Features
This year Winterval will announce new attractions alongside festival favourites to ensure a sparkling programme of events. There will be a multitude of free events as well as ticketed activities. A Christmas festival would be nothing without the man himself and this is another area where Winterval comes up trumps. Santa’s Kingdom has moved to a new location in the Old Sorting Office in the Viking Triangle. Visitors will be transported into Santa’s busy workshop where his elves are preparing for the big
day. En route to see Santa Claus, families will be able to explore the enchanted streets of Ireland’s oldest city. For one weekend only during Winterval, The Plaza on the Quays will be lit up as Waterford Walls Presents Patterns of Light an interactive light show from November 24th to 26th. As part of the festival visitors will see the sculptures on the plaza lit up and the surrounding area along the quay brought to life with patterns of coloured light! These will scan around the area and will light areas across the river and into the air in the area. Along with some new attractions, festival favourites including the traditional horse drawn sleigh, Winterval Express train and Winterval Illuminates light show will return. Cathedral Square and Palace Square in the heart of the Viking Triangle
will be filled with Winterval’s Christmas market where visitors can be tempted by the wonderful treats and search for that unique Christmas present handcrafted in Waterford. There’s so much to see and do for everyone at Winterval. Booking tickets in advance so weekends can be spent exploring this interactive medieval city as it celebrates this most wonderful time of the year is highly recommended. This year the Winterval festival starts on Friday, November 17th. Winterval Santa’s Kingdom
The Wonderful world of Winterval welcomes you to Santa’s Kingdom, in his new Winterval home at the Old Sorting Office on the Quay in the Viking Triangle. Be transported into the heart of Santa’s busy work shop as he and his elves prepare for the big day. While the adults relax and enjoy a warm drink the children will be immersed in a huge range of activities that will keep those excited minds busy while they wait to see the man himself. If this gets all too much, you can simply sit and watch our classic Christmas movies or create a master piece on our scribble walls. There will be lots to see and do and best of all, there is never a boring queue!
However! Right now, work has begun getting Santa’s ‘Winterval Kingdom’ ready for his arrival in mid November and in the coming weeks the elves will be making a secret flying visit to check the that ‘Santa’s Kingdom’ interior design requirements are being met. Santas Kingdom requires lots of snow, a clean chimney, baubles, a Christmas tree, hot chocolate, (of course) - the lot!! When the elves have finished checking Santa’s ‘to do’ list, these elves will be casting a watchful eye as you prepare your letter for Santa, so don’t forget to bring that along when you’re visiting Winterval and ensure a safe delivery at the GPO right beside Santas Kingdom. www.winterval.ie/events/ticketed/santas-kingdom

The Viking Sword Sculpture In July of this year, renowned local carver John Hayes and his ‘Special Branch Carvings’ team found a giant Douglas Fir tree and are currently working on it now from a Waterford workshop. Why? Because they are carving the World’s biggest Viking Sword, of course! The sword is soon to be unveiled at Waterford Museum of Treasures as part of the Viking 3D experience ‘King of the Vikings.’
monastery, stealing valuables and people for slaves.
“Everything about this project is local, historic, including using a native tree, which had fallen during a storm,” John said.
We have accounts of fierce battles, Viking ships destroyed and the Irish chieftains killing many Vikings.
With over 18 panels, the sword tells the story of Waterford, the Viking’s journey from Norway to Waterford, Reginald’s Tower, the romance of Aoife and Strongbow, and the link between Waterford’s Vikings and the town of York. Other works of ‘Special Branch Carvings’ include the new Waterford Greenway with two impressive playgrounds situated along the route of the former railway line. The project was developed in conjunction with Waterford City & County Council and Creative Play Solutions Galway. The Viking Sword Sculpture tells the Dramatic Story of the Vikings coming to Ireland and to Waterford, Ireland’s Oldest City The Dragon - Comets were believed to be dragons and bad omens. The Vikings leave Scandinavia – Norway, Sweden and Denmark - in their magnificent longboats and start raiding Ireland. They penetrate south-east Ireland by sailing up the Suir Barrow and Nore rivers, the Three Sisters, raiding as they go in lightning, hit-and-run attacks, striking terror into the monks. AD795 – First recorded Viking attack on a monastery in Ireland, burning the
AD840 – The Vikings begin building base camps or ships camps (called longphorts) such as Woodstown by the banks of the River Suir, a B-shaped fort with a ditch, bank and fence surrounding it. AD 902 – The Irish attack the Vikings and expel them from Ireland.
