WELCOME TO EASTER 2015 GLOBAL racing has regular peaks and troughs and what a stimulating and unforgettable period the years 2010–2011 were around the world. Black Caviar and Frankel stretched their unbeaten race records with 12 Gr.1 wins between them in this period, and in Australia we saw what was arguably the finest collection of multiple Gr.1 winners since the Octagonal and Saintly era in the mid90s and the Kingston Town, Manikato days of the early 80s. At the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter yearling sale we will see one of the most exciting groupings of first season sires in many a year. You only have to think back to their race records, particularly in that two-year window to know this group will dominate the sires’ tables both here and overseas for many decades to come. In that 24 months So You Think (32 catalogued) won seven of his 10 Gr.1 trophies. Sepoy (18) dominated the two year-old ranks with rare wins in the Blue Diamond Stakes and the world’s richest race for two yearolds, the Golden Slipper. His stable mate, the enigmatic Helmet (five), dominated the rest of the Sydney Two

Year-Old Triple Crown with success in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and the ATC Champagne Stakes, and Toorak Toff (two) thrilled racegoers in Sydney and Melbourne winning the Golden Rose and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. Smart Missile (25) was one of the fastest two year-olds of his year and unlucky not to get the chance to prove it in the Golden Slipper. Foxwedge (33), himself a $925,000 Easter graduate, competed against the best at two and three before going on to achieve his Gr.1 success at four. Just imagine how the offspring of these stars are going to excite another generation of the racing public in years to come. Then there are the international champions who excited the northern hemisphere during those two years and who are having their first southern yearlings sold this Easter. Combined, these overseas newbies are the winners of 21 Gr.1 races in the northern hemisphere. Dream Ahead (eight catalogued) was victorious in the prestigious July Cup at Newmarket and in the Haydock Sprint Cup, but is probably best remembered for his dynamic victory

over champion mare Goldikova in the Prix De La Foret in France. Cape Blanco (two) won five Gr.1, Pour Moi (one) is an English Derby winner and Gio Ponti (four) won three Gr.1 in 2010-2011 to go with the two he’d notched up in previous years. What an era, and what a thrill it will be to see the first foals of these stallions gracing the Newmarket sales ring in Sydney from April 7-9. We can’t forget the tried and true. Redoute’s Choice, a champion sire who still dominates the sales ring and is father of the “world’s best sprinter” Lankan Rupee, will have 35 sons and daughters up for auction. His phenomenal sire-son Snitzel has 47 representatives, while the stallion everyone wants a piece of, Fastnet Rock, will have 57 choice offerings. Other stallions with big numbers include Sebring (33) and More Than Ready (30), while there will be 28 of the final Northern Meteor yearlings, not forgetting Exceed and Excel (20), Street Cry (20), Commands (18) High Chaparral and Stratum (15 each), and Lonhro with 13 to be sold. He is by recently deceased English Derby-Gr.1 winner High Chaparral (IRE) (Sadler’s Wells-Kasora by Darshaan) whose 61 stakes winners also include Australasian champion Dundeel (now at Arrowfield), Shoot Out and Monaco Consul, while his dam, the Gr.2 winner Triassic is a daughter of the Nijinsky horse Tights (USA). While it’s hard to single out yearlings from such a spectacular draft, the colt (Lot 395), the second foal from Champion Three Year-Old Filly and dual Gr.1 winner Faint Perfume (Shamardal (USA));

the colt (Lot 119) from wonderful broodmare Professionelle (Centaine), dam of stakes winners Sportsman, Prisoner of Love, Hoystar and King of Prussia; the filly (Lot 172) from dual Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Shania Dane (Danehill (USA)) and the colt (Lot 345) from Listed winner Crevette (Danehill)), dam already of Gr.1 winner Cosmic Endeavour, are sure to generate huge interest. With the most yearlings catalogued, Newgate Farm’s brilliant sprinter and reverse shuttler Foxwedge has been given every chance to succeed by Henry Field and his team. He won five races from 1100-1200m and his stakes placed dam is by a son of breed shaper Storm Cat. Again it’s hard to single out youngsters from his draft, but those looking for a speed machine could well be inspecting Lot 142 as this bay colt is from the Gr.1 winner Rostova (Testa Rossa); then there’s the filly from Gr.3 winner Procrastinate (Jade Hunter (USA)), dam of the South African champ Laisserfaire (Danehill), her stakeswinning brother and sire Foreplay and their stakeswinning threequarter siblings A Time For Julia and Time Thief (both by Redoute’s Choice); or there is the filly (Lot 360) from Gr.2 winner De Lago Mist (Encosta de Lago), dam already of stakes winner Instinction (Exceed and Excel). Arrowfield has also supported its young star Smart Missile, a Gr.2-winning juvenile and Gr.1 placed at three. He won three races from 1000m-1200m including the Breeders’ Plate-LR, a sure sign of precocity. This fellow’s US-bred dam is by a son of Red Ransom (so more speed there) and has also produced stakes winners Kiss From a Rose (Encosta de Lago) and Surge Ahead (Danehill Dancer (IRE)) and she’s a half-sister to Gr.1 winner and ill-fated young sire Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago) whose final crop yearlings will be offered at Easter (28 catalogued). The filly (Lot 69) from My Amelia (Redoute’s Choice), whose first foal Lightning Striker is a recent two year-old winner, and whose dam is Gr.1 winner Carry on Cutie; the filly (Lot 226) from Newcastle Newmarket-Gr.3 winner Techniques (Palace Music (USA)), dam of Black Opal-LR winner You’re Canny; the colt (Lot 299 from Kewney Stakes-Gr.2 winner Ballet Society (Stravinsky (USA) and I Am Invincible’s halfbrother (Lot 523) from Cannarelle (Canny Lad) should all have plenty of fans.

With their champion sire Fastnet Rock the most expensive sire at stud in Australia (on a reputed $200,000 fee), he has a massive draft of 57 at Easter, buyers with more modest budgets could do well to consider youngsters by first crop sons Foxwedge and Smart Missile. Those getting in on the “ground floor” and buying these yearlings could snap up a real bargain. Triple Gr.1 winner Helmet represents another branch of the Danehill line via another sire champion in Exceed and Excel (Danehill-Patrona by Lomond), who stands at $110,00 at Darley, home also of his young son. Helmet, whose imported dam is from the Sadler’s Wells line and has also produced Gr.1 winner Epaulette (Commands) and Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Bullbars (Elusive Quality), was a very good two year-old indeed winning the ATC Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 and ATC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 and he trained on to win the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 at three. His yearlings at Easter include Lot 205, a chestnut colt from US bred Star on High (Fusaichi Pegasus),

This colt traces to wonderful broodmare Best in Show via her Kentucky Oaks-winning daughter Blush With Pride. Lot 269 is another Chestnut colt, this time from the Zeditave mare Alborada, dam already of stakes winner Exelorada (by Exceed and Excel) and tracing to another influential broodmare in Miss Holborn. The once dominant Star Kingdom male line has a new representative with yearlings in 2005 in the shape of the Rupert Clarke Stakes-Gr.1 and Golden Rose-Gr.1 winner Toorak Toff whose great-great grandsire is Bletchingly (by Biscay, by Star Kingdom) and whose second dam, the Gr.2 winner Blixen, is by Mighty Avalanche (by Kaoru Star, by Star Kingdom). A son of the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 winner Show a Heart, both of Toorak Toff’s Easter offering are from imported mares. Lot 16, a bay colt, is from Lady’s Light (USA) (Tolighttoquit), dam already of South African Gr.1 winner Alboran Sea; while Lot 40 is a chestnut filly from Meet My Sis (Prized), dam of five winners including Group winners Schilling and Estonian Princess. Golden Slipper winners have a record par excellence at stud and expectations are high that Sepoy will follow in the footsteps of recent winners like Sebring and Stratum and other successful sires such as Flying Spur, Danzero and back to Canny Lad, Star Watch, Marauding, Rory’s Jester, Marscay, Luskin Star, Baguette, Vain and the first winner Todman in 1957. Sepoy represents the Mr. Prospector male line, while his dam is by Danehill from a daughter of Marscay, so it’s little wonder he was blessed with brilliant speed at two, winning the Slipper and Blue Diamond-Gr.1 and then training on to collect the Coolmore (Ascot Vale) Stakes-Gr.1 and Manikato Stakes-Gr.1 among 10 wins in 14 starts. His Easter draft is a strong one and includes a colt (Lot 283) from Gr.1 winner and stakes producer Ancient Song (Canny Lad); a colt (329) from dual Gr.1 winner and stakes producer Champagne (NZ) (Zabeel); a filly (Lot 24), bred 3fx3m to Danehill, from Gr.3 winner Leone Chiara (Lion Hunter), dam already of dual Gr.1 winner and sire Star Witness and Gr.3 winner Nostradamus and a filly (Lot 262) from Gr.3 winner Absolutelyfabulous (Langfuhr (CAN)). The imported first crop sires also boast outstanding race records, Dream Ahead (USA) was rated Champion Sprinter in Europe and was also a

