your life, your home, your community. I attempted rowing interval training at the gym this morning and I’ve not been the same since. Mind you I haven’t done this for years. I’m still trying to row 2000 metres under my best time of 9 minutes but can’t quite seem to do it, and thought the interval training would help. I keep hearing and being told that short bursts of exercise that gets your heart rate up right up there is a better way of exercising and burns more calories over a longer period. Anyway after 5 rowing sessions of 500 metres full pelt I’d had enough, felt quite light headed. Don’t try this at home I think the phrase is, but I bet there’s lots of you thinking what’s her problem that’s easy! Anyway unlike me I hope you are all well and back to normal now after the summer? I’m sure lots of families are breathing a sigh of relief now that the children are going back to school and I can imagine why!

It’s not a surprise we all stayed at home last year what with all that rain, and avoided going shopping unnecessarily. Most small businesses seem to be doing a little better this year in general which is encouraging, but the odd ones have had a quieter summer where probably the lovely weather has worked against their particular service. Oh I don’t know, but I know this much having a lovely summer makes the world look a better place! So I hope you’re all feeling refreshed and ready for action. I know it’s only October but for some of our advertisers Christmas is a key time, and it’s their fault I have to mention the dreaded word so soon after summer! At least we don’t have to order our turkeys just yet, but I bet some of you have!

By the end of September most summer migrants were moving south en route for their winter quarters. A glut of insects in Maes y Pant’s deciduous trees attracted a steady stream of migrating Willow Warblers, Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs. At Llay Pool families of Swallows hawked for flies over the water while others rested on barbed wire fences alongside Meadow Pipits. Nearby White Wagtails foraged in mud stirred up by cows. These were birds of passage but some local House Martins were still feeding young in the nest. Although, unlike urban Swifts, House Martins normally prefer more rural sites, one late breeding pair unusually had a nest in the centre of Chester high under eaves in Eastgate Street. Strong offshore winds mid-month gave good views of shearwaters and petrels off the North Wales coast and even drove the odd marine migrant well inland. There was a remarkable sighting of a Gannet flying west over the A483 between Pulford and Rossett on September 18th. Winter visitors from Scandinavia and northern Europe are now settling in. Fieldfares and

Redwings can be seen rooting for worms in fields or guzzling hawthorn berries in the hedgerows. We can also expect them in gardens where fruit is available. This summer has produced a good harvest of bright red honeysuckle berries (favoured by Bullfinches) which, like eye-catching pyracantha, are much appreciated. The provision of seeds, nuts and fat is a magnet for garden birds. Our most numerous visitors to feeders are the members of the tit family. Great, Blue, Coal and Long-tailed are regular but there are two rarer species worth looking out for especially as they now appear to be in serious decline. These are Marsh and Willow Tits, tricky to separate but immediately identifiable by their solid black crowns and bibs. My last local sighting of a Willow Tit was in Poulton in the late 1990s but there have been reports of Marsh Tits within the last three years by Darland pool. Any information about either will be very welcome.

The changes at Maes-y-Pant have been dramatic this year.Those that have visited recently will see that a new car park has been installed at Pant Lane. We’ve planted part of the area and fortunately the rain came just in time. Unfortunately as soon as this was completed, we had to close the gates. A condition of planning consent from Wrexham BC was that we needed to upgrade outside the entrance and construct a footpath before we brought the car park into use.We hadn’t planned for this. The cost is prohibitive unless we can find sponsors to help us. We’re actively seeking sponsorship but it is frustrating, as you might imagine, so please bear with us. I now have a plea. WE NEED YOUR VOTE. We are in competition for a £3000 grant from Lloyds Bank with 3 other organisations. We’ve bid for the money to create a wetland area and shallow pond in the centre of the site. Mark Leather qualified as a physiotherapist in 1983 and initially spent 4 years in the NHS before embarking on an extensive career in professional sport. He has spent over 10 years in the FA Premier League including 6 years as the Head Physiotherapist for Liverpool FC. Wrexham Residents Against the Power Scheme, held their latest and most successful fund raising event on Saturday 7th September with a garden party in the grounds of Pickhill Old Hall courtesy of Henry and Sarah Ormrod. WRAPS are raising funds for legal advice and representation and for publicity material. Jackie Grice, responsible for fund raising for the group, said the family “fun” day was very well attended showing the tremendous and growing support in the communities around Wrexham. Jackie extended her thanks to all who supported the day in whatever way. WRAPS opposes the proposals put forward by Wrexham Power last year for a large conventional gas fired power station together with its 400kV pylons to the South and East of Wrexham. WRAPS advocate a much smaller sustainable or at least a genuine high efficiency CHP proposal within the Industrial Estate that could deliver real benefit to local businesses as well as reduce CO2 and other emissions for the area. Such an alternative could connect to the local Scottish Power electricity grid without the need for even more pylons avoiding the visual blight and harm to tourism people fear.

