Highlights

The Return of the Vikings Waterford’s Viking Triangle will this April become home of an innovative, state-ofthe-art spectacular new Viking experience know as ‘King of the Vikings’ For the first time anywhere in the world, a virtual reality Viking adventure will be set in an archaeologically-accurate recreation of a 12th-century Viking house. The house will be located in the ruins of the 14th century Lady Chapel to the rear of No. 10 Bailey’s New Street, just a two-minute walk from Reginald’s Tower. The Lady Chapel and adjoining Franciscan Friary were once the site of the first Viking fort built at Waterford by the famed Reginald, the grandson of Ivarr. The ‘King of the Vikings’ adventure will compliment the exhibition in Reginald’s Tower where there is on display the remarkable treasures of Viking Waterford and of Woodstown, the Viking settlement 5 kilometres up river, that in the 9th century was the largest Viking settlement outside of Scandinavia. On entering the reconstructed Viking house, visitors are greeted by a re-enactor guide who regales them with stories of life in Viking Waterford. The guide then invites the visitor to put on ‘magic goggles’ that will transport them back 1,100 years to

Academy of Urbanism

the time of Reginald the grandson of Ivarr who founded Waterford, re-established Viking Dublin and made himself king of York, the greatest Viking city in 10th century Europe. This new experience will appeal to everyone from the age of seven to ninety seven and is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors in the first year of operation. The project is being jointly funded by Fáilte Ireland and Waterford City and County Council and is an initiative of Waterford Museum of Treasures. With its very clever combination of archaeological and historical research combined with the most up-to-date technology, the King of the Vikings adventure is destined to become a must-see attraction in Ireland’s Ancient East. Emagine based in William Street, Waterford, have developed the technology behind the stunning Virtual Reality experience that literally brings the visitor up close and personal with the Viking warlords that founded not just Waterford but Ireland’s first towns and cities. This new attraction is destined to change the nature of visitor attractions in Waterford and the entire country, with its unique combination of sound research and breathtaking new technology.

Waterford’s Viking Triangle enjoyed fantastic success winning The Great Place category at the Urbanism Awards 2017 held in London earlier this year. The award is one of five given out annually by The Academy of Urbanism to recognise the best, most enduring or most improved cities, towns, neighbourhoods, streets and places. Voted on by Academicians, who include leading architects, planners and developers, each award looks at a number of social, economic and environmental factors, including good governance and commercial success. Waterford won against formidable contenders; Greenwich Market, London & Leicester Market, Leicester. The Viking Triangle is one of the oldest and most notable high quality urban districts in Ireland and has countless historic visitor attractions within. “Supported by a strong historical narrative and harnessing the best of their assets, their [Waterford Viking Triangle] strategy has been simple yet effective. Public funding has served as a catalyst and with local buy-in this has led to an improved perception of the area. In turn this has enhanced the quality of life and competitiveness of local business which is leading to private sector investment.”- Nick Childs, Lead Assessor Academy of Urbanism The Academy of Urbanism is a politically independent, not-for-profit organisation that brings together both the current and next generation of urban leaders, thinkers and practitioners. The Economic Development team at Waterford City and County Council are delighted to be associated with the Academy and the European wide recognition which follows such an award. The Forward Planning team led by Mr. Rupert Maddock, Senior Architect commends the work of the many teams involved and the wider community all of whom have played a strong and vibrant role in the living initiative that is Waterford’s Viking Triangle.

Waterford Civic Trust - Blue Plaque Trail WCT was set up in 1990 to pursue a range of objectives centred on the renewal of historical buildings and the enhancement of the architectural heritage of Waterford. The Waterford Civic Trust promotes civic pride as a means of improving the quality of life for all and encourages community action, good design, sustainable development and respect for the built environment amongst people of all ages. A Blue Plaque is a permanent sign installed on a building in a public place to commemorate a link between notable figures of the past and the buildings in which they lived or had some connection to. It is a unique way to highlight these special achievements and celebrate those who have helped to shape our heritage and history. The blue plaques are markers which we hope will inspire all those who pass by. Few can resist glancing at a blue plaque to see what it says. Was someone famous born here? Is there something unusual about this ordinarylooking building? Or did it play an important part in the history of the place? Blue Plaques are dedicated to people from many different walks of life, from statesmen to sportsmen, Architect’s, and Composers. The Penrose Family & Waterford Glass On display at the Bishop’s Palace is the largest collection of historic Waterford glass in the world. Among the items on display is the famous Penrose Decanter which was made in 1789 and has the words ‘Penrose Waterford’ moulded on the base. It has a wide pouring lip – a common trait in early Penrose decanters.