co-champion at two when he won the Middle Park Stakes-Gr.1. The Emirates Park shuttler won four additional Gr.1 events including the July Cup, Haydock Sprint Cup and Prix de la Foret (beating Goldikova) and his yearling draft includes a smashing colt (Lot 85), the first foal of Gr.1 winner Ofcourseican (Mossman). This colt’s second and third dams are by Golden Slipper winners Canny Lad and Marauding. The seven times Gr.1 winner Gio Ponti (USA) collected more than $6m in earnings and was Champion Older Male in the US in 2009 and Champion Turf Male in 2009 and 2010 with wins including the Manhattan Handicap-Gr.1 and Man o’War Stakes-Gr.1 (twice). Shuttling to Arrowfield for just one season this grandson of Storm Cat has a colt (Lot 306) from Belle Giselle (Redoute’s Choice) among his Easter offerings. Already dam of Gr.2 winner Messene, Belle Giselle is from the family of champion sire Zabeel and Golden Rose-Gr.1 winner Hallowed Crown. International buyers fall in love at Inglis Easter

THE Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale has a long history as the premium yearling sale in the southern hemisphere. In more modern times the sale has become highly regarded around the world as a source for some of the most successful stock internationally. The 2014 sale saw 10 different countries in addition to Australia represented on a buying bench consisting of more than 100 individual purchasers. They bought horses both for export and to race under their respective banners in Australia. Partly responsible for the rise in international influence in the Australian market is the fall in the Australian dollar compared to overseas currencies. Buyers from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, South Africa, Singapore, Ireland, United Arab Emirates and more recently American interests are taking greater notice of the Australian market and are attracted to the fact they can get more bang for their buck down under. Owners in Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau in particular are attracted to buying youngsters in Australia due to their primary focus on sprinter-milers and their ability to make use

of world class breaking and pretraining facilities before their purchases are exported. The China Horse Club, although a relatively new initiative, is fast becoming a big player on the international racing scene and has had success with one of its first purchases in 2013 from the Easter sale, Zululand who took out the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.2 as a two year-old. With the establishment of world class facilities in Tianjin and expanding stables around the world, the China Horse Club is becoming one of the leading investors at premium sales in Australia and abroad. Angus Gold is in charge of selecting and purchasing for Shadwell Farm, the operation of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and was the busiest buyer at the 2014 Easter sale for the second year in a row, spending more than $8m on 20 yearlings. Purchases from the 2013 sale include South Africa’s Champion 2YO Filly Majmu, stakes winners Mitraad and Banadeer, plus promising runners Tashbeeh and Tawteen, whose consistent performances on the track in Australia show why the global racing giant chose Easter as a source of quality bloodstock. Other UAE interests include Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum who at the 2014 Easter Yearling Sale purchased promising juveniles Sooboog and Mawahibb, the halfbrother to Golden Slipper winner Mossfun who races in the colours of Hussain Lootah, the son of Emirates Park’s owner His Excellency Nasser Lootah. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum through his Darley breeding operation has been a consistent supporter of the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale since Darley’s entrance into the Australian industry in 2002. Also purchased at last year’s sale by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Bloodstock Ltd, two year-old filly Thurlow has already had great success on the track with two wins and a second from her three starts including the MRC Chairman’s StakesGr.3 in February. Leading Hong Kong bloodstock agent George Moore has also enjoyed a great amount of success recently with the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities rating his

Gr.1 glory for his owners Dr and Mrs Cornel Li Fook Kwan. Another 2011 purchase, Notlistenin’tome won more than $300,000 in Australia before being exported to Hong Kong late last year. At the 2014 sale, Moore spent a further $2,390,000 on six yearlings. Not to be outdone, Kentucky-based entities including Stonerstreet Farm and Spendthrift Farm have begun to take an interest in the Australian industry, both spending significant capital at last year’s sale. Leading US agent John Moynihan, spent $840,000 on a filly for Stonerstreet Farm now named Kangarilla Joy. Already a trial winner, she is in the care of Peter and Paul Snowden and is being aimed at Sydney’s Autumn Carnival. Spendthrift Farm was another newcomer to the Easter sale, spending $1.6m on three yearlings, all aimed at racing in Australia, including the aptly named filly by Fastnet Rock, Ameristralia. Australian breeders are able to produce a premium product with vast land and resources in areas such as the Hunter Valley in New South Wales and the north-eastern region of Victoria, as well as Queensland’s Darling Downs and this is becoming more broadly recognised by overseas interests. It should be pleasing for everyone in the Australian breeding and racing industries that international investment in Australia has been continuing to increase for a number of years, and is forecast to continue to do so.

Slipper winner

an $85,000 Easter bargain by Brian Russell

The $85,000 that Mossfun, the Mossman filly who triumphed in the 2014 edition of the $3.5m Golden Slipper, cost the astute buying team from the Emirates Park Stud on the final day of the 2013 Inglis Australian Yearling Sale, was modest in terms of the quality of the catalogue and the strength of the buying bench. She has turned out to be a real bargain buy. For 100 years, the apex of thoroughbred marketing in Australia has been the Easter Sale. Excellence looms large on every page in the catalogue, so much so that in the year when Mossfun was entered yearlings sold up to $5m, eight each realised $1m or more and the sale averaged $290,481. Despite this, 100 of the 437 lots in the 2013 catalogue who found buyers each sold under $100,000, bottoming out at $10,000. The modestly priced youngsters included offspring of Mossman, Redouteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choice, Exceed and Excel, Encosta de Lago, Zabeel, Fastnet Rock, Commands, Hussonet (USA), More Than Ready (USA), Flying Spur, Authorized (IRE), Tale of the Cat (USA), Testa Rossa, Starcraft, Stratum, Snitzel, All American, Shamardal (USA), Lonhro, Northern Meteor, Manhattan Rain, Big Brown (USA), Galileo (IRE), New Approach (IRE), Dane Shadow, Canny Lad, Bernardini (USA), Sebring and I Am Invincible. Because only those products of mares in the higher echelon of fashion and race success are accepted into the Easter catalogue, their offspring in the main have higher residual value as sires or broodmares. Colts or fillies who take the two jewels of juvenile racing open to all representatives of the age group, the Golden Slipper in Sydney and $1m Blue Diamond in Melbourne, not only reward their owners on most occasions with far more in prizemoney than their yearling cost, but also become $1m-plus stud prospects. Two very good examples of Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale graduates with a big jump in value are Mossfun ($85,000), the 2013 Slipper winner, and the More Than Ready filly Samaready ($150,000), winner the previous year of the Blue Diamond and a close third as favourite in the Slipper. Samaready, a dual Gr.1 winner, collected $1.66m from six wins and two thirds in 13 starts.

