WELCOME DEAR GUESTS OF INCONTRI #6, We are happy to welcome you atop the Renon Plateau. The very first mountain inn was established up here around the year 1200. In order to reach this elevation of 1,200 meters, many of you probably rode the world's longest one-track cableway, which is about four kilometers or 2.5 miles in length. You can see that you're in a place where tradition and modernity are brought together in a harmonious way. Can we say the same about our industry today? Disruption has never been more intense since the invention of television. Countless digital business models involving audiovisual content that didn't exist a couple of years ago are currently challenging the industry’s traditional players. Should we take the likes of Reed Hastings and Jeff Bezos literally in assuming that linear TV will soon be wiped out, and that consumption of films will be on demand rather than at a place called the cinema? "The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed," is what William Gibson, the famous writer who coined the term cyberspace, stated in the early 1990s. The quote couldn't be truer today. While House of Cards and Transparent evoke global storms of enthusiasm, Der Bergdoktor and Un posto al sole still draw in millions of viewers. While cord-cutters and cord-nevers propel the rise of OTT services, their most coveted series creators love to reference their storytelling to good old novels. Chances are that producers don't need to jettison everything they've done and learned so far. Some basic virtues shall remain. Sooner or later those virtues must, however, be implemented into a new framework, applied to a new grammar and

located where tomorrow's consumers are. That takes effort, commitment and guts. It's INCONTRI's mission to help you along in taking the next step on this path. We want to spark an intense dialogue between forward-thinking producers and top executives of digital, on-demand platforms. We want to inspire you by means of enlightening keynote talks and exciting current case studies. We want to examine how cinema, television and VoD are becoming more and more intertwined, defining tomorrow's content production industry. Which new forms of storytelling, which new kinds of partnerships and production models will evolve? Which are the opportunities that digital platforms can offer both larger and smaller production houses? How do traditional funding partners such as broadcasters or sponsors keep up with the digitization of the industry? What types of content are global players such as Netflix or Sky seeking? What will be the future potential of web and TV series? In this process, we think of INCONTRI as a sort of drive belt. It's up to you to turn the wheel and hit the accelerator. We've conceived INCONTRI as a high-level think-tank event for you to engage in the conversation and to enrich the outcome with your own experience, your own thoughts and questions. This is reflected in our slogan: Four countries. Two languages. One summit. We encourage you to allow INCONTRI and South Tyrol's mountain air to refresh your mind.

Program Coordinator INCONTRI #6

GREETING DEAR INCONTRI #6 PARTICIPANTS, For the sixth time now, producers and representatives of film, television, funding bodies, distribution and VoD mainly from Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland are meeting in South Tyrol at this international film conference for the purpose of exchanging multinational dialogue. This year, however, it is not Business Location Südtirol (BLS) that has invited you to this meeting, but rather IDM Südtirol. Since the first of January BLS has formed part of this new organization, which unites the four companies that had previously worked separately in support of various sectors of South Tyrol’s economy. But even though our name has changed, what has remained exactly the same is the enthusiasm and conviction with which we, though now called IDM, continue to actively spur on South Tyrol’s development as a film location. Of course the numerous initiatives that have always helped us further our mandate will likewise continue, ranging from our tried-and-true programs such as INCONTRI and RACCONTI for the development of series concepts all the way to brand new initiatives such as FINAL TOUCH and RACCONTI Local Plus. Since the creation of the film-funding program, a new economic sector has established itself in South Tyrol and is now thriving. Numbers clearly evince this: at this point in time, around 500 service providers and film professionals are working in the sector, striking confirmation that South Tyrol’s film and creative industries are rapidly growing. A total of 148 film projects have received funding, for which a total of 550 shooting days have taken place here. Last year some prestigious projects filmed in South Tyrol, including the family comedy Burg Schreckenstein by Ralf Huettner and the drama La Corrispondenza (Correspondence) by Giuseppe Tornatore, with Jeremy Irons and Olga Kurylenko in the lead roles. Meanwhile young local director Matthias Lang and his team found wonderful locations around Bolzano,

Appiano, Sand in Taufers and the Sella Pass for their fantasy fairytale, König Laurin, and South Tyrolean craftsman reproduced a medieval village on the Latemar Massif for Monte (Mountain), Iranian director and screenwriter Amir Naderi’s latest film. In 2015, we were especially pleased to witness the success of several movies that were filmed in South Tyrol and supported by our film fund: Everest, directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke and Josh Brolin, opened the Venice Film Festival; Oliver Hirschbiegel’s drama, Elser, about the would-be Hitler assassin Georg Elser, was nominated for seven categories of the Deutscher Filmpreis; the Swiss feature Chrieg won the Max Ophüls Prize in two main categories; Vergine Giurata, the directorial debut of Laura Bispuri, was selected for numerous festivals throughout the world; and the children's book adaptation Maikäfer flieg!, by Mirjam Unger, opening this year's Diagonale in Graz. During these days, the 30th Bolzano Film Festival Bozen, into which the INCONTRI Film Conference is integrated, brings European auteur cinema to Bolzano. Among the approximately 80 films that will flicker across the big screen, six films had received financial support from South Tyrol’s film fund; these will be shown in the Made in Südtirol Alto Adige series. Amongst these is the film that will open the festival: Fräulein, which originated in South Tyrol and was subsequently filmed here as well. The idea for this comedy, by Caterina Carone, came out of the first RACCONTI Script Lab. Now we hope that you will experience inspiring encounters and fruitful exchanges with colleagues during the course of INCONTRI #6.