1787 at an early age from liver disease, allegedly brought about by ‘an excessive consumption of claret’. However during that time he was responsible for the renovation of Dublin Castle and included in this project was the conversion of the battle axe hall of the castle into a presence chamber.

The glass factory in Waterford was established by George Penrose and his nephew William in 1783, and it was in operation until 1851. The glass produced in Waterford was so prized for the quality of its craftsmanship that the National Museum of Ireland began to acquire examples from as early as 1880.

The architect responsible for the works at the castle was Thomas Penrose, a kinsman of George and William Penrose of the Waterford glass manufactory. Thomas Penrose was born in 1740 and he is associated with a number of projects in the Waterford area. As well was continuing in private practice Thomas Penrose was employed by the Dublin Wide Streets Commissioners and in April 1784 he was appointed Inspector of Civil Buildings, the same year as the Duke of Rutland’s appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. It was in his capacity as Inspector of Civil Buildings that Thomas Penrose oversaw the refurbishment of Dublin Castle in the 1780s.

George and William Penrose were Quakers and in the latter half of the 18th century were among the chief merchants of the city, dominating the overseas provisions trade. By the 1780s they had accumulated considerable wealth from their various business interests and were seeking suitable investment opportunities. They were entrepreneurs who had dabbled in many commercial enterprises, including pork and timber with considerable success. Their decision to invest in a glass factory in Waterford was prompted by the fact that by 1780 the prohibitive excise duties imposed on Irish-manufactured glass were removed while at the same time the excise duty imposed on glass manufactured in England was doubled. Neither of the Penroses knew anything about glass making. They initially invested the enormous sum of £10,000 in the Waterford factory and employed the renowned English glass maker, John Hill to manage the factory and recruit other skilled workers from England. John Hill was also a Quaker. The opening of the factory was mentioned in the Dublin Evening Post with the announcement that the ‘Waterford Glass House’ was ‘ready to receive orders’ and was manufacturing ‘all kinds of plain and cut flint glass’. By 1784 the Penroses claimed that they could produce flint glass ‘as fine a quality as any in Europe’ and that they could supply ‘every article in the most elegant style’. Following the establishment of the glass manufactory in Waterford city by George and William Penrose in 1783 the fledgling industry obtained a number of prestige commissions which no doubt contributed to the early commercial success of the industry. Perhaps the most important of these early commissions was the thirtytwo light chandelier commissioned by the Duke of Rutland for Dublin Castle in 1786. Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland (1754-1787) was made Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1784. Rutland’s period in office was short, dying in October

The centrepiece of the Presence Chamber in Dublin Castle was the thirty-two light chandelier made in Waterford. Described by James Malton, a draughtsman who worked with James Gandon in Dublin as ‘an elegant glass lustre of the Waterford manufactory; purchased by the late Duke

of Rutland, when Lord Lieutenant, on his visiting the city; which cost two hundred and seventy-seven pounds’ It is not surprising that the commission for the chandelier went to the Waterford manufactory considering the fact that Thomas Penrose was responsible for most of the works in Dublin Castle. The sum of £277 spent on the piece would have been very important for the developing business as well as the patronage of the duke, who as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland was the king’s representative in the kingdom. The Duke of Rutland died in 1787 before the presence chamber in Dublin Castle was completed. In 1825 the refurbished chamber was described as follows, ‘the Presence Chamber, where stands the throne erected for George IV, from the ceiling of this apartment hangs a magnificent glass lustre, the gift of the Duke of Rutland, which was purchased at the celebrated glass manufactory in Waterford’. Following further refurbishment at the castle in the nineteenth century the chandelier was brought to Waterford where it now hangs in the Council Chamber of City Hall on the Mall. Waterford Greenway Opens The Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46 km off-road cycling and walking trail along the former Great Southern and Western railway line which runs between Ireland’s oldest city of Waterford and Dungarvan. The Waterford Greenway transports you through time and tide; from Waterford’s Viking City through the Industrial age, along the River Suir, out by Mount Congreve Gardens, through Kilmacthomas, across eleven bridges, over three impressive viaducts and through a 400m long tunnel; with spectacular views of the River Suir, Comeragh Mountains and Dungarvan Bay en route. The railway line opened in 1878 connecting Waterford City with Mallow in County Cork and it was considered to be the most scenic railway route in Ireland. It was in operation for almost 90 years, until the last passenger train on 25th March 1967 – exactly fifty years to the day that the new Waterford Greenway opened! One of the main shareholders in the old railway line was the Duke of Devonshire and it was known locally as

