2 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2015

Thanks to the team at Bluebloods, the New Zealand Sires 2015 edition will be of great interest to all Kiwi thoroughbred breeders as they plan their matings for the new season. The New Zealand-bred thoroughbred has continued to succeed at the highest level of international competition during the past year, winning Gr.1 races in all our major markets. These results are essential to maintain the integrity of our Group and Listed races on the domestic front as well as attracting the strongest possible buying bench to New Zealand Bloodstock’s Yearling Sales at Karaka each summer. Good luck to all stallion owners and broodmare owners for a successful season. May the decisions you make for the 2015 breeding season result in rewarding your endeavours by producing quality thoroughbred horses to enhance the New Zealand breeding industry’s long-standing reputation of excellence. Michael Martin Chief Executive New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association

ANOTHER CLASSIC SEASON

FOR KIWIS

below Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) wins the 2015 Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas

The Australian racing season has come to a close and once again there has been a strong influence on Gr.1 racing from abroad, most significantly New Zealand. Kiwi bred horses account for the most Gr.1 winners and wins in Australia out of all horses who were bred internationally.

N

EW ZEALAND bred or sold horses won 11 Gr.1 races in Australia in the 2014-15 season, despite kiwi-bred horses making up just 5.5% of the racing population. The impact of NZ-bred horses was felt most in the three year-old ranks with NZ bred or sold horses responsible for 35% of all three year-old Gr.1 races in the past five seasons. It is when New Zealand three year-olds get up to 2000m and beyond that we see them start to dominate. In the past five seasons kiwi three year-olds have won 45% of Gr.1 races at 2000m and above in Australia. The 2014-15 season saw five Gr.1 winners who were either bred or sold in New Zealand win ‘classic’ Gr.1 races at 2000m and above.

Continuing the great record of NZ three year-olds in the Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1 was Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock). With his triumph in the 2000m feature this year he becomes the seventh NZ-bred winner of the race in the past eight years, including the past three straight. Narrowing it down even more, there is one particular type of race in which the New Zealanders have an impressive record and that is Gr.1 Derbys in Australia. Again, the past five seasons has seen 45% of Gr.1 Derbys in Australia won by New Zealand bred or sold horses, including two in 2014-15. The first Derby winner came in the spring with Preferment (NZ) (Zabeel) breaking his maiden the best way possible, with victory in the Victoria DerbyGr.1 (2500m). The son of champion sire Zabeel, trained by ex-pat New Zealander Chris Waller, then formed a NZ quinella in the autumn when finishing second to Volkstok’n’barrell in the Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1. Since the Victoria Derby was raised to Gr.1 status in 1979, New Zealand bred horses have had a strong presence, winning 50% of the races. The second Derby winner was Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) in the Australian Derby-Gr.1. Australian bred, but twice sold at Karaka, firstly as a yearling at the Karaka Select Sale then as a two year-old at the Ready to Run Sale, Mongolian Khan is trained in New Zealand by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. In winning the Australian Derby this year, Mongolian Khan becomes the seventh horse in the past nine years who was bred or sold in New Zealand to win Sydney’s premier three year-old staying race. It wasn’t just the colts who excelled in classic races, NZ fillies were also prominent in Australian Gr.1 races. The John Sargent-trained Gust of Wind (NZ) (Darci Brahma) was victorious in the Australian Oaks-Gr.1, the same race won by fellow New Zealand filly Rising Romance (NZ) (Ekraar) the year before. Sargent can now lay claim to winning the Victoria Oaks-Gr.1, Australian Oaks-Gr.1 and Queensland Oaks-Gr.1, all with New Zealand fillies. Adding to the quality crop of three year-olds from New Zealand was Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo), who defeated the older horses in the Doncaster Mile-Gr.1. The win by the Chris Waller-trained colt was the fourth straight success by a New

Zealand bred horse in Australia’s richest mile handicap and the seventh victory in eight years for the NZ suffix. The 2014 Australian Derby winner Criterion (NZ) (Sebring) returned as a four year-old to claim the Queen Elizabeth Stakes-Gr.1 a year after his first Gr.1 victory, following Dundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral) who completed the same double the previous year. The wins of Mongolian Khan, Gust of Wind, Kermadec and Criterion meant New Zealand bred or sold horses won half of the Gr.1 races at The Championships this season, the most of any country. The haul of four Gr.1 wins at the two-day carnival mirrored the previous year’s result where the same four races were won by kiwi gallopers. Adding strength to the filly ranks this season was First Seal (Fastnet Rock), an Australian bred graduate of NZB’s Karaka Premier Sale, who was triumphant in the Flight Stakes-Gr.1. New Zealand bred or sold fillies have won 34% of three year-old Gr.1 races for fillies in Australia in the past five years. Dual Doncaster Mile-Gr.1 hero Sacred Falls (NZ) (O’Reilly) showed his class by adding another Gr.1 feature mile race at Randwick to his résumé. The son of champion sire O’Reilly, won the George Main Stakes-Gr.1 in the spring, the fourth Gr.1 win of his career. The Gr.1-winning three year-old Lucia Valentina (NZ) (Savabeel) made the jump to open company in style with a dominant win in the Turnbull StakesGr.1. The daughter of Savabeel enjoyed a good spring, finishing an unlucky third in the Caulfield Cup-Gr.1 as well. Another daughter of Savabeel also tasted Gr.1 success this season with kiwi juvenile Pasadena Girl (NZ) (Savabeel) winning the Champagne Stakes-Gr.1. The remaining Gr.1 winner from New Zealand this season was Suavito (NZ) (Thorn Park) who enjoyed a stellar season, winning five races including the Futurity Stakes-Gr.1, defeating likely Horse of the Year, Dissident. Of the 11 Gr.1 winners to come from New Zealand, eight of them were sold through New Zealand Bloodstock. The next Sale held at Karaka is the Ready to Run Sale of 2YO in November before the National Yearling Sales Series in January.

WILL HAvE bREEdERS SpOILT FOR CHOICE

STORY BY PAUL VETTISE & KRISTEN MANNING

New Zealand’s new boys of 2015-16 are a classy lot and broodmare owners will be spoilt for choice. The first season sires include sons of notable stallions Fastnet Rock, O’Reilly, Invincible Spirit, Shamardal, Giant’s Causeway, Choisir, Sir Percy and Volksraad. Here is our run down of the 10 first season sires, starting off with the dual Doncaster Mile-Gr.1 winner Sacred Falls, who is bred on a cross of champion sires O’Reilly and Redoute’s Choice.

SACRED FALLS The latest addition to the Waikato Stud stallion roster is a wish come true for the Matamata farm. “We’ve always wanted to stand O’Reilly’s best son and this season we will be doing so with the brilliant four-time Gr.1 winner Sacred Falls,” principal Mark Chittick said. “We identified Sacred Falls early in his career and it has been hugely exciting to have subsequently been a part of his two Doncasters and George Main successes with co-owner Dato Yap and the Raffles Racing team.” Sacred Falls (ex Iguazu’s Girl by Redoute’s Choice) left New Zealand as the unbeaten winner of six races, including the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1, under the guidance of Tony Pike and his then training partner Mark Donoghue. He subsequently raced his way into Australia’s history books as the first colt in more than 50 years to record back-to-back wins in the Doncaster Mile for champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller. Sacred Falls backed up a week after his second triumph in the Randwick mile to finish runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes-Gr.1. The entire registered the fourth Gr.1 win of his career in the George Main Stakes, confirming his position as Australia’s leading miler and the highest rated horse in Australia on the official handicaps at that time. By Gr.1 winner and multiple Champion NZ Sire O’Reilly (Last Tycoon), Sacred Falls is out of a speedy winning daughter of Champion Australian Sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and his second dam is the top class NZ filly Iguazu (Carolingian), a multiple Gr.3 winner and also dam of Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Splashing Out (O’Reilly). Next dam is by Centaine. Iguazu’s Girl carries a 4mx3m cross of Bletchingly.