Ireland has twelve years of peace from the Vikings. AD914 - Return of Vikings to Ireland when a huge fleet of them under Ottar, attack Waterford. Again the Irish monks record this dramatic event in their diaries, ‘the Annals’. AD914 – The Vikings start building a settlement in Port Láirge (Waterford). They call their settlement Vadrarfjordr. The beautiful ribbon interlace with an animal head carved on the tip of the blade is from a bone found in Waterford archaeological excavations dating to about AD1090, a practise piece for metalworkers. The design is a mixture of Irish and Scandinavian styles. AD918 – The map of England and Ireland represents the following event: Reginald, King of Waterford, attacks and captures York, becoming King of Waterford and York. Reginald’s dynasty rules York for fifty years. AD921 - The Annals record Reginald’s death as ‘King of All the Foreigners of Britain and Ireland’. The coin showing Thor’s hammer was struck by King Reginald in York.
900s – Due to infighting among themselves and the fierce resistance of the Irish chieftains the Vikings remain confined to their coastal settlements, which gradually develop into trading towns. Uneasy, temporary alliances are made – for example an Irish king allied to the Vikings of Waterford might fight another rival Irish king allied with the Dublin or Limerick Vikings. AD980 – In the Battle of Tara the Irish defeat and subdue the Vikings. AD1014 – The Battle of Clontarf sees the High King of Ireland with allies from the Viking towns of both Waterford and Limerick finally subdue the Vikings of Dublin who fail in their efforts to remain as a separate independent Viking kingdom. The High King Brian Boru dies in this battle. 1000s & 1100s - Under the control of various Irish kings and princes the old Viking towns flourish as trading centres. The end of the Viking Age AD1170 – The Normans under Strongbow attack and capture Waterford. In Reginald’s Tower the Normans execute two of the four Viking leaders but they spare the other two. The Normans expel the Vikings from the Viking Triangle into a suburb. While the city is still burning, Aoife daughter of the Irish King who invited in the Normans – Dermot McMurrough – is wedded to Strongbow. This historic marriage marks the end of the Viking Age. Coins are struck in Reginald’s Tower twenty years later with the name of the City of Waterford - CIVITAS WATERFORD. The penny was broken into halves and quarters to pay a halfpenny or quarter penny (farthing). Written by: Eamonn McEneaney | Director | Waterford Treasures

Resident Genealogist @ The Medieval Museum ‘HISTORY REMEMBERS THE CELEBRATED, GENEALOGY REMEMBERS THEM ALL’ Tony Hennessy, the new Resident Genealogist at the Medieval Museum in Waterford’s Viking Triangle, has an interesting story to tell: ‘When I was about fourteen or fifteen I was shown an old, creased and slightly blurry photograph of an ancient looking woman standing in a field or a garden with a child in her arms. I was told she was my grandmother’s grandmother. My grandmother’s grandmother?! But would she not have been around in the famine times? Did they have camera’s then?? “What was her name?” “Mrs Bergin” I was told. “First name and maiden name unknown, lost forever” I was told.
Staring at the photo I was struck by the realization that such a distant ancestor was actually a person in their own right, a human being who lived a life and not just a name and a date. In time I discovered that Mrs Bergin was born Margaret Quann shortly after the famine in a two-roomed thatched cottage just outside Waterford City. Known as Peg she was the daughter of Patrick Quann, a blacksmith. Despite its small size their home was a gathering place for music and playing cards and even a free haircut. And I was reliably informed that Peg’s party piece was to play the fiddle while dancing around two hot pokers taken from the fire! Peg married Francis Bergin, a stone cutter from the city and they went on to have seven sons and one daughter, my great grandmother Margaret Bergin.
