2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE RACE IMAGES
Track success found at NZB’s 2YO Sale The prospect of buying a ‘ready to run’ two year-old is becoming more appealing to buyers, and with a host of expert preparers, the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale is forming a name for itself as the leading sale of its kind in Australasia. Celebrating 35 years of racetrack success, NZB’s Ready to Run Sale boasts four times the number of Group wins of any comparable sale in Australasia with 28 wins in the past three seasons, while 107 stakes races have been won by its graduates during the past six seasons. In the past three seasons alumni of the sale have been victorious in 12 Gr.1 races, the only sale of its kind to yield Gr.1 success over that time, including four Gr.1 wins last season alone from three individual winners with Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor), Turn Me Loose (NZ) (Iffraaj) and Gaultier (NZ) (Rios), all achieving Gr.1 glory just one season from the fall of the hammer. Dual Derby winner Mongolian Khan rose to stardom in his three year-old season, winning seven of his nine starts for his owner Lang Lin of the China Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group. Trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, Mongolian Khan won the New Zealand Derby-Gr.1 in his homeland before adding victory in the Australian Derby-Gr.1 in Sydney, becoming the first horse to complete the double since the great Bonecrusher. The son of Holy Roman Emperor and the Centaine mare Centafit was knocked down for $NZ220,000 and with just 10 starts under his belt has earned more than $A1.9m in prizemoney. The Baker and Forsman partnership has had significant success with NZB Ready to Run Sale graduates and for the
2
second consecutive year had success in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 with Turn Me Loose. Winning by an impressive three lengths, the son of Iffraaj won the three year-old feature a year after fellow NZB Ready to Run Sale graduate and stablemate Atlante (Fastnet Rock). Having started in just a handful of races across his two and three year-old campaign, Turn Me Loose has already earned more than six-times his purchase price, bought for $NZ52,500 by Todd Hartley. Also a Gr.1 victor as a three year-old was Gaultier, winner of the Levin Classic. Purchased for just $NZ17,500, Gaultier is an example of the value that can be found at the NZB Ready to Run Sale. Other Gr.1-winning graduates during the past three seasons include Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock), Atlante, Glorious Days (Hussonet), Linton (Galileo), Nashville (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and Sangster (NZ) (Savabeel). The 2014 edition of the sale has already produced 17 winners with the likes of stakes placegetter Ragnaar (NZ) (Roc de Cambes), who placed in his first two starts as a juvenile including the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes. Trained as a juvenile by New Zealand’s Nigel Tiley, the son of Roc de Cambes is now trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, winning his Australian debut, his first start in his three year-old season. Other successful graduates from last year’s sale include the Jason Warren trained Puritan (Beneteau), a winner on debut who finished fourth in the Danehill Stakes-Gr.2 at his second start. Group performed juvenile Cylinder Beach (NZ) (Showcasing) had four starts as a two year-old, placing in the Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.2 along with finishing fourth in the J.J. Atkins Stakes-Gr.1. Australian buyers have been the leading the charge at NZB’s Ready to Run Sale for the past four years, and last year saw 40 individual buyers from Australia taking home 58 two year-olds from Karaka at a combined spend of
Gaultier on his way to victory in the Gr.1 Levin Classic in January
$NZ5,792,000. Leading Australian buyer at last year’s sale was Bryce Heys, purchasing two juveniles for a total of $610,000. Bryce Heys’ secured the top lot of the sale, a Savabeel colt out of Bling (O’Reilly), for $460,000 from Diamond Lodge. On par with Heys as the leading Australian buyer was Mauro Poletti, taking home three two year-olds for a combined $610,000, buying juveniles by Excellent Art, Not A Single Doubt and Sebring. This year’s catalogue has attracted 397 two year-olds to go under the hammer on November 18 and 19 at Karaka. Represented in the catalogue are 108 juveniles by some of the best sires in Australia and New Zealand. Buyers will also find 44 siblings to stakes-winners including Gr.1 winners Anacheeva, Headturner, Irish Fling, O’Marilyn, Savaria, Titch and Singapore Gr.1 winners Better Life and Spalato, and the progeny of 35 stakes winners including Gr.1-winning dams Cannsea, Imananabaa, Linky Dink, Rostova and Zirna. A diverse selection of New Zealand sires will be represented such as Cape Blanco, Darci Brahma, Iffraaj, Jimmy Choux, Keeper, Makfi, Mastercraftsman, O’Reilly, Pentire, Per Incanto, Pins, Rip Van Winkle, Savabeel, Shocking, Showcasing, Tavistock, Thewayyouare and Thorn Park among many others. Australian-based sires who hold a strong presence include Bel Esprit, Commands, Encosta de Lago, Exceed and Excel, Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge, Hichinbrook, Hussonet, Lonhro, Not a Single Doubt, Sebring and So You Think. Every horse is given the opportunity to Breeze Up at Te Rapa Racecourse, held on October 19 and 20, with the final 200m of their work timed and filmed. Breeze Up clips will be available to view on the NZB website or can be requested on DVD from Tuesday, October 27. New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale of Two Year-Olds will be held on November 18 and 19 at Karaka from 12pm each day with catalogues available now.