Sacred Falls

6 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2015

“With nine career wins from 1000m-1600m generating $A4.7m in earnings, Sacred Falls would surely rate as the highest stakes earner to retire to stud in New Zealand,” Chittick said. “He fits squarely within Waikato Stud’s proven sire selection criteria of having Gr.1 ability with an electric turn of foot,” Chittick said. To stand his first season at $30,000 + GST, Sacred Falls will take up residence in the box of his late father, O’Reilly.

CHARM SPIRIT Windsor Park Stud has added a blend of European charm and Gr.1 quality to its stallion roster for 2015. The Cambridge farm has secured Charm Spirit (IRE), the highest-earning son of the internationally successful stallion Invincible Spirit (IRE), for the coming breeding season. Charm Spirit (ex l’Enjoleuse by Montjeu (IRE)) was a juvenile winner in France and also finished third in the Jean-Luc Lagardere-Gr.1 before he returned for an outstanding three year-old season. He won five of his six starts for trainer Freddy Head with a closing career hat-trick of Gr.1 wins in the Prix Jean Prat, the Prix Moulin de Longchamp and in the Ascot Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He had also previously claimed the Prix Djebel-Gr.3 and finished fifth in the English 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 and retired with six wins and two placings from his nine appearances. “Charm Spirit is a cracking stallion prospect and we’re very proud to join with Sheikh Fahad and the Royal Family of Qatar to make him available on our stallion roster,” Windsor Park Stud co-owner Rodney Schick said. “It’s a real coup for New Zealand as well to get a horse of this calibre, a lot of Australian studs were after him.

Charm Spirit

FIRST SEASON SIRES | NEW BOYS WILL HAVE BREEDERS SPOILT FOR CHOICE “We have been looking for a stallion with the right race record, pedigree and physicality. In Charm Spirit, I believe we’ve found that horse, one who will particularly suit the Australasian conditions and market place where his sire line is performing so well.” Champion stallion Invincible Spirit’s sire sons include I Am Invincible, whose oldest progeny include the Newmarket Handicap-Gr.1 winner Brazen Beau, recently syndicated for $A10m. Out of the winning Montjeu mare l’Enjoleuse, Charm Spirit is from the family of champion Australian sire Encosta de Lago and the Gr.1 sire Holy Roman Emperor and his fourth dam is Ciboulette (dam of Fanfreluche) and his third dam is Somfas, who is the dam of Brazen Beau’s dam sire Snaadee (USA). Leading New Zealand bloodstock agent Bruce Perry inspected Charm Spirit in Europe late last year and he described the stallion as a magnificent individual with a great temperament. Perry subsequently approached Qatar Racing manager David Redvers to help him secure the stallion. “Charm Spirit gave Sheikh Fahad, his brothers and father Sheikh Abdullah their greatest ever day on a racecourse when winning the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot,” Redvers said. “He is one of the most exciting horses in the world to retire this year, and we are delighted to continue to support the New Zealand industry by sending him to Windsor Park.” Charm Spirit will stand for a service fee of $25,000 + GST with a Live Foal Guarantee.

ATLANTE Atlante (AUS) (Fastnet Rock-Readyforcatherine by More Than Ready (USA)) is back where he made his Gr.1 name ahead of a career at stud in 2015-16. The son of Fastnet Rock did some work at the Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman following his return from Australia and the finalisation of a deal that will see him stand at Mapperley Stud in 2015. “He went to Murray’s place as a young horse and to be sitting in a paddock for months after his return to NZ wouldn’t have been the best thing for him,” studmaster Simms Davison said. Atlante won the Listed Holloway Stakes for Baker and Forsman off the back of a maiden success and then triumphed in the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 at his fifth appearance. A Sydney campaign followed and an encouraging start with a runner-up finish in the Hobartville Stakes-Gr.2 at Rosehill was subsequently hindered by wet tracks. Atlante later joined Team Hawkes and won the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes at Moonee Valley. “I’ve always kept a very close eye on this horse and he showed so much raw ability,” Davison said. “He ran second to Dissident in the Hobartville and he came back as a four year-old to beat Trust In A Gust, who then went on to win the Sir Rupert Clarke and the Toorak. Atlante is an athlete and is a fantastic looking horse. He’s lightly raced and he was an easy horse to sell shares in.” Mapperley Stud has been joined in Atlante in a syndicate that includes former major stakeholder Lib Petagna and prominent breeders Graham Bax, James Chapman, Mark Chittick, Kevin Hickman, Brendan Lindsay, Tony Ryder, Rodney Schick, Sam Williams and Sir Peter Vela. Atlante, who will stand alongside NJC Newmarket Handicap-Gr.3 winner He’s Remarkable (NZ)

(Pentire (GB)-Axiom by Zabeel), is out of the Group-performed More Than Ready mare Readyforcatherine a daughter of the Kingmambo mare Rosa Carolina and from the family of Jeune. “He was originally bought by Mark and Shelley Treweek at the Sydney Sale as a pin-hook and they are very good at what they do,” Davison said. “Bruce Perry then bought into him on behalf of Lib, so to have great judges like them involved was proof of what a great type of horse he is.”

GHIBELLINES A lengthy search for the ideal addition to the White Robe Lodge stallion roster has ended successfully. The leading South Island farm’s patience has been rewarded with their dream signing of the well-related Gr.2 winner Ghibellines (AUS) (Shamardal (USA)-Camarilla by Elusive Quality (USA)). The rising four year-old is a lightly-raced son of the international Gr.1 winner and sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway (USA)), sire of the Hong Kong champion Able Friend, and he was secured in a deal brokered by the respected Auckland bloodstock agent Michael Otto. “We’ve been looking for a horse like this for a long time,” studmaster Wayne Stewart said. “He was secured for us by Michael, who also got Yamanin Vital for the stud many years ago. “Ghibellines is a magnificent looking type out of one of Australia’s best families and he’s got the race record as well.” His dam is the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1 winner Camarilla, a daughter of Elusive Quality. She has a perfect record at stud with all four of her foals to race have having been successful. Ghibellines is a half-brother to the crack filly Guelph, winner of the Gr.1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Champagne Stakes, Flight Stakes and the 1000 Guineas, and the winners Dazzler and Inner Circle, also a Group performer. Out of the Queensland Derby-Gr.1 winner Camarena, Camarilla is a sister to the Listed Geelong Classic winner and VRC Derby-Gr.1 runner-up Induna and a blood sister to the champion two and three year-old colt Sepoy. Sepoy has made a sensational start to his stud career and created history at this year’s Sydney Easter Sale when a colt sold for $A1.6m, a record price for a yearling by a first season sire sold at public auction in Australia. Also featuring in the family is the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner and influential stallion Canny Lad. “Ghibellines has got a fantastic pedigree and it’s a great opportunity for breeders to access a horse of his standing,” Stewart said. Lightly-tried with only eight starts, Ghibelline’s career best performance came in the Todman Slipper Trial-Gr.2 in which he defeated the Magic Millions Classic winner Unencumbered. He was also placed at Listed level in the Canonbury Stakes and the Breeders’ Plate from Peter Snowden’s stable before he finished third in the Danehill Stakes-Gr.2 after joining John O’Shea. Ghibellines will stand at an introductory fee in 2015 of $5000 + GST at the Anderton family’s successful Mosgiel operation alongside Gallant Guru (AUS) (Montjeu (IRE)-Proud Halo by Don’t Say Halo (USA)) and Raise The Flag (GB) (Sadler’s Wells-Hasili by Kahyasi).

GIANT’S STEPS A Cambridge nursery has secured a South American relative of their successful resident sire Ekraar for the new breeding season. Linwood Park Stud will be home in 2015 to Giant’s Steps (ARG) (Giant’s Causeway (USA)-Hamsaat Hi Haat by Hennessy (USA)), the Champion Three Year-Old colt of Chile in 2012-13 who is also from the family of Hussonet. “With Ekraar having been such a success story for Linwood Park and Hussonet a champion sire in Australia, it is perfect timing for us to acquire Giant’s Steps who has the same female family,” Linwood Park Stud manager Tony Mudgway said. “It is undoubtedly one of the best stallion families in the stud book today. Not only does he possess a wonderful pedigree, but he showed an amazing turn of foot on the racetrack which saw him achieve success at the highest level.”