Peg Quann’s story may not be of great significance on a global level but for me, as her direct descendant, it is an important part of my family story. I have long since discovered that everybody has a story to tell but unfortunately not every story gets told. As a professional genealogist it’s my job to help people rediscover and tell their own family story, to move beyond a list of names and dates and put flesh on the bones and colour in the cheeks of your ancestor‘. Tony Hennessy M.A.G.I. is Waterford Museum of Treasure’s new Resident Genealogist. He is a member of Accredited Genealogists Ireland with over 30 years of experience in the field. Tony will be giving a series of six genealogy themed lunchtime talks at the Medieval Museum beginning on Wednesday 1st November and continuing for the five Wednesdays following thereafter. He is also available for half hour or one hour one-to-one consultations at the museum. As well as carrying out research and teaching genealogy Tony specializes in drawing large scale family trees suitable for presentation and framing. His family trees have been presented to, among others, the Mayor of Chicago, the Mayor of Boston and, most recently, US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and his wife Jane O’Meara Sanders. An Illustrated Statement of Faith: The Great Parchment Book of Waterford. The Great Parchment Book of Waterford: Liber Antiquissimus Civitatis Waterfordiae is a manuscript containing records of the city from 1356 to 1649. The book was made using 233 sheets of vellum or calf hide. The earlier part of the book 1356-1470s is the product of the reordering of the city’s ancient records by the Mayor of Waterford James Rice, whose gruesome cadaver tomb is in the nearby Christ Church Cathedral and whose wine vault lies beneath this museum. The remarkable series of illustrations on the 1566 page is unprecedented in an Irish manuscript. The images are a statement of the deeply-held religious beliefs of the loyal citizens of Waterford during the reign of Queen Elizabeth when it found its loyalties divided between
the pope in Rome and the queen who had made herself Head of the Church in England and Ireland. The royal arms are above the walled port city which is named Port Láirge (Waterford), the only words in the Irish language in the book. The royal arms symbolise the city’s loyalty to the English monarchs. On the top right of the page is an image of God holding a sword and surrounded by the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, judging the souls in Purgatory on the last day. Banners in Latin proclaim the words judge wisely and remember death. This reference to Purgatory echoes the decrees of the Council of Trent which ended in 1663 confirming the Catholic doctrine of Purgatory. Standing below and awaiting judgement like any other
mere mortal is Queen Elizabeth, who is uncrowned with perhaps the city of London and the heavenly Jerusalem in the background. THE VIRGIN MARY AND THE VIRGIN QUEEN The image of the Virgin Mary suckling the infant Jesus, is a reference to the citizens’ loyalty to Catholicism and their devotion to the Virgin Mary as well as their rejection of the cult of the Protestant Virgin Queen. It is only one of two manuscript depictions of the Virgin to survive in Ireland the other being preserved in the Book of Kells. The outdated symbol of the Green Man decorates the foot of that page. The Green Man is a pagan symbol evoking nature and the forests and the tendrils
coming from his mouth which also show Tudor roses. This is perhaps a message from the loyal people of Waterford that the queen should return to the old religion and not bring paganism as they see it to England and Ireland. DID YOU KNOW? The last entry captures a moment in time. It follows a pattern throughout the book where each year is recorded under the name of the elected mayor and the ruling monarch. When King Charles I was executed in 1649 his son Charles was cited as king when the scribe recorded the election of John Levitt as mayor. When the city fell to Cromwell’s army some months later the entry was viewed as a serious insult to the English parliament who had executed Charles I and so, it was rubbed out leaving the page defaced.

Twenty-three select objects - the earliest AD1080 and the most recent a Waterford Glass piece given to Mayor ‘Cha’ O’Neill – trace the mayoralty and the evolution of democratic parliamentary and local government through the centuries and dramatically-lit panels list the mayors of Waterford up to the present-day since the firstknown in 1284-85, Roger le Lom.
