buy even a small one now would make you poorer by several millions of pounds.
THE CHOCOLATE EASTER EGG It was at about this time (early 1800’s) that the first chocolate Easter egg appeared in Germany and France and soon spread to the rest of Europe and beyond. The first chocolate eggs were solid soon followed by hollow eggs. Although making hollow eggs at that time was no mean feat, because the easily worked chocolate we use today didn’t exist then, they had to use a paste made from ground roasted cacao beans. By the turn of the 19th Century, the discovery of the modern chocolate making process and improved mass manufacturing methods meant that the Chocolate Easter Egg was fast becoming the Easter Gift of choice in the UK and parts of Europe, and by the 1960’s it was well established worldwide.

A Diary of Douglas the Westie
Regular readers will remember my friend Highway, the one Himself calls Road Rage, who lives in Cyprus. I have had an e-mail from him inviting me to spend the summer out there. He shares his home with four other canines, two of whom are rather attractive ladies. I was thinking of going on strike in any case; Himself does not pay me one penny for my literary genius and I feel he is taking advantage of me. The straw that really broke the camel’s back was when I found out that we are off to Ynys Mon again for Easter. Only last week I was dragged off there yet again on a family history search. So if you don’t hear from me for a couple of months, you will know where I am. Talking of striking, my friend Striker and me (I call him Strike for short and he calls me Doug) are launching a petition against drivers who speed around the lanes. Every day we take our lives in our paws and have to jump for safety. Last week Strike was nearly crushed under a bus - enough is enough I say. In fact, I am looking on the North Wales Police web site to see if I can sign up and become

a Special Dogstable, so I can arrest all the offenders. I think I would look quite smart in a blue uniform with a yellow high viz jacket. Himself was telling me the Police are going to be able to recruit people of breeding and intelligence straight in at senior officer level. I think Chief Superintendant Douglas sounds quite refined and who knows, the ladies might quite like a gent in uniform. Well, at last it’s spring (or so they tell me) - Dydd gwyl Dewi Sant, St David’s Day. As my paws stroke the keyboard of my typewriter I am wearing the Clan Douglas Tartan to ensure my Scottish purity. You will note that I say typewriter; Himself is so mean at times! Why can’t I have an i-pad like everyone else? At the very least I should have a Kindle so that I can curl up in my basket at night, cocoa in one paw and Kindle in the other, drifting off to sleep reading my bedtime story. Talking of Kindles (hint, hint), I have been asked to produce an e-version of my literary writings. Apparently all the well known writers are doing so. If only Himself would pay me, I could save up and buy my own. Ah well, here’s hoping! Bye for now Douglas.

essentialgardens Here are some handy pointers to get you started in the garden area as the weather perks up a bit. Order bedding plants - Fuchsias, geraniums, marguerites and other young plug plants. It’s also a good time to order summerflowering bulbs, such as dahlia, gladioli and eucomis. Pruning roses - Remove any dead, diseased or damaged stems from roses this month. On bush varieties, cut stems back to an outward-facing bud, shortening them by about a third or half. Pruning shrubs - Prune away one or perhaps two flowering shoots from large mahonias each year, after flowering. This will encourage a succession of new replacement shoots to grow up from the base. Old, leggy shoots can be cut right down to ground level or you can stagger the length of stems to create a more interesting shape. The stems of dogwoods, willows, hardy fuchsias and ceratostigma should also be pruned back hard this month to encourage fresh, brightly coloured new growth. Cut down tall stems on Buddleia davidii to emerging shoots lower down the plant, shaping the shrub to control its size. Divide perennials - Lift and divide congested clumps of perennials or plant new ones. People gardening on light soils may have completed this task last autumn, but those of us on heavy clay soils benefit from waiting until spring when conditions are warmer and drier. Pruning clematis - Summer-flowering clematis varieties that blossom on the current season’s growth, such as Clematis ‘Etoile Violette’, need to have last year’s growth pruned out now. Cut any tangled old stems down to a pair of new shoots near ground level as soon as possible. Divide snowdrops - Lift and divide any congested snowdrops after flowering but while still in leaf. Carefully tease the clumps apart and replant the bulbs at the same depth they were before. Fertilising - Sprinkle general-purpose fertiliser along the base of hedges and around trees and shrubs, followed by a generous mulch of rotted compost. Enough to keep you going for a bit - go on, get out there, do it, do it now! 44

Inès Roberts from Rossett is preparing for the challenge of a lifetime. On Sunday 21 April 2013 Inès Roberts will run the gruelling 26.2 mile route through the famous streets of London to raise money to help fight meningitis, a lifethreatening disease that affects thousands of people every year. Inès contracted meningitis in April 1997, leaving her wheelchair bound, having lost the use of both legs. With intense physiotherapy, she was able to learn to walk again. She will be training hard for the next 6 weeks and is asking Essentiallyours readers to support her every step of the way! Inès said “Running 26.2 miles is a tough challenge in anyone’s book but I have made it my goal and I am going to give it everything I’ve got with great backing from friends and family. I know I can do it and having had first-