What Fun is also the dam of a bay colt bred by Emirates Park who could be a brilliant product of this year’s Easter catalogue. This yearling is in the first crop of the stud’s exciting young Dream Ahead (USA), the Joint European Champion 2YO Colt 2010 and for 2011 the European Champion Sprinter and Champion 3YO Miler in France and Great Britain.

Out of Samar, a Secret Savings daughter, she went to All Too Hard last season at the Vinery Stud. A half-brother by Casino Prince to Black Caviar, All Too Hard also covered Mossfun’s dam Eye For Fun last season. She did not race, but is a brilliantly bred daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice-Snippets’ Lass by Snippets) and What Fun (Canny LadMore Happiness (USA) by Nijinsky). What Fun has had eight foals, the first five all winners. One of them, Cat d’Antibes, was a brilliant two year-old whose efforts included a win in the Ken Russell Classic-LR at the Gold Coast at two, and thirds in the QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.2 and BTC Champagne Stakes-Gr.2. Allegra, a Sydney winner by Dehere (USA) out of What Fun, is the dam of the Exceed and Excel 2014-15 stakes winner Eximius, so far successful in five races, including the VRC Hilton Hotels Stakes-LR and Sunshine Coast Guineas-LR.

However, the best descendant of What Fun so far is her Mossman grandaughter Mossfun. Bred on Fairview Park Stud, Grose Wold, Hawkesbury Valley for Dr Ian Duckworth, Heather McKinnon, Darren Pullman and Linda Duckworth and raced by Emirates Park out of the Team Hawkes stable, she competed five times at two for four wins in Sydney, the first at Kensington and the others, the Widden-Gr.3, Silver Slipper-Gr.2 (four lengths) and Golden Slipper-Gr.1, at Rosehill Gardens. Runner up in the Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2 at the latter track, she has so far repaid her Easter Yearling investment of $85,000, the value of non-stakes events in Sydney on Saturdays, with earnings of $2,480,500. This sum looks certain to be boosted as Mossfun is being readied for a campaign in major autumn races. Mossfun’s sire Mossman has gone close to two Golden Slipper winners as another daughter, Pure Energy, followed up wins in the STC Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2 and Gold Coast Magic Millions Plate with a Slipper second. She was bred on Peter and Wendy Moran’s Noble Park Stud, at Innisplain, Queensland (now known

as Eliza Park Queensland). The Morans also bred Mossman using a sire they owned, American Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Success Express (USA) (Princequillo-Au Printemps by Dancing Champ), now 30 and in retirement at Vinery. These two brilliant fillies are among the 355 winners (70.4%) of 1152 races and $41m generated by Mossman (ex Lichen Lady by Twig Moss (FR)). Other major performers among his 31 stakes winners include Buffering (16 wins, $4,873,240), Offcourseican (eight wins, $794,295), Love Conquers All (eight wins, $1,380,000), Neeson (eight wins, $762,665), Second Effort (11 wins, $680,703) and Miss Mossman (won New Zealand Oaks-Gr.1). Mossman, whose eighth dam is the flying filly and outstanding broodmare Mumtaz Mahal, was a good class Gr.1 performer from 1200m to 2040m. His principal efforts were wins in the T.J. Smith Queensland Classic-Gr.1 at two and MVRC AAMI Vase-Gr.2 at three, seconds in the VRC Australian Guineas-Gr.1, AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1 and MVRC Alister Clark Stakes, thirds in the STC George Ryder-Gr.1, AJC Champagne StakesGr.1 and MRC Autumn Classic-Gr.2 and fourths in the VRC Victoria Derby-Gr.1 and MRC Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1. Mossman was initially used as a sire at Noble Park, but then, like his sire, transferred to Vinery Stud in the Hunter Valley. He stood at $27,500 in 2014 and covered 89 mares.

Similar to a number of thoroughbred studs in Queensland, the property has been handed down from one generation to the next with Andrew’s son and grandson, Colin and Scott, the current managing owners. Whether it is the breeding and agistment of mares, rearing foals, raising and preparing yearlings, or spelling racehorses, Eureka’s philosophy is to allow horses to relax and roam free over undulating hills or across miles of natural pasture or crop-sown paddocks to assists in their development, progress and peace of mind. “The fertile black soil of the Darling Downs, the fresh running creek water, rolling hills and Queensland sunshine, all amidst the fresh mountain air atop the Great Dividing Range, works wonders for the development, rest and recovery of horses,” Scott said. Over the years Eureka has earned the title of Leading Queensland Stud and has stood successful Queensland stallions, Semipalatinsk

(USA), Brave Warrior and Piccolo (GB) amongst others. The recently retired dual Gr.1 winner Spirit of Boom and Red Dazzler (sire of Gr.1 winner Tinto) are the current resident stallions. The past 12 months has been a particularly fruitful period for Eureka thanks to the deeds of not only Spirit of Boom (Gr.1 wins in the Doomben 10,000 and William Reid Stakes) and his half-brother the ATC The Galaxy-Gr.1 winner Temple of Boom (also Victory Stakes-Gr.2 and runner-up in the Doomben 10,000-Gr.1 and Stradbroke Handicap-Gr.1), but also with Tinto winning the Queensland Oaks–Gr.1 and Pure Purrfection taking out the Listed Bribie Handicap. Pure Purrfection is now in foal to Spirit of Boom. Eureka mares have won the Queensland Broodmare of the Year Award on no less than five occasions, most recently with Temple Spirit, dam of Spirit of Boom and Temple of Boom. The stud owes much of its success to a historical (yet increasingly rare) approach of supporting foundation mares and their daughters over decades, a strategy Scott says is “also supported by world renowned owner/ breeder, the Aga Khan”. A: “Last year was our first year back at Easter after quite some time. We sold three Snitzel yearlings and one of them, Air Apparent, is showing quite a bit of promise. She was sixth of 14 in the Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 on February 28 and looks to have a bright future.” Q: Why do you like selling at Easter? A: “Being a later sale it offers an opportunity for the yearlings to develop further than they may have if prepared for the earlier sales. Easter is a premium auction and it attracts owners and trainers from all over Australia and internationally. It’s a sale we particularly target with yearlings who are out of our better-bred mares and by the top-end sires.” Q: What are some of your recent selling highlights at Inglis? A: “We sold three nice yearlings at the Classic Sale this February and were quite happy with our results. Our QTIS Hinchinbrook colt sold for 65,000 and we also sold a nice Snitzel filly and a Smart Missile colt. At the 2014 Easter Sale we sold Air Apparent for $100,000 and she already looks a really good buy for her owners.” Q: Can you tell me about some of the racetrack successes for Eureka-bred horses? A: “Eureka has helped produce Group winners in every state of Australia including Gr.1 winners Spirit of Boom, Temple of Boom, Tinto, Picaday, Just Now, Scenic Peak and Show a Heart, as well as multiple Group wins and Gr.1 seconds for horses such as Eureka Jewel, Memphis Blues and Skalato. We’re looking forward to following the success of Air Apparent this autumn and in the future.

Q: Can you provide an overview of your 2015 draft? A: “We are taking two athletic and very well bred colts to Sydney. The first is Lot 391, a strong son of So You Think (NZ). He is out of homebred Eureka mare Express Air (Piccolo (GB)), a winner of three races including the Queensland Guineas-Gr.2. This colt is a fourth generation horse from the farm and we have had good success with prolific winners such as stakes winner Diamondsondinside, a winner of 15 races, and stakes-placed horses such as Pearly Shells (eight wins) and Igles Star (seven wins), all from the family of this colt. “So You Think (High Chaparral) is a multiple Gr.1 winner in Australia and Europe and of course a dual winner of Australia’s premier WFA race, the W.S. Cox Plate-Gr.1. He was a champion on the track and if early sales results are anything to go by, he looks like being a successful sire.