A Blue Plaque is a permanent sign installed on a building in a public place to commemorate a link between notable figures of the past and the buildings in which they lived or had some connection to. “Ben Hennessy has been using images in his work which reflect a human ambition to strive higher to stretch the imagination to the limits where man’s creative spirit is a triumphant part of how he lives” – Sheila Pratschke – The evocative image of a ‘childlike’ boat has appeared in many of Ben Hennessy’s earlier works, most notably in works presented in San Francisco in the 80’s. In this exciting new collection of oil paintings and vivid watercolours, the boat symbol along with other mythical imagery, as seen in the ‘Journey to Lir’ and ‘Alizarin’ series are reworked to reveal an uncompromising creative narrative that transcends myth and create a compelling visual feast. The highly painterly, new expressionist style – with big gestural marks, bold shapes and the energy of early de Kooning combined with the new development of splitting the canvas into heavily painted surfaces reminiscent of Sean Scully’s large canvases fuse to create bold, dynamic surfaces, making this exhibition a must see visual art event of the year. What is perhaps most striking is the use of delectable colour throughout the show – deep crimsons, vibrant pinks, vivid blues, purple, oranges and luscious ambers. Painted on these epic canvases, colour celebrates its own presence – vibrating and making the paintings hum with their own powerful, unique force. They Called her Vivaldi is an upbeat comedy-adventure about a sensitive musical-prodigy making a quiet name for herself in a cacophonous world until one night her magical, musical hat “Capello” goes missing… Now she must venture out into the noisy city to track down the mysterious Cat Burglar. Along the way she meets a pizza maker with no saltshaker, a gondolier with no oar, a hairdresser with no scissors – all played by high energy Louis Lovett. Her adventure brings her face to face with the sneaky thief and a startling truth about herself. Part comedy, part thriller, this new production is full of beautiful music and hilarious characters, celebrating the power within us all to follow our dreams. As our young heroine journeys over cobblestones and canals, we learn about love, loss, the place of salt in our diet and the courage to lose our footing without losing our way. For ages 7 plus and adults of all ages.

WATERFORD VIKING TRIANGLE EVENT GUIDE
King of the Vikings *
Bishop’s Palace *
Blackfriars *
Waterford’s Viking Triangle will this summer become home of an innovative, state-of-theart spectacular new Viking experience known as ‘King of the Vikings’. For the first time anywhere in the world, a Viking virtual reality adventure will be set in an archaeologicallyaccurate recreation of a 12th-century Waterford Viking house. The house is in the ruins of the 14th century Lady Chapel to the rear of No 10 Baileys New Street, just a twominute walk from Reginald’s Tower. The Lady Chapel and adjoining Franciscan Friary were once the site of the first Viking fort built at Waterford by the famed Reginald, grandson of Ivar and King of All the Vikings of England and Ireland.
Built in 1743 by the renowned Anglo-Indian architect Richard Castle. It is located among a collection of remarkable 18th century buildings in the heart of the Viking Triangle and is immediately opposite the House of Waterford Crystal.
A mid-thirteenth-century Friary built by the Dominican order, inherited its name from the black habits worn by its Friars. The Dominicans first settled in Waterford in 1226 and the site was requested as a gift by the citizens of Waterford. Blackfriars was dissolved in 1540 by order of King Henry VIII. The friary was subsequently used as a courthouse from 1617 and as a theatre in 1746.The Dominicans were an important asset to the city. They were an intellectual order who organised schools and educated the sons of the merchant class. The remains of the tower and gateway are still visible and the space is occasionally used during Waterford city’s various festivals.
With enchanting stories and remarkable insights of the Georgian period , the reenactor guides take you through the grand reception rooms, furnished with the best of Irish 18th century furniture, paintings, silverware and glassware including the oldest piece of historic Waterford glass dating from the 1780’s.
The ‘King of the Vikings’ adventure will complement the exhibition in Reginald’s Tower where are displayed the remarkable treasures of Viking Waterford and of Woodstown, the Viking settlement 5 km upriver that in the 9th century was the largest Viking settlement outside of Scandinavia and the only excavated Viking basecamp (longphort) in Ireland.
Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity *
City Hall *
Christchurch Cathedral *
Designed by John Roberts and built in 1793, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, is Ireland’s oldest Catholic Cathedral. Over the years, the Cathedral has seen many changes; 30 administrators, 21 Bishops of the Diocese and many structural changes. A gift of 10 crystal chandeliers from Waterford Crystal enhanced the decor of the Cathedral.
