a mesmerizing juxtaposition of time and space where every moment counts. This special watch visibly took inspiration from the Middle East. Punctuating the purity of surroundings in white and grey marble integrating oxidized brass are cylindrical product displays in eyecatching green neon. This reflects the core HYT belief that time is the elixir of life. The H0 Middle East Edition expresses this via

its patented micro-fluidic module. Mechanically activated bellows meticulously manage the journey of two immiscible liquids, one blue and one transparent, through a curved capillary, to illustrate time’s passage. Super-LumiNova® coating on the tube’s underside echoes the fascination of colored liquids in the labs of our imaginations. The intrinsic message of flow is communicated by the watch’s drop-like sapphire glass facilitating the perception of time from many different angles. Time is a treasure – a truth that the new store and the H0 Middle East Edition bring to life. The precious nature of every passing moment is mirrored by an eye for detail and a passion for paradox. Different

shades of grey in the watch’s materials and textures, from the satin finishes on the dial to its rubber strap, demonstrate the magic that can happen when black and white join forces. All digits are in Arabic numerals. This builds a bridge from regional history to contemporary esthetics with intra-material time indication and the impression of time being suspended to three-dimensional effect around the case sides. Neon writing on the new boutique’s wall thoughtfully asks, “How long is forever?”. A difficult question to answer. The H0 Middle East Edition reminds that there is no time like the present from which to salute yesterday and greet tomorrow.

AZZI & OSTA

Haute Couture Allows Us The Freedom Interview by Farouk CHEKOUFI

F

ashion, by its very nature, is collaborative, and we consider that we create our best work when we do it together, neither one with a set task, it’s about the chemistry. Two designers in our case, complement each other’s visions, we challenge viewpoints and encourage one another’s unique touch on the final look, the mood, the styling- we believe the result is a united point of view, rich in its story fashioned through multi-dimensions and layers of differing perspectives.

How do you combine your creativity between innovation and tradition?

The foundation of our work lies in tradition and, in particular, deep respect for the principles of Haute Couture. Haute Couture is the essence of our brand, and it cannot exist without tradition. Our creativity stems from the inspiration of the past reimagined for the present, and this is where being innovative comes in. It is a state of mind, the mastery of fusing the history with the vision of the future to achieve modernity and relevance. What kind of role does haute couture play in your life?

Haute Couture allows us the freedom to express our creativity as artists, to translate dreams. It is the core principle of our brand and lends itself to our ready-to-wear collections as well; the two are irrevocably interlinked through Haute Couture yet adapted to meet the lifestyles of our customers.

fusing the history with the vision of the future to achieve modernity and relevance.

Could you outline your vision in the future?

Our vision is to establish a global renown brand, created in the Arab world, enjoyed by women all around the world. We launched our ready to wear line nearly one year ago. It has performed exceptionally well in some of the best boutiques in the Middle East and, in Europe, and this is very exciting for our growth. In parallel, we continue to perfect our art of couture, to bring dreams to life. To have our “art” respected by costume designers, collectors and featured in museums- this would be wonderful. What are your main influences?

Sometimes a moment in history, although often a memory or daily scenario, a color or a photograph that resonates with us- we look at the unconventional for inspiration. What are your inspirations for the main collections and the brand extension?

Our Haute Couture collections tend to be based upon a period that we

love to reimagine for the present day. Whereas for ready-to-wear, the inspiration is more emotive, an expression also from a moment in time, but more about a mood or a style that was evident and which we reinterpret. AZZI & OSTA and the world Haute Couture?

It’s a world we love, where we are set free and, a world that we feel we belong to. Haute couture with all its rules challenges us to keep striving for perfection and to push artistic boundaries. And, it is a world through which we hope to gain admiration for our work, to be discovered and embraced by notable industry influencers. In our changing world today, it is a practice that we feel we must promote and protect. Why does Paris inspire you?

Paris is overflowing not just with history, but with an enigmatic energywe come away with an abundance of ideas whenever we are in the city. Let alone, it being the city of fashion, the home of Haute Couture and the place where many of the biggest brands found their first steps. It is the place that everyone looks to for fashion. How important the presentation of the dialogue with your audience? Would you describe a fashion show as performance?

