HEAD COACH DANNY WINGATE MALONE COLLEGE, ‘97 EMAIL: DWINGATE@URBANA.EDU PHONE: 937.484.1392 Urbana University Athletic Director Doug Young announced the hiring of Danny Wingate as the Blue Knights’ new head women’s basketball coach in May of 2013. “We are excited to bring Danny’s leadership into our women’s basketball program,” said Young upon the announcement. “He brings a wealth of experience, and he has proven over time that he has the ability to win at the collegiate level. We see nothing but great things for the future of our women’s basketball program under Danny’s leadership." “I am extremely excited to join the Urbana University family,” added Wingate. “My relationship with UU goes back to my playing days at Malone. I am very familiar with the University, and the surrounding Urbana community and I am excited to get started.”
After graduating from Malone, Wingate earned his Master’s Degree in Higher Education at Geneva College. Later, Wingate served as an assistant women’s basketball coach for Judson University in Elgin, Illinois for two years. His first head coaching position came at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois, where he coached the women’s basketball program for three seasons.
HEAD COACH
Wingate played one season of Division I basketball at the University of Tennessee-Martin. After that, the Wooster, Ohio native played three seasons at Malone, where he earned All-American status on the court. Wingate graduated from Malone in 1997 with a degree in communications and public relations. He appeared in Sports Illustrated in 1995 after scoring 53 points in a game against Wilberforce, still a school record. Despite playing just three seasons for the Pioneers, Wingate ended his career as one of Malone’s Top 20 all-time scorers with 1,237 career points.
In 2003, he took the head women’s basketball job at Missouri Baptist University. Missouri Baptist is a private, NAIA school from the American Midwest Conference in suburban St. Louis. During Wingate’s 8 seasons at the helm, the team claimed its first ever conference title and made its program debut in the NAIA’s National Tournament. Over his collegiate coaching career, Wingate has coached 5 All-Americans, and three of his players have gone on to play professionally overseas. Most recently, Wingate had returned to his home state to become the athletic director and head boys’ basketball coach at nearby Emmanuel Christian Academy. The 2013-14 season will be Wingate’s 12th as a collegiate head women’s basketball coach. The Blue Knight women’s basketball team is coming off a conference championship, the first in the last 15 years for the program. Wingate resides in the area with his wife, Tiah, and children, Jaylee, Tripp, Romagn, and Noelle.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT KRISTINA DANELLA In June of 2013, Urbana University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Danny Wingate announced the hiring of his first Blue Knight assistant coach. Kristina Danella accepted her first collegiate coaching position and will join the Blue Knights as an assistant coach in the fall of 2013. According to Coach Wingate, “Coach Danella was exactly what we were looking for in an assistant to continue the success of UU women’s basketball. Her balance of competitiveness and professionalism was evident in our first meeting. Coach Danella has competed at the highest of levels, and I am confident that her passion for learning the game of women’s basketball will be contagious throughout the program. I am excited to begin working with her.”
ASSISTANT COACH
Danella comes to Urbana from NCAA Division I Marist College where she wrapped up her collegiate playing career this past March. Danella was the 2012-13 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Sixth Player of the Year this past season, averaging 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Red Foxes. Marist finished the season undefeated in the MAAC, capturing the program’s eighth straight conference title. The Red Foxes earned a 12-seed in the NCAA Tournament, bowing out in the first round to 5-seed Michigan State 5547. In Danella’s previous two seasons at Marist, the Red Foxes advanced to Round of 32. The New Jersey native led the MAAC in three-point shooting this past season (.410), and she finished second in the conference and 12th in the country with an .887 free throw percentage. The 1,000-point scorer leaves Marist as the alltime leader in free throw shooting, knocking down better than 90% of her attempts from the charity stripe. During her three years at Marist, Danella played under Head Coach Brian Giorgis. After 12 seasons with the Red Foxes, Giorgis already boasts an impressive coaching tree. About 20 former Red Foxes have joined the coaching ranks. Prior to her time at Marist, Danella started for two seasons at the University of Massachusetts. Danella was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team as a freshman in 2008-09. She averaged nearly 12 points and 6 boards per game as a sophomore for the Minutewomen. During her prep career, Danella poured in a school-record 1,773 points and pulled down a school-record 1,156 career rebounds at Red Bank Catholic High School in Red Bank, New Jersey. Danella finished her career with 26 school records, including a most points in a single game (43). Danella received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Special Education from Marist in May of 2013. She will begin working towards a Master’s Degree at Urbana in the fall of 2013.

A THLETICS
On behalf of the entire Urbana University family, I would like to welcome you to the home of Blue Knight athletics. Urbana University is proud to sponsor 15 athletic programs in one of the most beautiful geographic locations in the nation. Although athletics is an integral part of our campus environment, it is the pride that we take in the development of the total person that we find most rewarding. With so many college choices available to students today, I am often asked, "Why is Urbana University the right place for me?" Most often, my answer is that the core attribute of NCAA Division II athletics, known as "Life in Balance", is carried out and practiced in all that we do. At Urbana University it is universally accepted that all students and employees are equipped with a unique skill set of strengths and weaknesses. We constantly seek to accentuate those strengths and nurture those weaknesses in an effort to form a collective unified body of positive results. Our campus-wide slogan of "One Student at a Time" confirms our commitment to knowing each individual on a personal basis. It's what makes success a reality and not merely just a dream at Urbana University. Spearheaded by our move to the NCAA, we have created a culture of life in balance. This is not merely an athletics-only initiative but one that permeates our entire campus. The core attributes of life in balance are learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, and resourcefulness. Together, these attributes form a collective bond for all that call Urbana University home. As our campus continues to grow, it is done with the constant mindset to provide more opportunities for student development and increased success. All the while it has provided the very foundation for school spirit, pride, and a will to achieve the very best for our student-athletes. To be a Blue Knight student-athlete is to be a part of something truly unique and special. I am confident that you, as a student-athlete, alumni, colleague, or friend of Urbana University, will find your time here to be one of the most rewarding, meaningful portions of your life. If you haven't already, you will soon discover that working together works wonders here at Urbana University. Success for ourselves is found in each other. We invite you to become a valued part of a grand tradition and a unique story of success for yourself and all those that surround you.

Best wishes in all that you do, and GO BLUE KNIGHTS!