Designed by John Roberts, The Large Room in City Hall, known in the eighteenth century as the Grand Banqueting Room, has welcomed such notable figures as Daniel O’Connell, Thomas Francis Meagher, Isaac Butt, Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond.
Arguably, the finest 18th Century ecclesiastical building in Ireland, designed by John Roberts, the architect of Georgian Waterford, is a strong example of the elegance of the period, taking on board principles of Neo-Classicism and symmetry, alongside fresh and decorative rococo styling. John Roberts also designed Waterford’s Roman Catholic Cathedral. There has been a Cathedral on this site since 1096. It was on this monumental site of Christ Church in 1170 that Strongbow was married to Aoife, daughter of Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster. This is, therefore one of the most important historic sites in Ireland and a must see on your visit to Waterford Viking Triangle.
In 2000, the square near Barronstrand Street, formerly known as Red Square was renamed as John Roberts Square in light of the influence he had over the architecture of the two Cathedrals in Waterford.
The central chandelier in the chamber, dating from the mid 1780s, is the largest and oldest piece of Waterford glass extant, and was originally commissioned for the Presence Chamber in Dublin Castle, where it hung until 1836.

French Church *
Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery *
House of Waterford Crystal *
Index Gallery at Central Library *
Founded in 1241, French Church often referred to as The Franciscan Friary is one of the earliest Franciscan foundations in Ireland. The elegant ruin of the stone French Church is announced by a statue of Luke Wadding, the Waterford-born Franciscan friar who persuaded the Pope to negotiate with Charles I on behalf of Irish Catholics. Hugh Purcell gave the church to the Franciscans in 1240, asking them in return to pray for him once a day. The church became a hospital after the dissolution of the monasteries, and was then occupied by French Huguenot refugees between 1693 and 1815. John Roberts is buried here, you can see the nave, chancel and an aisle which remain of the original complex, with a fine example of a triple light east window.. Ask the staff at Reginald’s Tower to let you in.
This former Methodist church dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is situated in the heart of the Viking Triangle. Greyfriar’s Municipal Gallery primarily hosts exhibitions of selected artworks from the Waterford Municipal Art Collection which contains over three hundred artworks by some of Ireland’s leading 20th century painters e.g. Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Evie Hone, and Louis Le Brocquy to name but a few. There are year round visiting exhibitions and access is free of charge.
This brand new crystal manufacturing facility and retail outlet in the very heart of Waterford Viking Triangle, melts down 750 tonnes of crystal and produces 45,000 pieces each year using traditional manufacturing techniques. The facility offers guided tours of the manufacturing process to all visitors, both international and domestic. The showroom showcases the largest selection of Waterford Crystal on display in the world.
Located in the foyer of Waterford City Council’s Central Library on Lady Lane, The Index Gallery aims to support the arts and artists in the City by offering a contemporary exhibition space. It hosts regular art exhibitions which reflect the diverse cultural interests of the City, bringing art into the heart of the community. The gallery is equally accessible to amateurs, professionals, community groups and organisations.
Medieval Museum *
Reginald’s Tower *
GOMA Contemporary Gallery *
Theatre Royal *
This architect designed award winning building, brings to life the story of life in the city during the Medieval era and incorporates the stunning 13 and 15th century undercrofts. Among the world class artefacts on display are the 4m-long Great Charter Roll dating from 1372, King Henrys Hat & the 15th century cloth-of-gold vestments – Ireland’s finest late medieval treasures.
This remarkable landmark 12th century building, said to be the oldest civic urban structure in Ireland is named in honour of a Viking. Situated at the apex of the Viking Triangle it houses the treasures of Viking Waterford. On display is the full set of weapons from a Viking warrior’s grave, the only set to survive in Ireland. Also included is the famous 12th century gold and silver Waterford Kite Brooch the finest piece of 12th century secular metal work ever found in Ireland. An imaginative AV presentation on the top floor tells the eleven hundred year old story of the tower from 914 to 2014.