2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE
KILGRAVIN LODGE
STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING
Good sires the key to pleasing buyers When putting together his Ready To Run draft, Kilgravin Lodge's Eion Kemp was mindful that he “provide the right sort of product for buyers,” noting “the key to that is horses by the good stallions.” In consequence his draft is a lovely selection of horses by proven stallions (mixed with a few up and comers) including some of those hottest in Australasia at the moment. The “three stars of Waikato, Savabeel, O'Reilly and Pins,” are represented, as are Showcasing, Per Incanto, Hinchinbrook and Beneteau, who have made such great starts to their stud careers. Whilst Showcasing and Per Incanto led the way in last season's New Zealand first season sire charts, Hinchinbrook and Beneteau were one-two in Australia. Highlights of Kilgravin's draft include three by Savabeel, kicking off with Lot 24, a brown gelding out of Queen of Lions (King of Kings), a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner Lion Tamer. Lot 40, who Kemp describes as “a strong, lovely mover who should sell well,” is out of Sable (Danasinga), a nine-times winning half-sister to Listed winner Mary Lavelle. Lot 217 is a colt out of Curbyourenthusiasm (Danasinga), a city-winning daughter of the dual Gr.3 winner Starcent. “He is an athletic, correct horse who has impressed us,” Kemp said. Two fillies by Per Incanto should prove popular, with Lot 100 being the first foal of Today Not Tomorrow (Occidental Tourist), who hails from a high class US family, while Lot 246 is a half-sister to current Singapore star Spalato, from Ellington (Express Duke). “She is one of our highlights, a lovely filly, a very athletic three year-old type.” Lot 232 is from the same family, this gelding by Sakhee's Secret being the first foal of Divine Miss Em (Traditionally), Spalato's half-sister. “He is one of the nicest moving Sakhee's Secrets I’ve seen,” Kemp said. Also by Sakhee's Secret is Lot 177, out of Bond Street (Pentire), whose first to race is the stakes placed Asprey. Kilgravin's Showcasings are worthy of inspection, Lot 154 having as his dam Asaweb (Secret Savings), a half-sister to dual Hong Kong Gr.1 winner Joyful Winner, while Lot 263 is out of Fly to Me (Danzig Connection), a half-sister to Caulfield Cup-Gr.1 (2400m) winner Cole Diesel.
Lot 246 (filly be Per Incanto ex Ellington) is a half-sister to Singapore star Spalato
out of Yarranabbe (Encosta de Lago), a winning daughter of the Gr.3 mare Bella Serata. “He has a lot of presence about him. He is a bit strong boy who is moving through the paces very well.” Kemp is also impressed by the progeny of Mastercraftsman and has two in the sale. Lot 301, from Irish Belle by O’Reilly, is a half-sister to the Telegraph Handicap-Gr.1 (1200m) winner Irish Fling, while Lot 306 is out of the Listed winner Jan Valachi (Kingdom Bay), whose two winners include the Gr.3 placed Secret Agent. Several others in this draft boast immediate black-type in their pedigrees, such as Lot 182 by O'Reilly out of the Listed winner Brianna (Surdurka), while Lot 17 by Pins is a son of dual stakes winner Post Thyme (Postponed). Lot 247, a Testa Rossa gelding, is out of the stakes placed Exceedingly Regal (Exceed and Excel) and Lot 183, by Darci Brahma, is the second foal of stakes placed Bright Abyss (Royal Academy), from the family of US multiple Gr.1 winner Snow Chief. A couple by Rip Van Winkle are also in this draft, Lot 174 from Bizz (Volksraad), is from the family of NZ Derby-Gr.1 (2400m) winner Jolly Jake and Lot 245, a son of the multiple stakes placed city winner Electrostatic (Elnadim),