With Haute Couture, a designer should invite his audience to escape for a while, to get lost in a dream. So, a presentation or show becomes the stage where the storytelling is comes to life. A design isn’t what it is in Haute Couture if it is not seen in motion, through an act, or the reimagination of a moment in time.

Leading Couturier Carves a Niche in Qatar’s Fashion Scene with ‘S cycle’

Q

atar’s leading couturier Samiha Jammali who has been a part of the fashion industry for over a decade as an educator and a visual creative for well-known home-grown brands, has now taken the exciting plunge into curating her very own label: ‘S cycle’ based in Doha, Qatar. Taking her philosophy from that of ‘the circle of life’ school of thought, Samiha has adapted that into the foundation of her brand: life and fashion for her is one and the same of that great big cycle. Concluding with the name of the label being fused with her starting initial of “S” and the word “Cycle”.

36

FASHION

From design concept, to sketching, to fabric manipulation, and right down to the art of stitching, Samiha ensures to showcase her extensive knowhow and design intelligence through this journey of building her own fashion empire. S cycle’s visual aesthetics as a brand, is a mood board of contemporary designs that has a mix of panache and simplicity, reflecting that of Samiha’s own personal style of being elegant, yet simple. The brands overall objective is to be a product that can be styled in many different ways, from evolving from being an abaya to that of a dress. Samiha

37

likes to experiment with colors and fabrics, and the overall silhouettes being that of key priority, hence the final outcome of the collections being timeless affordable pieces. S cycle’s Autumn/Winter 2019 Collection, ‘Harmony Cycle’ is inspired by the signature design of the Lebanese jewellery brand Maison Mirath, the Harmony Collection; a collection of stackable jewellery pieces re-imagined in an ever-growing fusion of golds, diamonds, and precious stones. Maison Mirath embodies the spirit of woman who is ‘unapologetic in her individuality, bold in her choices, and unique in her taste, the Maison Mirath woman sees her jewellery as an extension of herself.’ The jewellery designs of Maison Mirath are practical and modular yet sophisticated,

38

elegant and timeless. Every jewellery item may be worn in different ways, and occasions; and this same concept shows in Samiha’s designs – where she has presented to her clients with versatile pieces that can be adapted into various looks. Samiha has curated the ‘Harmony Cycle’ collection with perfect balance and synergy of an eclectic color palette of soft pastels, to a more modern-day fusion of flamboyant reds, greens and golds. Speaking of the ‘Harmony Cycle’ collection, and the brand generally itself, Samiha mentions, “I want everything I design to be of great value for my clients, such as quality, cost and finishing. I want my designs to be worn and styled in different ways allowing the client to be as unique as they wish to be with the way they choose to style and wear a piece from S cycle.”

Imperial-inspired amulets, topped with a dragon, come in to further capture the essence of this faraway inspiration, along with golden accessories featuring leaves and feathers that are complemented with ruby-red, blue and emerald stones, taking the form of earrings and tricircle crowns. The high heels are a combination of gold leather counters, divine velvet at the toe, and transparent, diamond-studded straps.

The collection also puts emphasis on blown-up and fan-shaped shoulders, that allude to heavenly wings. Draped sleeves and capes that descend off-the-shoulder, leading into long trains that flow to the ground, create the illusion of angelic forms. The dragon makes its protective presence felt, adding a hint of mysteriousness to the woman who bares its forms, from ornate kimono-style jackets, to imperial red and jasmine pieces in rich combinations of velvet and satin.

HENRY JACQUES

Up Close and Personal with CEO Anne-Lise Cremona

“My Main concern for Henry Jacques is longevity while keeping with the art of Perfumery”

By Leslie Fernandez

A

s the CEO and main creative force behind Parfums Henry Jacques, Anne-Lise Cremona strives to enhance an already towering legacy. After being gone for over twenty years, Anne-Lise is back, unleashing her passion for perfume to broaden the horizons of Henry Jacques without altering the company’s essence.

52

INTERVIEW

53

As we all knew, you been in the perfume industry for almost half a century, what keeps you going?