Gill Tanner Gresford Methodist Church We were pleased to welcome the choir from the Rofft School to our church on Education Sunday a few weeks ago. They were led by their music teacher Mr. Fisher and sang two songs The first one was entitled “Life is a Wonderful Thing” which they sang with gusto making us all glad to be alive, and the second song was in praise of their teachers. Then on Sunday 24th February our church was the venue for the act of Morning Worship on BBC Radio 4. A Methodist church in the Wrexham circuit was needed and ours was chosen, probably because it had the biggest car park to accommodate the BBC trucks and the Rhos Male Voice Choir. Our Minister, Rev. Patrick Rudden led the service, and the preacher was Rev. Stephen Wigley, Chair of the Welsh Synod of Methodist Churches. The readers were from our congregation, Sue Happs, Tracey Roberts and Olwen Jones. As the service was broadcast live at 8.15am a breakfast of bacon butties, tea and coffee were served to all who came and were staying for the usual morning service at 10.30am. Patrick and Stephen took the service again, and this time we could all sing, as when the Rhos Choir were there we had to keep quiet! Not easy for Methodists who like to vocalise their faith as our newly published hymn book says in the title “Sing the Faith”.
In spite of a snowy day we still managed to raise over £200 for Nightingale House Hospice thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Our grand-daughter Alice, who had travelled up with her family from Bristol, gave an account of a trip she made last summer with the South Cotswold Rangers travelling across Europe by train. Their journey finished in Romania where they spent several days working in a children’s day centre. They ran a play scheme with children of all ages and left with good memories of happy children. They will continue to support the centre for some time. Grateful thanks to all who supported us, especially our hardy helpers who all managed to make it through the snow, and our family who got safely back to Bristol the following day. Our next event will be a very special summer garden party on 22nd June 2013. We have been fund raising for almost twenty years and feel the time has come to slow down and take stock. It would appear that the person who stated that a decent shop is just what Marford needs is unaware of the fact that in the early eighties it was an elderly Marford resident who organised a petition against an application to establish shops in Marford. It was considered that such a development would lower the tone of the area and therefore was not acceptable to the residents, if it was not acceptable then why is it deemed acceptable now ? I am not really surprised for the number of people who choose to live in this community and issue wild distorted statements before checking their facts is alarming. How many of them remember that Wrexham was once an attractive Medieval town and now look at it, full of large tin sheds and empty shops, is that what the residents of Gresford and Marford want to see in their community ? Of course the decision will rest with the Councillors however, members of the planning committee who visited a site in Gresford on 16th March last year thought that they were in Marford and were not aware that there was a community hall with a car park owned by Wrexham council at the north end of Pant Lane until Beryl Blackmore informed them of the fact. Needless to say the application was granted even though 64 residents were opposed to the proposal so there is not much hope of them arriving at a sensible decision regarding this present application. Then there are people who refer to Maes-y-Pant as Marford quarry or quarries when there was Pant Lane quarry in Gresford and Rossett sand and gravel quarry to the north of Pant Wood. When such ignorance abounds from Councillors whether they be elected or co-opted, paid or unpaid how can we expect common sense to prevail when a decision has to be made on any issue involving our community. Sweet Peas from the gardens at SWEET PEAS traditionally grown in the garden of the Erddig House in North Wales, one of the jewels in the National Trust’s crown, have inspired a special silver beaker made by silversmith Rauni Higson as part of the exhibition “Studio Silver Today”. The capsule exhibition, which opens in the Print Room at Erddig on Saturday March 9, is a joint initiative between the Goldsmiths’ Company and the National Trust. The exhibition focuses on the work of silversmith Rauni Higson, herself no stranger to the beauty of the area as she lives and works in a converted chapel in Snowdonia. One of the highlights of the Goldsmiths’ Company’s collaboration with the National Trust at Erddig is a silver beaker commissioned by the Company. The Company’s brief to Rauni was to design and make a beaker which is inspired by and encapsulates some aspect of the property. Rauni found her inspiration for the beaker in Erddig’s romantic association with the sweet pea, a flower which has long been cultivated in the beautiful gardens that surround the early 18th century country house. A modest silver bowl decorated with a design of sweet peas which sits on the table in the dining room at Erddig drew her attention to the sweet pea connection. The bowl had been presented in about 1903 to the then Squire Philip Yorke II and his Head Gardener as a prize for their award winning sweet peas. Rauni recounts: “The bowl seemed to capture something of the spirit of Erddig and epitomised the close relationship between the family and their staff. I then noticed the significance of sweet peas to the inhabitants of Erddig; they are grown in
the gardens, often mentioned in the notes on menus as table decorations and modern floriferous varieties are developed locally.” During her residency at Erddig Rauni will hand raise the beaker, hammering a flat disc of silver up and over steel stakes to create the beaker’s form. She will then fill the beaker with pitch and finally chase the design over the surface using small chisellike punches, of various shapes, which she will lightly hammer across the metal, with many thousands of blows. The beaker is a prize for a draw which is open to any of the visitors to Erddig while the exhibition is on. When the exhibition closes on November 2, the winning entry will be drawn and one lucky person will be the owner of an exquisite silver beaker inspired by the sweet peas at Erddig House in North Wales, one of Britain’s finest historic houses. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Goldsmiths’ Company is working in collaboration with the National Trust in hosting the exhibition “Studio Silver Today” featuring a leading British silversmith and telling the story of the Goldsmiths’ Company and its on-going patronage of contemporary British silver. Rosemary Ransome Wallis, Curator of the Collections at Goldsmiths’ Hall, said: “Rauni was the obvious choice as artistin-residence at Erddig for the “Studio Silver Today” exhibition. Her out-going personality, her virtuoso craft skill as a silversmith and her unique creative vitality make her a fitting ambassador of the silversmiths’ art. She is truly a star from Snowdonia.” A short film produced about Rauni’s residency at Erddig, her work and her influences is on view during the exhibition.
RAUNI HIGSON www.raunihigson.co.uk Rauni (42) is a silversmith based in a converted chapel in Snowdonia, where the dramatic scenery informs her work. Her work is highly sculptural, but always designed for function, and her fluid forms come alive when used as they were intended. Rauni’s work is rooted in a sculptural approach to functional objects. She is fascinated by technique and process, particularly foldforming, which she has been developing her personal interpretation of for some years. It is no surprise that Rauni’s inspiration is drawn from the natural world, particularly the dramatic mountains and coastline of Snowdonia, where she lives and works. She aims to capture the beauty of nature without directly imitating it. Movement, flow and growth patterns are a particular fascination. Much of her work is to commission, including a recent Royal Wedding gift, three pieces in the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, a travelling communion set, candelabra for Asprey, and a 72-piece canteen of cutlery. Rauni is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

