OUR HISTORY 1988

TALK

At that time, Blue Tomato founder Gerfried Schuller was already a revolutionary of his time. In 1988 he was crowned European Champion and also added six Austrian championship titles to his name. During his racing days, he found himself alongside snowboarding legends such as Peter Bauer, Shaun Palmer, Jeff Brushie and Craig Kelly. As a Burton team rider, Gerfried even surfed pow with Jake Burton from time to time. Gerfried’s passion for boardsports was the foundation on which the Blue Tomato Snowboard School was founded in 1988. The school quickly grew to be the largest snowboard school in Austria at that time and was the start for a true success story that continues to this day.

BUYER'S GUIDE SURFSKATE How does a surfskate work? The added part under the front truck moves laterally and rotates around a spring-loaded axle or

special bushings. When you lean to one side, the spring relaxes and tightens again to reach its initial

position. This gives the effect of rebounding you into the next turn, just like surfing but on asphalt.

How to choose my setup: what to look out for with a surfskate? Trucks and wheels:

Surfskate carving trucks:

To ride smoothly and quickly, a longer board (34" to 40") will be more stable: just like surfing a longboard. For even more radical turns, you'll need a shorter board (28" to 33"): just like surfing a shortboard.

It is always better to have high and wide trucks (longboard/cruiser trucks) for better traction and soft wheels (78A to 83A) to ride on any kind of ground, even less than perfect roads.

All our surfskates already have trucks and wheels on the board. Carver and Yow have their own trucks on their boards and Globe boards come with trucks from Revenge. They‘re all slightly different but ultimately have a similar feeling.

BALANCE BOARD TRICKS No Waves – No Problem We want to show you a few tricks that you can also practise on dry land on your balance board:

1 - Starting position

4 - The “One-Footer”

Stand with both legs on your balance board and try to find your balance. Made it? Now we can start with the trick training.

Shift your centre of gravity over the roll, trying to clasp the end of the board with your toes.

If you are good at the barrel trick, try to straighten one leg in a squat position and touch your toes with your fingers.

2 - The Barrel

If you have mastered this trick, try and lift one leg ;)

5 - The 50-50

As the name suggests, with this trick you try to take the position like when riding a barrel. Bend your knees and turn your body 90°.

Stand in the starting position and turn 90° with the board in one swing. 3 - 2 - 1, go!

BUYERʹS GUIDE SURFBOARDS Which is the right size surfboard for me? The surfboard size is in feet and inches. Length, width and thickness give the volume in litres. The volume determines how much uplift your board has, so it is the most crucial factor when buying a surfboard. For beginners, the more volume, the better. High volume surfboards are more stable and make it easier for you to takeoff. More volume also means easier paddling. As you advance, you should try boards with less volume. They are more agile and better for faster turns.

BUYER'S GUIDE SOFTBOARDS What are soft top surfboards? As the name suggests: they are soft. They have a soft top, which sets them apart from traditional ”hard“ surfboards.

What makes soft top surfboards special? They have a foam core, just like traditional surfboards - the difference is in the soft upper layer. The deck (top) and rails (long sides) are covered with soft polyethylene foam and the bottom is reinforced with plastic. The soft upper layer offers many advantages. The boards are robust and durable, so great for travelling. The softer foam also protects you against injuries and floats better.

More buoyancy = more fun

This extra buoyancy makes soft tops easier to paddle so they are caught faster by waves. This means you catch more waves and have more fun, even

when the conditions are not that good. Due to their great characteristics, the softies were mainly recommended to beginners. In the meantime, however, the colourful boards have become so popular that we see them used by surfers of all skill levels at all surf beaches.

Performance soft tops Because they are so much fun, more and more brands offer special performance models for advanced surfers. They come in a wide range of shapes and variations, which means that more and more ”hard“ surfers are softening up and switching to soft tops.

Usually, many people connect surfing with never-ending paddling and duck dives through the white water to reach the line-up as well as the omnipresent washing machine. Gladly, you can forget about all these things when you go riversurfing! Even if the two sports are similar in many ways, there are big differences between them. For example, especially for beginners, it is already relatively easy to stand on both feet and try out turns when they are trying out riversurfing for the first time. INTERVIEW WITH BLUE TOMATO CEO ADAM ELLIS Adam Ellis has been CEO of Blue Tomato for 5 years now - the perfect opportunity to recap our time together and have a look into the crystal ball of the future.

Hi ADAM, You moved with your family from Seattle (USA) to Schladming (AT) 5 years ago and became Blue Tomato‘s CEO. Looking back, is there anything that particularly fascinated or surprised you about Europe?

Fascinating for sure…life is a journey that is best lived by experiencing every moment, celebrating the differences that pop up. The cultural differences across Europe have been a joy to experience. I love it when things are different and the homogeneity of life is disrupted. Getting to raise my kids with a global mindset has been awesome, struggling to learn a language, being a cultural outsider on the inside…it’s all been pretty cool.