Henry Jacques is an absolutely unique perfume house, we are what I consider a “Haute Couture” perfume house and this is why. Every perfume is made by hand, in our own laboratory and atelier. We break the rules in terms of what has become normal within today’s industry of mass perfumery. On one hand, we follow and respect traditions, but on the other, we see ourselves as contemporary and visionary. Every aspect of our creative process is in tune with the French tradition of excellence and luxury, without compromise. We consider what we do as a form of art. What inspired you the most in creating perfumes out from a rarity, refinement and smell of perfection?

Henry Jacques was founded by my father many years ago, and my mother also played a great role in developing our fragrances. As a traveller, a man of taste but also a businessman, Henry threw himself entirely into perfume creation and went around the world to find the best ingredients and meet the people who could truly appreciate the treasures they were creating. Today I bring my own experience and interpretation to the brand. I preserve what has been built but I also bring my very personal and avant-garde vision. During the process of creating a unique smell, what is your olfactive memory? Do you have any?

Olfactive memory is the strongest to exist. We never know which emotion it will transport us towards. My first olfactory love, which has now become my perfume of choice, is “Janice” - I have a personal version, very warm, very French. The second is called “Datcha”; my mother wore it for a very long time. Again, I have a special version of this incredible perfume, with a bouquet that I adore to make it more personal. My mother also offered me a composition of roses when I was very young, called “Rose Suprème”. I like to wear this by itself, but also to add it on top of other perfumes. In my youth, these fragrances are ones that really impacted me and my olfactory senses, which is why they are still so dear to my heart. I now love our new Les Brumes collection that took years of development to truly make us happy, and I use Les Brumes to complement these essences. I especially love the delicious and addictive interpretations of Temporaline and Osara for instance. Your perfume is your message, your scented slogan. Is the sense of smell your only tool in creating your collections?

It is not only my sense of smell that helps in creating new scents, it is a culmination of years of experience, of our savoir-faire, and our desire to remain at the absolute pinnacle of Haute Parfumerie. As a Bespoke Perfume house first, most of our perfumes were created to fulfil the olfactory dreams of a client. Then, of course, comes our knowledge in rare and delicate natural components. Our laboratory is filled with over 1200 components, this in itself is the result of decade of research - when we create a new perfume, it is through delving into these shelves that most of the creative process is

54

done. Finally, there is an element of instinct involved, and this you cannot really explain. It comes from culture, experience and does not necessarily answer to any rules. I like the idea of improvising, of over-turning rules that have sometimes been incorporated into modern perfumery without real reason. Any influences that gives more meaning to your creations and collections?

French elegance has always been at the core of all our creations but infused with an international touch with links back to Henry Jacques love for travel. It is through travel that he discovered the finest ingredients and drew inspiration from various cultures. The essences, the components, come from what the earth gifts us. Each climate and each region offer unexpected essences that profoundly mark the memory. The search for new and beautiful components is a crucial part of our work. Creativity, in my view, is nourished by everything. It should express itself freely and knows no frontiers, geographical borders or time period. It is curious and respectful of the many differences and cultures of the world. It completely free! A free spirit! I like Henry Jacques to be a free and independent brand. How long does it take to create a fragrance? Any emotional touch/inspiration to derive one?

A new fragrance can take a week to years to develop. It is such an individual journey for each and every scent, it is hard to generalise. I am infused with codes of beautiful French “Haute Parfumerie”. I stay as far as possible from trends; I like a new perfume to open a new path rather than follow an existent one. I try to listen to my instinct in my choices. A perfume needs a certain depth, a very personal identity, whatever its orientation. Above all it needs magnificent ingredients!

already, my father founded Henry Jacques through his love of travel, and his worldly inspirations; he considers the Middle East a second home. We have many followers from Qatar, who my father has been connected with for many years. These customers visited us in France over the years, and later Harrod’s in the UK.

Of all your collections, which one is your favorite that have a sense of belongingness?