Based in a former sweet factory in Lombard Street, GOMA is Waterford’s foremost contemporary exhibition space. This artistled contemporary gallery has become known for its high profile art exhibitions as well as for being an unusual and versatile space. Following a three month renovation programme the gallery re-opened with a series of exhibitions exploring societal conventions.
Built in 1783, and re modelled in 1876 this is one of the finest horseshoe shaped Victorian Theatres in Ireland, housing 430 seats on 3 levels. In the 220 years since the establishment of the Georgian playhouse which was subsequently adapted in the late nineteenth century to the Theatre Royal we know today, Waterford has been renowned for its local musical and dramatic traditions. The Theatre Royal, often referred to as “the people’s theatre”, has been the traditional venue for this creative activity down through the generations. It hosts a wide variety of performances throughout the year including music, theatre, dance and comedy.

Food Glorious Food Larder Set in the heart of the Viking Triangle and minutes from the Reginald’s Tower, Waterford Museum of Treasures, and the world-famous House of Waterford Crystal, Larder is the said to be heartbeat of the Quayside. An artisan food store with highly qualified in-house baristas, Larder is owned and run by Patrick Murphy. Patrick grew up surrounded by free range chickens and turkeys on his father’s Englishtown Farm but spent many years working for large retail chains before finally deciding to open his own business. According to John & Sally McKenna, (Best in Ireland Guides), “Patrick’s fantastic friendly manner, along with some careful sourcing and a determination that everything must be of the highest quality and local, whenever possible, is what has made Larder an instant success.” McKenna Guides went on to explain, when the decision was made to award the ‘Best in Ireland award for 2016/17 to larder, it was because “best in Ireland means exactly was it says on the plaque. If you see an up-to-date plaque displayed by any establishment, it is your guarantee that the people
involved are providing the very best service possible, whether they are a fishmonger selling at a farmers’ market, or a pub with interesting food, a real bakery, or a hip, happening restaurant.” When asked about the quality of the products Patrick noted that “Larder is lucky to have daily deliveries of freshly baked goods from SpeltBakers in Gowran and Seagull Bakery in Tramore supply the bread including the amazing sourdough loaves. Don’t forget the infamous Portuguese Custard tarts and the seasonal mince pies. Coffee is supplied by Waterford’s own local coffee, the ‘Mean Bean’ brand which Larder brews with pride to make a cracking coffee.” With the winter almost upon us, check out Larder’s delicious home-made soup and bread, just the thing to have on a cold winters day. Larder will be snugly linked beside Santa’s grotto for the Winterval 2017 festival so it’s all HO! HO! HO! Roll on the holidays and larder’s much desired and super delicious mince pies!! Planning Your Next Trip Waterford Greenway
The Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46 km off-road cycling and walking trail along the former Great Southern and Western railway line which runs between Ireland’s oldest city of Waterford and Dungarvan. The Waterford Greenway transports you throughtime and
tide; from Waterford’s Viking City through the Industrial age, along the River Suir, out by Mount Congreve Gardens, through Kilmacthomas, across eleven bridges, over three impressive viaducts and through a 400m long tunnel; with spectacular views of the River Suir, Comeragh Mountains and Dungarvan Bay en route. The railway line opened in 1878 connecting Waterford City with Mallow in County Cork and it was considered to be the most scenic railway route in Ireland. It was in operation for almost 90 years, until the last passenger train on 25th March 1967 – exactly fifty years to the day that the new Waterford Greenway opened! One of the main shareholders in the old railway line was the Duke of Devonshire and it was known locally as the ‘Duke’s Line’ for many years. The route itself has some fascinating heritage attached to it, for example, the viaduct at Ballyvoyle was blown up in 1922 during the War of Independence. The Greenway also passes the site at Woodstown where Vikings from Norway first
settled in Waterford and in Kilmacthomas it goes past the old famine workhouse. Several new businesses have already started up along the Waterford Greenway, including several bike hire companies – there’s even a new Greenway sausage being made by a butcher in Kilmacthomas! The Waterford Greenway has been developed by Waterford City & County Council with the co-operation of local property owners, the support of communities along the route, and with supporting funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. Planning Your Next Trip cont. Madrigallery Chamber Choir Perform - Jubilate Deo
In Honour of Thomas Mackesy
Sat 27 Jan | Time: 8:00pm
College of Surgeons in Ireland, reaching the pinnacle of achievement when he was elected President of the Royal College in 1862. The following year he was honoured by Trinity College Dublin when he was awarded the honorary degree of MD (Doctor of Medicine). In addition to his illustrious medical career, Thomas Mackesy also played a significant role in the civic life of Waterford. He was admitted a freeman of the city in 1826. A member of Waterford Corporation for a number of years, he was elected mayor in 1841-42. He also served as a magistrate and Poor Law guardian. Mackesy was married three times. His first wife, Mary Poulter, died in 1818 and his second wife, Charlotte Vincent, died in 1841. His third wife, Helen Madden, survived him; he died in 1869.