“The second of our colts is Lot 509, a very well-related son of New Approach. A son of Galileo, New Approach was a superb two and three year-old and his eight wins (five Gr.1) included the Dewhurst StakesGr.1 and the English Derby-Gr.1. He’s doing a good job in both the hemispheres as a stallion with his winners including Dawn Approach, European Champion Two Year-Old Colt and winner of eight of his 12 starts. Dawn Approach shuttled for Darley in 2014. In Australia, New Approach has sired May’s Dream winner of the Australian Oaks-Gr.1 as well as Group winners Gamblin’ Guru and Montsegur. This colt, from the Danehill Dancer mare Bal du Siecle (GB), is from a very well-performed family whose members include the champion Might and Power and other Gr.1 winners Mosheen and Lucky Owners. On type it will be difficult to find a better-looking horse at the sales. We’re excited to be taking these two colts to the sales and are confident both will be popular.”

Evergreen Stud’s yearling manager, Andrew Russell, believes the core reason for these successes is the climate on the farm. “The beauty of this property is that it is basically drought proof, which allows us to feed consistently all year around. Much has been written about proven sire and triple Gr.1 winner Medaglia d’Oro (USA) (El Prado-Cappucino Bay by Bailjumper) and the consensus is that he appears to the eye to be bigger than he is, with a racing style that made the most of his long stride and high head carriage. Lot 73 is a colt Russell describes as “in the same mould as the sire, a classical type of yearling with great scope and good bone, very handsome.” This colt is from Mysterious Light (Fantastic Light (USA)), a city-winning mare from the family of Champion Sire Fastnet Rock. Now Medaglia d’Oro’s first Australian runners are kicking goals, this colt, who certainly has a stallion’s pedigree, is well worth an inspection. The mare’s first foal, Mali Rose, also by the sire, had one start last season as a juvenile in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes-

The last two colts for Evergreen’s 2015 Easter draft, in ring order, are both by Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, who needs no introduction to readers, but let’s quickly re-cap. A dual Gr.1-winning three year-old sprinter, Fastnet Rock went to stud with much fanfare, and has definitely lived up to the hype. His first crop was in 2006, and he has 74 individual stakes winners, headed by 18 Gr.1 winners and a Champion Sire title in 2011-12. Fastnet Rock, who commands the highest fee of any sire in Australia, heads this season’s premiership with 13 individual stakes winners already on the board at the half-way point for 2014-15. Lot 113 is a colt “by a champion out of a champion”. This combination isn’t seen very often, and this colt’s dam is four-time Gr.1 winner Princess Coup (Encosta de Lago), who was crowned NZ Champion Three Year-Old in 2006-07. Her first foal is Vanilla Princess, a city winner this season by Lonhro, and her second foal, by Redoute’s Choice,

Mabee Handicap-Gr.1 as well as a Gr.2 and two Listed events. Her dam is the NZ Oaks-Gr.1 placed Sneech (Grosvenor) and it is a very strong family whose members include Gr.1 winners Roman Emperor (Montjeu), Glorious Days (Hussonet) and Tully Thunder (Thunder Gulch). Black Mamba’s first foal is Ringhals, a three year-old Street Cry filly now owned by Darley, and her two year-old by Redoute’s Choice, Blackmarker, has trialled well recently for Gai Waterhouse. Russell says of this yearling colt, “He is a well grown, very athletic style of horse who will suit most buyers. He has good bone and is very easy on the eye.”

SLIPPER SUCCESS HIGHLIGHTS A WINNING STRATEGY WHEN a vendor sells a Golden Slipper winner, you’d expect to see lots of backslapping and general cheering about the achievement as breeding the winner of our major race for two year-olds is the ultimate goal for many breeders. Last year’s Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner Mossfun (Mossman-Eye for Fun by Snitzel)), bred in conjunction by Fairview Park’s Linda Duckworth, her husband Dr Ian Duckworth and partners Heather McKinnon and Darren Pullman, sold at Easter in 2013 for $85,000 and yet Linda Duckworth remains down to earth about Mossfun and her victory. “Oh, lots of great things have already been written about her and her win in the Slipper was terrific,” she said, “but to us she was just a nice big, athletic filly.” Fairview Park sold her half-brother by Magic Albert last year at Easter for $750,000, and now named Mawahibb, he ran fourth on debut to Vancouver in the Canonbury Stakes-Gr.3. Unfortunately, their dam Eye for Fun missed the next two seasons and won’t have a yearling on offer for a while yet. Another high profile graduate from this vendor is the Gr.1-winning colt and

now young sire Ilovethiscity (Magic Albert-Kensington Rose by Kenfair)). Winner of the 2011 Royal Randwick Guineas-Gr.1, Ilovethiscity has his first crop of yearlings for sale this year. There are plenty of other winners as well, such as Listed performer Unequivocal (Not a Single Doubt-Chocaholic by General Nediym)) and recent exciting debut winner Nancy (Big Brown-Shalimar Sky (Hurricane Sky)). Linda Duckworth puts these recent successes down to a few simple factors. “Luck aside, we always breed to colonial stallions as we know that they are best suited to local racing conditions; and we also use the same philosophy with our broodmares,” she said. “We like to have female families buyers are familiar and comfortable with, not just because we think it works best on our racetracks, but also it helps buyers when they on-sell to their own clients. All up, it is a good recipe for us and we will keep using it.” The farm itself is a tranquil 60.7ha (150 acres) set at the base of the Blue Mountains on the Grose River in the Hawkesbury region. The land is a mixture of hills and flats and is home to

around 40 broodmares including clientowned horses. Every year Fairview Park offers between 20 and 30 yearlings for sale, with a small draft of those at Easter. This year the stud has seven yearlings in its Easter draft. Fairview will have an exciting start to Easter 2015 with Lot 2 in the sale being “a big strong colt by champion So You Think out of the brilliant SW Kishkat winner of the Toy Show and 3rd in the Gr.2 Chelmsford S. She is a beautiful mare who won 5 of her 9 starts and is already a winner producer. This colt also has a lot of strength and quality from his sire.” Lot 492 is by the ill-fated Gr.1 winner and superb sire Northern Meteor from US bred Westphalia (Gone West) who is a French juvenile winner and daughter of Europe’s Champion Three Year-Old Filly of 1993, the three-time Gr.1 winner Intrepidity (Sadler’s Wells). This colt has a strong European flavour to his pedigree and has inbreeding to Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector and is line bred to influential mare Rough Shod. BREEDING WINNERS IS IN THE GENES THE Harris family has been raising good horses for generations and Julie Harris, the latest in a long line of experienced thoroughbred breeders, is carrying on the good work at her lovely property in the epicentre of the breeding industry in the Hunter Valley. Holbrook Thoroughbreds is a family owned boutique broodmare and agistment farm in prime thoroughbred country about 15 kilometres east of Scone on the Pages River. Julie Harris and parents Alan and Madge started Holbrook Thoroughbreds at the Scone property in 1998 following a long involvement in the Harris family’s Holbrook Stud in the Widden Valley, which had been breeding thoroughbreds very successfully for more than 150 years. We caught up with Julie Harris to talk to her about the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale draft from Holbrook Thoroughbreds.

Q: Why do you like selling at Easter? A: “The Easter sale caters for buyers and sellers at all levels. There is a very strong and diverse buying bench, so if you have a particularly nice yearling, the sky is the limit.” Q: What are some of your recent selling highlights at Inglis? A: “In 2012 we sold a Lonhro filly out of Gr.2 winner Patpong (Royal Academy) for $510,000, making her the most expensive yearling filly by her sire sold that year. In 2013 we sold a Snitzel colt out of Jubilee Kate (Distinctly North) for $300,000 and this year we’re offering the sister to him as Lot 462. Snitzem, winner of four races and nearly $200,000, is a brother to both yearlings. At last year’s Easter sale we sold a New Approach colt out of Gr.3-winning Danehill mare Clothilde for $400,000. We’re offering the brother to him at Easter.

Q: How long have you been selling at the Inglis Easter Sale?

Q: Can you tell me about some of the racetrack successes for horses sold by Holbrook?

A: “This is our 10th year selling at Inglis Easter and with eight nice yearlings it is the largest draft we’ve taken there.”

