#BitForTheBid
In 2010 Waterford city council began the process of breathing life back into this historic quarter with the launch of the Viking Triangle and the start of an ambitious investment plan. The journey continues and in just a few short years, the Viking Triangle has become a vibrant place to live, work and visit, with a host of things to do and places to eat and relax. Standing majestically at the apex of the Viking triangle sits Reginald’s Tower, the oldest civic urban structure in Ireland. It is alleged that it was in the tower that Strongbow met Aoife daughter of the King of Leinster Dermot MacMurrough and their subsequent marriage at Christ Church Cathedral in the city was to change Irish History for ever. Follow the pretty medieval streets to unlock over 1000 years of history in 1000 paces with nine national monuments and three world class museums; Viking, Medieval & Georgian. See the Theatre Royal, our breathtaking horseshoe shaped Victorian Theatre located next to City Hall on the Mall and discover the rich craft heritage behind the global brand Waterford Crystal which showcases the largest collection of Waterford Crystal in the world. We welcome you to our Viking Triangle at the heart of our city and county, a jewel in the crown of Ireland’s Ancient East.

Cap of Maintenance of King Henry VIII the revolt in 1535. As a result, the former mayor of Waterford, William Wyse – appointed to the royal court in London at this time – was sent back by the king to Waterford on 30 April 1536, with a Cap of Maintenance as a gift. The king instructed that it was to be carried before the Mayor of Waterford on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of the king’s high esteem for the city. A Cap of Maintenance was symbolically carried before the king on his way to coronation.
The Cap of Maintenance was a gift from King Henry VIII to the Mayor of Waterford, which was received in April 1536. The fact that an item as fragile as the red velvet Cap should survive for over four and a half centuries is remarkable. Through all the vicissitudes of the wars of religion and conquest, it is extraordinary how an item of such posterity, one so intimately connected to one of the most notorious monarchs in European history, should survive here in Waterford. The red velvet Cap of Maintenance is embroidered with Tudor roses and marguerites (daisies). The embroidered roses represented the red rose of England, the symbol of the Tudor monarchy. The daisy, or marguerite, was
the emblem of Henry’s grandmother, the famous Margaret of Beaufort. There can be little doubt that the cap was made in London but the velvet was made almost certainly in Lucca in Italy. The dye used to create the red colour came from the kermes beetle found only in Egypt. Remarkably, the Cap is the only piece of clothing to survive that belonged to either King Henry VIII or any of his predecessors. Waterford was granted the Cap of Maintenance as a symbol of its continued and steadfast loyalty to the crown. In 1534, Silken Thomas, Earl of Kildare, rebelled against the king. In refusing to support the rebellion Henry was able to send royal troops to the loyal port of Waterford and subsequently quashed
For centuries the cap was carried before the mayor, with the tradition only ending in 1920 with the election of Dr. Vincent White. Fortunately, succeeding generations understood its historic significance and the Cap was relegated to the secure vault in City Hall. In 1998 it was conserved and prepared for exhibition at Waterford Treasures at the Granary; and when the new Medieval Museum opened in 2012, it was put on display in a specially constructed circular showcase. The Cap is a link with a time in our city’s history when Waterford was on the crest of a wave and held in high esteem by one of the most powerful monarchs in Europe. “EAT Waterford”, the definitive guide to dining in Waterford, puts the spotlight on the city as an exciting food tourism destination. EAT Waterford offers locals and visitors alike a comprehensive insight into the world class dining experience available in the city and surrounds. The informative guide provides details such as theme, price range, menu options, and accessibility on a broad range of Waterford restaurants. The restaurants involved in the initiative range from
classical French fine dining to traditional Asian cuisine and casual American style dining to time-honoured fresh Irish fayre. EAT Waterford is the brainchild of Fiona McHardy, CEO of The Viking Triangle, Waterford’s cultural and heritage quarter. Fiona said, “This collaboration is an exciting example of the strength of coworking and what can be achieved by businesses who ordinarily compete with each other to attract visitors to our city. In essence, the businesses, tourists and locals will all benefit”.