WHO READS THEM? The vast majority of blogs have a very small audience. For instance, some gap year students use them to keep friends and family up to date with their travels. Few people blog to become famous though some have earned notoriety via their writings and have turned their journals into a book. The most successful blogs have a community of readers and become more about the conversations generated by updates rather than about the entries themselves. In many industries, particularly the technology world, blogs are becoming the place that news breaks first. WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? Blogs have become the standard bearer for the second wave of the web in which users collaborate to create content rather than simply get what they are given by more mainstream outlets. Some blogs, and bloggers, have become very influential and their opinion on an event can shape how the rest of the world sees it.

Kedgeree of Arbroath smokies METHOD Melt the butter in a large pan, add the onion and cook for 3 minutes until it begins to soften, add spices cook for a further 3 minutes. Add the rice and stock, reduce the heat, cover and cook for 15 minutes. Flake the Arbroath smokies and add to rice. Stir in gently and cook for a further 5 minutes. Serve the kedgeree garnished with the egg and with a sprinkling of parsley.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR FOR GRESFORD
Call For Sites As part of the consultation on the proposed Local Development Plan, the planning department recently held a “Call For Sites.” This gave developers, landowners and the like a chance to nominate what they see as suitable areas outside the current settlement limit for future development and the call ended at the end of February. I would like to stress that I am not aware of any specific proposals, but I can assure everyone in the Gresford area that once I do know, the proposals will be getting a good and fair airing. Tesco’s In Marford - NIMBY! Well it’s the talking point of the two villages that might be affected by it being built. The question, one of many is, why not? The building itself isn’t going to be a huge affair, so there won’t be a large blot on the landscape. The store will and can only be a small Tesco express store and will stock food bread, milk etc. The arguments of it being a small car park, what will it be like if a shop opens there? Well, I have never seen the car park full, just a few cars in there from parents parking in there then walking the children into school and the other people parking up then crossing the road to catch the bus in to Chester! The worries of HGV’S travelling up Marford Hill will be a danger? It’s only the same and the vehicles delivering to the Spar shops probably smaller who knows? What if the new store, if it goes ahead, was a Sainsbury’s or Waitrose would there be an outcry from the people of Marford? I doubt it very much! What a lot of you seem to forget that there is a large number of elderly in the area and can’t drive or have no car. So it would be so much easier for them to get the
bits and pieces there. I have spoken to people who have said to me that they would shop there, even though they have signed the petition??? why I asked ”because it will be nice and handy for me”. I can understand the petitions in the local shops saying it will affect them with trade etc. I honestly think that yes it will, as the people are just passing by driving through the area will probably pop in to the shop. But if everybody who has signed the petition, showing their backing to the local shop and all that they stand for will still use the local shop, as you have shown your support for them haven’t you? The business people among us understand the importance of competition, so why should this be an exception? Jobs will be created, surely that is good news for the young? GRESFORD VILLAGE CENTRE – ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT STUDY • March 2013 Ideas for the improvement of Gresford Village centre are progressing. The designers ( BCAL) appointed by Image have developed the initial ideas into series of plans showing possible options for the improvement. A major influence on this is the arrangements for car parking, and several options have been prepared and subsequently discussed with the business owners : a period of ‘fine tuning’ has then taken place to take on board comments made. BCAL have then met with members of the Borough Council’s Highways and Planning teams to check whether the ideas conflict with road safety, with the general feedback being positive. The designs are now being prepared for the public exhibition.