A: “We have a lovely, even draft of nice horses with five colts and three fillies. Five are by leading sires Snitzel, Testa Rossa, Choisir, New Approach and Congrats, we have a filly by a leading first season sire Hinchinbrook, and two yearlings by popular freshmen sires Smart Missile and Helmet. “We start with Lot 5, a colt by Smart Missile from city-placed Kraal (Viscount). This is her first live foal and she is a half-sister to three stakes performers including Sabie. With the Smart Missiles selling very well this year already and being purchased by many of Australia’s leading trainers and owners, this colt whose third dam is Gr.3 winner Lusso, is sure to be popular. Lot 440 is a filly by one of the leading first season sires in Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) and from noted producer Hot ‘n’ Breezy (Zephyr Zip). This yearling is a half-sister to the tough mare Hot Danish, multiple Gr.1 winner of the All-Aged Stakes-Gr.1 and Doomben 10,000-Gr.1 and more than $2.33m in prizemoney. Holbrook sold Hot Danish in 2005 for just $32,000.

LOYAL STAFF, QUALITY CARE A WINNING COMBINATION DAVID BAXTER’S Macquarie Stud has been in his family for about 50 years and has been selling at the Inglis Australian Easter Sale since 1975. This longevity in the breeding industry is admirable and when asked about it, Baxter said there were two main factors, the first was to keep working hard to strive for quality, but by far the most important factor was loyal staff. Macquarie Stud certainly has that loyalty in spades including three staff members who have been at the stud for a combined 105 years. They are Greg Henman, 45 years, Mark Lousick, 35 years and Jason Lay, 25 years. This work ethic, quality care, and a property offering a perfect environment for thoroughbreds has proved a winning combination. Macquarie Stud’s 1214ha (3000 acre) property fronts the Macquarie River, giving the farm fertile grazing land and providing a great start to life for racehorses. In recent times, good horses to come off the farm include two youngsters who each won on debut this year. Stevie Boy (by Exceed and Excel) won in Sydney at the start of February over 1100m and Broad Shoulders (Shamardal) won at Wyong over 1100m on February 15 and is a half-brother to Lot 50 in Macquarie’s Easter draft, a filly by Stratum from Miss Bax (Canny

Lad), who carries a 3fx2f cross of Golden Slipper winner and sire Canny Lad. Other good horses to come from this property in the past few years include Gr.2 winner Arabian Gold (Dubawi), and Listed winners Beyonce’s Star (Orientate) and Destiny’s Kiss (Power of Destiny). Further back in time, Baxter says there are too many good horses to recall all of them, but his two favourites are AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1 winner Shaybisc (Biscay) who was owned by the late John Bradshaw, and Magic Gleam (Rassendyll) who had 100 starts from age two to age 10 and took home 80 cheques, including placing twice in the Galaxy Handicap-Gr.1. He was the type of tough consistent horse that any owner would be pleased to have. Macquarie Stud offered Gr.3 winner Zingaling (Redoute’s Choice) at Sydney Easter in 2008, and remained in her ownership to race her with much success. Her yearling colt by More Than Ready is Lot 257 at Easter, and Baxter says he is an exceptional colt who can’t be faulted. Her first foal, Knit ‘n Purl, is also by More than Ready and won on debut as a two year-old at the start of February. Zingaling is a half-sister to Gr.3 winner Rainbow Styling, and this family boasts stakes winners in Australia, South Africa and the highly competitive racing nation of Japan.

Baxter says this fellow is a sharp colt who is particularly good for a first foal. Another attractive filly is Lot 372, by Exceed and Excel from Donna Intelligente by Dehere. This yearling is a sister to the city winner Sense and Reason, a filly who won more BOBS money than any other horse last year, according to Baxter. Lot 372’s dam boasts two year-old Gr.3 winner Burning Sands and Listed winner Jeram New Village as half-siblings. The other standout lot from Macquarie Stud this year is Lot 324, a colt Baxter describes as “the right type of Exceed and Excel”. Macquarie Stud has sent mares to Exceed and Excel every year he has been at stud, and this has given the stud plenty of experience to pick out the types who run well for the sire. Lot 324 is out of Canyonville (Black Minnaloushe), a city-winning mare with a family full of black type, including WA Derby-Gr.1 winner Markus Maximus, and further back to Gr.1 winner Circles of Gold (dam of Elvstroem and Haradasun). The rest of the yearlings in this draft are by a variety of sires and offer types likely to appeal to a wide range of buyers. Lot 12, by Snitzel from Lady Gretchen (Don Eduardo) is a filly with plenty of length and she has the Snitzel powerful back-end. She is the third foal of a winning mare who has already left a dual winner this season. This is the family of

NZ based sire and Gr.1 winner Keeper, and four-time Gr.1 winner Metal Bender. Lot 50 is a filly by Stratum from Miss Bax, a well-related winning Canny Lad mare whose first two foals to race are winners, including the earlier-mentioned Broad Shoulders. Baxter says this youngster is “a pretty filly who is a later foal, and who looks good and sound”. The chestnut colt, Lot 302, by young sire Star Witness, is the first foal of winning mare Be Elusive (Elusive Quality) who was also city placed at two. Baxter describes this colt as “very forward for a latish foal with a stallion’s pedigree”. The dam of Be Elusive (To Be Surprised by Redoute’s Choice) is a three-quarter sister to Champion Sprinter and Champion Sire Exceed and Excel, and this is a strong American family full of quality performers. GOOD REPUTATION IS THOROUGHLY DESERVED THE motto of Milburn Creek is, “a good reputation does not just happen - it must be earned”. There is no truer sentiment in the tough, competitive game of thoroughbred breeding, but it’s fair to say boutique NSW stud Milburn Creek has a good reputation and then some. These days it enjoys an enviable reputation for producing high-class stock year-in year-out at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and the 2015 edition will be no exception. In fact, Milburn Creek’s owner John, a man who knows a thing or two about horsepower, the automotive and the ‘original’ variety, believes this year’s draft from the Wildes Meadow property is the best the stud has presented at a yearling sale anywhere in the country. John and his wife Trish have been breeding horses since the 1970s and moved to the southern highlands in 2011 after being at Grose Wold for many years. “We reckon we have the best batch of youngsters we have probably ever taken to a yearling sale anywhere. WONDERFUL MARES BEHIND “STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL BUNCH” “A CONSPICUOUS effort to buy high class stakes performing mares who tick the boxes with conformation and pedigree”, has resulted in a classy Easter draft for Segenhoe Stud. Described by stud manager Peter O’Brien as “a stunningly beautiful bunch of yearlings” the draft is the second for Segenhoe since being taken over by the Maloney family in 2010. “We had a terrific sale with a small group last year when our Street Cry filly out of the Lonhro mare Munhro was the sale topping female at $1.05 million, and I am confident that success will be eclipsed this year.” The stud has already received plenty of good feedback on the youngsters from visitors such as Gai Waterhouse, and O’Brien has derived plenty of satisfaction in seeing the stud’s mating plans come to fruition. “We ideally like to mate our mares with proven stallions,” he said, noting that the majority of the Easter yearlings are by such sires. “It is great to see the subsequent quality of our foals.” The draft kicks off with Lot 42, a bay colt by High Chaparral (IRE) from brilliant juvenile Merlene (Danehill). REVITALISED FARM BUILDS ON ITS RECIPE FOR SUCCESS SLEDMERE Stud is located on the edge of Scone in the heart of thoroughbred country of the Upper Hunter Valley, and is operated by Catriona (Treen) and Royston Murphy. It has a long and proud history of producing high class racehorses, and the husband and wife team took over the management of Sledmere in 2014 and have enjoyed their first year running the farm together. The Murphys have spent much of the past year working on improvements to the property. A new foaling complex has been constructed, along with 16 new yearling turn-out yards and plenty of new fencing. The hard work hasn’t just been about improvements, with Royston adding, “the farm ran 150 mares last season and foaled down more than 100 and we’re looking forward to doing similar numbers again this coming season.”