EAT Waterford restaurant members are dedicated to highlighting the role that local producers play and as a result developed a very unique and successful 5 course tasting menu for Harvest Festival 2015. All of the restaurants are ardent supporters of artisan producers and there is currently an exciting cohort of local producers who supply these restaurants in Waterford. The home of the blaa, rashers and even the humble cream cracker has inspired a generation of producers of great meat, seafood, breads,
vegetables, beer and spirits.

Waterford Viking Marathon scheduled for 25 June is the biggest and best running event in the South East of Ireland... Is 2016 your year to take part in the Waterford Viking Marathon? Then get those runners polished up and that running kit in order. The 2016 event will include a full marathon, half marathon and quarter marathon options - a challenge for all levels! WVM’s Event Manager Roisin Ferris says “WVM will be actively encouraging workplaces in Waterford, making up teams of three and we have wonderful club and company prizes to reward those that make the effort”. So whether you’re a Garda, Nurse, Postman or office worker with a love of running, you are encouraged to get recruiting. If six legs are better than two, then what nicer way to take in the ancient streets of Waterford, scenic Tramore and a finishing lap at the RSC than with your dedicated relay team on June 25th.
Kelly’s research into wasteland and abandoned spaces alludes to isolation and the interim. Her observations of the man-made landscape, topographic movement, stagnation and metamorphosing debris become representations; characters in contemporary fables who narrate a legacy of the interim, disposability and the Anthropocene.
The rally organisers are indebted to all of their commercial supporters, the residents and land owners along the rally route who so generously support and tolerate the annual event.

This centenary year, Ireland 2016 presents Mná 1916 – Women 1916, a very special exhibition telling the stories of 300 of Ireland’s mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives involved in the 1916 Rising. Visitors to the exhibition can explore this remarkable collection of previously unseen items, from personal objects, images and documentation, to newly digitised birth, death, marriage and census records from private and public collections.
Now in its 5th year, the Viking marathon has just been shortlisted as a finalist for Running Ireland’s ‘Marathon of The Year.’ This will no doubt attract even more than the 2,200 runners who took part last year
Mná 1916 – Women 1916 is lovingly curated by Sinead McCoole as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, an author and historian whose collaborations and expertise in many areas of Irish civil history, including the Rising, have been received with acclaim both at home and abroad. Enhanced by material from the Military Archives, the National Library of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland, it’s a loving and fitting tribute to the resilience and ability of those previously considered the ‘fairer’ sex.

Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery *
House of Waterford Crystal *
Index Gallery at Central Library *
Built in 1743 by the renowned AngloIndian architect Richard Castle. It is located among a collection of remarkable 18th century buildings in the heart of the Viking Triangle and is immediately opposite the House of Waterford Crystal.
A mid-thirteenth-century Friary built by the Dominican order, inherited its name from the black habits worn by its Friars. The Dominicans first settled in Waterford in 1226 and the site was requested as a gift by the citizens of Waterford. Blackfriars was dissolved in 1540 by order of King Henry VIII. The friary was subsequently used as a courthouse from 1617 and as a theatre in 1746.The Dominicans were an important asset to the city. They were an intellectual order who organised schools and educated the sons of the merchant class. The remains of the tower and gateway are still visible and the space is occasionally used during Waterford city’s various festivals.
Founded in 1241, French Church often referred to as The Franciscan Friary is one of the earliest Franciscan foundations in Ireland. The elegant ruin of the stone French Church is announced by a statue of Luke Wadding, the Waterford-born Franciscan friar who persuaded the Pope to negotiate with Charles I on behalf of Irish Catholics. Hugh Purcell gave the church to the Franciscans in 1240, asking them in return to pray for him once a day. The church became a hospital after the dissolution of the monasteries, and was then occupied by French Huguenot refugees between 1693 and 1815. John Roberts is buried here, you can see the nave, chancel and an aisle which remain of the original complex, with a fine example of a triple light east window.. Ask the staff at Reginald’s Tower to let you in.
This former Methodist church dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is situated in the heart of the Viking Triangle. Greyfriar’s Municipal Gallery primarily hosts exhibitions of selected artworks from the Waterford Municipal Art Collection which contains over three hundred artworks by some of Ireland’s leading 20th century painters e.g. Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Evie Hone, and Louis Le Brocquy to name but a few. There are year round visiting exhibitions and access is free of charge
This brand new crystal manufacturing facility and retail outlet in the very heart of Waterford Viking Triangle, melts down 750 tonnes of crystal and produces 45,000 pieces each year using traditional manufacturing techniques. The facility offers guided tours of the manufacturing process to all visitors, both international and domestic. The showroom showcases the largest selection of Waterford Crystal on display in the world.