A gelding by Beneteau (Lot 292) is also well related, his dam Ice Pack (Bite the Bullet) is a half-sister to the triple stakes winner Ain't Seen Nothin', dam of three stakes winners including in-form Singapore galloper Stepitup. “He is a very nice three year-old type, a great walker with plenty of athleticism.” This is the prolific Circles of Gold family and Lot 227 is also a member. This Duporth colt is out of Delorosa (Show a Heart), a half-sister to dual Gr.2 winner Bring Me The Maid. Speaking of great families, Lot 300, by Red Element from In The Past (Zafonic), is a three-quarter brother to the Gr.2winning stallion Domesday, making him a descendant of the influential Best In Show. “He is a lovely big strong type with a huge stride.” Domesday is also represented with Lot 106 from True Charm (Thunder Gulch) being a half-brother to the stakes placed Winged Charm. Lot 127, a colt by Hinchinbrook, is
4
Lot 300, Red Element colt, is a 3/4 brother to Domesday
a half-sister to the stakes winners Coup Ray, Singalong and Penny Arcade. Another young stallion showing promise is Road to Rock who has Lot 350, from Lyford Cay (Montjeu), a half-brother to the Gr.3 winner Ginner Hart, while Jimmy Choux's progeny will also have plenty of fans. His daughter, Lot 135, from Zigalong by Danzighill, is a half-sister to the stakes placed Cannyzing. Lonhro has been in great form this season and he has Lot 230, from Devil’s Song (Stravinsky). This colt is a halfbrother to the Sandown two year-old winner Devil's Harmony and out of a half-sister to NZ Oaks-Gr.1 (2400m) winner Vapour Trail. Pentire is always in form, so there will be plenty of people keen to inspect Lot 130, a colt second foal of Zablonde, a Zabeel daughter of the Gr.3 mare Foxy Blonde. He is a three-quarter brother to recent Gr.1 placegetter Entirely Platinum Other well related youngsters worth inspecting include sons and daughters of Iffraaj (Lot 3, a gelding whose dam Paracetamol (Captain Rio) is a half-sister to triple Group winner Postmans Daughter), Keeper (Lot 74, a colt from Still a Rockstar (Starcraft), whose family produced recent US stakes winner Saritta), Shamoline Warrior (Lot 179, a colt, whose dam Brazen Hussy (Vice Regal) is a half-sister to the stakes winner Ultra Vires), Alamosa (Lot 228, a halfbrother to the stakes placed Sweet as Wilson, from Demerara by Danasinga), Dane Shadow (Lot 262, a son of a multiple city winner Flying Celebrity (Success Express), who has produced the metropolitan winner Disco Dan), Henrythenavigator (Lot 277, the gelded first foal of Grand Vitesse (Fast ‘n Famous), a grandaughter of Ethereal's triple Gr.3-winning dam Romanee Conti), Thorn Park (Lot 287, a filly second foal of High Peak, a High Chaparral mare from the family of Leilani), Hussonet (Lot 295, a colt from Show a Heart mare Imagine Me, from the family of stakes winners Regency, Regal Strike and Rialya), Zacinto (Lot 312, a colt second foal of juvenile winner Julia by Ishiguru), Guillotine (Lot 368 a bay or grey gelding from Missrad (Volksraad). The dam is a half-sister to the stakes winner The Underworld) and Casino Prince (Lot 397, the gelded first foal of Outlook to Success (El Moxie), a halfsister to the speedy stakes winner Follow The Till).

2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE
RTR 2015 hospitality guide In this multicultural City of Sails you will find a strong Pacific-Rim influence, culminating in an exciting blend of flavours combined with farm fresh ingredients. Crayfish tacos at Masu (SKYCITY, Federal St), rotisserie chicken with peanut slaw at newly renovated Euro (Princes Wharf, Viaduct), whole baked terakihi with lemongrass, chilli and coriander at Britomart’s Café Hanoi, and simply the best pork buns at Blue Breeze Inn (Ponsonby) are just a few of the team at NZB’s favourites. Whilst many are repeat visitors to Auckland, we still think there are some hidden gems to uncover. Here are our TOP 5 undiscovered SPOTS.