Sledmere offered this colt two years ago at Easter. By Lonhro from the Flying Spur mare Miss Portofino, he races as Anjaal and is Gr.1 placed in South Africa. Lot 58, his half-brother by Medaglia d’Oro is sure to be popular.

Sledmere’s recipe for success is “to breed and raise sound, healthy and on-type horses who will command top dollar in the ring and will ultimately graduate to racetrack success”. The stakes performers to come off the farm in recent seasons are evidence this formula is successful. Pane in the Glass (Testa Rossa-Lyrics by Bluebird (USA)) was home bred by Sledmere and was a Gr.3 winner of just under $700,000. More recently, stakes horses such as Politeness (Street Sense

(USA)-Berengaria by Commands) and the full siblings Cautious and Buckinghampshire (Lonhro-Seeking Attention by Exceed and Excel) have been reared and sold by Sledmere. Very much looking forward to the Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Royston describes the Sledmere yearlings “as one of the best drafts we’ve ever had. They’re a really nice bunch of horses who will be well received.” Sledmere is offering five colts and seven fillies from a cross section of top-end stallions including Street Cry (IRE), Sebring, More Than Ready, Snitzel and Exceed and Excel. Monton is a dual Gr.2 winner of 10 races and nearly $900,000 and this grey colt has plenty of length, has short and well-boned cannons, a lovely action and a great attitude. Royston describes Lot 417, a bay filly, as the result of “a lovely mating”. She is by Street Cry out of Gaze, a Cape Cross (IRE) mare. Gaze was a Gr.1 winner of eight races in New Zealand and Australia and placed in a Doomben Cup-Gr.1 and quite a few other Australasian Group events. Boasting a nice staying pedigree with a great potential for residual value, Royston is excited to be offering this filly for sale.

Lot 58 is a brown or black colt by Medaglia d’Oro (USA) from city-winning Flying Spur mare Miss Portofino. This young mare has started her stud career very well and the triple winner has had two foals to race for two winners, including the Sledmere graduate Anjaal (by Lonhro), who won at two and is Gr.1 placed in South Africa. This yearling is from a running family and Royston said, “this colt has a lot of substance and is well balanced with a good girth”. Lot 309 is a brown filly by Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner and boom young sire Sebring from Berengaria (Commands), the dam of Gr.3 winner Politeness (Street Sense). This filly has plenty of scope and is from a family littered with stakes winners including Thackeray, Fairytales, Parables, Our Fable and Rancho Classic. “She stands over quite a bit of ground, but is very well balanced.” Politeness has returned in good fashion for her autumn campaign, running a good third at Caulfield first-up and the Denman filly out of the mare, named Alpina, is in the John Thompson yard in Sydney and reportedly showing good early promise. Lot 164 is a brown filly by Street Cry from stakes placed Seeking Attention (Exceed and Excel). The dam, who won five races to 1100m, has had two foals

Lot 148 is a strong Exceed and Excel filly out of Royal Academy mare Royal Snip, a daughter of stakes winner Snippet’s Girl and a sister to stakes winner Academy Dancer. Royal Snip won twice to 1200m and was placed at Listed level and has been a good producer for her owners, leaving six winners including juvenile stakes winner Royal Babe. With the two year-old season hotting up it’s no surprise to see the Exceed and Excel juveniles going well again, the sire leading the rankings in late February with 10 two year-old winners of $2.1m. Although he’s been one of the best sires of two year-olds in Australia during the past few seasons, Royston points out Exceed and Excel yearlings are often overlooked at the sales. “This is the best Exceed and Excel we have taken to the sales in quite a while and well worth inspecting.”

The quality of yearling sale drafts presented by Southern Cross Breeders is well known and Easter 2015 is no exception with a quality selection of well related youngsters by a good mix of proven and up-andcoming stallions.

Another young stallion whose progeny are bound to be keenly sought after is dual Cox Plate winner and European star So You Think (NZ), sire of Lot 345, a colt out of the triple stakes winner Crevette (Danehill) whose three to race have all been winners including the Tattersall’s Tiara-Gr.1 winner Cosmic Endeavour and the dual city winner Gamba. Crevette’s dam is the wonderful Twiglet (Edward Manifold Stakes-Gr.2) who earned the title of Broodmare of the Year thanks to the exploits of her two wonderful sons Easy Rocking and Fairy King Prawn. He has a magnificent action and a wonderful temperament, he is just a lovely horse.” Lot 404 is another So You Think, a grey half-sister to four winners including the South African Group winners Eight Street and Ottimo and the dam of the NZ Listed winner Caduceus. Her dam Figure of Eight (Octagonal) is a half-sister to the dual Group-winning Japanese galloper Meisho Beluga and from the family of one of the greats of the European turf in Dancing Brave. “She has developed amazingly through her preparation and she will mature into a lovely classic type as you’d expect,” Senga said. CLASSY QUINTET BY CHAMPION SO YOU THINK THE emergence of Think Big Stud was in many ways inevitable as owner Dato Tan Chin Nam’s core business is in real estate and the idea of owning land had been contemplated for a long time. Dato Tan had previously kept his mares at Kia-Ora Stud while hunting for the right property, and purchased Inverness Stud at Burradoo from Dr Jack Woolridge in late 2007.

Renamed Think Big Stud, after Dato Tan’s dual Melbourne Cup winner, the farm was positioned in a green zone during the equine influenza crisis and this resulted in the farm standing its own stallions in order to cover the home mares during that difficult time. Gloaming Stakes-Gr.3 winner and Spring Champion Stakes-Gr.1 runner-up Pendragon (NZ) (Elnadim (USA)-Alacrity by Grosvenor) retired in 2007 and while he has covered only small books, he has become a solid winner-producer with 35 winners (51.5% of starters) of $2.3m, including multiple city winner The Peak and Blazing Dragon and stakes placed Abba. Listed winner and Group placed Prince Arthur (Danehill (USA)-Scribbling by Palace Music)) retired to stud in 2009 and has already left the good stakes placed three year-old Smart Lad from few runners. In 2009, after Viewed’s Melbourne Cup win the previous November, the

income from his wins allowed the farm to expand by buying a block of land from a neighbour, and So You Think’s great success, which included Cox Plate wins in 2009 and 2010 and more Gr.1 glory in England and Ireland, allowed further expansion. Now the farm covers 121.4ha (300 acres) nestled alongside the Wingecarribee River. The Southern Highlands region has a micro-climate similar to New Zealand’s famed Waikato region, and Think Big Stud makes the most of the elevation (690m above sea level), which gives the farm colder nights, more rainfall than the Hunter Valley, and allows for different types of pastures. The hope is that the similarity to New Zealand’s best breeding climates will ensure Think Big Stud grows horses in the same tough mould New Zealand is famous for. Think Big Stud’s first sales season was in 2008 and the stud started with a bang, bringing only one yearling to the Inglis Classic and selling the filly by Galileo (IRE) from Freja (Danehill) for just $45,000. Named Sidera, she won her first three starts including the Turffontein Fillies Mile-Gr.3. At Inglis Easter in 2008, Think Big Stud presented three yearlings, selling two and passing in a filly by Shamardal (USA) from Zona (Zabeel) with a reserve of just $40,000. The next year Think Big Stud sold Listed winner Liveandletdie, and there are many more horses showing potential who have been sold at subsequent sales. When international champion So You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral (IRE)-Triassic by Tights (USA)) retired to Coolmore Stud after 14 wins (10 Gr.1) and earnings topping $10m, Think Big manager Duncan Ramage worked hard to select the best mates for the horse to give him every chance at success. As one of Dato Tan’s champions, it was inevitable Think Big Stud would support him with the stud’s best mares and its 2015 Newmarket draft has been tagged “Five by the best at Easter” and “100% So You Think”, as Think Big will offer three fillies and two colts from the first crop of this Sadler’s Wells grandson. Opening the stud’s account is Lot 230, a filly from the AJC Australian Oaks-Gr.1 runner-up Think Money (Danehill Dancer (IRE)). She is the second foal of her dam, who also ran fourth in the VRC Oaks-Gr.1. Second dam Ponziani (Nassipour (USA)) is a sister to Gr.2 winner Steel Phoenix and has produced three black type runners in Caissa, It’s All Money and Think Money. Next up is another filly, Lot 353, out of imported winner Dance on the Moon (IRE) (Fasilyev), already a success at stud with three winners including BTC Doomben Roses-Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 placed Awesome Planet (Giant’s Causeway (USA)) and Gr.2 placed Solar Eclipse (Iffraaj (GB)). This filly has ready residual value thanks to her half-sister Awesome Planet (already dam of Gr.2 second Awesome Rock), and a strong international pedigree. Her third dam is super broodmare Rose of Jericho (Alleged) who left four Group winners including English Derby-Gr.1 hero Dr Devious, Japanese Gr.1 winner and sire Shinko King (IRE) and successful sire Archway (IRE). The Gr.1 winner Maybe (Galileo), Champion Two Year-Old Filly in Europe and Ireland in 2011, also comes from this family. The most anticipated youngster in Think Big Stud’s draft is Lot 395, a brown colt out of star racemare Faint Perfume (Shamardal). Duncan Ramage pointed out buyers could have taken her home for just $40,000 at the 2008 Inglis Easter sale. “All our horses are offered for sale as we have separate breeding and buying budgets and the farm must pay for itself,” he said. “Everything the farm produces is entered for auction, and we let the auction houses decide which ones are acceptable for sale.