the ‘Duke’s Line’ for many years. The route itself has some fascinating heritage attached to it, for example, the viaduct at Ballyvoyle was blown up in 1922 during the War of Independence. The Greenway also passes the site at Woodstown where Vikings from Norway first settled in Waterford and in Kilmacthomas it goes past the old famine workhouse. Several new businesses have already started up along the Waterford Greenway, including several bike hire companies – there’s even a new Greenway sausage being made by a butcher in Kilmacthomas! The Waterford Greenway has been developed by Waterford City & County Council with the co-operation of local property owners, the support of communities along the route, and with supporting funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. The Old & the Weary Thurs 9 Mar – Sun 30 April Time: Opening 6.30pm - 9th March A solo exhibition, is by Ben Reilly, who has a way with material that confounds initial impressions. A self-described Magpie, he collects, casts and recombines objects that are ‘shiny’ to him and are drawn from various historical moments, ranging from dusty Victorian to 1950’s kitsch. These objects are often symbolically potent; blimps, skulls and guns, but although they appear at first glance to be weighty and metallic, they are in fact made from densely pigmented wax. Undercutting the darkness of his work – literal darkness, as much of the pieces are rendered in dense, light absorbing black – is an irreverent, subversive humour. WATERFORD VIKING TRIANGLE EVENT GUIDE

Special Events Art on the Railings

Saturdays - Dates TBC | Time: 11:00pm – 4:00pm

The Joy Bells

March 19th | Time: Following 10:00am service

Religion, Reform, Identity: Ireland and the Age of Reformation Saturday 20 May | Time: Check Website

Calling all artists to get involved in colouring the city streets during the summer months by joining ‘Art on the Railings Waterford,’ 2017. Put simply, we’re looking for artists to hang their artwork from as many spaces as possible in the Viking Triangle and surrounding areas on four Saturdays over the summer months from 11am to 4pm, dates TBC. The aim of the exhibition is to give artists the opportunity to connect and build the art community within the city. We are calling artists groups, collectives, individuals, students and established artists together to add to the vibrancy to the city by exhibiting as one giant collective on one Saturday each month from June to September. We are using the festival dates to utilize the footfall of visitors to the area, therefore maximising the visibility of the artworks and sales opportunities. Artists of all levels are invited to take part and spaces will be reserved on a first come first served basis. The organisers will accommodate as many mediums as possible so if you can find a way to hang your work we want you to be part of the gathering. If you enjoy being surrounded by lovely art, please come out and support ‘Art on The Railings Waterford’ in the summer by viewing, having a chat with and maybe even buying a piece of art from the artists! Be part of a stunning outdoor exhibition by brightening up the city as fresh-air alternative to a conventional art gallery.

On March 19th 2017 Dr. Mary McAleese, (previous President of Ireland) will launch the ‘Joy Bells’ following the 10am service at Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford. In the summer of 2014, a fascist demonstration was organised in the area surrounding Västerås Cathedral in Sweden. As the rally began, the cathedral bells tolled loud and clear over the city, drowning out the sounds of hate and racism. It is time for the Christian message of love to raise its voice in protest and make a call to solidarity... in that there is joy, justice and hope for the future. At a time when there is worldwide fear and disquiet, we will use this opportunity to peal a very different message, inviting communities at home and abroad to ring their bells on that day in protest and in hope. Bells sound alarm but also a gathering of people for good. They are part of many cultures and religions, ringing out the old and bringing in the new. An invitation is going out from the Joy Bells of Waterford to all churches with bells on this island, to schools and wherever people gather, to ring out the bells on March 19th at 11am. Together, we hope to make a different sound:

A day of public lectures in Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford, 20th May 2017 Speakers Include: 1.Dr Aine Hensey, Irish Association of Professional Historians 2.Professor Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin, University College Dublin 3.Professor John McCafferty, Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute, University College Dublin

- Ringing out xenophobia and racism

4.Professor Marc Caball, University College Dublin.: ‘Religion and culture in seventeenth-century Ireland: the case of William Bedell (1571-1642), bishop of Kilmore’

- Ringing in solidarity, truth and justice

5.Professor Ivar McGrath, University College Dublin

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me 19th - 22nd April | Time: 8:00pm