Trained by Patricio Baeza, Giant’s Steps is the dual Gr.1 winner of the Premio El Ensayo Mega (2400m) and the Classico Polla de Potrillos (1700m) as well as the Gran Clasico Coronacion-Gr.2 (2000m), all on turf. He is out of the Hennessy mare Hamsaat Hi Haat, while his third dam is the champion American filly Sachuista (Raja Baba), the dam of Hussonet (Mr. Prospector) and Ekraar (Red Ransom (USA)). Hussonet was a champion sire in Chile who subsequently made his Gr.1 mark in Australia, most notably through his top-class son Weekend Hussler, while Ekraar has left the elite level winners Habibi, Ekstreme, Shez Sinsational and Rising Romance. PROISIR A star Australian three year-old will begin the second phase of his career at Rich Hill Stud in 2015. The leading Waikato nursery has secured Group winner Proisir, a son of the leading international Gr.1 winner and sire Choisir (Danehill Dancer (IRE)). Under the care of the champion Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse, Proisir (Proisir (AUS) (ex Prophet Jewel by Encosta de Lago) won his first two starts in commanding style before he distanced his rivals by six lengths in the Spring Stakes-Gr.3 at Newcastle. The colt then stepped straight up to Gr.1 company to finish a close second behind the 2014 New Zealand Horse of the Year Dundeel in the Spring Champion Stakes. He rounded off his first preparation with a creditable midfield finish, the only unplaced start of his career, in the Cox Plate-Gr.1 behind Ocean Park. Proisir kicked off an ambitious autumn program with a third placing in the Hobartville Stakes-Gr.2 behind multiple Gr.1 performers Pierro and Rebel Dane. He again showcased his Gr.1 credentials pushing Dundeel close when runner-up in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1. The quality of this field was exceptional with top-flight gallopers Rebel Dane, Ferlax, and Sacred Falls finishing behind him. At this stage Proisir was considered a racetrack star, but unfortunately he was sidelined by injury. After a rehabilitation period he joined Peter and Paul Snowdon’s stable. He trialled brilliantly in late 2014, but a decision was made to retire him after a recurrence of the injury. After a call from bloodstock agent Michael Otto to alert him to the stallion’s availability, Rich Hill’s John Thompson was on the first flight to Sydney to inspect the five year-old. “Proisir was a legitimate Gr.1 performer and fortunately he has the looks and pedigree to complete a quality package,” Thompson said. His sire Choisir has been a worldwide success story for Australian racing and Coolmore Stud. Choisir’s champion sprinter Starspangledbanner has made a sensational start to his career in both hemispheres despite fertility issues. Proisir’s dam is a multiple winning mare by champion sire Encosta de Lago and his second dam is by champion sire Centaine, so he possesses all the genetic ingredients to make a successful sire. He will be a very valuable

addition to the New Zealand stallion ranks. Proisir was raced by Tony and Mario Falcone and they have kept an interest in the stallion’s ownership so they can assist in the next phase of his career. The remaining shares in Proisir are being syndicated among leading New Zealand breeders, with a limited number available. Proisir will stand at Rich Hill alongside Pentire (GB) (Be My Guest-Gull Nook by Mill Reef), Melbourne Cup winner Shocking (AUS) (Street Cry (IRE)-Maria di Castiglia (GB) by Danehill (USA)) and five-time Gr.1 winner Jimmy Choux (NZ) (Thorn Park (AUS)-Cierzo by Centaine (AUS)) at an introductory fee of $7000 + GST with a live foal guarantee.

PURE CHAMPION Totara Park Stud’s owners weren’t in the market for another stallion until they laid eyes on Pure Champion (IRE) (Footstepsinthesand (GB)-Castara Beach (IRE) by Danehill (USA)). First impressions counted for everything, and the handsome Gr.1 winner will stand his first season at the Whangarei operation of Les Donaldson and his daughter and son-in-law, Nicci and Dirk Oberholster. “We had no intention of getting another stallion, but Pure Champion is such a magnificent looking horse, kind and genuine with the most beautiful walk and a great pedigree,” Dirk Oberholster said. “We all know what the Europeanbred horses have come down and done to our stayers here, so we’re excited to have a horse of this quality and performance.” An Irish-bred son of the English 2000 Guineas winner and Gr.1 sire Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway (USA)), Pure Champion is out of the Danehill mare Castara Beach (ex Sea Harrier by Grundy), a half-sister to imported Gr.1 winner Water Boatman (IRE) (Main Reef). This family has made an international impact with Gr.1-winning members including the champion English miler Nannina, Hong Kong Horse of the Year Indigenous, Sydney Cup winner Jessicabeel, Adelaide Cup winner Water Boatman and Fenomeno who headed the extended 2013 world thoroughbred rankings, as well as successful sire Sea Anchor. Pure Champion (who also raced as Steinbeck) began his career in his native Ireland where he won the Solonaway Stakes-Gr.3, the Listed Ruby Stakes and ran Gr.1 fourths in the Dewhurst Stakes and the Irish 2000 Guineas before he continued his career in Hong Kong. He was the multiple stakes winner there of the January Cup and the Centenary Vase and also runner-up to Military Attack in the Hong Kong Gold Cup-Gr.1. Pure Champion subsequently raced six times in New Zealand as an eight year-old and despite his Windsor Park Plate-Gr.1 success, victory in the Manawatu Challenge Stakes-Gr.3 and a placing in the Makfi Challenge Stakes-Gr.1, co-trainer Lance O’Sullivan still wonders what might have been. “We basically got him after he had been retired,” he said. “Who knows what he might have done if we had him two or three years earlier. He still did an outstanding job and he’s a beautiful animal who deserves his chance at stud.” The O’Sullivan family raced Pure Champion in New Zealand and they have entered into a shared ownership agreement with Totara Park in the stallion, who will stand the 2015 season alongside associate sire Buffalo Man (CAN) (El PradoPerfect Six by Saratoga Six) at a fee of $5000 + GST.

EL ROCA With the success of Hinchinbrook, Stryker, Wanted and Rothesay sons of Fastnet Rock are in demand and Westbury Stud is standing one of the classiest and most consistent three year-olds of the 2013-14 season, the dual Listed and dual Gr.1 placegetter El Roca (AUS) (ex Rubimill by Rubiton). A two length winner of the Listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes (1200m) before heading to Australia he raced with distinction, but not always with a lot of luck. He was badly held up for runs when a close-up fifth in the Caulfield GuineasGr.1 (1600m) and found rain affected tracks in Sydney. However El Roca mixed it with the best of them, taking out the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) and during his 12-start career beating home the likes of Dissident, Atlante, Long John, Eurozone, Criterion, Romantic Touch, Sacred Falls, Toydini, Boban, Red Tracer, Terravista, Streama and Fat Al. Bred on the same Danehill-Century cross as NZ and AJC Derby hero Mongolian Khan and 12 other Gr.1 winners, El Roca is one of Fastnet Rock’s 78 stakes winners. A dual Gr.1-winning sprinter, Fastnet Rock has fared nicely with Century line mares, that cross yielding an outstanding 75.4% winners-to-runners strike rate.

Zahn's second dam is one of the best mares to race in New Zealand, the 18 times winner Princess Mellay (Mellay (GB)) whose successes included a New Zealand Oaks (12f) and two New Zealand Cups (3200m). Also an outstanding broodmare, Princess Mellay produced the triple Gr.1 winner Prince Majestic and the Listed winner Bi Noble. Her daughters foaled the Group winners The Bandette, De Montfort and King Johny. A member of the Mill Reef male line via Shirley Heights, Darshaan and the English 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 (8f) winner Mark of Esteem, Sir Percy won five of his 10 starts. A Gr.1 winner of the Dewhurst Stakes (7f) at two, Sir Percy at three followed up a 2000 Guineas second with an English Derby-Gr.1 victory. In his first few crops Sir Percy has sired 11 stakes winners in six different countries. Included in that tally is the Hawke's Bay Guineas-Gr.2 (1400m) winner Sir Andrew and Group winners in England, Germany, America and Ireland. Zellis stands at $995 + GST.