Only then do we race those that are rejected, either by the sales companies or by buyers, and we try to put realistic prices on them all, as shown by Faint Perfume herself.” Faint Perfume’s first foal was a colt by Street Cry (IRE) who sold at Easter last year for $475,000 and has been named Iron Boss. Zona (Zabeel) the dam of Faint Perfume did not win, but she is a daughter of Champion Three Year-Old Filly and dual Gr.1 winner Danendri (Danehill), who won more than $1m and is a successful broodmare, leaving Gr.3 winner Zingham (a brother to Zona) and Listed winner and Gr.1 placed Banc de Fortune (Galileo). Faint Perfume’s third dam, stakes-placed Stormy Exchange (USA), is by Storm Bird and Faint Perfume carries a 4mx4f cross of this influential stallion, the other line coming via Shamardal’s grandsire, twice Champion US Sire Storm Cat. Lot 413 is a brown filly by So You Think out of imported winner Forever Rafter (USA) (by the Storm Cat horse Delineator), who was successful at 8.5f in the US and is a half-sister to Qld Tatt’s RC Winter Stakes-Gr.1 winner Absolut Glam (Snowland) and Listed winner Nobby Snip (Snippetson), being from Pine Away (USA) (by Danzig Horse Pine Bluff), a half-sister to Gr.3 winner Moonflute (Danehill (USA)). The final So You Think yearling in the “100%” draft is Lot 601, a colt from winning Redoute’s Choice mare Redoutebelle, whose first foal, Beaudragon, is already a winner and city placed. Interestingly, this colt is inbred 3fx4f to Tights, the Gr.2-winning son of Champion sire Nijinsky who left three Gr.1 winners as a sire, and four as a broodmare sire including So You Think. His Queen of the Turf-Gr.3 winner The Perfume Garden is the third dam of this yearling, and she left three stakes performers including Redoutebelle’s dam, the VRC Oaks-Gr.1 placed Zazabelle.

Two of Think Big Stud’s 100% So You Think draft are fillies with Gr1 female connections. Lot 230 is the second foal of Gr1 AJC Oaks runnerup Think Money (pictured below) and Lot 413 is the third foal of a winning half-sister to crack mare Absolut Glam (pictured above) winner of almost $1 million. Both fillies have tremendous breeding potential once their racing days are over.

Ramage declined to make conformation statements about each of Think Big’s So You Think yearlings, saying instead, “We would prefer each and every person to inspect the draft and draw their own conclusions. So You Think has been well received at the sales so far, and overall they are athletic with presence and are great movers. He is a pure breeding bay, and many have the white star like him. The farm has already bought a few So You Think yearlings from other people in order to both support him and to diversify the pedigrees we have on the farm. It is part of a wider business plan to improve the quality of our farm’s potential offerings in the future, and we hope to either breed or buy our next champion via So You Think.”

Linda believes this positive trend will continue with Tyreel’s 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale draft bringing together an “exciting blend of blueblood genetics that has produced the finest of physical specimens the thoroughbred breed has to offer.” Tyreel opens its account with Lot 204, a stunning chestnut filly by More Than Ready out of stakes placed Flying Spur daughter Star Mystic. This eye-catching filly is bred on the same cross as Sebring, and her athletic physique strongly resembles that of her sire. From the family of Alverta, Aerobatics and Revolte, this family has continued to produce consistent quality performers. Moving on, from one outstanding filly to another (Lot 220) by More Than Ready. This youngster is from the Redoute’s Choice mare Tahni Girl, a Gr.3 winner and Magic Night-Gr.2 runner-up, with earnings of almost $400,000. She has produced a strong and imposing filly who possesses many of the best attributes of these two champion sires, and of course she is bred on the successful More Than Ready/Danehill cross. This filly is already a sister to three black type performers including Gr.3 winner Maschino. The most recent is Tahni Dancer (Sebring), a filly bred on very similar lines to great success.

Lot 248 is an attractive filly by the ill-fated but extremely exciting sire Northern Meteor from city winner Western Princess (Western Symphony). The dam has already produced precocious two year-old The Huntress (Husson), a Listed winner and Gr.3 placed filly, and five other winners including stakes placed Lord Fuji. This filly, from the final crop of her sire, is one of a select few left for public auction by a stallion who has continued to upgrade his mares. The first of the colts from the draft will not let the fillies take all the limelight. Lot 346 is a Redoute’s Choice colt out of leading NZ two year-old filly of 2006-07 in Crossyourheart (Show a Heart) and with all the very best traits of his champion sire. He’s an athletic walking colt who maintains a great presence. He is out of one of the fastest juveniles of her year in New Zealand who was a multiple stakes winner. This family, whose members include HK champ All Thrills Too and Crossyourheart’s Gr.3-winning brother Gotta Have Heart, has continued to produce exceptional performers, and with the powerful update of Turnbull Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) winner Lucia Valentina in recent months it is a family on the up.

Well worth waiting for in Session Two at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale is Lot 585, a bay colt by the champion international racehorse and now exciting sire So You Think from US 900m juvenile winner Passageway (USA) (Gold Fever). This colt has impressed all who have seen him and, like many by his sire, has the look and walk of a supreme athlete. His second dam, a sister to Pancho Villa and Terlingua (dam of Storm Cat and Chapel of Dreams) is by the great Secretariat, and his third dam Gr.3 winner Crimson Saint, left seven winners including champion Royal Academy. This family has great potential, and with the promising San Sierra (Encosta de Lago-Passageway) already set to perform well for his dam, the colt could be “the one” to wait for.

A seventh generation of the Thompson family is now at the helm and the property is in an environment ideal for the rearing of young thoroughbreds. Bluebloods spoke to Ryan McEvoy, Widden’s marketing and nominations manager, about the historic farm’s draft for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Q: What are the highlights for Widden on and off the track during the past 12 months?

A: “You could argue Widden Stud graduates have not enjoyed a better 12 months. There have been 20 individual stakes winners including the winners of nine Gr.1 races in the past year. This is particularly satisfying for all the team here and very rewarding for all the hard work put in to produce this type of quality. Multiple Gr.1 winner Dissident is in contention for Horse of the Year, Lucky Thunder, Bonaria and Hucklebuck are others representing the Widden brand who have saluted at Gr.1. In fact, 4 of the top 6 home in the recent Gr1 Oakleigh Plate represented the Widden brand including sales graduate Shamal Wind. “The Gr.1 winner Driefontein is a Widden sales graduate as is this year’s Magic Millions Two Year-Old Classic winner Le Chef. Other stakeswinning Widden graduates this year include Tawteen, Stratum Star, Thurlow, Sir Moments, The Messina Nymph and Atmospherical. “We’re very proud of the fact we can offer yearlings who not only present well at the sale but continue to thrive and improve once they enter stable life.”