Erddig Comes Clean About Dirty Secret! Erddig will dish the dirt from Monday 16 September, as the annual deep cleaning of the prestigious collection comes out of the shadows and takes centre stage. Visitors might even be able to pick up a tip or two from the skilled conservation team as they talk about their work with guests. The property boasts the second largest collection, a total of 30,000 items, in any National Trust house so there’s plenty to be getting on with. It was a condition of the the last Squire, the late Philip Yorke when handing over the house and estate, that nothing was to be removed from the house. Philip famously said: "My only interest for many years has been that this unique establishment for which my family have foregone many luxuries and comforts over seven generations should now be dedicated to the enjoyment of all those who may come here and see a part of our national heritage preserved for all foreseeable time." The unique collection ranges from the
rare and magnificent to the ordinary and everyday; ranging from 18th century tapestries to 20th century false teeth! Every year the fragile collection is treated to a deep clean, requiring a steady hand and often a head for heights in order to reach the topmost parts, the parts that ordinary cleaners just can’t reach! House & Collections Manager, Graeme Clarke, said: “We’re so excited to be sharing this with visitors. Cleaning a collection as large and as complex as ours is a bit like painting the Forth Bridge – once you get to the end you need to start over again! “Traditionally, this work is done behind closed doors, but visitors enjoy seeing conservation work in action, so we’ve decided to make it a permanent part of our house experience.” Work starts on Monday 16 September and moves through the house until Sunday 3 November, so there will be different work to see each day between 12:30 and 4:30 daily.
FIVE DIRTY FACTS 1. There are 46 rooms open to visitors and 20 store rooms to keep clean. 2. Cleaning tasks include vacuuming the teddy bears, cleaning the chandeliers using small cotton wool swabs (from scaffolding) and brushing clean the Victorian shower. 3. The 3 main bugs to battle are the Furniture Beetle (aka wood worm), Death Watch Beetle and Carpet Beetle. 4. There are 8 staff and scores of volunteers who help with specific tasks and projects. 5. The environment in the house is constantly monitored, checking light, humidity and temperature, to prevent damage to the collection.

Work has started on clearing the ditch along Gamford Lane; once the main works on Darland Lane are complete the ditch will be piped.The developers of Pippin Lane have agreed to re-instate the original drains to the lake. This, together with work to be carried out by WCBC, should result in an end to the road flooding and also the flooding to gardens in Broadoaks and Pippin Lane.

Remembering the inner wheel. by Terry Davies It’s always such a pleasure for me to take my car to be serviced at the Trotting Mare garage, Knolton, because I know it will be well looked after by a staff that are not only very efficient ,but also a bunch of very nice ‘chaps’. We always manage to have an interesting chat about cars etc., but this time Dan was quite intrigued by the fact that his neighbour had found an old 1970s Raleigh bicycle at the back of his garage, which had a little Ducati motor on the rear wheel, to aid with the pedalling. BSA also produced their ‘Winged Wheel’ for bicycles at that time. However, this story reminded me of a colleague I chatted with many years ago about vintage cars etc., and how many car manufacturers produced bicycles first before progressing to cars. Singer was one of them and also made sewing-machines as well as bicycles. “I know that” said Cledwyn. “ My grandfather was a Brewery Rep. in the Wrexham area in the late 1800’s, and used to pedal around the public houses on his Singer tricycle and often took his wife and their dog on the basket seat on the backand that extra weight plus the frequent refreshment he consumed during his journeys, tired him out! Then in 1898 Singer introduced their Motor Wheel, which was an ingenious petrol engine built into a wheel, which could be fitted into the front forks of a tricycle- he fitted one to his tricycle, and his burden was eased.” 32
I asked him what had happened to the old tricycle. “I don’t know” he said, “ but I know when Singer produced their first motor car in 1904, Grandad bought one, which was sheer luxury after the tricycle. I’ve no idea where the tricycle went- but I’ve still got the motor wheel.” I couldn’t believe my ears, then asked “Well where is it now?” “It’s in the cupboard under the stairs - would you like to see it?” I nodded in amazement, and he brought it out to show me. “It hasn’t got a tyre on because it had been sent to Singer’s for an overhaul, and was never used after it came back, as the car had replaced it.” he said. So, I purchased the wheel off him and kept it for several years before being persuaded to sell it to a fellow who wanted to motorise his tricycle to use in the London to Brighton vintage run. However, back to the BSA ‘Winged Wheel’. A friend named Ernie, who worked on the railway in Wrexham had one, and we used to tease him mercilessly about how slow he rode about. But one night, he burst into a meeting we were at, waving a piece of paper above his head and laughing with pleasure. “I’ve had a ticket for speeding” he shouted “ and I’m going to frame it and hang it on the wall!”