Until a few months ago, I would have simply said that Les Classiques is my favourite collection, purely because it represents the true heart of our Maison. Nevertheless, I cannot mention Les Classiques today without mentioning Les Brumes as well. Les Brumes now completes my perfume wardrobe. The collection is both unique and indispensable. My ‘recipe’ these days is Janice or Datcha with a cloud of Rose Supreme. Or a few drops of Rose Supreme with a cloud of Osara. These collections embody our achievements of a lifetime a representation of the entire diversity of the Henry Jacques universe. Last but not the least, what motivates you to open the renowned Henry Jacques in Doha?

The Middle East is a fascinating region for many and absolutely thrilling for a perfumer. In Doha, the passion for perfume is shared so spontaneously that it becomes a rare happiness and we live exceptional moments when we come here. Perfume passion makes real friendships for life, and I have many friends in Doha. Qatar has always been important to us, for many reasons. As mentioned 55

BOUCHERON

New Nature Jewellery Creations Universe

At Boucheron, nature is not docile, sensible, domesticated. It is neither

a pretext nor an anecdote. On the contrary, it is a force that penetrates the collections with freedom and authenticity. Thus, ever since Frédéric Boucheron’s first creations and still today, flowers, plants and stems have flourished, in gentleness but not fragility, with femininity but also with strength. Somewhere between realism and fantasy, the triumph of

nature emerges. And the beauty of nature is revealed. Question Mark Necklaces

More than a piece of jewelry, it is an idea. And a philosophy. Developed by Frédéric Boucheron, gone through all ages without ever getting old, the iconic Point d’Interrogation (Question Mark) beautifies women while freeing them. In fact, with this necklace, you don’t need any help to fasten it. It wraps around the neck with no questions asked.

Plume de Paon

160 years ago, a man was spellbound by a peacock feather. His name was Frédéric Boucheron. Assisted by his jewelry master, he began to work towards reproducing the delicate, ethereal beauty of a peacock feather. Since then, the peacock feather has constantly nourished the Maison’s

creativity and jewelry know-how. The new Plume de Paon creations, available in white gold, morganite and diamonds, and in pink gold and diamonds, are characterised here by their lightness and flexibility. Because the creations are so delicate, they will come to life as they follow your movements. 59

AUDEMARS PIGUET T

his autumn, Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet encourages women to re-appropriate time. Inspired by the aesthetics of 17th-century single-hand timepieces, the new Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique tells time…philosophically! This design watch is a statement of creative freedom and free-spirited individuality. In defiance of the rush and frenzy of today’s world, the Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique puts time on women’s side, its single hand defying contemporary conventions of time measurement. As François-Henry Bennahmias explains, “At Audemars Piguet, we have always charted our own course, following our firm convictions and starting our independent trends, even during times of crisis. We continue today with our new Millenary Philosophique. This watch takes a break from the rushing minutes of our world and invites you to set your own tempo.” This abstract watch has been meticulously hand-finished by our

60

watchmakers, in the highest respect of Audemars Piguet’s traditions. The 18-carat pink or white gold case presents alternating satin brushing and Frosted Gold finishing, a technique Audemars Piguet owes to Florentine jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. The diamond-dust effect it creates results from hours of meticulous micro-hammering. Adding a subtle touch of colour, the see-through caseback reveals the oscillating weight, which coloured plates recall the hand-crafted dimpled dial in shades of brown or blue. The single hour hand is polished and sand-blasted. Adding to the current hand-wound collection, this watch is equipped with a new selfwinding movement, calibre 3140. This movement is endowed with a patented mechanism which ticks the hand around the dial in an elliptical trajectory. The hour wheel directly corresponds with a transparent disc on the dial, on which the single hand is mounted. This enables the hand to follow a clear trajectory despite the elliptical case.

MESSIKA

The Lucky Move Collection With The Iconic Faces Kate Moss, Joan Smalls And Sylvia Hoeks THE NEW HEROINES

THE COLLECTION

For the newest campaign, Valerie Messika has chosen to cast three contemporary icons that break the codes of Parisian jewellery.

The collection is comprised of the Small Medallion which can be found as rings, earrings and necklaces, the Large Medallion in long necklaces and hoops, the Bubble Set with a choker, bracelet and ring, and finally the Carabiner Set which comes in a necklace, bracelet and 2-finger ring.