Rockefeller Champagne & Oyster Bar, Fanshawe St
The Glass Goose, Cnr Federal & Victoria St West
Just a stone’s throw from the Sofitel or a healthy walk from Sebel Suites and Hotel Grand Chancellor, Rockefeller offers a simple menu of fresh oysters – served five ways – complimented by a vast menu of champagne and wine matched with a funky soundtrack. Open from 4pm Tuesday – Saturday. www.rockefelleroysterbar.co.nz
Whilst the waterfront has always been abuzz with bars and restaurants, the city often fell behind. Not so now! Modelled off an urban glass house, this contemporary yet casual eating and drinking space is a true oasis. The view from the rooftop bar gives you a second to none look at the Sky Tower while the grazing menu will have you wondering how you can extend your stay in Auckland! www.glassgoose.co.nz
The Jefferson, Imperial Building, Fort Lane
Woodpecker Hill, Parnell
The Street Food Collective, Ponsonby
At its heart this is a good, old fashioned, whiskey bar. Over 500 whiskies, 150 bourbons, slow cooked ribs, and seasonal cuisine takes it to the next level. The underground speakeasy offers soft lighting, comfortable seating and well-educated, friendly staff. Suitable for both groups and solos - pull up a seat at the bar, chat with the team and let them educate you on their vast array of whiskies. www.thejefferson.co.nz
Parnell is known for its legendary restaurants VBG, Antoine’s and Non Solo Pizza (NSP), but it has been a while since something remarkable opened up here. Now, Woodpecker Hill has stepped in to the breach. You’ll find briskets and beef rib (their speciality), to seafood and beautiful pork cuts all charred, smoked and flame-grilled on chef’s barbeque matched with strong aromatic flavours. Reservations recommended www.woodpeckerhill.co.nz
You’ll probably miss this spot the first time you wander past the dark laneway but tucked behind the shops of Ponsonby Road you’ll find a selection of Auckland’s best food trucks. From waffles to steamed buns and gourmet sandwiches to guilt-free desserts, plus a full service bar, this is a fun spot when you can’t quite decide what you feel like (or want to fuel up before a night out). There are numerous bars in the area we’d be happy to recommend so you can continue your night in style. www.thestreetfoodcollective.co.nz

2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE
Mongolian Khan wins the Gr.1 Australian Derby
our excellent trainers, our jockey, the stable staff and media friends, we could not have gone this far with Mongolian Khan. Also I think I was really lucky to have Mongolian Khan. I have had some great experiences in NZ and I feel that I am always lucky when I am in NZ, more so than other countries, so I will try my best to contribute my efforts to the development of the NZ racing industry.” Q: What is the long-term plan for Mongolian Khan? A: “I hope Mongolian Khan could go to more high-level international races and I would like to stand him in NZ when he retires, so that the fresh blood could be injected into the NZ breeding industry.” Q: Are there any other horses that you have bought from the Ready to Run Sale who you think could be very good? A: “Yes. There is another horse I bought from the Ready to Run Sale at the same time as I bought Mongolian Khan. He is by Iffraaj and he won the Chinese Derby last year by beating many competitive horses from Ireland, Japan and US.” Q: What is going to be your approach to this year’s sale? How many are you predicting you may buy?
MONGOliaN KHaN a Ready to Run Derby success story When Mr Lang Lin of the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group wanted to get involved in Australasian racing he decided that the best place to start was at the NZB Ready to Run Sale of Two Year-Olds. He found immediate success with dual Gr.1 Derby winner Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor (IRE)-Centafit (NZ) by Centaine (AUS)) and has invested heavily in the New Zealand industry.
three years ago and it was a bit easier and faster for us to start with two year-olds but I am also very interested in the yearling sales. Since we are looking to invest more in the NZ racing industry, we might expand our focus to the yearling sales as well in the future.” Q: Mongolian Khan has been a great success story for you, what makes him so good? A: “First of all, I believe that without a great team such as
A: “Rider Horse is planning to buy 10 to 20 two year-olds from this year’s sale. We are also planning to bring some other big horse owners from China, who are capable of buying good horses just like Rider Horse, to the sale.” Q: What is involved in your selection process when buying at the Ready to Run Sale? A: “I look first at the pedigree and conformation as well as the movement at the breeze up.” Q: How important are breeze up times to you? A: “Not that important to me. I always like to look at each horse’s movement instead of the time.” Q: Is there a type of horse that particularly appeals to you? A: “Derby distance horses are my favourites.” Q: When are you back in New Zealand next? And when do you start looking at horses for the Ready to Run Sale? A: “I will be going back to NZ on October 19 and I would’ve started studying the two year-olds by then.”