Q: How long has Widden been selling at Easter?

Shamal Wind Q: Who are some of the highlight youngsters for Widden at Easter? A: “Easter is a truly unique sale. It’s a terrific time of the year, combining the fabulous racing carnival, the best yearlings on offer with a large and diverse buying bench. We couldn’t be happier with how our draft is shaping up. The Stratum colt (Lot 202) from the Gr.3-winning Grand Slam daughter Sprung (USA) is a special yearling who shares similar quality to his sister Tawteen, a brilliantly fast stakes winner this season bought by Shadwell Stud from the Widden draft here at Easter in 2013 for $260,000. “We have a gorgeous Sepoy filly (Lot 402) from the stakes placed Flying Spur mare Faster Pussycat who is a standout and of course this family has just continued to improve with half-sisters Peron, Gai’s Choice and Atmospherical successful at stakes level. The Smart Missile (Lot 299) from multiple Group winner and Gr.1 placed Ballet Society (Stravinsky) is a serious colt and interestingly is bred on the successful Fastnet Rock-Nureyev cross, which has produced Gr.1 winners Nechita, Rock Classic and Mosheen. “Sebring has enjoyed a phenomenal past 12 months and we have 10 quality yearlings by him including a stunning

filly (Lot 365) from the proven producer Demanding (Octagonal). She’s simply an eye-catching filly with real class and athleticism. She is a half-sister to two stakes winners in Spacecraft and Phenomenons, the latest up and comer in the family is Group placed half-brother Washington Heights, who you would expect to only enhance the pedigree. The colt (Lot 282) from Anabarbarian (Anabaa) is another who fills the eye and is of course bred on the successful Sebring/Anabaa cross which has produced the Widden graduate and multiple Gr.1 winner Dissident. “This year will see the last crop of our champion young sire Northern Meteor on offer at auction and we have a terrific selection of his progeny including the second foal (Lot 114) of stakes winning Princess Emmy (King’s Chapel). Of course her first foal Thurlow was presented at Easter last year, bought by David Redvers for Qatar Bloodstock, she is now a dual stakes winner. We also present the first foal, a striking colt from the two year-old stakes placed Fastnet Rock mare Fast Talker (Lot 401), a close relation to Champion Two Year-Old and Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily. He appears a two year-old type, which is a reflection of the family.

“Widden has been selling at William Inglis and Son since the inaugural Easter Sale 148 years ago and we’re certainly proud of the history we have shared together and none more so than the many great racehorses we have sold here at Newmarket. In recent years these have included champion sprintermiler All Silent, Caulfield Guineas winners Helenus and Anacheeva, in addition to Gr.1 winners in Hong Kong Floral Pegusus and Happy Zero, Gr.2 winners Running Tall and Admiration and stakes winners this season such as Banadeer, Tawteen and Thurlow, this trio being aimed at Gr.1 races at the time of writing. We are also excited about a very recent two year-old debut winner for Chris Waller named Vanbrugh who was bought from the Widden Easter draft.”

Two lots later is a Lonhro colt (Lot 87) out of the four times stakes placed Oh So Discreet (Bluebird), dam of Australasian Oaks-Gr.1 winner Maybe Discreet and Gr.3 winner Just Discreet. “A lovely colt with scope, a good action and powerful hindquarter. Carrying three strains of Dewhurst Stakes-Gr.1 winner Lunchtime, he is a “deep girthed colt with real presence and a wonderful temperament.” The only yearling by wonderful European sire Invincible Spirit (sire of I Am Invincible) in the sale, Lot 254, is out of Zarzuela (IRE) (Rock of Gibraltar), a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Glass Harmonium. “An attractive, very racy filly with a deep pedigree,” said Mitchell of this filly whose second and third dams are Gr.1 producers by Darshaan and Sadler’s Wells. “She looks like a two year-old already,” Mitchell said of Lot 265, a Medaglia d’Oro filly out of Admiring (Street Cry), a Group placed half-sister to Listed winner Empire Dancer. “She is a big filly with scope and has a great action.” Lot 268, by another talented first crop son of Fastnet Rock in Smart Missile, is a colt from one of Canada’s best families and is from the Machiavellian mare Alalunga (USA). This yearling half-brother to the stakes placed Almindoro is out of a daughter of the Gr.1 winner Classic Reign (Vice Regent), second dam of South African star Jackson, a triple Gr.1 winner. “A very athletic colt, he moves well.” Lot 380 is a filly by international champion and first crop sire So You Think (NZ) out of the Group placed Elimbari (Fastnet Rock), daughter of stakes winner Shalt Not, who produced flyer Amelia’s Dream. “A horse with tremendous girth and hindquarter, he looks very precocious, but with that So You Think quality.” Lot 419 is another nice filly by leading sire Snitzel out of the imported stakes winner Get Ready Bertie (USA) (More Than Ready) whose dual Group-winning dam De Bertie produced two Gr.3 winners. “A very mature filly with great girth, she looks like a real runner; bred on the successful Danehill/More Than Ready cross.” Inbred 4mx4m to champion sire Mr. Prospector is Lot 456, a More Than Ready colt out of the multiple city winner and Group placed Jalsah (Elusive QualityAlqwah by Danehill). From the family of Gr.1 winner King’s Chapel, this fellow is also bred on the More Than Ready/ Danehill cross. “A neat strong colt with lots of depth, typical of the stallion.” Lot

467 is a chestnut filly from the first crop of Dubawi’s Gr.1 winner Poet’s Voice (GB). From Seven Stars (King’s Best), this yearling is a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Happy Galaxy and out of a daughter of Gr.1 mare Porto Roca, dam of Dubai World Cup-Gr.1 hero Monterosso (also by Dubawi). “She looks like a Dubawi, very correct with lovely strong hocks.” Lot 470 is a bay filly by Star Witness out of Snow Blitz (Zabeel), daughter of the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 heroine Polar Success from the prolific Circles of Gold family. “A filly with scope who has thrown to Zabeel with great length and quality.” “A neat colt very like his sire,” is Lot 493, a Foxwedge out of Wooden Melody (Woodman). The dam is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Emerald Dream and to the second dam of Shooting to Win and Deep Field. This is the wonderful Eight Carat (GB) family. Lot 502, by Hinchinbrook, is a filly out of Advantage Receiver (Giant’s Causeway), a daughter of the Gr.1 sprinter Miss Kournikova, dam of Gr.3 winner Oakleigh Girl. “A very strong filly who looks like a two year-old with great girth and hindquarter.” The progeny of Gr.1 winner Foxwedge are bound to be in demand and another well related youngster of his is Lot 517, a half-sister to two city winners out of Brave Choice (Dr Fong) a daughter of Queensland Derby-Gr.1 and Queensland Oaks-Gr.1 winner Bravery, dam of nine winners including Brave Prince and Valourina. A descendant of influential broodmare La Troienne, she is “a good moving filly from a great Australian family.” The much-missed Northern Meteor is represented by Lot 559, a brown filly who is the second foal for multiple city winner Kiss ‘n Chase (Red Ransom) from the family of stakes winners Icy Calm and The Big Chill. “A filly with loads of scope who will develop into a magnificent three year-old.” Rounding off Yarraman Park’s Easter draft is Lot 566, a colt by I Am Invincible out city winner Luvumor (Flying Spur), a daughter Mam’selle Giselle, a sister to Gr.1 winner Baryshnikov, a half-sister to champion sire Zabeel and from the family of the exciting Hallowed Crown. “A late foal, he is very well balanced with a lovely head, a very attractive colt.”