“I wanted to create a trio of girls, a gang that would represent women in their diversity and each of whom, whatever their age, would embody a type of beauty, says Valerie Messika about the three new Messika faces. 62

WATCHES & JEWELLERY

This collection is a way for us to reinvent the iconic Move collection. The inspiration comes from the medallions that act as lucky charms, talismans. Lucky Move jewelry can be worn in so many ways, says Valerie Messika. The diamond chokers flash incandescently with circles of yellow, pink or white gold. The XXL pendants are set on carabiner chains and illuminate

signet rings with different types of geometry. All gold on the outside and plated inside and vice versa, Lucky Move can be engraved as desired with names, dates or sweet messages on one side. Some pendants are reversible, offering a versatile and fun touch. A sexy collection whose appeal is based on the contrast between the delicate medallions and strong geometric design of the Move motif. 63

Clifton Baumatic: Masculine Elegance

T

he Clifton Baumatic combines understated elegance and technical reliability, thanks to the latest generation of the Baumatic calibre - the BM13 - certified by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute) and resistant to the magnetic fields encountered in daily life. The Clifton Baumatic is the essential companion for aesthetes with assertive tastes in perpetual pursuit of performance and innovation.

64

WATCHES & JEWELLERY

SLEEK AND CHIC LINES

A stylish must-have, the Clifton Baumatic is available in an elegant array of refined materials and colours. Its perfectly proportioned round case is made of 18-carat pink gold or polished/satin-finished steel. Its clear display is topped by an anti-glare scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal for enhanced readability. On the case back, the finely decorated movement and oscillating weight are visible through the sapphire crystal.

The pink gold model features a “warm white” porcelain-type finish dial with gilt index and hands, contrasted by a black alligator strap; while the steel version reveals a gradated blue dial on an integrated steel bracelet or black alligator leather strap.

The new models in the Clifton Baumatic Collection express Baume & Mercier’s commitment to customer expectations without compromising on quality.

SUBTLE AND ELEGANT DETAILS

The new Clifton Baumatic watches are equipped with the Baumatic BM13 calibre. This mechanical self-winding movement offers innovative features that are adapted to contemporary needs.

Whether light or dark, with a porcelain-type effect or a subtle gradation from blue to black, the dial is adorned with riveted faceted trapezoidshaped index, slim alpha hands and an oversized date aperture discreetly located at 3 o’clock. Anthracite or white, depending on the model, the minute track and the central focal point symbolising COSC certification enhance this harmonious display. The case back, attached with four screws and topped with a domed sapphire crystal, also reveals the calibre’s fine workmanship: an automatic, modern movement with carefully crafted traditional finishes - circular graining, sandblasting, snailing or even Côtes de Genève - on the plate, bridges and on the open-worked steel- or gold-toned tungsten oscillating weight. The lyre shaped like the Phi character at the heart of the movement symbolises Baume & Mercier’s balance, harmony of proportions and quest for perfection. The alligator strap with pin buckle adds a final touch of comfort and convenience, and can be easily interchanged without any tools thanks to a clever spring bar system, while the five-row bracelet in polished/ satin-finished steel is secured by a triple folding clasp with push-pieces.

QUALITY, RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE

Power reserve: 120 hours, or five days (compared to an average of 40-70 hours). This means that the watch does not have to be wound from one weekend to the next. Antimagnetism: resistance to the magnetic fields encountered in daily life - which may cause disruption or result in a movement suddenly stopping. This is an essential feature in a world where magnetic forces in phones, tablets and even the simple magnets of handbag clasps are present. Chronometric accuracy: COSC certification with a variation of -4 to +6 seconds per day (compared to 20-30 seconds usually requiring a reset to regular time). Reliability: maintenance service every seven years (compared to the standard three to five years). Clifton Baumatic adorns the wrists of fine watchmaking aficionados with style and character, without compromising on quality. 65