Here, Mr Lang Lin gives us an insight into why he purchases at the sale and his plans for the future . . . Q: What appeals to you about the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale of Two Year-Olds? A: “The quality of horses is good, and we have found some nice staying types, which we like, plus the price is very fair. Also, NZB does a great job promoting the kiwi-bred and we have found buying horses through NZB very easy. The horses are educated and ready to race, which gives me confidence to buy them and saves the cost of the breaking in process as well.” Q: How long have you been buying at NZB’s Ready to Run Sale? And how many horses have you purchased from the sale? A: “I have been buying at the NZB Ready to Run Sale for two years (2013 and 2014). I have bought 26 two year-olds from this sale.” Q: Do you specifically target this sale? If so, why? A: “Rider Horse Group only entered the NZ racing industry

PHOENIX PARK
STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN
Graduates have a great record Recent Listed winner Bobo So Cute (NZ) (Savabeel (AUS)-Celebes Sea by Shinko King (IRE)) was sold at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready To Run Sale of 2YOs in 2013 and added to the great record of Phoenix Park graduates. The farm has another quality draft at the 2015 sale at Karaka on November 18 and 19 with a good mix of proven and exciting up and coming sires.
Farm’s filly (Lot 261) has plenty of residual value as she is from Flowerdrum (USA) (Mister Baileys), a Gr.2 winner of eight races who is a proven stakes producer. Per Incanto
Redoute’s Choice son Coat’s Choice has four stakes winners already and Phoenix Park will offer two geldings by the sire. Lot 366 is from Miss Benro (Cullen), a half-sister to Portofino Bay, a Listed winner of 11 races. This is the family of Gr.1 winner Srikandi. Lot 197 is from winning mare Cashel Belle (Slavic).
“They are all lovely, correct horses and it is a nicely balanced draft with something for everyone,” Phoenix Park’s Janine Dunlop said. “We expect some lots will make top money, while others will offer great value for buyers.”
Freshman sires have three lots in this draft. Fastnet Rock son Foxwedge has plenty of hype around his stock and already has a trial winner in Australia. His gelding (Lot 107) is from sprint winning mare Trumps (Catrail) and looks the goods. “This juvenile is a real running two year-old type from a great family with the second dam being by Affirmed and the third dam by Caro.”
Champion sire O’Reilly is represented by a colt (Lot 315) from Kablues (Danske), an unraced half-sister to Gr.1 winners Shamrocker and Rock Diva, as well as Gr.2 winner Bohemian Lily. “This colt is a three-quarter brother to Shamrocker and is a classic O’Reilly type,” Janine added. Successful stallion Darci Brahma is represented by a gelding (Lot 194) from Cape Treasure, a winning Cape Cross mare who descends from the family of globetrotting Gr.1 winner Fantastic Light. Janine has high hopes for this fellow and said, “I feel this gelding is the perfect type for the Asian market.” Magnus is having a great run with runners like Winterbottom Stakes-Gr.1 heroine Magnifisio and Phoenix
started his career in fine fashion with a two year-old Gr.1 winner last season and his gelding (Lot 208) is the first foal from winning mare City Class Rose (City on a Hill); while Thewayyouare is a Champion First Season Sire and has a gelding (Lot 242) from Effloresce (Montjeu) who is from the family of Scenic.
On offer will be a 3/4 brother to Shamrocker by O’Reilly
Fellow Australian speedster Bullbars has a colt (Lot 93) and he should appeal to the Asian market as his dam Te Toro Lass (Ekraar) won eight races and is from the family of Singapore Horse of the Year Ouzo. The dual Gr.1 winner Cape Blanco has a colt (Lot 195) from Carib, a multiple winning Montjeu mare, giving him a 3mx3m cross to champion sire Sadler’s Wells. This is the family of leading stayers Horlicks, Brew and My Tusker.