LITTLE WONDER

El Roca's dam is by Century's finest son Rubiton, sire of 43 stakes winners. His daughters have continued the good work producing another 34 stakes winners including the Gr.1 gallopers Playing God, Dash For Cash, Amber Sky and Seventh Rock.

Considering the outstanding success of Volksraad (GB) who died in late 2001, it is surprising he has not had sons at stud. That changes this spring with Little Wonder (ex Shortblackmini by Black Minnaloushe (USA)) retiring to Regal Fern Lodge.

El Roca's dam Rubimill is a sister to Sweet Embrace Stakes-Gr.3 (1200m) winner Millrich who was third in Flying Spur's Golden Slipper-Gr.1 (1200m) before embarking on a successful stud career, producing seven winners including Gr.3 sprinter Danerich (Danehill) who has done well at stud in Victoria. Those supporting El Roca in his first year are rewarded with a 50% reduction in his second year and free nominations in each of years three and four.

This classy and honest performer won six of his 22 starts and more than $200,000, and trainer Stephen McKee described Little Wonder as “a horse with a lot of natural ability who never stopped trying”. A winner of three in a row during the summer of 2012-13, Little Wonder progressed to stakes company when taking out the Cambridge Breeders' Stakes-Gr.3 (1200m) and later the Darley Plate-Gr.3 (1200m) at Ellerslie.

He stands at $7500 + GST (live foal guarantee) and his stud companions are Makfi (GB) (Dubawi (IRE)-Dhelaal by Green Desert), Reliable Man (GB) (Dalakhani (IRE)-On Fair Stage by Sadler’s Wells), Redwood (GB) (High Chaparral (IRE)-Arum Lily by Woodman (USA)), Swiss Ace (AUS) (Secret Savings (USA)-Rapid Serve (USA) by Carson City), Postponed (USA) (Summer Squall-Bridal Tea by Gulch) and Red Giant (USA) (Giant’s Causeway (USA)-Beyond The Sun by Kingmambo).

Also third in Bounding's Railway Stakes-Gr.1 (1200m), Little Wonder will be a popular horse with fans of Volksraad, of which there are many as that son of Green Desert (Danzig) was crowned New Zealand’s Champion Stallion on eight occasions, siring 64 stakes winners including the multiple Gr.1 winners Sir Slick, Clifton King, Vinaka and One Under. Little Wonder is a three-quarter brother to Volksraad's best son, the six times Gr.1 winner Sir Slick. He is out of that terrific horse's stakes placed half-sister Shortblackmini by the Irish 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 (8f) winner Black Minnaloushe (USA) (Storm Cat) from Miss Opera by Paris Opera (Marscay).

ZELLIS His breeders Steve Ellis and Robin Percy of Lakeview think so highly of Zellis they have decided to stand him at stud. He is the first son of the English DerbyGr.1 (12f) winner Sir Percy (GB) being made available to breeders. Injured during an accident while being broken in, Zellis (ex Zazu by Rhythm (USA)) didn't get the chance to show what he could do on the track but Ellis is looking forward to the young horse's second career, noting that the rising four year-old has “a very good pedigree and a lovely nature”. “We think he deserves his chance at stud.” Zellis is out of the Rhythm mare Zazu who has produced three winners from her first four to race including the stakes placed Bally Durf. Zazu is out of the Grosvenor

Crowned the Champion Middle Distance Horse in New Zealand for 2006-07, Sir Slick won 22 races and his stakeswinning dam Miss Opera was no one trick pony, all six of her progeny to race being winners including last season's New Zealand Champion 3Y0 Puccini, dual Gr.1 winner of the NZ Derby (2400m) and the Thorndon Mile. Her daughter Shortblackmini is also doing very well, producing the promising juvenile Amarula, who has looked good winning his last two for the McKay stable. Owner Frances Crimmins is delighted that Little Wonder, who was subject to overseas offers, will remain in New Zealand. “I am thrilled that we can keep this sire line going,” she said, adding that Little Wonder is “a lovely horse with a nice nature”. Little Wonder stands at $1000 + GST.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

A Q&A WITH

GREG TOMLINSON

STORY BY PAUL VETTISE

Greg Tomlinson’s Nearco Stud has become a major player with extensive Australasian breeding interests and racing stock in four countries. The Christchurchbased entrepreneur spoke to Bluebloods about his thriving thoroughbred operation.

Q: When and how did you first get involved in racing and breeding? A: “I have been involved in thoroughbred racing for around 20 years, this started by participating in small syndicates with friends with leased mares. This was a great and easy entry, no capital required other than the usual costs to get the horses to the races and a great way to get the feel of the industry with little downside. We had great fun and occasionally had success, Royal Tease being the best off them.”

Q: How did your involvement with Nearco Stud manager Adrian Clark evolve?

Q: Do you have any family connections with thoroughbreds?

A: “I was considering breeding as an option and was introduced to Adrian who was the chief executive of New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing at the time. Adrian advised that I should consider Tip The Wink, a sprinting mare who was available as a racing proposition and potential broodmare prospect. I liked her from the start, and although she had knee issues I purchased her after consulting Central Districts vet Tim Pearce, who recommended wrap surgery.

A: “Yes, pre-1900 our family was involved in the Canterbury area, as owners, breeders and trainers, but more importantly I didn’t really have an option as growing up my mother rarely missed a race. The radio always playing and all family appointments scheduled around meeting dates and race times!”

She never looked back under the fine care of trainer Mike Breslin. From there, Adrian purchased five fillies from Karaka, one being Quintessential, a Fast ‘N’ Famous-Florette filly from the Taylors’ Trelawney draft, and then a number of potential broodmares from several Australian sales.”

14 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2015

Q: Where are your thoroughbred interests based? Greg Tomlinson with the Queensland Oaks trophy won by Quintessential

A: “I have racing stock in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and recently Singapore. I am breeding in New Zealand and Australia only.” Q: Any possibility of establishing your own thoroughbred property? A: “The focus has been investing in bloodstock rather than property, and Nearco has been fortunate to call on the services of Gordon Cunningham of Curraghmore, Casey and Michelle Dando of Bradbury, Libby Bleakley of Highden Park and Mike and Kate Fleming of Broadwater Farms as very professional and committed service providers with the facilities close by the pool of stallions. This has been successful to date, but if there was to be further expansion purchase of, or partnering in, a going concern could be a consideration. Q: How many horses are you currently racing? A: “Thirty plus, the majority being in syndicates or partnerships.” Q: Best horse/horses owned? A: “I have been very fortunate to be involved with a number of good horses. Bangalore Bullet, I raced in partnership with Shane Kennedy, Brian and Louis Vicholey. Trained by Shane, he won both the 2012 Gore and Dunedin Guineas before he was sold. This partnership had a number of very good horses, which we sold. Quintessential has been my favourite to date as we had so much fun with her from winning a trial at Te Teko to winning the Queensland Oaks in the space of months, you never know in this game! “I was also fortunate to purchase into All Too Hard and Dundeel on their way up, two Queen Elizabeth Stakes in a row and now both successful at stud. Kuro was purchased by Jason Abrahams for his Champion Thoroughbred Syndicates and I retained a shareholding. He is a colt by Denman out of Distinctive Lass, a mare Adrian purchased for Nearco in foal, and he has performed well and is continuing to mature. John Sargent, the trainer of Quintessential, and I purchased a Lohnro-Acupuncture filly from the Magic Millions sales. Named Queen of Kariba, she will be raced by our wives Susie and Jill with Howard Blend. The intention is to have her racing at the Gold Coast at the January carnival and she doesn’t look like disappointing at this stage.” Q: Are your interests confined to New Zealand? A: “No, I have broodmares in Australia, stallion shares and a few in training.” Q: How many mares are you breeding from? A: “My broodmare band fluctuates around 50 and at times Nearco will lease broodmares to support the stallion syndicates in which it has invested. This year we will lease mares to support our involvement in up and coming stallions and the lessor will receive a service to one of our stallion syndicates for this consideration.” Q: What process do you follow when deciding suitable matings? A: “This is a rigorous process which takes both Adrian and myself many months of planning and consideration, and at times we have outside assistance. We follow the usual Industry standards, but put emphasis on physical type, and it needs to be a commercial decision.” Q: When did you offer your first yearlings at Karaka? A: “The first yearling was offered in 2012 and we have sold at almost all sales since.” Q: Subsequent sale highlights? A: “The highlight for me is the fact that all horses offered have been sold from $8000 to $550,000 for a High Chapparal-Alagant Satin colt and everything in between, but having happy return buyers is the key for me. I have retained a leg in a number and experiencing them coming through the system is the fun. Having three Nearco-breds of the 12 runners in the 2015 Great Northern Foal Stakes was a thrill and a testament to all concerned.”