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS

LUDO Abstract Style And Elegant Design

T

o celebrate the timeless elegance of one of its great signatures, Van Cleef & Arpels is putting the Ludo bracelet back at center stage. Created in 1934, the design evokes a precious belt; it was baptized with the nickname of Louis Arpels, one of the Maison’s founders. Today, four brand new versions bring together different materials and gold colors to magnify the creation’s emblematic briquette and hexagon motifs. The abstract style of the 1930s is combined with the Maison’s cherished couture inspiration. Thanks to virtuoso craftsmanship from the Van Cleef & Arpels workshops, the gold takes on a light, flexible quality – studded with dazzling precious details. PURE, ELEGANT LINES

Uncluttered and refined, the Ludo collection reinterprets an iconic Van Cleef & Arpels creation dating from 1934. The Ludo bracelet is shaped like a belt; distinguished by its flexible mesh, it is punctuated by a bucklelike clasp, set with precious stones. It has renewed itself over the years in a multitude of guises, while remaining true to its original design. Today, the Maison is honoring it with its own collection, including four new versions and as many dazzling harmonies. The gold’s smooth, shiny surface is subtly interspersed with precious or hard stones, alongside a graphic interplay of lines. Just as a belt adds structure to the silhouette and accentuates a slender waist, the Ludo bracelet highlights the graceful outline of a feminine wrist. In keeping with the traditional “honeycomb” mesh, three of the new pieces feature hexagonal links adorned with a star-set precious stone at their centers. Engraved in the gold, the star-shaped motif harbors a grain-set ruby, sapphire or diamond, creating the impression of a sparkling constellation. The fourth 66

model illuminates the briquette mesh, recalling the shimmering weave of a fabric with its association of gold and diamonds. A DISTINGUISHED.. QUARTET..

Ludo bracelet Yellow gold, sapphires, turquoise, lapis lazuli, diamonds The warmth of yellow gold combines with the elegant color of sapphires, which adorn the mosaic of hexagonal motifs. On the clasp, luminous turquoise echoes deep blue lapis lazuli. These two fi ne materials have been selected with the utmost care, to enhance this daring piece. Pink Gold, Rubies, Coral, Diamonds

In a fl amboyant harmony, pink gold embellishes the intensity of rubies in “star setting” and coral, which adorns the clasp. On the latter, two sparkling rows of diamonds underline the orangey-red motifs. The vibrant blend of shades instills the piece with elegance and character. White Gold, Onyx, Diamonds

On this piece, a contrasting palette of white gold, diamonds and onyx enhances the Ludo bracelet’s graphic lines. The shiny, deep black color of onyx highlights the sparkling purity of the diamonds that stud the piece, accentuating its timeless allure. Yellow Gold, White Gold, Diamonds

With elegant simplicity, this composition blends diamonds with two colors of gold to reinterpret the couture theme. The bracelet is distinguished by a briquette-shaped mesh, which endows the ribbon of yellow gold with very fi ne articulation. The impression of fl exible fabric is emphasized by the clasp – resembling a belt loop – and the arrowshaped point at the bracelet’s tip. Hemmed with round diamonds, it has a fl uid drape that gracefully enlaces the wrist.

AUDEMARS PIGUET S

wiss Haute Horlogerie Manufacture Audemars Piguet presents a new Millenary timepiece, the Millenary Frosted Gold Aventurine. The innovative model underlines the creativity of the Millenary collection with a deep blue aventurine dial and seconds counter that recall a star-lit sky. Aventurine glass was created in the 17th century thanks to a chance manipulation (“all’avventura”) in a Murano glass factory when copper filings were dropped into cooling molten glass, creating a constellation of sparkling particles. Today, this glass is obtained by introducing black copper oxide and cobalt, which colours the glass in blue. This hint of outer space is contained by the 18-carat white gold case finished with Frosted Gold on the case sides, bezel, inner bezel and lugs – a technique that Audemars Piguet owes to

jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. The watch is complemented by a hand-made and hand-polished 18-carat white gold Polish mesh bracelet which adds a vintage touch, while dressing the wrist like a second skin. The Millenary Frosted Gold Aventurine is equipped with a handwound Manufacture movement, calibre 5201, which perfectly integrates the elliptical case. The construction of the escapement has been reversed to match the watch’s asymmetric style. The beating heart – balance wheel, escapement and lever – usually hidden on the caseback side, is now revealed through the partially open dial.