2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE
RIVERSLEY PARK
STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN
Strong draft provides buyers with wide choice Sam Beatson’s Riversley Park represents a fresh start for the Ohaupo-based operation. Previously part of the Beatson Stables partnership, Sam has branched out on his own with Riversley Park, concentrating on breaking in, education of young horses and preparing horses for the Ready to Run Sale. In his first draft under the Riversley Park banner, Sam brings a strong group of 24 horses to the November sale. “This is a nice bunch of horses and they will suit a wide range of trainers, some are precocious and others will suit trainers and owners with patience,” he said. Recently crowned NZ Champion Sire, Savabeel has two lots in this draft, including a colt (Lot 61) from Sotela (Commands) who Sam says is a “big, strong, powerful horse with a great action”. Sotela is a half-sister to Group winners Sports (16 wins, two Gr.1), Seika and Medals. The other Savabeel is also a colt (Lot 71) and is from Stella Livia (by the Machiavellian son Titus Livius), who is a winning half-sister to Germany’s Horse of the Year Ransom O’War (Red Ransom-Sombreffe by Polish Precedent). Champion Sire O’Reilly has a gelding (Lot 181) from Breezy (Pins), a Gr.3 winner of five races who is one of three stakes winners for her Gr.2 winning dam Zephyr Magic; while fellow Waikato Stud resident, the Australian Guineas-Gr.1 winner Pins (Snippets), is the sire of a halfbrother (Lot 5) to Listed winner Taameer (General Nediym), both from 1100m winner Pedante (Danehill)). Waikato Draught Sprint-Gr.1 winner and boom young sire Tavistock (Montjeu), the sire of Gr.1 winner Volkstok’n’barrell, has three lots in this draft; a gelding (Lot 98) out of stakes placed Tief (Viking Ruler) from the family of Surround, a colt (Lot 75) from Strabelle (Stravinsky), from the family of VRC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 winner Wonder Dancer and a gelding (Lot 161) from Bantry Bay (Viking Ruler), who boasts the presence of Empire Rose in his immediate pedigree. Proven Gr.1 sire Per Incanto has four lots in this draft, headlined by a colt (Lot 32) who is a half-brother to stakes placed Regency Horse (Stravinsky), from multiple winner Rivertaine (Centaine), dam of eight winners including Gr.1 placed Coup Stravinsky and from from the family of Gr.1 winners Legs and Guyno. The gelding (Lot 157) is out Baillieborough (Towkay) whose first foal is already a winner. A filly (Lot 255) is from Figuig (Star Way), who is a half sister to Gr.1 placed Figueres, while a gelding (Lot 18) is the first foal of Princess Alexandra (Towkay) whose dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr.3 winner Igauzu (second dam of Sacred Falls).
Riversley Park will offer two colts by Champion Sire Savabeel
For buyers who want to take a punt on a freshman sire, Riversley Park has four lots to choose from, two of them by Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 winner Skilled (Commands). A colt (Lot 11) is out of the winning Pins mare Pinsofjoy, who boasts Gr.1 winner The Pooka in his immediate family. The other by Skilled is a gelding (Lot 390) from a three-quarter sister to O’Lonhro in Oh What a Song (Octagonal). Among the many Group winners in the family is emerging sire I Am Invincible.
Other proven sires in this draft include Gallant Guru, whose colt (Lot 16) out of four race winner Politic (Corrupt) is from a good running family; and Raise the Flag whose gelding (Lot 169) is the first foal of a winning mare Bellishi (Ishiguru).
Smart Missile had buyers talking at the yearling sales earlier this year, and they can view his colt (Lot 115) out of imported two year-old winner Venetian Lady (Woodman) in this draft. Sam says the colt has “natural ability, heaps of strength and is a precocious, ready to go type.”
Australian proven sires with representatives in this draft include Sebring, whose colt (Lot 351) is out of the winner Madame Medusa (Mozart) and from the family of champion sire Scenic. Written Tycoon has a colt (Lot 336) out of Gr.3 winner La Rumba (Centaine), who has left five winners of 22 races. Testa Rossa has a colt (Lot 357) from
The other colt (Lot 383) who has impressed, is by Sepoy from Night at the Opera (Good Journey). “A strong running type with a great attitude,” he is the second foal of his stakes placed dam, whose dam is also stakes placed and is from the family of Easter Handicap-Gr.1 winner Viadana (Towkay).

2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE
WESTBURY STUD
STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING
Youngsters selected with this sale in mind mare Dance Partner and Lot 274, a colt from the Thorn Park-sired juvenile winner Goldie Thorn. This colt’s dam is a half-sister to the stakes winners Upham, Bonnie Mac, Gold Rum and Intimate Moment and Lot 333, a colt out of the Silver Hawk mare Lalla, making him a half- brother to the winners Poetic Licence and Suarez.