Q: Have you sold overseas or any plans to? A: “A Cape Blanco filly out of Causeway Queen was the first to be sold at the Sydney Easter Sales. She was raised on Mike and Kate Fleming’s Broadwater Farm and sold through their consignment. Selling in all markets is the reality today and the fact of an ever changing global market.” Q: What stallions are you currently involved with? A: “I have purchased into a number of both New Zealand and Australian based stallions, including Alamosa, All Too Hard, Darci Brahma, Dundeel, Jimmy Choux, Ocean Park, Reliable Man, Sacred Falls, Shamexpress, Shocking, Showcasing, Super Easy, Swiss Ace and Tavistock. I started investing in stallions when there was a major refresh happening in the New Zealand and will do more in Australia over time. This to me is the most important investment for the industry, improving the quality and reliability of the racing stock for all industry participants.” Q: Are numbers at an optimum level or is expansion envisaged? A: “I don’t believe there is an optimum level, but having the ability to offer good racing prospects who can be commercial for all and the test is lifting the bar, this is the industry opportunity.” Q: Goals for the future? A: “To breed top performing horses, assist with the success of the racing industry and all its participants and keep having fun.” Q: Hobbies or pursuits outside of the business and thoroughbred worlds? A: “I have an active and interesting life, enjoying family, travelling, snow skiing, fishing and some lousy golf with my mates when time is available.”

STUD PROFILE | WAIKATO STUD

Sacred FallS ready to step into o’reilly’s shoes

STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN

J

UST as an oak grows strong in contrary winds, Waikato Stud must launch the best son of O’Reilly, Sacred Falls, in the sad wake of O’Reilly’s loss. Sacred Falls (NZ) (ex Iguazu’s Girl by Redoute’s Choice) moves into his sire’s box, a choice that resonates with hope and faith in the future. O’Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon (IRE)-Courtza by Pompeii Court (USA)), a champion racehorse turned champion sire, had a massive impact on the growth of Waikato Stud, and now it is time for his son to lead the farm into the next decade. “It was a very auspicious moment when Sacred Falls arrived back at his birthplace, Waikato Stud,” Mark Chittick said. “We always wanted to stand a son of O’Reilly and recognised Sacred Falls as being the closest galloper to O’Reilly since O’Reilly.” Sacred Falls, standing at $NZ30,000 + GST, became only the ninth dual winner of the Doncaster Handicap in its 169 year history in 2014. Right from the start Sacred Falls showed he was something special. He won his first six starts at two and three, culminating in the 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 in NZ. Taken to Australia, Sacred Falls was pitted against the best and his dual Doncaster victories showed he was right up there. To top it off, Sacred Falls was sound enough to race into his five year-old season, where he won his fourth Gr.1 in the George Main Stakes. “We have stuck to our beliefs in the requirements we have for the stallions we stand at Waikato Stud,” Chittick said. “This season in particular, the strength of our proven sire roster has been emphasised by Savabeel, who set an Australasian benchmark of six Gr.1 winners and by Pins, who achieved international Gr.1 acclaim through champion Hong Kong sprinter Aerovelocity. In conjunction with O’Reilly, these three sires completely dominated New Zealand’s major sire awards. “With Rios and No Excuse Needed also striking Gr.1 success during 2014-15, there is certainly plenty to look forward to among our proven brigade. This is before even contemplating what lies ahead with the first crop of yearlings by Ocean Park and Rock ‘n’ Pop.” Savabeel (AUS) (Zabeel-Savannah Success by Success Express (USA)), fee $NZ100,000, hardly needs an introduction as he is the most expensive sire in New Zealand and deserves the top spot. Winner of the W.S. Cox Plate-Gr.1 as a three yearold, Savabeel churns out winners around the globe. His 42 stakes winners include nine Gr.1 winners, highlighted by VRC Derby winner Sangster (ex Quinta Special by Spectrum), and this season’s ATC Champagne Stakes winner Pasadena Girl (ex Nina From Pasadena by Redoute’s Choice). His runners are versatile and his yearlings are always highly sought after at the sales.

Sacred Falls

“WE ALWAYS WANTED TO STAND A SON OF O’REILLY AND RECOGNISED SACRED FALLS AS BEING THE CLOSEST GALLOPER TO O’REILLY SINCE O’REILLY.” MARK CHITTICK Ocean Park (NZ) (Thorn Park (AUS)-Sayyida by Zabeel), fee $NZ30,000, is Waikato Stud’s other W.S. Cox Plate-Gr.1 winner, and the multiple Gr.1 winner’s oldest crop will be presented as yearlings in the coming season. His weanlings sold up to $A80,000 in 2015, with many buyers recalling the huge ability that Ocean Park demonstrated as a racehorse. He was Gr.1 placed at three and really blossomed as a spring four year-old. He won NZ’s Makfi ChallengeGr.1 over 1400m first up and then tore up the tracks in Melbourne, winning the Underwood Stakes-Gr.1, Caulfield Stakes-Gr.1 and W.S. Cox Plate-Gr.1 in succession. Ocean Park had two runs in the autumn in NZ, winning the New Zealand Stakes-Gr.1 before a whirlwind trip to Dubai. Retired after that effort, Ocean Park was crowned NZ’s Horse of the Year and Australia’s Champion Middle Distance Horse. Pins (AUS) (Snippets-No Finer by Kaoru Star), fee $NZ25,000, picked up his second Hong Kong Champion Sire title in the 2012/13 season thanks to the efforts of Ambitious Dragon (ex Golden Gamble by Oregon). In 2014/15 it has been Aerovelocity (ex Exodus by Kaapstad) who has been flying his flag with over $HK14 million in prizemoney for the season. All up, Pins has 65 stakes winners and eight Gr.1 winners, making him by far the best son of top class sire Snippets. Fastnet Rock is one of the hottest sires in Australia, and his sons are starting to make their mark, with

Hinchinbrook being the first to sire a Gr.1 winner this season. Rock ‘n’ Pop (AUS) (Fastnet RockPopsy (NZ) by Sir Tristram (IRE)), fee $NZ9000, was a $1m yearling, thanks to his exciting pedigree, by a champion sire from a dual Gr.1-winning mare who had already left a stakes winner. Rock ‘n’ Pop quickly lived up to the hype, chalking up a Gr.1 victory as a spring three year-old in the timehonoured NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1. His oldest foals will be yearlings this year. No Excuse Needed (GB) (Machiavellian-Nawaiet by Zilzal), fee $NZ6000, shares the same sire as the illfated champion international sire Street Cry, who was a big loss this year. No Excuse Needed has 16 stakes winners under his belt and was crowned Champion NZ Sire of 2YO in 2007-08. This season, No Excuse Needed has left Gr.1 winner I Do (ex Freequence by O’Reilly), who has collected 15 first place cheques in her career to date. His other Gr.1 winner is Daffodil (ex Spring by O’Reilly). Young sire Rios (NZ) (Hussonet (USA)-Gussy Godiva by Last Tycoon), fee $NZ4000, is mean whilst beseeching respect with breeders. Despite just 11 runners from his first three crops, he has already sired the Gr.1 winning three-year-old Gaultier (ex Playacting, by Royal Academy), who swept home for victory in the Levin Classic-Gr.1. Combined with a 71% winners-to-runners ratio for his classic stock, Rios is a sire to watch.