THE BRIGHT FUTURE OF ON-DEMAND PROGRAMMING – AND WHAT EUROPE'S PRODUCERS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO IT

Keynote talk with Brian Pearson, Director of Local Originals, Netflix Netflix has recently announced the "birth of a global television network". Operating in 190 countries, the former DVD rental company has become the epitome of subscription video on demand (SVoD). 2016 will see Netflix’ biggest output of original content so far with 31 seasons of new or returning series, two dozen movies and documentaries and 30 children’s series. With Cattleya’s Suburra, Federation Entertainment’s Marseille, Left Bank Pictures’ The Crown or Wiedemann & Berg’s Dark, local European productions are becoming more and more important for the global streamer. As director of local originals, Brian Pearson looks after new projects for EMEA and Asia. In a conversation with Torsten Zarges (Zarges ctc), he will talk about what it means to push the VoD landscape forward, which constellations and partnerships Netflix is looking for in Europe and which requirements high-quality content should meet in order to catch his interest.

CINEMA GOES SERIAL: SUBURRA

Case study with Marco Chimenz, CEO of Cattleya The first commission of an Italian Netflix original series came even sooner than Netflix' official launch in Italy. Suburra will premiere worldwide on Netflix while RAI will air the series after the debut on Netflix in Italy. As Italy´s leading independent film and television producer, the Rome-based Cattleya has produced over 60 feature films, including several high-profile pictures in English for worldwide releases, and a dozen television series. Using the example of Suburra, Marco Chimenz will talk about the steps from cinema to series, the cooperation with SVoD and public television, the international attraction of local Italian stories and about how this fits in Cattleya’s company strategy. Matthijs Wouter Knol (EFM) will host the conversation. 10:30 – 11:00

PREMIUM CONTENT ACROSS THE CONTINENT – THE PAN-EUROPEAN SKY EXPERIENCE

Keynote talk with Nils Hartmann, Director of Original Productions, Sky Italia and Marcus Ammon, Senior Vice President Film, Sky Deutschland Sky Italia is the first media company in Italy operating on different broadcasting platforms with different business models and a 4.7-million-subscriber base. With 4.5 million customers Sky Deutschland is the pay-TV market leader in Germany and Austria. Both are part of Sky plc, Europe’s leading entertainment group. Sky's exclusive programs are broadcast to 21.5 million customers in five countries, who watch them whenever and wherever they want. In a conversation with Matthijs Wouter Knol, Nils Hartmann and Marcus Ammon will talk about their strategies in regard to their national and international productions, the cooperation within the Sky Group as well as the challenge to co-produce series with prominent film directors, either as international co-productions or with new partners, as exemplified by The Young Pope and Berlin Babylon. The talk will be followed by two recent and intriguing case studies from Sky, which illustrate the potential of partnerships between Pay TV and cinema producers.

SEX, CRIME AND HORROR IN THE WOODS – CINEMA MEETS VOD

With Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of One More Pictures and Jakob D. Weydemann, Producer & Founder of Weydemann Bros. Producer Manuela Cacciamani will talk about working as independent production company with Italy's largest Pay TV company. Case Study Sex & Crime Emerging talents need their platforms. The dark comedy Sex & Crime is director Paul Florian Müller's feature debut, produced by Berlin- and Cologne-based Weydemann Bros. in cooperation with Sky Deutschland. The Pay-TV network supported the project from the get-go; it was also supported by public film funding and recently released in cinema. After its theatrical run, Sex & Crime will air on Sky. In this case study, producer Jakob Weydemann will explain how they came together with Sky, how their cooperation works and what it means to bring conventional and new players in line. 12:30 – 14:00

A FORCE OF ITS OWN: INSIDE THE DRIVING POWER OF SUPERFILM

Conversation with John Lueftner, Co-Founder & Managing Director, Superfilm It takes some guts to call your company Superfilm, but John Lueftner and David Schalko have proven their choice justified all along the way by an output of ambitious, edgy films and television series which apparently can only come from them. The likes of Braunschlag, Aufschneider – Carve the Joint or Altes Geld – Old Money have created massive waves way beyond the Austrian market, not least on VoD platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Sky Go. How has Superfilm implemented its magic formula, enabling it to rise in international esteem with such locally rooted content? John Lueftner talks with Torsten Zarges about the company’s strategy of developing, financing, producing and distributing a very unique kind of product.

NEUESUPER started out with a feature film background, but suddenly finds itself in the middle of a huge content demand regarding innovative serialized formats by TV stations and platforms. I see INCONTRI as a platform to reach out to new national and international partners financing-, production- and especially creative-wise. I believe that creating successful film and TV content in Germany increasingly becomes a European undertaking and that strong and long-lasting partnerships will be needed even more in the future. As our subsidiary company KAZOU produces apps, games and animation I am also highly interested in new storytelling formats like Transmedia and Virtual Reality.