Waterford’s splendid Christ Church Cathedral will host the Irish community choir premiere of Jubilate Deo by Dan Forrest, a choral work that is taking America by storm just like Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man continues to mesmerise audiences in Britain, Ireland and all across Europe.
Thomas Mackesy’s eldest son, with his wife Mary Poulter, Joseph Poulter Mackesy, was born in 1816. Following closely in his father’s footsteps, he too had a distinguished medical career and served as surgeon at the Waterford Leper Hospital. A member of Waterford Corporation, he sought to improve the city’s dreadful sewerage system and to provide clean drinking water for the city’s citizens. Joseph Poulter Mackesy died unexpectedly in 1866.
The soaring, uplifting and soul-stirring composition of Jubilate Deo celebrates the unifying power and beauty of music by presenting its universal message of joy and hope in several world languages including Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic. The very first Irish community choir to take on this this exciting work is Waterford City’s multi award-winning chamber choir Madrigallery. One of the best-loved choirs in Ireland’s Southeast, Madrigallery is renowned for delivering high-end performances in collaboration with professional musicians and soloists from Ireland and beyond, acclaimed productions of Mozart’s Requiem and The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins being only two examples of this. The choir was established in 1991 and has had Kevin O’Carroll as its principal conductor since 1995. Madrigallery has a wide-ranging repertoire from earliest plainchant to works by modern composers, including pieces specifically written for this choir and, of course, Madrigals, which will also be part of this greatly anticipated concert! Madrigallery’s long-standing commitment to excellence has led to reviewers and audiences showering the choir with superlatives such as “Magnificent”, “Outstanding”, “Hypnotic”, “Spellbinding” Awards Waterford News & Star Green Room Awards 2016. “Choir of the Year” and “Concert of the Year” Christ Church Cathedral | christchurchwaterford.com contact@christchurchwaterford@gmail.com +353 (0) 51 858958 | Price: Free
Two of Joseph Poulter Mackesy’s sons continued the family tradition and pursued medical and political careers. William Lewis Mackesy served as a surgeon in the Leper Hospital, while his other son, George Ivie Mackesy, also served as a surgeon in the Leper Hospital and as Mayor of Waterford, 1879-80.
“Four generations of the Mackesy family gave over 130 years of service in the medical profession & contributed at least two mayors to the city.” Waterford Civic Trust will unveil a blue plaque at 21 Lady Lane, honouring Dr Thomas Mackesy, a distinguished Waterford born surgeon. He was a member of a family which formed something of a medical and political dynasty in nineteenth century Waterford. Thomas Mackesy was born in 1790, the son of William Mackesy, a distinguished apothecary, who resided at 4 The Mall. Thomas received his diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1809, and joined the army. He saw active service in the Peninsular War (1807-1814) and the Napoleonic Wars, which began in 1803, and was involved in the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Returning to Waterford, he enjoyed great success in his medical career. He was appointed as surgeon in the Leper Hospital and also developed a very successful private practice. In 1844 he became a Fellow of the Royal
Thus four generations of the Mackesy family gave over 130 years of service in the medical profession and contributed at least two mayors to the city. The blue plaque, to be unveiled early 2018, in honour of Thomas Mackesy, remembers a once distinguished citizen of this city, and also reminds us of a remarkable family, the members of which graced the medical, political and civic life of Waterford.