STUD PROFILE | BRIGHTHILL FARM

reSultS make sleepless nights worthwhile

E

ACH spring Brighthill Farm’s Nick King rises during the wee hours not just a few times, but many times, determined to be present at as many of the Waikato stud’s foalings as possible. That is no mean feat as the stud is home to 50 or so resident mares, while that number and more again visit each season. It is something King has been doing for a couple of decades now but he never tires of it. “There is nothing quite like that adrenalin rush followed by a lovely sense of relief you get when you see a healthy foal lying next to its mother,” he said. “I know it sounds clichéd but every single time you look at a newborn foal you wonder ‘is this the one?’ That is the beauty of the game. Nobody can tell you that that foal is not going to be the next champion. I think if you haven’t got that in the back of your mind you are in the wrong game!”

King’s refreshing optimism is coupled with a strong dose of realism regarding the “ups and downs” of breeding thoroughbreds, but he is a man who likes to “concentrate on the positives of this great game we are involved in”. One aspect of the thoroughbred world that gives the King family particular pleasure is the chances it affords young people with a passion for horses. “If someone has a great love for horses and they are willing to put in the effort and energy, there are a lot of opportunities out there for them. No matter what is happening elsewhere, jobs with horses are always out there, not just here but around the world.” Not surprisingly then, King was delighted when his son Benji, who has well and truly inherited his family’s passion for the thoroughbred, was awarded last year’s Sunline Education Trust International Management Scholarship. Nick and

younger son Charlie recently visited Benji in Ireland with Nick enjoying the “chance to catch up with a lot of people.” Currently working in the United States, Benji also spent time at Coolmore Stud, which is part of a nice cycle for the family with his father’s first job coming at that famed Irish farm. Born into a family involved with national hunt racing, King was a keen three-day eventer who rode from an early age. It was during his six-year stint at Coolmore that he was afforded the opportunity to work at Cambridge Stud. “That was my first experience of New Zealand and I loved it,” he said. “So when the chance came to live here I jumped at it, it was a very easy decision to make.” The move, in agreement with his English born wife Anne-Marie, was originally supposed to be a

temporary one “but nearly 30 years later we are still here!” The Kings are full of praise for the New Zealand breeding industry, its people impressing him from day one. “I think horse racing attracts a great bunch of people all totally committed to what they do, and we have made some terrific friends along the way. New Zealand has been very good to us.” King’s ambition was always to establish his own farm and he and Anne-Marie have earned both local and international respect with the job they have done at Brighthill. Respect evidenced by the fact the Aga Khan chose Brighthill to host his first ever shuttler, the European Champion Older Horse Azamour (IRE) (Night Shift (USA)-Asmara by Lear Fan). “Statistically the Aga Khan is the world’s most successful breeder, he is a genius. So we were very chuffed by the faith he showed in us. It was a great personal achievement.” Taking an instant liking to the four times Gr.1winning Azamour, King recalled that everyone who saw him was impressed. “He was a gorgeous stallion, everyone would ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ when we paraded him.” Sadly Azamour died at the Aga Khan’s Irish stud Gilltown in April last year having served just one southern hemisphere book; but King is excited about the prospects of that group of young horses, with Azamour’s first yearlings to hit Karaka early next year. “He has some absolutely stunning yearlings,” he said. A few will remain in Brighthill ownership as King is keen to hold on to some of his daughters, noting that in the future mares by such a well credentialled stallion “will be highly sought after”. Especially as Azamour’s first European crops have yielded 24 stakes winners including the Dubai Sheema Classic-Gr.1 (12f) winner Dolniya and Irish Oaks-Gr.1 (12f) heroine Covert Love. Another breeder of great international renown is Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, partowner of Brighthill resident Perfectly Ready (AUS) (More Than Ready (USA)-Elle Duccio by Danehill (USA)), who stands alongside another Aga Khan

Twin Soul (Singspiel) with her Azamour colt

product in Dalghar. While the Goodwood Handicap-Gr.1 (1200m) winner Perfectly Ready is a proven stallion (NZ’s 2010-11 Leading First Season Sire), Dalghar (FR) (Anabaa (USA)-Daltawa by Miswaki) has stood for three years, with his first group of yearlings selling for up to $130,000 at Karaka this year. “He is a wonderful type of horse with a super pedigree,” King said of the Gr.3-winning halfbrother to the multiple Gr.1 winners Daylami and Dalakhani. “It is one of the world’s best families, it seems we are always updating his pedigree page.” Right from the early days of Brighthill the Kings have chosen to stand horses a bit out of the ordinary. They were the first to bring back a stallion from Japan, the five times Gr.1-winning star Beau Zam being the farm’s foundation stallion. As already stated, Azamour was the first Aga Khan horse to shuttle to Australasia, while Perfectly Ready was the first son of More Than Ready to stand in New Zealand.

“To compete with the big studs you need something unique,” he said, “something that stands out.” Brighthill has been run as a successful operation for some time and King is happy not to get any bigger, noting that he loves the family involvement in the stud with Anne-Marie and their children (when not overseas), integral to the day to day running of Brighthill supported by a “terrific team.” Both their elder sons Benji (who was a familiar face at Vinery Stud where he worked for four seasons) and Harry are now based on overseas stud farms gaining valuable experience, and daughter Sophie is presently assisting in the office and with the horses. “New Zealand has a great history of successful farms having their origins as family businesses, which has always given us a lot of confidence. We have worked hard to keep it a family affair and we enjoy the hands-on aspect. There is no pressure on us to expand,” he said, “we just have the ambition to make every year more successful than the previous one, to keep improving the quality of our horses.” Also he enjoys the success of his clients’ horses as much as his own. “We really love seeing horses from the farm succeed,” he said, nominating South African Champion 2Y0 Filly Rumya as a horse who gave him particular enjoyment, cheering the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum bred filly (whose third dam is the champion Emancipation) on to two Gr.1 victories in South Africa. “She is now at stud in Europe and we get a big buzz out of that.” Another favourite is the home-bred Al Strada, a Listed-winning two times Gr.1 placed son of Perfectly Ready who, after being rated the highest 2Y0 male of his year, is now racing well as Twin Delight in Hong Kong, winning three races this season at Happy Valley.

Azamour

New Zealand racing and breeding is facing some tough challenges, but King is confident the passion the country has for the thoroughbred will win out in the end; and while farms like Brighthill are run by families like the Kings, the industry is in good hands.

STUD PROFILE | LIME COUNTRY THOROUGHBREDS

Niagara upholdS legacy of Best in show family

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

L

IME Country Thoroughbreds’ Jo and Greg Griffin were after just the right foundation stallion for their Hastings property and when the regally bred Niagara (AUS) (Encosta de Lago-River Song by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)) was offered to them two years ago they knew they'd found their horse. A $620,000 Magic Millions graduate who showed enough early toe to race twice at two, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Niagara was sent out favourite at his Canterbury debut in March 2011. He was a game fourth after being trapped wide from the outside gate, but he lost no fans and was again the favoured runner at his second start. He ran another great race to be a game second to Detours, who would go on to win three stakes races, while third was the future Gr.1 winner Mental. It did not take Niagara long to break his duck at three, the bay racing away to a six length victory at Canterbury second up as odds-on favourite. So impressive was he in that win that he again started favourite in the Norman Robinson Stakes-Gr.3 (2000m) at Caulfield. Unfortunately things did not go to plan for Niagara who was held up in traffic at the turn, catching the eye with a strong finish; third behind Sabrage and Sangster, who would go on to finish third and first in the VRC Derby-Gr.1 (2500m). Niagara also contested that famed classic, but it was not a day for leaders on the rails. He took no harm from the run however, two weeks later contesting the Sandown Guineas-Gr.2 (1600m) in which he was only just beaten after working hard on pace throughout. Still in great form in the autumn, Niagara was second in the Eskimo PrinceLR (1200m) before recording a dominant all the way victory in the Ajax Stakes-Gr.2 (1500m). Niagara achieved a Timeform rating of 121 thus placing him amongst the top colts in his 3YO year, below only Sepoy, Foxwedge, Helmet and Smart Missile, and just above Ocean Park. That is certainly select company. His patronage in his first two seasons at stud has been an amazing revelation. Serving 101 mares in his first season, he then achieved the rare feat of serving more in his second season with 119. “He is one of the most popular horses in New Zealand.” Jo Griffin said. Niagara's first foals were well received at the recent Karaka National Weanling Sale, selling for up to $60,000. That colt, purchased by Ampulla Lodge, is bred on a 6fx6f cross of Best In Show. Jo Griffin was delighted by Niagara's sales results, noting he was the only stallion (represented by three or more weanlings) to not have any sell for under service fee. Also he was the third highest on average after Tavistock and Ocean Park. The three stallions also were the only sires to sell three weanlings or more for over $30,000. Niagara