Located in the foyer of Waterford City Council’s Central Library on Lady Lane, The Index Gallery aims to support the arts and artists in the City by offering a contemporary exhibition space. It hosts regular art exhibitions which reflect the diverse cultural interests of the City, bringing art into the heart of the community. The gallery is equally accessible to amateurs, professionals, community groups and organisations.
With enchanting stories and remarkable insights of the Georgian period , the reenactor guides take you through the grand reception rooms, furnished with the best of Irish 18th century furniture, paintings, silverware and glassware including the oldest piece of historic Waterford glass dating from the 1780’s.
Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity *
City Hall *
Christchurch Cathedral *
Medieval Museum *
Reginald’s Tower *
SOMA Contemporary Gallery *
Theatre Royal *
Designed by John Roberts and built in 1793, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, is Ireland’s oldest Catholic Cathedral. Over the years, the Cathedral has seen many changes; 30 administrators, 21 Bishops of the Diocese and many structural changes. A gift of 10 crystal chandeliers from Waterford Crystal enhanced the decor of the Cathedral.
Designed by John Roberts, The Large Room in City Hall, known in the eighteenth century as the Grand Banqueting Room, has welcomed such notable figures as Daniel O’Connell, Thomas Francis Meagher, Isaac Butt, Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond.
Arguably, the finest 18th Century ecclesiastical building in Ireland, designed by John Roberts, the architect of Georgian Waterford, is a strong example of the elegance of the period, taking on board principles of Neo-Classicism and symmetry, alongside fresh and decorative rococo styling. John Roberts also designed Waterford’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.
This architect designed award winning building, brings to life the story of life in the city during the Medieval era and incorporates the stunning 13 and 15th century undercrofts. Among the world class artefacts on display are the 4m-long Great Charter Roll dating from 1372, King Henrys Hat & the 15th century cloth-ofgold vestments – Ireland’s finest late medieval treasures.
This remarkable landmark 12th century building, said to be the oldest civic urban structure in Ireland is named in honour of a Viking. Situated at the apex of the Viking Triangle it houses the treasures of Viking Waterford. On display is the full set of weapons from a Viking warrior’s grave, the only set to survive in Ireland. Also included is the famous 12th century gold and silver Waterford Kite Brooch the finest piece of 12th century secular metal work ever found in Ireland. An imaginative AV presentation on the top floor tells the eleven hundred year old story of the tower from 914 to 2014.
Based in a former sweet factory in Lombard Street, SOMA is Waterford’s foremost contemporary exhibition space. This artist-led contemporary gallery has become known for its high profile art exhibitions as well as for being an unusual and versatile space. Following a three month renovation programme the gallery re-opened with a series of exhibitions exploring societal conventions.
Built in 1783, and re modelled in 1876 this is one of the finest horseshoe shaped Victorian Theatres in Ireland, housing 430 seats on 3 levels. In the 220 years since the establishment of the Georgian playhouse which was subsequently adapted in the late nineteenth century to the Theatre Royal we know today, Waterford has been renowned for its local musical and dramatic traditions. The Theatre Royal, often referred to as “the people’s theatre”, has been the traditional venue for this creative activity down through the generations. It hosts a wide variety of performances throughout the year including music, theatre, dance and comedy.
In 2000, the square near Barronstrand Street, formerly known as Red Square was re-named as John Roberts Square in light of the influence he had over the architecture of the two Cathedrals in Waterford.
The central chandelier in the chamber, dating from the mid 1780s, is the largest and oldest piece of Waterford glass extant, and was originally commissioned for the Presence Chamber in Dublin Castle, where it hung until 1836.
There has been a Cathedral on this site since 1096. It was on this monumental site of Christ Church in 1170 that Strongbow was married to Aoife, daughter of Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster. This is, therefore one of the most important historic sites in Ireland and a must see on your visit to Waterford Viking Triangle.