Dear Essentiallyours Magazine As a long time resident of these parts it was so disappointing to read one of your readers responses entitled ‘supermarket sweep’. Where is this persons concern for the community? If they had cared to do any research whatsoever into the after effects of a store such as this coming to a village of this size then they would see that it tends to be likes of newsagents and off licences which are forced out of business first. The point made about the Gresford shopping arcade being ‘dangerous’ is something that may well be worthy of consideration and should probably be addressed. However, I am somewhat mystified as to what relevance this has to this proposed development? Also I was under the impression that the Thresher group sadly went out of business nationwide. I’m struggling to see how the Spar’s of Gresford and Rossett could possibly have been responsible for that? As for this person’s belief that certain other businesses are ‘ bomb proof’, how could they possibly be sure of this, have they seen copies of their accounts? With reference to ‘without the Spar’ comment, the idea that such a store would somehow close the Spar and everyone else would survive seems extremely naive to me. I do, however, share this persons views on one thing, I too sympathise with the people who have homes which will affected by this proposed monstrosity. It would clearly be seriously out of character for this area and there would appear to be numerous road safety issues already present at this location without the construction of something which would quite clearly make them worse. A far more positive approach would surely be to look at how we can improve our current retail areas (car parking is clearly an issue) and do everything we can as a community to support our existing local stores and make sure that our villages remain as villages and not be allowed to morph into characterless over runs of existing towns with unwelcome developments such as this. James Jackson aka James Godfrey was born into a loving family, he grew up with his three brothers one of which was a Michael Jackson fan. During the course of his childhood, thanks to his brother, James would listen to Michael Jackson music, and watch films of the star’s such as Moonwalker. On 31st March 1999, James’s mother died of cancer aged just 47 in Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham, this was a tough time however, if it weren’t for the bereavement support service provided by Nightingale House and the support of his friends and family James wouldn’t be the person he is today. In 2002 after watching several of Michael Jackson’s live performances and listening to many of the King Of Pop’s greatest hits, James became inspired to perform like his idol, and so got the help of a group of friends in school to help organize a solo Michael Jackson tribute concert in aid of Nightingale House Hospice. James then left his passion on hold whilst he studied for his GCSE’s, that was until 5th March 2009, when Michael Jackson himself announced his ‘This Is It’ concerts in London, this immediately started triggering the passion once again in James, then on 25th une 2009, after hearing of the tragic death of the King Of Pop, old school friends were telling James that he should organize another Michael Jackson tribute and make a comeback to the stage. So after a few short weeks, James decided the time was right to start planning, but this time he didn’t want a solo tribute like he has done in the past, he wanted something bigger and better just like what Michael Jackson himself wanted with his ‘This is It’ concerts, and so made a call out for dancers who were willing to participate in the event. The next concert that is planned is on Saturday 27th April and is in aid of Anthony Nolan, it is being held at the Wrexham Memorial Hall and tickets start from just £5.00 and are available from the Wrexham Tourist Information Centre (Tel: 01978 292015) the show is suitable for all ages are welcome.

PLANNING APPLICATIONS It now looks likely that the planning application for a small (less than 300 sq. metre retail space) shop on the Red Lion Car Park will be heard on 2nd April. The Planning Committee decided in February to allow the demolition of the old antique shop opposite the Plough in Gresford to be replaced by a bar, restaurant and flats, despite concerns about parking and deliveries. MAES-Y-PANT One Sunday recently, a group of volunteers cleared the old track between the car park and the field. Please look out for litter-picking and other volunteer days on the website. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING I have been surprised that the incidents of near misses you have reported to me are so varied. There seems to be no particular pattern of direction, type of vehicle or driver. Please 48

ROADS AND PAVEMENTS I was so pleased to see the new pavements on Claypit Lane and Woodlands Road, despite work being held up by a snowfall. The smooth surface should now make pushing a buggy to school or using a wheelchair more pleasant.The kerbstones across Woodland Road had been particularly irritating. Work on the roadway on Marford Hill and Claypit Lane will have to wait until the new financial year.