Westbury Stud's Russell Warwick could not be happier with the “diverse range of sires represented” in his Ready To Run draft and noted, “a number of these two year-olds have been specifically targeted for this very successful sale”. The Westbury lots are sure to command attention at Karaka when NZB’s two-day sale gets underway on November 18. Warwick has been very pleased by the “extremely good start” Westbury resident and Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner Swiss Ace (Secret Savings (USA)-Rapid Serve (USA) by Carson City) has made to his stud career and three of his seven Ready To Run offerings will be offered by Westbury. “Lot 7 is the first to enter the ring and is a good moving colt from Perfect Silhouette, a More Than Ready half-sister to Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1 (1200m) winner Catbird as well as the Pago Pago Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m) winner Danbird. The family is one of great speed with second dam Fitting winning the AJC Gimcrack Stakes-LR (1000m). “Swiss Ace has made an excellent start to his stud career with the Gr.3 horses Passing Shot, and Mywayorthehighway, now being joined in that Gr.3 category by Secret Spirit following her win in the Bonecrusher Stakes at Ellerslie, the Gr.1 placed Huka Eagle as well as the stakes performing horses The Dom, Starlight Angel and Lucky Edie.” Warwick said. Swiss Ace has also started well in Asia with numerous winners in Singapore including the unbeaten Golden Sword, Scout Done, Federer, Clip the Ticket and Proud Pinnoy, while in Hong Kong the Danny Shum-trained Athena Baby won three races in succession at the end of last season. The remaining Swiss Ace colts are Lot 234, out of the multiple city winner Donna Rossa (Testa Rossa), whose five wins were from 1000m-2100m, and Lot 375, a colt from the More Than Ready mare More Than Sassy, who hails from the immediate family of Centaurea, Magari, Chiliad, Interiors and Night Sky. The evergreen champion stallion Encosta de Lago has Lot 136, “a very nice colt” out of the Gr.1 winner Zirna (Deputy Govenor). He is a half-brother to five winners including the Adrian Knox Stakes-Gr.3 (2000m) heroine Crafty Irna (Starcraft). “Encosta de Lago has been a champion sire from his Coolmore base with 106 stakes winners including Australia’s current sprinting star Chautauqua. The colt’s
“We also have two smart colts by the Giant’s Causewaysired US Gr.1 winner Red Giant. Lot 55, out of the Danehill mare Show Exhibit, is a half-brother to four winners. His third dam is a sister to the outstanding racehorses and stallions El Gran Senor and Try My Best. This is of course the prolific Best In Show family that has enjoyed such great success in this part of the world with Redoute's Choice its most famous member. Lot 55 is also closely related to the international Group winners Castle Gandolfo, Blu Air Force, Dr Johnson and Fusaichi Pandora.” Swiss Ace has three colts in the Westbury Stud draft
dam Zirna was a Gr.1 winner of seven races, banking just short of $1.5m in stakes and earning the title of 2003 Horse of The Year in Singapore.” Westbury's exciting young stallion Redwood, a Gr.1winning son of High Chaparral, has nine horses in the sale including four in the stud’s draft with Lot 116 being the first foal for the Fastnet Rock mare Veva Girl, a daughter of the stakes winning and Gr.1 placed two year-old Barawin (Barathea). This juvenile gelding is inbred 3mx4m to champion sire Sadler’s Wells. “Redwood made a very good impression with his first crop yearlings in January,” Warwick said. “They sold for upwards of $200,000, catching the eye of leading trainers Peter Moody, Liam Birchley, Michael Freedman, Murray Baker, Donna Logan, Shaune Ritchie, Henry Dwyer, Graham Richardson, Michael Moroney, David Haworth, Alan Sharrock, Graeme Sanders, Graeme Rogerson and Karen Zimmerman.” A winner over 1600m at his only start at two, Redwood (ex Aurum Lily by Woodman) was a stakes winner at his second start before going on to win $US2.3m in stakes. Redwood enjoyed his career highlight with a win in the Northern Dancer Stakes-Gr.1 (12f) and he was also runnerup in the Hong Kong Vase-Gr.1 (2400m) and Dubai’s Sheema Classic-Gr.1 (2400m). Among the remaining two year-olds by Redwood are Lot 220, “a quality filly” from the winning Danehill Dancer
Lot 145 is another son of Red Giant and is from city winner All The Gloss (Quest For Fame). This two year-old is a brother to the dual Singapore winner Tip of Borneo and a half-brother to the multiple Australian winner Idle Chat. He is a grandson of the Gr.1 placed Confer (Danehill), whose dam is the VRC and AJC Oaks placed Gr.3 winner Shackle (Luskin Star). “His dam is a half-sister to the smart South Australian sprinter Nite Rocker,” Warwick said, noting this is also the family of Australian Horse of The Year Research. Proven sire Postponed (Summer Squall) is represented by four colts in the Westbury draft including Lot 35, “a well balanced colt” out of Romantic Glow (Orientate), a halfsister to the stakes winners New Image, Ideal Image and Elusive Image. Lot 190, a Postponed colt out of the Encosta de Lago mare Buttonhook, is a half-brother to the capable Singapore performer Lucky Dapper, while Lot 364, a colt from Miscellanea (Vettori), is a half- brother to the stakes winner Not Now Norman and to the “very promising” Swiss Ace gelding Athena Baby. Lot 377 is another Postponed colt and his dam is Mrs Petrov (King’s Best), a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner Landsighting and the triple Listed winner Danzylum. “We have several other proven stallions represented including Pentire (Lot 203, a gelding from stakes producing Zabeel mare Charmeel), Stravinsky (Lot 387, a colt from winner Nova by Almutawakel), Testa Rossa (Lot 276, a colt from Gould by Danehill Dancer) and Coat’s Choice (Lot 160, a gelding from multiple winner Band of Stars by My Halo).