Mayors through the Ages, Eight Centuries of Civic Government in Ireland Monday - Saturday | 9:30 - 6pm

Celebrating their fourth year as a theatre production company, Waterford’s very own Beretta Productions return with their third staged production, Frank McGuinness’s classic ‘Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me.’ Having tread the boards in 2015 in Garter Lane to great reviews and appreciative audiences the cast have decided to try their hand one more time with this dark and, at times, comic tale in Central Arts for a four night run. Based on the true story of three hostages held against their will in eighties Lebanon, McGuinness has penned a powerful dramatic play combining poignancy, tragedy and humour. The characters, a Northern Irish man an American and an English man, at times battle with their cultural differences but their instinct for survival forces them to realise they are stronger together. Their imprisonment forces them to explore the power of imagination to escape the daily fear, despair and boredom; making this a play not to be missed! Directed by Clare Smith and starring Darren Malone, Tim Fardey and Dean Sullivan. Central Arts | www.centralarts.ie centralartswaterford@gmail.com +353 (0)51 874 402 | Price: €10

The exhibition was opened by the then Mayor of the City and County of Waterford, Councillor John Cummins who commented at the launch, ‘When you walk into the room that we are now naming the Mayors Gallery you can, to quote Tony Blair, feel the hand of

Waterford Greenway *

Bishop’s Palace *

Blackfriars *

The Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46 km off-road cycling and walking trail along the former Great Southern and Western railway line which runs between Ireland’s oldest city of Waterford and Dungarvan.

Built in 1743 by the renowned AngloIndian architect Richard Castle. It is located among a collection of remarkable 18th century buildings in the heart of the Viking Triangle and is immediately opposite the House of Waterford Crystal.

With enchanting stories and remarkable insights of the Georgian period , the reenactor guides take you through the grand reception rooms, furnished with the best of Irish 18th century furniture, paintings, silverware and glassware including the oldest piece of historic Waterford glass dating from the 1780’s.

A mid-thirteenth-century Friary built by the Dominican order, inherited its name from the black habits worn by its Friars. The Dominicans first settled in Waterford in 1226 and the site was requested as a gift by the citizens of Waterford. Blackfriars was dissolved in 1540 by order of King Henry VIII. The friary was subsequently used as a courthouse from 1617 and as a theatre in 1746.The Dominicans were an important asset to the city. They were an intellectual order who organised schools and educated the sons of the merchant class. The remains of the tower and gateway are still visible and the space is occasionally used during Waterford city’s various festivals.

Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity *

City Hall *

Christchurch Cathedral *

Designed by John Roberts and built in 1793, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, is Ireland’s oldest Catholic Cathedral. Over the years, the Cathedral has seen many changes; 30 administrators, 21 Bishops of the Diocese and many structural changes. A gift of 10 crystal chandeliers from Waterford Crystal enhanced the decor of the Cathedral.

Designed by John Roberts, The Large Room in City Hall, known in the eighteenth century as the Grand Banqueting Room, has welcomed such notable figures as Daniel O’Connell, Thomas Francis Meagher, Isaac Butt, Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond.

Arguably, the finest 18th Century ecclesiastical building in Ireland, designed by John Roberts, the architect of Georgian Waterford, is a strong example of the elegance of the period, taking on board principles of Neo-Classicism and symmetry, alongside fresh and decorative rococo styling. John Roberts also designed Waterford’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

In 2000, the square near Barronstrand Street, formerly known as Red Square was re-named as John Roberts Square in light of the influence he had over the architecture of the two Cathedrals in Waterford.

The central chandelier in the chamber, dating from the mid 1780s, is the largest and oldest piece of Waterford glass extant, and was originally commissioned for the Presence Chamber in Dublin Castle, where it hung until 1836.

There has been a Cathedral on this site since 1096. It was on this monumental site of Christ Church in 1170 that Strongbow was married to Aoife, daughter of Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster. This is, therefore one of the most important historic sites in Ireland and a must see on your visit to Waterford Viking Triangle.

Index Gallery at Central Library *

Founded in 1241, French Church often referred to as The Franciscan Friary is one of the earliest Franciscan foundations in Ireland. The elegant ruin of the stone French Church is announced by a statue of Luke Wadding, the Waterford-born Franciscan friar who persuaded the Pope to negotiate with Charles I on behalf of Irish Catholics. Hugh Purcell gave the church to the Franciscans in 1240, asking them in return to pray for him once a day. The church became a hospital after the dissolution of the monasteries, and was then occupied by French Huguenot refugees between 1693 and 1815. John Roberts is buried here, you can see the nave, chancel and an aisle which remain of the original complex, with a fine example of a triple light east window.. Ask the staff at Reginald’s Tower to let you in.