You‘ve been the CEO of Blue Tomato for 5 years now. Would you say Blue Tomato has changed a lot in that time? My first trip to Europe and personal experience with Blue Tomato was shortly after the partnership with Zumiez started 10 years ago. I will never forget meeting Tillmann “Tilly” Ruprecht (Director of Sales & Service) at one of the Munich shops and introducing myself in terrible German. The Munich shops were the 4th and 5th shops and today we have over 70 shops in six countries and more than 800 colleagues, so clearly a lot has changed. In the last years, we have created opportunities for a lot of people to work at Blue Tomato and for those that were here at the time to work in new ways and to grow and learn new things. In fact, the founder Gerfried Schuller continued to lead

the business until 2017 and the core team that worked for Gerfried are still here today. Across the company there are plenty of people who have been here over 10 years. Back then, both Blue Tomato and Zumiez set out to find the perfect business partner and in the end there couldn‘t have been a better match. Typically, with a new partner you would see systems change, brand change and people change – none of that happened at Blue Tomato. Blue Tomato always was a great brand and we have remained a great brand with great people. Together we were able to take the business to a new level, for instance we are bringing brands and exclusive products to Europe that only have been available in the US. In that way we build compelling product

Consumers expect the shopping experience to be local and will hold companies to account for their values and how they exercise their values. Blue Tomato has always worked to do the right things, give back and be a good employer. We will further work on our Corporate Citizenship initiative to find a more structured approach to Corporate Social Responsibility. Also we will make sure to focus on “Work of the Future” for our employees. As we continue to grow we have a big opportunity to create more impact and good in the world. I am excited to do all of this and hopefully have a ton of fun in the process.

Of course also the consumer we serve has changed over the past 10 years, the world has changed, and Blue Tomato has evolved. I don’t ever think one era is better than the other, instead I tend to focus on remaining true to who we are culturally and what we are about from a brand perspective – no matter what challenges and changes we face.

What does the future hold for Blue Tomato? I am really excited about the future. I think we are doing great things for our customers and will do our best to further improve the shopping experience. Blue Tomato has always had a pan-European business and great internationalisation by localising things like language, payment methods, assortments and events. By expanding our offers, services and events in the various countries and cities, we want to connect more to our customers and the community. We are convinced that human-tohuman connection is a huge part of powerful retail experiences. Our continued expansion is intended to create opportunities for people to live their passions, whether as customers or colleagues.

A look behind the scenes with HR SPECIALIST BERND STUPPACHER Bernd Stuppacher is an HR Specialist at Blue Tomato. The gentle giant (Bernd is like 2.10 m tall) with the Viennese charm not only regularly enlarges our email inboxes, but also our horizons - no matter whether it‘s about our development, Blue Tomato knowledge and information or Marvel quotes.

With more than 850 colleagues, over 70 shops in six countries and our online shop, there is a lot to do. The spectrum ranges from marketing, IT support, customer service, recruiting, software development, buying, logistics and finance to the management of our shops. But we never forget the people behind all the work. Freeriding mums & dads, surfing and travel-loving singles, yoga-loving grannies & grandpas or trend-conscious students. We want to support and accompany these people in their different phases of life in the best possible way. This can be a longer break

In this context we have launched the Knowledge Days. These are digital events where we educate ourselves on important topics. We offer ”classic“ content such as stress management during Corona, resilience, mental health, team leadership or personal and professional development, but also inspiring topics such as ”Curiosity and its influence on success or failure in the company“. Unfortunately, life doesn‘t always consist of perfect powder days and deserted line-ups. That‘s why we also support our employees in difficult times. For this purpose, we have set up

our ”Tribe Fund“ - a non-profit association that supports them financially in times of crisis. In addition, our staff can access free digital psychological support at any time. Why are we doing all this? We believe in empowerment. We believe that people want to shape their own work, implement their own ideas and break new ground. We provide them with all the tools they need to do this - whether it‘s for their professional or personal development. We are therefore a community of people who pursue their passions and treat each other with respect and as equals. We do this in the office, on the mountain, on the board and also at our joint get-togethers - may they soon take place again!

THAT WAS THE BEST FOOT FORWARD TOUR 2021 Last year, an incredible 10 Best Foot Forward tour stops took place in 6 European countries. Over 500 enthusiastic skateboarders from 21 different nations took part to secure a place in the Best Foot Forward Europe finals. Finals Innsbruck 01.10. - 02.10.2021 The supporting programme began with a welcome dinner as well as a photo and video session at the legendary Landhausplatz. To guarantee a perfect warm-up before the finals, there was a unique miniramp night session at the Marktplatz on Friday evening. In addition to unique photos, there was also € 1,000 to be won at Cash4Tricks. On 02.10.2021, the biggest European AM Skate Contest Tour culminated in the Grande Finale in Innsbruck. 42 skaters (including 11 female skaters) battled it out in the Innsbruck skate hall for the title, the prize money of € 4,500 and a unique chance to win a trip to California, USA, sponsored by STS Skate. A skateboard deck is more than just a piece of pressed wood. Width, concave and other details make it special. If you want to build your own skateboard or get a complete, we’ve got the info for you.