essential gardening This month brings a fantastic display for those gardens that have plants that give Autumn foliage. It usually brings a multitude of different hues. This month you really notice the change in temperature and the sudden shortness in daylight ( How depressing) but the days when sunny bring a sharp freshness. Maintenance: It is a great time to visit gardens that have Autumn colour such as Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire and Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent. Rake up fallen leaves and either place them on the compost or pile them up to make leaf mould. If you have not started clearing up its time you did, burn or bin any perennial weeds or debris that shows signs of fungal infection. Dig over empty beds. Finish planting evergreen shrubs. This is the best time of the year to take hardwood cuttings and collect any berries from trees and shrubs for seed sowing. Give conifer hedges a last trim for the winter sets in. Plants new climbers and perennials.Protect alpines from winter wet. Lift and store dahlias, glodioli and summer flowering bulbs. Tidy ponds and remove pumps for the winter. Make new lawns from turf. Cut down the dying tops of perennial vegetables. 36
Lift and divide rhubarb. If you have any fruit trees fix grease bands to there trunks to catch pest as they crawl up. Insulate the greenhouse and if you have whitewashed remove it and if you don’t have a heater get one if you do have check that its in working order. It is probably your last chance to sow grass seed. Finish off planting spring bedding for next year. Pick up the last of your apples and pears before they get damaged. Lift and store the reminder of your tender perennials. Lift and store potatoes and carrots in a dry and darkish cool place. You should start to prepare the ground for planting bare rooted stock for next month. Sow sweet peas for next year under cover. It is best to do all the jobs in the garden sooner rather than later as with the shortening days you will only have the weekend to do things. If you have heavy soils like clay make sure you dig them so the frosts, rain, wind and snow can break it down. Incorporate as much organic matter as possible to improve the structure of the soil. Plant trees at this time of the year while the soil is warm for the roots to take hold. All this should keep you busy!

New headmistress Abbey Gate College, which remains an established 4-18 independent school on the outskirts of Chester has a new Headmistress. Mrs Tracy Pollard, is now very firmly ‘in post’, and after her first month at the helm of the College the public and College events come thick and fast. The annual Prize Giving/ Speech Day Event at Chester Racecourse on the 20th September was followed by the Open Morning at the Senior School on Saturday 28th September and then the staff, parents and friends of the College are back at Chester Racecourse on the 12th October for the Annual Ball. Tracy has taught in a number of schools and her most recent post was as Deputy Headmistress at Alderley Edge School for Girls. In the College’s termly Broadsheet magazine the pupils interviewed Tracy and her answer to the question; “Do you have a set goal for your time here?” was “I have been blown away by just everything that you as pupils and staff do and achieve here at Abbey Gate College and I think my biggest goal is to get more people to know about us and of your achievements. The College is ‘a jewel in the crown’ and I have been amazed and delighted by all that is and has been achieved here. My goal is simply to spread the word”.
Tracy is a big lover of sport and music group Take That and has taken much of her inspiration from her parents and decathlete Daley Thompson. She is ready for the challenges of leading the College into its next successful phase and when asked what she was most looking forward to at Abbey Gate College replied “Getting to know everyone, the staff and the pupils and making a difference”. Making a positive difference to the lives of children since the College opened in 1977 has been part of the College ethos and if you would like to meet Tracy to discuss her vision for the College then please make an appointment to meet her in person and view the fantastic facilities at both the Senior School in Saighton and/or the infant and Junior Department in the beautiful village of Aldford.

as little tax is being paid as possible. After all you work hard, paying your taxes all your life, you don’t want to be needlessly paying HMRC after you have retired. The traditional ways of planning for retirement are past their sell-by date. How lavish, comfortable or tough your retirement years will be is going to be down to you. That’s why it is important to get planning early. There is nothing stopping you from getting a clear view of your current position by establishing what your likely state pension entitlement would be. It is also worth contacting the pension trustees of your current and previous employers, who will be able to provide pension forecasts, as will the companies managing any private pension plans.