Niagara

“THE MOST HANDSOME SON OF ENCOSTA DE LAGO EVER BORN, A HORSE WITH A PHYSIQUE TO DIE FOR.” GAI WATERHOUSE averaged six times his service fee, the best of the three, with the next best of the overall sale being two and a half times service fee. The recently announced prizemoney hike for the Karaka 3YO race, up from $250,000 to $1million, sees Niagara ideally placed to specifically target more glory. As Greg Griffin noted, “Niagara’s Timeform rating proves what a serious 3YO he was over distances from 1200-1600m. He’s got to be a major contender to sire runners for both the 2YO and 3YO Karaka Million Dollar races.”

Seven of Dancing Show’s eight to race are winners including the Gr.1 gallopers Umatilla and Hurricane Sky, who both enjoyed successful stud careers, between them siring 52 stakes winners. Dancing Show’s daughters have also excelled, the metropolitan winner Show Dancing producing the Australian Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) winner and successful sire Al Maher (26 stakes winners including current star filly Delicacy), while the lightly raced Shantha's Choice (Canny Lad) is a blue hen in her own right. The dam of three Gr.1 winners, Shantha's Choice secured her name in history by producing influential stallion Redoute’s Choice who, after a short but outstanding racing career which saw him win four Gr.1 races, has sired 123 stakes winners.

Niagara is one of 106 stakes winners sired by Encosta de Lago, who has had five sons sire stakes winners including the much missed Northern Meteor, also trained by Gai Waterhouse. He is the second foal produced by River Song, daughter of the Kentucky Derby-Gr.1 (10f) winner Fusaichi Pegasus (Mr. Prospector-Angel Fever by Danzig) who is making his mark as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing 24 stakes winners including Hakassan, Estrela Monarchos, We Miss Artie and Albany Reunion.

Dam also of the big race winners Platinum Scissors and emerging stallion Manhattan Rain (also by Encosta de Lago), Shantha's Choice also produced the Gr.3 mare Sliding Cube who, by Encosta de Lago, has the dual Gr.2-winning and top rated 2YO colt, Rubick to stud this spring at Coolmore, where he is in great demand.

River Song, who sadly died last year having produced just two other foals (mares now in foal to highflying stallions), is a half-sister to the Gr.3 winner Murjana and to the dam of the Gr.1 miler Gathering. River Song's city-winning dam Twyla, by Danehill (USA), is a daughter of the wonderful mare Dancing Show (USA) (Nijinsky), whose second dam is Best in Show.

Described by Waterhouse as “the most handsome son of Encosta de Lago ever born, a horse with a physique to die for,” Niagara has the temperament to match his looks and ability. “He is a very easy horse to deal with. He has a user friendly temperament, a trait which he passes on to his offspring. We have been incredibly lucky and can’t wait for the yearling sales.” Griffin said.

FaStNet’S atlaNte a talented gr.1 performer

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

O

NE of Fastnet Rock's best sons to race in New Zealand, the imposing Atlante (ex Readyforcatherine by More Than Ready (USA)) makes his stud debut at Mapperley Stud this spring. The handsome bay showed immediate talent for the Murray BakerAndrew Forsman stable, but did not have much luck at his first two starts. However his outstanding natural ability was there for all to see at his third outing. Stepping up to 1400m, Atlante worked early off an awkward start and after looking beaten close to home fought back valiantly. Deriving great benefit from that winning experience, Atlante rose in class and distance at his next outing and was again too strong, giving a big kick with a couple of furlongs to go and winning the Listed Canterbury Stakes by three lengths. That win saw Atlante sent out favourite in the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m), and he did not let his supporters down with another dominant victory. That form earned Atlante a trip to Australia where he performed with distinction. Striking unsuitable slow going at his Sydney debut, Atlante was nevertheless gallant, showing plenty of fight when only just beaten by Dissident in the Hobartville Stakes-Gr.2 (1400m). Subsequently a close up sixth in a hot running of the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) won by Dissident, Atlante struck significantly rainaffected tracks at his next two starts. However the Melbourne Spring weather was better and first-up at Caulfield he was a determined winner over dual Gr.1 winner Trust In A Gust in Listed company over 1200m. Unlucky at subsequent Gr.1 outings when held up for runs in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and caught wide in the Toorak Handicap, Atlante retired to stud as the winner of four of his 13 starts and with earnings topping $360,000. Mapperley Stud's Simms Davison had been “keeping a close eye” on Atlante throughout his career and he is thrilled to have secured him. And he is even more excited about the response he had when deciding to syndicate the young horse. “Just about everyone I spoke to took a share. It only took me a day and a half to have him done,” he said. With some of New Zealand's biggest breeders involved in Atlante's career, he is sure to be supported by high quality mares. One of Fastnet Rock's 78 stakes winners, Atlante is out of the Gr.3-placed multiple city winner Readyforcatherine whose dam is the Kingmambo mare Rosa Carolina. Bred on the highly successful Danehill/More Than Ready cross, Atlante hails from a strong international family whose members include the Gr.1 winners Talinum, Set

“HE WAS A QUALITY COLT, A LOVELY MOVER WITH IMMENSE ABILITY. HE HAD AN ELECTRIC TURN OF FOOT AND ALL THE ATTRIBUTES TO COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.” MURRAY BAKER Alight, Festin, Lord At War and Jeune. Atlante was highly regarded by Murray Baker who called him “an outstanding looking individual with a great temperament.” “He was a quality colt, a lovely mover with immense ability. He had an electric turn of foot and all the attributes to compete at the highest level.” Davison agrees. “He is a really lovely horse to look at. He has the physique of Fastnet Rock but you can see the More Than Ready in him too.” Standing alongside Atlante is another handsome young stallion in He's Remarkable (NZ) (PentireAxion by Zabeel (NZ)). A horse described by trainer Roger James as “undoubtedly one of the most talented gallopers I have trained,” he was a tough and talented performer who raced at the highest level in New Zealand and Australia. A Gr.3 winner of the Newmarket Handicap (1400m) at Newcastle, He's Remarkable is best remembered by Australians as being an unlucky loser on protest of the Railway Stakes-Gr.1 (1600m) in Perth. That race which many believed he was entitled to retain, was one of He's Remarkable's three placings at the elite level, the bay also second in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) won by Jimmy Choux and third in Shez Sinsational's Spring Classic (2040m).

A six-time winner of more than $565,000, retiring sound, He's Remarkable is one of 43 stakes winners for Pentire. Bred on the same Pentire/Zabeel cross as stakes winners Art Success, Larry's Never Late and Anniesstar, He's Remarkable is one of four winners from as many to race for the unraced Axiom. A daughter of the four-time Group-winning Centaine mare Arletty, Axiom is a sister to the Gr.3 placed 12-time winner Maythehorsebemagic. A descendant of the influential Teppo, He's Remarkable can count among his relations the Gr.1 gallopers Legs, Guyno, Sixty Seconds, Ungar and the champion Luskin Star. Davison is “rapt” with the quality of foals He's Remarkable is leaving. “He is a lovely horse who is really stamping his progeny. We have been getting a lot of return business to him which is a good sign, and we are excited about his first yearlings at Karaka.” Describing He's Remarkable as a horse who “never gave up,” Davison said “if his foals have only half his heart they will be winning races.” Davison is also excited about the prospects of He's Remarkable's 2000 Guineas-bound brother Xtravagant who created a big impression debuting with a 7.25 length victory in mid-April. That horse and He's Remarkable, at $375,000 and $360,000, are two of the top 10 most expensive sons of Pentire sold as yearlings.