This former Methodist church dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is situated in the heart of the Viking Triangle. Greyfriar’s Municipal Gallery primarily hosts exhibitions of selected artworks from the Waterford Municipal Art Collection which contains over three hundred artworks by some of Ireland’s leading 20th century painters e.g. Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Evie Hone, and Louis Le Brocquy to name but a few. There are year round visiting exhibitions and access is free of charge

This brand new crystal manufacturing facility and retail outlet in the very heart of Waterford Viking Triangle, melts down 750 tonnes of crystal and produces 45,000 pieces each year using traditional manufacturing techniques. The facility offers guided tours of the manufacturing process to all visitors, both international and domestic. The showroom showcases the largest selection of Waterford Crystal on display in the world.

Located in the foyer of Waterford City Council’s Central Library on Lady Lane, The Index Gallery aims to support the arts and artists in the City by offering a contemporary exhibition space. It hosts regular art exhibitions which reflect the diverse cultural interests of the City, bringing art into the heart of the community. The gallery is equally accessible to amateurs, professionals, community groups and organisations.

Among the world class artefacts on display are the 4m-long Great Charter Roll dating from 1372, King Henrys Hat & the 15th century cloth-ofgold vestments – Ireland’s finest late medieval treasures.

This remarkable landmark 12th century building, said to be the oldest civic urban structure in Ireland is named in honour of a Viking. Situated at the apex of the Viking Triangle it houses the treasures of Viking Waterford. On display is the full set of weapons from a Viking warrior’s grave, the only set to survive in Ireland. Also included is the famous 12th century gold and silver Waterford Kite Brooch the finest piece of 12th century secular metal work ever found in Ireland. An imaginative AV presentation on the top floor tells the eleven hundred year old story of the tower from 914 to 2014.

Based in a former sweet factory in Lombard Street, GOMA is Waterford’s foremost contemporary exhibition space. This artist-led contemporary gallery has become known for its high profile art exhibitions as well as for being an unusual and versatile space. Following a three month renovation programme the gallery re-opened with a series of exhibitions exploring societal conventions.

Built in 1783, and re modelled in 1876 this is one of the finest horseshoe shaped Victorian Theatres in Ireland, housing 430 seats on 3 levels. In the 220 years since the establishment of the Georgian playhouse which was subsequently adapted in the late nineteenth century to the Theatre Royal we know today, Waterford has been renowned for its local musical and dramatic traditions. The Theatre Royal, often referred to as “the people’s theatre”, has been the traditional venue for this creative activity down through the generations. It hosts a wide variety of performances throughout the year including music, theatre, dance and comedy.

Is there something unusual about this ordinary-looking building? Or did it play an important part in the history of the place? Blue Plaques are dedicated to people from many different walks of life, from statesmen to sportsmen, Architect’s, and Composers. The Festival, devoted to Street Art has become a firm favourite amongst locals and tourists alike and attracts an over 100,000 people to Waterford City over its three days. So much so there is no longer an August Bank Holiday Weekend in Waterford, it’s now better known locally as “The Spraoi Weekend”.

The Waterford Walls project, a visual street art festival was founded in the heart of Waterford City in 2015. 25 derelict buildings throughout the City were transformed by beautiful pieces of art created by renowned local, national and international artists. Preparations are already underway for Waterford Walls this year, planned for August. In addition to the 25 mural artworks, there will be a range of workshops, live demos and food trails. Exciting new elements to this year’s programme will be public art installations by local primary children as well as indoor and outdoor music taking place right across the city.

Daytripper returns to Waterford City centre for Year 5 with a new site at the Gasworks on the Waterside and a new date, the last weekend of August. The first headline act to be announced are UB40 (featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey) for Saturday, 26 August. Daytripper Music Director, Mick O’ Keeffe, commented ‘when Ali reformed UB40 with Astro & Mickey in 2015, we were the first festival to offer them a headline slot and they really enjoyed the show as did the sell-out crowd who attended at Bolton Street. The band are touring their new Greatest Hits set in 2017 with huge outdoor shows across the USA, Europe, Australia/ New Zealand and 12 major UK racecourse, arena and stadium dates. Tickets for UB40 at Daytripper 2017 will be on sale from 9am on Friday 3 March from Daytripper.ie and the Theatre Royal Box Office.