2015 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE
STATISTICS
APEX RATINGS FOR NEW ZEALAND Highly respected pedigree analyst Bill Oppenheim, formerly of the USA but now resident in Perthsire Scotland, was among the many thoroughbred commentators who felt that there were serious shortcomings in traditional sire lists. However, Bill decided to do something about the situation, so a decade or more ago he developed the first APEX-Annual Progeny Earnings index ratings, which have now become almost universally accepted as one of the best and most reliable indicators of stallion performance. They were not available in Australia until 2006, but with Bill’s kind permission and through our joint venture with The Australian Bloodhorse Review, Bloodhound is now able to present APEX ratings for many countries. Oppenheim decided to divide the population of prizemoney earners in a particular season in each jurisdiction, or country, into three bands. The top 2% of earners are the “A runners” , the next 2% are the “B runners” and the next 4% are the “C runners” . In other words the A+B+C runners combined make up the top 8% (2+2+4) of earners in a particular jurisdiction, country, each season. This masterstroke achieves a number of objectives in one. It largely removes the bias in prizemoney based lists created by a relatively small number of very rich races. It largely removes the regional and political element of stakes races which could be either a regional bias or a national one. Finally it helps to compare stallion merit across jurisdictions, or countries, with vastly differing prizemoney levels. The ratings are calculated in the following way. “A” runners are the top 2% of prizemoney earners in a season, so if a particular stallion has 2% of his runners in a particular period among the top 2% of earners his APEX A rating figure for that period is 1. If he has 10% of his runners among the top 2% his APEX A rating figure is 5. “AB” runners are the top 4%
of earners so if a stallion has 4% of his runners among the top 4% of earners his “APEX AB rating figure is 1. “ABC” runners are the top 8% so if a stallion has 8% of his runners among the top 8% of earners his “APEX ABC” rating is 1. If he had 16% of his runners among the top 8% his APEX ABC rating would be 2. And so on. The ratings can be done in any band individually or in any combination. To give you an idea as to what standard of horses are included in the ratings, in the 2005/06 season in Australia the top 2% of runners earned over $93,300, the next 2% of runners earned between $55,450 and $93,300 and the next 4% of runners earned between $30,640 and $55,450. In the 2005/06 Australian racing Season there were 31,193 runners, which means there were 619 “A” Runners (2%), 1237 “A+B” runners and 2475 “A+B+C” runners. In addition to the earnings, to qualify for a rating on the main list a stallion must have a predetermined minimum number of starters across a seven year band. The most commonly published lists are based on a minimum of what are called “150 year starters”. If a runner by a particular stallion earns prizemoney in each of the seven years under review he will count as 7 of the 150 “year starters”. Lists can be compiled for a smaller number of starters, also for first and second year sires etc. but will of necessity be less accurate than the main list. So, with APEX ratings, as with any type of sire lists, some skill in interpretation is still required. Perhaps the main thing to be aware of is that some young sires and some sires with limited numbers of runners will not necessarily appear on the lists at all. This does not mean they are not good sires, because when they do make the list, i.e. qualify with sufficient “year starters”, they might very well enter at, or near, the top.