Darci proves a worthy sire son of Danehill

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

O

NE of the mighty Danehill's most prolific Gr.1 gallopers, The Oaks' Darci Brahma (NZ) (ex Grand Echezeaux by Zabeel) has also proved his worth as one of his sire's best stallion sons. An outstanding racehorse who had all eyes on him from the time he was offered at the 2004 Karaka Premier, fetching $1.1m, Darci Brahma raced 19 times, winning 10 races (five Gr.1) and was runner-up a further five times.

It is not often that a New Zealand juvenile can mix it with the best in Australia but that is just what Darci Brahma did, after winning three of his first five starts at home, he headed to Queensland to claim the T.J. Smith Classic-Gr.1 (1600m). That was the first of a run of four consecutive victories for Darci Brahma, the highlight of which was the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m), a race he won by 3.75 lengths. Going on to record another three victories at the elite level (the Otaki Maori WFA Sprint, the Waikato Draught Sprint and the Telegraph Handicap), Darci Brahma was also second to Apache Cat in the Australian Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m). Darci Brahma took his great form to the breeding shed, the handsome bay is proving to be one of New Zealand's classiest stallions and boasts an impressive winners-to-runners strike rate in excess of 70%. In all, 22 of his progeny are stakes winners including the Gr.1 gallopers Recite, Nashville, Artistic, Irish Fling and this year's runaway AJC Oaks heroine Gust of Wind. With 7.1% of Darci Brahma's runners stakes winners, he is an extremely popular stallion in Asia and his progeny have excelled in Singapore (he has been leading sire twice) where his son Super Easy is a dual Horse of the Year. Darci Brahma has also made his presence felt in the NZ premierships, running second to O'Reilly in 2013-14 and again finishing runner-up this season behind Savabeel. Darci Brahma stock also fare well at the sales, his 2015 Karaka Premier yearlings averaged more than $90,000 (18 sold) and made up to $200,000; excellent results off his $20,000 fee. “He has been a gem right from the start,” The Oaks' Rick Williams said “He is a happy horse who has never been hard to manage.” Darci Brahma is bred for success, his dam being the Australasian OaksGr.1 (2000m) winner Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel), also dam of the Gr.3 galloper Burgundy. Her dam is the Gr.3 winner Richebourg (Vice Regal (NZ), dam of the Caulfield Cup-Gr.1 (2400m) and Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 (3200m) winner Ethereal. Also ancestress of the stakes winners Configure, Dolmabache, Pure Elegance and Bellini Rose, Richebourg is a sister to stakes winner Federalism and half-sister to Listed winner Demerara. The best may still be to come for Darci Brahma as his exciting son Cauthen is on the comeback trail after a series of setbacks. The now four year-old really set tongues wagging with a 8.5 length debut victory at Te Rapa before heading to Melbourne and easily defeating subsequent W.S. Cox PlateGr.1) (2040m) winner Shamus Award and Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) winner Long John in the Listed Mitchell McKenzie Stakes (1200m). “He’s a very serious horse and I’m just hoping that one day he can show the true ability that I know he’s got,” trainer Andrew Campbell said.

Roc de Cambes, whose career ended prematurely when he was galloped on at his eighth start, was a dual stakes winner of $3.1m in Japan. As he was sold by The Oaks, it is fitting he has returned there for a stud career. He hails from a prolific international family whose members include the big race winners Naaqoos, Tamuro Cherry, Pilsudski, Fine Motion, Youmzain and Creachadoir, as well as exciting Australia filly Lumosty.

Standing alongside Darci Brahma is Red Ransom stallion Roc de Cambes (ex Fairy Lights (IRE) by Fairy King (USA)), a young sire whose first group of three year-olds are showing plenty of potential. El Roca another gem by Fastnet

I

T has been another stellar season for Fastnet Rock, and it is little wonder his sons are in great demand. Especially as three of his first to retire have already sired stakes winners, Hinchinbrook (sire of Gr.1 juvenile Press Statement and dual Listed winner Flippant), Stryker (Listed winner Strykum) and Wanted (Listed winner Dead or Alive) assuring breeders that sons of Fastnet Rock are great options for their mares. Meanwhile another of his sons, Rothesay, leads the first season sire chart by winners with 12 individual winners, a table Hinchinbrook leads by earnings, which makes El Roca (AUS) (ex Rubimill by

Rubiton), who heads to Westbury Stud this spring (having been raised there), an exciting prospect. “He was a lovely yearling and it is great to have him back,” said Westbury's Russell Warwick, “I had been chasing him for a while.” Well supported at his Taupo debut in August 2013, El Roca broke his maiden in easy fashion, saluting by 1.75 lengths with fellow Fastnet Rock colt Atlante (future NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner) third. Up in class, El Roca was again kept safe in the Listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes, a race in which he overcame interference to salute by two lengths.

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

Impressing at his Australian debut, El Roca led the Caulfield Guineas Prelude-Gr.3 (1400m), fighting on gamely for second to Eclair Big Bang with Long John on his heels. The third placegetter would win the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) at his next outing and no doubt El Roca's owners are still wondering what might have been if their horse had not got into such trouble. Badly held up along the rails, El Roca went to the line untested, finishing fifth in an excellent form race with W.S Cox Plate-Gr.1 (2040m) winner Shamus Award third and multiple Gr.1 winner Dissident fourth. Back from a break El Roca atoned for his unlucky Melbourne spring campaign, showing his usual

pace to claim the Eskimo Prince Stakes-LR (1200m) by two lengths, leaving Dissident and Romantic Touch in his wake. Taking on the older horses in the Liverpool Stakes-Gr.3 (1300m), El Roca (the only three year-old in the field) was second to Terravista and at his next outing he again went down fighting, only just beaten by Dissident in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m). Taking up the lead in the George Ryder Stakes-Gr.1 (1600m), El Roca ran yet another great race against older horses to be third behind globe-trotting sprinter Gordon Lord Byron with Sacred Falls, Toydini, Streama and Boban behind him. After racing wide from a horror gate in gruelling conditions in Sacred Falls’ second Doncaster Handicap-Gr.1 (1600m), El Roca returned to Melbourne, but unfortunately did not race due to injury. A brief Queensland campaign ensued, however the horse was maturing into a stallion and retirement beckoned. One of Fastnet Rock's 78 stakes winners (and his highest rated son to stand in NZ), El Roca is a son of the Rubiton mare Rubimill, a sister to the Sweet Embrace Stakes-Gr.3 (1200m) winner and Golden Slipper-Gr.1 placegetter Millrich who produced the Gr.3-winning sprinter Danerich (Danehill) who has fared well at stud in Victoria. This is a prolific black type family, one which has also produced the stakes winners Dilly Dally, Li Lo Lill and Linga Longa Lucy. And ancestress of this family is Trivet whose descendants also include the 2Y0 Triple Crown heroine Burst. Those supporting El Roca in his first year ($7500 + GST) are offered an attractive opportunity by the stud with a 50% reduction in his second year and free nominations in each of years three and four. Seddon has been delighted in the way in which El Roca has settled into life at Westbury. Champion jockey Hugh Bowman said of El Roca, “I hold him in high regard…he is just a very good horse and a good stallion prospect.” Standing alongside El Roca is another exciting young stallion in Makfi, a dual Gr.1-winning son of the great Dubawi who has made a terrific start to his stud career. Siring Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes-Gr.1 (1400m) Marky Mark in his first crop, Makfi has made an equally impressive start in Europe where he has been represented by French 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) winner Make Believe and dual Listed winner Cornwallville.