Convenience and value – a complete skateboard When you start skating you should consider getting a complete skateboard. They come ready to shred out of the box - no adjustment needed. A complete setup is easier on the wallet and is a hassle-free introduction to skating for beginners.

Freedom to choose – self-assembled skateboard When you create your board from scratch, you have the freedom to choose every component to suit your needs. You start with the deck of the right width for your body, then pair it with trucks, wheels, bearings, griptape and hardware that suit your style.

Which size deck for me?

When you look for a skateboard deck, width is the most important factor.

It is measured in inches and always appears in the product name and on the board. The right size depends on your height, your shoe size and what terrain you want to ride. Generally, the taller you are, the wider your deck.

Deck widths: up to 7.75“ - ideal for kids between 7.75” and 8.25” – ideal for street skating and skateparks between 8.25” and 8.5” - Good allrounder skateboards over 8.5” – ideal for halfpipe, pool and cruising

Which skateboard concave is the best for me? If you look at a deck from the front, you can see a curve between the edges - this is the concave of the board. It affects how your feet press on the deck when doing tricks.

Medium concave – versatile for all kinds of riding

High concave – great for flip tricks

Which trucks? Skateboard trucks differ in their width and height. The truck width should match the deck width. The truck height depends on the size of the wheels.

Truck heights: Low trucks – for 50 to 53 mm wheels Mid trucks - for 53 to 56 mm wheels High trucks - for bigger wheels

Which skateboard wheels? The wheel size is their diameter - given in millimetres. We have wheels from 48 to 60 mm diameter. Larger wheels will be able to go faster but will take longer to accelerate. Smaller wheels accelerate faster and offer more stability.

How to apply griptape to your skateboard? In five easy steps we’ll explain how to apply your griptape to your deck. If you do it right, it will be bubble-free and have a clean edge the whole way round.

You need: • • • •

Skateboard deck Griptape Skate tool or screwdriver Box cutter or other sharp knife

1. Apply the griptape Rest your clean, dry skateboard deck on a sturdy, flat surface. Remove the protective backing from the griptape and keep it centred over your deck. Make sure to leave about 1 cm excess material either side of the deck. Now, slowly but firmly press the tape down, starting from one side to the other, with one hand. With this method you can avoid air bubbles. If you do still have little air bubbles, you can try to push them over the edge of the deck. If that doesn’t work, you can pierce the bubbles with the box cutter.

2. Mark the edges

3. Trim the griptape to fit

Clearly marking the edges will make it much easier to cleanly cut them later. To do this, take your skate tool or screwdriver and rub all the way along the edge of your deck. On the tape you’ll now see a clear white line all the way around the deck.

Cut the excess tape off the deck with a box cutter along the mark. Hold the deck securely, just to be safe.

4. Sand the edges Take the offcuts from the griptape and sand over the freshly cut edge. This ensures that no material sticks out and it won’t peel off in the future.

5. Punch holes for the screws Finally, you need to punch the holes through the griptape to mount your trucks. Push the screws from the trucks through the griptape and cut away the excess material. Now you can mount your trucks and wheels to you new deck and start skating.

How to clean your skateboard bearings We explain how to quickly clean your bearings in 10 steps. They perform better and last longer when clean. Skateboard bearings run best when they are free of grit and dirt. When skateboarding, they get dirty, which affects their performance and increases wear. To make sure they last a long time and stay in top condition, clean them regularly. We show you how to do it. You are not sure if your bearings need cleaning? Do the hearing test: Spin the wheels fast and listen to the sound. Clean bearings run quietly, dirty ones grate because of the grit inside.

10 steps to clean skateboard bearings: 1. Remove the wheels with a skate tool. Be careful not to lose the washers. 2. Wipe your wheels, trucks and bearings with a dry cloth to remove all dirt from the outside.

3. Use the truck axle as a lever to push the bearings out of the wheels. Wheels have two bearings on each side, separated by a spacer. 4. Take off the shields with a small flathead screwdriver. Then you should see the balls in the retainer.

9. Put the bearing shields back on to protect the inside from dirt. 10. Now the bearings and spacers can be inserted back into the wheels and the wheels back on the trucks.

5. Wash the bearings with benzine (or similar) in a solvent-resistant container or use the Bones Bearings Cleaning Unit. Shake the container and let it sit for a while. 6. After the dirt has come off, you can take the bearings out of the container again. Let them dry completely. 7. Check if they are clean: Hold the inner race, spin the outer race and do the hearing test. 8. Lubricate the inside with grease or Speed Cream to make them run smoothly and reduce wear.

Don‘t forget: If your bearings get wet, dry them quickly. Rust can build up quickly which will damage them.

We recommend a complete skateboard: All parts are harmonised and the board is ready to go, no adjustment needed. These classic skateboards are designed for tricks in the skate park.
